After driving up and down several lanes, I finally found a parking spot at the shopping centre. I noticed another man driving very slowly in the same direction, and, since he was closer, I gave him the "Are you going to park there?" look. His responding gestures were very confusing. First he shook his head. Next he pointed at me, then at the parking space and then at himself, his watch and the shopping centre. Finishing off, he frowned, raised his
palms upward and shrugged. Once I parked, I walked over to the driver to make sure he didn't want the space. "You must be single," he replied. "If you were married, you would've known that was the universal sign for 'Go ahead and take the spot. I'm waiting for my wife.'"
The newly wed wife said to her husband when he returned from work: "I have great news for you. Pretty soon we're going to be three in this house instead of two." After the wonderful success of the inaugural Tipperary Mini Marathon in Thurles in September 2010, with over 800 women participating, North Tipperary Sports Partnership and South Tipperary Sports Partnership are delighted to announce that the 2011 event will take place in Clonmel on Sunday 18th September, 2011 at 2pm. International Irish athlete Catherina McKiernan launched the 2011 event recently in Clonmel AC with members of Sports Partnerships, committee members and Clonmel Mayor Siobhan Ambrose in attendance. Catherina commented on the success of the Sports Partnerships Meet and Train groups and how wonderful it was to see so many people of all ages out running and walking and to keep enjoying it.
Elaine Cullinan, Co-ordinator, North Tipperary Sports Partnership commented ‘This event is open to runners, walkers and joggers of all mobility’s and abilities. We really want to encourage as many women as possible to come out and have fun on the day. You can download training programmes for walking and running the event from the website above. All participants will be chip timed so the elite runners will get an accurate time and the event is AAI measured and certified. Come out and support our own mini marathon for Tipperary’. Killea Community Fun Day, Dog Show & Vintage Run On Sunday 26th June, starting at 1.30pm, the Killea Community Fun Day, Dog Show and Vintage Run will be held at Killea Sports Field. There will be lots of activities for young and old, including skittles, penalty taking, hurling skills, fishing for bottles, pillow fighting, sheaf pitching, reversing tractor, mini digger skills. A Crossbar Challenge will be held at 4.30. For the farming community there is also plenty of events, including stock judging, weight of bullock, judging Friesian heifers. The vintage run starts at 11.30am.

TIPP QUALIFY FOR MUNSTER SENIOR HURLING FINAL Congratulations to Tipperary on reaching the Munster Senior Hurling final by defeating Clare by 4-19 to 1-19 in an exciting game at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on Sunday. The final against Waterford on Sunday July 10 is fixed for Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork. Tipperary will be seeking their 39th Munster title while Waterford will be chasing title number 10. Tipperary and Waterford have shared the last 4 Munster titles between them with Waterford winning in 2007 and 2010 and Tipperary in 2008 and 2009. The last time Tipperary won the Munster senior hurling championship as defending All Ireland champions was in 1965. Tipperary and Waterford have met in three Munster finals when Tipperary were defending All Ireland champions – 1962, 1963 and 2002. Waterford won 2 of those finals (1963 and 2002) to Tipp’s one (1962). TIPP V LAOIS IN ALL IRELAND FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Tipperary will play Laois in the All Ireland senior football championship round 1 at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise next Saturday evening, June 25 at 7pm. SARSFIELDS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF HURLING The inaugural Thurles Sarsfields International Hurling Thirteens Festival in Thurles on Munster final week-end, will feature teams from Brussels, London, Northern Ireland, Dundalk, Naas, and the star attraction, The Wild Geese, a team comprised of U.S. servicemen, who are currently based in Lakenheath in England. Organised by the reigning Tipperary senior hurling champions, Sarsfields, the festival has a dual purpose. It aims to exploit the attractiveness of one of the biggest national sporting occasions, the Munster hurling final, to promote tourism to the Thurles area, the birthplace of the GAA, while at the same time affording hurling clubs which would not normally have the opportunity, the chance of being part of the Munster final build-up. The official opening of the festival will be on Friday evening, July 8 and this will also feature a concert by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann. Thurles Sarsfields Ladies Football Club is staging its own tournament as part of the programme and Durlas Og juvenile club is organising an under 16 hurling blitz involving teams from adjoining counties, truly a celebra-
tion of Gaelic games and culture. By opting for a thirteens format, Sarsfields club is seeking to accommodate the visiting clubs which might have difficulty in bringing full squads to Thurles for the week-end. An appropriate set of rules has been drawn up for the games which have been given the green light by Croke Park, and games will be of fifteen minutes per half duration. The winning club will receive the Semple Cup, presented to Sarsfields club by the Semple family in memory of the late Tom Semple, the famed Sarsfields and Tipperary players and administrator who is also commemorated in Semple Stadium. Specially designed medals have also been commissioned. Other events in the programme include a long puck competition and the popular crossbar challenge. Well done to the organising committee, chaired by John Enright, on launching this great event – hopefully it will become an annual festival.

Tipperary’s Businesswomen of the Year Announced North Tipperary’s Businesswomen of the Year were announced at a dinner hosted by Network North Tipperary in Thurles on 14th June. Ann Marie Walsh from the Tipperary Kitchen in Holycross won the Established Business category, which was sponsored by Network North Tipperary. Louisa Condon from the Ant Team won the New & Emerging category, which was sponsored by the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board. The awards were
also supported by associated sponsors Nine Design Jewellery and the Bella Makeover Studio. Both Louisa and Ann Marie will go on to represent Tipperary at the Network Ireland Businesswomen of the Year Awards, which will take place in Dublin Castle on 21st October.

