Jokes Mother was having a hard time getting her son to go to school in the morning. "Nobody in school likes me," he complained. "The teachers don't like me, the kids don't like me, the superintendent wants to transfer me, the bus drivers hate me, the school board wants me to drop out, and the custodians have it in for me. I don't want to go to school." "But you have to go to school," said his mother sternly. "You're healthy, you have a lot to learn, you have something to offer others, you are a

I have changed my system for labeling homemade freezer meals. I used to carefully note in large clear letters, "Meatloaf" or "Pot Roast" or "Steak and Vegetables or "Chicken and Dumplings" or "Beef Pot Pie." However, I used to get frustrated when I asked my husband what he wanted for dinner because he never asked for any of those things. So, I decided to stock the freezer with what he really likes. If you look in my freezer now you'll see a whole new set of labels. You'll find dinners with neat little tags that say: "Whatever," "Anything," "I Don't Know," "I Don't Care," "Something Good," or "Food." My frustration is now reduced because no matter what my husband replies

The Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers
Photograph shows Joan Quinn Upperchurch celebrating the success of her first ascent to the summit of the Great Needle of Dunshean. This well-known sea stack off the Kerry coast rises 140 ft to a vertigo inducing one metre square platform while reaching the start of the climb involves a 180 ft abseil down a sheer sea cliff. On the same day the Needle was also successfully ascended for the first time by Josephine Tobin, Turtulla, Thurles and Brian Dunne, Templederry, which completed an excellent hattrick for the Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers Group.
You won't have to worry about vertigo but you will certainly have a great time if you take part on MidTipp Hillwalkers next big event, which is strictly for those who enjoy keeping their two feet firmly on the ground. The 14th annual Autumn Charity Challenge, which this year takes place among the unmatched scenery of the Cooley and Mourne Mountains, offers all comers some of the best walking in Ireland suitable for all fitness levels. The event, which takes place from, Fri Oct 14 to Sun Oct 16, is open to all - including newcomers to outdoor walking - wishing to support the cause of blind people. If you might like to participate the entire weekend, including hotel accommodation, costs just 189 euro and further information can be had from Michael Sutton, 17 Willowmere Drive, Thurles Co Tipp; Tel: 0504-21482 or 086–4009989; email michaelsutton1949@gmail.com

The Brehon Marriage Laws The Brehon marriage laws of Ireland were quite different to the laws we now have in Ireland, although, with the removal of the concept of illegitimacy and the introduction of divorce in recent decades, we are moving back in that direction. Brehon Laws were first set down on parchment in the 7th century and survived until the 17th century when it was finally supplanted by the English common law

Marriage could be by contract, but, also, any sexual union which produced offspring was considered a marriage. All marriages involved duties of one spouse to the other as well as obligations in relation to one's children. A person could, under this system, have multiple marriages. Husband and wife held separate property, unlike the English law which gave a wife's property over to her husband. The spouse moving into the other's territory took his/her cattle with him/her. A husband usually paid a Coibhce (pronounce Kivka) or brideprice to the bride's father, and, over a period of years, to the bride. If the marriage was not successful, that spouse went back to his/her own people, taking with him/her the cattle
brought in and their increase. In addition, a payment of compensation might arise between the spouses, depending on the nature of the contract of marriage and the circumstances of the split-up. If the break-up was the wife's fault, the bride-price was returned to the husband; but not if it was the husband's. Marriage of propertied people was often for 20 years initially, with a renewal if the parties so agreed. The marriage itself was often preceded by a trial marriage. These laws continued into the Christian period and were apparently supported by St Columba at the conference of Drom Ceat, (pronounce Drumm Kyat), (575 A.D.). The Norman and English invaders, by contrast, attempted to impose moral law. They enforced monogamous marriage, and disenfranchised "illegitimate" children. In their enthusiasm for punishing crime, the idea of compensating the victims became of lesser importance. Imprisonment replaced bondage. (Editors note to wife: I’m still waiting for my cattle)

