commentary

How to use this issue ‘A

ugmented reality” doesn’t mean much to you, unless you watch TED talks or read tech blogs. So instead, I’ll use the example of “Iron Man” (the Robert Downey Jr. version also seen in “The Avengers”). You know how his helmet gives him information as he’s flying around fighting bad guys and aliens? He still sees the world in front of his face, but those extra Iron Man features are augmented reality. With our augmented reality app, The Des Moines Register LifeInAction app, we’re bringing augmented reality to By Sarah the pages of Juice. Day Owen Well, we couldn’t make everyone an Iron Man helmet in time. But we are using augmented reality in this issue to bring you more on the indicated pages (look for the LifeInAction icon). It’s using your smartphone device — if you’re like me, it’s a part of your hand already — or tablet to view what’s in front of you in a different way. It’s easy to do. Go get the free Des Moines Register LifeInAction app at the App Store or Android market. It’ll work if your device uses iOS or Android operating systems. Then, launch the app. Point your phone’s camera at one of the pages with a LifeInAction icon, or one of the ads with a LifeInAction tab. You’ll get best results if connected to Wi-Fi, or if you’re not in a building that gives your device a signal like it’s in a bomb shelter. If the tower icon is green, that’s a good sign. Then, watch the page come to life on your screen. You’ll see the model on the style page model her outfits and an ad with a car that speeds off the page. You’ll see more photos from the cover story and a video of students talking about their experiences in the Des Moines University ad. Pro tip: Double tap the screen during a video for full screen if you want to pull back from hovering over the page. If it sounds a little science fiction, it’s because we’re doing something new. And what better way to celebrate

6 Wednesday, December 12, 2012

experimentation and innovation happening right here than with a cover story that looks at some of the great experiences in the Des Moines-metro area? Download the app, give it a try and tell us what you think. You can reach me at sarahdayowen@dmJuice.com and on Twitter @SarahDayOwen. Look for more augmented reality features in the next issue of Juice.

A serger is used for sewing. It's basically an upgrade to a sewing machine that gives you higher quality clothing. It also saves a ton of time. I haven't found one yet since they are pretty pricey. Usually between $600-$1,000 for a basic model.

Q: Your kid drew you as a big green and blue banana. Did you get an explanation why? My daughter is always creating something hilarious. When she originally drew the picture, dad was the big blue banana, though when she later labeled them she scrambled everyone up. Dad ended up with a pretty feminine physique.

Go ‘home for the holidays’ Friday through Sunday: If you didn’t have time to stop by Max Wellman’s Home for the Holidays series of shows last weekend, never fear — he’s at it again this week. The popular local jazz artist will be joined by a new seven-piece band this year, and will pay tribute to the throwback cocktail culture. In addition to the regular shows (7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday), there will be additional “rowdier” shows following his performance, which Wellman will co-host with Chris Ford of Christopher the Conquered. During these shows (9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday), many different guest artists from the Des Moines music scene will drop by for short performances. Tickets are $20-$50, with $125 VIP tickets available (which include table seating for four, a bottle of Champagne and a signed CD from Wellman). Des Moines Social Club, 400 Walnut St. Go to desmoinessocialclub.org.

Cheer on your favorite team Saturday: Watch all four of Iowa’s NCAA Division I schools in the Hy-Vee Big Four Basketball Classic, a men’s college basketball doubleheader. The University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa will tip off at 1:30 p.m., and Drake University and Iowa State University will square off at about 4 p.m. These matchups won’t be repeated until 2014. Tickets are $25-$70 at dahlstickets.com. Wells Fargo Arena, 730 Third St. Go to iowaeventscenter.com. Send the events you want to attend to your calendar by using the LifeInAction app on the page

