Welcome We are pleased to introduce to you the graduating students from the Graphic Design and Multimedia Department of the College of Design at the University of Dammam. They represent the future of Graphic Design in the Eastern Province and I am pleased to project a very bright future indeed. The Sirb Expo is a showcase of the 5th year Thesis Projects. We have included in this exhibition catalogue mini portfolios of each student’s work. The thesis projects cover a broad variety of topics and utilize the full extent of the students abilities. All of the thesis projects are based on a Thesis paper that required a full range of research and inquiry. The thesis project brief required that they develop a project that addressed their thesis question in a realistic way but utilizing the full extent of their creativity and problem solving skills. The graduating class is deeply indebted to the entire Teaching Faculty of the College of Design for their efforts in review and critique, without their invaluable instruction this book and the work it documents could not exist. Al Anood Al Shahrani The Abser project addresses the problem of saudi internet users who do not read the terms and conditions for the websites and online services they use on a regular basis. There are two reasons most people give for not reading the terms: 1. The terms are very long with multiple pages and 2. The terms are mostly in a very academic English which the users do not understand. The Abser browser plugin will help them understand the terms and conditions in a simple way. The plug in can be added to any internet browsers. The plugin will display a summary of the important points that the user needs to know translated in Arabic, so that they can decide if the website is safe for them or not. This project will help users to actually read the terms they are agreeing to, know their rights and prevent them agreeing to terms that can cause problems.

In this project we had to pick a topic that explores an aspect or a phenomenon in Saudi Arabia. We chose to present the daily routine of the Saudi men after graduating college and starting work. The challenge was using the green screen technique for the first time, so we had to figure how to do everything by ourselves. Also working with kids for weeks was a struggle. But in the end we learned a lot and it was a new good experience.

The project was to design and print an annual report for University of Indiana. We had to create a grid system, tables and charts. I Chose to do a color for each section because it is specialized in art and music.

This project was to present the number nine in an illustration or series of nine illustrations. My concept was the number in the Japanese culture which means Pain. I used Photoshop and Wacom tablet to do it.

04 Pact Coffee and FaceBook

The brief for this project was given by Pact Coffee and FaceBook. The challenge was to use FaceBook as a platform to advertise for Pact Coffee. My concept was to create a FaceBook app to order coffee and deliver it to the customers workplace, since everyone is busy and doesn’t have time to make coffee.

The aim of this project is to do a magazine and print it for any topic. I chose to do a photography magazine and create a simple layout with large pictures to match the concept.

Amal Al-Zhrani Culture Heritage is anything that is considered necessary to pass tradition on to the next generation. Cultural Heritage is passed from generation to another by learning it. The core of culture is how people within a group interact with, use and understand the elements of their heritage. Folklore is an important aspect of any culture, it is the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community passed through the generations by word of mouth, Usually carried by bearers with “Grandparents, Parents, Folklorist” as the primary resources. Much of our cultural heritage is lost with the death of the people whom carry it in their memory or it is forgotten with the passing time. This project focuses on preserving local oral histories by providing students with a toolkit that encourages them to venture into their local stories, to use their family and community as key sources of history, culture, and traditions. The Oral History project relies on interviewing the older generations, and asking them about past events and their reflections upon them. Documenting their stories and memories, will rebuild the link between young generation and their ancestors, by not only focusing on a recording but also living the adventure from first hand interaction and become fully invested, this will give us a sense of fitting and identity. The collected materials, as stories, and memories are not a mere fact of the past; it’s the embodied human truth.

“Arakh” is The teacher’s practical guide to oral history; that offers educators and students the opportunity to learn more about past events and the lifetime stories of the people from their family or community, as they work stepby-step through the process of creating an oral history. The package also includes students journal and questions prompts cards.

Anti-Littering Campaign Address the issue of litter through educating primary students, about the environmental impacts of litter.

A green and healthy environment is in the hand of the people. Achieved by making the people aware of their action and encouraging them to make positive difference in the environments. Targeting the young generation with awareness campaigns resulted in greater effect in the environment and long lasting impact. The awareness campaign will manifestation the bad result of littering and that what you throw yesterday will still be in its place the next day.

Vinne is a Mistborn creature, She happen to live in the era where night is covered with obsidian mist. Mistborn creatures who can fly and see through the mist, in addition to that The mist give them special power and abilities such as climbing, speed and increase their senses,such as sight and hearing.

