he nice thing about making a difference is that it usually doesn’t take much effort. When I think back to seven years ago, to the fall of 2005, when Raygun first opened with a staff consisting of only me, it blows my mind how few people shopped there. That September, only about 150 people bought items at the store (an average of five people a day). Total sales were $3,898. So if you walked in and bought just one T-shirt from me, you personally consisted of 0.4 percent of my monthly sales. If you bought three T-shirts, your stake in my month jumped up to By Mike almost 1.5 percent. Draper And if you bought 10 T-shirts, you made it into Mike Draper’s “people I will always remember hall of fame” by single-handedly accounting for 5 percent of my September sales. After taking cost of goods, rent, etc., out of those total sales, I was left with about $600. Not a lot, but enough to keep me going to the next month. From there, the trajectory of the company has been a simple one to follow. Each year, sales steadily grew. In 2007, I added employees. In 2008, I expanded the space in Des Moines. In 2009, I split Raygun and 8/7 Central. In 2010, I opened a store in Iowa City. There was no big influx of money from venture capitalists, no big breakout product. We’ve never even had a “viral” hit on a scale that would dent national charts for that kind of thing. For a business, there is no way around community support. The early days could be frustrating. So many people would come into the store, laugh at the shirts and talk to me about my story of moving back to Des Moines from Philly. They would tell me how glad they were that I was back in town, how I was exactly what the city needed, how they hoped I thrived, and then leave without buying anything. I never tried paying my landlord by

complimenting his building. Since then, it’s been easy to be appreciative of this community, of every single person who gives money to Raygun. Though Raygun is a lot bigger now (September sales this year are about 40 I never tried times 2005), it paying my is still just a landlord by collection of complimenting individual transactions — his building. support coming one person at a time. Where you spend money matters on the little scale, but it also matters on the bigger scale. Which is why I was dismayed to see that my state of Iowa sales tax checks clear through Wells Fargo Bank — a public entity with headquarters in San Francisco. Does Iowa have no banks the state can process money through? Our state has to clear checks somewhere, but it can add to the community by using an Iowa-based bank. There is a lot of big talk for supporting innovation, for growing companies in Iowa, but the state of Iowa (even the city of Des Moines) could use its clout in a meaningful way. For instance, require all sales tax payments to go through a local company like Dwolla. Not only would the state end up saving money, it would support the local economy without having to give out any economic aid. On a smaller scale, the city of Des Moines could offer a discount to all people who pay parking tickets through Dwolla. Every dollar is critical. Without those first 150 supporters, it would be hard to see how Raygun would still be around today. Without supporters now, there would be no Raygun. Our city and state need to stop just complimenting companies and start looking for ways to become monetary supporters.

The Isiserettes Drill & Drum Corp, a team of dancers and musicians ages 7 to 18, otherwise known as the band that you can’t help but dance along with during parades and events around town, has been selected to perform as part of President Barack Obama’s inaugural parade Jan. 21. The Isiserettes are one of 24 groups so far that were selected to perform from about 2,800 groups who applied.

The owners of Ames’ Main Street bar Whiskey River plan to open a new alehouse and eatery in the former location of Cory’s Irish Pub in Bondurant, 110 First St. S.E. It’s not named yet, but is expected to open in February or March. The owners, Joe and Nicki Romare, purchased and reopened the old Ames nightlife staple Whiskey River in September of 2011. Women seek to fuel health

ith January comes the inevitable resolution for personal fitness. A new fitness group is hoping to help women be knowledgeable and accountable in the new year and beyond. “Fuel is a group of women, who together seek and explore new ways to power their lives,” said co-founder Dana Brown. “Our goal is to bring Des Moines-area women from all walks of life together to explore their health in a fun and affordable way.”

Brown, 29, and Abbie Mork, 29, founded the group to bring together like-minded individuals. Fuel’s first event will be a meet-up at Lucca, where attendees will dine on a healthy lunch, participate in

a wine tasting and learn about the health benefits of wine while mingling. “I personally am always looking for ways to improve my own health and broaden my education,” said Mork, a chiropractor. “Having others

around who share the same interest in health makes it fun and helps to hold you accountable.” Mork and Brown are scheduling more meetings for February and March. Besides meet-ups, Fuel also will provide opportunities to attend workout classes, visit farmers markets and farms, learn from local professionals and participate in healthy cooking classes or demonstrations. “We have all kinds of ideas for events, but the one type of event I am most passionate about is starting regular fitness classes just for those in Fuel,” Mork

