Jokes The man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said, "Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me." "Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy." "OK," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife."
An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again." The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversa-

tions. I've changed my will three times!" There was once a man from the city who was visiting a small farm, and during this visit he saw a farmer feeding pigs in a most extraordinary manner. The farmer would lift a pig up to a nearby apple tree, and the pig would eat the apples off the tree directly. The farmer would move the pig from one apple to another until the pig was satisfied, then he would start again with another pig. The city man watched this activity for some time with great astonishment. Finally, he could not resist saying to the farmer, "This is the most inefficient method of feeding pigs that I can imagine. Just think of the time that would be saved if you simply shook the apples off the tree and let the pigs eat them from the ground!" The farmer looked puzzled and replied, "What's time to a pig?"
A lady is having a bad day at the roulette tables in Las Vegas. She's down to her last €50. Exasperated, she exclaims, "What rotten luck! What in the world should I do now?" A man standing next to her, trying to calm her down, suggests, "I don't know. Why don't you play your age?" Then he walked away. Moments later, his attention is grabbed by a great commotion at the roulette table. Maybe, she won! He
rushes back to the table and pushes his way through the crowd. The lady is lying limp on the floor, with the table operator kneeling over her. The man is stunned. He asks, "What happened? Is she alright?" The roulette wheel operator replied, "I don't know. She put all her money on 29. When 36 came up, she just fainted!"
There was a man driving down the road behind an 18 wheeler, at every stoplight the trucker would get out of the cab, run back and bang on the trailer door. After seeing this at several intersections in a row the motorist followed him until he pulled into a parking lot. When they both had come to a stop the truck driver once again jumped out and started banging on the trailer door. The motorist went up to him and said, "I don't mean to be nosey but why do you keep banging on that door?" To which the trucker replied, "Sorry, can't talk now, I have 20 tons of canaries and a 10 ton limit, I have to keep half of them in the air all the time!" When I was a child, I remember my Mom telling me, "Son, when you grow up, you can marry any girl you please." When I became a young man, I learned the sad fact was that I could not please any of them.

Tipp minors reach All-Ireland Camogie Final after war of attrition All Photographs by Mike Ryan
By David Kelly Tipperary saw off neighbors Clare in a real war of attrition to set up an All-Ireland Final date with Galway or Kilkenny. The game remained in the melting pot until the bitter end. With two points separating the sides, Clare’s Chloe Morey stood over a 30m free. The crowd hushed, and an eerie silence more suitable to Thomond Park than Kilmallock ensued. Tipp’s Louise McLoughlin stood her ground and guarded the net with a look of sheer determination etched upon her face. Morey’s goal bound shot was saved and cleared up fieldTipp’s dream had now become a reality. The Premier County started superbly, racking up 2-2 inside the opening minutes. The in-form Ciara McGrath sent the ball crashing to the net after the Clare defence coughed up possession rather cheaply. Clare responded well with U16 starlet Niki Kaiser pointing from close range. Michaela Graham rattled the Clare net again after finishing a fine Nicole Walsh move. Andrea Loughnane picked off two excellent points, following great link up play by Caoimhe Maher in midfield. However, Clare remained in the hunt with Chloe Morey pointing four close range frees and a massive 65 yarder against the wind. The Clare halfback line reduced Tipp’s supply by countering Orla McEniry’s puck out. This largely worked a treat, and when coupled with a high-free count, saw Clare cut the lead again. Three unanswered points from Walsh, Maher and Brid Quinn gave Tipp a slender four-point advantage at the break.
Eerena Fryday and Sinead Touhy traded scores minutes inside the restart. A Caoimhe Maher free caused mayhem in the Clare defence with Graham grabbing a brace. However, Clare refused to wilt, and when Susan Fahy’s hand-passed effort somehow evaded the net, it was Tipperary who were weathering the storm. Niamh O’Dea had another effort cleared, but the break fell to Kaiser, and her groundstroke flashed beyond the reach of McEniry. Points from Morey and the impressive Rachel O’Halloran had Clare within touching distance. Walsh and Tara Kennedy combined to keep Tipp at the helm. Despite the valiant efforts of Morey, Touhy and Kaiser, Clare couldn’t find a way past a well drilled and marshaled Tipp defence.

