HOW D-GRADEÂŽBIO IS PRODUCED? Desch Plantpak purchases plant-based biopolymers and produces pellets from them that are suitable for processing into a film. In consultation with growers and retailers we opted for an olive green colour to make the film look as natural as possible. The film is used to produce pots and trays by means of the thermoforming process. Production and punching waste is immediately processed internally into new semi-finished products. In terms of raw materials this ensures optimal logistics performance.

OK BIOBASED & OK COMPOST The quality label measures the percentage of a product that is renewable in an exact and scientifically substantiated manner, and awards stars on this basis. This makes verification transparent and consistent.
Our customers are clearly becoming more environmentally aware. This creates a growing sales market for products made from renewable raw materials. The customer’s environmentallyconscious motivation also results in the need for an independent, quality guarantee for the renewability of the raw materials. The ‘OK Biobased’ quality label satisfies this need.
Based on the established percentage of renewable raw materials (% Biobased), a product is awarded 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars. D-Grade®BIO is classified as ‘4 star OK Biobased’ – the highest possible rating – and is also ‘OK Compost industrial certified’.
In contrast to the LCA (Life Cycle Analysis), the research method behind the OK biobased quality label is extremely simple.

LIFECYCLE OF D-GRADE®BIO D-Grade® contributes to a healthy environment because during its production far less energy is consumed and far less CO2 is emitted than during the production of similar products of recycled polypropylene. Moreover, we only use renewable energy and guarantee the technical and economic usability of our products. D-Grade®BIO is produced from 100% natural raw materials. D-Grade®BIO products are 100% biodegradable and industrially compostable in accordance with the EN 13432 standard. D-Grade®BIO is TüV OK Compost certified under number O 09-376-D and TüV OK Biobased**** certified under number B 10-054-A.

HYDROPONICS Growing lettuce on water and nutrients has expanded considerably in recent years. The plants grow in small hydroponic pots with lots of slits, also called slit pots. Water and nutrients can easily reach the roots and the plant is provided with sufficient stability. Growers can effectively cultivate their crops, which can be shipped straight to the store when ready. Once the crops are harvested the D-GradeÂŽBIO Hydroponic pots can be industrially composted. And this significantly reduces the amount of waste compared with plastic growing pots.

ADDED VALUE FOR PLANTS D-Grade®BIO pots offer diverse types of plants added value. Customers can choose between the standard D-Grade®BIO print or a customised version. It is important that the pot features a clear description for the consumer. The rear of the standard D-Grade®BIO print always features the TüV certification with the accompanying text.
