'Tell a child what to think and you make him a slave to your knowledge. Teach him how to think and you make knowledge his slave.' Henry Taiit
An elderly man in Donegal calls his son in London and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough." "Dad, what are you talking about?" the son screams. "We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the old man says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Paris and tell her," and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "They're not getting divorced if I have anything to do about it," she shouts, "I'll take care of this."
She calls home immediately, and screams at the old man, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife and says, "Okay, they're coming for Easter...now what do we tell them for Christmas?"
The man told his doctor he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said,

"Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what's wrong with me." "Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "You're just a plain old lazy bum." "Thank You." said the man. "Now give me the medical term, so I can tell my wife!"
The Priest said, "There's no such thing as a perfect woman. Anybody present who has ever known a perfect woman, stand up." Nobody stood up. "Those who have ever known a perfect man, stand up." One elderly gentleman stood up. "Are you honestly saying you knew an absolutely perfect man?" he asked, somewhat amazed. "Well now, I didn't know him personally," replied the little old man, "but I have heard a great deal about him. He was my wife's first husband."
A panda bear walks into a bar and orders a sandwich. The waiter brings him the sandwich. The panda bear eats it, pulls out a pistol, kills the waiter, and gets up and starts to walk out. The bartender yells for him to stop. The panda bear asks, "What do you want?" The bartender replies, "First you come in here, order food, kill my waiter, then try to go without paying for your food." The panda bear turns around and says, "Hey! I'm a Panda. Look it up!" The bartender goes into the back room and looks up panda bear in the encyclopedia, which read: "Panda: a bearlike marsupial originating in Asian regions. Known largely for it's stark black and white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves."

Once again it is time for the Bellefield Gardens Autumn Open Day Saturday, 17th September from 11 am to 4.30 pm in Shinrone, Co. Offaly. This is a last chance to enjoy the remains of Summer before Winter closes in! The garden is still looking good - despite the winds that are blowing! We still have the wonderful reds, yellows and bronzes of Autumn leaves and flowers. The Autumn border is looking particularly good. The fruit and vegetable garden has been excellent this Summer with an abundance of goodies to be prepared and kept for the Winter. Highlights on Saturday will include a huge array of Spring and Autumn flowering plants and bulbs to buy in
the Courtyard. Special plants will include new varieties of Clematis, hellebores, cyclamen, nerines and other Spring flowering plants. There will be talks on what bulbs to plant for a succession of Spring colour. For the ‘foodie’ gardener, we will have a walk through the vegetable garden with advice and instruction from Dee Sewell of Greenside Up. There will be local food producers demonstrating their favourite dishes.... and there will be an opportunity to purchase the flavoursome foods made by local artisans. And when you have absorbed all that knowledge there will be time to sit and enjoy homemade coffee and cakes in the Stable. Entrance fee: €5.00

On Sunday, 18 September, Blas an Fhomhair makes a welcome return to Kenyon Street, Nenagh. In keeping with the tradition, our guest chef this year again is Hugo Arnold, well known food writer, chef and consultant. Blas an Fhomhair is a celebration of local organic foods during National Organic Week. Speaking about this event, Peter Ward of Country Choice said that he was delighted to provide a platform to the great exponents of organic food in the area. He stated that the quantity and taste of the food speaks for itself.
This year’s programme features the lamb of Michael Seymour, the pork of J.P Crowe, the root veg of Philip Draper and the leaves and tomatoes of Dermot O’Mara of Sunny Meadows in Portumna. The featured cheese is Mossfield from the Haslam farm in Birr. This year there is a meet and greet the producer. All of our producer farmers will be on hand to dispense information and advice freely on organic farming and cultivation from gardens to large scale. Guests can speak directly with the many local organic producers as well as tasting the featured local organic foods.