Arwa H. Alanazi It’s been estimated that one in every ten woman suffers from Postpartum depression and 75% of mother’s experience Baby Blues. New mothers tend to worry about their babies and neglect themselves, leading to frustration later. There is lack of knowledge among Saudi women about the Baby Blues and the need to take care of herself during the postpartum period. A very small number of the surveyed Saudi women actually knew about postpartum Blues and postpartum depression and the majority of them were not familiar with the term Postpartum Blues. Raising awareness among Saudi females is extremely important in order to minimize the risk of serious depression. Supportive relationships with family and friends is a priority in overcoming the Baby Blues, their support and help is important as it will positively affect the mothers sense of wellbeing.

Sharing feelings and experiences with others is essential. Seeking out other women who are dealing with the same transition into motherhood must be considered along with joining groups of new mothers and sharing support, worries, insecurities, and feeling. Saudis women manage their lives through their smartphones and over the Internet, especially social and practical business needs. A practical solution that addresses all of the issues of Postpartum Depression and the Baby Blues, would be an educational phone application to raise awareness in a fun easy way. The phone application would contain information, articles, proper exercise, and proper health system, which all are from guaranteed sources. In addition, a mood tracker that is a therapeutic way to help to treat the symptoms of depression will be provided, and a blog section where mothers are able to express their feelings and share some support. 30


LOGO AND ICONS DESIGN The App name is Arbaen, which means forty, it represent the number of postpartum days in Saudi Arabia Also it’s the common name that Saudi people use to indicate the postpartum period. The Logo was designed based on curvy shapes that represent femininity, promotes the feeling of confidence and love, the movement represent power and energy.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN Worldwide Fund for nature 2015 The requirement of this project was to inspire people to care for our planet. The campaign focuses on the hunting traditions in KSA and it represents three of the most endangered animals all of which are considered to be icons of Saudi Arabia culture. The names of the animals are presented in Arabic calligraphy, which considered an important feature in the culture.

In this project the mission was to build an online store and design it to be userfriendly. The web interface was designed to be simple, clear, and easy to access for different age ranges.

Ashwag Al Khalis Many Saudis who are deaf are not allowed to join universities in Saudi Arabia due to their poor skills reading and writing the Arabic language. The problem starts early with young child, who don’t receive early intervention or language learning programs. Deaf children have the right to learn exactly the same as any other child and the first three to five years of a any child’s life is the most important time period to improve in many skills, including language, knowledge, social and psychological skills. Language skills is the biggest issue faced by deaf children. Over 95% of deaf children have hearing parents which not surprisingly makes the situation harder to for hearing parents to deal with. At the same time there are few educational tools in Arabic: books, games, on-line videos... Etc, available in local stores or on-line that teaches deaf children Arabic sign language or any other skill. Amarat project aims to help and support Saudi parents who have deaf children under the age of 6, by providing an online educational tool designed to teach them the basics of Arabic Sign Language from their home or anywhere with an Internet connection. It includes many tutorials starting with the signs of the alphabet to the basic vocabularies that a child needs to learn at this age. 45

It can affect the quality of life, for instance the ability to read a printed text can become a challenge for many people. The use of medication also increases as people age, Poor medication labeling and difficulty reading the instructions are significant problems that older people and people with low vision face. Research show that the way pharmacists write information is not suitable for adults with impaired vision. The inability to read the medication label accurately may lead to a errors in taking medication. The project focus on designing better medication labeling to help reduce errors caused by poor legibility and readability. This project presents a packaging system that organizes pills for the users into individual packs organized by date and time. Included are designs for stickers to label products that can’t fit into the packs, and a smart phone application to remind the user to take the medicine at the right time.

Trateel Typeface Trateel is Arabic sans serif Kufic inspired typeface. It is more of a collaboration of the modern Kufic script. Boldness and legibility are the main attributes of its letters. The font created from using only a circular shape. The utilizing of rounded corners and edges gave the font a contemporary look. It can be used as headline or as body copy.

Asma Khaled Al-Helali 1440 is a phone application & planning kit including an agenda & wall calendar, designed especially for teenagers. 1440 will encourage productively, teach basic time management skills and motivate teenagers to do their tasks. The application allows the user to add tasks they want and highlight them as important and add alarms to them. Each task can be placed inside a specific category that the user selects. The application uses the “Pomodoro technique” to help teenagers focus on their tasks and eliminate distractions. Included in the 1440 application are connections between users that allow the user to see the number of their friend’s tasks for additional motivation. The agenda & the wall calendar have motivating quotes for each month divider and include monthly views, weekly views and note pages.