Book Review
Review by Elizabeth O’Shea
The Greatest Brigade By Thomas J Craughwell In a recent Drive Time radio diary, Joe O’Connor talked about the forgotten Irish soldiers of the US civil war. Hundreds of thousands of Irish soldiers fought on both sides of the conflict, and their participation made a massive contribution to the war effort and, as a result, directly improved attitudes toward Irish people in the US. Thomas J Craughwell’s The Greatest Brigade is amply illustrated with maps, photos, and engravings that bring alive his text. Clearly and engagingly written, the book explains how and why the brigade was formed and details its significant contribution – and losses – at the major battles of the US civil war. The Greatest Brigade is an excellent book for anyone interested in this key war in US history, which is certainly
one of the most important events in the formation of the modern USA, and in the history of the Irish diaspora. The generously illustrations and wellthought design also make The Greatest Brigade a great pleasure to read. The Greatest Brigade is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open WedThu 10.30am-5pm, Fri 10.30am6pm, Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Lough Derg Yacht Club Eoin Keller won the Irish Laser National Championships LDYC sailor, Eoin Keller won the Irish Laser National Championships in the Laser Radial fleet. This is the first time in thirty years that a laser sailor has won the National Championship at their home club. Lough Derg Yacht Club hosted the Irish Laser National Championship from 25 to 28 August. A total of 151 sailors participated in the event. Sailors travelled from all over Ireland and the UK to race in the event. The Laser class has three rig categories according to the sail size: the 4.7 Lasers (48 boats), the Laser Radials (71 boats) and the Standard or full rigs (32 boats). Hosting a National event for such a large fleet requires considerable organisation, both on and off the water. LDYC Sailing Secretary, Michael McCarney, said that the “seventy plus volunteers, helping out at the event, ensured four great days of racing”. He said that the “wildly varying weather conditions
provided quite a challenge for sailors and race management”. He added that “events such as this help to promote tourism and the local economy of this scenic area”. The Principal Race Officer for the event was John Lefroy. He conducted the races from his boat the 'Phoenix', and managed to get ten races in very changeable weather conditions. Liam Moloney and his team managed the finishing line on his yacht, 'Synergy'. John Lefroy said that he was “very impressed with the mark laying and rescue”, and added that “the sailors were well tired at the end of the four days as I set demanding courses. Competitors at this level want to be stretched at these events”. Jack Bayly and Teresa Hassey collated and posted the race results promptly every day. Club Manager Claire Toohey coordinated Safety and Rescue for the Championship. This is a vital task,

Claire commented that her brief was made easier by “top notch, well-trained local rescue crew, who did a superb job in quite testing conditions”. Summing up at the prize-giving, LDYC Commodore Lucy Sanders said, “I was impressed by the number of members who gave of their time to help out, particularly the younger members, who are the future of this Club”. She went on to praise the work of the shore crew, including P. It goes to show the high esteem that Mick was held in around the County. At the end of full time it was honours even so extra time had to be played. In the end Borris-Ileigh came out on top. The cup was presented by Martin Cowan (Micks brother) to Mark Bourke the winning captain. Next year it will be played in Moyne/Templetuohy. Thurles parents and friends of people with special needs summer camp concluded on Friday last with a fantastic party at the Guardian Angel Resource Centre at the Pallotine College. Each participant was presented with a certificate and photos of the eventful week by camp co-ordinator Evelyn Nevin. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the camp such a happy and carefree event. An average of 25 children accompanied by their individual helpers departred from the Pallotine College for different destinations every day. Wednesday was perhaps the highlight of the week as we travelled to the capital, following an invite from Butler's, to drop into to any child's paradise; i.e. a Chocalate Factory. Over two magical hours were spent on the north side of Dublin where we were shown how chocalate was made and more importantly how it actually tasted. Thanks to Butler's choclates and all our hosts during the past week for helping to put loads of
smiles (and chocalate!) on all our faces.Well done to all the leaving cert students and best wishes for the future. Respite Saturday for the month of September will be our next get together.