Build It with Pallets By Joe Jacobs The Good Life Press publishes a range of very useful books for smallholders and home farmers. In our corner of Tipperary, their most popular book is Joe Jacob’s Build It! with Pallets. Pallets are a great source of sturdy wood for numerous projects (other than blocking up gaps in hedges), and Build It! with Pallets gives clear instructions accompanied by useful photos and illustrations that guide you through building fencing, tables, chairs, shelving, benches, chicken housing, and numerous other projects from pallets. On page 6 of the book, there’s a great picture of the author standing on one of his completed pallet projects. Most important, perhaps, is the introduction, which explains where to get pallets, what tools you need, and how to take them apart without damaging the wood or yourself. And then you’re ready to build! Build It! with Pallets is a handy-sized paperback which means it is easy to
take it with you when you’re working on your pallet projects. If you’re interested in a wider range of DIY farming projects, you would also enjoy and use Joe Jacob’s Build It! DIY Project for Farmers, Smallholders and Gardeners. Using the same format at the pallet book, Joe Jacobs clearly explains how to build allsorts, from renewable energy installations to double beds to easily movable polytunnels. Build It! with Pallets is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open WedThu 10.30am-5.30pm, Fri-Sat 10am6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Toomevara end 14 year wait to claim 7s glory
Dundrum AC
By David Kelly Toomevara defeated Limerick side Killeedy to land the Kilmacud AllIreland 7s title on Saturday last. The team overturned an eight point (semi final) deficit with 6 mins remaining to run out eventual five point winners vs Laois kingpins (the Harps). The Premier side ran riot in the final with Louise Young (player of the tournament), Maria Tynan and Aoife Ryan causing the Killeedy defence countless problems. Young bagged 2-3 in the opening half as the Greyhounds laid siege to the Killeedy goal. Aoife Ryan contributed 1-3 in the second period to end the game as a contest-thus ensuring the cup stays in Tipperary for at least another year. The Shannonsiders were starved of primary possession by stalwarts Teresa Ryan, Trisha Ryan and Suzanne Kelly in defence. Former Tipperary great Noelle Kennedy showed she still has plenty left to offer with some inspired performances, but minor sharpshooters Aoife Ryan and Nicole Walsh stole the show with a series of vintage displays.
UL and Toomevara representative Aine Brislane won the poc fada competition after a tense duel with Clare starlet Chloe Morey (Sixmilebridge). Congrats to Teresa Ryan and Elaine Young (joint captains)/the management quartet of Jackie Meagher, Brendan Kenny, Thomas Hassett and Donal Kelly. Huge plaudits must also go to Daintree Paper and the Kilmacud GAA Club for organizing and sponsoring such a fantastic and worthwhile event. The support received from near neighbours Borrisoleigh was immensely appreciated. Thanks to Pat McCormack and Mark Harty who worked tirelessly as maor uisces for the day.
Toomevara panel and final scorers: Paula Ryan, Trisha Ryan, Suzanne Kelly, Teresa Ryan, Maria Tynan (11), Louise Young (2-3), Nicole Walsh (0-2, 1 free), Aoife Ryan (1-5, 2 frees), Noelle Kennedy.

Nenagh Choral Society stages ‘Les Misérables’ On September 28th for 4 nights only Nenagh Choral Society stages possibly one of the greatest musicals ever written ‘Les Misérables’. Staging this show is a long time ambition of the society. Under the production team of Greg Browne, Laura Kearney and Naomi Morrissey the society established a youth academy under which it stages this show and have been granted full performance rights from Josef Weinberger in the UK. Rehearsals for this full production show began at the beginning of the school holidays and the society experienced a surge in its facebook fans as the younger generation latched onto the idea of being in a great show. Working hard through the summer the cast all of whom are under 19 have had ‘the time of their lives’and as the final weeks unfold they are now perfecting every move and every song.
Back Row (L to R): L. Young, S. Kelly, P. Ryan, A. Ryan, N. Kennedy. Front Row: M. Tynan, N. Walsh, E. Young, T. Ryan (joint captains), Trisha Ryan.
This epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes an honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father - violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector
Javert, who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed. Tickets for the show go on sale Saturday 17th September from DK Travel or on 086-3122725. With only 4 shows early booking is advisable. With tickets from €10 for a child and €15 for an adult, Nenagh Choral Society have kept the ticket prices low. ‘Les Misérables’ runs from September 28th – October 1st at St Joseph's CBS Secondary School Hall at 8pm nightly. As current members and past members on behalf of the committee we wish to advise that our 2011/12 season is dedicated to the memory of those very close to us that we lost since staging Hot Mikado in March. Rest in peace our good friends. On behalf of the committee and members we hope you will come along to support this show.

