"Dad," said Little Johnny, "I'm late for football practice. Would you please do my homework for me?" The father said irately, "Son, it just wouldn't be right." "That's okay," replied Little Johnny, "but you could at least give it a try, couldn't you?"

A senior infant came home from school and said to her mother, "Mom, guess what? We learned how to make babies today."

The mother, more that a little surprised, asked fearfully, "That's interesting. How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'."

One day a group of scientists got together and decided that man had come a long way and no longer needed God. So they picked one scientist to go and tell Him that they were done with Him. The scientist walked up to God and said, "God, we've decided that we no longer need you. We're to the point that we can clone people and do many miraculous things, so why don't you just go on and get lost?" God listened very patiently and kindly to the man. After the scientist was done talking, God said, "Very well, how about this? Let's say we have a man-making contest." To which the scientist replied, "Okay, great!" But, God added, "Now, we're going to do this just like I did back in the old days with Adam." The scientist said, "Sure, no problem" and bent down and grabbed himself a handful of dirt. God looked at him and said, "No, no, no. You go get your own dirt."

father if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we'll talk about it." After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father's study where his father said, "Son, I've been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you've studied your Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut!" The young man waited a moment and replied, "You know Dad, I've been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair...." To which his father replied,"Yes, and they walked everywhere they went!"

A customer was bothering the waiter in a restaurant. First, he asked that the air conditioning be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned down cause he was too cold, and so on for about half an hour. Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, he walked back and forth and never once got angry. So finally, a second customer asked him why he didn't throw out the pest. "Oh, I really don't care or mind," said the waiter with a smile. "We don't even have an air conditioner."

Comedian David O’Doherty Tours Ireland Comedian David O’Doherty tours Ireland Autumn 2011 with a new show straight from Edinburgh Festival Fringe: David O’Doherty Is Looking Up David was the winner of the 2008 Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner and also the 2010 Irish Comedian of the Year. A message from David: “Originally this was going to be a really, really stupid show. I’ve been working on books of made up facts about animals for the last two years and writing for children and delivering lots of scientific-sounding noninformation at tour shows. But over the winter a few things happened. I realised that quite a few of my friends are really struggling in the crappy Irish recession. I got punched in the face by someone on the street for the second time in a year for no reason whatsoever. So I’ve decided to try and talk about these things. It will still be mostly really stupid jokes, and songs played on a tiny keyboard, but also some things I think are quite important. In the past year I have been touring the UK and at the Edinburgh, Montreal and Melbourne festivals and re-

cently did my first solo shows in LA and New York. I have performed with artists such as Flight of the Conchords, The Divine Comedy and The Horne Section. I am delighted to return to Ireland to present my new show.” Other biographical information uncomfortably written in the third person: David is co-author of the best-selling book 100 Facts About Pandas, and the soon to be published 100 Facts About Sharks (out 6 October 2011). This year he became the least famous person ever to have hosted the BBC quiz Nevermind The Buzzcocks. ‘A triumph’ – The Montreal Gazette ‘A national treasure’ – The Irish Times ‘Not everyone’s cup of tea’ – The Irish Times David will be performing in the Source Arts, Thurles on 22 Oct For more information call 0504 90204, www.thesourceartscentre.ie <http://www.thesourceartscentre.ie>

The county round of beef and sheep stock judging took place last Sunday on Padraig Moran's farm, "Coorevan Farm" near Borrisokane, both the North Tipperary and Offaly rounds of the competition were being contested. In the North Tipp division a strong local showing by the Aglish club led to them winning in all categories. In the Beef Stock Judging side of the competion Bertie Hough won the senior competition while Eoin Moran was first in the juniors. In the sheep judging competition Olivia McKenna was triumphant despite her ovinophobia and Liam Murphy collected junior Honours. Visiting macra members from nearby Offaly competed for the privilege of representing their county also, both counties will be sending forward representatives to the national finals to be held at the Macra na Ferime National Conference in Cork at the end of the month. The Offaly results are as follows. In the sheep category, Micahel Stevens won the senior and Michael Kenny the Junior and in the Beef judging Ray Bourke and Kate

Ryan go forward as winners also. North Tipperary Macra would like to thank Padraig Moran for the use of his farm, adjudicating and being such a wonderful host in conjunction with the local Aglish club. We would also like to thank members of both North Tipperary and Offaly Macra na Feirme for turning out to compete in this event. In upcoming events news, the date and venue for the national semi finals of impromptu debating have been decided. North Tipperary Macra will host the event in Borrisoleigh Community Hall on Saturday the 15th October at 18:30. COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

that but it certainly raises some interesting questions for discussion.