‘Get jiggy with us’ One year on and Flynn O’Kane Academy of Dance has had a very busy and exciting year!!! The dancing duo really have achieved the goals and aims that were so important for their Academy. They have watched their students grow in confidence and have created an exciting buzz within the Academy while learning to dance. The children really love what they are doing and their happiness and enthusiasm is very satisfying for Bernadette and Damien as teachers. Their students had great competitive success at their first Mini-Munster Championships taking home many top awards. They also had students compete at the Munster and All-Ireland Championships this year. During the year their hip hop dance workshops proved very popular. But for Bernadette and Damien they achieved one of their main goals when they put into practice ‘Irish Dance with a Twist’ and staged a twenty minute performance as part of their summer school programme.
'Get Jiggy With Us'
This truly is a ‘Dance for a new generation’. Bernadette and Damien still managed to keep their ties with Lord of the Dance when they both performed with Michael Flatley for Prince Charles and Camilla in Buckingham Palace in February. Bernadette also flew to London and New York for the premieres of the ‘Lord of the Dance 3D Movie’ which was shown in cinemas across the world. The DVD of the show starring Bernadette is released this month. The Academy also created an Irish Dance programme for adults called ‘Dancercise’. They will be offering adult classes in various locations from mid-September. They are extremely excited for another year of dance and new and exciting things ahead!!! ‘Come on, get jiggy with us’.

Same finalists 3 in a row It is the first time since 1903 that the same opponents will meet for the 3rd year in a row in the All Ireland final. Cork and London met in 1901, 02 and 03 with London winning in 01 and Cork in 02 and 03. One important distinction is that London automatically qualified for the final in those days.

First and Last When Kilkenny beat Tipperary in the 1922 Final, played on September 9th 1923, it was the last occasion that the counties played without numbers on their jerseys. If identification wasn’t hard enough, many of the players wore caps in the fashion of the time. Played with the Tipperary v Sligo All Ireland Football Semi Final of 1922, the crowd was calculated at 26,000. Kilkenny’s two late goals by Paddy O’Donoghue and Dick Tobin won the day, after the teams had been level at half time. Team captain, Wattie Dunphy, became the first Kilkenny man to receive the Liam MacCarthy cup.

Half Full Tipperary / Kilkenny Finals are generally hard won but a good first half sets the tone. In the 15 Finals between the counties (excluding the substitute contest in 1911, when Limerick withdrew) Tipperary won 10 and Kilkenny 5. Only twice in those Finals, did the team which led at half time, lose the match. Tipperary won eight finals (1895, 1898, 1916, 1937, 1945, 1964, 1971, 2010) having led at half time, one after being level at the break (1991) and one (1950) despite Kilkenny leading at half way. Kilkenny won three (1909, 1913, 2009) after going in ahead at half time, one (1967) after trailing and one (1922) from a half time position of equality.

The Decies beat Kilkenny in the 1959 Final replay by 3-12 to 1-10 for their last All Ireland success.

