very new year brings with it such possibility and hope that it will be the best year yet. New adventures and lessons to learn. New risks to take. This month, for example, I am writing this column from my hotel in London, England, before I head out to see the Tate Modern and the Victoria and Albert Museum. This, I must say, is a new experience for me. My husband and I decided to start the year by doing something we had always wanted to do: take a tour of Europe together. When we return from our trip, I have another new adventure waiting for me. I have become a business owner. Each month I try to write about something inspiring, something that will make people read it and want to take action. If I even start a discussion then I have succeeded. By Liz After all of those Lidgett months of trying to inspire, I have become inspired myself. Becoming an art adviser has been a goal over the last few years and becoming a business owner is always something I wanted to do, after watching my entrepreneur parents. As an art adviser, I will help corporations and individuals take care of their art collections. This means that I can help them research and buy new works, divest works that no longer work for them, facilitate restoration of works that need some love and care, and curate their collections. It is a step that I am thrilled to be taking. The thing about going to Europe, or starting a business, or even getting married and having babies (so I have heard on the baby part) is that there is never a perfect time. I have learned over the last year that although there won’t be a perfect time, you can decide when it’s the right time. There probably won’t be an amazing time to quit your good job, a time when you feel like you have enough money. I, for one, am still terrified by all the instability and uncertainty of starting a
business, but the excitement outweighs the nerves by far. It’s just that one day you wake up and you feel that somehow now is the time. After that there is a series of “oh, this is happening” moments (both good and bad). The very first time that you set up a meeting to talk about your new idea — will your potential clients think it’s a great idea or the worst thing they have ever heard? As I was telling people that I was leaving my job to start a business, I received a lot of different reactions but one has stuck with me. I was speaking with a colleague over the phone and she said to me, “I think it’s great. Lots of people have good ideas and never do anything about them.” I refuse to be one of those people who doesn’t do anything about a great idea, and I hope you will be, too. Imagine if everyone with a great idea did something about it. Imagine what could be accomplished and how wonderful this city would look? And for now, cheerio from London. Happy new year, Des Moines.

4 things on our radar 1. Bombay Bicycle Club becomes The Point
Bombay Bicycle Club, 8410 Hickman Road in Clive, has been undergoing remodeling and will reopen as The Point on Friday.
The club got new owners in October. That group has been making slight changes ever since. Co-owner Chris Ranallo said the goal is for The Point to be an everyman’s bar, with a lounge feel and to make better use of the all-season patio. “The BBC is kind of a chill place, but we’re going a little more loungy,” Ranallo said. “We’re going to focus on being a place to come in and hang out, and (we’re) doing some themed nights like a singer-songwriter Monday, wine Wednesday and a steak night. We’ve also built bags boards and tippy cup and beer pong tables for the patio, where people can play all year.” And don’t worry, Tacopocalypse fans, The Point will still be serving tacos by Sam Auen. Before Ranallo’s crew took over, Bombay Bicycle Club focused more on touring acts, with punk and harder bands playing regularly. Ranallo said The Point will focus more on local musicians.
2. Civic Center getting a new name
Did you know the Civic Center runs the Temple for Performing Arts? We did, but we also get a lot of press releases. To help clarify matters with the general public, the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines is rebranding itself as Des Moines Performing Arts. The DMPA umbrella organization will oversee the Civic Center venue, the Temple, Nollen Plaza and Stoner Theater. “We felt it was really important to have a name that encompasses everything we do,” board chairwoman Mary Stier said. 3. More bacon in Des Moines
If you can’t wait for Baconfest next month, The Destination America TV network will feature four local restaurants on “United States of Food” on Jan. 27. Appropriately enough, they’re featured in a segment called “United States of Bacon.” Chef Todd Fisher filmed bits at Jethro’s BBQ ‘n Jambalaya in Waukee, Zombie Burger, The Iowa Machine Shed (chef Tim Laielli is pictured with a past dish that includes smoked bacon gravy) and Kelly’s Little Nipper, focusing on pork and bacon-themed dishes at the restaurants. Destination America is affiliated with Discovery Channel, and airs on channel 286 for DirecTV customers.

The Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary (formerly Great Ape Trust), will reopen its campus to visitors in the coming months, director Julie Gilmore said. Half-day and full-day visits will be offered, along with school and group visits, and the facility will be rented out for functions. Sadly, you won’t be able to dress up the bonobos in tuxes and have them be ushers at what would have been the coolest wedding of all time. Costs have not been disclosed. sually sub-30 temperatures and ice-encrusted roads mean hanging up your bike helmet and waiting out the winter freeze. But if you’re already sick of scraping off your windshield, cycling is still an option — even in the face of Snowpocalypse-like conditions — with some extra preparation. To avoid turning into a rolling, fleshy Popsicle, try these cold weatherapproved biking tips from Carl Voss, chairman of the Des Moines Bike Collective. After planning a safer commute, join the Collective for Winter Bike to Work Day on Feb. 1.
Rethink your tires “Icy roads are the worst, it doesn’t matter if you’re in a car or on a bike,” Voss says. To avoid slipping and sliding through an intersection, he suggests investing in studded tires, which will help your bike get more traction on slushy streets. “If you can only afford to buy one studded tire, put it on the front of your bike. That’s where you need the steering ability to stay upright.” Also, make sure you keep the tire pressure a little lower than usual. It sounds counter intuitive, but slightly deflated tires will help you maintain balance in slippery circumstances.
Mind the brakes Watery conditions tend to mess with your bike’s brake system, and that’s definitely not something you want to lose your handle on. “On a multispeed bike, especially in wet or new snow, that slushy stuff on the road can fly up and ice up your brakes,” Voss says. Instead of skidding along like Bambi on ice, just waiting for the back bumper of a minivan to stop you, pause regularly to knock the gunk off of your bike. As usual, stay alert and dmJuice.com

allow for some extra time to stop — waterlogged brakes are a recipe for disaster. “Anytime you’re in rain, your brakes respond slower,” Voss says. “That holds true in the winter, too. Transitioning from inside to outside, even though you’re not in the rain, you’re forming moisture because of the temperature change.”
Eliminate grime Just like slush can stick to your brakes, other winter hazards can ruin your bike’s components. “The same salts that they put on the street that are ideal for melting ice are pretty brutal on bikes,” Voss says. Actively work to dispose of muck buildup. “It’s a good idea to wipe your bike down after you’ve been out on the street,” Voss says. “Spray it with a kitchen sprayer with some water and wipe it down with a cotton cloth.” If you don’t have a good place to clean up, the Des Moines Bike Collective has a bike bath. Second, consider investing in fenders, “They will help you stop all the crap from spraying up on your bike,” Voss
says. Finally, try switching to a wet bike lubricant during the snowy months; Voss says it will shield your chain better.

Ride in layers Forgoing frostbite should be a priority, so remember to bundle up for your ride. “You don’t have to go out and buy clothing that’s bicycle specific,” Voss says. “You can use clothing that you already wear during the winter.” He suggests a lighter layer beneath a warm wool sweater, topped off with a windbreaker. Keep in mind that you are your own heater, so start cold. “If you snug up and you’re really, really warm by the time you leave the house, you’re going to be dripping wet by the time you get to your destination.” And don’t forget to wear bright colors. What I’m Into
Colin Whittie, 24
Why you should know him: Whittie has been the certified athletic trainer for the Des Moines Buccaneers hockey team the last two seasons, working to prevent injuries as well as treating them. Whittie hadn’t had much exposure to hockey before working with the team, but now he’s at every game, assisting players when injuries occur (it is hockey). The thing that made me want to be an athletic trainer was: I love sports and wanted sports to be involved in my life. Since I wasn't an all-star athlete, I decided I want to help get these athletes back to playing the sport they love. My workout playlist includes: Music from everywhere: The Black Keys, LCD Soundsystem, Kid Cudi, David Guetta, and many more — anything with an energetic beat. My favorite sports are: Football, soccer, basketball and hockey, of course. On a Saturday night I like to: Go out with friends around downtown or West Glen. A useful website I check often is: NATA.org, the National Athletic Training Association website. There are always new studies being done and position statements being updated. I like to stay on the forefront of all the new sports medicine information. _______ is my favorite place to go out to eat: El Aguila Real. Extremely delicious and cheap. I can’t make it through a day without: Watching “Jeopardy!” The guys at the rink are very aware that I love that show. _______ is an unhealthy food I find tough to pass up: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. This is a bad time of year for that too. In the new year I hope to: Travel more in my free time and see a couple of USA World Cup Qualifiers in the summer. – Joe Lawler

