“An archaeologist is the best husband a woman can have. The older she gets the more interested he is in her.” Agatha Christie
A local charity realized that the organization had never received a donation from the town's most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute. "Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least €500,000, you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give back to the community in some way?" The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, "First, did
your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?" Embarrassed, the charity rep mumbled, "Um ... no." The lawyer interrupts, "or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?" The stricken charity rep began to stammer out an apology, but was interrupted again.

"or that my sister's husband died in a traffic accident," the lawyer's voice rising in indignation, "leaving her penniless with three children?!" The humiliated charity rep, completely beaten, said simply, "I had no idea..." On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again, "So if I don't give any money to them, why should I give any to you?"

Jerry was removing some engine valves from a car on the lift when he spotted the famous heart surgeon Dr. Samuel Kaiser, who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager. Jerry, who was somewhat of a loud mouth, shouted across the garage, "Hey Kaiser. Is dat you? Come over here a minute."
The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where Jerry was working on the car. Jerry, in a loud voice that all could hear, said argumentatively, "So Mr. fancy doctor, look at this work. I too, take valves out, grind 'em, put in new parts, and when I'm finished, this baby will purr like a kitten. So how come you get the big bucks, when you and me are doing basically the same work?" Dr. Kaiser, very embarrassed, shook his head and replied in a soft voice, "Try doing your work with the engine running."

The teacher was giving her class of seven-year-olds a natural history lesson. "Worker ants," she told them, "can carry pieces of food five times their own weight. What do you conclude from that?" One child was ready with an answer: "They don't have a union."