I designed it by using the Arabic font “Sama” which I designed before inspired by the old Kufi Arabic writing. In Saudi Arabia the chance of developing Alzheimer’s was doubled every 5 years and it has been found that most of the patients and caregivers are females. Imagine that this disease affects you or one of your beloved ones. Whether you are the patient or the caregiver What will you do and how you will adapt it? Being a caregiver of a patient with Alzheimer’s can be very difficult. During periods of care-giving the caregiver can become stressed and burned out. The most helpful way to minimize the caregivers struggle with Alzheimer’s diseases is to provide information and educate them on the difficulties of care-giving. The project focuses on educating the caregiver and teaching them to manage the stress of dealing with the patient and how to keep themselves healthy. The kit that will include a caregiver guide book, stress balls and a planner to help distribute and arrange time between caregivers. The project will extend to the tech using caregiver, with an application where they can record their best memories with their relative patient and include a planner and a series of educational clips. 87

Concept Al Khobar is a large city located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. So far, it has no identity that makes it stand out from other cities. It has no landmarks, no extraordinary places, and no identifiable symbol. Therefore, my idea is based on the concept of social interaction in the city. Have you ever wondered what happened in a place you were standing on or passing by?! Every single spot or place has a unique story for each person and usually related to different memories. Yuh’hka is an application customized for Al Khobar social media. It’s based on sharing memories and stories behind a place and reading others’ experiences. The application also aims to enhance the value of a color and the message behind it.

Logo explanation : Yuh’hka is an Arabic word means what have been said or told. The logo idea was based on showing what is behind a place’s picture. The three colors represents the three main moods or emotions . The blue color stands for unforgettable memory, the yellow for happy memory and the gray a nostalgic memory.

LOOK UP! Around the city, there will be places or objects colored with one of the three colors. On those objects there will be a question which will make you wonder about this place that you are in.

For example, why is this chair colored? Or why was it placed here? This will encourage people to look for more information about the place or the object they have seen. Also, the object or the spot will include a scan-able barcode to ease knowledge transfer. One of the features of the application is when one

of the three colors dominates an area for 3 weeks with high user input. Pantone.com will make sure to color that place or one of it spots or objects with that color. Over that spot there will be a written sentence that asks people to share that type of emotion.

This project aims to raise awareness amongst Saudi mothers about this problem to help their children identify inappropriate behavior and enhance their perception of personal safety. This project aims to work as a communication tool between the mother and her child to enhance the child’s perception of personal safety through the use of simple illustrations in a picture-book designed for 3 to 5 year olds. The book will demonstrate the terms associated with child personal safety using age appropriate language, that do not cross any limitations set by the culture in general and the parents in particular. Lojain Al-Mubarak Most Saudi people believe in the importance of learning Arabic calligraphy and see it as an interesting subject. The majority of them have shown a positive attitude towards their ability to learn this practice, which indicates a high level of interest and desire to learn Arabic calligraphy. However, workshops and learning resources in Arabic calligraphy are not easily available locally and the workshops that are available present problems, most notably the timings and location. The issue is not a lack of interest in Arabic calligraphy itself, but the absence of learning resources and the unavailability of the required materials and teachers. This project introduces a solution to help the younger generation develop their skills, by creating a self-learning method that teaches the basics of Arabic calligraphy to interested people living in Saudi Arabia. The effectiveness and efficiency of self-learning Arabic calligraphy is supported by examples of professional calligraphers that were 100% self-taught. This method will be available and accessible to people living in Saudi Arabia, it will help them to learn everything they need to excel and provides them with the right tools and materials to get them started.

Mai Antar Haa’ is an activity kit that is designed to help teachers provide interesting activities during history lessons. It’s an activity kit that is graphically well designed using design suitable elements for its target audience, who are intermediate Saudi school students. It includes two main parts: A PDF instruction book that contains different structures of cooperative learning methods that can be applied in different history classes. This book can be downloaded, and it contains instructions in addition to a list of tools that are needed with every activity. An activity kit is also created. It includes all the needed tools mentioned in the book, along with a printed version of it. This activity kit is a set of cooperative learning structures that are translated into an interesting and appealing graphic design language. It provides a helpful guide for intermediate history teachers.

The idea behind this concept was to make sky flakes closer to the consumer by putting it in well-known scenes loved by people.

The Dieline poster The Dieline poster for the top 100 packaging 2014 was made manually. The concept is that everything around us is packaged. First step was creating packages for the poster items. The next step was photography. This step is considered the challenge in this project. The right shot had to be taken so that we can move to the final step. The packs were photographed after placing them on a white board. Finally, Photoshop was used to add typography and the final effects to the poster, creating the final look.