said. “It will give women an opportunity to try all kinds of different workouts and see what they enjoy.” Mork lifts weights three to five times a week during her lunch breaks, and then returns to the gym at night for cardio. Brown is a runner turned triathlete, who recently completed the Ironman Arizona. “On top of swimming, biking and running, I weight train two times a week and am always looking for new and fun activities,” Brown said. “The majority of my endurance-sports training has been done alone. Q. What new trends are you seeing this year for weddings? Wedding trends are constantly changing and many couples add their own unique touches to their ceremony and reception. Non-traditional ceremony venues are becoming more popular, and the ability to hold both the ceremony and reception in one location is often important to couples as well. Multiple table centerpieces of varying heights have also become common. We are also seeing more DIY table centerpieces, as well as favors, and many brides are finding ideas via Pinterest. When it comes to fashion for the bridal party many bridesmaids are now wearing different dress styles, but staying with the main colors of the wedding. With each wedding season new trends are emerging and it is always exciting to see what will be next.

Q. What would be a good New Year’s resolution for Des Moines in 2013?

The percent of Iowa still under “severe” or “extreme” drought. The snow we all shoveled out from before Christmas helped some — the “severe drought” category was lowered to 58.4 percent from 69.1 percent and the “extreme drought” status which covered 41.8 percent of Iowa a week ago now covers 32.1 percent.

Over the last few months, Des Moines has seen a surge of breweries joining area mainstays like Court Avenue and Raccoon River. Exile Brewing Co. and Confluence Brewing Company, both in Des Moines, and Number 7 Brewing Company in Ankeny have started pouring beers from their taps, and more are on the way. “It’s a great time to be in the business,” said Keenan Ludeman, 31, president of the Iowa Brewers Union, a collection of homebrewers and beer enthusiasts. “A lot of people’s palates are becoming better trained toward beers, and breweries have had to step up their game.” More craft, micro and nano breweries are coming to central Iowa in 2013, including New American Brewing Co. in Ankeny and 515 Brewing in Clive. It’s going to be a drinker’s market when it comes to beer.

One day you’re walking down the street, only to discover a new restaurant. Days later you walk the same route and it’s gone. It’s not the result of a poor economy, but rather the new dining trend of short-lived pop-up restaurants. Next week, one such endeavor is popping up at Hoyt Sherman Place for three days in the form of Bubba — and as of last Thursday, the reservations were 140 (for Jan. 10), 180 (for Jan. 11) and 200 (for Jan. 12). Bubba is the latest innovation from Orchestrate Management, the team behind Centro, Django, Zombie Burger and other dining hotspots. Orchestrate’s restaurants are loaded with fine chefs working under George Formaro, and the company plans to use quarterly pop-up restaurants to let those men and women stretch their culinary creativity. “It’s a way to show support for the next generation of culinary leaders and let them show off their

skills in a different way than what they do in their home restaurant every night,” said Chris Diebel, 32, who conceived of the Southernthemed Bubba with chef Scott Straud. With Bubba, Diebel and Straud hope they’re launching a idea that

could become a permanent restaurant one day, but pop-up restaurants can also offer off-the-wall menus that might not be viable in the long run. Diebel hopes other local chefs run with the idea. “I’m excited to see others adopt this idea in 2013. I think foodies of Des Moines would absolutely love if this is a trend that takes off.”

When Sam Summers and his company First Fleet Concerts booked shows for other music venues in town, he did so knowing those ticket sales were his only shot of making the show profitable. Now that he owns his own venue, Wooly’s in the East Village, Summers can finally afford to take more risks with the bands he’s bringing to town. “Now I’m able to bring in bands like Clutch and Sleigh Bells that cost more than I could make on just the concert itself, and have the bar backing it up,” Summers said. “I’m definitely able to do more shows I couldn’t have done in the past.” Since opening in March, Wooly’s has watched two shows by Stone Sour sell out in minutes, and gave Summers a rain location for many of the Nitefall on the River shows he books. Wooly’s has featured shows by everyone from locals like The Envy Corps to music legends like Leon Russell. Looking to 2013, Summers wants to broaden Wooly’s scope a bit. “I really want to do more country,” Summer said. “I want to broaden things out a bit. I don’t want to be known as that indie venue or rock club or country bar. I want it to be a venue that anybody can come in and do what they want to do.”