What I do: I’m the weekend news director at KCCI (Fridays and Saturdays at 6 and 10 p.m.), and I do graphics for the on-air production. Notable achievements: I won an Emmy less than a year after becoming a director.
Why I do what I do: I didn’t want to direct at first because I liked doing graphics. However, I wanted to develop as a director once the opportunity came. I knew that I could be good at it, and being a director presents me a different challenge every day. The most challenging aspect of working in the news business: Not
flowers. The roads in general need fixing, and the timeliness would be the thing I would change.
knowing what to expect everyday can be a challenge, but really, that’s life.
To attract and retain young professionals, Iowa should: Stop telling them they’re overqualified for a position they applied for. It’s hard for those out of college to get a job. It took me three years to find a job in my field. Everyone just needs a chance to prove him or herself.
The skill I’ve developed most while on the job: I’ve been able to adapt to last-minute changes a lot. It’s a necessity in my line of work. To get away from work, I like to: Volunteer for, and watch, roller derby. I’ve co-announced two bouts for the Mid Iowa Rollers along side Chuck Utech and Sin Da Rolla. I also enjoy going to concerts and other live events such as the Iowa Energy and the Iowa Cubs. How I give back to the community: I used to do the Polar Plunge at the Des Moines Winter Games. I’ve

he Highland Park neighborhood, north of downtown, has turned into a little vinyl district over the last two years. On Euclid Avenue, all within walking distance of each other, are Red Rooster Records, Wayback Records and the most recent addition, The Underground Rock Shop, which opened last spring. Steve “Ratt” Radcliff, 47, first opened The Underground Rock Shop in Newton three years ago, but relocated to Des Moines where there’s a larger market of music fans and record collectors. “In Newton I would sell maybe $100 worth of CDs and records a month,” Radcliff said. “People would come in to buy clothes and hippie necklaces. Here I sell a lot more records.” And that was always Radcliff’s goal. Since he was a teenager he’s wanted to own a record store. He currently has more than 15,000 records in

Radcliff built the Des Moines store’s collection by purchasing the stock of two closing record stores in Cedar Rapids. He also seeded the store with 1,000 records from his personal collection so there would be some real gems when The Underground Rock Shop opened. Radcliff’s tastes run more toward punk and metal,

He said his collector side can sometimes come in conflict with his business sense. “When some really great punk stuff comes in it’s hard to put them out for sale,” Radcliff said. The walls of The Underground Rock Shop are covered with fliers from past shows at Des Moines’ Hairy Mary’s, Vaudeville Mews, the House of Bricks, People’s, Wooly’s and other venues. Radcliff’s hope is that people perusing his store might catch a glimpse of some show they remember while flipping through old records, CDs and even eight tracks.
When you look at the store’s bathroom door, it’s tagged by dozens of local and touring bands. The shop regularly hosts small hardcore, punk, metal and more straight forward rock shows in its back room. Since it opened more than 170 bands have performed. Radcliff has plans to expand the size of his concert offerings soon, but said it’s too soon to say how exactly. In addition to expanding his current location, Radcliff hopes to have a second Underground Rock Shop up and running at a to-bedetermined location by the summer. “I don’t settle,” Radcliff said.