The Des O'Malley Remembrance Walk The family of the late Des O’Malley, along with his friends and his colleagues at Roscommon Integrated Development Company, have organised a charity walk in his name to raise funds for Hospice Care in the Hospital of the Assumption, Thurles. The Des O’Malley Remembrance Walk will take place in Roscommon (as this was where Des used to work) on the 9th July 2011at 12 noon, with all proceeds raised going to Unit B (Hospice ward), in the Hospital of the Assumption, Thurles. The meeting place is the Bridge House Pub and B&B, Athleague, Co. Roscommon. Walkers will be transported from meeting point at 12 noon and drop them to start of desired walk. The walks are a lowland trail going through fields, bog, on river banks and roads and should take between 1-2 hours approximately. Walkers are asked to bring good footwear, light rain gear, mobile phone and snack/drink. Refreshments will be
available after walk in Bridge House Pub e.g. drinks, meals etc., and depending on the turn out evening entertainment will be provided in the Bridge House Pub. It is hoped that the Des O’Malley Walk will become an annual event around his anniversary, next year's walk will be held in Tipperary and then back again to Roscommon in 2013. Persons interested in participating on the walk to raise much needed monies for Hospice Care, are asked to confirm their attendance by contacting any of the following organisers: Phyllis Sheridan Mob: 087-2193443, email: sheridanphyllis@yahoo.ie; Ursula O’Malley Mob: 0879164656, email: omalleyu@gmail.com; or Martin Dunne in Roscommon Mob: 087-2665951 or martin@ridc.ie.
Turning Back the Clock In the shadow of the fairy hill of Knockshegowna lies Ballingarry Village, which despite its postal address is situated on the N52, midway between Birr in Offaly and Borrisokane, Co.Tipperary. Located here is Real Wood Furniture, who produce, as the name implies, solid real wood products, based on traditional Irish styles going back perhaps 200 years. To see a business operating successfully in any rural village, is a welcome change from the normal pattern of events of recent years and such an enterprise will hopefully be encouraged and supported. For anyone with an interest in that homely and nowadays much sought after traditional free standing furniture, a visit to the Real Wood Furniture showroom is essential. Everything, down to the smallest detail of cornices, fretwork etc. is hand-
made by experienced craftsmen, who will produce a piece to suit that awkward space or corner regardless of shape or size, as well as the standard sizes. The Irish kitchen dresser has long been the centre piece of homes and is the most versatile of all kitchen furniture. Real Wood Furniture are committed to producing those authentic dressers as well as settle beds, long johns, washstands, wardrobes, bookshelves, bedside lockers, blanket boxes or any other piece the customer requires. Some of the titles used may be unknown to the present generation, but there is no doubt this style is making a comeback. Fitted furniture is also not a problem; Real Wood Furniture will fulfil all such orders for built in wardrobes or kitchens, including measurement, design, manufacture and fitting. Tipp Minor Footballers win Munster Final Congratulations to the Tipperary minor footballers and management on their comprehensive Munster minor football final victory over Cork at Killarney on Sunday last on a scoreline of 3-11 to 0-9. Liam McGrath of Loughmore Castleiney became the first Tipperary player to receive the Tadhg Crowley Cup since Mark O’Shea in 1995 and only the 6th ever Tipperary man to captain his team to Munster minor football championship honours. In addition to Mark O’Shea the others were Andy Greensmith (1934), Willie Power (1935), Liam Boland (1955) and Frank Howlin (1984). Manager, David Power (Kilsheelan-Kilcash) and selectors Tadhg Duggan (Arravale Rovers), Pat Murphy (Kilruane MacDonaghs), Fergal McDonnell (JK Brackens) and coach, Alan O’Connor (Cahir) deserve great credit for preparing the team so well. The support from senior team manager, John Evans, and the Football Board has also been very beneficial. Having beaten both Kerry and Cork on the way to the title, there is no doubting the quality and capability of this team. Tipp will play the Leinster runners-up in the All-Ireland quarter final on the weekend of July 30/31 and August 1 as they attempt to win the county’s first minor All Ireland since 1934.
Munster Senior Hurling Final Good luck to the Tipperary senior hurlers for the Munster final against Waterford in Pairc Uí Chaoimh next Sunday, July 10. This eagerly awaited clash of the 2010 All Ireland and Munster Champions is likely to be one of the highlights of the hurling year. Tipp and Waterford last met in a Munster final in 2009 when Tipp won and in a
Munster final when Tipp were defending All Ireland champions in 2002 when Waterford won. Tipp and Waterford have met 39 times in the championship with 28 wins for Tipp, 10 for Waterford and 1 draw which was in 1933. Waterford won the replay at Carrick on Suir. Tipp also received 3 walk overs – 1889, 1895 and 1922. In their last 10 meetings between 1996 and 2010 each county has had 5 victories. Supporters are advised to purchase tickets in advance of the game. Only a limited number of stand tickets remain for sale but there are still terrace tickets available. The Munster GAA Ticket Van will be at the following Tipperary Centra stores during the week: Tuesday July 5: Morning 10.30am – 1.30pm Nenagh (Clare Street), Afternoon 2.30pm -5.30pm and Evening - Cappawhite (The Square); Thursday July 7: Morning 10.30am – 1.30pm - Cashel (Elys), Afternoon 2.30pm -5.30pm Carrick-on-Suir (Ballylynch Service Station), Evening - Carrick-on-Suir (Ballylynch Service Station); Saturday July 9: Morning 10.30am – 1.30pm Nenagh (Clare Street), Afternoon 2.30pm -5.30pm - Templemore (Church Street). Students are reminded that they will need valid id to avail of student discounts. In relation to Second Level students Munster Council is aware that schools don’t produce id cards but students can get Student travel Cards from USIT offices or from www.studenttravelcard.ie. Alternately, secondary school students can get an ISSU scholar card from www.studentcard.ie or an International student ID card from www.isic.org. Unfortunately the scheme has been much abused in the past and Munster Council was forced to seek ID cards from all supporters attempting to avail of the discount. This is in keeping with other bodies such as Irish Rail and Bus Eireann. Munster Under 21 Hurling Semi-final Tipperary will play Cork in the Munster under 21 hurling semi-final at Semple Stadium on Friday July 15 at 7.30pm. Extra time will be played in the event of a draw and the game will be refereed by Michael Wadding of Waterford. It will be the 31st Munster under 21 hurling championship encounter between Tipperary and Cork with Tipp narrowly ahead in the honours with 14 wins to 13 and three draws. It took extra time to give Tipp that 14th win last year in a game that proved to be the launching pad for the All Ireland under 21 success that came later in the year.

