Yet Luke and Marissa Kephart managed to meet â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and fall in love â&#x20AC;&#x201D; despite the miles between them. All it took was one night over

Christmas break, when the two were back for the holiday (Marissa from Austin and Luke from Philadelphia). They met through mutual friends and siblings at The Lift on Fourth Street. ANNA JONES/PHOTOS SPECIAL TO JUICE they were engaged a year later. “I noticed a connection,” Luke said. “I was intrigued. I noticed she was smart, funny and had pretty eyes. We were really honest with each other, and it was a refreshing change.” Luke and Marissa were married Sept. 10, 2011. The proposal: “I knew I was going to propose to her after I went down in February 2010 — two months after I met her,” Luke said. He waited a while longer, after having just moved back to Iowa for family reasons. While video-chatting with Marissa, who was still in Austin, she said she was ready to be asked. together at Joseph’s when she returned to Iowa. The venue: Marissa and Luke were married at the Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids, about an hour and a half northwest of Des Moines. Marissa said she had wanted to be married outside and in a barn, and looked at several in the area. They happened

upon Whiterock because Arin Wiebers, co-owner of Ephemera Stationery Studio in the East Village, passed along the suggestion from a customer. “It was perfect,” Marissa said. “I fell in love with the way the sunlight seeped through the cracks. Just the whole aesthetic of the place was exactly what we wanted.” Whiterock Conservancy,

She credits her designs to being “heavily influenced” by Rifle Paper Co. She also designed the programs and the table settings. Her mother did all the printing.

The decorations: Marissa started by looking at several blogs, but said it became overwhelming. So she and Luke started actively collecting things to use as decoration for the wedding. They scoured flea markets, thrift stores, estate sales and vintage boutiques for books, jars, knick knacks and other treasures. They looked for “old and tattered” textures, focusing loosely

Greg’s sons served as co-best men while Kelsey’s sister, Jillian served as matron of honor. Kelsey’s niece, Afton, was a bridesmaid. The reception: Other than a first dance for the couple and fatherdaughter dance for Kelsey and her dad, the Leapers didn’t want the reception to turn into a crazy dance party. Instead they stuck with a catered dinner while Santa Maria wine flowed freely. Kelsey brought board games for children to play, though most of the kids just ran around the winery grounds after hitting the “candy bar” (a candy table arranged by Kelsey’s mom). “With a larger wedding, you feel obligated to reach out to every person and stand in a big long line and shake hands,” Greg said. “We managed to have more of a get-together kind of feel, which didn’t make it an effort to give everyone your attention. We could show our gratitude without it feeling like work, or like we were drained because we put on an extra show. Catering was handled by Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery. Tenelle managed to escape from under her older (protective) cousin’s wing long enough to be introduced to Chris. “He looked like a super model,” she said. “Then when I actually met him, I discovered he was charming. We danced song after song after song. I didn’t want the night to be over.”

odi Stevens is a busy, newly engaged woman. Her task: Plan a July wedding in Des Moines with creative concepts and five bridesmaids in four states. So when Stevens, 28, became engaged last month to Neil Roberts, 29, she got on Pinterest, a virtual pinboard site, and started planning. “We’ve had to move things forward as fast as we can,” she said of her seven-month engagement time. “Pinterest has been a great tool for me.” When she started

thinking about her wedding, Stevens first turned to the thick, glossy magazines she imagined she’d pick up someday. She flipped through, but the pages fell flat for inspiration. She found a more inspirational tool at Thinc Iowa, a tech convention held last fall in Des Moines that featured Ben Silbermann, co-founder of Pinterest (and former Des Moines resident). When she attended the October event, his concept impressed her. “He seemed to really understand the value of design and user experience,” Stevens, a market-

ing programs manager at Palisade Systems, said. It also helped her find an idea for wedding “save the dates.” Two concepts — one “tying the knot” invite and another of a couple holding a string with the date — helped her hone an idea of combining the two. All thanks to Pinterest. Besides seeing different ideas, the site helps organize the ones she likes. “You can have all these things together on one beautiful page,” she said. She has shown it to her wedding planner on her iPad, sent the page to her bridesmaids and showed

her mother that burlap table runners can be classy. “It helps remove that barrier of communication by showing it,” she said. Pinterest has also helped her fine-tune the little details (like favors and thank-you notes) from the big, general concept she and her fiancé started out with. Besides communication and inspiration, Stevens says Pinterest also helped solidify an idea to use milk bottles by seeing them in context of other pins on the site. “It was validating that my idea could work,” she said.

