Virtual Golf & 20 Jobs Arrive in Aberdeen
The first floor will have a bar and restaurant and five golf simulators.
Gamola Golf Ltd started life as a way for Mr Graeme Masterton to fund his way through College, today Gamola Golf Ltd is a successful online business with over 30,000 customers which is due to open a £1.5 million centre in Aberdeen where its clients will be able to buy their products and enjoy a round on a simulation of an elite course. The project is due to create over 20 jobs.
The complex will feature a 4000sq ft golfing goods outlet on the ground floor along with a demo area where players can have clubs fitted.
Gamola said these will provide “virtual” access to Carnoustie Links, the Ailsa course at Turnberry and The Belfry in Warwickshire. The first floor facilities are due to open in early July. The decision to open a bricks and mortar store after starting out online flies in the face of predictions that much retail trade will migrate online.

The project had exceptional constraints, city centre location, historical prestigious granite building and unusual existing floor construction. Retention of the external facade, existing floors and the creation of an additional floor area in the internal courtyard was challenging for both the designers, cost consultant and the contractor. Despite this the entire team worked in harmony with the client to achieve an excellent city centre facility to the golfing public and the community in general

40 Extra Care Flats - Red Bank House The project is to construct 40 extra care flats for ‘Affordable ‘ rent for the elderly and to replace the previous care home on the site which was no longer fit for purpose. The new building has been designed around the specific requirements of the end user and intends to promote pride in the scheme itself and the area in which it sits. The projects is funded partial through a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency and Bury Council with the finished building being owned and managed by Six Town Housing. The residents will also benefit from specialist Adult Care services and will be a designated’ Extra Care’ facility. The 0.48 hectare site is located approximately 5 km to the south west of Bury Town Centre, within the mainly residential area of Radcliffe. The development is well serves by public transport as there is a main bus route along the B6292 Ainsworth Road providing direct access to Radcliffe and Bury. We have consulted Adult Care services in the design of the scheme to create an Extra Care sheltered housing scheme for older people. The scheme will comprise 38 no. 2 bed and 2 no. 1 bed self contained apartments with flexible communal spaces, including a communal garden and parking. There will be areas for dining, assisted bathing, a communal kitchen along with a large lounge area and staff facilities, bistro, hairdressers and spa area. The lounge will be flexible in the respect that it can be sub divided and the spaces used for visits from GP’s, chiropodists and for community activities. It is also envisaged that the communal facilities will also be made available to people living in the surrounding area with the scheme creating a ‘community hub’. The nature of the development promotes a diverse and sustainable community with all residents having access to the public facilities with the scheme and the jobs created from it.
The building will be designed to meet very high energy and performance standards (BREEAM Excellent) with carbon emissions significantly reduced by increasing the building insulation, using low energy (LED) lighting, solar photovoltaic panels and water saving devices throughout. The materials used in the main building will be Green Guide rated. The advice of an ecological consultant has been sought to assist with the retention and enhancement of existing ecological features demonstrating a commitment to improve the biodiversity of the whole site. Exceptional Design Features The development will provide high quality retirement apartments in one building form. The apartments are fully self contained and are designed to exceed ‘Lifetime Homes’ principles. Each apartment has its own front door and privacy is a key concern, apartments are located away from communal and heavily trafficked areas. The internal wide corridors give access to lifts and communal areas. The arrangement of the wings with the communal facilities acting as a hinge at one corner makes the most of the site and creates an attractive street frontage on Lowe Road. The entrance and lobby are obvious and positioned for minimum travel routes to local amenities. Visitors and wheelchair assessable car parking is kept tucked away at the rear of the building rather than dominating the street frontage, this is safer in highways terms for vehicles as they do not have to reverse directly onto the road. The car park is securely enclosed and accessed by electronic gates. The car park is arranged to incorporate a turning head (sweep) large enough to facilitate service deliveries and refuse collection.
munal areas are semi public with invited local community, visitors and professional visitors. The residential areas are accessed through a secure door entry system. Key external areas are covered by CCTV systems. The front entrance are inviting and un-intuitional, therefore no gates, this is not a ‘gated community’. The design requires short travel distances from the furthest flats to the communal hub areas. The three storey building will provide a focal point and landmark to the mass of nearby housing. The scale is suitable for the location opposite a generous open green space. Lifetime Homes The building has been designed with a view to providing fully accessible and DDA complaint apartments and communal spaces. Entrances have level access with doors and lobbies sized to accommodate wheelchair users. Doors will be mostly glazed with easy open and close hinges. The facility will be staffed 24/7 with 8 members of staff on site at any one time. The building is fully DDA complaint and 4 No. ground floor apartments will have rise and fall kitchen units to accommodate the needs of wheel chair users as well as well as a wet room rather than a standard bathroom facility. Sustainability The new build extra care units are designed to meet BREEAM excellent. The nature of the development promotes a diverse and sustainable community with all residents having access to the public facilities within the scheme and the jobs created from it. It is anticipated local construction jobs as well as local enterprise opportunities will be created within the bistro and hair dressing salon as well as during the construction phase.