Sarsfields International Hurling Festival Good luck to Thurles Sarsfields for their inaugural International Hurling Thirteens Festival in Thurles this coming week-end July 8 and 9. The festival will feature teams from Brussels, London, Northern Ireland, Dundalk, Naas, and the star attraction, The Wild Geese, a team comprised of U.S. servicemen, who are currently based in Lakenheath in England. The festival has a dual purpose - it aims to exploit the attractiveness of one of the biggest national sporting occasions, the Munster hurling final, to promote tourism to the Thurles area, the birthplace of the GAA, while at the same time affording hurling clubs which would not normally have the opportunity, the chance of being part of the Munster final build-up. The official opening of the festival will be on Friday evening, July 8 at the Sarsfields clubhouse and this will also feature a concert by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri
Eireann. The games will be played at Dr. Morris Park and the Sarsfields pitch. Thurles Sarsfields Ladies Football Club is staging its own tournament as part of the programme and Durlas Og juvenile club is organising an under 16 hurling blitz involving teams from adjoining counties, truly a celebration of Gaelic games and culture.

The Irish Youth Harp Orchestra Launched in 2006, the Irish Youth Harp Orchestra is one of Ireland’s most innovative and vibrant concert troupes. Comprising up to 20 harpers aged 10 upwards, all advanced players, many with championship titles, and many are multi-instrumentalists, singers or dancers, this is a concert celebrating all that’s great in Irish music. Well used to international touring, this is an opportunity for our home audience to hear a great concert featuring local young musicians. Directed by Janet Harbison and featuring much new Irish music as well as original arrangements, the optimism, joy and musicianship of the Irish Youth Harp Orchestra is certain to impress. Dr Janet Harbison was born in Dublin. During her years as Curator of Music at the Ulster Folk Museum (1986-94), she directed the Belfast Harper’s Bicentenary festival and exhibition, the World Harp Festival Belfast, launched the Belfast Harp Orchestra, toured worldwide with the Chieftains and with them won the Grammy Award for Best Folk Music Album 1993. Are you looking at breathing new life into your kitchen? You’re not alone as the perfect kitchen tops most homeowners’ wish lists. If you’ve started looking but are now overwhelmed with the amount of information out there on kitchen design, layout, work zones, types of worktops, tiles, taps, you’re not alone. A good starting point is to decide is whether you prefer a more classic or more modern look. Making that decision will help you start to narrow down choices on everything from wall color to cabinet doors. Here’s Andy’s from Savvy Kitchen’s jargon buster to show you the difference in the styles available; Country Styled Kitchens - timber is a major feature either in the cabinetry and or the flooring and the furniture. The finish to the wood is simple and often a white wash or distressed look is used over the wood to create an aged feel.
bly a country style kitchen. Contemporary Styled Kitchens – if it’s sleek and streamlined looking, it’s contemporary. These kitchens make great use of space, they look very simple and are open looking. The cabinetry is simple with little or no decoration; it is often made of prefinished board like laminate, a pale timber veneer, or a lacquered paint MDF board. Glass in overhead cabinets is common and lighting plays a key role. According to Andy from Savvy Kitchens, “when looking at different styles, make sure you match your kitchen style to the rest of your house and furnishings – there’s no point in having a sleek modern kitchen and the rest of your house is like a country cottage.”