Here’s how she uses it: she follows some people, mostly strangers, whose style of wedding or event décor she likes. She also finds pins by clicking on the wedding and events category on the Pinterest main page, which shows her pins from people she doesn’t necessarily follow. “I think a lot of people use Pinterest for wedding inspiration,” Stevens said. And since pins link to an image’s original source, she said she has also used it to find more information on products and projects. Pinterest is starting to change things for brides, said Kelly Sparks, 30, owner of Socialize event planning and management in Des Moines. “It allows for more of a collaboration,” she said. If wording is a problem, then check the Web for sites that may have suggestions.” Or, do what recent bride Cindy Windsor did and skip programs altogether. Windsor, a middle school science teacher, knew she wanted chalkboards as a recurring theme at her wedding. She used a chalkboard propped on an easel at her outdoor ceremony to create a makeshift “program,” providing information on the petite wedding party. Windsor also went the DIY route on her floral arrangements. “I didn’t use a florist at all,” she said. “I asked my sisters to surprise me and make a bouquet from flowers purchased that morning at the Downtown Farmers’ Market. They put together a beautiful bouquet of flowers and then delivered them to me and my bridesmaid, my stepdaughter Mia.” Couch said that while do-it-yourself wedding touches can help brides pinch pennies, it’s important not to over-commit. “Make sure to request the assistance of your family and friends when working on DIY projects and do not take on too much,” she said. “It is pretty easy to say, ‘We can do that ourselves.’ But there is so much on your plate when planning your wedding that it can all be overwhelming when it comes down to it. “Do not be up all night on the night before your wedding working on your DIY projects just to save a few dollars.”

Understand where to splurge “When my bride is worried about something like chair covers on the ceremony chairs, I ask them to reflect on the last wedding they attended and if they remember the chairs they sat on for the ceremony,” Couch said. “They usually cannot recall, and realize it is not that big of a problem.” It’s this type of prioritizing that can prevent a bride from fretting over insignificant dmJuice.com

Though there are plenty of areas where a bride can strive to cut the budget, there are a few where splurging can’t be a bad idea. “Photography is a place where you should not cut costs,” Couch said. “Your wedding day flies by and photographs are a great way to reflect back on your special day for years to come. There is no re-do for your wedding day, and if your photographer is ‘sub-par’ then your photos will definitely reflect this. Make sure that you check references and see their work before you sign.” Couch also suggests investing in a good DJ, which costs much less than a band. If the DJ does not keep guests on the dance floor, many will leave early. “A great DJ will keep your guests up dancing all night.” Couch said. “That is something that your guests will remember and talk about for years.” To ensure her guests were happy with the music selection, Windsor included a spot on her RSVP cards to request songs. That way she had the requests ahead of time to ensure the DJ had adequate time to download them before the big event.

Get creative When it came time to register, Windsor decided they didn’t need pots, pans or that fancy set of China that’s only used once a year. They did, however, want a honeymoon, so they registered themselves on The Big Day (thebigday registry.com), which allowed those invited to the wedding to contribute towards the trip: a short stay in San Diego and a voyage up the California coast to San Francisco. Guests could choose the type of event to which they wanted to contribute,

Candy is a great way to express your individuality with the choices and is a beautiful display with the candy colors coordinating with the wedding colors.”

Catering and alcohol: Must use one of four approved caterers, with alcohol provided by the caterer. Setting up and tearing down: No set start times, though outdoor receptions

Sticks Studio Where: 3631 S.W. 61st St. About the venue: Modern meets woodsy, with a full wall of windows in the secluded workspace of the studio artists. Capacity: Up to 300 guests for a sit-down dinner, or 400 for a standing reception. Booking: Now booking for 2012 and 2013. Catering and alcohol: Preferred options include Johnny's Italian Steakhouse, Gateway Market, Taste to Go, Occasions Made Right, Becky Smith Catering, Great Caterers of Iowa and Out of Box Catering. Non-preferred caterers are allowed for an additional fee. Guests may supply their own alcohol, or purchase through a caterer.

Setting up and tearing down: Caterers will help with set up. Space must be cleaned by Sunday evening. Cost: $1,000-$3,000, with an additional $500 fee for the use of the drawing room.