Accessibility The site is relatively flat and getting around the building on the footpaths and from the disabled parking spaces in a wheel chair will be easy. The whole of the scheme is level access with generous circulation space. Vehicle dropping off at the entrance is achievable and all flats are fully accessible. The standard achieved is better than Lifetime Homes with specific detail design for retirement living at an ‘affordable’ rent. Community Cohesion The development is a much needed facility within the Radcliffe area and will enhance the area and create a hub for the local community. The design is a high quality supported housing scheme that makes effective use of the land. The design of the scheme welcomes residents and the local community alike with a non-institutional feel, The design allows for people to continue with their daily lives and activities as if they were living in their old home. Resident will be able to relate to the size, scale and ambience of the spaces created as a continuation of the spaces they have grown up in. It is hope that thus scheme will help create a sense of local pride and civic identity in Radcliffe.

the scheme itself and the area in which it sits. Extra care needs will be provided following an assessment of need by trained health care professional after which tailored care packages will be designed and delivered to the residents on a low, medium and high care needs basis. The building is a bespoke design prepared from our project brief and designed with a view to providing fully accessible and DDA complaint apartments and communal spaces. The funding application was a first for Six Town Housing and the allocated funding was one of the highest amounts to be granted for this type of project. In addition, the project brought together a range of partners to develop the concept through the stages of construction and post construction management of the building and provision of care facilities. The project build is due for completion during May 2012 after which the allocation of the apartments and the on-going management of the scheme will be undertaken by Six Town Housing. The building will provide extra care accommodation for elderly residents thereafter and will provide a valuable asset for years to come.

Great Dixter Historic House Refurbishment The Great Dixter Estate covers over 55 acres of beautiful East Sussex countryside and is run by the Great Dixter Charitable Trust. Parts of the Estate date back to the mid15th century, and it was until his death in 2006 the home of world-renowned gardener Christopher Lloyd. It attracts over 45,000 visitors each year. Following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Estate trustees commissioned a series of construction projects to carry out building conservation and improve the visitor experience; combining a unique mix of sustainable, energy efficient solutions that blend in with the site’s historic environment. Crofton has been appointed by the trustees to undertake full mechanical & electrical design across 3 stages. Package A (Jan 2010 – Jan 2011) - The main house. The first phase was to repair the historic timber frame of the north front of the medieval house. During these works, alterations to existing electrical services were carried out. One stipulation of the HLF grant was for the provision of a fire alarm system, and to ensure minimal disruption to the building’s existing fabric a radio operated system was deemed to be most appropriate. The exact position of all smoke detectors and other devices were agreed with the client, and to ensure minimal visual impact, each detector was individually coloured to blend in with interior decoration. Fire alarm control equipment was subsequently located discreetly in nonpublic areas. Package B (July 2010 – July 2011) - Redevelopment of Dixter Farm buildings This encompassed the conversion of Nathaniel Lloyd’s 1910 farm buildings adjacent to the Estate. These provide accommodation for resident apprentice gardeners from around the world, much-needed administration space and an educational facility for horticultural courses and school activities. The package involved the design and implementation of a ground source heat pump system to serve under floor heating and domestic hot water to the existing
farm outbuildings. An array of pipework was buried underneath a new Netlon grass car park for visitors to the gardens, to extract heat from the earth. The ground source heat pump then raises the temperature of the medium to a useful level via the refrigeration cycle. Package C (Sep 2011 – Apr 2012) Repair of outbuildings and main house heating. The final phase of works incorporates the repair of the 15th century threshing barn and 19th century Oast House. A new heating system with a biomass boiler was designed to provide for the main house. This kind of system is considered to be almost carbon neutral if transport costs can be contained and is one of the most energy efficient and effective solutions for a historic building. The boiler’s fuel source will be sustainable, locally sourced wood chip.

