Last December, 3,647 Christmas shoeboxes left Nenagh and were delivered to the children of Armenia. For these children this was the only Christmas present they received; a shoebox filled with warm clothing, school supplies washing accessories and toys. 2012 will be our twelvth year organizing this project in North Tipperary. In these 12 years almost 43,000 Christmas shoe boxes has been sent to needy children of all religious denominations, race and ethnic backgrounds. Our warehouse will open in the coming weeks and is located in Kenynon Street car park. All boxes have to be in by Nov 14th. All completed shoeboxes are checked prior to despatch and as always some are found to be lacking. These boxes are termed sad boxes.

This little girl was in hospital in Timisoara, Romania. She was so happy to get her shoebox and loved hugging the teddy. Her mum was with her and the little girl excitedly showed her mum each item in the shoebox. She couldn't believe her eyes when she found three pairs of pink underpants which were still on the hangar and she was so excited as she pointed her age (7) to me on the hangar! What a present!

Are you a fan of Killnasully and Fawlty Towers? Then you’ll love The House that Jack Filled. Full of clever pranks, slapstick humour and a stunning set, this show will have you keeled over with belly laughs!
Jack McNally owns a hotel with 13 rooms, all of them sunny. Originally built by his parents beside “a river as big as the sea”, it’s a cosy, poky falling-downy type of place and Jack wouldn’t have it any other way. It is his home and his livelihood. Unfortunately his loyal patrons have finally abandoned its creaking walls and Jack needs to literally reinvent himself as well as the hotel. Jack has a genius plan to fill his hotel with imaginary guests. What ensues is a laugh out loud Fawlty Towers style comedy that is an absolute howl! Louis Lovett (aka Deiter from Killinaskully) plays the eponymous hero, and all the guests, no mean feat considering the freakish tics and traits that define them. Satnav Poem I have a little Satnav, I've had it all my life, it's better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife. It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive "It's 60 miles an hour", it says "You're doing sixty five". It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake, and tells me that it's never ever, safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green, it seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene. It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear, and taking this into account,
it specifies my gear. I'm sure no other driver has, so helpful a device, for when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice. It fills me up with counselling, each journey's pretty fraught, so why don't I exchange it, and get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I'm properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things, and keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages, and my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in awhile, I could turn the darned thing off.