Declan Ryan (Clonoulty Rossmore), Tommy Dunne (Toomevara) and Michael Gleeson (Thurles Sarsfields) are in their first season in charge of the Tipperary Senior Hurling team.
Declan Ryan was Manager of the Tipperary minor hurling team in 2007 when they won the All Irleand title. Tommy Dunne was coach and Michael Gleeson was a selector. Tommy Dunne was coach to the Tipperary U-21 team which won last year’s All Ireland title and was also Manager of the Toomevara senior hurling team last year. Michael Gleeson managed Thurles Sarsfields to victory in the Tipperary senior hurling championship in 2009 and 2010 and has also managed Thurles Sarsfields minor teams to win county titles in both hurling and football. Declan Ryan won three All Ireland senior hurling medals with Tipperary in 1989, 1991 and 2001. He played 41 championship games for Tipperary between 1988 and 2001, scoring 9-64 in 26 wins, 4 draws and 11 defeats. He represented Tipperary at minor and under 21 levels and captained the under 21 team to win Munster and All Ireland titles in 1989. He also won 4 National Hurling League medals, 5 Munster senior hurling championship medals, 2 All Star awards and 2 county senior hurling championship medals with his club, Clonoulty Rossmore, in 1989 and 1997.
between 1993 and 2005, scoring 6109 in 24 wins, 4 draws and 16 defeats. He won an All Ireland under 21 hurling medal in 1995 and also represented Tipperary at minor in 1991 and 1992. He won 10 Tipperary county senior hurling championships with his club, Toomevara, including 2 as captain and 3 Munster club championship medals. He also won 3 National Hurling League medals, 2 as captain, 2 Munster senior hurling championship medals, a Munster minor championship medal and 3 All Star awards.
Michael Gleeson played senior hurling for Tipperary against Clare in the 1977 Munster senior hurling championship. He also played in the 1975/76 and 76/77 National Hurling Leagues. He played senior hurling with Thurles Sarsfields for 10 years between 1974 and 1983, winning a county championship medal in 1974 and 3 Mid Division senior hurling medals. He began his career in team management with the Durlas Óg club in Thurles and has made a major contribution to the recent revival in the fortunes of Thurles Sarsfields at underage and adult level. All Ireland Hurling Final
Did you know? Dethroning the champions When Kilkenny met Tipp in the 1964 All Ireland final they were defending the title, won against Waterford in a high scoring decider (4-17 to 6-8) the previous year. The Leinster champions were favourites to win the game, but were beaten by double scores 5-13 to 2-8. Tipperary led by 1-8 to 0-6 at half time. The game was refereed by Aubrey Higgins from Galway – the last time a Connacht man refereed the All Ireland final. Tipperary had previously dethroned Kilkenny in the 1958 semi final, again after the black and amber had beaten Waterford in the previous decider. Tipperary’s win last year was their third time to dethrone Kilkenny. Kilkenny have dethroned Tipperary on two occasions, the 1909 Final and the 2002 All Ireland semi final.
Hurling Hotbed During his time as a student, at St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, Eoin Kelly played in two Colleges’ All Ireland Finals. Despite scoring 1-7 in the 1999 final at Croke Park, he lost to a St Flannan’s College team, captained by Ballinahinch’s Dermot Gleeson and powered by Toomevara’s Benny Dunne, who scored 0-3. There was a happy ending to the 2000 Final at Nenagh, when Eoin, who lined out at centre forward and scored 0-7, avenged the previous year’s defeat. His colleagues on that winning team included current Kilkenny senior hurlers Tommy Walsh, Brian Hogan, Jackie Tyrrell and Michael Rice, who is now a teacher in the college.
Golden Gate Tipperary’s victory over Kilkenny in the 1950 decider might not have produced the highest final attendance but the gate receipts of £6,103 -14 -2 set a new record for a hurling final.
A Star Trio of Counties The late Mick Ryan (Roscrea) won a Kilkenny County Senior Hurling title with Dicksboro in 1950. They beat Éire Óg (city) in a final replay by 4-6 to 1-5. He lined out at centre forward in the club’s first victory for twenty four years. His team mates included Dan Kennedy, who had faced Mick in the All Ireland final a couple of months earlier. Mick died in 2007, but is remembered fondly in Tipperary,
Kilkenny and Cork, where he played successfully with Blackrock and St. Finbarrs in hurling and Clonakilty in football.
Marksmen Supreme When you consider that Kilkenny’s Eddie Keher shot an amazing 0-14 in the sixty minute 1963 All Ireland Final against Waterford, it was always possible that he would surpass it in the years ahead. The introduction of the eighty minute games (1970) improved his chances and in the 1971 Final against Tipperary, Eddie scored 2-11 in Kilkenny’s three point loss to establish a new record. The games were reduced to seventy minutes for the 1975 championship and it took a tour de force from Nicky English in the 1989 Final when he scored 2-12 against Antrim to break Keher’s eighteen year old record. Eoin Kelly’s performance in the 2009 70 minute final with 0-13 is very worthy of mention among impressive final scoring achievements.