And if you still need to pick up gifts or items for a holiday party, the Downtown Winter Farmers Market is the perfect place to do it. Featuring 125 vendors, special programming and live entertainment, it’s a winter paradise of seasonal produce, locally-raised meats, eggs, holiday goods, baked goods and more. She has 14 No. 1 singles, is a five-time Grammy winner, two-time Academy of Country Music entertainer of the year, and a three-time Country Music Association top female vocalist winner. Her latest album, “Blown Away,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and is the namesake of her current tour. Hunter Hayes will open the show (read more about Hayes on this issue’s music page). 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $43.50-$63.50 at dahlstickets.com. It’s the tale of Albert and his journey serving on both sides of the war before finding himself alone and longing for his horse, Joey. Though he is not old enough to enlist, Albert embarks on a mission to find the horse and bring him home. It’s a show filled with new and imaginative staging, centered on life-sized horse puppets that bring to life galloping, breathing and charging and are strong enough for men to ride. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. through Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20-$85. Spotlight: Out Networking monthly event

Mark your calendar

Anthony Marinaro, 34, founder, answers a few questions about the organization. Q: What is Out Networking? Out Networking’s concept is simple. It’s a group of LGBT (people) and allies that gets together monthly to connect, because after all we are all in this together. The official mission is as follows: Out Networking is a social, business, and philanthropic networking organization for anyone who is lesbian, gay, transgendered, questioning or supportive.

Out Networking monthly event When: 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Where: Des Moines Social Club, 400 Walnut St. Info: facebook.com/outnetworking,

outnetworking@gmail.com

Q: Why is Out Networking important to the LGBT community and its allies? This group is a safe place for LGBT community members and allies to get together and connect without having to do it at a gay bar or online. It’s 100 percent inclusive with members in their teens to their 80s, from all different walks of life. In the past we have had people make excellent friends, find new careers, meet great vendors and supportive businesses.

Anthony Marinaro. SPECIAL TO JUICE

Q: What is this month’s event about, and what are a couple past events? Each month our members and new members

Saturday

meet to simply connect. We chat and network. The only formal part of the meeting is the introductions, where you are asked to state your name and your reason for joining the group. We keep it simple since we have so many different types of people who join us. It’s not just professional networking, you can be retired or looking for a job or in school, it doesn’t matter. Just come and meet good people.

White Christmas: It’s the holidays, and networking turns to more celebration than professional development. After your work party, head to White Christmas; A Dance Party, 10 p.m. at Americana, 1312 Locust St. DJ Eight Ten will spin vinyl and attendees will be asked to donate $10 on entry, which will go toward Variety — The Children’s Charity and the After School Arts Program (ASAP). Don’t forget to wear your winter white.

Q: Who should attend, and what should attendees bring? Anyone who is LGBT or supportive. Anyone. If they have business cards, it’s always good to bring those.

Kick like a pro

Your team is down by two, but you’re within kicking range. It all comes down on you, the kicker, to win the big game. We got Brent Tisl, 29, kicker for the Des Moines Blaze football club, to tell us how to make the field goal and get carried off the field on your teammates’ shoulders. — Joe Lawler

1: Step up to the football, then take one to three steps back (depending on how long your strides are) and two steps over to your left. If you’re left-footed, reverse that. 2: Approach the ball. Tisl said to move toward the ball in a slight arc, pushing off on your first step with the foot you’re not kicking with. Know where you’ll be kicking in advance; don’t look up at the goal posts as you’re moving forward. “As you’re moving in, keep your head

down and your eyes on the ball.” 3: Kick. Tisl stressed that you need to follow through, not stop once your foot has connected with the ball. The ball will go the direction your foot is pointed, so try to keep it aimed at the center of the goal posts as possible. Kick the ball in the “sweet spot” (the lower half of the ball) to make sure the oblong-shaped ball doesn’t go spinning off in another direction. “It’s like baseball or golf: You’ve got to keep going to get some power

into it,” Tisl said. And keep in mind that you only have a few seconds to do this. If you hesitate, the opposing team might block your attempt. C’mon, kicker, this is your time to shine.

Didn’t you always want to see Scott Siepker sing R.E.M.? See him check ‘singing in a band’ off the bucket list.

