2021 - the year gone!

F

Writer- Poornima Menon

rom December 2019 and all of 2020, life went one a roller coaster ride and it seemed like we were travelling simultaneously in the slow and the fast lane. While the weirdness of what was to come started with toilet paper rolls taking centre stage, the attention moved from the netball and footie courts to monopoly and other board games. Gone were the days when mums and dads went separate ways with the children, taking them to different venues, be it piano or ballet classes or music lessons, the era of family time as it existed in the 70s and the 80s was on its way back. The tiny virus with tinier tentacles had us all doing head stands. 2021 came with hope and as the sun rose from the East on the 1st of January 2021, we all were ready to put COVID behind us and move on. But alas! It was not to be! Refusing to cower down the mutated form of the virus emerged with a vengeance taking lives and creating havoc. Life was in disarray and the cocky human race was once again brought to its knees. And this time it hurt even more. The novelty of the initial lockdown had worn off and the mandatory hand washing now had the

‘masked’ companion. Businesses that were slowly beginning to crawl back to life were trampled upon with no mercy and there was no place safer than home. While some were fortunate to stay in their jobs and work from home, the absence of human interaction for the social beings that we are slowly started impacting our mental health. As would in any situation, some thrived, and some suffered. The COVID related payments affected many businesses, and we were in the strange predicament where there were jobs aplenty with no takers. People were getting addicted to receiving a payment without lifting a finger. The already dying economy was now being muscled to submission by poorly man-

aged government handouts. People were earning more sitting at home doing nothing and thus were not motivated to return to work. The media played its role in highlighting the trivial and not reporting on things that mattered. The anti-vaxers manipulated the media and a futile war began between the propagators of AstraZeneca and Pfizer. There was so much misinformation and false news out there, with most TV channels oozing negativity and fear mongering. Australia became the laughingstock with premature, unplanned, and unrealistic lockdowns. At one point there seemed no light at the end of the long dark ‘lockdown’ tunnel. Fortunately, people started waking up to the fact that vaccination was the only way

forward, the voices of the anti-vaxers faded into obscurity as sensibility prevailed. And mid-October the state of NSW decided it was time! The lockdowns were lifted, and freedom of movement proclaimed to those who were double jabbed. This came as a huge relief to the Hindu community who had two of their major festivals, one in mid-October and another in early November. For others, relief came in the form of family time. I hugged my older son after a gap of 12 weeks!! Christmas shopping began and a distant cousin of life as we knew it was back. But as we started getting comfortable, and planning for our Christmas celebrations and getaways, Omicron came knocking. But we must carry on with life and not let this miniscule of a creature rule our lives. We cannot afford to get caught up in a vicious cycle crafted by the virus. Booster doses have now become available, which is believed will give us that extra layer of protection. I have had mine.

What has 2022 in store for us, no one knows. There is no denying that vaccinations and booster doses are the shield that will protect us from the wrath of the virus. But for how long will be a question that will continue to linger …… How soon and wildly the virus will mutate, nobody knows. Life has never been this unpredictable. And as we tune ourselves to settle down to the new norm, we step forward with this uncanny wariness Download Our App

hanging over us! Hoping and praying that “ALL IS AND ALL WILL CONTINUE TO BE WELL IN OUR WORLD. “Wishing you all a HAPPY AND SAFE 2022. PS: I made the best of the 2 months I got by catching with my friends and my saree tribe. The silver linings in the otherwise dark clouds. www.DesiAustralia.com

National Backyard Cricket is Back This Summer Cricket all-star legends lend their support to raise funds to improve access to education at home and abroad

S

ummer is here so it is time for Australian cricket fans to pad up and face the deliveries in 2022’s National Backyard Cricket Day.

National Backyard Cricket is an opportunity for enthusiasts to take time out with family and friends to enjoy a game of cricket, and it’s for a good cause as the funds raised support education projects in Australia and other cricket-playing nations. This year’s events will culminate on Sunday 6th February 2022, however Australians can get involved by playing their own Backyard Cricket Game anytime over the summer. National Backyard Cricket has secured allstar support from some of the world’s cricketing legends including Brett Lee, Alyssa Healy, Ryan Carters, Steve O’Keefe, Russel Arnold, Asanka Gurusinha, Alex Blackwell, Download Our App

