College Refurbishment Overcladding Blackpool and The Fylde College has offi cially announced plans for a £52.5million phased 10 year redevelopment strategy for its Fleetwood Nautical, Bispham, University Centre and Ansdell campuses. The College originally submitted plans for a £213million project to the former Learning and Skills Council (LSC) for a complete rebuild of the main Bispham site at Sands Way and the Fleetwood Nautical Campus. However, 144 projects across the country were left without the money to go ahead after the capital funding crisis. As a result, the College has revised original plans and considered alternative, scaled back options for modernisation and refurbishment. The more modest plans include a combination of refurbishment, upgrading existing buildings and selective new build. The fi rst phase, scheduled between 2010 and 2013, includes a full refurbishment of Fleetwood Nautical Campus and minor refurbishment of the Fleetwood halls of residence. As one of only four specialist Merchant Navy and Maritime training facilities in the country, the campus is a real asset and one which needs investment. This phase will also see a major rejuvenation to the 1960’s Cleveleys building at Bispham, with over-cladding on the external, seven storey concrete structure. New windows will allow for better ventilation and regulation of temperatures internally and the building will be better insulated and more energy effi cient. The main mechanical and electrical services within the building and across the wider campus will also be replaced. Phase two, scheduled for 2014-15 will see the Thornton, Elswick and Garstang buildings at Bispham undergo the same cladding and service upgrades. During the third and fourth phases, a new technology building will be developed at Bispham, providing replacement accommodation to match the great facilities for the Engineering and Construction courses. A new creative arts building is also planned for the University Centre to replace the outdated Park Building. Minor refurbishment and improvements to landscaping will also take place during these phases.

BPA Architecture have been involved (originally as Burnett Pollock Associates) in over-cladding proposals for the Bispham Campus of Blackpool and the Fylde College since early 2010. Having established a vocabulary and an image with the completed phase 1 over-cladding and window replacement of the seven storey Cleveleys Building the challenge for BPA was to continue its logic into the four other two and three storey buildings of phase 2. Two of these, Elswick and Thornton had marked constructional similarities with Cleveleys. This was also true to some extent of Garstang but with some interesting idiosyncrasies. It was not at all true of Poulton. The unifying use of the same silver and grey colour pallet is an important part of the approach. Also the red verticals of Cleveleys, part of the original re-branding, are continued into phase 2 as background flashes to building signage. The strongest element, though, was the use of full height glazing throughout the ground floors to replace existing full height frames incorporating coloured panels at the spandrels. At Cleveleys it had been decided not to over-clad the ground floor walls since the powder coated aluminium was considered vulnerable to damage. It may seem counterintuitive to use glass instead but experience shows it is less likely to be damaged. Perhaps more important is that it is more easily repaired if it is. Continuous, flush framed, glazing at ground floor level is continued into appropriate parts of the upper floors to continue the crisp glazed effect.

Plans elsewhere to improve the effi ciency of the College and continue delivering quality education include: Relocating hair and beauty provision from Carleton Court, which is leased by the College, to the Bispham and Ansdell Campuses • Relocation of adult and community courses from Carr Head to other local community venues • A review of the successful and award winning Blackpool Build Up project, currently funded by the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative until 2011, with the view to keep it running • Developing the University Centre’s own 20 year strategy – we are now the country’s third largest FE provider of HE • Retain presence in the South Fylde with our purpose built Ansdell Campus Blackpool and The Fylde College Principal, Pauline Waterhouse OBE, said: “In challenging economic circumstances, this marks a proactive and encouraging move forward for the College. We were disappointed not to receive funding from the LSC but doing nothing was not an option for us – we aim to provide the highest possible standards of education and a pleasant environment for our students.” Client: Blackpool & Fylde College Main Contractor: D & B Facades UK Ltd Architect: BPA Architecture

refurbishing classrooms and toilets to carrying out drainage improvements, rebuilding chimney stacks, installing new fi re doors and security fencing along with resurfacing school yards and installing canopies and covered walkways.

