Jokes A man enters a barber shop for a shave. While the barber is foaming him up, he mentions the problems he has getting a close shave around the cheeks. "I have just the thing," says the barber taking a small wooden ball from a nearby drawer. "Just place this between your cheek and gum." The client places the ball in his mouth and the barber proceeds with the closest shave the man has ever experienced. After a few strokes the client asks in garbled speech. "And what if I swallow it?" "No problem," says the barber. "Just bring it back tomorrow like everyone else does."

A woman was shopping in an upscale pet center. "I want a dog of which I can be proud," she told the salesman. "Does that one have a good pedigree?" "Miss," declared the clerk, "if she could speak, she wouldn't talk to either one of us."

At the urging of his doctor, Bill moved to Texas. After settling in, he met a neighbor who was also an older man. "Say, is this really a healthy place?"

God could not be everywhere, so He created Grandmothers. "It sure is," the man replied. "When I first arrived here I couldn't say one word. I had hardly any hair on my head. I didn't have the strength to walk across a room and I had to be lifted out of bed." "That's wonderful!" said Bill. "How long have you been here?" "I was born here."

There is this atheist swimming in the ocean. All of the sudden he sees this shark in the water, so he starts swimming towards his boat. As he looks back he sees the shark turn and head towards him. His boat is a ways off and he starts swimming like crazy. He's scared to death, and as he turns to see the jaws of the great white beast open revealing its teeth in a horrific splendor, the atheist screams, "Oh God! Save me!" In an instant time is frozen and a bright light shines down from above. The man is motionless in the water when he hears the voice of God say, "You are an atheist. Why do you call upon me when you do not believe in me?" Aghast with confusion and knowing he can't lie the man replies, "Well, that's true I don't believe in you, but how

about the shark? Can you make the shark believe in you?" The Lord replies, "As you wish," and the light retracted back into the heavens and the man could feel the water begin to move once again. As the atheist looks back he can see the jaws of the shark start to close down on him, when all of sudden the shark stops and pulls back. Shocked, the man looks at the shark as the huge beast closes its eyes and bows its head and says, "Thank you Lord for this food for which I am about to receive..."

Win a Stove It is pretty well-know nowadays that an open fireplace and chimney is a very wasteful form of heating you home. The sustainable energy authority of Ireland (SEAI), maintains that a traditional open fire has an efficiency of between 10 and 30%. Energy efficiency is essentially ratio between the energy input i.e. your coal, wood, Oil, wind, solar radiation and the useful energy output, heat for your home & water, electricity, etc. As mentioned an open fire has an efficiency of around 20%, nowadays most solid fuel stoves have an efficiency of 65-80%, with some wood pellet boilers up to 85%. If we take a typical value of 75%, this means that you need one bucket of fuel instead of 4 buckets with an open fire. For a typical house which probably spends around €800-€1200 on solid fuel per year (eg 2 bags of coal per week September to April) with a more efficient stove a homeowner can halve their fuel cost saving them €400-600. With a typical stove costing €1000-€1500 depending on the size and modification to the flue and fireplace, a stove could be paid back within 2/3 years and then you are saving €400600/year!!!!! This is without taking into account the rising cost of fuel and energy. Having a stove instead of an open fire means that not only are you using a more efficient system but the system is more responsive so if you want hot water heated from your back boiler then a stove will be much faster than your back boiler from an open fire.

European Citizens Climate Cup (ECCC) stack effect meaning that the hot air in the room leaves the room very quickly compared to a system when the flue is closed. Aside from the financial implications of have what is a hole in your roof, you also have to take into account the health issue that a colder house might have on the occupants’ health. If you have a house when the temperature is constantly fluctuating, it can lead to the winter flu/colds and other typical ailments associated with the cold weather. Having a draught free house and a well insulated house keeps the houses temperature constant and your body temperature constant. Open fires also have a higher fire risk due to sparking etc in addition to excess dust and soot being emitted. Asthma sufferers may find their symptoms worse after spending time in dusty environments. For both stoves and an open fire, it is strongly recommended to get a carbon monoxide detector as exposure to this may cause death, a detector costs €20.

For a chance to win a high efficiency stove, including installation, enter the European Citizens climate cup (ECCC). All people who have entered the competition by the 30th of October will be eligible to win. All Stars Congratulations to Tipperary’s 4 All Stars – Paul Curran, Michael Cahill, Padraic Maher and Larry Corbett. Paul Curran won his second consecutive All-Star award at full-back joining legendary full-backs such as Pat Hartigan (Limerick), Martin O'Doherty (Cork), Leonard Enright (Limerick), Eugene Coughlan (Offaly), Conor Hayes (Galway), Noel Sheehy (Tipperary), Brian Lohan (Clare) and Diarmuid O'Sullivan (Cork) who have secured consecutive All-Star awards in the number 3 position. Interestingly, Tipperary defenders have now won the full-back All Star hurling award in 4 of the last 5 seasons (Declan Fanning 2007, Padraic Maher 2009 and Paul Curran 2010 and 2011). Noel Hickey (Kilkenny) in 2008 is the other player to win an All-Star full-back award during this period. This is also the first year that 3 players from the same Tipperary club won awards with Michael Cahill, Padraic Maher and Larry Corbett all from Thurles Sarsfields. Larry Corbett becomes the fifth Tipperary player to win awards in 3 consecutive years joining Francis Loughnane (7173), Nicky English (83-85 and 87-89), Michael Cleary (4 in a row, 90-93) and Eoin Kelly (04-06). Padraic Maher won his second award and it was Michael Cahill’s first. Tipperary have won 83 All Stars since the current awards were first introduced in 1971 – 81 hurling and 2 football (Declan Browne in 1998 and 2003). There were 7 years in which Tipperary won no hurling All Star – 1974, 76,77,81,82,95 and 98.