Prayer to St.Anthony O Holy St Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble & anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me....(here mention your request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. I have written a long series of articles on abuse, and will probably write a small book on it. It is soul murderer, and is a deep root of the noxious grey bloom of depression. Abuse is at the heart of bullying, and there is a link between bullying and depression. Following the normal pattern, this depression may recur in adult life. The best studies on bullying and depression are done in Finland, where they are carried out each year since 1995. Professor Kaltiala-Heino and his colleagues in one study of 410 Finnish students aged 14-16, found that there was an increased prevalence of depression and suicidal thinking among both victims and bullies.

Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles. Ph.087-8211009 www.jimoshea.net. Jim O’Shea’s book ‘When a child dies. Footsteps of a Grieving Family’ is published by Veritas. The royalties from this book will go the the Perhaps an understanding of John Children’s Bowlby’s attachment theory might be an Hospital in advantage in getting further understand- Crumlin ing of depression in relation to human development. What I am about to write about Bowlby is an inadequate sketch of Jim O’Shea’s his theory, but it will give you some idea new book of what he was about. Bowlby was a called Abuse, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who was intensely interested in affectionless chilabout domestic viodren, and what had prevented them from lence, workplace and developing affection and emotional school bullying is warmth. Some of his research concennow available on trated on early separation of children Amazon, published from their principal caregiver, normally by Cork University the mother. As stated above, the loss of a Press and in Bookmother or a caregiver is not the main shops. cause of long term depression, but the
A positive and supportive family environment is vital for the proper development of the child; otherwise it leaves him vulnerable to depression. There is evidence that parental loss is less severe in bringing on depression than an ongoing loss of care following the death of a parent. In other words, the quality of parenting following the loss is crucial. When the quality is good the depression is confined to the period close to the loss, and the sadness, guilt, and other features of depression vanish. So, the quality of these early relationships is a factor in depression, as indeed is the pattern of later relationships. The importance of experiences in early childhood as a way to a healthy or unhealthy mental state cannot be overstated. Clearly, a troubled childhood, especially if there is not a close bond with the primary caretaker (an insecure attachment) may contribute to a way of thinking and living that finds it difficult to adapt to life’s circumstances. This, too, leaves the child vulnerable to depression both as a child and as an adult. Such people tend to have low self-esteem and are never good enough irrespective of their achievements. Unfortunately, until it is pointed out to them they regard such a dysfunctional childhood as normal.
quality of parenting care that follows. Separation without any subsequent emotional warmth can give rise to anxiety and despair, and ultimately detachment and denial. A child responds positively to warmth and stability, and needs a secure attachment to be able to develop properly, and to be able to love others. Of course, a child may feel abandoned not just by the loss of a mother or caregiver, but if an existing mother or caregiver does not meet the child’s emotional needs. Such a child feels emotionally abandoned, with very bad consequences, including depression. According to Bowlby the attachment figure (the caregiver) forms a secure base for the child to be able to explore the environment with confidence, and eventually become properly socialised and form warm bonds with others. In other words the development of a secure and stable attachment bond is essential for healthy development. If, however, the attachment bond is insecure, for whatever reason, the child becomes vulnerable to depression in the present or in the future. The adult carries that inner vulnerable child, and if faced with the loss of a close relationship experiences selfcriticism, feelings of abandonment, hopelessness and helplessness, and other feelings of depression. Indeed the psychologist, Prentiss Price, holds that the most significant event related to clinical depression is separation from a parent by death or otherwise. She cites the example of children who were separated from their parents during the Second World War, whose depression manifested itself in their becoming withdrawn, despondent, and agitated at separation.
