Karate is a form of martial arts in which people who have had years and years of training can, using only their hands and feet, make some of the worst movies in the history of the world.
The customer in the Italian restaurant was so pleased that he asked to speak to the chef. The owner proudly led him into the kitchen and introduced him to the chef. "Your veal parmigiana was superb," the customer said. "I just spent a month in Italy, and yours is better than any I ever had over there." "Naturally," the chef said. "Over there, they use domestic cheese. Ours is imported."
Marriages are made in heaven. But so again are thunder and lightning.
A young man finds the woman of his dreams and asks her to marry him. He tells his mother he wants her to meet his fiance, but he wants to make a bit of a game out of it. He says he'll bring the girl over with two other women and see if his mother can guess which is the one he wants to marry. His mother agrees to the game.

That night, he shows up at his mother's house with three beautiful young ladies. They all sit down on the couch, and everyone has a wonderful evening talking and getting to know each other. At the end of the evening, the young man asks his mother, 'OK, Mom, which one is the woman I want to marry?' Without any hesitation at all, his mother replies, 'The one in the middle.' The young man is astounded. 'How in the world did you figure it out?' 'Easy,' she says. 'I don't like her.'
Every man wants a wife who is beautiful, understanding, economical, and a good cook. But the law allows only one wife. A young lady visited a computer dating service and requested, "I'm look-
ing for a spouse. Can you please help me to find a suitable one?" The matchmaker said, "What exactly are you looking for?" "Well, let me see. Needs to be good looking, polite, humorous, sporty, knowledgeable, good at singing and dancing. Willing to accompany me the whole day at home during my leisure hour if I don't go out. Be able to tell me interesting stories when I need a companion for conversation and be silent when I want to rest." The matchmaker entered the information into the computer and, in a matter of moments, handed the results to the woman. The results read, "Buy a television."
Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something you say. After marriage, he will fall asleep before you finish.

Candle of Hope weekend to kickstart Relay for Life fundraising campaign THE upcoming Candle of Hope weekend is set to kickstart this year’s fundraising efforts for the inaugural Tipperary Relay for Life challenge. On Friday 17th and Saturday 18th of June next in Tesco, Nenagh the Candle of Hope committee will aim to heighten awareness of the Tipperary Relay for Life event and the ongoing efforts in the fight against cancer. On both days members of the public will be given the opportunity to dedicate a Candle of Hope in remembrance or celebration of your loved one(s) with all donations going to the Irish Cancer Society/Relay for Life Tipperary. Each dedication will cost just €5. The Relay for Life challenge is a fundraising event aimed at raising much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society, with the first ever challenge to take on August 27th and 28th in Toomevara GAA grounds. Without doubt one of the highlights and most moving elements of the Relay event, is the Candle of Hope ceremony which takes place at dusk on the first evening of the Relay. As dusk approaches the candles are set around the track and lit by participants. The Candle of Hope ceremony is a symbol of remembrance for all those family members and friends lost to cancer, and a symbol of hope for those living with cancer. Preparations are very much underway for this year’s
Relay for Life challenge but there are still more teams needed to participate. Teams of friends, neighbours families and colleagues can come together in groups of 8-20 people and commit to keeping a participant walking around the Relay course for the 24 hours of the event. All members of a team do not have to be present for 24 hours, only to give up a small portion of their time for a period of the 24 hours. In addition, over the 24 hours hundreds of other activities take place to create a wonderfully festive atmosphere, with local bands and organisations all lending a helping hand. The event kicks off with a 'Survivors’ Lap which is an inspirational start to the event where cancer survivors of all ages are invited to begin the relay by walking the first lap of the course, cheered on by family, friends and teams from the community who have come together to celebrate. If you are a cancer survivor and would like to take part in the 'Survivors' Lap, you are welcome to register your interest with us at the stand in Tesco. Further information will be available at the Candle of Hope stand in Tesco on Fri/Sat 17th/18th June or from any members of the local Relay for Life organising committee. Contact 1850 60 60 60 or online at www.cancer.ie.ortipperaryrelayforli fe @gmail.com for further information.

