"The idea that no one is perfect is a view most commonly held by people with no grandchildren." Doug Larson

A man was stopped by a game warden in Northern Minnesota recently with two buckets of fish leaving a lake well known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, "Do you have a license to catch those fish?" The man replied to the game warden, "No, sir. These are my pet fish." "Pet fish?!" the warden replied. "Yes, sir. Every night I take these fish down to the lake and let them swim around for a while. I whistle and they jump back into their buckets, and I take em home." "That's a bunch of hooey! Fish can't do that!" The man looked at the game warden for a moment, and then said, "Here, I'll show you. It really works." "O.K. I've GOT to see this!" the game warden replied. The man poured the fish in to the water and stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to the man and said, "Well?" "Well, what?" the man asked. "When are you going to call them back?" the game warden prompted. "Call who back?" the man asked. "The FISH." "What fish?" the man asked.

"Hey, Mom," asked Johnny "Can you give me twenty quid?" "Certainly not." "If you do," he went on, "I'll tell you what dad said to the maid when you were at the beauty shop." His mother's ears perked up and, grabbing her purse, she handed over the money. "Well? What did he say?" "He said, 'Hey, Marie, make sure you wash my socks tomorrow.' "

The teacher was giving her class of seven-year-olds a natural history lesson. "Worker ants," she told them, "can carry pieces of food five times their own weight. What do you conclude from that?" One child was ready with an answer: "They don't have a union."

A young woman was taking an afternoon nap. After she woke up, she told her husband, "I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine's Day. What do you think it means?" "You'll know tonight," he said.

That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it-only to find a book entitled "The Meaning of Dreams."

A man and his wife are sitting in the living room and he says to her, "Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state dependent on some machine. If that ever happens, just pull the plug." "OK," says his wife as she gets up and unplugs the TV.

In answer to the question "What's wrong?"

"Oh. Killing any?" She asked. "Yep, 3 males, 2 Females," he replied. Intrigued, she asked. "How can you tell them apart?" He responded, "3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone."

A police recruit was asked on an exam, "What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?" In the blank, he wrote, "Call for backup."

What are the three questions most commonly asked by lawyers? 1. How much money do you have? 2. Where can you get more? 3. Do you have anything you can sell?

The wife says: The same old thing. The wife means: Nothing. The wife says: Nothing. The wife means: Everything. The wife says: Nothing, really. The wife means: It's just that you're an idiot. The wife says: I don't want to talk about it. The wife means: I'm still building up steam. A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter. "What are you doing?" She asked. "Hunting Flies" He responded.

Jack has died. His lawyer is standing before the family and reads out Jack's Last Will and Testament: "To my dear wife Esther, I leave the house, 50 acres of land, and 1 million euros. "To my son Barry, I leave my Big Lexus and the Jaguar. "To my daughter Suzy, I leave my yacht and €250,000. "And to my brother-in-law Jeff, who always insisted that health is better than wealth, I leave my treadmill."

They say charity begins at home and Ireland’s newest autism charity, Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland (AADI) is a testament to that old adage. The charity is delighted to be the beneficiaries of the Clonmel 10km Mini Marathon on Sunday October 9th. The event will start and end at the Park Hotel, Clonmel with the race getting underway at 2pm.

as the Clonmel Mini-Marathon on behalf of AADI, flag days, our online store, calendar sales and other activities but the cost of training a dog to such specific standards is enormous.

AADI has been in existence since April 2010 and to date has placed 3 trained assistance dogs and 6 companion dogs with children and their families who are dealing with autism nationwide. The dogs can provide independence and safety for the children, allowing them to go out in public, act as an unconditional source of love and affection for the child and help them to improve interaction and socialisation skills.

Nuala Geraghty, AADI’s training service manager agrees. “AADI is only up and running for just over a year and we are doing our best to train and provide as many dogs as we can but to train dogs to the proper standard is a lengthy process and demand is very high. AADI has so far made a huge difference to the lives of many autistic children. “We train dogs, mainly Labradors or Golden retrievers, as assistance dogs to help autistic children break down the barriers preventing them from interacting with society”, says Nuala. “There is really nothing like seeing the calming effect the dog can have on a child’s behaviour”.