Davis Builders uses specialist skills to restore historic Great Dixter Kent-based renovations specialist Davis Builders has completed a key phase of work at historic 15th Century country house and garden Great Dixter. The firm’s highly skilled carpenters and joiners have been working on a phased package of works at the estate in Northiam, designed in part by Sir Edwin Lutyens and famous for its gardens created by the late Christopher Lloyd. Davis has now finished a major section of the works to deliver an education centre housed in former farm buildings. The centre will allow Great Dixter to share its horticultural expertise through visits by local school children and via adult education courses and seminars. Attention to detail on the project was paramount, with large amounts of timber work including wood panelling and flooring involved to create a stunning space reminiscent of the main Grade II listed house. Brick repointing and roofing experts from Davis have renovated the exterior of the farm buildings, which also house staff accommodation and administration offices. At the main house, parts of which date back to the 1470s and to which Lutyens added a new wing in the early 20th Century, Davis has begun work on the next phase of work which includes a brand new heating system throughout the main house as well as renovations to the Great Medieval Barn, installation of a biomass boiler and extension of the coffee shop area with the construction of a loggia. Davis has had to record every detail of timber repair in the barn, replacing individual members and sections which are cut in to secure the structure and integrity of the building. More than 20% of the oak used in the process has come from the Great Dixter estate and has been sympathetically fashioned and cut by joiners from Davis. Once completed visitors to Great Dixter will be able to watch as staff use traditional techniques to create garden furniture and tools in the barn using materials from the estate. Early stages of the Dixter project saw Davis complete refurbishment work on the house itself, replacing structural beams on the famous frontage and porch and renovating existing windows and rendered panels. Nick Charlton, Director of Davis Builders, said: “Working at Great Dixter has allowed us to showcase how a smaller, independent building company can provide the skills and personal approach needed on a highly detailed and sensitive high value renovation project. “Our carpenters and joiners have brought skills passed down through several generations to Great Dixter to help preserve the estate’s heritage and create modern and engaging new facilities.”

Highbridge Medical Centre The town of Highbridge in the Somerset Levels offers a snapshot of modern life and medical care in the UK today. Identified as a “hot spot” for teenage pregnancy and with a higher than average mortality rate health professionals are under increasing pressure to find ways of providing quality patient care. AWW were appointed by Highbridge Medical Centre to design an extension to their existing premises, to provide additional consulting and treatment rooms to meet increasing demand. The higher than average population growth in Highbridge over the last 10 years, means that services are under increasing pressure to provide quality services for the growing population. Health provision and health education have both been identified by the council as key issues in one of the most deprived areas in the district. The much needed extension to the medical centre saw the addition of 6 new consulting rooms and 2 new treatment rooms. The new medical centre is now well placed to provide quality care to meet those issues and is able to offer a wide range of services including minor surgery and diabetes and asthma clinics. One of the key factors in the build was the need to ensure that operational capability was unaffected throughout the construction phase. Through a phased construction plan, worked up in conjunction with the users, the team were able to minimise the impact on both the patients and staff even during the difficult overhead reconfiguration.
there are plans now to refurbish the original building to reflect the work that has gone into the new extension. Attic space, previously used for storage, was reconfigured to provide a new inhouse training facility for staff.

Matrix Solutions UK Ltd was appointed as Main Contractor on the scheme as the centre remained fully operational throughout the construction. Matrix worked closely with AWW and Joanne Farnworth from Highbridge Medical Centre to ensure that staff and patients were not inconvenienced and the project was completed successfully. Matrix Solutions UK Ltd believe in working in close partnership with local supply chain partners and using local expertise and knowledge forming long term customer partnerships.
Careful consideration had to be paid to the low lying ground as poor natural drainage required detailed dialogue with the Land Drainage Board to secure planning permission. “The team element of this build has been clear throughout. Close communication with all the parties and mutual support has enabled us to produce a building that will help meet the needs of the community for decades to come” said Project Architect, David Perkin. Hospital (Refurb) Prestwich Hospital McGuinness Unit Young people with mental health problems in the North West are to benefit from the development of a brand new centre costing £10 million. Clinical staff and service managers at Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMW) are working with architects to create a new centre that will look after teenagers from 13 to 18 years with mental health problems. The new centre will provide specialist treatment for young people with severe mental health problems including; eating disorders, self-harming behaviour, mood disorders, psychosis and poor coping skills such as misusing substances, and will be located in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. The centre will offer more young people, their families or carers, from Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan, support to manage their mental health conditions in an attractive, modern and therapeutic environment. The new centre will house the specialist inpatient adolescent service and community services previously based at ‘The McGuinness Unit’ in Prestwich and ‘Cloughside College’ - a co-educational provision providing education for young people admitted to GMW’s two adolescent units situated on its Prestwich site. Cloughside College plays a vital role in
the rehabilitation of young people receiving care as an inpatient by allowing them to continue in education with students sitting exams to achieve accreditation in a wide range of subjects. The college provides students with full time education promoting their self-esteem and allowing them to reach their full potential, which makes a huge difference to their future academic success and long-term recovery. The college complements the work of the specialist inpatient adolescent service with highly dedicated and skilled staff who encourage their students to take responsibility for their personal development and equip them for their immediate future with support individually tailored for each student. The existing buildings, which are no longer fit for purpose, will be demolished to be replaced with the brand new centre. The new two-storey centre will have 20 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms in a state of the art inpatient unit, with a day area for patients attending assessments, therapy, support groups and consultations. It will also include a welcoming reception area, a visitor’s suite for families, an art room, activity areas, laundry and kitchen facilities, offices for staff, outside spaces including courtyards and gardens as well as a college with a sports and recreational hall and bespoke learning environments for inpatients to attend. GMW has appointed Integrated Health Projects (IHP) as the Principal Supply Chain Partner to design and build the new two-storey building.
May 2013. Gill Green, Director of Nursing and Operations for GMW, said: “The condition of the clinical environments has a massive influence on how patients feel. Research has even suggested that recovery times can improve when patients are cared for in an attractive and therapeutic environment. “This is equally true in the care of people with mental health problems, so dramatically improving the unit where we treat young people with a range of mental health conditions will have a real impact on their recovery and mental wellbeing. “The new centre will allow us to focus intensively on children and young people with the most severe mental health problems giving rapid access to the multidisciplinary team, delivering complex assessments and treatments and providing a comprehensive care package that will enable young people to recover and live a normal life. “The centre will be the base for staff with specialist knowledge of young people’s mental health needs and will create a pool of expertise which we hope will allow leaders in young people’s mental health services across Greater Manchester, and also develop research on improved treatments by working with patients with rare conditions. “As well as providing inpatient treatment, staff will also provide information, support and advice to clinicians working with young people in the community to enable young people to be treated in their homes and remain in their local areas.
Work started in mid-March 2012 with the new building expected to be complete by