Little Fighters
Glass Slipper Wanted…
By Cathy Hogan Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf were born in December 2009. They were conjoined at birth. These two beautiful little boys captured the hearts of the nation when their proud parents Angie and Azzedine introduced them to the world. It was a case of love at first sight for most people. When the day of their separation arrived it seemed like the whole world was on its knees praying that both these little boys would come through the marathon operation and they did...They really lived up to their name Little Fighters given to them by their Mum before they were born, because Hassan and Hussein defied the odds and baffled doctors by how well they did following their surgery. They were back home in Cork way ahead of schedule and the whole country rejoiced with the Benhaffaf family when they arrived back in Ireland. They quickly became the most famous set of twins in Ireland (sorry Jedward). But we the public could never have known the heartache this family endured. We were all just watching from the outside. In April this year LITTLE FIGHTERS by Angie Benhaffaf hit the bookshelves.Between the covers of this book Angie shares every step of her journey from the very first scan when she found out her babies were conjoined right through to their separation and beyond. You will be taken on an emotional roller coaster with every page you turn. The book is both heartbreaking and heart warming and will leave you totally in awe of every member of the Benhaffaf family. An-
gie, Azzedine and their two beautiful little daughters Malika and Iman show courage and strength which I never believed were humanly possible as they made this incredible journey with Hassan and Hussein. Angie Benhaffaf lays her soul bare in this beautiful book. It is written from a mothers heart, and mothers everywhere will feel Angie's pain as she hands over her precious babies to the surgical team on the day of their separation, not knowing what the outcome would be. Mothers will also relate to Angies joy at being able to hold her little boys for the first time after their surgery. These two little boys will need "super hero" legs (prosthetic limbs) for the rest of their lives. Every week they have several hospital appointments and physiotherapy sessions but they just smile through it all and light up the lives of so many. Angie and Azzedine have many hopes for their little boys but their dearest wish is to see them stand tall and walk hand in hand one day.By buying LITTLE FIGHTERS you will be helping make that wish a reality. It is on sale now in all good bookshops for 14.99. If you would like to follow the progress of Hassan and Hussein, check out their Facebook page called THE LITTLE FIGHTERS FUND. It is a beautiful page with lots of updates and photos.

Brendan Lynch, originally from Toomevara, is the son of late Garda Sergeant Patrick Lynch and former schoolteacher, Siobhan Lynch. He studied at Nenagh CBS, where his teachers Rodney Bent and Bill Small inculcated a love of literature. Encouraged by Nenagh columnist Willie Heaney, he wrote his first stories for Ireland’s Own, before emigrating to London. An award-winning author, Brendan has written six books. Len Deighton said of his last work on pioneer aviators Alcock and Brown; “Yesterday We Were in America” is a very fine book. I wish I had written it.” Brendan’s next book, PRODIGALS AND GENIUSES, a history of literary Dublin, will be published in September, 2011. The exhibition features letters and books inscribed to Brendan Lynch by writers such as Brendan Behan, Maeve Binchy, Seamus Heaney, Nenagh’s Willie Heaney and Ulick O’Connor to name but a few, and books signed by travel writers including Toomevara-born US poet, Katherine Guilfoyle Edelman. Also photographs signed by Nobel Prize-winning philosopher and pacifist, Bertrand Russell, actors Sir Mi-
chael Caine and Michael Palin, and the late adventurer, Steve Fossett. And inscribed books and photographs of sportsmen Brendan has known or interviewed include Sir Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, racing driver and Great Train Robber, Roy James, snooker champion, Steve Davis and legendary “Toomevara Greyhound” hurler, Wedger Meagher. There are also items signed by Toomevara-born David McClelland, a multiple British Championship race winner in the 1970s; and youngestever Grand Prix driver, Mike Thackwell, who resided in Dromineer in 1980s. The exhibition also features the signatures of pioneer aviators, Arthur Whitten Brown, first to fly the Atlantic non-stop; George Herbert Scott, who made first return Atlantic flight in 1919; New Zealand-born recordbreaker Jean Batten; and Dublinborn jockey and Battle of Britain flier, Paddy Barthropp.