We’re nine days from the end of a Mayan calendar, so doomsday, right? Much like the other anticipated end-of-the-world predictions, there’s not a whole lot to back up this apocalypse theory. Dec. 21 marks the end of a 144,000-day cycle of the Mayan Long Count calendar. Reports from Mayan experts say this is just the calendar restarting. But you might as well start checking things off your bucket list before the next Nostradamus-predicted doomsday anyway. Here are some ideas to get you started (maybe try a few in one day, like our cover shoot guys). 16 Wednesday, December 12, 2012 K1

OTHER DOOMSDAY PREDICTIONS

Remember radio show host Harold Camping? His end of the world predictions included May 21, 2011 and in 1994. Y2K didn’t bring the end of the world, either. People have been predicting the end of the world since the 13th century and probably before, based on logic that hasn’t panned out yet. dmJuice.com

6 end-of-the-world eats If the world was ending and you only had time for one last meal, what would you eat? We asked chef George Formaro what his last burger would be. — Joe Lawler

H

is answer was beef fat-fried burgers, but you won’t find them on his menus at Zombie Burger, Centro, Django or Gateway Market. It’s a burger Formaro makes for friends and employees on rare occasions, and he walked us through how to make it. If the world really is ending, no one is going to care how many calories this thing has (a lot).

Formaro strains his beef fat after each cooking and reuses it each time he cooks with it. That results in a more flavorful burger whenever he makes one. “I love the beef on beef flavor,” Formaro said. “If the world is going to end, this could be the burger that does it.”

What you’ll need:

How to make it:

» A cast-iron skillet

1. Heat the beef fat to around 300 F in the cast iron skillet. Make sure the fat is deep enough to allow tou to submerge a burger completely.

» Beef fat (ask for suet at a butcher shop) » Hamburger (Formaro uses George’s Grind from Gateway Market) » American cheese » Red onion » Kosher salt

2. Divide the meat into ¼to 1⁄3-pound chunks and flatten them out until they’re about a 1⁄4-inch thick. They’ll look big, but they’ll shrink while cooking.

3. Formaro makes a little hole in the center of each patty to help them cook more evenly (it closes up while frying) and sprinkles kosher salt on each side of the burger for flavor. 4. Lower the patties into the fat, being careful not to splash yourself. Formaro cooks by the way the meat looks, saying “The darker the better.” It works out to about three minutes before you flip the burger to the other side. Formaro said the goal is for the meat to form a natural crust. Once it starts to float, that’s a good sign that it’s done. 5. Once the burger is done, pull it out and add the cheese. Melt it by splashing some of the beef fat up over the cheese. 6. Place on a bun and add some onion. “It doesn’t really need anything else,” Formaro said. After eating, proceed into a beef coma before the world ends.

Finish the pour by using the app.

A bottle of generic beer and a shot of the usual is no way to toast the end of the world. — Jess Knight

Stone Enjoy By 12.21.12 IPA. “It’s a beer that was brewed to be enjoyed by a certain age,” said Andy Groomes, a server at el Bait Shop. “It’s a very hoppy beer, so it’s best served fresh.” He said Stone Brewing Company produces this type of beer every couple of months, and they are meant to sell fast. This IPA, called “Enjoy By 12.21.12,” because it will be pulled from shelves on Dec. 22, is a very hoppy, fruit-forward beer with some floral notes, Groomes tells us. Cost: $15 for a Bomber bottle (22-ounces) Find it: el Bait Shop, 200 S.W. Second Ave.

2

Laphroaig 30 Year scotch. “It’s aged for 30 years, which is fantastic,” said Tim Hutchins, general manager at The Royal Mile. “But it’s also a scotch that is no longer made, and we’re lucky enough to have two bottles.” Cost: $50 a glass Find it: The Royal Mile, 210 Fourth St.