Ed Cowan, Simon Taufel and Nathan Lyon. The National Backyard Cricket Chairman and LBW Trust Director, Marek Ristwej, said: “We are excited to be working with Cricket Australia to get Australians playing the sport we all love for a great cause. National Backyard Cricket is a wonderful way to enjoy cricket at any age. So many of us have great memories of summers spent playing backyard cricket, and this summer you can play and also know that you are doing good by supporting Australian Country Libraries and student tertiary education in cricket-playing nations. “By registering your team to participate in National Backyard Cricket, you will be supporting libraries across regional Australia as well as tertiary education in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tanzania, South Africa, Afghanistan and Indonesia.” “National Backyard Cricket is a commuDECEMBER I 2021

nity funding event that helps level the global playing field in education in places not as lucky as Australia. Australians can come together to create transformative educational opportunities for disadvantaged young men and women in these cricket-playing nations,” said Brett Lee, Australian International Cricketer. “Games aren’t restricted to the backyard, so cricket fans can roll their arm over at the beach, in the park or anywhere they can find a suitable pitch to set up stumps. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy time with family, friends, your team or colleagues.” The LBW Trust said gathering in big numbers may not be possible while we are impacted by COVID-19, so people are urged to play in a safe environment while enjoying their game of backyard cricket outdoors. www.DesiAustralia.com

T

oday, I am sharing a story of a five-year-old girl, born and brought up in Australia to Indian parents, exploring her way through her first year of primary school. This little girl, charming, full of energy, driven by curiosity has almost always drawn everyone’s attention with her mischievously expressive eyes and her cheerful laughter. She started Kindergarten, in the local primary school, in a suburb with a highly anglicised demographic and a Christian population of 62.4% (according to 2016 Census data). Brimming with excitement on the first day of school, looking forward to what the school had to offer, in terms of friends, teachers, art, sports, holding the hand of her elder sister, she took those tiny steps into the gates of the school. COVID-19 was just rearing its ugly head and just a few weeks after, starting her Kindergarten, restrictions hit - ability to move freely around the school, play and do what a five-year-old can do at school all got re-defined. This, however, did not dampen her spirit one bit or her love to live life. Her

experience with adventures the school had to offer continued each day.

It was end-of March when we moved into full Lockdown and online schooling began with schools and teachers not fully equipped or geared mentally to start teaching these young and influenceable children remotely, but the whole school and parent community came together to ensure the young minds continued to develop uninterrupted. School resumed in May 2020, and although not back to normal, a modified routine developed, but I started noticing the excitement of going to school wane in this little girl. She was no longer excited, nor curious about school. As a parent, I attributed it to a turbulent start to the year, with the constant changes and restrictions imposed by COVID-19, until….. One fine morning, my beautiful and adorable little girl, refused to go to school. She refused to shower, get ready, have breakfast and was just beside herself crying uncontrollably. Worried, I asked what was so disturbing and if she had a fight with her “akka”. Swallowing some of her tears, and with a heavy heart, she said “Amma, if I shower myself, twice a day, and scrub my body, will I become fair like you”. Surprised by the comment, and overcome by compassion, I, at that moment could do nothing but just hug my little girl. I then had a very calm conversation with her and enquired from her if anyone at school or outside made her feel “this way”. She unwaveringly refused and didn’t reveal the source of her anxiety. I then changed tact, and spoke to her about how beautiful she was, and we spoke about many analogies to explain to her that every skin colour is truly beautiful. I told her, that if she was given a painting and only given the colour white, to paint as opposed to a painting with many different colours to paint, which one would look DECEMBER I 2021

nicer. She agreed the one with many colours would be more attractive and so I told her “What you bring to Australia, sweetheart, is that colour that makes the painting look pretty”. I also told her, you know at night-time with no light, it doesn’t matter what colour we are, because we are all the same colour in darkness. I said to her, did you know when we bleed, we all bleed red. She intently listened, nodded, her crying reduced and breathing returned to its normal rhythm, and a glimmer of smile returned to her face. She seemed to absorb all the information, and the curiosity in her eyes returned. As I stopped, she asked me a question – “Amma, if I shower every day really well, when I get older will I be fair like you?” As I hugged my little child, I held back my inner laughter at the thought that – “all this conversation with her, and it had zero impact”, and told her that she is beautiful, more beautiful than I ever will be. She is and will always remain “Unfair and Lovely”, because beauty has no skin tone!! Writer- Sneha Rao www.DesiAustralia.com

ustralia is a fascinating country. It’s also called the land of opportunities. For me it has been bigger than opportunities – Australia has given me an identity and purpose.

again. I always chose the latter. Life is not complicated when you have the right mentor, a sound support system and most importantly a guilt free conscious. And it must be for this reason that I have always had the people around me, both known and unknown say that I radiate happiness and positive energy.