Measured Term Contract NHS Shared Business Services - creating value for NHS Trusts through better procurement practice Measured Term Contracts – National Framework Agreement The Measured Term Contracts framework for the NHS is a national agreement, put in place by NHS Shared Business Services to provide NHS Trusts across England with access to mechanical, electrical, building and painting and decorating services. During this period of immense change there is a real need for the NHS and other public sector organisations to have clarity and efficiency around the services they employ. NHS Shared Business Services’ (NHS SBS) collaborative procurements are partnership oriented in approach, designed to identify the mutual needs and terms required by the NHS and identify and award a strong supplier base to support these. This official procurement process provides each Trust with a reliable service that complies with EU public sector procurement law, while providing a range of service options and the flexibility to select the suppliers that they wish to work with to develop specific arrangements. This approach can also be advantageous to suppliers who are equally affected by the current economic climate, offering sustainable relationships and access to a significant public sector customer base through a single accredited procurement channel. Measured term contracts, by definition, involve a regular flow of work packages for contractors to carry out across specified properties, demographic areas and
time periods. They allow both parties flexibility, while advocating the set up of partnership agreements that support medium to long term commitment between the parties, creating an opportunity to monitor and encourage continuous improvement, utilise benchmarking data and create a more stable evolving relationship. The framework is split into four disciplines mechanical, electrical, building and painting and decorating within ten regional lots to ensure the capacity to deliver a high quality, localised service across the country. This has allowed smaller and single specialism firms to operate alongside suppliers with a national footprint who may offer a number of service lines.

Thirteen suppliers are currently on this framework: Alfred Bagnall and Sons, Bell Decorating Group, Vale Decorators UK, Cranegates, Cruden Property Services, Excell UK, SSE Contracting, Garside Laycock Limited, Hays Electrical and Building Services, Lymec Engineering Services, MITIE Property Services UK, Procare Building Services and Seddon Property Services. These suppliers have proven themselves to be best in class across a range of evaluated criteria and have been independently validated by Trusts representatives from the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust and Salford Royal
NHS Foundation Trust. The framework runs until January 2016, with ongoing management to ensure the specification and suppliers remain appropriate and that the potential gains from such an agreement are being fully realised. Additional service options such as the identification of building cost savings and advice on current and future legislation requirements and environmental/sustainability issues should enable the optimisation of property portfolios to maximise effectiveness and added value. The principle behind measured term contracts presents options for linking objectives that can positively impact and align working practices to bring about relationship and service improvements that directly contribute to the accomplishment of Trusts bespoke Key Performance Indicators. It is this sort of public private partnership approach will become increasingly important in ensuring both parties meet financial and other targets. In seeking to identify and address the current pressures upon the public sector, suppliers will be well placed to ensure their long term success while fulfilling these wider strategic concerns.