Koumi is a special font designed based on the Arabic Kufic font. Font characters are built using small triangles with 45 degree. Creating a balanced form using this base was a challenge.Letters were designed according to these triangles in their isolated form. Numbers and punctuation marks were designed using the same base as the Koumi font. This font can be used in logos and headlines etc.

Second part of this project was to design a logo for an archaeological site located in Saudi Arabia. The one I choose is Madain Saleh. It’s a pre-Islamic archaeological site located in the Al-Ula sector, within the Al Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia. The logo was based on the Arabic Koumi font. Finding a simple yet strong typographic logo was the challenging point of this project.

Each activity would improve their artistic taste and give them the benefit of pride in accomplishment. The project contains a small package of activity cards, that would let the user take it anywhere (ex: work place), putting it in a pocket or purse, not taking up much space. The cards are divided into different kind of art activities such as: drawing, coloring, pasting, and scraching. All cards are the same size, and each one has its own illustration [and explanation], that is related to the same concept, the participant would follow its lines (draw, color, etc). The cards could be used as a decoration piece for work space. In addition to the cards, the package includes mini size of art making tools (mini pens, coloring pencils, engraving knife, etc). The product will allow the participant to try out many different forms of art, with small projects that won’t make them afraid of engaging in a new experience. The variation of the activities would make it suitable for anytime, depending on what the participant prefers to do each time. It has a variation of levels; the activities will be combined together in the advanced levels. The size will make it easier to satisfy them that they can finish each activity without taking too much time or losing interest. The user benefits by focusing on making art, calming down and relieving stress, gaining skills, having the satisfaction of accomplishment and the pride of completing an artwork. 177

Munirah Al-Abdulqader The problem of waste management in Saudi Arabia has grown with rapid industrialization, a high population growth and fast urbanization to the point where more trash is produced in KSA than any other member of the GCC. Landfills in Saudi Arabia are expected to reach capacities within the next 10 years. Changing peoples’ attitude is difficult, but educating children and helping them learn about trash and it’s cultural and environmental issues is a simple way to start to make changes in society. It is easy to teach children about recycling and reducing the amount of waste, and when children have learned to be concerned about the environment they will in turn educate their family in an indirect way. Children in their first years have only the example of their own family. As they start to go to school the world of their experience grows bigger and they start to learn from the school more than the family. So from elementary school we can educate children about recycling in a fun and interesting way.

Nouf I. Al-Sada Children’s dental anxiety and fear of dental treatment has been a matter of concern for many years. Dental anxiety in children is considered as a major issue in Saudi Arabia for both the dentist and the young children. The dental anxiety often implies a stressful psychological situation. A high percentage of young children have suffered from dental fear during their life. When children are anxious they cause problems not only for themselves but also for their dentists, because they are uncooperative during their visits and they feel panic and uncomfortable. Understanding the reasons behind the children’s anxiety and the impact of the dental atmosphere, and focusing on how to manage the children’s fear according to psychological methods can help to minimize the negative effects of the situation. As a result, this project is targeting young children and the outcome builds on a system of rewards through the collecting of stickers an affective way to help children change their attitude toward difficult situations. This project helps children beat the fear of the dentist and helps them to overcome their fear of the dentist’s clinic, encouraging them to visit the dental clinic, and supports the dentist work. The Assistant Crew is a system designed in a way that it could be added easily to existing dental clinics in Saudi Arabia.

These skills fall under the category of self regulation, the group of skills that are needed to foster school performance and mastery orientation. This will be achieved by applying a three step plan. First: educating parents about the importance of self regulation by providing learning resource. Second: helping parents in their journey to raise self regulated child by providing practical and helpful tools : Basic activities and advanced planners. Those tools target children in two age ranges: 6-8 years old and 10-12 years old. Kauafeh & Abdulaziz (2011) define the terminology of learning as “a change happened into the human behavior while growing where practice and knowledge role the performance factors” . Similarly, Geats (1986) as cited in Kauafeh & Abdulaziz (2011) Defined it as “a method to discover the ways that can fill our needs and help us reach our goals using problem-solving method”. Also, it will contain children storybook written in a suitable way that matches children reading abilities. Also, the project will develop a text generator website to generate any text into a simple text that children with dyslexia able to read done by a simple way which is changing the color of the letter that has a different sound. That will make the teaching process easier for the teacher and the involvement of parents in the educational process better and Also to help designer who wants to design for this particular target audience and enrich the Arabic content.