What I’m Into Iowa Energy

Next home game: 7 p.m. Dec. 28-29, against Los Angeles Where: Wells Fargo Arena, 730 Third St. Cost: $8-$20 Info: nba.com/dleague/ iowa or dahlstickets.com

Liam McMorrow, 25 Why you should know him: McMorrow, a Toronto, Canda native, is the new center for the Iowa Energy D-League basketball team. At 270 pounds and 7 feet 2 inches tall, you might expect McMorrow to be a longtime basketball player, but he didn’t pick up the game until college (he grew 7 inches after high school). The Iowa Energy’s season started earlier this month and runs through April. I’m new to town, but I’m already a regular at: Buzzard Billy’s, I’ve probably been there 10 times already. It’s an easy walk from the arena. I’ve tried all their Cajun dishes. My favorite player of all time is: Probably Tim Duncan. I’ve been watching him a lot recently, studying his footwork. It’s all about the footwork. When I heard I was coming to Des Moines, I was: Excited. I would have been excited anywhere I went, really. Just being able to play at the professional level is a dream come true. My dream NBA team would be: The Raptors would be good, so I could be at home or Miami for the weather. After a game I: Always call my mom to let my family know how the game went if they didn’t catch it. The thing I miss most about Canada is: Being able to find any kind of food you want. I love Caribbean food. I was Googling on my phone and did see that there’s a Jamaica, Iowa. Websites I check out daily include: RealGM (realgm.com) and the D-League and NBA Twitter feeds.

Use the LifeInAction app to see a video of what it looks like to dunk a basketball when you’re 7-foot-2.

My workout playlist includes: DMX, Drake, Two Chains and Meek Mill. Anything that will get the energy up. When I’m not playing, you might find me: Eating. I try to eat every opportunity I get. I’ve got to consume like crazy to maintain my weight. I Instagram almost all the meals I eat. — Joe Lawler

Maturing Western Gateway JESS KNIGHT

jessica@dmJuice.com

I

t’s quite lovely now, and within the next decade, business owners and city planners envision Western Gateway lined with landscaped roads, maturing trees, sophisticated restaurants, swanky bars and unique shopping from Fleur Drive all the way to 10th Street. Development could reach as far south as the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway expansion, blending seamlessly with a southern Market District. It could reach north to High Street, with more housing and businesses linking it to Sherman Hill. Through well-planned walkways, residents and visitors could make their way from the sculpture park to Court Avenue in minutes. Thousands of residents could turn downtown into an 18- or 24-hour city. “The most attractive and desirable urban places

See key businesses and residential developments on the map.

are the ones that have activities at least 18 hours a day,” Erin Olson-Douglas, 38, an urban designer with the city of Des Moines, said. “You only get activity 18 hours a day if you have residents, so Western Gateway needs more residents to make that happen.” With many major developments completed within the past five years (Wellmark’s headquarters, Nationwide, the Pappajohn Sculpture Park), it seems as if the Western Gateway has sprouted overnight. Now, developers are

The Crane Artists Lofts, 1440 Walnut St., in the Western Gateway opened in early December. 34 Wednesday, December 12, 2012

The Pappajohn Sculpture Park sits in the center of downtown’s Western Gateway district. ZACH BOYDEN-HOLMES/JUICE PHOTOS turning to housing.

More living space A couple of weeks ago, tenants began to move into the Crane Artist Lofts, 1440 Walnut St. The 1916 building, which used to be a toilet factory, is now a space for local painters, singers, photographers, jewelry designers and others. The building features a sound-proof music room, pottery room with a kiln, wide hallways for displaying art, and an outdoor patio with room for sculptures. The lofts will provide an affordable space for artists to live and create, and, Kirk Blunck (Crane Artist Lofts architect and previous owner of the Crane Building) hopes, they will keep the Western Gateway’s creative spark alive. He said since the lofts will inspire creativity,

they could inspire more events, retail and businesses to come to the area. There are 36 units and all but five are rented. One-bedroom units rent between $460 and $650 a month, two-bedroom units rent between $555 and $950. A block north at 1440 Locust St., construction is anticipated to begin on the 14Forty Lofts (formerly called the West End Lofts) this month. Rick Tollakson, CEO of Hubbell Realty, said the project should be completed late next spring. The historic redevelopment of the Mitchell Transmission building will create 37 one- and twobedroom apartments near the sculpture park. Initial plans called for the lofts to be owner occupied. Now, the 14Forty Lofts will be rental units, due to the demand for affordable living space