Could Facebook be Ireland’s saving grace? That’s just one of the questions posed by stand up comedian Colm O’Regan in his new side splitting show, Dislike! A Facebook Guide to the Recession. He will be in Thurles for one night only on Saturday 9th July at The Source Arts Centre when the current economic state of the nation will be put under his comedy spotlight. Be prepared to laugh yourself silly as he “Pokes” the recession right where it hurts. Along the way he will try to explain where it all went wrong. Ann and Barry can show us the pros and cons of the bank guarantee, we can find out just why Rapunzel’s house has no stairs and get instructions on what to do if sued
for defamation by a billionaire developer. This show is the hot ticket at the moment and comes straight from a sellout at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival. So don’t miss your chance to “Like” Dislike! Dislike! A Facebook Guide to the Recession is at The Source Arts Centre on Saturday 9th July at 8.00pm. St. Cillian’s Camogie Club’s All-Ireland victory at Feile na nGael in Galway St. Cillian’s Camogie club became the first Offaly team to win a division 2 Feile na nGael All-Ireland Camogie championship in Pearse Stadium , Galway on Sunday June 26th. This was a phenomenal performance from this young , skilful and hard working team , a team which possesses a fantastic will to win and a never say die attitude . All but two of this young team are eligible to play under 14 next year . St. Cillian’s were representing Offaly in this competition for the second year in a row . Mountbellew-Moylough were St. Cillian’s host club on this occasion . The conditions in east Galway were atrocious for their matches on Friday and Saturday . Cillian’s first match on Friday was against their hosts club . Played in a downpour and against a strong wind , Cillian’s found it difficult to adjust to the conditions and only held a slender lead at the end of the first half . Within five minutes of the second half all that had changed , thanks to a purple patch which saw Sarah Harding knock in a couple of goals . The match ended 7-6 to 0-0 in favour of Cillian’s .
With no let up in the dreadful weather , Cillian’s travelled to Cappataggle to play two matches . Water lodged on the surface area throughout the entire pitch which made camogie difficult . Cillian’s played confidently from the beginning and it was no surprise that they came away with a comfortable win : 5-2 to 0-0 . In their final match Cillian’s were up against a much bigger and a more physical Down team . The referee , who was down to officiate at all four group matches refused to referee this match due to the” unseemly behaviour” of some Down supporters and players . Cillian’s agreed to play the match under a substitute referee . The doggedness , attitude and work rate of the 15 St. Cillian’s players saw them come away with a well deserved narrow victory : 1-2 to 0-1 . Sarah Harding scoring the goal and Cailin Fitzgerald (Capt) , the 2 points. It was on to Kilkiniron for the division 2 semi-final with Croughwell at 5.30 on Saturday evening , 3rd match of the day for both teams . With the pitch in excellent shape , it was hoped that the match could be played in clear conditions and thankfully for an hour or so that was the case . This was an enthralling match
played by two excellent teams . Craughwell got the start every team wishes for and had Cillian’s under extreme pressure for the first 10 mins in which they scored 2-1 without reply . The fighting spirit of St. Cillian’s came to the fore for the remainder of the half in which they managed to claw their way back to equal the score by half-time. At the end of the second 20 mins . the teams were still level :2-4 to 3-1 . Extra time , of 5 mins each half was played but with only one point scored by each team the tie was still deadlocked . This lead to sudden death – the first team to score would be victorious . Chloe Costello made sure that would be St. Cillian’s with the winning score – a goal . Only 5 years in existence , St. Cillian’s had reached their first Feile final . Pearse Stadium , was the venue for the 12 noon division 2 final against Sixmilebridge . Played in ideal conditions and on an excellent surface , this match was a classic encounter . St. Cillian’s were not overawed by their much bigger opponents and were soon into their stride competing with great enthusiasm and no little skill with Sixmilebridge . “Man” of the match Sarah Harding scored a wonder gaol from what
seemed an impossible angle , something she did many times throughout the weekend , a score which brought Cillian’s a 4 point lead into the break . This lead was wiped out after 10 mins of the second half and things looked ominous for Cillian’s when Sixmilebridge pointed to go into the lead. Then the “Sarah Harding” factor came into play – another wonder goal from an even more acute angle but at the opposite side of the field . A point by another class player , Aisling Brennan , sealed the win with a point in the dying minutes. Victory for St. Cillian’s 4-3 to 3-3 – a win which was proceeded by unbridled joy , hugging , back slapping and celebrating by the huge support from the Carrig,Riverstown , Killeen and Ballingarry . Captain of St. Cillian’s , Cailin Fitzgerald , accepted the plaque , on behalf of the 24 St. Cillian’s players . E.Cashen , L.Hoctor , S. Killeen , E. Harding , S.Ryan, A.Brennan , M.King , N. Killeen , A.Freeman , R. Dolan , C.Fitzgerald , O. Plunkett , S. Harding , C.Costello , D.Hanamy , M. Maher , N.Dolan , Isobel Cavanagh , K.Corrigan , E. Cleary , B.Ryan , Aisling Larkin , E.Kelly.