Tipperary had a number of key performers on the day. Julie Ann Bourke, Sheila Ryan and Louise McLoughlin all impressed, as did Sarah Fryday and Ciara McGrath. However, Caoimhe Maher was the stand out player. Her ability to read the game, as well as her unnerving presence and maturity helped steady the Tipp ship when needed most. Tipperary await the winners of Galway/Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Final (Sun 31sst July). Galway play Kilkenny tonight at 7:30pm in McDonagh Park, Nenagh. Tipperary: O. McEniry, J-A, Bourke, S. Counselling Depression
(Continued from last issue)
There is a strong relationship between depression and attachment, and the sad expressions on the faces of babies of depressed mothers are an indication of this. That is all that I wish to say about major depression and its subtypes. Let us now look at dysthymia, which is a type of low-grade depression that is more intense than normal ‘blues’, but is less than major depression. I suppose this is academic to the person who is suffering from depression, but perhaps to hear that one is not suffering from major depression is some consolation. At any rate, to be classed as dysthymia the depression must last for at least 2 years and be constant or constantly recurring, with very few normal mood periods, and there must be no episodes of hypomania. While there are not as many symptoms as major depression it is a chronic condition causing significant distress or disruption in a person’s life. Psychologists state that at least 3 of the following must be present during the depression periods 1. Reduced energy or activity 2. Insomnia 3. Loss of self-confidence or feelings of inadequacy 4. Difficulty in concentrating. 5. Frequent tearfulness 6. Loss of interest in or enjoyment of sex and other pleasurable activities 7. Feeling of hopelessness or despair 8. A perceived inability to cope with the routine responsibilities of everyday life 9. Pessimism about the future or brooding over the past 10. Social withdrawal 11. Reduced talkativeness. There are two types of this depression anxious dysthymia and anergic dysthymia. Anergy is where the immune system is ineffective against a disease. People with anergic depression have low energy, sleep excessively and get no pleasure from normally pleasurable experiences. There is also a connection between thyroid problems and anergic dysthymia. Those with anxious dysthymia tend to have low self-esteem, restlessness and be oversensitive to rejection by another. They are also suicide orientated, and may be addicted to alcohol, marijuana, opiates and perhaps food. Dysthymia tends to damage the sufferer in a significant way, and, unfortunately, is common, affecting about a quarter of depression sufferers. While traditionally seen as less severe than major depression, it is being increasingly recognised that it leads to strong thoughts of suicide, and increased risk of physical disease. One of the sad facts about this type of depression is that, like major depression, it has a high risk of relapse and of becoming chronic (ongoing). Unfortunately, some people with dysthymia

eventually experience at least one superimposed episode of major depression. This is known as double depression, a definition that portrays its devastating effect. The third type of depression is called depression not otherwise specified. This category contains a number of depression classifications that do not fit into the criteria for major depression or dysthymia. The first type of this depression is called endogenous depression and personality based or neurotic depression. Endogenous means that the depression is formed from within us and has no external cause. The opposite to this is reactive depression, and is a reaction or response to some loss or other harmful or negative experience. Any type of depression can be reactive, and is more easily dealt with in counselling, because its root or cause is apparent. Reactive depression, however awful, is a normal reaction. It may be a reaction, for example, to bereavement. Dr Michael Corry, a Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, reflects my own view that depression is natural, that it is an emotion reacting to life’s difficulties. He puts it eloquently when he writes that ‘to isolate a depressed, suffering human being from their thoughts, from their behaviours, and from the workings of their world is a tragedy beyond words, as it reduces them and the rest of us, to a chemical soup encapsulated in skin. In this soup there is no place for uniqueness, imagination, will, acceptance, compassion, love, peace, creativity, personal freedom and the unfathomable depths of the human spirit’.