Every year many people migrate to Australia for various reasons. So did I in June 2002, holding a Permeant Residency visa close to my heart. With my husband by my side, my 8-year-old daughter holding on to me and 28 weeks baby in my womb, I landed! Excited, nervous, uncertain, homesick, culture shocked and anxious – I went through a myriad of emotions during those initial weeks on foreign soil. While today I consider myself fairly confident, independent and outspoken, that’s not how I was raised. In fact, for most of my teen years and even into my twenties I was very timid, obedient, and gullible. I had a very protective and struggle free upbringing and was always surrounded with abundance of love and care. My parents have very high morals and lead a disciplined life. They had set the right foundation for me. During my younger years, I was a happy soul in my own shell and did not know then that in my late 40s I would grow into a very different woman and would continue to be very happy and contented, with a newfound purpose for my life. I, like anyone else out there have had my share of failures, struggles, or hardships but this story is about a different journey, it is about me pushing myself to become the better version of myself and live a life with the purpose of spreading happiness. I follow Jainism and a few years ago, while performing an introspection exercise, in order to understand the theory of karma, I was compelled to think about my soul, the reasons I have various people in my life and how my dealings with other people are pre-planned by the karmas of my previous lives. The simple message I took from the discourse was to make knowing myself a priority, to know what defines me as a soul, totally separate from others’ perceptions/expectations of me as a human body. Once

A random question from my manager a few months ago made me realise that I react to problems differently from other people. My manager asked, “Parul, if I may ask, how do you always remain so happy? Nothing seems to agitate you. What’s the secret?” Though my answer to my manager was “I don’t know”, I knew the answer. I cannot afford to be sad or angry because there are a lot of people in my life who now depend on me being happy and me being able to transfer some happiness in their lives. I find spreading happiness therapeutic.

I had figured that out, nothing seemed more valuable. Knowing who I am became the compass that guided me to unexpected opportunities and helped me sail through setbacks. I believe that ‘knowing who you are is the centreboard that will help steady you when you’re afraid you may capsize’. I had found my motto – ‘Be kind to all souls and spread happiness’. I recall the times when it felt like everything had been taken away from me - my pride and my happiness and I was cast away, shattered into the many pieces; but I believe helped me find the energy from within to rise again. The simple fact was that I only had two options in front of me made the choice easy - one was to blame the whole universe about the fall and the other was to rise

Recently I started a match making service called “Indian Matrimonial” – helping people find their love and a lifetime of happiness. Although it is a full functioning start up business, at its core is Community Service. It is my way of spreading happiness, hope and support. Every day I meet new people; while some call me in desperation and some others call me hoping that I would help stabilise their rocking love boats. At times a few also challenge my patience, but that’s when I go to my centreboard and read over the mounted words “Be kind to all souls and spread happiness”. By: Parulben Mehta

He has been with me since I first picked up a bat.” At the age of nine Nagpal joined her younger brother’s cricket club, BurnsideSprings United CC. “I had great fun making new friends and learning how to play the game. I loved the challenges our coaches set me to improve.” Nagpal won the Coaches Award in her first season and in her words, “that motivated me to get better.” Nagpal is a medium fast bowler. “It is the beauty in the run up and the action of bowling that I love about becoming a bowler. I am tested a lot more with my batting, but I am up for the challenge.” Nagpal made her first representative side in her second season of competitive cricket. She represented the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association in an Under 12’s tournament. So successful was her debut in representative cricket, Nagpal has continued to be selected in representative teams from the Youth Premier League Under 14’s with the Western Download Our App