As Rhondda Cynon Taf Council spends almost £75million on schools throughout the County Borough, delivering a fi rst-class education clearly remains a key priority for this local authority.

Project type- Extension

The massive investment in new schools along with major upgrades to existing educational facilities will have a positive impact on the learning experience of young people throughout the County Borough.

Site Address-Cwmbach Junior School, Llangorse Road, Ab erdare, Mid Glamorgan, CF44 0HS

This year more than £13million has been spent on opening one new school building and extending another, while £2.7million was used on refurbishment works in a further 20 schools. But a staggering £50million will see the creation of the proposed fi rst-class education, community and leisure facility in Aberdare, along with the opening of new primary schools.

Contract Period- 15 Months

The Council is committed to ensuring modern, sustainable and environmentally-friendly educational facilities for the future that are state-of-the-art in their design and will inspire pupils to want to achieve full potential. This in turn will create a highly-skilled workforce whose contribution to the very fabric of Rhondda Cynon Taf will create an economically buoyant County Borough of the future. Cllr Eudine Hanagan Cabinet Member for Education, Lifelong Skills and Learning said: “Providing the best possible school facilities for our children and young people in Rhondda Cynon Taf has long-since been one of our top priorities and it is clear that given the widespread investment plans throughout the County Borough we are delivering on our pledges. “We take great pride in the standard of education we offer our pupils, both in the classroom and through our pioneering Services For Young People team whose work is truly inspirational. “We know that young people’s learning is often a product of their environment and the exceptional investment in schools throughout the County Borough will have a long term positive impact on our young people.” Work is now under way on the proposed £50million education, leisure and community master plan for the Ynys Site in Aberdare. Blaengwawr Comprehensive, Aberdare Girls’ and Aberdare High Schools will close as part of the scheme, with all secondary pupils in the town attending the new school which will have 1600 places and include Special Education Needs rooms, drama studios, workshops, IT suites and more.

Petroc College Refurbishment Work begins to transform Petroc’s Barnstaple Campus Planned work is now underway at Petroc to improve and develop the provision of teaching and learning at its Barnstaple Campus for students, staff and the wider community. The contractors arrived at the College to begin the site set up and surveying, ahead of the remodelling of over 5,000 m² of classrooms and internal space, thanks to funding from the Government’s Enhanced Renewal Grant (ERG). The College’s iconic C Block, which is visible from Barnstaple town centre, is due to be transformed to enhance the building’s performance, saving energy through updated windows and adding an additional insulating layer to the building using modern methods of construction. The classrooms are also going to be updated into state of the art fl exible learning facilities, designed to increase utilisation and improve the learning environment for students and staff. The work on C Block follows the successful completion of a brand new, state of the art spa and sports therapies suite, which was installed in the centre of the Barnstaple Campus at the end of last year.“2013 promises to be an exciting year for us,” enthused Neil Hookway, Director for Resources at Petroc. “This is just one of a number of projects we have scheduled to improve the provision of teaching and learning space at the college and give our students the best possible experience while they are with us,” added Neil. Jason Quinn the estates manager has said, ‘the refurbishment will offer a fully refurbished building with fl exible and multi-functional teaching spaces, The buildings are 1950’s and have poor effi ciency and are in need of modernisation, this will also boost local economy as we have attempted to use all local labour force (main contractor Barnstaple based). The work is due to be completed by September 2013, for the start of the new academic year.

Two new classrooms are being built as part of a two-phase extension at the front and side of the school to modernise the building. But because the school is voluntary aided it needs to raise 10 per cent towards the building works. Sacred Heart Community Action Group, the newly formed fundraising committee, has launched a Buy-a-Brick Appeal, encouraging people to fund the cost of a brick, so that they will be able to look at the new building and know they have contributed. Marie Clare said: “The school is popular but has a shortage of space for the children and the future intake. “This is an exciting and super opportunity to have some fun raising this money while reaching out to our community and fostering a greater sense of community spirit.” The group said the Buy-a-Brick Appeal, at £5 a brick, is a chance for people to “leave a legacy” and honour a loved one — certifi cates in memory of loved ones will be given to those who make donations.