downtown. Rent will run between $875 and $1,350. Western Gateway’s rehabilitation boom (Crane Lofts, 14Forty Lofts, 10th Street Lofts, National Biscuit Company Flats, etc.) has been helped by state and federal historic preservation tax incentives, which allow developers to rehab historic buildings in the area and turn them into affordable housing units. “(Afforable living spaces) add a whole other component to Western Gateway. There are some apartments already, and this will help bring more vitality to the area,” Tollakson said. “More housing and residents means more shopping, more restaurants, more offices, more people and less missing pieces,” Olson-Douglas said. “Western Gateway

needs more housing so there is a critical mass of people living there to support commercial development,” Erik Lundy, senior city planner, said. “Jobs are there during the day, but it needs to be a 24-hour area.” Lundy said that unlike the Court Avenue district, an entertainment and nightlife district, the Western Gateway boasts many employment opportunities within its boundaries. Now housing needs to catch up.

Building businesses and things to do Frankie Farrell, 33, who opened Liars Club in the Court Avenue district in 2007 (and sold it in 2011), opened the Gas Lamp, 1501 Grand Ave., in spring 2011. He said he knew the sculpture park and business from Wellmark dmJuice.com

Future of Des Moines

des moines

ABOUT THE SERIES In the Future of Des Moines series, we’ll tackle big ideas, look at what Des Moines needs to reach the next level and the role young professionals will play in the metro’s future. We’ll report on the movements that are pushing us toward the future and examine what needs to be done to turn big ideas into reality. What do you want to see in the Future of Des Moines series? and Nationwide would mean big things for the Western Gateway. “It’s rewarding for me to go into an area of town that has potential and watch the business flow in,” he said. “This area is great because the crowd is older and more mature. They can identify what is a good establishment and what isn’t.” With the success of the Gas Lamp, Farrell is looking for a location to open another establishment. He said he’s been looking at a few possible locations on Grand Avenue or Walnut Street,

but he hasn’t made any decisions yet. One thing’s for sure: He’s staying put in the Western Gateway. “In the next year, I’ll have another establishment in the Gateway. I like what’s happening with it, and we still have a lot of room for growth.” Blunck is working on The You & Me & Co. restaurant at 1303 Walnut St. He hopes to have the interior complete for New Year’s Eve. “It’s going to be pretty interesting down there,” he said. “It fits the profile of the projects I’ve worked on in the East Village

(the Locust Tap, the Teachout Building) in that it’s a simple, historic building and we’re exposing the structure.” “Development is like arteries,” Iowa historian James Jacobson said. “The energy flows where there are things to do. Before the Western Gateway was demolished from auto lots and service companies, it was a small business incubator. It was cheap digs for emerging businesses. It’s interesting to see these new design firms and artist colonies sprout up in the area — it’s creating more arteries and therefore more energy.”

A growing place to live, shop, create Zachary Mannheimer, executive director and founder of the Des Moines Social Club and owner of Proof, 1301 Locust St., said the area already has great restaurants, bars and events. Now, he said, it needs retail. Mannheimer, 35, said he’s confident that the Crane Lofts will bring a unique energy to the Gateway and the potential for retail. With more young people populating the area, especially the creative

Americana, 1312 Locust St. JUICE FILE PHOTO types, the possibility for entrepreneurs and local support for business could sprout. “The Crane Lofts will add a ton of interest to the area,” he said. “They’ll promote support and collaboration in the area.” Mannheimer said he opened the Social Club at 1408 Locust St. in the Western Gateway (before moving to 400 Walnut St.) because he loves the area. He re-opened Proof, one of the first new restaurants in the area, because the local businesses and neighbors were supportive and loyal. He’s looking forward to the Social Club moving into the former fire station at Ninth and Mulberry streets, and being near the Gateway again.