This is how Government policy all begins... Start with a cage containing five apes. In the cage, hang a banana on a string and put stairs under it. Before long, an ape will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the Banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the apes with cold water. After a while, another ape makes an attempt with the same result - all the apes are sprayed with cold water. Continue until, when another ape tries to climb the stairs, the other apes try to prevent it.

Again, replace a third original ape with a new one. The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four apes that beat him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are participating in the beating of the newest ape.

Now, turn off the cold water. Now, remove one ape from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new ape sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his horror, all of the other apes attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

After replacing the fourth and fifth original apes, all the apes which have been sprayed with cold water have been replaced. Nevertheless, no ape ever again approaches the stairs. Why not? "Because that's the way it's always been around here." That's how Government policy begins...

Credit Access Still Hurting Small Businesses in Tipperary Lack of access to overdraft facilities or bank loans is still an issue for the small business community locally and continues to have a serious effect on trading and business operations. That’s according to the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board figures in the bi-annual Business and Banking Confidence survey, which found that over a third of small businesses nationwide felt that the availability of credit has deteriorated since January 2011, representing 37% of all those surveyed. These findings follow very similar figures from the January 2011 and July 2010 surveys, which also found that over a third of businesses felt that access to credit had worsened during the previous six months. Worryingly, a greater number of respondents also felt that their business was being curtailed by bank restrictions this year, when compared to last year. In July 2010 for example, 44% of small businesses felt that their business was being curtailed by banking restrictions, compared with 48% in July 2011. In addition, 45% of those who took part in the survey consider the effect of current banking situation on trading and business operations to

be “serious.” The survey, which is being published on-line this week by the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board, includes the views of over 1,700 sole traders and small business owners throughout the Country, including those from Tipperary. Commenting on the survey findings, Ms. Rita Guinan, C.E.O of Tipperary North County Enterprise Board said: “What this survey shows is that lack of access to credit is hurting many small businesses here and all over the country. According to our findings, small business owners and managers feel that their businesses are being curtailed as a direct result of banking restrictions. Without access to cash flow and credit, many viable businesses are going to lose sales, customers and jobs” The C.E.O added: “The Tipperary North County Enterprise Board, along with all other Enterprise Boards, has an important role to play in advising and supporting small businesses, including in the areas of access to capital and credit facilities.” As in previous surveys, there was a high level of demand reported for a

small business loan scheme concept, proposed by the County and City Enterprise Boards. Nearly 7 of out 10 respondents (69%) felt that such a scheme, to provide loans of up to €20,000 to support working capital needs, would be both “helpful and desirable.” It has also emerged that small businesses are waiting longer to get paid for their goods and services. In this survey, 64% of respondents had experienced an increased level of debtor days, compared with 60% of respondents at the start of the year. Commenting on this finding, Rita Guinan said: "At a time of significant cash flow difficulties, this increase in debtor days is a worrying trend. What it tells us, is that small business owners are waiting longer to get paid for their goods or services and this could cause cash flow problems for the whole small business community." The survey also found that nearly a third of small businesses expect turnover to be better over the next six

months, when compared with the January to June period this year (32.5% of respondents). Meanwhile, the number of business owners who feel that the current business environment was either poor or very poor, is down from January 2011 (53% felt that the overall business environment was either ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ in January 2011, compared with a figure of 48% in July 2011.) The Business and Banking Confidence Survey was carried out in July this year by the County and City Enterprise Boards around the country, which are the Government Agency with responsibility for promoting Enterprise by way of training, mentoring and grant assistance. The survey was administered and compiled by the County Enterprise Board Central Co-Ordination Unit of Enterprise Ireland and the full set of findings is available to download at www.enterpriseboards.ie or at www.tnceb.ie.

