Exciting year of dance about to begin at Flynn O Kane Academy of Dance Important notice to all parents and children!! It's the time of year to get those feet tapping and legs kicking and Flynn O'Kane Academy of Dance is the place to be!! The Academy run by world renowned dancers and 'Lord of the Dance' stars Bernadette Flynn and Damien O'Kane is now entering into its fourth established year celebrating a fusion of Irish Dance and Performance. Bernadette and Damien are privileged to nurture their students' artistic potential and are very much dedicated to the growth and development of each student. Love and passion for dance have always been such important ingredients in the duo's aims for their Academy. This is very much reflected in their Summer Camp Showcase which continues to grow bigger and stronger each year. It truly is a celebration of dance and offers something for all children.
On the competitive circuit, Flynn O'Kane have had another fantastic year with some amazing results. Last
November the Academy racked up three Leinster and two Munster titles. They also had a podium 3rd place at the World Championships at Easter, their dancer Siobhan Phelan brought the 'World Globe' back to Tipperary. They also achieved many top ten placings at the recent Irish National Championships. Bernadette, a six time World Champ and Damien, also a World Champ know what it takes to guide and nurture a dancer to their full potential and ultimately reach the top of their game. Their aim is to offer their students the ultimate Irish Dance experience!! Flynn O' Kane Academy are very excited to welcome all new students for what promises to be another fantastic year. From Lockout to Bailout at Nenagh Arts Centre A Weekend of Conversations With Special Guest Fintan O’Toole Venue: Nenagh Arts Centre, Co. Tipperary Date: Friday 27th – Sunday 29th September The 1913 Lockout marked the beginning of a decade of change for Ireland, resulting in independence and the creation of a new state. The Lockout is widely seen as one of the seminal events in the creation of the new state. 100 years on from this most historic industrial conflict and five years on from a calamitous bank collapse, ‘From Lockout to Bailout: Sept 1913 – 2013’ will create ‘a weekend of conversations’, examining the challenges facing Ireland then and now; creating a space once again for new ideas to emerge. Historians, authors, social activists and leading commentators will gather at Nenagh Arts Centre, Nenagh, Co Tipperary in September (27 – 29) for the weekend event with special guest Fintan O’Toole.
This commemorative event will also look to the future for the Republic, asking questions about the changing political, economic and societal landscape. Other speakers throughout the weekend will include RTE’s Aine Lawlor; local award-winning author Donal Ryan, historian Catriona Crowe; Dr. Tom Collins; formerly of NUI Maynooth; Dr. Peadar Kirby, University of Limerick; Dr. Mary Murphy; NUI Maynooth; Orla Tinsley, health campaigner and Rev. Stephen Neill, Cloughjordan, as well as Mid-West Meitheal Co-operative. This event is a ‘Nenagh Risings’ initiative founded by Gerry Coffey and Kathleen O’Meara. During the summer, the committee have investigated options for our swimmers to cater for the upcoming closure of the pool when work starts on the new leisure park and upgrading of facilities. Unfortunately this has been hampered somewhat by the fact the closure date has changed a number of times but the committee will provide and update on registration night and will be available to answer questions.
We look forward to catching up with everyone and building upon the success and achievement of last season. Finally a well done to all our members for their achievements in the Leaving Cert. We wish them every success as they move forward in their chosen career paths and hope they continue their swimming. A special mention to Shane Cody who through his swimmimg has obtained a sports scholarship with UL.

North Tipp Macra na Feirme North Tipp Macra have just had an very busy few weeks. Well done to Catherine Maher who represented us at the annual Ms Macra Competition in Dundrum earlier this month and big congratulations to Joe Maher who came second in the International Bachelor of the Year competition in Ballinasloe. Last Saturday saw all the hard work of Tipperary Macra’s Relay For Life team came to fruition. A team of well over 24 members walked for 24 hours in Toomevara for the Relay For Life in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. There was a huge turnout of North Tipp and South Tipp members
as well as massive support from our very good friends at Offaly Macra. Thank you all very much especially team captains Catherine Maher and Una Ryan. There was a lot of hard work involved in getting ready for this event and the results were fantastic. Lots of fun was had at the event and all our members can be very proud of themselves. Tipp Farmers Building New Futures In 2006 a group of farmers in County Tipperary formed an organisation called New Futures. This was at a time of declining farming numbers, lower incomes and higher dependence on subsidies as well as increasing isolation. The group devised a training programme with it’s lead partner, St. Sheelan’s College, Templemore. It was in conjunction with the Leonardo project and funded by the EU. Bridget Kirwan and Sheila Hoctor of Tipperary Institute both worked closely with the group. The basic aim of the group was to help it’s members cope with the challenges of modern farming and to educate themselves with the skills to diversify. It also aimed to fulfil the social needs of it’s members. This has proved successful as members have found a place to discuss their problems and to look at the barriers they regard as obstacles and break them down. To date the group has completed a range of training programmes including Personal Development, Computer Courses specifically designed for farmers, Farm Safety and First Aid. The group meets once every month throughout the year. Almost all meetings are attended by a guest speaker. Topics covered have been varied ranging from Financial Advisors, Accountants, Personnel from MABS and from Tipperary Enterprise Board. Local Business Representatives have given an insight into setting a business or on farm enterprise. Among those who have shared their knowledge and expertise with the group are Peter Ward of Country Choice Nenagh, Michael Cantwell of Boulabane Ice Cream and Tom Starr, Nenagh who spoke on bee-keeping.