The county senior hurling championship final between Clonoulty Rossmore and Drom and Inch will take place on Sunday next, October 16 at 3.30pm at Semple Stadium. It will be preceded at 1.30pm by the Seamus Ó Riain Cup final between Knockavilla Kickhams and Moycarkey-Borris. We wish all 4 clubs well for Sunday. Between the 2 games the Kilruane MacDonaghs team which won the county senior hurling championship in 1985 will be introduced to the attendance. We also wish the referees, Pat Gibson for the senior final and Paddy Ivors for the O Riain final, and their umpires and linesmen the very best of luck on what is an important day for all of them. Both stands will be open and admission will be €15 for adults, €10 for OAPs and students (with valid id) and free for juveniles (under 16). This is a reduction of €5 per person since last year and reflects the County Board’s commitment to giving good value for money to our supporters. We are hoping for a big attendance for the final. The senior pairing is a novel one and most observers agree that it is a very close game to call. It promises to be a great occasion and with the prospects of a tight game, Semple Stadium next Sunday is the place to be for all hurling followers.

Congratulating the prize-winners at the ceremony, Rita Guinan from the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board said: “These small businesses all deserve enormous recognition and credit for their achievements in driving their enterprises forward. Small business owners demonstrate that they can successfully generate significant jobs in their local area and will form part of the solution to Ireland’s economic recovery. Indigenous industry

should be recognised and supported to create jobs at local level and the combined employment figures of the 7 enterprises here this evening total 46 which is not insignificant in the current climate”. Lyncare Systems will now go forward to represent North Tipperary at the National Enterprise Awards in November. The other four finalists were: Padraig McTiernan and Edward Steede from CT Solutions Ltd in Nenagh, Marion Murphy Cooney, a dress designer based in Newtown, George O’ Leary from Goliath Packaging Systems in Nenagh and Andrew Spillane and Paula Spillane from Savvy Kitchens in Thurles. The Runners-Up, All Security Mobile Shredding Ltd, was set up in 2004 to provide a secure shredding service to clients. The company employs seven people and is based in Ballycommon in Nenagh. Adsmart, which won the ‘Best New Business’ category was set up in 2009 and provides marketing services to clients, mainly drawn from the retail sector. Based in Nenagh town, the company employs 10 people. The finalists were judged on areas such as their business plans, their marketing strategy, finance, the use of technology and innovation in the business in addition to the entrepreneurial skills of the business owner. The two judges this year were Ned Twoomey, CEO of Limerick County Enterprise Board and Bernadette O’ Farrell of ACE Training.

Occupy Dame Street The recent protests in Dublin, based on the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest is a leaderless movement of concerned individuals. While the protestors have a range of opinions and beliefs the core pillars of the movement are as follows: "Our demand in Ireland is that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Central Bank (ECB) stay out of our affairs. We do not want their influence or control. Our demand is that the private bank debt that has been socialised and burdened upon the population of the country who had

nothing to do with it be lifted. We will not pay and let our children and grandchildren pay for this mess that private banks and bondholders have caused. It is their problem, not ours. Our demand is that the oil and gas reserves off our coast that were criminally handed away to private corporations be returned to the people. Our demand is for real, participatory democracy where the people’s interests come first, where the people decide what happens." (source: www.boomingback.org)