Rugby World Cup 2011 The IRFU have scheduled a number of pre-world cup fixtures before they jet off to New Zealand. Much has been made of Eddie O’ Sullivan’s preparation in 2007 so it seems Declan Kidney and his team, are leaving nothing to chance this time around and have lined up 4 competitive internationals.

“Every fortnight I will be giving you my thoughts and opinions on the main sporting topics. I am a sports lover and I am currently studying for a Diploma in Sports Journalism.” Kenny Harrington believes the changes he has put in place were fully justified and i agree. Come July 14th - 17th at Royal St.George he will go in search of his 3rd Claret Jug. Only a fool would rule him out at this stage. While alot of hype surrounds Rory McIlroy after an amazing US Open, we must remember that he has only won 1 European tour event and 1 US PGA tour event. Harrington on other hand has won 11 times on European tour and 3 times on US PGA. He also finished 2nd on 15 occasions in Europe. I accept that McIlroy is only starting off on his career and Harrington hasn't won an event in Europe or USA since 2008. But this man kinows how to win, he has been there and done it all. Mentally i feel he is getting back to where he was in 2007-08, barring an injury i fancy him to be well in contention come July 17th! My Betting Tips (€5 each way on all) Harrington 33/1 Robert Rock 125/1 Ross Fisher 50/1 Sergio Garcia 20/1 Chris Wood 66/1
Munster Hurling Final 2011
Padraig Harrington - coming back into form! The national media will tell you Padraig Harrington's best days are behind him. But his showing in last month’s US Open would suggest otherwise. World Golf is now at its most competitive, with Tiger Woods problems showing no sign of coming to an end (yesterday he said he might miss The Open Championship at Royal St. George due to further injury problems). There isn't a dominant figure in world Golf anymore, every competition and certainly every Major there is 20 to 30 guys who really believe if they hit form they can win it. Harrington hasn't had the best couple of years but i believe he has turned a corner. After his major wins in 2007-08 he felt he needed to change part of his game. While he was criticised widely for this, the man knows what it takes to be the best so while we can question his motives we must trust his decisions. US Open Before the event Harrington was ranked 52 in the world. Condisering all the negativity and bad press not really a bad position. Out of the 51 players ranked ahead of him, 20 didnt make the cut, 3 players didnt attend, he finished higher than 4 more an his +5 overall equalled that of Luke Donald (1) and Robert Karlsson (17). The stats show that he finished better than 24 players higher ranked than him in the world at present. On the PGA Tour this year, while he hasnt been setting the world alight, he has still made cut 9 out 12 competitions. Even last week at players event overall he shot a -4 which was only good enough for T63. This doesnt mean he is playing bad, it just shows the high standard of golf in the world at present. Earnings Since his career has started he has won $19,865,523 (including major wins) on the US PGA Tour. He has also earned over €10,000,000 in prize money from European Tour. You dont't earn money like that being an average player.
It remains to be seen whether this Tipperary team can reach the high standards that they set last September. They weren’t convincing against Cork but when the pressure came on they did what they had to do. The semi final win against Clare was the same, when they needed to pick it up they managed to at their ease. What impressed me in the Clare game was when changes needed to be made they were done quickly and no messing from the sideline. This will be crucial later in the year when bigger games can be decided on such decisions. As for Waterford, they just about got over a Limerick team who I fancy to cause a big upset later in the year. They had five debutants against Limerick but they seem to rely on John Mullane way too much. If Tipperary cut the supply to Mullane and continue to score freely in their forward line then I expect Tipp to tear Waterford apart. I’m thinking 8 points or more on Sunday.
David Haye – Just Not Good Enough! I don’t like David Haye and I predicted that Wladimir Klitschko would beat him after 12 rounds last Saturday night in Hamburg. Haye represents everything that I hate in sport, total disrespect, arrogance and a selfishness that finally came to an end on Saturday. He was dominated by the big man Klitschko for 12 rounds are never looked like causing him any problems. In the build up to the fight Klitschko came across very well. Extremely intelligent and a real champion and he never really reacted to the rubbish Haye presented in the press conferences before the fight. David Haye is a serious athlete, but what is the need for all the antics? It might have worked against an apponent like Audley Harrison but it was never going to upset Klitschko. If he had concentrated on his own game plan and kept his mouth shut then we would have a lot more respect for him. How many people would step into the ring with men 2 and half stone heavier than them! But his arrogance and bad attitude outweighed his bravery. Haye will use his broken toe as the reason for his defeat, and maybe he has a point, but does anyone really feel sorry for the Englishman? I certainly don’t!

