NATALIE PENA

COFFEE LOVER // NUTRITIONIST

1. I love coffee! I love coffee so much; I started a podcast called Spirit and Coffee. The podcast is based on the practical use of esoteric wisdom and has nothing to do with coffee.

2. I am a Spiritual Alchemist. I turn pain and suffering into magic, abundance, and love. I believe that the gold we are seeking comes from within.

3. I am a nutritionist. I was overweight for most of my life. Until I finally found someone to teach me how to eat properly. Now, I work to heal people through proper nutrition.

4. I lived in Bangalore, India for a year. During my time in India, I traveled to Sri Lanka,

Thailand, Vietnam. I also traveled to northern and southern India. They mine Emeralds in Rajasthan!

5. I LOVE to travel. I once traveled on the back of a motorcycle across the United States. It took us three weeks to get back home, and we slept in a tent on the side of the road most of the time.

Bonus fact... I have a Black Belt in Kung Fu, which means I’m a disciple (beginner) of the art. I know how to use at least ten different weapons. Our Grandmaster came from the Shaolin temple in China.

AMANDA FLORES

MOM // PHOTOGRAPHER // MODEL

1. Photography is one of my hobbies. To capture the beauty in life with one click is almost magic.

2. I love to model. It lets me express who I truly am. The only thing I edit is the background because I truly love every inch of me and who I am as every one should love themselves. Took me years to find that self love. I am perfectly imperfect.

3. I love to shoot guns, ride quads, fish, camp, and travel. I love getting dirty in the outdoors.

4. If I’m not playing around outside or posing for a shoot I’m hard at work. My dad taught

me to be a strong young independent woman and I’ve lived up to it.

5. My kids are my world. Everything I do is for them.

Bonus fact... Growing up, my dad taught my siblings and I that family is every thing, never cry because it doesn’t change the situation, don’t depend on others, do it yourself. So, on a camping trip while fishing for breakfast, my brothers and their friends bullied me into giving them my favorite and only fishing pole because they had forgotten theirs. It was a Snoopy fishing pole. I had nothing to fish with and instead of crying or sitting there sulking,

I looked around and found some cut fishing wire with a hook on it. Grabbed a stick and made my own little fishing pole. An hour later as my dad whistled for all of us to come back to camp, there I was with more then 10 fish hanging over my shoulder and plopped them right on the tailgate. Mind you, I was only 5 at the time. If you say it can’t be done then you have already failed.

You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it. Clothes allow women the ability to express their uniqueness and beauty. My fashion speaks to who I am, but it isn’t who I am. You have to look deeper than the clothes for that.

When did you first get involved as a model?

For a start in the modeling world, I was late to the game. I didn’t get involved in the industry until I was 18, partially due to the fact that I grew up in a rural Texas town. While in college, I took some modeling and acting classes with Caryn International in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and I had some minor acting parts in local commercials and TV shows. This was pre-Instagram so I had a physical portfolio and comp cards and was emailing digitals.

What or Who inspired you to pursue such a competitive career?

My own curiosity piqued my interest in the industry, but I had some mentors that inspired me along the way. Tiffany Ogle, a former Miss Minnesota and now talk show host, coached me at Caryn’s and convinced me to give the industry a try. The staff at Anderson Model and Talent agency in Amarillo, Texas was also very supportive and helped me develop a more realistic and practical approach. While you quickly realize the chances of becoming a famous supermodel or movie star are slim to none, there is a large market for promotional and commercial models and actors.

I’m sure you have met a lot of talented individuals and/or celebrities along the way. Would you share 1 or 2 of your favorite stories with us?

I hung out with a certain UFC fighter and he immediately flashes his black AmEx to order a drink. Then he tells me how he’s a diehard Republican and loves Donald Trump. He also talked down to me by saying, “you wouldn’t understand because we’re not in the same tax bracket (lol).” That ended up being a pretty short interaction.

Another time, I went on a date with a guy who picked me up in his neon Lamborghini that was previously owned by a Cubs player. It had a TV screen in the center console and he starts playing porn on it super loud. I started cracking up, but switched it to Britney Spears ‘Baby One More Time.’ (I want to mention here that I am 100% happy right now with my non-celebrity husband :)

How has your modeling evolved since you first started? Honestly, I look back at some of my early photos and cringe. Some of them are really bad. Posing, expressions, angles, negative space, hand position, lighting, make up, hair, wardrobe, styling +100 other things factor into what makes a good photo, and lot of these things can only be accomplished through experience (and of course, a good photographer).

If you were forced to choose only one, which emotion, more than any other drives you to stay in these tough careers? Is it joy, anger, desire, passion or pride and why?

I would say motivation. Someone told me a long time ago that you can ways be better, and honestly, it was absolute shit advice for a perfectionist and someone with OCD tendencies like me, but I took it to heart and am always striving to better myself. I like challenges and to think creatively, and modeling is a good juxtaposition to my structured/scientific side.

Which ingredient do you think makes you special and unique as a model in an industry overflowing with new faces and ideas?