The aim of the project is to revitalise the historic 44-acre park, encourage even more people to visit, and make it an attractive setting for new activities and events.
HLF’s Parks For People fund awarded the project £71,500 for Stage 1 development last year – matched by £74,700 from the City Council – and agreed in principle to award full Lottery funding of £2.56million once a finalised programme has been approved. That sum will be matched with £2.67million from Aberdeen City Council. The City Council has appointed Edinburgh-based Scott Wilson Ltd as lead

And in a further boost for the popular park, Aberdeen City Council will be able to invest a further £834,000, thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of Lorna Doreen Russell. Mrs Russell, who lived at Banks O’ Dee nursing home, had a passionate love of the David Welch Winter Gardens and, with her husband, spent many happy hours there. She died in April 2009, making the City Council a beneficiary of her estate, for the sole purpose of “extending, improving or otherwise refurbishing the Winter Gardens or providing other facilities at the park”. Officials are studying a range of schemes
on which the bequest could be spent, including landscaping, modernising the play area, upgrades to the restaurant and work on the park’s greenhouses – and a way will also be found to recognise Mrs Russell’s generosity and love for the park. Housing and Environment Committee convener Councillor Aileen Malone said: “Duthie Park is close to the hearts of all Aberdonians and known across the world, so I am delighted that we have the chance to make such a significant difference with the help of the Lottery and Mrs Russell’s benevolence. “The restoration work will see so many original features revived and I hope as many people as possible come along to the open day to see what is proposed and to have their say.” Vice-convener Councillor Mark McDonald said: “Returning the park to its Victorian splendour will be a real achievement and something in which to take great pride. The park is already one of

the glories of Aberdeen and our work to make it even better will be appreciated by many generations to come. ”I would also like to pay tribute to Mrs Russell. She expressed her deep appreciation of the park in her will and I am sure that she would be proud to see the bequest being put to such good use in her city.” Lead consultant Nigel Hackett, of Scott Wilson Ltd, commented: “We were delighted to hear of Mrs Russell’s extremely generous donation and welcome the improvements to the Winter Gardens that will accompany the Heritage Lottery Funded improvements to the wider Duthie Park grounds.” Duthie Park is one of the most popular parks in Scotland, with over half a million visitors every year. It was bequeathed to the city by Miss Elizabeth Crombie Duthie in remembrance of her brother and uncle and was opened in 1883 by Princess Beatrix. Its historical significance as one of the finest examples of a late Victorian public park has led to its inclusion in Historic Scotland’s Inventory of Designed Landscapes and Gardens. The restoration and reconstruction of some of the lost features will be inspired by old written and photographic sources.

Pembroke College Student Accommodation Pembroke College, founded in 1347 by Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke, is the third oldest of the Cambridge colleges and the first to have its own Chapel. The new quad and buildings under construction at Pembroke College will be linked to Pembroke’s existing main site via a bridge across Brewer Street. This allows a mixture of living, teaching, socialising and performing spaces in the new complex – all available for easy use by the whole College community. On arrival in the new quad there is a feeling of great openness, with an outside space almost the size of Chapel Quad owned partly by Pembroke and partly by
neighbouring Campion Hall, with a grove of trees next to the boundary wall. The Pembroke quad cascades down to ground level and incorporates several terraced garden areas before the ground level lawn is reached. Balancing the need to be sensitive to their context, in terms of history and architecture, has resulted in buildings which are practical and classic and designed so as not to jar with the surrounding area. Pembroke students and alumni always comment on the College’s strong sense of community. Since the last war, generations of students had to spend at least one academic year living outside the College, yet many say they felt part of the College at all times. With that strong feeling of belonging, it seems only right to make it possible for undergraduates to enjoy a further year living in College accommodation, so as to get the best out of Pembroke.

Until the opportunity arose to build the new complex, this could only be dreamt of. With these new buildings, a whole year of undergraduates will be able to enjoy living on the College’s extended main site in en suite rooms, while post-graduate students and visiting academics will also be able to benefit from more College accommodation, including a number of flats for those with families. While they will have the benefit of the cafeteria and other new facilities on their doorstep, the occupants of this new accommodation will not have to leave Pembroke to reach the Library, Hall, the new Bar, the JCR or the MCR, which will all be just a short walk away, over the bridge. To be able to integrate Pembroke’s community in this way is truly transformational for the College and allows it to match the accommodation on offer from the majority of other Oxford Colleges. The 96 new en suite bedrooms, so close to the new auditorium and cafeteria, will also greatly enhance the College’s conference opportunities in vacation time.