Warriner School After working with the school on previous projects R.D.G. was approved and asked by Dr Annabel Kay (Head teacher) and Nichola Gardner (Finance Director) to prepare Feasibility Plans for discussion purposes for creating the new Sixth Form for the Warriner School. I was advised of my fi nancial constraints and received a brief outlining the school's requirements which was 3 Classrooms each to house 24 students, a Common Room for 90+ to include a Servery, Toilet Area, Locker Room and Maintenance Room a scheme was produced for observations. It was decided to build a new structure of hi-tec design to inspire modern learning rather than adapt any existing facility. The proposed new building is adjacent to the school and will be constructed of a simple portal frame with "benchmark" curved wall cladding. This is quick to construct and virtually maintenance free. After vigorous discussions with the Local Authority (Oxfordshire County Council) and their Agencies, Highways, Arboricultural and Ecological, approval was granted All the internal walls, except the Toilet areas, are constructed in self colour blocks and have good deci-bell ratings; each classroom will be equipped with interactive and dry white boards and a shelved Store Room. The Common Room has its' own Servery and Drop Down Electric Screen and Projector. All area are heated and air-conditioned with an air source heat pump. The Toilet Area has under-fl oor heating and all fi xtures are antivandal with sensor activated water taps and Dyson Air Blade Hand Dryers. The main access is by a Door Control System as are the Classrooms and this system may be progressed to the

The winery will boast solar-powered energy generation, a roof covered in wildfl owers to help with thermal insulation of the building and shading on two sides to reduce the need for air conditioning.

‘It makes sense to export,’ Driver, a former hedge-fund manager, told Decanter.com, pointing out that his neighbouring winery, the multi-award-winning Ridgeview, exports 20% of its production.

The building has been set into the existing landscape on two sides to reduce the external wall area and the potential for direct heat loss, while a waste-water treatment plant will further reduce the winery’s impact on the environment.

The three wines, made by Champenois Jonathan Médard, will be a house sparkling, a rosé which will be 30% of the production, and a blanc de blancs or blanc de noirs, depending on relevant quality. There will also be small amounts of still wine.

Look out for this weekend’s special Green Issue of The Grocer for more stores on the trade’s environmental impact.

Driver says the winery – the biggest in the country – has been designed ‘with environmental sustainability at its core’. It is being constructed of local English oak and English sweet chestnut and ‘includes 50kW of photovoltaic generation capacity’ which ‘will save 16 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year’.

The winery is equipped with stainless steel tanks with an initial capacity of 200,000 litres. Grapes will be entirely handpicked and hand-sorted. So far 20ha have been planted in the vineyard, which lies 3 miles (5km) from the English Channel and is mainly silty clay loam over chalk. The current varietal breakdown is eight hectares of Pinot Noir, 6ha of Chardonnay, 2ha of Pinot Meunier, and a further 2ha of Riesling - ‘in the warmest spot in the vineyard’, Driver says - for still wine, one of the only English Rieslings. The next 20ha planting, which starts on 1 April, will consist of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Pinot Gris.

Driver told Decanter.com the 2012 harvest was smaller than expected but they should have a crop this year. The winery will be ‘up and running’ by 31 August, he said.