My portfolio is extremely diverse as I have done a lot of different styles of shoots and I definitely don’t fit into a standard ‘IG aesthetic.’ I’ve done everything from boudoir, cosplay, wedding, fantasy, fashion, 6+ hours of body paint, actual paint thrown on me, snow shoot in a bikini, etc. While it is very difficult to be original—creatively speaking—people don’t realize that a similar concept can be done in infinite ways. I also prefer a more natural look to my photos so I don’t use excessive filters, FaceTune, or Photoshop.

What has been your biggest challenge as a model? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

My diverse portfolio has actually been a hindrance in some ways because I don’t have one specific style. To an outside viewer, I may appear too eclectic or unmarketable because I’m all over the place, but I view it as a positive in that I can transform into a variety of roles. There will also always be those who don’t like you for whatever reason. I just keep a positive attitude, accept the fact that I’m not suitable for all roles and shoots and move on.

A common phrase as a performing artist is, “you must suffer for your art”. Do you agree with this statement? If so, how have you suffered for your art?

In order to pursue an interest or career to its fullest extent, a significant investment of both time and money is required. When you put

28

a lot of effort into one area of your life, others can definitely suffer. I have had failed relationships, financial difficulties, and poor time management. So yes, I have suffered for my art. Did I have to suffer? Probably not, but then I also would not be where I am today. You have to strike a delicate balance and, very importantly, have a supportive partner.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the modeling business? It has completely changed exposure and accessibility. Today, anyone can post a photo on Instagram or Facebook and say they are a model regardless of experience or agency representation. Direct messaging has made it easier than ever to reach out to models, photographers, hair/make-up artists, etc. It has also widened the definition of a model from an influencer to someone with an OnlyFans account to a regular person reposting and hashtagging a brand’s product. I feel like it’s part of the general societal trend towards larger scope inclusivity and diversity.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I am an orchestra level flute player. I can also blow up a balloon with my nose.

What is the best advice you have received?

“Closed mouths don’t get fed.”

“You do you boo.”

What projects are you currently working on... that you can talk about?

IGTV content, some fun collab photoshoots coming up...

How can fans-to-be follow your modeling career?

Rhinestone Cowboy

It made no sense that I was raised on country music. I lived in the heart of Boulder - a town given to pop music – so it wasn’t as if I heard it in restaurants and shopping malls. Of all places, country music came into my life via Great Britain. Before I was born, England wasn’t enamored with just American rock ‘n roll, it also fell in love with country/western music (as it was called in those days). In London and in the English countryside, Chuck Berry was as popular as Chet Atkins. The English radio is where my mother first heard, and fell in love with, America, American music, and country/ western songs.

Growing up, I couldn’t escape it. It was on the radio in her car as she drove us about town. On the weekends, she played records on our small turntable in the living room. I used to sit on the floor near the coffee table and read the album covers and liner notes. The man she met and married a few years later also loved country/western. They danced to it in the living room and, after a couple scotch and sodas, they sang along. Jim Reeves. Hank Williams. Loretta Lynn. Tammy Wynette. Roger Miller. I’m not so sure I liked country music, but I had to make peace with it since it surrounded me.

In the late 1960’s America came apart at the seams. The war in Vietnam went from bad to worse. In the fall of 1967, Ho Chi Minh and his generals devised a plan to overrun South Vietnam. The Tet Offense - Ho’s grand plan, erupted in late January 1968 and ended about a month later, killing and wounding thousands of Americans and Vietnamese – both North and South, soldiers and civilians.

Most Americans lost their tolerance for the war. As the draft plucked young men from their homes, American campuses devolved into scenes of protest. There were riots, even in Boulder. Tear gas shot at crowds, bricks tossed through store front windows, graffiti scrawled on buildings, marches on campuses that spilled out onto the streets - all were common place. The dissidence reached the highest levels of government. Not long after the Viet Cong’s Tet Offensive, President Lyndon Johnson announced he would not seek a second term in office. He had lost his will to govern.

Amidst this chaos stepped Glen Campbell. He was country, but he wasn’t country. He was authentically southern,

47

but he was somehow also Hollywood. He had country roots and Hollywood looks. He was on TV, then movies, then he had his own variety show. He blended with current pop musicians as well as he blended with country legends.

His songs were soothing, sometimes melancholy, but always such a sure break from the madness that ruled music, politics, and life in general in America. True, other country stars crossed over to pop music even before Glen did. Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash are good examples. Elvis had Vegas appeal, Johnny had gritty, blue-collar, Americana attraction. But Glen Campbell was a true country-to-pop cross over. When Midnight Cowboy was released in 1969, there was no mistaking Joe Buck (Jon Voight’s cowboy) as being modeled after Glen Campbell (not so much the story line, but certainly the image). Ten years later, when Urban Cowboy came out with John Travolta, it was Glenn Campbell who had already blown up the cultural scene and made the possibility of cowboy and cowgirl fashion all the rage in New York and Paris.

I’ll never forget sitting in the backseat of my mother’s white topped, blue Corvair, with the top down, the radio on, and my hair flying in the wind. A news flash about the war would end and one of his songs down, the radio on,

down, the radio on, and my hair flying in the wind. A news flash about the war would end and one of his songs would play. “Wichita Lineman” or “Gentle on My Mind” or “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”. Audrey would turn up the volume and say, “That’s my boyfriend.” Then she’d turn up the volume even more.

When I am driving with the windows down, I can still hear his Arkansas accent mingled with her English midlands accent in the rush of the wind.