Hard to believe These days All Ireland Hurling Semi Finals are played at Croke Park (the last exception was the Offaly v Clare Saturday refixture in 1998, which was played at Semple Stadium). So, it is hard to believe that the first ever championship meeting, between Tipperary and Kilkenny, was played at Urlingford on October 27th 1887. That Semi Final was played on a Thursday and the reason was that when the teams went to Clonmel to play the game on the previous Sunday, other games were in progress and planned as the South Tipperary Board was in dispute with the Central Council. In the circumstances, the teams arranged to play on the following Thursday in Urlingford. Interestingly, Tullaroan objected to some of the Thurles players before the game started on the grounds that they were not from the parish. This was accepted but Thurles had no difficulty getting replacements from among their supporters. There were plenty willing to take the place of those who could not play. It was reported that Frank Moloney ’’ refereed with much difficulty’’. The venue minimised travel for the teams, but you wonder how much difficulty players and supporters had in getting time off work, for the most important hurling game played in Ireland under the auspices of the GAA up to then.

Fourth Day Tipperary and Kilkenny have never before played on September 4th. The counties have played in finals on September 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 9th. The 4th might serve as a warning to Tipperary, who previously lost finals on that date to Wexford (1960) and Galway (1988). Their only final win on that date was against Laois in 1949.