Western connection The addition of retail shops along Grand Avenue and Locust and Walnut streets could give Sherman Hill and Ingersoll residents another reason to come to the district. Mannheimer said that link is already organically creating itself, but OlsonDouglas said it could use a little more help. “We could do a much better job of making our Grand Avenue actually grand,” she said. “The west portion has so much potential, but right now, it’s too wide to be meaningful. I think that as new development is proposed to infill those sites, we’ll ensure that the public routes are made to be quality spaces, which will

make for better links.” Mike Utley, 34, co-owner of Americana, 1312 Locust St., said quality new development is key to creating an easily accessible, usable, multipurpose downtown. More housing, restaurants, bars and retail will draw people to the Western Gateway district. Easy links to neighboring districts will allow for an easy flow of people in and out, so all of downtown benefits. “Not every neighborhood can have its own grocery store or its own wine bar, so we have to create ways for everyone to get from neighborhood to neighborhood easily, and share the amenities,” he said. As the Western Gateway grows, it could act as a connector, providing symmetry between Ingersoll Avenue, Sherman Hill and downtown, helping to eliminate the “dead spots.” “Nobody wants to go to a city where there is a big blank space between neighborhoods,” Utley said. “There should be an even, smooth flow. Otherwise, you lose that valuable connection, and people stay where they are.”

Hunter Hayes brings substance to style JOE LAWLER joe@dmJuice.com

‘T

he Justin Bieber of country” is an unfortunate label Hunter Hayes has been tagged with a few times. Let’s try to put that to rest right now. Yes, he’s young (21). Yes, he’s something of a teen heartthrob. But he also has real musical talent backing everything up: Last week he received Grammy nominations for Best New Artist, Best Country Solo Performance and Country Album. Hayes played every instrument (30 of them) on his selftitled major label debut. He also sang every vocal part, and co-wrote every song. And “Hunter Hayes” isn’t his first album, it’s his sixth. His first, “Through My Eyes,” was released when he was just 8 years old. “I think I just got tired of singing everyone else’s songs,” Hayes said during a phone interview. “I wanted to say my own thing, but I was 6 when I wrote my first song and didn’t have a lot to say. I found out it was this whole other hat I could wear. When I get tired of one thing I can switch hats and try out a new title. It makes the music stay interesting and keeps me doing it for the right reasons.” “Hunter Hayes” has already spawned a top 20 hit in “Storm Warning,” and a No. 1 with “Wanted.” Hayes has toured with Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts (who recorded Hayes’ song “Play”). He’ll be on tour with Carrie Underwood well into next year. He’ll likely headline his own tour after this round with Underwood. Hayes doesn’t come from a family of musicians. He picked up guitar, piano, drums and 36 Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Hunter Hayes. SPECIAL TO JUICE numerous other instruments on his own and is self taught on all. He hated taking lessons, but could play accordion at an age when most kids are still mastering shoelaces. He heard a world of music over the radio and wanted to be a part of it. “I’ve never been adventurous, until it comes to music,” Hayes said. “I wanted to learn at my own pace, and learn it very quickly. I wanted to play the

songs I heard on the radio, because I got tired of listening.” So when Hayes takes the stage at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night, it won’t be as some flash-in-the-pan flavor of the minute. He’s got 17 years of experience performing in front of big crowds, dating back to when he sang and played accordion with Hank Williams Jr. when he was just 4 years old. Hayes is soft-spoken when

he’s not performing, but when he takes the stage he said he’s never had fear. Even back then. “I think I was too young to know what stage fright was. For a lack of a better word, I was kind of clueless,” Hayes said. “The biggest thing at that point was I was getting to play music for tons of people. I don’t think I knew what nerves were.”

Master of ticket sales Heather Hansen, 35, is the co-founder of Midwestix. The Midwestix holiday party is 5 p.m. Thursday at the Gas Lamp, 1501 Grand Ave.

Q: How did you get into the ticketing business? We (Hansen and Kathryn Dickel) first started as Swaelu, a Web design and marketing company. At the time we were approached by Hoyt Sherman to help them develop their donation functionality and some website stuff. The executive director at the time said what they really needed was a ticketing system. We sat down with Mark Doolittle, our partner at the time, and saw there was a huge need for ticketing for smaller venues and nonprofits that Ticketmaster was not serving. We leased some ticketing software and founded Iowatix.

