New Jobs Initiative For Borrisokane Entertainment At The Source Since February 2012, Borrisokane Community Forum has been working on creating jobs, cutting the cost of living, raising revenue, increasing activity and promoting Borrisokane.

Borrisokane Community College's canteen became the focus point for last Thursday's local Job Fair, a joint initiative between Borrisokane Community Forum and Borrisokane LocalSwitch Association.

Local members of the public were invited to attend an informal evening that would allow discussions to happen which would result in the creation of these much needed jobs in Borrisokane and the local area. North Tipperary LEADER Partnership, North Tipperary Enterprise Board, Shannon Development, local FAS personnel and Gurteen College were all on hand to provide further information and assistance.

9 potential new business enterprises were identified, and one person (Community Enterprise Developer) allocated to each initiative to investigate further and promote this idea. Presentations were made at the start of the meeting of these ideas and people were then invited to sit at the table of the idea that most appealed to them. An extra 10th table was made available to those who, although were interested in the 9 initiatives, had their own idea that they felt needed to be explored further.

In excess of 100 people attended on the night, with apologies and expressions of interest from several parties who were unable to be there.

Interested parties grouped together and there was a fantastic buzz in the room, with genuine motivation to get businesses up and running.

People with various levels of expertise shared knowledge, resources and contacts on the night and future meetings will be held regarding the 9 initiatives which were, namely: 1. Forestry/Woodland Co-op, 2.

Community Supported Vegetable farm, 3. Local Food Sales Co-op, 4.

Community Composting Site, 5.

Recycling Shop, 6. Tool & Car Share Co-op, 7. Asset Management Club, 8.

Energy-Saving Housing retrofits and 9. Hostel At the ideas table, other potential projects were discussed. These included:

and healthcare units in the town. The restoration of a Workhouse, that could be used as a community and youth building.

Potential tourism from sporting events, providing accommodation and itineraries for groups from America and abroad. Community home-baking potential. Office Hub. Each individual project will be researched further as to its viability and recommendations will be made.

On the basis of these recommendations, within one month, two projects will be established.

Derry O Donnell was announced as the Local Catalyst for the area and will facilitate the growth of the enterprises at the early stages of development. This will involve arrangement of training, finance, contracts, grant aid and other activities to facilitate a quick launch for these new enterprises.

This initiative has been recognised by Duncan Stewart (RTE Television presenter - 'Eco Eye' and 'About the House'). He is proposing to film these two projects shortly for his upcoming 'Eco Eye' programme, to be aired in January/February. This unique selfhelp approach to job creation can be replicated in any town or village in Ireland and Duncan Stewart will be helping us to promote this.

The people of Borrisokane are no longer prepared to take a back seat and wait for things to happen in their town. With CSO figures showing the unemployment figures in the town (for males) increasing from 9% in 2006 to 29% in 2011, something had to be done.

Gathering like minded people together on the night was a great starting point to go about addressing local problems with local solutions.

Guerilla Days in Ireland – The Tom Barry story

Lambert Puppet Theatre presents Snow White & Bosco

Admired by many, feared by the British Army, loved by the people he led. Tom Barry, legendary Commander of the famous West Cork Flying Column survived the War of Independence to tell his incredible story. Barry led a volunteer army in a hide-and-seek campaign of Guerilla warfare matching wits against an enemy of overwhelming strength and power. In his memoir he gave a gripping account of the attack. It was so vivid that it subsequently became something of a handbook for guerilla warfare, and Che Guevara reportedly carried a copy. Guerilla Days in Ireland is Tom Barry's thrilling firsthand account of the struggle for independence in County Cork, the Rebel County.

The Lambert Puppet Theatre will be entertaining audiences of all ages at The Source Arts Centre Sunday 7 October. This will be a magnificent family day out with enchanting puppets telling the magical story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The highlight for many will be the nostalgic appearance of the legendary Bosco who is still a firm favourite with younger children and will make a welcome appearance during the show.

Neil Pearson has adapted and directed this play and has remained faithful to the book. For those who haven't read the book, this is a dynamic piece of theatre. The cast and director have managed to bring a legend alive on stage, along with a whole flying column’s worth of men.