Rugby for Palestine Former Irish international and Leinster and Munster player Trevor Hogan from Nenagh has decided to help the besieged people of Gaza by volunteering to go on the next Flotilla which is leaving soon. He has an interesting story to tell about how and why a person so privileged has decided to put the fate of a besieged people before his own interests. He has the following to say: Sport can raise the mood of a people, bring communities together, and provide a diversion from harsh realities of life. I have been lucky enough to experience this first hand during my time playing for both Munster and Leinster. I think of the friendships made that last long beyond the training and playing pitch. The strength of character you develop from tough experiences and the strong team spirit that evolves. You learn about discipline and honesty, respect for your opponent - values essential to the game. I believe these are traits of a sport that could translate well in a place in search of hope and positivity. This place is the Gaza strip, currently under a land and sea blockade. It is a tiny coastal enclave roughly the size of Limerick and home to 1.5millon people. The blockade has resulted in a growing humanitarian crisis. I have linked up with a Gazan rugby player, Rabie Al Masri, who is being

Cllr. Michael Gleeson, Killarney County Council who is standing under the banner and immediately behind the high viz gent, to his left is Billy, (beard and cane) and to the Cllrs. right is Katriona.
Doing Great Work For The Blind Billy Shanahan and his daughter Katriona do a huge amount of work on behalf of NCBI. Billy is blind and a great supporter of NCBI, he is also a very good cyclist. Billy and Katriona have been raising money for the NCBI for some years now through their two main fund raisers Blazing Bikers (a motorbike run held around the May Bank Holiday every year) and Trip to Tipp (a cycling event held in and around Tipperary every Summer) Last May Bank Holiday they raised appx. €30,000.00 on their annual Blazing Bikers run which covered all 32 counties in the one weekend. Sixty bikes took part and many had pillion passengers. The event
started in Killarney on the Saturday morning and finished up in Kilkenny on the Monday. When people in the community step forward and do good they should be recognized. Billy is available at 087 9253225

Sponsored Dog Walk The sky may have been dull and grey with not a sight of blue sky anywhere, but the mood of the people and dogs gathered to do the sponsored walk was far from blue. On Sunday 29th May, the supporters, both human and canine, of the Tipperary Friends of Animals gathered in Banba Square, Nenagh, to take part in the annual Sponsored Dog Walk of about three miles, braving the constant threat of rain to raise much needed funds to care for stray and injured animals. It was a very encouraging sight to see the amount of supporters who came to take part in the walk, pulling their owners in tow. Fr. Jim O'Brien opened the event with a blessing of the animals and then everyone headed off on the three mile walk. The stalwart band of walkers eventually arrived back in the Square and were given plenty of refreshments and there were also treats for the dogs. Several photos were taken and anyone wishing to get a copy of their photos are welcome to phone Linda 086-8163707 and all we ask is a small donation. Tipperary Friends of Animals is run solely by volunteers and every cent collected will be used in the care

Anyone who has not handed in their cards, are asked to leave them into the Sportsman's Dream in Kenyon Street, Nenagh, as soon as possible. If there is anyone who like to help with fundraising or fostering, they would be very welcome. We also have a newsletter and anyone wishing to get a copy of the newsletter, can email kathleen.ryan6@gmail.com for a copy. Tipperary Friends of Animals would like to thank every person and every dog that took part in the walk and hope to see you all again next year. We would also like to extend a special thank-you to Philly Ryan from Silver Street for the use of his microphone.
The Tipperary Vintage and Custom Rally Present Cheques To Charity The Tipperary Vintage and Custom Rally recently presented cheques to the value of €24,459 to three deserving charities at Vaughans Bar, Tipperary Town. The money had been raised during this year's Rally and Bike Run held over the Easter weekend both of which were extremely well supported and attended by people from the local community and much further afield. The three beneficiaries were South Tipperary Hospice who received €12,225, Arthritis Ireland (limerick Branch) €6,112 and the Cluain Arann care home who also accepted €6,112 towards their running costs. Brendon O'Keefe, chairman of the South Tipperary Hospice movement declared himself delighted at having his organisation once again helped by the rally whilst Angela Corby of Cluain Aronn also ex-
pressed her gratitude for the donation. Anne Plunkett of Arthritis Ireland was particularly delighted and pointed out that the money would be used to fund 40 hydrotherapy sessions for sufferers who find their movements badly compromised by the disease. Jack Leonard, chairamn of Tipp Rally committee took the opportunity to thank all those who had helped put on such a tremendous show this year with nearly €5,000 more being raised than in 2010. "It's going to be a hard act to follow next year, but the racecourse is booked and planning has started so we have evey intention of making it better still" Tipperary Vintage and Custom Show will be next held at Tipperary Racecourse on Easter Sunday, 8th April 2012 see www.tipprally.com for full details.
The show will take place in the Clarke Hall, which is a splendid facility and one which many towns would be delighted to have. With tiered seating everyone in the audience is assured of a good view, and the stage and lighting crew are busily preparing the stage so that everything will be as professional as possible for the children. Phil Quigley is no stranger to the stage, having performed all her life and produced many shows both in Borrisokane and The Tavern, Ballinderry, and over the past 10 years or so, raising up to €80,000 for Milford Hospice.
Admission to the show is €10 for adults and €5 for children, which is very reasonable in these days of soaring ticket prices for shows and concerts, and even booking fees! The show commences each night at 8.30 and Phil urges everyone to support these children. While doing so you will have a fabulous night’s entertainment, and giving these young people encouragement for the future. It can cost a lot to stage shows these days, but whatever profits may accrue from this production will be donated to Milford Hospice, so do come along on Friday 10th, Saturday 11th, and Sunday 12th June ; doors open 8pm.
Borrisokane kids take to the stage Up to 40 children from Borrisokane and surrounding areas are putting the final touches to their upcoming stage production “That’s Showbiz”, which will be staged in the Clarke Hall on Friday 10th, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of June. Under the direction of Phil Quigley, the presentation consists of a fast-moving and action packed variety show. There will be something for everybody, with scenes from musicals such as Oliver, Cats, Kiss Me Kate and more. Dance routines, colourful costumes, hilarious comedy sketches, instrumentals and novelty items will also be the order of the day.
The children range in age from 5 to 12 and come from Borrisokane, Terryglass, Ballinderry, Kyle, Ardcroney, Puckane, Kilbarron and other surrounding areas. They have been working hard since before Christmas and all are very excited about this, the very first production of the group, which is known as Kidz Onstage. The rehearsals have given all children a chance to develop movement, acting and singing skills, and indeed many have made great progress since the first week. In particular it has been inspiring to see a lot of the children become more selfassured and confident, and this is a great benefit of being involved in arts and theatre.