The organisation promotes women in business and is part-funded by the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board. An New Organisation For External Wall Insulation Contractors An organisation has been established to represent the interests of external wall insulation contractors. This organisation is called External Insulated Render Association (E.I.R.A) E.I.R.A plans to establish a code of practice for the industry, to represent their members in negotiations with the relevant statutory bodies and to establish the thinking and timescale of government policy with regard to the retrofitting programme. They will also act as a communication and distribution point for their members, while endeavouring to improve standards and establish a proper
form of inspection for the industry. They are working on a website which should soon be up and running. E.I.R.A. are looking for contractors to become members in order to give them a strong enough voice to represent the Industry. Fiver Friday Lets stop moaning and lets do something that will help to get Ireland moving again. We may not have got ourselves into this mess, but we can play a big part in getting ourselves out of it. So Mark Beggs has launched a campaign to make July the 1st Fiver Friday. “ I am asking everybody in the country to support local business on July 1st by spending an extra €5 in a local business. It could be you will buy an extra coffee or buy your lunch that day. But that extra Fiver will make a difference to your local business” according to Beggs. What started the idea was when Marks 17 year old son, who is setting his leaving cert in 2012, announced that he will be moving to Canada after his leaving cert because he saw no future in this
country. “I could have just done nothing and said sure that’s the way of the future or play a part in changing the future.” Beggs said. So the idea came about for Fiver Friday. It’s a simple idea but part of idea was to get people to realize that we all need to play a part in getting Ireland moving, and that part can be as simple as spending and Extra Fiver. “ People need to realise that if a business grows it sales than it needs to buy more goods and maybe employ more people. Forgot about bail outs and millions need here and there. Keep it simple. Counselling Depression By Jim O’Shea The child psychologist, Patricia Hughes and some of her colleagues in St. George’s University, London, did a mixed race study in England and Wales in the late 1990s, and looked at the likelihood that women who suffered stillbirth were at risk of developing postnatal depression. They found that those who became pregnant within 12 months of the still birth had high levels of depression during the last three months of their pregnancy, followed by postnatal depression. This is important, because a small percentage of pregnancies end in still birth after 24 weeks gestation in England and Wales. They also concluded that women need 12 months to mourn the loss of their child before conceiving again; otherwise they are more vulnerable to depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, women who develop post natal depression seem to be at increased risk for developing depression in the future. Another sad factor of post natal depression is that it may affect the child, which is probably due to the disturbance in the mother-infant relationship. The cognitive and emotional development of the child seem to be adversely affected, and it is not a brief influence. Male children of mothers who suffered from post natal depression have shown a higher level of behavioural disturbance at 5 years old. A small minority of women (1-2 in a 1000 births) suffer from post natal psychosis or post natal depression with delusions. Most of the women who suffer from post natal psychoses have bipolar depression or schizophrenia. Extreme forms of post natal psychosis may include the risk of suicide or infanticide, because such women may suffer from delusions that their child is evil or demonic. You ladies may be surprised to learn that men also suffer from post natal depression! Psychologists feel that the effects of postnatal depression on fathers’ parenting are understudied. James Paulson, a Professor of Paediatrics in America, and his colleagues studied a large amount of data from a U.S. study of 5089 2-parent families, and came to the conclusion that 14% of mothers and 10% of fathers suffered from postnatal depression. This is an interesting study because it examines the impact of maternal postnatal depression, paternal post natal depression and a combination of both. The study found that post natal depression interfered with effective parenting, where mothers were likely to engage in less healthy feeding and sleep practices with their child, and both parents were less inclined to enrich their child with such activities as reading, singing, or storytelling. It is interesting, too, that maternal post natal depression may trigger off paternal post natal depression. Male post natal depression can be seen as a major life change whereby the male partner may find himself looking after his partner and perhaps other children, and
trying to adjust to the females partner’s lower sex drive for a number of months. He may now be taking second place in the female partner’s affections. There is also the question of having less time at work. New fathers are more likely to become depressed if their partners are depressed. New fathers are particularly at risk of post natal depression, and the risk is increased by such issues as unplanned pregnancy, substance abuse, unemployment and depression before the pregnancy. Anxiety may be concurrent with depression in some fathers. Teenage fathers are even more at risk of becoming depressed. Antenatal and post natal depression should not be confused with what is beautifully called couvades syndrome, a condition whereby the father experiences physiological symptoms, similar to the pregnant partner. This is known colloquially as a sympathy pregnancy! It might be helpful to consider some suggestions on how to cope with post-natal depression, which is an exhausting condition. Even doing the smallest jobs can be difficult. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for a depressed mother to cope with housework, and take care of her other children. If she works outside the home the burden is even greater, because people do not understand post-natal depression. They tend to underestimate and minimise its effects. It is really important for the mother to get as much help as possible with the new baby and with housework. She needs her partner and friends, who not only understand how she is, but are willing to help. My impression is that most young partners nowadays want to be involved in bringing up their children.