Raasay House Construction of the ambitious European Marine Science Park is underway at Oban in Argyll. Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) are investing £7.5m to create the first phase - which will take advantage of significant opportunities in marine science, marine biotechnology and renewable energy. The 20,000 sq ft of office and laboratory space will support businesses in Scotland’s growing Life Sciences and Energy sectors and has the potential to support up to 125 jobs.
in an outstanding marine environment. Energy, Enterprise and Tourism Minister Fergus Ewing said: “The Scottish Government and its enterprise agencies are working hard to retain Scotland’s position as the most competitive environment for business in the UK. “The £7.5 million European Marine Science Park will create a European Centre of excellence in marine science, research and development at Dunstaffnage, which will strengthen the local economy through attracting new jobs and investment to the area.
The site of the development, Dunstaffnage near Oban, is already an internationally recognised centre of excellence for marine science, with the Scottish Marine Institute being home to the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS), and the European Centre for Marine Biotechnology. These provide marine science research and education as well as incubation space for new and growing businesses.
“I am delighted that work has started on phase one of this ambitious Highlands and Islands Enterprise project - this brings us another step closer to making this major infrastructure project a reality for this community and local businesses.” Douglas Cowan, Area Manager for HIE, said: “The European Marine Science Park is a landmark project for Argyll and is of national significance. It builds on our strong reputation in marine sciences and will lead to more businesses employing more people in high value jobs, creating greater prosperity for north Argyll and the wider area.”
Robertson, the infrastructure, support services and construction group, are now on site working on phase one, which will provide a supportive atmosphere for businesses to continue to grow in a highspecification sustainable building, located
Andrew Cowan, Group CEO of Robertson said: “Robertson are delighted to be working in partnership with Highlands and Islands Enterprise to deliver this significant infrastructure project for Argyll. We have considerable experience in de-
livering high profile public sector projects throughout Scotland and we are thrilled to add the European Marine Science Park to that prestigious list.” “As part of our commitment to local communities we have already held an open evening for the public and suppliers and we shall endeavour, where possible, to engage with the local supply chain.” SAMS Director, Professor Laurence Mee, commented: “With the success of the European Centre for Marine Biotechnology at SAMS we have demonstrated how the private sector can make innovative use of the scientific knowledge and unique natural assets available in Argyll. HIE’s European Marine Science Park will build on this, allowing entrerpreneurs to spin out companies that will bring new jobs to the region and create a knowledge-based society that will resonate nationally and internationally. This is a fantastic development and a huge vote of confidence from HIE, the private sector and the Scottish Government.” In August 2010, the HIE Board approved an investment of £7.5m to create the first phase of the Science Park on the site next to SAMS at Dunstaffnage. HIE will contribute £4.5m of its own grant-in-aid budget from the Scottish Government, and has attracted the remaining £3m towards this first phase from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

Shelton Hospital Health Centre
has been a shift from treating people with mental health problems in institutions to treating people where possible closer to home.
inpatient provision is at Shelton Hospital and the physical environment is updated requiring modernisation to meet modern healthcare needs.
Modernising Mental Health Services Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.
In line with this, a key part of the Trust mental health services strategy is to address the long term requirements for the provision of such services in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
With a move towards care focused on the needs of the service user closer to home, this project is planning and implementing the provision of new acute mental health facilities on the site adjacent the Shelton Hospital.
Over the past 50 years in Britain, there
It is a complex task addressing service change, the physical constraints of Shelton Hospital, together with its history and associated stigma, changing population trends and modern healthcare needs. The project has two strands of work which are interlinked. Shropshire Workforce Redesign. This covers a range of elements but the overall aim of this strand recognises that evidence based research recommends a preferred model of healthcare at home. To support this, care pathways need to be changed and staff training amended and updated to meet modern standards and expectations for in-patient care. Redesign of Inpatient Buildings. Current
After a three month consultation period, In January 2011 the Boards of Shropshire County and Telford and Wrekin PCTs, agreed the overall plans to strengthen community mental health services and build a new inpatient facility. The new facility will be a cutting-edge design and provide 80 beds in one-storey, 16 bed blocks. Although there will be fewer beds, over the course of the next 18 months there will be an increase in the number of clinical staff in the community to provide care where the service users want it - which is at home. It will be a much more relaxed environment than the current Shelton Hospital facility which was built in 1843 and is one of the country’s last Victorian asylums. The Ground Breaking Ceremony for the new build was held on 23 March 2011 and the contractor BAM, started the building work on the £46 million project apace. Shelton re-development will be more than just new buildings; the focus of this scheme is on modernising services not re-development. The new build is taking place on land to the south of the cricket ground at the back of the present Shelton Hospital. It will be an in-patient village. The term ‘village’ is being used as the Wards and other amenities will be built around a ‘village green’. The wards will be mixed gender, however every effort has been put in place to make sure that there is separation between bedrooms, bating areas and also there will be separate day lounges as well as communal. All bedrooms will be en-suite so privacy is maintained at all costs. There will be a bistro to replace the current restaurant and a library that will also have computers which the in-patients will have access to. The new build should be operations by Summer 2012.