Culture Night In Cloughjordan Cloughjordan Culture Night, which was one of the 30 Culture Nights that took place all around Ireland on Friday, 23 September, and which was the first Culture Night ever held in north Tipperary, was a massive success. The 4-hour programme of free arts, heritage, and entertainment events included 14 individual events in numerous venues around Cloughjordan. Even the dogs on the street wanted to get in but couldn't. Art exhibitions, singing, literature, traditional music, heritage talks and exhibitions, and

kung fu were only some of the events that drew people from all around North Tipperary. The buzz around the village and the high quality of events was made possible by the many talented artists living in Cloughjordan and the guests who rowed in to create this wonderful evening. Many thanks go to the 34 artists and performers who participated, the organisers, and the many people who helped make sure events took place.

Choke Comedy At Nenagh Arts Centre GOAL Jersey Day Improvisational comedy comes to Nenagh on Saturday 1st October with Choke Comedy Improvised comedy is exactly as the title suggests – nothing is rehearsed, everything is created in the spur of the moment and we rely purely on the audience to make suggestions. It’s very fast moving, energizing, different every time and fantastic entertainment for everyone. If you're not sure what that is, maybe you've seen ‘Who's Line is it Anyway?’ Like the TV programme, Choke comedians ask the audience to get the ball rolling, and the rest is up to the team to transform the often weird and wonderful minds of the audience into entertainment.

Performing since 2008, Choke Comedy deliver a high energy hilarious show where everything is created in the spur of the moment and where the audience helps to create the numerous locations and characters that feature. Winners of the Spirit of the UnFringed Award in Limerick in 2009 Choke have gone from strength to strength. With superb musical accompaniment to enhance every scene a Choke Comedy performance is guaranteed to be different every time and fantastic entertainment for absolutely everyone. The performers include Tracy Aspel, Ann Blake, Myles Breen, Charlie Cassie,

Irish rugby star and GOAL Patron Jamie Heaslip pictured in India with GOAL this summer. Heaslip is encouraging schoolchildren and workers from all over Ireland to take part in GOAL Jersey Day on Friday, October 7th. GOAL Jersey Day invites members of the public to wear the jersey of their favourite team for the day and make a suggested donation of €2 to GOAL. All proceeds go to GOAL. To register, visit

Nenagh Eire Og Camogie Club By Séamie Morris P.R.O Sponsored by Nenagh Credit Union U 8s The u 8s played a game against Burgess last Saturday in Kilcolman. It was a very enjoyable game for all the team who are improving all the time and are making great friends. It was all the more enjoyable for them when they saw the feast provided for them by Burgess. Well done to all. We will be having our own 4 team Blitz next Saturday in MacDonagh park and we would like to encourage parents to bring food for the feast afterwards which is an important part of the day for the teams and parents. U 10s The u 10s travelled to play Shannon Rovers recently and both teams served up a feast of dedication and skill. Nenagh are improving with every game which shows their dedication to their training and ability to listen to their coaches. It is hoped that their will be one further blitz for them before the end of the season. Both the u 8s and u 10s will end the season with their annual parties.

U 15s The u 15s are due to play Toomevara in the County semi final This Saturday. Please come out in large numbers to support this team

Junior B The Junior B team gave us all a perfect antidote to the disappointing loss by the Nenagh Eire Og senior team early on Saturday evening when they put St Cronins of Roscrea away with a convincing 3-10 to 2-02 win.. Those of us that made the Trip to Toomevara after the trip from Semple Stadium did so with heavy hearts. This Junior b team lifted us all out of our gloom with what could only be called a perfect display. I have written many accolades to this team but they continue to astonish me with their dedication to their club with huge displays from a team that are not the most talented in the world but improve with every game and work as a unit and get every ounce of ability out of their bodies. The film concerns a group of eight monks who inhabit a Cistercian monastery in a remote part of Algeria. For decades the brothers have lived symbiotically with the local Muslim community, providing free medical treatment, clothing and advice. In turn, they have been invited to join the villagers religious celebrations. Tales of terrorist activity in nearby towns are regarded with dismay by both communities. Of course all the while the viewer begins to realise that it is only a matter of time before the violence reaches the door of the monastery. For Philip French in The Observer "Of Gods and Men is a profound, immaculately acted