Counselling Depression By Jim O’Shea The next subtype of major depression is depression with psychotic features. It is a frightening and severe depression, and includes the presence of either hallucinations or delusions. To be classed as depression these must occur in the context of a major depressive episode (major depression with psychotic features). Alarmingly, between 14% and 20% of people with major depression will experience psychotic features. Generally, the hallucinations or delusions have a depressive composition, such as guilt at the (mistaken) belief that one has caused great harm, or a belief that one deserved punishment, or is being punished. Such sufferers sometimes have a great sense of sin and failure; they also tend to have nihilistic beliefs (a belief in nothing), such as the world is about to end. All of these are consistent with the negative, self-critical thoughts associated with depression. Psychotic depression is associated with what is called psychomotor disturbance (being overexcited or, on the other hand, lethargic), increased feelings of worthlessness and guilt, more severe symptoms of depression, and a more severe clinical course. Other signs include anxiety, hypochondria, insomnia, physical immobility, constipation and a reduction in the ability to think. This depression is also accompanied by paranoia, which is common to schizophrenia, but, unlike the schizophrenic, the psychotically depressed person is aware of them and realises that they are not true. With psychotic depression there is a risk of recurrence, of getting bipolar depression and of suicide. There are no obvious risk factors, but it is known that those with a family history of depression may be more susceptible to it. Another subtype of major depression, which we are all aware of, is depression associated with pregnancy and birth. These are postnatal (postpartum) and antenatal depression, and can be exceptionally severe. Postnatal depression may refer to 3 distinct types – ‘baby blues’, major depression and post natal psychosis. Up to 75% of women can experience ‘baby blues’ in the first week after giving birth. They show mild symptoms such as crying, insomnia, poor appetite, and mood change. It is difficult perhaps to understand the paradox in which the joy of bringing new life into the world is sometimes accompanied by feelings of depression. Baby blues, however, are normal, but if a major depressive episode develops in the few weeks after delivery it is called major depression with post natal onset. Up to 15% of mothers may experience post natal major depression, and experience intense and persistent anxiety, irri-
tability, insomnia, feelings of guilt, difficulty concentrating, persistent weepiness or sadness. AWARE, the leading organisation on depression in Ireland, gives a more detailed description of the effects of this type of depression· Feeling tired and finding everything an effort · Worrying excessively over the baby; for example, constantly checking on the baby · Finding it hard to cope with even minor day-to-day mishaps · Finding it hard to concentrate and consequently being more forgetful · Feeling tense and nervous much of the time. Feeling panicky for no good reason · Not wanting to be alone · No interest in sex There does not appear to be any biological or hormonal cause of post natal depression. It seems that antenatal and social factors are the main causes. Giving birth is a stressful event, and can increase three-fold the onset of depression. Women who are prone to what is grandly called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (a severe form of tension before menstruation), low mood in the first week following birth, women who have a stressful pregnancy, poor support, difficult family circumstances, have negative life events and have a history of depression (having vulnerable personalities) have an increased risk of getting post natal depression Continued in next issue.