Putting Redwood On The Map Redwood - a tiny townland in North Tipperary, very close to the border with Co. Offaly. Not very well known? Well, this week it has been put firmly on the map! The blog A Year in Redwood (ayearinredwood.com) won the Best Lifestyle Blog at the Blog Awards Ireland ceremony in Naas on Saturday last. The blog - a diary of rural life in Tipperary, written by a city girl was started 3 years ago by Margaret O’Farrell who moved to Redwood in 2003 having spent all her life living in Limerick and Dublin. Named after the Peter Mayle book (A Year in Provence), A Year in Redwood follows a similar pattern chronicling the ordinary, everyday things that happen on and off the small-holding where Margaret and Alfie rear free-range pigs, goats, ducks, hens.... and also have 2 cats and 2 dogs. They share with readers the ups and downs of small-holding
living, the trials and tribulations of growing your own fruit and vegetables and all the other aspects of life in rural Ireland. Margaret said “there were over 1500 nominations for the Blog Awards this year (www.blogawardsireland.co m), so it was an honour to be short-listed, not to mind to be voted by independent judges as the overall winner in the Lifestyle Category. I am still over-whelmed and speechless!” When Margaret started the blog, it was family and friends that read it, now, however, the readership is now global with regular readers in places as far flung as Canada, USA and Australia. HypnoSolutions, Templemore, is delighted to announce, in association with The Weight Loss Clinics, www.weightlossclinic.ie, The Gastric Hypnotic Band System has arrived. We specialise in working ONLY with clients with a BMI over 30. If you have a smaller amount to lose we recommend the standard Weight Loss Programme. Imagine you were convinced you actually had Gastric Band surgery. Imagine your appetite was greatly reduced and that you only felt like eating healthy foods and only when you where hungry. Imagine having the benefits of Gastric Band surgery without the dangerous risks, and at a fraction of the cost, well that is what you can have through Hypnosis at HypnoSolutions. Why don’t you give yourself a fresh start by calling Miriam Dunne on 086 8384210 to arrange a consultation to see if you are a suitable candidate for the Gastric Hypnotic Band system? I can then advise you of the costs and discuss in detail the programme outline. I will explain fully the Hypnotherapy procedures to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable before we start. The programme consists of 6 sessions and if required maintenance sessions can be arranged at 12 week intervals. Along with sustained weight loss this programme achieves motivation for change and controlled eating. We remove negative habits replacing them with positive habits. We remove any interest in eating for any reason other than hunger. No-longer will you feel the need to “comforteat” because of emotions or stress.
Find us on
You will begin to enjoy and look forward to regular exercise. Your programme is tailor made for you and will address any areas of concern that you may have. Your progress will be assessed throughout the programme. The Hypnotic Gastric Band is applied through Hypnotherapy at session five. This means the barriers that were holding you back from losing, and keeping the weight off, will already have been addressed by the time the band is hypnotically applied. Unlike surgery our Gastric Hypnotic Band system is an extremely pleasant. It is very effective and has a higher success rate than actual surgery along with no risks or side effects. The last session of the programme is where we access your improvement and experience from having the Gastric Hypnotic Band fitted. We also ensure that you are eating the appropriate amount of food that your body requires. If we need to adjust the band either way then this session is used for that purpose. We also once again reinforce all the good eating habits you have established and again reinforce the art of a good healthy lifestyle. We also offer maintenance sessions so that we are with you every step of the way. These sessions can be scheduled every 12 weeks. Some people avail of these sessions but for most they do not require any further sessions. Miriam Dunne, 086 8384210, HypnoSolutions, Main Street, Templemore, Co. Tipperary. www.weightlossclinic.ie

The pavement echoed to the sound of hurrying feet and loud voices as the group rushed between pubs before last orders were called. A few meters above their heads an unseen drama was been played out as bats swooped on unsuspecting moths attracted by the fatal lure of the street lights. The night life of our towns and cities has fascinated me for years and in the quieter parts of our urban environment streets and gardens can often be alive with moths that slowly awake as we unwind after a long hard day. One of the most beautiful species is the Goldspot and it is on the wing from late June- Mid August. People have this impression of moths as been dull and drab insects but one look at the Goldspot will hopefully distill this notion. But this poses an intriguing question as to what benefit do nocturnal insects gain

from been so colourful? Perhaps it has something to do with the need to be camouflaged during the day to avoid the hungry gaze of predators or divine inspiration blended with a touch of Van Gough. It flies shortly after dusk and adults feed on a variety of flowers including Red Valerian and Buddleias. These wildflowers are very common on walls and urban habitats (usually called derelict sites but this does no justice to the wildlife they contain). I have never caught them in big numbers in the moth trap and they mainly found in damp places including, ditches, woodland rides, canals and rivers. The caterpillars feed on Sedges and Yellow Iris that are found in wet areas. Many species of birds depend on moth caterpillars to successfully rear the families. A few years ago I watched a pair of Starlings working hard to feed their large family. The nest was located in a

small hole under the gutter of a roof. About every three minuets they returned with a large juicy caterpillar that was deposited into a bottomless beak. Without this natural bounty the parents would be hard pressed to find enough food to feed their chicks. Later on as I release the moths into the night I realize that in our towns and cities we never truly experience nighttime any more as we are always close to an artificial source of light. You might wonder at the relevance of this but this modern twilight world affects moth populations as they become confused by all these lights and are easily caught by bats. By saving energy you are not only helping to save our planet you are also indirectly contributing to moth conservation. Allowing the light into the lives is a much overused cliché but for the nighttime naturalist the darkness is sometimes just as welcome.