movie. Its words are carefully considered, its images eloquent. The subject matter is urgently topical, the themes raised eternal and universal". Peter Bradshaw, writing in The Guardian gave it five out of five stars and called it a "stunningly passionate and deeply moving film by the French director Xavier Beauvois, based on the kidnapping and murder of monks in Algeria by fundamentalists in 1996". In Sight and Sound, Catherine Wheatley wrote that "Watching Of Gods and Men, one can't help but be overwhelmed by it's raw humanism" and described the film as "a small miracle of a film, offering a genuinely progressive vision of faith". The film will start at 8 pm, and remember the film club is open to all, you don't have to be a member, but there are advantages to membership. Time is Precious A man came home from work late again, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, may I ask you a question?” “Yeah, sure, what is it?” replied the man. .. “Daddy, how much money do you make an hour? “That’s none of your business! What makes you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily. “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy. “If you must know, I make €20.00 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied, head bowed. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I borrow €10.00 please?” The father was furious. “If the only reason you wanted to know how much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. I work long, hard hours everyday and don’t have time for such childish games.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even madder about the little boy’s questioning. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think he may have been a little hard on his son. Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that €10.00, and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep son?” he asked. “No daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy. “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It’s been a long day and I took my aggravation out on you. Here’s that €10.00 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, beaming. “Oh, thank you daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out some more crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at the man. “Why did you want more money if you already had some?” the father grumbled. “Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do,” the little boy replied. ~~~~“Daddy, I have €20.00 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?”~~~~

Counselling Depression

(Continued from last issue)

When a child feels abandoned because their emotional (and physical) needs are not met, this can breed a feeling of not being good enough. It also breeds a root of core shame which enters the very being of the child and entwines the very soul of the unfortunate victim. If not dealt with it can last for a lifetime. There is a link between depression, humiliation and shame. Paul Gilbert, who writes well on shame, argues that one’s vulnerability to depression arises from shame, or a build-up of defeats that activate strong feelings of inferiority. Hence, the connection between type A personality and depression. At another level, the child psychologist, Maggie Mamen suggests that there may be a connection between the spoilt child syndrome and depression. Apart from how children attach to their main caregivers, there is also much evidence that how a child learns to think when being socialised is also connected to the presence or absence of depression in later life. For example, sometimes parents use the reward and punishment approach to the child’s formation, and so some children see this as a way of interacting. Small children learn through observation. I often draw the imagery of a child being like a sponge taking in everything he sees. The child can learn how to think negatively, and sometimes they learn negative views of the self and the world from the parent’s attitudes. This may affect the child’s self-esteem and his ability to relate appropriately with others.

different to those experienced by adults. Of course, some of these symptoms may stem from other problems, so parents and teachers need to get as much information as possible about the child or adolescent showing such symptoms. Obviously parents should also be educated in the signs of depression afflicting children. Parents are in the best position to see if their child suffers from frequent vague, non-specific physical complaints such as headaches, muscle aches, stomach aches, and tiredness. All of these may indicate a depressed child. If a child has frequent absences from school or is performing poorly, these, too, may be warning signs of the presence of depression. Children who are depressed sometimes often talk about running away from school, and some may even do so. This, of course, may be for other reasons, such as bullying. Of course if the home environment is abusive or negative, this may bring on depression, and a resulting desire to get away.

Parents should also pay attention if their child is frequently irritable, angry and hostile. Irritable moods are often exhibited by depressed children, and less so in adults. Crankiness can be part of depression, but this depression may not be recognised by hard-pressed parents. In looking at depressed children irritability might be substituted for depressed mood, because, unlike adults, children may not present with depressive mood depending upon their developmental stage. Preschool children and pre-adolescents look I have a small exercise where I ask a depressed in facial expression, whereas person being counselled to draw a big ear in adolescents depressed mood is more and write into it negative messages about commonly seen. themselves that they heard as children.