Fire Station Aberbargoed A new fi re station for the Mid Valleys has fi nally been given the go-ahead after a 13-year wait. After more than a decade of delays, South Wales Fire Authority has sanctioned the funding to build a new station on the outskirts of Aberbargoed replacing two existing, but now antiquated, stations at Cefn Fforest and Bargoed. Building work could begin as early as next month as long as tenders, due to be returned by an October 19 deadline, fall within budget. It is expected to take 10 months to complete. Plans for the new station include fi ve fi re engine bays, a conference training room, a community room and training tower. Once open, the old stations at Cefn Fforest, which houses full time and retained crews, and Bargoed’s retained station will close and the 60 or so personnel will amalgamate under the same roof. New chairman of the South Wales Fire Authority Tudor Davies said once the new station is fully functional, there will be up to a 12- month review over the sustainability of existing crew numbers with a possibility that there could be reductions in posts. However, he emphasised that no decisions had been made. Mr Davies, who was only appointed to the chairman’s post in June, said the decision to fund the project had been 13 years in the making. “The original intention was to close Bargoed in 1999, which was reprieved for two years. Then in 2001, the closing of Bargoed was further deferred until the funding was available for the new fi re station.

“What was once a dream is now becoming reality. For 30 years the congregation has used rented premises but these new facilities will open up many more opportunities for ministries to the congregation and community, and offer community groups and local businesses a range of meeting rooms. We believe the café will be a big attraction. We hope to be using the new building before the end of this year.” Managing director of Kier Construction’s operations in Scotland, Brian McQuade, commented: “We have been working with Westhill Episcopal Church and their advisors over a number of months to get this project to a point where it meets all their aspirations.

Morpeth Health Centre Project Morpeth’s eagerly awaited new £18million health centre is on track for its spring opening target. Construction of the NHS facility on the site of a former care home, The Mount, at Haggs Field is nearing completion. GP and primary care health services, as well as outpatient, x-ray and other specialist provision currently provided by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust staff at Morpeth Cottage Hospital will all be available under one roof at the new building. Patients based at the GP practices and with appointments for Northumbria Healthcare’s services will be advised of the change of details in the run-up to the opening. Dr Alistair Blair, who is a GP at Morpeth’s Wellway Health Centre as well as being chief clinical and accountable offi cer of the NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The modern centre will ensure that the people of Morpeth and the surrounding areas are provided for over the next 25 years. “It’s great news that the centre will soon be open and delivering high quality health services to people living in Morpeth. “Staff and GPs at the surgeries are gearing up for the move and are looking forward to welcoming patients to the brand new state-of-the-art facility, which will include new clinical areas to provide modern healthcare services for the local community. “The health centre will provide high-quality healthcare and the modern equipment will help GPs to do diagnostic testing in the surgery, which will save many people from having to travel to receive their treatment.” It will provide new premises for Greystoke and Gas House Lane, giving access to new, modern healthcare facilities for the 14,000 patients registered at both practices. The centre, which was developed with investment from NHS North of Tyne, also offers the opportunity for integrated working for the staff and patients at Wellway, as well as closer working with hospital and community colleagues to provide more care closer to people’s homes. It has 30 beds, which provide rehabilitation for the elderly and palliative care. The new building is designed with energy effi ciency and carbon reduction in mind and aims to reduce CO2 output and energy consumption. Sian Rankin, construction manager at contractor Laing O’Rourke, said: “We’re very pleased with the progression of the centre and confi dent that the patients will enjoy their new surroundings once they move in. “It’s been a pleasure to work with the NHS and be a part of creating a state-of-the-art facility for the people of Morpeth.”

TYA Day Care Unit, Southampton Hospital A turf cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction of a Teenage Cancer Trust unit for young patients in the South of England and Channel Islands took place on Friday (7 December) at Southampton General Hospital.

Louise Hooker, Teenage Cancer Trust Lead Nurse at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust comments about today’s milestone: “I am delighted we have reached this signifi cant stage in the development of cancer care for young people in the South of England. These facilities will enable all young people within our area who need cancer treatment to be looked after by our specialist team, alongside other young people, in a ward that had been especially designed for them. This will make a huge difference to young people and their families.”