Karen to represent Gaisce at the International Gold Event in Kenya
Music Network presents Fonn Aniar/Tune from the West— Breanndán Ó Beaghlaoich, Tommy Peoples, and Laoise Kelly—at St. Kieran’s Church of Ireland, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary on Saturday, 17 September.
Gaisce Gold Award Holder and President’s Award Leader (PAL) Karen Hardiman from Templemore has been chosen to represent Gaisce and Ireland at the upcoming International Gold Event (IGE) in Kenya this September. She will be joined there by fellow attendee Eoin Kenny, outgoing regional Youth Representative Josie McGee and past attendee and current event organiser Janice Mustafova.
"The most maddeningly nourishing, elevating, and mesmerising Irish music you’ll hear today" Earle Hitchner, The Irish Echo, on Breanndán Ó Beaghlaoich (with Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh) "Tommy Peoples gracefully occupies a prime authoritative position on the top shelf of Traditional fiddle players…one of the few traditional players whose music regularly elicits from his listeners words such as passion, tension, ferocious, dark, emotion, grip, electric, friction, tautness, rawness, beauty." The Journal of Music "Kelly virtually reinvents the instrument with her rhythmic and melodic intricacy, her syncopation and undulating chords and harmonies . . . she'll have you swaying with her profound musicality." Irish Times
Brace yourself for a clash of the titans as a trio of trad’s finest join forces for this unmissable tour. With three distinct regional styles going head-to-head, every tune promises to be something of an adventure. Representing the Dingle Peninsula is genial giant Breanndán Ó Beaghlaoich, whose fiery button accordion playing and heartfelt singing echo the stormy beauty of the West Kerry coastline. With three highly-acclaimed solo albums to his name, Ó Beaghlaoich is also held in high esteem for his work with the groups Boys of the Lough and Beginish and his collaborations with the Chieftains and fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. Winner of the first ever TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year Award, trad legend Tommy Peoples brings the rabble-rousing Donegal
fiddle style to the party. After recording classic albums with the Bothy Band, Matt Molloy and Paul Brady in the 1970s, Peoples’ compositions and solo performances have inspired a generation of fiddle players. Equally influential is virtuoso harpist Laoise Kelly, who has breathed new life into the national instrument with her reinterpretation of the O'Carolan canon. Though Kelly has toured the world, collaborating with everyone from Seamus Heaney and Kate Bush to The Chieftains, Sharon Shannon and Dónal Lunny, don’t be surprised to hear her Mayo roots to the fore as she gets those feet a-tapping! Tickets priced €15 / €12. Tickets are available from Austin’s Centra and Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, McQuaid’s Traditional Music Shop, Nenagh, and by telephoning 0505 42123 Wednesday-Sunday. This concert is promoted by Music Network and Cloughjordan Community Development Committee. Music Network tours provide a wonderful opportunity to see some of the world’s foremost music ensembles at affordable prices in venues around Ireland and are presented in association with RTÉ lyric fm. Music Network is funded by the Arts Council. Further information from (01) 671 9429 or www.musicnetwork.ie.
The attendees will complete a number of physical activities throughout the duration of the event including rock climbing, hiking and white water rafting while the service project will see them refurbish four local primary schools. Themed ‘Each One, Reach One’ , the event will encourage each attendee to use what they gain from the IGE experience to reach one goal they have set so as to be of value for themselves, their community, their country and the world. Speaking on behalf of the President’s Award Kenya, Africa’s Regional Director Edwin Kimani stated ‘the programme is formed of four pillars: Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Skills Development and Adventurous Journey that will help youth unlock their potential, develop self-reliance, social awareness, leadership and good citizenship’.
The IGE also aims to inspire and instruct those who have attained the highest level of the Award in their country to undertake leadership roles nationally, regionally and globally. The first event of this kind known as The Commonwealth Gold Expedition was hosted by Canada in 1967 and its emphasis was on expeditionary ventures. Since then the event has grown to encompass soft skills training, service projects, cultural exchange events with a strong emphasis on character building and leadership development. Key activities during the event shall include the Youth Forum where attendees will interact with key stakeholders including HRH Prince Edward regarding the future development of the award and the election of regional Youth Representatives for the International Council (IC). Gaisce-the President’s Award is a member of the International Award Association (IAA) and has been operating in Ireland since 1985. The Duke of Edinburgh Award was founded in 1956 by his Royal Highness Prince Philip, Lord Hunt, the leader of the first successful ascent of Everest and the German Educationalist Kurt Hahn who believed in the philosophy of holistic education. In recent days the attendees were kindly welcomed as guests of honour at the Kenyan Embassy in Dublin where they were informed about the interesting history, culture and wildlife of the host nation. Further information about the award in Ireland can be found at www.gaisce.ie or about the International Gold Event at www.intaward.org/ige

Councillor Morris claims another success from his sports tourism initiative I can confirm that that Delbarton High School From Morristown New Jersey have booked into the Abbey Court Hotel from 15th to 18TH March to add to Okan ss R.F.C from Canada for that week alone. That is 80 extra tourists for the area in that week alone and the possibility of two more groups in the pipeline. Delbarton High School is one of the eminent high schools in America and there presence in Nenagh is evidence of the success of the Sports Tourism initiative that I have driven in my time as a councillor. Of course I would not have had the ability to drive this on if it wasn’t for the support of my fellow councillors or the fantastic ambassadors that we have in our sports clubs in the town or indeed the very welcoming public that we have in our naturally friendly town. Nenagh is a perfect location for Catholic High schools tours because of its size and manageability where the children’s parents can feel happy with the safety of their children in our town. I can also confirm a major conference for Nenaghf for the 23rd to the 25th September in the Abbey Court Hotel which will explore the
role of the council in encouraging and supporting the development of Enterprise through Tourism and sport using Nenagh as a template. The key objectives of the conference will be to explore the importance of sport as a tourist attraction, the current value of tourism to the Irish Economy. Developing niche market tourism in the area, researching potential markets for new sporting events to be held in Ireland, the importance of inclusion in core strategy and facilitating a brainstorming session and action plan development The conference will bring delegates from all over the country to listen to John Delaney Chief Executive F.A.I, John Sweeney Clare Sports Partnership George Hook Junior of Irishrugby tours Theresa Mulvihill Smart Marketing ltd. The F.A.I and Shannon development will have information stalls over the weekend. I would encourage all tourist providers to take advantage of the brainstorming sessions with such experts. I look forward in announcing further groups for the town as they book into the Abbey Court Hotel in the near future.