In spite of over 90% awareness that the analogue switchover is due to happen, some viewers have lingering doubts that the service will be switched off, as planned, on 24 October. There is now near universal awareness of the SAORVIEW service with most viewers now understanding what they need to do to make the switch. However, some viewers seem happy to leave taking action to the last minute, mistakenly believing that they may have more time than they actually do. Mary Curtis, Director of Digital Switchover, commented: From time to time at some of our events and roadshows we encounter people who don’t really seem convinced that the analogue service will actually be shut down on that date.

I can absolutely assure you that the analogue service will be permanently shut down at 10.00am on 24 October and any viewer who is not ready for digital by then will face a blank screen.

Close to 200,000 households across the country have already made the switch to SAORVIEW and are enjoying the benefits of the new service All you need is a SAORVIEW Approved settop-box or television connected to the aerial to begin to receive SAORVIEW.

70% of those surveyed have a strong understanding of what they need to do to switch to SAORVIEW and 78% understand that not taking action in households with aerials, will result in loss of service. Nonetheless, many seem resolved to leave making the switch until much closer to the final deadline There really are no advantages to waiting to make the switch and indeed some of the best bargains on TVs and set-top-boxes may well be gone. We know from the experience of other countries that many householders leave getting ready right to the deadline. As a result they may end up facing a stock shortage or not being able to purchase the model they had originally wanted.

While there is choice and good availability of stock, those who prepare early will likely get the best deals.

Householders with SKY or UPC will be unaffected by the digital switchover.

Most of those who have yet to make the switch are older, living in rural areas, and often in lone households. Some of these people find making technology change, however simple, offputting.

Counselling Depression

At this point I have said most of what I want to say about depression, and I hope that some of it has helped you. I would like to end this series of articles by some reference to counselling and therapy as a way of dealing with depression. The counsellor is not an expert, and must use his own experience and educate himself on human distress. I consider this an ethical matter. By understanding human distress, and in this case depression, the counsellor has a good chance of standing in the depressed persons shoes. It is not easy to counsel a depressed person. The very nature of depression is hopelessness, and when they come in desperation to be ‘fixed’, the counsellor has to find a way through the dark clouds that envelop their unfortunate clients. Una O’Farrell, in her lovely book Courage to change. The counselling Process puts this well on p.121 of that book: ‘Depression in a client can be very difficult to tolerate. We can feel helpless without pills or potions, and it is often difficult to go on believing that we have anything of value to offer in the face of hopelessness. The phrase that I use to reassure myself is ‘Trust in the process’, because theoretically I fully subscribe to the belief that listening to, accepting and staying with a client is in itself therapeutic’.

Perhaps you or your family are wondering what type of counsellor you might attend to have depression treated. I have to say to you that there are thousands of articles on this. There seems to be intense competition between different counselling types claiming success in the treatment of depression. Before you abandon this article in alarm, please be assured that I am not going to explain any of these therapies. Professor Mick Cooper in his book Essential Research Findings in counselling and Psychotherapy. The Facts are Friendly and other writers have examined every conceivable aspect of counselling and read hundreds of studies to come to their conclusions, which I will give you, and then you can make up your own mind.

Basically the following seems to be true. Despite many contrary claims there is no real difference in the effectiveness of any model of counselling in the treatment of depression. There are a number of fundamental pointers that you may find useful as you consider choosing a counsellor. First of all therapy is concerned with people, not conditions, complaints or disorders. The relationship between the depressed person and the counsellor is very

important, the training and skill of the counsellor is important, the use of particular techniques has some importance, but the most important is the willingness and optimism of the depressed person to work at healing himself as he allows the counsellor to journey with him on that painful journey. In other words the client has a greater impact than the counsellor or according to Mick Cooper the client is the best facilitator of an effective outcome.

Disappointing for counsellors, yes! Some researchers hold that a combination of therapy and antidepressants are the most effective way to heal depression, but recent research does not altogether agree with this. A further conclusion of research is that the longer the person stays in therapy the more beneficial the results.

I agree with this, but the cost can be prohibitive, unless the counsellor has a sliding scale of fees.

I also agree with those writers who stress that empathy is a really important element in counselling. This means entering into the thoughts and feeling of the depressed person and experiencing them as if they were the counsellor’s own. Empathy focuses on the person and seeks to restore power, and fits well with crisis counselling as a depressed person discloses suicidal ideation, and allows the counsellor to experience the anxiety and pain as if it were his own.