An audience including donors and former young cancer patients, who helped with the design of the unit, were welcomed to the hospital building site to celebrate the milestone. Updated architect plans and artist impressions of the state-of-the-art unit were revealed alongside the announcement that Teenage Cancer Trust’s Southampton fundraising appeal has now raised a staggering £2million with £880,000 donated by Channel Island residents.

Simon Davies, Chief Executive of Teenage Cancer Trust said: “Today is an exciting moment in Teenage Cancer Trust’s 22 year history. We have always wanted to build a unit at Southampton General Hospital and this will be our fi rst in the south of England. The local community has been incredibly supportive and although we have raised a signifi cant amount already towards this unit build we still need a further £400,000 and ask them to support us in our fi nal push for funds.”

The construction and maintenance of the ten bed unit and the services it provides will cost Teenage Cancer Trust £2.4million. As the charity relies on public donations to fund all of its vital work, a further £400,000 urgently needs to be raised before the unit becomes operational in summer 2013. Further funds will then need to be raised after this date for the on-going maintenance and services the unit will provide.

Once opened, the Southampton Teenage Cancer Trust unit will complement the 25 other specialist units the charity has built in NHS hospitals across the UK since 1990. The charity plans to build a further nine, so all

The Teenage Cancer Trust unit will support young cancer patients aged 16 to 24 living in Hampshire, Dorset, Channel Islands, South Wiltshire, Isle of Wight and West Sussex. The unit will feature six en-suite inpatient bedrooms, which are large enough to let family or friends to stay overnight, four day care spaces, social and recreation areas with a kitchen and dining area plus a parent/family sitting room.

Alexandra Palace Alexandra Palace is the iconic Grade II listed North London event and leisure destination surrounded by 196 acres of parkland. First opened to the public in 1973 as a Victorian centre for recreation and entertainment, the Palace has since entertained millions at world class events and exhibitions, survived two devastating fi res, accommodated refugees and internees during the First World War and transmitted for the world’s fi rst regular highdefi nition public television broadcast. While this colourful past has certainly provided the People’s Palace with a rich history, today more than 40% of its space is in a derelict or unusable state. This is preventing the historic landmark from generating suffi cient income to cover maintenance costs and from investing further into its facilities. Terry Farrell and Partners have developed a spatial masterplan for the Alexandra Park and Palace Trust as a strategic design framework for planning a sustainable future for the Palace. Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of the Alexandra Park and Palace Trust said: ‘Our regeneration plans are based on our vision of Alexandra Palace being a world-class entertainment destination and an iconic building much valued by the community. Our masterplan looks at a six-point regeneration plan which will ensure Alexandra Palace becomes a sustainable asset for the local community and economy, with a worldwide appeal. ’ The six-point regeneration plan identifi es key areas needing improvement across the Palace and Park. These include the improvement of visitors’ fi rst impressions of the Palace, upgrading the entrances to the Palace, making it easier to move around inside, upgrading the main halls, a hotel in the Palace and

opening up the derelict spaces. Wilson says: ‘‘The regeneration of the Palace is a long-term project which tackles a number of key issues and is likely to take several years to complete. One area we are extremely excited about is opening up the derelict spaces within the Palace and developing commercial, cultural and community opportunities.’ One of the derelict areas highlighted by Wilson is the restoration of Alexandra Palace’s extraordinary Victorian theatre located in the north eastern side of the Palace. Abandoned for many years, the regeneration plan aims to refurbish the Theatre; retaining its unique look and feel and conserving key heritage aspects like the ceiling. The commercial viability of this space is vital for the Palace so the theatre’s restoration plans include the installation of a fl at fl oor and fl exible seating, making it suit a wide variety of uses. Another derelict space being restored in the Palace is the historic BBC studios. Wilson says: ‘In our regeneration plans it is so important for us recognise the historic signifi cance of Alexandra Palace as the birthplace of television, a medium which has an enormous impact on everyone’s lives today. We are determined to do justice to this legacy, allowing people to experience the early days of television at fi rst-hand. ’