St Andrew School Congresbury is a village and civil parish in Somerset. It is situated in the unitary authority of North Somerset, and in 2001 had a population of 3,400. The local authority responsible for education is North Somerset Council. Congresbury has a pre-school and St Andrews Primary School.
A prefabricated timber frame for the new building was specified in response to the rapid programme; there was a requirement for the timber in the building shell to be carefully detailed to comply with the Environment Agency’s ‘Flood Resilient Construction’ as the school sits in a flood plain only 6m above sea level.
The limited budget encouraged considerations as to how each part of the school can work hard to add as much value as possible. For example, the corridor linking the three classrooms has been designed with full height windows and low level window seats so that pupils and teachers can sit there. Outside there is a plaza with views to trees beyond; the space will be more than a corridor as it can be used to support classroom and plaza-based activities. Completion is due in early 2012, with the contractor Willmott Dixon.
Roofing
St Andrews School is currently undergoing a £2m single storey extension and alterations are being made to the existing building.
The new building will create a link between the two existing school buildings providing three additional classrooms, the enclosure of an existing open courtyard to create a teaching support space, and new toilet and kitchen facilities in an existing hall that will enable the school to offer the hall space for use by the local community.

gest increase we have seen is in midweek bookings for the business market.
Stonehaven lies on the main road and rail routes, fifteen miles south of Aberdeen.
The floor space of the lounge will be significantly increased with the removal of the existing toilets. It is expected that the work will be completed by April.
The feedback we have had from some business travellers is that they want to get out of the city to relax,” he added.
This proximity and its good transport links have ensured that Stonehaven has benefitted from the oil wealth generated by its northern neighbour over the past quarter century. But despite this the town has maintained its own very distinctive character and charm. Stonehaven’s harbour and the old town lying behind it are full of character and interest. The Ship Inn was built overlooking the harbour in 1771, predating the spiky-towered Town House which was built in 1790. The Inn was acquired by Simon Cruickshank in May 2004. Mr Cruickshank has many years experience in the licensed trade, and also owns Troupers Bar in Barclay Street. Work is now complete on a £200,000 ground floor extension at The Ship Inn. The investment comes on the back of a very successful period of trading for the inn, with a 19% increase in room trade and an 8% growth in food sales during the past year.
“This is a significant project for The Ship Inn and one which we have been waiting to undertake for some time. The hospitality sector has been put under enormous pressure as a result of the current economic climate, as eating out and holidays are usually the first things to be cut from the household budget. However, we are bucking the trend and feel confident about spending more money to make further improvements to our facilities. “Over the past seven years the floor space of the restaurant has been extended by 50% and we have increased the number of rooms we have from five to 11 and all of these are en-suite. We have done a lot to upgrade the hotel, but the new extension will be significant because it is a piece of work that has been planned for a considerable length of time.”
Building work on the new extension started at the end of last year and the inn’s owners say it will “result in major improvements to customer facilities”.
He said that increases in occupancy rates were “encouraging and comforting” especially given “that 700 additional rooms have been created in Aberdeen in the last two years”.
Owner Simon Cruichshank said: “The main scope of the project is to build new downstairs public area toilets, followed by

Minister for Public Health and Sport Shona Robison said: “Swimming in Scotland has been a huge success in recent years and we want to ensure that our swimmers are best equipped to build on this success, particularly in the build up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. “This facility will not only increase participation, it will improve performance and deliver a lasting legacy from the 2014 Games. Cllr Guild said: “It will offer superb facilities for the public, with a state of the art competition pool and family facilities. This will be a centre that can be enjoyed by all ages and will have a wide appeal.”
Cllr Guild added: “The start of work on this major project is also an important event for the local economy. A number of local sub-contractors are being used in the construction phase and that will give firms a boost during what are very difficult times.” Mike Roberts, Director of Sports Development, sportscotland, said: “sportscotland has worked closely with Dundee City Council to develop plans for a swimming pool complex to meet the needs of the city and the wider community for many years to come. We were delighted to support Dundee City Council’s vision and ambition with investment of £3million and it is very exciting to see the project starting to take shape. “This swimming pool will play a vital part in Dundee’s drive towards urban and social regeneration. By combining community use with training and competition facilities, this will create a fantastic environment for discovering and developing young swimmers and for inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.” Lindsay Cowan, Mansell’s Regional Director, added: “We are extremely pleased to be on site at East Marketgait, with work to construct the swimming pool complex now underway. “This is a major, exciting development for the people of Dundee - and the wider Tayside community. We’re delighted to be playing our part in the creation of this hugely impressive facility, not only will this project sustain jobs but it will also create new opportunities for the area.”

The building design follows the ethos of Westbank, constructing the various elements to suit the intended use and minimise use of natural resources. The ground floor being partially below ground level is masonry construction and therefore the thermal mass has been used in conjunction with passive stack ventilation to ensure that a stable temperature can be maintained within the gym.