Ten years ago your options for buying tickets in Des Moines were pretty much Ticketmaster and scalpers. In 2013 there are a wealth of options, including Tikly, Midwestix and Red Truck Tickets. Midwestix is moving toward more social media integration in 2013. The ticketing agency recently debuted Facebook purchasing, so that fans can buy tickets on a band’s or venue’s Facebook page, as well as a social rewards function. If a buyer shares the purchase to select events on Facebook or Twitter, he or she will get a discount on pricing. “It helps the client get

their event out there in a little bit of a different way, reaching out to people who might not be familiar with their event,” said Midwestix co-founder Kathryn Dickel. “And the buyer is getting a little bit of a kickback by participating in grassroots marketing.” Tikly is the upstart of the ticketing agencies, starting last year with the promise of low fees ($1 added to tickets less than $10, 10 percent for tickets $10-$75, or $7.50 for tickets more than that) and ease of use. 5 THE IOWA MUSIC STORE Local bands all have Facebook pages and sometimes even websites, but Web stores for local bands are few and far between. But since September, Iowa bands can sell their music and merchandise through The Iowa Music Store. More than 60 bands are now selling merch and music through the site, iowamusicstore.com. The idea came from the founders of Maximum Ames Records and the Maximum Ames Music Festival. They love putting out music by Iowa musicians, but it’s not financially feasible for them to release everyone’s records. “It’s not like we’re curating; the only thing a band needs is an Iowa connection,” said Maximum Ames

co-founder Chris Ford. “The only thing they need is an Iowa connection. Anybody can email us and get on the site.” The store features everyone from defunct bands like Slaughterhouse 6 to nationally known acts like William Elliott Whitmore. Buyers can purchase merchandise from all their favorite artists and save money by having them shipped from the same store, or have their purchases delivered by bike messengers in certain areas. In 2013, The Iowa Music Store will have a pop-up store at the Mission Creek Festival on April 2-7 in Iowa City. Ford would like to see the store get to the point where it can be doing pop-up stores once a month around the state.

6 DES MOINES SOCIAL CLUB It seems like every week the Des Moines Social Club announces a new donation to fund its purchase of the old firehouse at 900 Mulberry St. in downtown Des Moines — $100,000 from the Ruan Family Foundation and Bankers Trust, $300,000 from Principal Financial Group, $350,000 from Kum & Go, $500,000 from the Kruidenier Charitable Foundation. In 2013, expect those donations to continue to come in. The Social Club’s goal is to raise $3.5 million to purchase the building from the city and convert it into a premiere arts institution. The group hopes to officially purchase the building at the end of February. “We’re hoping that by the end of 2013 the building will be mostly constructed 20 Wednesday, January 2, 2013

and ready,” said DMSC founder Zachary Mannheimer, 36. He said the organization is well ahead of its 2012 goals. Mannheimer hopes the 2013 The Bash, the Social Club’s New Year’s Eve party, will be the first big event in the firehouse. The public can get a look at the firehouse prior to construction at the annual dinner and fundraiser planned for March. Mannheimer and the board of the DMSC are also looking for ideas from the community as they plan programs for the firehouse. “This is designed to be a community building, so we want to be sure we’re fulfilling exactly what the community wants.”

What the Social Club’s firehouse location could look like: First floor: Taxable, for-profit businesses including a concept restaurant by Orchestrate Hospitality, retail space for small and new business owners, and a coffee shop. It also would include a large lobby with a donor recognition wall, artist space and memorial to firemen and women. Second floor: Classrooms for educational programming, including ASAP (After School Arts Program, for at-risk third- through fifth-grade students), a dance studio, an art gallery and administration offices for various nonprofits (the Des Moines Music Coalition, Des Moines Metro Opera, Ballet Des Moines, Grand View University, the Civic Music Association, Repertory Theater of Iowa and CultureAll have submitted letters of intent to use the space with the DMSC’s proposal to the city). Back building (the garage where the fire trucks were stored): A theater with dressing rooms, a lobby area and a dive bar. A scene shop for artists to use, a community garden and an outdoor performance area between the two buildings. The Social Club also is planning for a dynamic art concept for the alley.

Sometimes being surrounded by other creative types is the best motivator for innovation. That’s the idea behind the recently opened Area515, a maker space at 1350 E. Washington Ave. Around 20 people use the space to work on IT, robotics, electronics and more. Tools at the space for members to use include table saws, welders and 3-D printers. “It’s pretty heavily IT oriented, with a lot of programmers who sit at computers all day,” said co-founder Joel Schreiber. “A lot of us never have the space or equipment to work on more out there stuff.” Interacting with other creative types and sharing resources and equipment lets the makers branch out, try new things and get inspired. Area515 is planning more classes and workshops for the public in 2013, as well as more collaboration with the artistic community.