Counselling Depression
(Continued from last issue)
Unless a baby suffers from colic, which is a condition that exhausts parents and baby, the mother should try and get some sleep while the baby sleeps. This can only be done if other household members share the housework. At any rate she has to come to the realisation that she cannot do everything, and, she must let go of the expectation that everything must be done. Her health is the most important, and care must begin with the self. Mothers are inclined to neglect themselves, and more so when gripped by post-natal depression. But, the fact is that a mother who neglects herself cannot really take care of others, including her new baby. Because depression makes us withdraw into ourselves there is always the danger of a depressed mother withdrawing from her relationship with her partner. This is made worse by the amount of time that a new baby demands. It is important for the mother to try and make some time for herself and her partner. Obviously this will require a lot of co-operation from her partner. My experience of talking with mothers who suffered, or are suffering, post-natal depression is that they worry a lot. This is particularly true of new mothers. They worry excessively about the simplest things as they contemplate their new fragile infant, and they need much support to build their confidence. This lack of confidence is made much worse by depression. It is very important to have someone with whom to discuss worries or anxieties about how to manage a new baby. While I have said that depressed people tend to withdraw, I would advise a mother suffering from post-natal depression to avoid those who upset her. God knows, it’s hard enough to struggle through depression without being further burdened by others. Indeed, I would go further and say that it is good to avoid as many extra pressures as possible. Looking after a new baby in the first few months is exhausting. Staggering out of bed in the early hours of the morning to a howling baby is no joke. Feeding this new and demanding human at 3 o’clock in the morning can be energy sapping. The baby begins to suck with much enthusiasm, and then falls asleep and the mother has to wait or gently nudge it to wake up again and continue feeding. So, when the baby starts to sleep through the night is a good time to begin thinking about diet and exercise programs. Exercise, fresh air, and diet will improve the depression, and help self-esteem. Exercise is one of the key elements in handling any type of depression. If post natal depression is interfering with a mother’s ability to take care of her baby, that doesn’t make her a bad mother. It means she has a complaint that needs treatment. Therapy is probably the best treatment, if all else fails. Certainly, I would not suggest that a mother go down the antidepressant road. Let us now explore antenatal depression. According to AWARE it afflicts up to 15% of women. This depression strikes in

the first three months of pregnancy, and rates of depression are higher during pregnancy than at any other point during a woman’s life. Two thirds of women with a history of recurrent depression will relapse during pregnancy. Antenatal depression can be most severe if the women sufferers are having marital difficulties, or having doubts about having the baby. Women, who have had abortions in the past, sometimes suffer antenatal depression, when they become pregnant again. Some writers claim that there is no connection between antenatal and post natal depression, although, as I have said already, half of those who get antenatal depression suffer depression during the pregnancy. It seems that antenatal depression is also associated with poor medical care during pregnancy or childbirth, especially if the baby is premature. Foetuses may also be harmed because of the behaviours sometimes associated with depression such as smoking and alcohol. If the mother suffers from long-term depression the effect can be serious for the child. Long-term depression can lead to slow foetal growth and premature labour. They also state that such mothers may not be able to bond with their infants, and such babies are less socially responsive than babies of non-depressed mothers. I feel that this can lead to feelings of abandonment and the lack of a secure attachment (how effectively we bond with others, especially our mothers). This is reflected in adulthood as a lack of selfesteem and a relationship tendency to become attached rather than fall in love. This can lead to all kinds of problems including the inability to access feelings (apart from guilt, shame and rage), a tendency to be jealous, and the probability of being ‘burned’ by any emotional connection.