Templemore Lions Club Family Fun Day The Templemore Lions club held their family fun day in the town park on Sunday 25th September. Despite the inclement weather, we had a great turnout of brave contributors and participants, who were put in great form by Joe Barry and the Thomas Mc Donagh Pipe band who opened the event for us; this was duly followed by some fine examples of dancing, singing and music in the main tent from the Ceoltas Ceoltori group. It was great to see so many people getting involved in the many activities and enjoying the town park at the same time. There was huge interest in the boat rides around the lake with Captain Paul O’Carroll and boatswain Ciara Ormond, (all of which was made possible by the building skills of Aidan and Danny), we found the fastest sliothar in Templemore with the Centra Hurling skills cage, stand back Cu Chulainn as Joe Bergin is the new champion. Many thanks to Christy and the gang in the (TRYS) youth club in Templemore for their participation in the raft race and help on the day. The raft race will be ran again next year so start building now !, special thanks to Derry O’Donnell and members of Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club who entertained and informed the crowd in addition to providing a safety backup to the raft race in addition we would also like to thank the Traffic Corps of An Garda Siochana for being there on the day Thanks to Wayne Jones & Francis Ely for the pony & traps rides around the lake, as it was fabulous to make full use of the town park, and let people see it from a different perspective, and to Audrey who stepped in at short notice with her pony, which all the kids enjoyed. Without the help of the small army of volunteers, (who never once doubted Liam & Eamonn that it would stop

raining), who turned out on Sunday morning and evening to build and disassemble the entire set up, the day would not have been possible, so thank you, and it was great to see such community effort for a good cause.

Book Review

Review by Elizabeth O’Shea

Military History of the Irish Civil War: The Battle for Cork By John Borgonovo Mercier has launched two new titles in their 10book series Military History of the Irish Civil War: The Battle for Cork July-August 1922 (John Borgonovo) and The Battle for Kilmallock (John O’Callaghan). The series fills a gap in historical research on the military campaigns during the Irish Civil War and is targeted at a general reading audience instead of the professional historian. The Irish Civil War was for a long time swept under the carpet while at the same time being well recognised as the underlying cause of political divisions and allegiance. This series of books looks in depth at each of a number of key battles, detailing military strategy and players and providing context for what came next. For example, The Battle for Cork provides the context for the ambush of Michael Collins, explaining how the battle for the city led directly to the conditions that enabled the IRA to ambush Col-

lins. Borgonovo also provides the historical background for what today is almost folk memory -- the ‘Cork Republic’, which existed for six weeks during the Irish Civil War, when IRA troops seized revenue and managed food distribution. The Battle for Cork is a detailed, concise and accessible history for anyone wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the battle for Cork in particular but also how the national army managed to defeat the IRA in its southern stronghold. The Battle for Cork is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open WedThu 10.30am-5.30pm, Fri-Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Counselling Depression

(Continued from last issue)

Depressed children often tend to complain, sometimes shouting at other members of the family, and may have bouts of crying. They may also appear bored and fed up, and show no interest in meeting and playing with friends. Like depressed adults they withdraw from social interaction, worry excessively, and have anxiety problems, somatic symptoms and low self-esteem. They may also show poor communication skills. Some depressed children may show a fear of death. They may have an extreme sensitivity to rejection or failure. They may have difficulty with relationships, or suffer the break-up of a romantic relationship. They may have a chronic illness, or suffer a trauma. All of these may be a contributor to depression in children. One of the most common symptoms of depression is a reliance on alcohol or substance abuse. It is true that this may stem from other reasons, such as experimenting, or constantly being in the company of others using these. But, the plain fact is that it is easy to miss such behaviour as stemming from depression and assume they come from other sources. It is also easy to overlook depression in children because they tend to externalise it as disruptive behaviour and poor conduct, which attracts the condemnation of parents and teachers. Some of these behaviours may result in attention difficulties in school, and learning disorders. So, I would like to repeat that it is important to bear in mind that the presentation of depression in children and adolescents can differ significantly from that of adults, and will vary with the child’s age. Thus, the level of thinking (cognitive development) of the young person seems to be an important factor in the presentation of symptoms. Young children whose thinking ability is only developing are unlikely to feel hopelessness, guilt, and low selfesteem. These occur as abstract thinking develops. I have already looked at comorbidity (where another condition co-exists with depression), and this, too, is closely linked with conduct and disruptive behaviours. Research has shown, however, that patterns of comorbidity are likely to be different at different ages. Depressed children and young adolescents are more likely than depressed older adolescents to show separation anxiety, while adolescents show more generalised anxiety, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. Girls are more likely to have comorbid anxiety, and boys to have substance abuse. Although it seems that alcoholic adult females are more likely to show greater depression than alcoholic males. Maggie Mamen, in her interesting book, The pampered Child Syndrome gives a brief outline of how depression manifests itself in children. I would like to list them as a handy guide for parents and teachers (if you think you have a spoilt child you can check for how these symptoms are