Q: You play solo, as well as with the band 4010. How do the type of shows you do differ? Vastly. There are a few songs I do acoustic that I’ll also play with the band, but obviously it’s much different with the full band. When I’m playing with 4010 it’s mostly music I’ve written with them, and I’m just doing vocals, whereas I play acoustic guitar when I’m solo. 4010 will be playing Petapalooza with me; I’ll do two or three songs solo, then bring the band up.

hen Brian Junge was considering bringing Falbo Bros. Pizzeria to Des Moines, he carefully scoped out locations. It’s easy to find pizza places south of University Avenue on East 14th Street, but if you’re headed north it’s a pizza desert until you get to Scornovacca’s north of Euclid Avenue. That’s what prompted him to open his pizzeria at 1246 E. 14th St. If you’ve lived in Iowa City or Dubuque, Falbo might be a familiar name to you, but it’s new to the Des Moines area. Falbo Bros. got its start 20 years ago in Madison, Wis., and over the years has expanded to Iowa and Colorado. “Falbo Bros. tend to focus on college towns, but there are so many schools here that it seemed to make sense,” Junge said. “The area was also lacking in great pizza, which made this a good location to pick.” But this isn’t just another chain landing in Des Moines. Falbo Bros. makes all its dough and sauces in-store daily. It has location-specific pies like the Graziano Monster and the Alfredo chicken cordon bleu pizza. Pizzas are available in thin, deep dish and stuffed versions. Fries and onion rings are made fresh as well. T
hough Joker’s has taken over the space formerly occupied by Liar’s Club, one would be hard-pressed to notice many leftovers from the former occupant. The bathrooms remain intact, but the rest of the bar has been completely redone during a $250,000 remodel, according to the management team’s website. Liar’s Club’s centralized bar has been replaced with a sunken dance floor and pseudo stage where comedy acts will perform on Friday nights. We arrived at Joker’s at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Despite being the new bar on the block, it was at least two-thirds full by 10 p.m., based on our highly unofficial estimate. The mohawked DJ wearing a tuxedo T-shirt did his best to get the crowd moving. He played electronic versions of popular songs and busted out a few of his own moves, but nobody used the dance floor for anything other than a walkway to the restroom until after 10 p.m. Two sculptural jokers’ heads have been affixed to poles and stare down at the dance floor menacingly. Their eyes have been replaced

with red laser lights, and their mouths infrequently spit bursts of cold air onto unsuspecting dancers who dare stand in their paths. This provided multiple opportunities for laughs, as it startled more than one group during our stay. The former Liar’s Club stage has been replaced with a bar, and a second matching bar sits in the opposite corner of the expansive space. The floor is covered in mismatched carpet tiles, as if they bought up boxes of leftovers and placed them in

Manager Joe White, 32, admitted he serves whiskey drinks grudgingly at Royal Mile, 210 Fourth St. “Why would you mix it with anything? If you’re cold, have a glass of whiskey.” My companions nodded, noting that he was standing in front of the pub’s impressive wall of Scotch, 122 single-malt bottles from the world’s best distilleries. That said, we were days away from Iowa’s coldest month of the year — as compelling a reason as any to get creative.

White started with his grandma’s sore throat remedy, warming Maker’s Mark (any favorite will do) in a mug in a pot of steaming water. He added hot water, a twist of lemon zest and a dusting of cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and the nutmeg-based spice mace. Three thumbs up for Grandma. The drink, which looks like the tea my own granny used to serve, offered a seriously reassuring kick.
For this one, White warmed Jameson Irish Whiskey and added coffee, hazelnut-flavored Frangelico, chocolaty Baileys Irish Cream and rum-based Kahlua. Sounds like a flavor pile-up, but the whiskey’s kick kept it real. It was our first mug to go dry.
White created this one for bicyclists on Des Moines’ Tweed Ride last November, adding coffee and cream to the Rusty Nail, that Prohibition-era mix of Drambuie and Dewar’s Scotch whisky. We relished this one for its deep, strong, rich flavor. White finished the tasting by sharing the last of his Powers 12 Year Old Special Reserve. “I don’t need warm whiskey to warm me up,” he said. “I need whiskey.” Smooth and creamy, it made his point — and reminded us that shorter days and colder climes have their perks.