8 WEST GLEN

West Glen Town Center has had its ups and downs, most recently downs with retail shops struggling since the recession hit a few years back. Last spring, the Omaha-based Silverman family purchased West Glen and has been turning it into the retail, dining and residential destination it was designed to be. West Glen has more than 90 percent of its residential units occupied, while retail is up to 70 percent, according to a Des Moines Register report. Last year Rebekah Risbeck put a second Mint L.A. location into West Glen, and Gina Pagano-Rude added her second Worn location. Abelardo’s and Power Life Yoga are among the other new occupants. West Glen will see more than $1 million in infrastructure updates once work is completed.

RAW’s five events in 2012 put a spotlight on musicians, artists, and hair and makeup experts. But as the local chapter of the RAW organization grows, it needs more space. The 2013 season will expand to include 40-45 artists per event, and the six events in 2013 will be every other month. “The response from all of the artistic communities last year was very good. However, I expect this year to be even better,” said local director Chelcee Cheers. “Recently I have received a lot of interest from the hair and makeup communities. I think, especially with hair and makeup, artists are often times expected to stay within certain parameters when it comes to their artwork. There isn’t a lot of opportunity for them to show off avant-garde styles or get really creative with cuts, colors. “RAW offers a chance to be able to do that, to collaborate with other artists, and to show that work to a large, receptive crowd.”

Punk to the core

You probably don’t know The Queers like you know The Misfits or The Ramones. And the band is fine with that. JOE LAWLER joe@dmJuice.com

he Queers is the kind of band that could be playing in a larger venue than the Gas Lamp. They could take a slot on the Vans Warped Tour, or try to get their shirts into every mall like The Misfits and The Ramones. But despite the merchandising push from the generation of punk bands before and after, the band doesn’t have any interest in selling out. “For lots of kids today, the Ramones are like a clothing line,” said Queers frontman Joe King, who performs under the name Joe Queer. “And I’d feel like too much of a whore if we went on Warped. I got into punk to be against that kind of s***.” King started The Queers in 1981 out of boredom. He and some friends graduated from high school and would sit around listening to The Ramones, watching “Family Feud” and going to punk shows. They were all musicians, and eventually formed the band. The Queers gained fans around New England and started picking up a larger following in the 1990s as the band began to tour the country. Its 1993 album, “Love Songs for the Retarded,” brought the band a larger audience, but not exactly mainstream success. After all, it was an album called “Love Songs for the Retarded” by a band called The Queers containing songs dmJuice.com

like “F*** the World” and “I Can’t Stop Farting.” Alt-rock stations were not rushing to play those songs between “All Apologies” and “Jeremy.” The Queers have won their fans through word-of-mouth and regular touring, not radio singles. The band performs at clubs the size of the Gas Lamp, and sells out often. They could go bigger (and occasionally do), but King likes more intimate shows. “We always grew up on those small places, and it’s what I like. It’s where I feel comfortable,” King said. “When we play bigger places I’m thinking too much about not (screwing) up and putting on a show. “I don’t like that much. The energy is better in sweaty little clubs where we can feed off the energy of the crowd.” The Queers are currently in the process of re-recording their late ’90s albums “Beyond the Valley …” and “Punk Rock Confidential.” Then the band will begin work on a new album, which King expects to be out by the summer. The Queers’ style has been described as a fusion of The Ramones’ punk sound with The Beach Boys’ harmonies. King sees the connection, and said The Ramones’ sound was just an extension of what The Beach Boys started. He also sees connections between acts like the pop group The Monkees and punk rocker GG Allin. “That’s the stuff we grew up

Yeah, that’s kind of my deal. I like to record pretty much everything. We record it all so we can remember it later. I like to capture the sound as I wrote the song, and sometimes that comes across. Recording everything gives us something to give the public and serves our own needs, so there’s a dual purpose.

Q: Any big changes on the new record? We added a bassist, Parker Waddell, and since there are three of us and we all do solo projects, we’re trying to break the monotony of the music being all guitar, drum and bass. We have interludes between each song with us doing our own thing before bringing it back to guitar, drum and bass. Everyone gets to be in the spotlight for a second before we break back in together.