Spirit to the Youth Super Series under 14’s with the Melbourne Renegades. In 2018/19, Nagpal was selected in the School Sports Victoria Under 12 team that travelled to Western Australia, with her team finishing third. Nagpal’s bowling statistics are impressive. She took her first hat trick in the Under 14’s Boys Team at Burnside Springs United. Her best figures came in her first season with Essendon Maribyrnong Park Ladies Cricket Club in Victorian Premier Cricket. Playing in the Seconds, Nagpal took 5 for 20 from 9 overs. Nagpal was selected in the Under 15 Victorian Female Team when she was 12 years old. “My favourite player is Steve Smith but I closely role model Australian players, Molly Strano, Georgia Wareham and Elyse Villani who all play for Essendon Maribyrnong Park Ladies Cricket Club. I not only watch what they do on the ground but what they do off it to prepare to be the best they can. I was lucky enough to be selected in the First XIs and played a few games with them. What better way to do it than work and practice hard as I watch these amazing role models close up. My aim is to represent Australia one day.” Nagpal has a very mature approach to her sport, one that has no doubt has been moulded by her family, her coaches, and the Maribyrnong Sports Academy (MSA) where she has been on a sporting and accelerated learning scholarship since year 7. “A typical week during a cricket season includes Strength and Conditioning training at MSA on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. These sessions can also include meetings with the nutritionist and sports psychologist. We work with medium weights to improve our core strength, upper and lower bodies. We work on resistance type training to improve our power base. Download Our App

Conditioning sessions also include interval running and sprint sessions. Cricket training with MSA is on Wednesdays. Cricket training days for representative and club teams vary for me throughout the week depending on schedule and workload. I train with Essendon Maribyrnong Park on Thursdays.” However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Nagpal. She has a strong message for young athletes that she didn’t do. “I missed a lot of games in 2019/2020 when I didn’t listen to my body and suffered a stress fracture in my shin.” She urges all young athletes to be open and honest with coaches, doctors and family about how you are feeling. “A fit and healthy body is essential for good performance. Listen to your body please.”

Award in the Secondary School category for cricket excellence in 2020/21. This year Nagpal has been selected in the Cricket Victoria Under 16 Female Emerging Player Program. Throughout her cricket journey Nagpal has had her feet firmly planted on the ground. While her passion for cricket is infectious, her focus is purely on learning her craft in a very process-oriented manner. “Every time I pick up a ball or a bat, I learn something about myself that I can use to improve my skills. My school work is equally important to me.” Nagpal received a 2019 and 2020 Sports Director’s Award recognising her academic achievement in the previous 12 months as well as State or National representation. We all look forward to following Nagpal’s cricketing journey.

Nagpal is developing into a young leader, which is being recognised by her clubs. She has had various roles as a vice captain and captain in both her local and representative teams. Her ability is now being recognised. She received a Victorian School Sports

Nagpal is the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club, October Don Deeble Sports Star Award winner. Her award is sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, Strathmore Community Bank and the Deer Park Club.

The Sacred India Gallery-con By: Rajni Ghai Malhotra

28 November 2021: In Mann Ki Baat session for the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the role played by Sacred India Gallery in connecting Australia with India. Located in Perth, Western Australia, the tranquil Sacred India Gallery showcases Jagattarini Dasi’s exquisite miniatures which provides a unique experience of spiritual India. The gallery is a maze of intricate displays, traditional Indian carvings, and Jagattarini’s exquisite miniatures, all of which capture the sights, sounds, and mystical atmosphere of spiritual India. Jagattarini Dasi lived in Vrindavan for 13 years, where she was enamored by the people, traditions, food, and art. She returned to Australia in 1996 and started creating exquisite miniature scale dioramas. The Sacred India Gallery was opened in 2012 to store, preserve and showcase the miniatures to the public. 100th Charter flight

n the month of March 2020, under great adversity, we summoned the will and along with the support and blessings of some great wellwishers, we operated our first charter flight. We weren’t sure back then how many more we would fly. Hey, a part of us wasn’t even sure we would ever have another plane in the air again! But we persevered. Our backs were against the wall, but we found room for courage. We banked upon the goodwill of our passengers and lo and behold, today, we flew our 100th charter flight!

If you’re seeing friends or family, choose an outdoor venue. Open or well-ventilated spaces reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 because infectious particles are more quickly diffused in the open air than in spaces with less ventilation. Transmission of COVID-19 is more common indoors, where there may be less space to physically distance, and where people may come into contact with droplets and aerosolised particles more easily.

More info: https://www. nsw.gov.au/.../covid-safebusiness/ventilation

Did you get a positive result from your rapid antigen test? Don’t panic! Go to your nearest COVID-19 testing clinic and get a PCR (nose and throat swab) test and selfisolate until you get your test results. You will get a text message from NSW Health within 72 hours with your PCR results – you must follow the advice provided in this text message. A few things to remember to keep you and those around you safe: • If you get a positive rapid antigen test result late at night, get tested first thing the next morning. • If you can’t get to the testing clinic yourself, ask a friend or someone that you live with for help - wear a mask, sit in the back seat and keep the windows open Check testing clinic opening hours before leaving home:

Been around someone who has COVID-19, but haven’t been contacted by NSW Health? If you’re told by your family, friends, or workplace that you’ve been around a person who has COVID-19, but haven’t got a text message, follow the advice for people exposed to a case:

https://www.nsw.gov.au/.../ testing/self-isolation-rules...