Harvesting Shannon’s Waters Bord na Móna recently addressed the Oireachtas environment, transport, culture and Gaeltacht committee. The next day they bussed some of its members with media in attendance for a day out in the beautiful Midland bogs. They were taking advantage of slow news in the silly season to publicise and promote Dublin City Council’s scheme to pump water from the Shannon near Portumna to the Dublin Region via Garryhinch cut-away bog near Portarlington. They promised gifts for everyone – 350 million litres of water a day for the Dublin Region and places along the way; a lake for water sports with a nature reserve for the Midlands; and 1000 construction jobs to build it. But beware Bord na Móna and Dublin City Council bearing gifts – this massive scheme is being driven by huge commercial interests. Chief executive Gabriel D’Arcy let the cat out of the bag – with turf running out he plans to transform Bord na Móna into a highly profitable water utility, selling the water they take from the Shannon to consumers in the East. They are already in discussion with consultants appointed by the Minister of the Environment about setting up a national water board to run the entire country’s water supply. We in the River Shannon Protection Alliance oppose this scheme – not because we seek selfishly to deny water to our fellow citizens in Dublin, but because we believe it is a bad scheme, not just for the Shannon but for Dublin water consumers as well. First, we do not believe assurances that water extraction on this scale will not damage the Shannon system. The plan is to pump at the maximum rate for 10 months of the year and at a lower rate for two, not just at periods of high flow. At low flow the reduced flow-rate through Lough Derg will threaten water quality, and to maintain levels and flows in the lower Shannon, there will be pressure to open sluices higher up, reducing water levels and flows in the middle and upper Shannon, and threatening navigation. This is why we call on public representatives to demand an independent review of the impact of the scheme on the ecology and hydrology of the entire system, paid for at arms length by the promoters of the scheme, but independent of them. An Environmental Impact Statement prepared by consultants in the pockets of the promoters cannot be trusted to be objective. Second, we believe that this scheme is not the best way to meet the Dublin Region’s needs for water. It is based on unrealistic Celtic Tiger era forecasts for demand to increase by 50% by 2040. Recent figures show that demand is static or falling. This will not change anytime soon because of our State’s
economic woes. The planned introduction of water metering and charging will reduce demand, as it has elsewhere. And changes to planning regulations to promote rain water harvesting would further reduce demand for treated water. Around 30% of expensively treated water is wasted by leaks at present. A concerted programme to reduce leakage to European best practice levels could save 100 million litres per day – as well as providing much needed employment. If demand turns out to be much less than forecast the cost of water supplied to the Dublin Region will be higher than necessary. Dublin consumers will pay a high water charge unless subsidised by consumers elsewhere. If the scheme is built as a PPP, the State could find itself compensating a private water utility, as is already happening with motorway tolls. The scheme is being presented as the only way to supply the Dublin Region with enough water. But it is simply not true that there is no alternative to the Shannon. 100 million litres per day is available from groundwater in the Fingal-Meath aquifer. There are great opportunities to reuse water, as is done in other cities. For instance, the output from the Ringsend treatment works could be injected at Leixlip to maintain water levels below the weir while extracting up to an additional 100 million litres per day from the Liffey above it. Such incremental alternatives should be explored before committing to a risky big bang scheme, in which not one drop of water will be provided until the entire cost has been incurred.