New Local Country Sports Organisation Launched A new local country sports organisation has been launched with the aim significantly improving the representation of all country sports throughout Ireland and also offering better value for money membership for all Irish country sports men and women. Country Sports Ireland has teamed up with a leading global insurer to develop an outstanding €6.4 million public liability insurance package that provides comprehensive cover for all major country sports activities at what we believe are the CHEAPEST rates available in Ireland.
Membership of Country Sports Ireland is open to anyone resident in any part of Ireland. Philip Maher, Director Country Sports Ireland said, “Country Sports Ireland was formed in response to the persistent challenges to many aspects of indigenous country sports and the need for much greater resources and expertise focussed on addressing these challenges.” “Country Sports Ireland brings together a team of people who have enormous experience and expertise in the representation of literally
every aspect of country sports throughout Ireland for many years. I believe Country Sports Ireland can make an important contribution to the promotion and protection of all country sports at a very important time.” Further information on Country Sports Ireland and its ‘best value’ membership rates telephone Philip on 087 8399345 or visit the website www.countrysportsireland.org

Counselling Depression
(Continued from last issue)
The counsellor must be emotionally ready to hear about suicide; otherwise an important professional element may be missing. This was one of my problems when training, but an excellent course called ASSIST made me comfortable in the presence of a suicidal client. This has allowed me to ask depressed clients the pertinent question ‘do you feel suicidal’ or ‘are you thinking of committing suicide?’, and the more difficult question ‘have you any plan for committing suicide?’. Training that I did with a group of counsellors with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has also made me realise the importance of helping a person identify and build up their own resources to help withstand powerful negative forces. As we come to the end of this series of articles, I would once more like to remind those who suffer from depression that they have choices. They can make positive choices even in the midst of their pain, darkness, hopelessness, and pessimism. When my child was killed and a cloud of depression came on me, I made the choice of going back to work, of continuing to play badminton. I remember standing in the badminton hall feeling empty and miserable, but I made myself take part. It was a great effort. But, it was worth it. We always have choices. In other words however awful we feel we must assume some measure of responsibility, as we struggle on, hopefully surrounded by the assistance of others. But even without this we can prevail over this dark cloud. However, we cannot perform miracles, so we must set realistic goals, make reasonable priorities, break large tasks into smaller ones, and postpone important decisions until the depression has lifted. Seek support, confide, and try not to struggle on alone. Try and become involved in activities that you like, take exercise, go to the pictures, and join a group. Always remember that your depression will go. It will not go quickly, so be patient. You will get a little better each day. Challenge your negative thinking and replace them with positive thinking. This will take a big effort. It will not be easy. But persist. I am a historian by profession, and while I have abandoned historical research to concentrate on researching distressing conditions such as depression, I still like to read biographies. I think of Winston Churchill and of the depression that he suffered. He called it the black dog! And this reminds me that there is another way to make depression seem less of an enemy, and tends to disarm it. This way is to accept it, to see it as a friend. A friend who is telling you that all is not well; that perhaps you have lost someone, that you were abused, that you were betrayed, or whatever negative and hurtful event you experienced. I was reading recently that we should invite the black dog over, let it sniff about us, and rub its dark hide. It will then become less

threatening. This is very difficult. But try it. Talk to your depression as your friend. Have another look at my poem and see the words friend and companion in it. A friend of mine was in Australia recently at a centre for dealing with cancer and she gave me a poem that was given to her by the facilitators. This is the Guest House by the Afghan poet Jalalludin Rumi, who lived in the middle ages. Basically it says that we should welcome all our feelings and complaints as guests. I was enthusiastic about this, but she remarked that it was easy for me to say this, but that I did not have cancer. Of course. I will end this series of articles with this poem, and it may or may not help you if you are depressed. You will have to find your way of coping, and the innate instinct of the human being is to find the optimum way to care for the self. The Guest House This being human is a guesthouse. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, Some momentary awareness comes As an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, Who violently sweep your house Empty of its furniture. Still, treat each guest honourably. He may be clearing you out For some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, Meet them at the door laughing And invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, Because each has been sent As a guide from beyond.