To ease pressure on testing clinics, we encourage you to only get a PCR (nose and throat swab) test if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, are a household contact, have had a high or moderate risk exposure to COVID-19, or have been directed to take a test by NSW Health or the Department of Education. Interstate travellers are still able to get a PCR test at NSW COVID-19 testing clinics. If you receive a case alert in your Service NSW app, please monitor for symptoms and only get a PCR test if you feel unwell. Travelling overseas--What Whattoto Travelling overseas pack whatto toexpect expect pack and what Tips for families for smoother, safer travel

By: Rajni Ghai Malhotra

Anya Malhotra

Amyra Malhotra

It’s the holiday season and for many of us it comes with the added joy of being able to travel to be with family at this happy time. But how the world of flying has changed! For Australians embarking on international travel after almost two years of travel ban, this realisation hits hard and fast.

the only hard decision to make was the choice of airlines, city and duration of transit. Travellers are now looking at longer wait at check-in, mandatory masks at airports and in air, constant sanitisation, limited service flights, COVID testing before departure and on arrival, navigating and updating multiple apps with COVID tests status and keeping up with ever changing travel and quarantine

guidelines. The hurdles are endless. Things to pack: Amongst the many essentials you will pack for the trip, be sure to include the following: Patience: Accept that these are exceptional times. So when you pack for your travel, remember to also pack a whole lot

Recently, my family and I travelled overseas and experienced first-hand what it means to travel in COVID times. Based on our personal experience, we have collectively shared below some tips for teenagers, little ones and parents who are thinking of travelling, on being better prepared and having a smoother experience. Tips for grown-ups: Travelling internationally is no longer the breezy affair we are used to where Download Our App

of patience and ability to roll with any sudden changes to your travel plans.

your journals with you. Be prepared to handle stressed out parents: It is best to stand patiently in queues, not take your mask off and do as you’re asked.

Snacks and drinks: Queues will be long and slow moving. At many airports there will be only a few cafes open with limited food and seating options. Pack extra snacks and drink bottles just in case.

How to deal with siblings: there are always challenging moments when travelling with siblings but it is important to keep the younger ones close and out of trouble as you and your family navigate the long queues and wait times.

Keep-em-busy items: Little activity books/activity packs to keep the little ones occupied. Wipes and sanitisers: You cannot have enough of these. Equip your children with their own sanitisers and wet wipes to avoid digging into your bags repeatedly. Hand care: Pack plenty of hand cream or lotion to avoid chapped fingers and dry hands with overuse of sanitisers.

Make sure you have your passport and COVID vaccine certificate ready: because of Covid everything is a rush and super strict so you need to get extra things checked. Remember to be ready with everything you could possibly need – passports, vaccination passports, masks, sanitisers, wipes etc.

Things to do before travel: 4 Ensure you are up-to-date with the latest travel and quarantine requirements of the country of boarding and destination.

Pack your own comfortable pillow and stuffed toy: to make it easier for you to fall asleep.

Don’t forget the 100ml on-board rule: So when you pack your lotion or drinks or any liquids, they need to be in 100ml containers to be allowed in cabin baggage.

4 Get tested based and update the relevant apps/websites with your COVID test results, vaccination certificates and any other information required.

Keep lots of fun activities to do: limited service flights mean not enough TV to watch and not enough activities. So pack your own.

4 Talk to your children and prepare them mentally for the experience ahead especially that they will need to keep masks on throughout the flight and at the airports, sometimes even wear a visor.

Little babies crying: they will cry when they are uncomfortable, if you find it difficult to sleep, you can use your headphones to block the noise a little bit.