Q: On a local level, how has ticketing changed in that time? It’s been crazy. Ten years ago it was very easy; there was not a lot of competition. Everybody had a bad taste in their mouth with Ticketmaster, so it was easy to come in and focus on being a local company and service oriented. Over the years ticketing has spread through the Internet, and now there are thousands of options. The competition is good. It forces you to determine what your strengths are.

Mint. PHOTOS SPECIAL TO JUICE Mint will release its album “Better Man” on Feb. 5 at Wooly’s. Dana Halferty of Parlours and Katelyn Epperly both make guest appearances on the record. The band is calling it a CD release/ birthday party, because all three members of the band have birthdays on Jan. 31 or Feb. 1. … REO Speedwagon rolls into Prairie Meadows on Feb. 15. Tickets are $44-$84 and go on sale Thursday through Ticketmaster.

Best Night

The Library for Monday Night Football With Iowa beers on special, bar goers get good beer and good games on Mondays. — Erin Randolph, Special to Juice The scene: This popular Drake neighborhood bar has 21 beers on taps that emerge from a repurposed library filing cabinet behind the bar, and 68 more in bottles. It specializes in craft brews. And that’s an unexpected selection for a teeny tiny neighborhood bar with only six booths, two tables and a handful of stools . We visited on a recent Monday and all booths and tables were full by 6 p.m., with only two stools open at the bar. While it doesn’t take much to fill The University Library Cafe, it clearly has a loyal band of regulars patronizing the establishment, some of them there to watch Monday Night Football on the several flat-screen televisions. Why it’s the best night to go: There are plenty of bars that offer specials during

Monday Night Football, primarily involving run-ofthe-mill domestic beers served in metal buckets. The Library is not one of those bars. From 6 p.m. to midnight and during Monday Night Football, The Library offers $1 off Iowa beers. It gives patrons a taste of state brews like Peace Tree, Millstream, Great River, Toppling Goliath Brewing and Backpocket Brewing. I tried Peace Tree’s Blonde Fatale at a discounted $4.75, a tasty unfiltered strong Belgian ale that packed a whopping 8.5 percent alcohol by volume.

The Library Find it: 3506 University Ave. Best night to go: Monday for Monday Night Football and Iowa craft brews on special Info: 255-0433

When else to go: Tuesdays are Toppling Goliath Brewing Company nights, when patrons can enjoy $3 pints of the Iowa-based brews from 6 p.m. to midnight. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., when all drinks are 50 cents off.

Look Inside

Anatomy of a drink:

Clover Club An unexpected ingredient makes this classic cocktail sweet and frothy — Jess Knight

W

hen you want to sip a drink that takes you back in time — a time when tiny paper umbrellas didn’t exist and a party’s “jungle juice” was bathtub gin — try the Clover Club at The Continental. The cocktail was once enjoyed by a group of journalists and socialites who called themselves The Clover Club. They gathered at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia from the 1880s through the 1920s. The club was elite, and this sipper makes you feel at the top of your game. It’s a bit of a beast to prepare, if only for its multiple ingredients. The mixologists at The Continental start the drink preparation by filling a glass with ice water and

setting it aside to chill while they mix the rest. In a shaker, they pour two ounces of gin, 3⁄4-ounce of lemon juice, 1⁄2-ounce of simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water heated until the sugar is dissolved), one teaspoon of raspberry preserves and about two tablespoons of pasteurized egg whites. Those ingredients are shaken without ice until they are mixed well and fizzy. Then, a scoop of ice is added to the shaker, and the cocktail is rattled again. Then the concoction is strained into the chilled cocktail glass. The result is a barely-pink drink with a layer of foam on top. It is slightly sweet from the raspberry preserves (which create pretty red specks that float around

the glass like sprinkles), with a hint of sour from the lemon juice. The egg whites, an unexpected ingredient you wouldn’t guess is present, is tasteless but simply makes the drink smooth. It’s a drink to be enjoyed after a long work day or late at night with a date, as it conjures a certain sophistication from the gentlemen who created it.
