come to Carlisle l e W Welcome to Carlisle where you have “Big City Amenities” while living in a small town. It is like having the best of both worlds. This is due in part to our great geographical location and the 65/69 bypass that is located on the edge of town. This combination of a great location and great road network allows for quick access to downtown Des Moines, the airport and many of the attractions the greater Des Moines area has to offer. Also it makes for an easy commute for those who work as far away as the western suburbs of Des Moines. Those weekend shopping trips of any kind are made easily as well. Living in a small town has many advantages. It offers safe neighborhoods for your family to live and play, an environment where the citizens have opportunities to get involved and make a difference. Also it gives you the opportunity to develop friendships that last a lifetime. At the heart of any community are the people. The Carlisle Chamber is made up of people who have built their businesses in the community. The Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce has taken the lead in partnering with merchants, city officials, and the school district in advocating for the very best for our community. Chamber outreach includes relationships with the Greater Des Moines Partnership, Warren County Economic Development Corporation and the other area chambers. There is a growing sense of working together for the good of all. Whether you are a resident of Carlisle or a visitor, we hope that you will find this directory helpful. Inside you will find information about our various businesses, events, worshipping opportunities and schools. Carlisle has much to offer. We really like our “Home Town” and think you will too. For more information, check out our website at www.carlislechamber.org or visit our Facebook page.

A Message from the Executive Director Encouraging people to do business locally is common for all Chambers of Commerce. By shopping locally we, as residents, help to ensure that the businesses we frequent will continue to offer their fine services to our community. Take a look at the business listings in this directory. The Carlisle area does have a lot of services available at our doorstep. Also at the Chamber, we strive to help our business community grow by working with the Greater Des Moines Partnership and also the Warren County Economic Development office. Businesses that have chosen to be a member of the Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce are finding out there are benefits available to help promote their services and also the great opportunity for networking exists through the Chamber. In addition to promoting our local businesses, various events are sponsored throughout the year that give our residents a ‘Home Town’ feeling along with ‘Community Pride’ Carlisle does have a lot to offer. - Ethel Lee

From ou r Mayor
On behalf of the City Council, City Staff, Chamber of Commerce and City residents, I welcome your interest in Carlisle and invite you to explore our attractions and discover our opportunities. We are proud to be part of the Greater Des Moines Metropolitan Area where we offer a small-town atmosphere with all the metro amenities nearby. Our location on the Highway 65/5 bypass, also known as the Purple Heart Highway, is 20 minutes from both downtown Des Moines and the Des Moines International Airport. Local attractions include the Summerset National Scenic Recreational Trail, the Family Aquatic Center, the Scotch Ridge Nature Park, the North Park gardens and the historic Randleman House, which has been restored to its turn of the century grandeur. Our unique geography of rivers and rolling hills provides excellent residential and commercial development opportunities. Residential choices include both traditional and conservation-based single-family subdivisions, as well as townhomes and an assisted-living facility. Our school system has been recognized for its innovative and successful programs. At approximately 2,000 students, it is large enough to offer a broad array of choices yet small enough for all students to get individual attention and opportunities to participate in activities.

We are especially proud of our business community and we encourage you to support our local businesses. We are “Carlisle, the Natural Choice”, and we want to show you why we should be your natural choice for recreation, work and raising your family. -Mayor Ruth Randleman

Carlisle is located just 7 miles southeast of Des Moines and is easily accessible by taking the 65/69 bypass that encircles the southside of Des Moines and connects to both Interstates 35 & 80. Carlisle also has easy access to the Des Moines International Airport by using this same bypass. We are just minutes away from downtown or anywhere you would want to go in the Des Moines area.
Together with businesses, organizations and individuals, the Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promote ‘Community Pride’. Carlisle is proud of its educational system where our children are taught by great teachers in a safe environment. Our trail system is improving as the City is working to connect with other communities. Our church community has a strong and vital presence, administering to many diverse faiths. We are constantly working with our City Government to encourage growth and opportunities for our downtown businesses. A Beautification Committee has been formed by the Chamber consisting of concerned residents. These volunteers spend many hours during the summer in an effort to make Carlisle a more attractive place to live, work and visit. The Carlisle Area Chamber also gets involved regionally with other Chambers in the Greater Des Moines Area. Monthly meetings are held at the Partnership, Business after Hours are once a month at various locations and our Chamber also helps hosts Legislative luncheons periodically. All this is done to achieve better networking among business leaders in the Des Moines area. Not only business owners are members of the Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce. There are several individuals, non-profit organizations and churches that have joined. If you are interested in learning more about us, please call (515) 402-1008 or visit our website at www.carlisleiachamber.org. We are also on Facebook and Twitter. Carlisle is a small town with secure neighborhoods and has the benefit of modern cultural amenities at our back door.

Mr. Russell rotates the tractors that are on display. If you would be interested in a private tour, please contact (515) 3219275. Historic Randleman House 245 Penn Street (515) 989-0210 or (515) 321-6585 The Carlisle Area Historical Society was formed in August 2007 with 22 charter members. One of the first actions was a vote to apply to the City of Carlisle for funds that were held in escrow which were designated for the establishment of an historical museum. These funds, left in trust by Ewing Lanning and Mary Adams, were combined to enable the purchase of the house at 245 Pennsylvania in Carlisle for use as a headquarters and museum. The first owners of this home were John Hix and Ellen Stumbo Randleman. Following the usual custom of historic restoration, the home was named The Randleman House. Renovations of this unique late-Victorian home have been ongoing. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the members along with the generosity of local businesses and citizens. Restoration of the first and second floors has been completed. Painting of the outside is in progress. Plans are also being made to replace the porch to it’s original design. Check out their website at: http://cahs.webs.com. You may also want to reserve this beautiful home for one of your special events or line up a private tour. Contact number is: (515) 321-6585.

n q u A o a i tic Cent e t l a s i c l r u er Eda C The Carlisle Community School District welcomed over 2,000 students in the fall of 2012. Children are educated in a grade configuration of PK-3rd grade in Carlisle Elementary School, 4-5 grade in Hartford Upper Elementary, 6-8 grade in Carlisle Middle School, and 9-12 grades at Carlisle High School. The student population continues to grow and the district has positioned itself to meet the space demands.
District patrons have supported the school in planning for growth. Both short-term and long-range planning efforts are used to build a vision for how the district will serve students now and into the future. Building college and career-ready graduates guides all of our programming. The recent completion of Destination 2016 outlines a teaching and learning framework that will guide district professional development and instructional delivery for the next five years. Student achievement is at the core of everything we do. The district attracts and retains strong teachers. Principals with outstanding educational leadership skills partner with their teaching colleagues to provide a plan for developing each child’s abilities to the fullest. Student/ teacher ratios are excellent and students receive the instruction, care, and nurturing all parents desire for their child.

We Build Our Foundations On Integrity
Last year the district was honored to have one of the high school counselors named Iowa Secondary Counselor of the Year. This year the Iowa Superintendent of the Year is from Carlisle. Recent parent surveys report strong satisfaction with the local school district. Parents believe their children are safe, well-educated, and believe tools are in place for effective and timely communication. New initiatives for improving student management efforts will soon be available and parents play a key part in building the vision for future infrastructure needs. Outside the classroom there are wonderful opportunities for extra-curricular participation. See page 22 for more information. The Carlisle School District strives to meet the expectations of patrons while building a sense of belonging for all students.