4 Prepare them also for unexpected delays and lengthy wait times in queues. Tips for Young Travellers Here are some tips for teenagers and children who are travelling internationally in these COVID times based on first hand experience of 12 year old Anya and 5 year old Amyra. Due to COVID times, flying internationally is a lot harder so be prepared for limited service in flight and keep your masks on at all times! Tips for the little travellers: Pack your own headphones: be sure to pack your own headphones because you never know what kind of headphones you will get on the plane, they may not fit! Download Our App

Wash you hands, sanitise, touch nothing – keep your hands clean and mask on all time. Keep close to your family and do as you’re told – long lines of people make sure you keep close to your parents and go to the toilet when they ask you to! Tips for teenage travellers: Make sure you have plenty of snacks and munchies: Due to COVID, flights are running with limited service and there will be less food. So make sure you have lots of snacks and juices! Pack a book to read/ art journal/diary: limited service flights also mean limited in-fight entertainment suitable for children. So always keep a book to read. If you like to write, sketch or draw, carry DECEMBER I 2021

Things to be prepared for: 4 Noisy babies – sadly, it is as hard for them as it is for the rest of us 4 Limited service flights meaning limited food service and limited in flight entertainment 4 Being extra alert – keep your hands clean and don’t tough anything you don’t need to 4 Lots and lots of people and big crowds, extremely long queues and lines of people 4 Keeping your mask on the whole time in the airport and on the plane apart from when you’re eating 4 Fogged vision if you are required to wear a visor in addition to the mask 4 Stressed out parents and sometimes annoying siblings 4 Frayed tempered people snapping at travellers 4 Lots of Covid related extra checks Most of these tips are handy for domestic travel also. But the most important tip – stay calm and be mindful that it is just as difficult for the airport staff and airlines crew as it is for us travellers.

Bon Voyage. www.DesiAustralia.com

In July 2020, I had an International tie-up with a Canadian company to curate customised recipes using Indian millets, whole grains and Indian herbs with their team of expert nutritionists for their clients. Until God gave me another job to do. Covid has affected everybody’s livelihood in 2020, so did Women tailors too. While establishing Nekki, I worked really hard from walking miles for quality fabric to weighing a lot of weight while shopping raw material from the wholesalers. Somewhere, I compromised my health in between and had a drastic weight loss of 10 kg in 2 months with constant bleeding from anus, which I considered as piles as I was having the same treatment for the past 6 months. When visited the doctor with symptoms of bleeding with stool and bloating, the doctor diagnosed it as Piles as CT Stomach and other full body tests were normal, just haemoglobin was low that was due to constant bleeding.

Although mum helped her and gave her work too, somewhere I couldn’t sleep that night thinking about how so many ladies like her would be suffering with the same pain and financial insecurity. Therefore, I decided to empower women like them by giving them employment, not help. Here NEKKI OFFICIALS-unfold goodness, a Premium Women Leisure wear brand was born in Oct 2020. In Feb 2021, when my body started giving severe alarms then I decided to visit a Laparoscopic Lady Surgeon in Amritsar who examined me and even she initially diagnosed Piles/ fissure. Again, got a whole abdomen Ultrasound and full body test, everything was normal except haemoglobin dropped to 7gm. Even after one month of medicine, the bleeding wasn’t stopping even for a day. Then she suggested I should go for a colonoscopy to find out the actual reason. Had a Wedding at home which delayed the test for a week, since I knew something was majorly wrong with my body and didn’t want anyone to know about my health condition therefore kept a fake smile throughout the wedding although enjoyed a lot while twinning with my darling 7-year-old daughter.

16 MARCH 2021 (THE WORST DAY OF MY LIFE) After attending that wedding, I started bleeding vigorously which made me get an urgent appointment for a Sigmoidoscopy by my doctor where she accompanied me on my request as I wanted a female doctor to be present. While doctors were doing the procedure, I myself 1st time, saw a tumour inside me… fully covered with blood and it was quite big in size. Both the doctors kept quiet and asked to get the biopsy and then I figured out its Tumour but didn’t want to believe my eyes or ears at that time. I asked my doctor to be honest with me as I have to share this worst news with my family and have to be mentally prepared for it. Therefore, she said it’s 80% its Cancer tumour rest they will confirm post biopsy, and followed MRI, CT SCANS, PET SCANS, BLOOD TESTS and what not. However, the same day we got all the tests done, got the reports and by evening the doctor confirmed its Colon Cancer stage was yet to be confirmed by a biopsy report. I called my brother informed him and told not to tell mom as she’s a hyper BP patient and lives alone in Delhi. They visited me the next morning and took me to my brother’s house in Chandigarh to discuss all the reports with