Day Trips are a big part of our activities. Places visited include Coolmore Stud, Leinster House, C&F Energy, Athenry, Lisheen Mines, Rearcross Food Project and the ECO Village and Community Farm in Cloughjordan. All trips have proven educational and sociable. A strong emphasis is placed on each members social needs. We are also aware of the needs of farmers outside the group. With this in mind we have organised a seminar “Harnessing Strengths During Challenging Times” on Tuesday 1st October 2013 in the Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh at 7 pm. The seminar will be conducted by Shane Martin a registered psychologist. This seminar will deal directly with the difficulties faced by farmers particularly as a result of the bad weather of 2012/13 and the fodder crisis which led to the ongoing financial crisis. This is an opportunity for farmers to meet fellow farmers to address their similar with an expert in a relaxed manner. Counselling Anxiety

By Jim O’Shea Self-care to prevent anxiety and burnout. Some simple exercises. Bourne also recognises the importance of adrenalin increasing anxiety levels. I will further explore adrenalin when dealing with specific types of anxiety and with panic, but at this point, I would like to draw your attention to adrenal exhaustion, which makes us vulnerable to anxiety. Adrenal exhaustion is a gradual process occurring in stages, in which the adrenal glands suffer chronic exhaustion. We commonly call this burn out. In the early stages, the adrenal glands manage to recover, but with prolonged and continued stress, they finally cave in resulting in chronic burn out. This means that they malfunction rather like a damaged thermostat of a car that fails to regulate the temperature. The malfunction results in too much or too little adrenalin being produced, resulting in uncontrolled emotional stress pressure and mood swings. Not only can this bring burn out, but it can cause fibromyalgia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and various other complaints. The symptoms of burn out, range from lethargy and exhaustion to frequent colds and breathing complaints. Other symptoms of adrenal exhaustion include irritability, dizziness, problems concentrating, difficulty in remembering things, insomnia, low blood sugar, and allergies to foods, pollens etc. It may also be a contributor to premenstrual tension. My experience is that it is possible, but very difficult, to recover from burn out. Self-care is vital to recovery. Self-care involves nurturing yourself - body, soul and spirit. Not overworking or overdoing it. The following is an inventory of simple exercises that promote mental health and peace: Physical self-care Eat regularly (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Eat healthily. Exercise. Regular medical care. Take time off when sick. Massages. Dance, swim, walk, run, play sports, sing, other physical activities. Take time to meet sexual needs. Sufficient sleep. Wear clothes you like. Vacations (long and mini). Make space for time alone without interruptions. Psychological self-care Time for self-reflection. Personal counselling. Use a journal. Read literature that is unrelated to work. Do something at which you are not expert. Work on decreasing stress in your life. Listen to your thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and feelings. Let others know different aspects of you. Use your intelligence in new ways e.g. going to art museums, sports events, theatre, etc. Be open to receiving from others. Be curious. Say no to extra responsibilities sometimes Emotional self-care Spend time with others whose company you enjoy. Stay in contact with important people in your life. Praise and affirm yourself. Find ways to increase your sense of self-esteem. Re-read favourite books and re-view favourite films. Identify comforting activities, objects, people, relationships, places, and seek them out. Allow yourself to feel your feelings and to cry. Find ways to make you laugh. Play with children Spiritual self-care Make time for reflection. Spend time with nature. Find a spiritual connection or community. Be open to inspiration. Cherish your optimism and hope. Be aware of nonmaterial aspects of life. Try at times not to be in charge or the expert. Be open to not knowing. Identify what is meaningful to you and notice its place in your life. Meditate. Pray. Sing. Spend time with children. Experience
awe. Contribute to causes in which you believe. Read inspirational literature (talks, music, etc.). SELF-NURTURING ACTIVITIES. Take a warm bath. Have breakfast in bed. Take a sauna. Get a massage. Buy yourself a rose. Take a bubble bath. Go to a pet store and play with the animals. Walk on a scenic path in a park. Visit a zoo. Have a manicure of pedicure. Stop and smell some flowers. Wake up and watch the sunrise. Watch the sunset. Relax with a good book and/or soothing music. Go rent a funny video. Play our favourite music and dance to it by yourself. Go to bed early. Take a ‘mental health day’ off from work. Fix a special dinner just for yourself and eat by candlelight. Go for a walk. Call a good friend – or several good friends. Go out to a fine restaurant just with yourself. Go to the beach. Take a scenic drive. Meditate. Buy new clothes. Browse in a book or record store for as long as you want. Buy yourself a cuddly stuffed animal and play with it. Write yourself a love letter and mail it. Ask a special person to nurture you (feed, cuddle, and /or read to you). Buy yourself something special that you can afford. Go see a good film or show. Go to the park and feed the ducks, swing on the swings and so on. Visit a museum or another interesting place. Give yourself more time than you need to accomplish whatever you are doing (let yourself dawdle). Work on your favourite puzzle or puzzle book. Go into a hot hut or Jacuzzi. Record an affirmation tape. Write out an ideal scenario concerning a goal and then visualize it. Read an inspirational book. Write a letter to an old friend. Bake or cook something special. Go window-shopping. Buy a mediation tape. Get a therapist to do a relaxation/visualisation exercise with you. Listen to a positive, motivational tape. Write a special diary about your accomplishments. Apply fragrant lotion all over your body. Exercise. Sit and hold your favourite stuffed animal. As you can see these are simple, yet they are very effective in allaying the severity of anxiety. They are only one part of the selfcare solution, however. Self-care also involves having good boundaries – being able to say no. There is nothing more debilitating than trying to please everyone. It is more than human. I regard good boundaries as one of the keys to success, and I have devoted an entire chapter to it in my book on abuse.
