Workspace availability under review in Tipperary Arising from the recent merger of North and South Tipperary and focussing on the need to create job opportunities in the county, the Local Enterprise Office in Tipperary has commenced a review of available workspace across the County. The review will determine workspace availability in the unified Tipperary and culminate in a register of vacant industrial properties which will become a valuable marketing resource and property identification solution for new and existing entrepreneurs both within and outside of Tipperary. The study will focus on all types of workspace ranging from “Hot Desks” to Technology Centres, Food Grade Workspace, Light Industrial Units right up to Advance factories. The review / audit will identify workspace in both public and private ownership and analyse the type and scale of facilities available for lease or purchase across the County. The review is being undertaken by Mr Anthony Fitzgerald based in the Business Support Unit of the Local Authority in Ballingarrane House Clonmel in conjunction with the newly established Local Enterprise Office. The review will involve contacting Auctioneers, Chambers of Commerce, the Local Authority, IDA, Airport Authority, Institute of Technology, Community owned Enterprise Centres etc to
establish what space is vacant at this time, the cost per sq. metre, length and term of tenancy available, location and quality of the site etc. Property owners are asked to contact the Local Enterprise Office (Nenagh or Clonmel) leo@tipperarycoco.ie to advise if they have space available or under construction for sale or lease. It is expected that the review will take a month to complete and the outcome of the survey will be mapped across Tipperary. An expected benefit of the study is that it will highlight deficit pockets in the County which in turn might support a business case for seeking investment in workspace in Tipperary and where demand for such space has been established. The findings or property listing will be maintained and made available to entrepreneurs both inside and outside Tipperary by the Local Enterprise Office. New competition to find Tipperary’s Best Young Entrepreneur The Taoiseach and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation launched a new competition to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur on Thursday last, with a total fund of €2million available to invest in winning businesses and entrepreneurs in every county in the country. The IBYE competition is a national competition to find Ireland’s best young entrepreneur. In Tipperary, the competition to find the county’s Best Young Entrepreneur will be run by the new Local Enterprise Office. Winners will be named in three categories – best new idea, best start-up, best new venture for established business – as well as an overall winner who will be awarded the title of “Tipperary’s Best Young Entrepreneur”. The Local Enterprise Office has been provided with a fund of €50,000 to invest in the three winning businesses, according to competition criteria, business prospects and investment needs of the winning businesses. The overall winner of Tipperary ’s Best Young Entrepreneur may receive an investment of up to €25,000. Mentoring, marketing and other supports will also be available to participating businesses at various stages throughout the competition. The competition is open to individuals aged 30 and under and will be judged under three distinct categories: best new idea best start-up business best established business with new add-on The first stage will be a county-based competition (run by the 31 LEOs) leading to the naming of the Best Young Entrepreneur in each county. This stage will include boot camps and mentoring programmes. This will be followed by re-
gional finals and ultimately national finals with one business-person being crowned Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur before the end of the year. There have been expressions of interest from television production companies on the possibility of covering the later stages of the competition in a reality TV format. This project is an integral part of the Action Plan for Jobs 2014 and is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through the Local Enterprise Offices. The photo above shows Ballagh NS children enjoying a recent county colours day. A number of children from Ballagh NS qualified for the Munster Final of Mathletes. Since February the children from Ballagh have been competing in a national competition to find Ireland's top mathletes. Matthew Cullen and Christian Cullen were crowned Munster Champions for 5th and 6th Class. Tommy Ryan qualified for the All Ireland Final to represent Ballagh and Tipperary. Since Matheletes was launched over 3000 students have competed in this competition which uses the Khan Acedemy learning and teaching maths.