various doctors from UK, US, Dubai all over India. The overall opinion came forward was its STAGE IV COLON CANCER METASTASIS TO VARIOUS REGIONS OF LIVER AND through blood lymph nodes has formed in both the Breasts. Next morning, we left for Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, Delhi where we got all the Test yet again to be sure and wanted to believe whatever was being said in Amritsar was just a nightmare. Sadly, the reports were almost the same. The doctor said there is no scope of surgery and I could survive max 2 months as it is widely speeded and I could have multiple organ failure anytime for which they will take a full consent form on the day of the admission. They can start with radiation and chemotherapy for which they will put a small value on my chest and I could have a urine/stool bag for 6 months or so. Overall, the same reviews came forward from all the doctors wherever we sent the reports. By the time, my brother and Sister-in-law in the UK got the news, consulted NHS UK doctors, Cancer Research UK Doctors, even they said 2 months max life I have. Therefore, they booked their tickets and came straight to India despite of Covid and are still here right next to me as a supporting pillar. in various Hospitals in India from Mumbai to Kerala. I told them ‘MY DECISION OF NOT TO START CHEMOTHERAPY’ and landed in a hospital bed. would not agree to, but they couldn’t force me. Then everyone started searching for alternative treatments which thousands of Indian people are opting for as a Cancer Treatment. We came to know about Cancer Healers Homeopathy treatment, went to them with all the reports and they guaranteed that their medicine will do wonders within one month. Initially they gave medicine for 2 weeks, which helped me in bloating and stomach pain but bleeding did not stop even with any medicine. Before, biopsy and all the tests I never had any pain in my stomach or liver but after all these tests I started having severe pain in my colon area and in my liver that I could barely stand on my own. Somehow, this medicine didn’t work despite spending nearly lakh on one month treatment. TIBETAN AYURVEDA- Mcleodganj Then in April, we came to know about Dr.Kalsang Deonden in McLeodganj Himachal,India who treats his patients with Ancient Tibetan ayurveda medicine and has thousands of testimonies. When we reached there taking a token was a challenge, people were waiting in the queue from midnight to get morning tokens for medicine. After hearing from the testimonies and relatives of the Cancer patients we believed that we have reached our destination of right alternative medicine. I consulted Doctor, he did his prayers before giving me medicine and checked 1st morning urine through some glass and stick, and said you have Cancer in your stomach, which shocked me. how does he know even before checking my reports? That made me believe him blindly and I started my treatment with full faith in God and his medicine. My health started to improve in 1st month of medicine but then dropped gradually up to a level that I had ‘FULL BLOCKAGE IN MY STOMACH, HAD SEVERE NAUSEA FOR ALMOST 1 MONTH, STARTED TO FAINT WITH PAIN’

on social media @mumcancersupport_gurnoor on Facebook, Instagram & YouTube so that when she grows old enough to understand what she did for me in this toughest phase of my life she should be PROUD and if couldn’t make it she should know that her

Mum did fight well like a Leo. THEN I BROKE UP YET AGAIN & AGREED TO GO FOR CHEMOTHERAPY DESPITE OF ITS SIDE EFFECTS or whatever life span God has given me will value it.

Finally, fainted with pain and full blockage in stomach and landed in the DEATH BED of Hospital in Amritsar on 08 JULY 2021. Where the doctor who knew me literally scolded me to hell that ‘THIS IS HOW YOU WANT TO END YOUR LIFE, IS THIS HOW YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTER TO SEE’ then realised that I don’t want my story to be UNTOLD. Visited World Cancer Care Centre in Jalandhar with all my reports and met a doctor there who was known to explain everything so well, without scaring the hell out of us. He booked the next appointment at DMCHAmerican Oncology Department in Ludhiana where I met Dr. Davinder Paul who is my treating doctor. He explained everything and followed all genetics and biopsy tests which were never asked by any other doctor we consulted. However, he started Oral chemo from 13 July, 2021 onwards. At that time, I wasn’t aware of the pain and insecurity of losing your hair but this time when I’m suffering from the same disease I can relate with their mental state. Therefore, I decided instead that they go wasted in the bin as chemotherapy side effects, I choose to donate them to spread happiness whosoever will receive the wig made with my hair will be happy. HAD FIRST CHEMOTHERAPY ON 04 AUG,2021 till 14 AUG 2021 I’m on double dose of oral chemotherapy medicine where doctors are doing their job and my God will eventually heal me completely. SIDE EFFECTS OF CHEMOTHERAPY-Changes in Taste of Water, Insensitive Taste buds, pain in bones, nerve got black, excessive sweating, body shivering, diarrhoea, swelling on face.