This is why we call on public representatives to demand an independent review of the demand assumptions underlying the scheme, and alternative ways to meet realistic demand. And such a review must be genuinely independent – consultants already identified with the scheme cannot be seen as independent. So what of the gifts being promised? ∙ Surely 350 million unnecessary litres of expensive water per day are not so much a gift as an economic millstone. ∙ Surely it would be madness to risk the existing natural heritage, recreational and tourism value of the Shannon and its lakes in exchange for a new man-made lake and a nature reserve just a few miles away in the Midlands. ∙ Surely it would make more sense to create 1000 jobs in a concerted programme to fix leaks in Dublin before pumping Shannon water there to leak into the ground.

Counselling Depression
(Continued from last issue)
I am very interested in what is called developmental or lifespan psychology. This type of psychology looks at various life stages of the entire life span, and emphasises how important it is to meet the challenges of each stage, so that the next one can be successfully negotiated. This brand of psychology suggests that a person can get stuck in a particular life stage, and, for example, this would make it difficult to meet the challenges of old age. So I would like to look at depression in the context of some life stages. I will concentrate in these articles on preschool to late adolescence and old age. For many years depression was considered a complaint of middle age or older. Recent research has shown, however, that depression normally begins early in a person’s life. It seems that the initial onset of depression is typically between the ages of 16 and 20, but can begin at 13. A lot of research has been done on adolescent depression, and there is increasing alarm at the significant upswing in the rates of depression (and suicide) among this population in recent years in Ireland. In my own limited experience I have encountered quite a number of depressed teenagers, who had experienced a loss either of a relationship or the death of a parent or friend. The loss of a romantic relationship can be particularly devastating to a young person, and adults often fail to recognise this devastation. I feel that broken relationships are a significant cause of suicide. I understand from a member of Living Links, an organisation, devoted entirely to suicide, that a massive study is being done to pinpoint the reasons for suicide, and thus help to stem the tsunami that is engulfing this country at present. Living Links provides outreach support and can be reached at ph. 067 439991 or 087 4122 052. There is also a very good website on Living Links. I did a few days training with them and can vouch that it is an excellent organisation, now spreading throughout Ireland. Suicide is most prevalent among those in their late teens and among young adult males in particular, but, as I have said, major depression in young people can occur around the age of 13. Unipolar depression is relatively rare under that age. The earlier the age of onset the more severe the depression is, with increased chance of recurring, becoming chronic (ongoing), and leading to adult depression. Depressed children tend to have dysthymia followed by major depression, and usually there is a high degree of depressive conditions in relatives. While for adults, dysthymia must persist for 2 years, with children it must last for at least 1 year, and it differs from major depression in that it has fewer symptoms such as lack of pleasure in pleasurable activities or events, social withdrawal,

fatigue, reduced sleep and poor appetite. It may present in preschool children. This severe disorder appears in about two thirds of those presenting with depression in those early life-stages. Those presenting with early onset dysthymia have significantly higher rates of personality and substance abuse disorders, and higher rates of past major depressive episodes than later-onset dysthymia individuals. Frequently, depression in children is a response to psychosocial (the interaction of a mixture of psychological and social influences) and dysfunctional family life. There is a very high risk of the children of a depressed parent developing depression, and this is true of even infants and toddlers. According to Aware the risk is particularly high if the parent experiences recurrent depression. There is also a strong correlation between childhood abuse and recurrent depression in later life. My own experience with clients suggests that sexual abuse has a more severe long term depressive impact, breeding enormous rage, suicidal thoughts, and a cloud of depression on the unfortunate victims. Some psychologists, however, feel that only those who had suffered severe sexual abuse (penetration or attempted penetration) suffer adult depression as a result. I do not agree with this. I think any form of unwanted intimate touching and a breaching of one’s most sacred boundaries inflicts enormous pain on people, and is likely to result in depression at an early stage. Abuse can run across families for generations, and this history of abuse can create vulnerability to depression among family members from one generation to the next.