horty’s, located in the basement of the restaurant Sbrocco at 208 Court Ave., has been a fixture for years, but the bar has suffered from something of an identity crisis. It opened in 2008 as a kind of High Life Lounge Jr. Then floods wiped it out. Then the space was reduced for Sbrocco seating, before spending some time as a wine bar. Then it was an Irish bar. Now it’s back as Shorty’s Somewhat Fancy Bar, and hopefully the new style will stick. The bar is a nod to working-class neighborhood bars of Milwaukee, where you can get a cheap meal and an even cheaper beer. The most expensive

thing on the menu is $6.99, and you get a goblet of Schlitz for just $1.40. The menu includes an hors d’oeuvres section with deep-fried cheese curds and deep-fried pickle spears, soft pretzels and boneless wings. The sandwich section offers pastrami, a burger, hot turkey, hot ham and Shorty’s Shummer Shausage Shandwich. If you’re looking for an entree, there’s chicken and country dumplings, Frito pie, beer-battered fish and fancy Italian meatloaf. Want healthy or meatfree? They’ll probably let you order something from Sbrocco upstairs. For my lunch, I ordered the Italian sausage with Swiss cheese and peppers, a deal at $3.99. It had some nice heat to it, but didn’t

The scene: We went on a recent Thursday night, close to 6 p.m. At many places this would be pushing the happiest hours. But at Alba we had some time to settle in and peruse the menu before making a decision — its happy hour doesn’t end until 6:30 p.m. Alba is known for its inventive menu, but its atmosphere is sophisticated as well. This is a place you can go in work clothes or on a dressy date and not feel overdressed. The bar area is separated from the dining area, and has a modern feel. A curved bar snakes through the room, allowing ample seating and space for mingling. A few high-top tables, for two or four people each, dot the rectangular space. The concrete floor is warmed by a red-painted wall and candles. What we got: The happy hour specials include a $5 martini list and half-price starters. I landed on the East Village martini, made of Pearl vodka, olive juice and spiced goat cheese-stuffed olives. As someone who orders my martini dirty with no vermouth, this one was exactly how I like it. I’d heard word that Alba’s stuffed olives were incredible, so I had high expectations for the two speared in my martini glass. It wasn’t an exaggeration — the olives are so delicious I got downright greedy and refused to share a tiny taste with either of my happy hour companions. It tastes like a fruity version of another Kentucky favorite, the mint julep. I also got the white bean giardiera bruschetta, usually $9, but at half price for happy hour it’s a steal. Four perfectly prepared pieces of bread were topped with beans, arugula, carrots, cauliflower and parsley. A fresh and delicious taste and texture, but the beans were tricky to keep in place. These were easily shareable with small decorative plates delivered to our table. My happy hour companions split the Ubben Farms lamb empana-

das, usually $10, but $5 at happy hour. Two pastry-like pieces filled with shredded lamb received high praise from both. The taste and texture of the pastry shell doesn’t take a back seat to the delicious meat. They were gobbled quickly. Other specials: Half-price bottles of wine on Wednesday nights — the bar has an impressive list that’s also written on the wall. Worth leaving work early for: The starters and martinis are delicious, and well worth the full price. But with the $5 martini list and half-price appetizers deal, it’s worth taking advantage of the whole hour and a half.

1. Bombay Bicycle Club, 8410 Hickman Road, Clive Downtown Farmers Market fans rejoiced when popular purveyor Tacopocalypse moved into the kitchen space at Bombay Bicycle Club. It made the popular tacos available practically daily, and those too hungover to make it to the popular Saturday morning market soon understood what the fuss was all about. Chef Sam Auen has elevated the taco from a meat-and-cheese affair to a gourmet, handmade and locally sourced meat-and-cheese affair, though let’s not forget his friendliness to vegetarians and vegans as well. Having a kitchen to perform his culinary magic in has allowed Auen to expand his menu to include nachos, quesadillas, soups, burrito specials and a little something he calls a bacon parfait. Yes, please.

2. The Keg Stand, 3530 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines There aren’t many bar menus in Des Moines that boast calamari. In fact, we can think of just one, and it fries the strips of calamari in cereal batter. The Keg Stand is home to Bach Catering, which offers an extensive menu of both expected (pizza, wings) and unexpected (gyros, spinach dip, wings in a wrap) bar food offerings that exceed bar quality expectations. Even the lunch menu strives to elevate the everyday deli sandwich by introducing interesting ingredients like pineapple, sweet chili sauce and apples. Francie’s consistently qualifies as a contender for the city’s best chicken wings, offering a full pound of them per order, but the regulars also rave about the items featuring Francie’s queso, including a rarebit burger as well as cheese fries. Arrive early or expect to wait for a table during lunch and dinner hours. Francie’s is no longer a best-kept secret.

Duties include but not limited to: repair grounds, fences, blacktop, and parking lots; install and maintain fences, playground equipment and signs; rock and grade parking lots and drives; haul trash; mow grass; snow removal; trim and remove trees and plants; cement work; weld furniture for other crafts; operate heavy equipment; fertilize and seed athletic fields; lay sod; move furniture; and assists other building trades in the completion of projects.