To celebrate the win Michael Ryan, business development manager of Ulster Bank, Thurles and Susan Madden of their Dooradoyle branch visited the club to present the cheque before the building work began in earnest. Book Review

Review by Elizabeth O’Shea

The Mixing Bowl By Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services in Harold’s Cross The hospice movement has greatly improved the quality of care given to terminally ill people and their families. Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services in Harold’s Cross has launched The Mixing Bowl, a collection of ‘recipes of family, friendship and love’. The Mixing Bowl began when Sean, an eighty-plus client of Our Lady’s Hospice, gave Dr. Sheela Perumal a recipe for apple sponge. More and more recipes appeared; in uniquely beautiful penmanship, scrawled on the back of a brown paper bag, transcribed on old newspaper, dictated to a family member to pass on. This col-

lection grew into The Mixing Bowl, a delectable collection of recipes that has a uniquely beating heart, each telling a different story, of love, of families in hardship and of friendship. Every single recipe in the spiral-bound book comes from residents and clients of Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services. Each recipe is accompanied by a reminiscence or story from or about the person who shared the recipe, making The Mixing Bowl much more than a cookery book: it is also a tapestry of the life experience, wisdom and

wit that we sometimes overlook in our elderly community. It gives a glimpse into the rich and valuable lives of the men and women cared for every day in Our Lady's Hospice. And the recipes are excellent and beautifully illustrated with colour photographs and line drawings. There are recipes for every meal, from traditional lamp hot pot to more unusual or exotic dishes such as chicken and peach bake and masoor dhal. The Mixing Bowl makes a wonderful gift for every cook, and proceeds go to support the work of Our Lady’s Hospice. The Mixing Bowl is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open Wed-Thu 10.30am-5.30pm, Fri-Sat 10am-6pm

and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Tel: 0505 42123; email, info@sheelaghnagig.com; follow us on Twitter @sheelaghnagig; or see us on Facebook. You can also purchase The Mixing Bowl directly from Our Lady’s Hospice at www.ohl.ie.

Counselling Depression

(Continued from last issue)

Let us now leave youth and move on to the elderly. While rates of depression are lower after 65 years of age than in the younger age group, it has now been shown that rates of depression increase among those older than 80 years of age. A Dutch study of the oldest old (over 85 years old) concluded that people in this age bracket were at high risk of developing depression, and that their depression is persistent. This study also showed that the loss of a partner was an important risk for the oldest of the old, and a strong predictor of depression. It is now known, too, that rates of depression among those in nursing homes is very high. It has been estimated that almost three quarters of nursing home residents in the U.K. suffer from dementia, and there is a close association between dementia and depression. A study in 2006 of 24 nursing homes in the U.K. found that dementia sufferers felt that depression and anxiety were the main determinants of their poor quality of life. Their carers felt that the quality of life of these sufferers was due to being dependant. There is a lesson to be learned here for those looking after old people in these homes. Depression strikes in the elderly person’s home also. It is thought that between 26% Complete the sudoku grid and 44% of elderly people living at home above & text the 3 num- suffer from depression, and a study of bers that appear in the depressed old people in inner city London highlighted boxes (from showed a marked improvement after the top to bottom) along with intervention of a team involving doctors, your name and address to occupational therapists, social workers 086-319 1673 (normal and a psychologist. loss, and health problems. They remark that the strongest predictor of depression appears to be health status. Other studies now link low blood pressure with depression. There is an interlinking of symptoms such as fatigue, pessimism, sadness, loss of appetite, weight loss and preoccupation with health between low blood pressure and depression. It is also true that retirement may be associated with a loss of status and bring on depression. Rani Desai argues, however, that there is little evidence that retirement is a universal risk to mental health, although it seems that men are more at risk, especially if self-identity concepts are tied to employment. In other words if a person’s self-esteem is rooted in his work, then when the work is no longer there the self-esteem takes a battering. The type of job from which the person has retired is also a factor. Leaving a high powered job may bring about feelings of loss about power and control, while retiring from an ordinary job may bring stresses related to money. Being in retirement may be a source of depression in other ways, too; for example if the female spouse continues to work the relationship dynamic changes, and, on the other hand, if she is a homemaker she may resent a depressed male partner who is grieving the loss of status, income and so on. She may also be stressed by a partner who is suffering comorbidity. Bereavement appears to have a greater effect on elderly men than women. Elderly men have a greater risk of suffering complicated (existing for a long time) bereavement after the death of a partner, and suffer from chronic depression. This depression may stem from the loss itself, or from loneliness, loss of social ties and support, and failing health.