Yoga in Athletic Training Yoga in Athletic Training and Sport has been adopted in a widespread manner in recent years. It is now been used by top-tier players, athletes and in some cases entire teams. The benefits of yoga are extensive and these benefits are being used as a means to career extensions and to improve performance and ultimately to reduce injuries. The benefits of yoga on running career extension and on sports performance extend out of physical advantage which are enhanced with yoga through maximising range of motion, flexibility and movement patterns. There is also a build up of functional core strength in yoga, as the slow compound movements if done correctly demand endurance out of the core and limb levers. Therese Ryan, Chartered Physiotherapist is a Qualified Yoga Teacher and has been successfully using yoga in the rehabilitation of injured players and patients in both of Premier County's Clinics (Thurles & Templemore) for many years. More recently, we have non-injured players, athletes and more sedentary individuals seeking one to one Yoga for various different personal reasons, and to date we are successfully reaching our objectives for each individual. Many sports people are also implementing Pilates exercises as an inte-
gral part of their fitness programmes. The benefits of Pilates result in improved performance, more efficient techniques, correction of abnormal strategies and reduced injury rates. How does Pilates do this? The Pilates approach zones in on correct muscle recruitment for functional movements. Each sport has key patterns of movements which must be integrated and performed correctly to achieve optimum performance. Pilates refocuses on the correct recruitment, negating muscle imbalances that have been previously created. This year 15 of our graduate students are traveling to Spain and France for three-weeks in June to gain valuable work experience in their chosen careers. Upper Limits Climbing Wall Officially Opened Simon Coveney, Minister of Agriculture, Food & the Marine, officially opened Upper Limits in Upperchurch on Thursday 1st May (along with the new Visitor Information Point and the Bog Walk). The new indoor climbing and bouldering wall is the only indoor climbing and bouldering wall in Tipperary and was the brainchild of the Upperchurch Drombane Development Association. Volunteers supervisors photographed outside Upper Limits Climbing Wall in Upperchurch. The centre is open every Wednesday and Thursday evening from 7pm to 9.30 pm and on Saturday mornings from 10am to 12.30. The centre also caters for birthday parties and celebrations outside these times. All equipment is provided and it only cost €7 per person for the 2.5hr session. No experience is necessary. By Jim O’Shea Anxiety. How to touch your inner child (contd.). Sleeplessness as a contributor to anxiety. There are several techniques for touching the inner child. One useful book to help you understand this concept is Recovery of Your Inner Child by Lucia Capachione. Lucia is an art therapist and explains very well what the inner child means. There are many exercises in the book. These are mainly written dialogues between the adult and the child. They are very simple, and I use them on myself sometimes. The adult writes in his or her dominant hand and the child replies in his or her nondominant hand, resulting in childish scribble. These can be very powerful. If the adult (inner parent) is loving, the child, perhaps for the first time, hears words such as ‘I love you. I will take care of you’. It is best to do this exercise in a counselling session, because we do not know what will arise. Another technique is to write a letter to the inner child, and the child replies. I always ask people to draw the child’s face as they see it. If the angry child emerges, allow it to express its anger, empathise with it, love it, and find out the object of the child’s anger. Edmund Bourne has a nice visualisation as a technique for touching your inner child (pages 282-283). Getting to know your inner child, talking to him or her as often as possible is very healing, especially for adults who have been abused as children. When doing these exercises it is always important to note how your body is reacting. If your stomach begins to turn, your head begins to ache, or your chest tightens, it is a sign that the exercises are not safe. In such circumstances, a counsellor’s room would be preferable to doing it on your own. One of the roles of the counsellor is to keep his client safe. Sleeplessness as a contributor to anxiety.

Sleep is the time we give our bodies to rest, and during that time we go through different stages – drowsiness, light sleep, deep sleep, dreaming (rapid eye movement REM sleep). Deep sleep comes earlier in the night and is crucial to feeling refreshed next day and to our sense of well-being. REM sleep allows us to process stuff that has not been adequately dealt with the previous day. If sleeping soundly is so vital to our sense of well being, it is no wonder that sleeplessness can cause of anxiety. It is a vi-
cious cycle, too, because anxiety itself can cause sleeplessness. Of all the wide-ranging causes of anxiety insomnia is a very widespread problem. It is reckoned that from 30% to 50% of people may suffer from it at one time or another, and about 10% of people suffer chronic (ongoing) insomnia. Insomnia is defined by the English NHS as ‘difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning, even though you have had enough opportunity to sleep’. Sufferers wake up periodically during the night, or wake up early in the morning and are unable to go back to sleep. They feel tired and irritable throughout the day. This can be damaging to relationships at home and outside. Sleep experts tell us that there are three types of insomnia – learned, chronic and primary. Learned insomnia (Psycho Physiological Insomnia –PPI) is simply insomnia that arouses our anxiety. In other words, if we sleep badly we may begin to worry about not being able to function during the day, and we may try harder to sleep at night thus making our insomnia worse. if we continue worrying about sleeping we may become over aroused about sleeping, and, for example, normal bedroom activities such as making the bed, changing the bedclothes, putting on our pyjamas, turning off the light, and so on, can trigger insomnia. In short, learned insomnia associates the bedroom with sleeplessness rather than sleep. This is real anxiety-arousing insomnia, and is a vicious circle. Chronic insomnia is ongoing insomnia, and primary insomnia is insomnia that is not caused by any physical or mental condition.