I have completed 6 circles of Chemotherapy followed by 2 more circles to be completed. Although with God’s grace and blessings of my loved ones managed to smashed major part of the tumour which was seen in my latest PET SCAN and reports. Now waiting for the Final reports in January to be declared as Cancer Free. I am sharing “MY CANCER JOURNEY” on my Instagram chefgurvinder.k_cancersur-

vivor to connect with other fellow survivors to inspire, motivate and heal together. I wish to raise awareness about Cancer so that people come forward to get the screening to protect themselves and their loved ones. My daughters support on @mumcancersupport_gurnoor I am sharing my story because due to wrong treatment and no early symptoms my Cancer reached to Stage 4. People should come forward, take their personal health on priority especially Women who tend to care for everyone by neglecting their own self and get the screening if they feel changes in their body to detect this life threatening disease in an early stage. What an amazing determination and courage Gurvinder has . And above all her faith in Dhan Sri Guru Ram Das ji and Darbar Saheb Sri Amritsar . She used to do lot of sewa at Golden Temple and going through the journey during cancer treatment , she visited and paid obedience at Darbar Saheb accompanied by her little cute daughter . Her faith , prayers and family support has given her a new life . We wish her and family a joyful healthy life . Now , it’s passion for Gurvinder to raise the awareness for women health . We wish her good luck.

SMART CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

I

By: Sarang Vengurlekar

n my previous articles I have always touched on automation and how it will assist us in coming years. Taking one step forward let’s look at how technology will assist in building our homes or offices. It is simply known as Smart Construction Technology. There are a variety of devices used during construction, we are not just talking about tools such as drills, circular saws, nail guns but we are talking about the newer generation of tools. Let’s rewind by 100 years where there were no power tools therefore all the work used to be done manually by using hand drills, timber saws, hack saws, using shovels to dig holes, hammers to drive in nails etc. Then came the revolution of power tools which stayed for several decades. Looking at today we are now at the brink of another revolution which will be smarter, more accurate, economical, and quicker. Construction Technology has many aspects which includes large robotic machinery which is controlled by a software, a collection of tools that are innovative and fully automated equipment. 3D printing has been Download Our App

the latest trend and there are companies who are trying to perfect the building of homes using 3D printing. The only difference is that we use plastic strings to print 3D components and these large 3D printers use concrete to pour with perfection. A typical 3D printed home can be built in 48 hours. That is incredible and in terms of money savings it only costs 50% of the traditional home building costs, other benefits are lesser wastage of material and imperfection due to lower skillset workers.

your current location. VR simulators have been used in many other areas such as training pilot’s doctors and even in the defence force, but this technology is now readily available for the general public.

Also in the future you will no longer need to go and view the display homes as this will be possible by using a VR Wearable headset technology as you walk through the home without even setting foot outside of

Let’s look at the technology used by Construction workers, they are now fitted with smart clothing that can detect their body temperature, hear rate and any signs of dehydration. This enabled them to be alerted

AR is another technology which will allow you to view your home without even having the real physical product such as viewing how the tiles will look in your current home, or how would the bed colour fit with your general room décor etc.

when they are at risk and may cause injury to themselves. These smart clothing also looks for and monitor the employees from fatigue or if the employees are intoxicated or are under the influence of narcotics. There are many ways these can be useful.

The smart construction company also deploy site sensors across the whole site to monitor any hazards and to set boundaries to alert unsafe areas. Data from sensors are collected regularly to ensure the workers are

Drones are another way construction company workers no longer need to climb to insane heights just to check the block. They can now simply use drones to view and draw perimeters simply by using a remote control. They are also used as a monitor for employees whilst working at heights at construction site for multi-level dwelling. The most useful job of a drones is to reach locations which are extremely dangerous for construction workers such as bridge over waterways. As mentioned earlier robots are helping hand with repetitive work such as brick laying. There are no human factors that can affect a robot such as getting tired or taking breaks etc. The idea is not to replace a construction worker but to provide them with an aid to increase productivity along with quality.

Companies are now researching and investing more money in Information Technology to be able to gain competitive advantage over the construction companies who simply cannot afford the high-end technology gear. Construction companies who do not invest will soon be out of business. I hope this article has provided enough insight about how our construction may look in the future which is not too far away as other countries have already started this trend. This is the final article for Year 2021 and I would like to wish all my readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope that I will come back with more interesting articles in 2022 as it has always been my pleasure to keep my readers engaged with technology developments.