Steve Eastland Design is delighted to have been selected by Westbank Healthy Living Centre to design their new low energy extension. We are looking forward to working with the team to bring this building to life .
The objective is to minimise the running costs of this element of the building whilst offering a stable thermal environment for Gym users. Client: Westbank Community Health & Care Independent Electricity Access to electricity is essential both during a build and so that a completed building can be occupied. Use of fuel guzzling generators on a commercial building site and costly connections to the National Grid could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to Midlands based Off Grid Energy.

The innovative and portable e-cube acts as a power source during the construction process, and the installation of a hybrid power source as part of the building’s design removes the need for connection to the National Grid for an electricity supply. Both power sources provide electricity via the same principle. A battery becomes the primary power source for running machinery, lights, appliances, heating etc. Power is topped up via solar panels (and wind turbines if appropriate) as well as a generator, which will switch on automatically only when needed, keeping fuel consumption andCO2 emissions low. During the building project money is saved as a result of reductions in generator fuel consumption and servicing and re-fuelling visits. The hybrid system is an alluring proposition for companies wishing to increase their green credentials as well as save money. The system can be tailored to the exact requirements of a commercial enterprise, whether a refurbishment or a new build, eliminating a company’s dependence upon the power companies and eradicating electricity bills without having to make any compromise in their power consumption. Weston Sixth Form College The Jill Dando Centre is the home of Weston College Sixth Form. At the Centre, A Level students are taught in modern classrooms and use dedicated science laboratories, seminar rooms and computers suites. All classrooms are equipped with interactive white boards. The origin of the college can be traced back to 1859 when private classes were offered by Henry Stacy in drawing and painting at Oriel Terrace. This was followed by a School of Art which opened in 1865 following public donations. The college’s Hans Price Gallery which was used to exhibit work by college students and local artists, was housed in the former School of Science and Art on Lower Church Road, designed by local architect Hans Price. The Sixth Form is currently undergoing a two storey extension to provide an additional four classrooms. The extension is being delivered by HPS Bristol. HPS Bristol has an excellent relationship with Weston College, HPS completed one of its largest projects to date last year at the site, delivering a major refurbishment to the Main Reception, Library, Bistro and Beauty Salons at Knightstone House. That project was completed over the summer holiday period, 2011, the scheme was completed on time and to budget.

The new, larger, £1.4 million travellers’ site in Bridlington’s Woldgate is now complete.
Integra Ltd: Your Power – Safe in our Hands
Land clearance and construction began on the new site, almost opposite the existing site on Woldgate, during the summer of 2011 after East Riding of Yorkshire Council approved the government funded scheme in March. The new site has 22 pitches, four more than at the old site, a 30-year-old former household waste tip which has been deemed unfit for its purpose. Methane gas is escaping from the old tip and land under the concrete pitches has been shifting. According to the council it was past its sell-by date, had become difficult to maintain and is beyond refurbishment. Replacing it with a new one was the cheapest option. As well as more pitches the new site which is set into the hill side will include a wardens block, a five-space car park and 11 single storey amenity blocks housing bathroom and kitchen facilities.
Integra Ltd is a specialist electrical and mechanical contractor, trusted to carry out vital work for the most demanding of clients in industry, commerce, health, education and the domestic market. We have built a national reputation for providing the highest standard of electrical and mechanical work. Services include: Installations, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, security systems & CCTV, Cat5E/Cat6 Networking, standby generator power units and UPS, testing & inspection/PAT testing, full electrical design work and photovoltaic solar panel installations. For a standard of electrical workmanship you can trust call on Integra Ltd.
Once travellers have moved onto the new site the old site will be cleared and earth excavated from the new site used to safely restore it back to a green field. The new Woldgate site was selected after public consultation and an earlier plan to locate it off the road to Grindale was strongly opposed by residents. Experts are in the process of assembling and installing the linear accelerator at the new centre in Brants Bridge and hope to have the hi-tech new treatment in place in the next few weeks. Snow Hill Development The Snow Hill is a homeless services scheme. What makes it unique for a homeless services scheme is that it has a mixture of supported accommodation for people who have experienced homelessness as well as apartments for the private rental market. It is a canal-side development close to Birmingham City centre, from a design point of view the key feature is the canopy roof inspired by the building’s history in the performing arts and its previous roles as a theatre. The canopy creates an open-air atrium at the heart of the building which allows natural ventilation to flow into the building and removes the former institutionalised feel. Midland Heart, client for the scheme, is the largest housing, support and regeneration organisation based in
the West Midlands. Midland Heart appointed a contractor to deliver the multi-million pound redevelopment of the Snow Hill homeless scheme in Birmingham city centre. Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) secured the £6.25million contract, which saw the former hostel transformed into 92 apartments for both men and women ready to leave direct access accommodation. The Midlands based firm began work on site in June 2010 and the development is completed in late 2011.

The project forms a key part of a plan to revolutionise housing and support provision for Birmingham’s homeless population.