The Palace’s six-point regeneration plan Improving your first impressions By improving the eastern and western approaches to the Palace, the regeneration plans aim to restore the Palace’s grand sense of arrival for its visitors. The masterplan includes changes to the East Court car park, road layout and terraces creating two

new external public spaces. Upgrading the entrances to the Palace To maximise visitors enjoyment in the East and Palm Courts, signifi cant work will be done to repair the glass domes and new features will be included in both courts such as indoor plants, explanatory exhibitions, public catering and seating. Additionally, levelled fl oor surfaces with under fl oor heating will be installed in the East Court. Making it easier to move around inside the Palace To make it easier for visitors to move around inside the Palace, investment will be spent reopening unused corridors and refurbishing existing passageways within the building.

Built behind the existing Victorian façade of the Palace, the hotel would be able to make use of the imposing West Tower, which has been derelict for many years. Opening up the derelict spaces Many of the most fascinating and historically signifi cant parts of the Palace, such as the Theatre and BBC Studios, are closed to the public due to their poor structural condition. We are planning to bring these spaces back to life, providing public access and appreciation as well as learning opportunities for local schools colleges and the community. This part of the scheme is currently the subject of a major grant application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Upgrading the main halls There is a great need to upgrade the main halls and modernise the backstage areas to cope with the growing demands of our events business. As a minimum, the regeneration will upgrade the Great Hall’s lighting and make repairs to the glass roof. A hotel in the Palace We are also investigating the feasibility of turning the Panorama Room space on the south facing side of the Palace into a hotel; as fi rst envisaged back in the 1980s.

ZSL’s Tiger Territory ZSL London Zoo’s brand new Sumatran tiger enclosure has been given the royal seal of approval on Wednesday 20 March, when it was offi cially opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Tiger Territory, a £3.6m project, is home to Jae Jae and Melati, Europe’s most genetically important pair of Sumatran tigers who were matched by the global breeding programme for the critically endangered species. With high hopes for breeding resting on the pair, their cubs would be the fi rst to be born at ZSL London Zoo for more than 15 years. And in what keepers are hoping is a prophetic twist of fate, tigress Melati is the granddaughter of the Zoo’s last tiger cub, Hari. The new enclosure covered by a canopy of steel cable netting stretches over 2,500sq m and features a number of tall feeding poles to encourage the animals to climb for their dinner. The Tigers are treated to a pool as well as heated rocks. It is hoped their new environment, designed to meet their needs fi rst, will encourage them to mate. “We have tried our best to fade into the background,” says Michael Kozdon,

architect of the new £3.6m Tiger Territory at London Zoo. It’s not often you hear an architect say that, but then it’s not often you have a pair of endangered Sumatran tigers as clients, either. Jae Jae, for example, likes to have generous amounts of Old Spice sprayed around his enclosure (that’s males for you). “In the past,” continues Kozdon, “animal enclosures were all about creating an iconic architectural statement. Now the emphasis is on animal welfare, on bringing visitors as close to the creatures as possible. Our aim is to disappear.”

ous silhouette echoes the pinkish peaks of its neighbour, the Mappin Terraces, a manmade range of rocky mountains that have long poked their summits above the trees, bringing a surreal air to this strange corner of the park. Built in 1914, this elevated landscape was the result of a clause governing the zoo’s expansion: an additional landgrab of four acres would only be allowed if the animals they housed could be visible from the rest of the park. Sadly, this sheer geological formation, erupting above the neat neoclassical terraces of NW1, has been barren since 1985, when Pipaluk (the last of the polar bears, whose name means Little One in Inuit) was fi nally moved out after 18 years.

This explains why, rather than being held in by a roof, Jae Jae and his partner, Melati, have a fi ne net canopy stretching above their heads – even though its silken www.basestructures.com threads are made of 3mm steel cable (tigers are capable of jumping 5m from a standing start). Tiger Territory’ will be a new home for Sumatran tigers, of which it is estimated that there are now fewer than 300 left in the wild. As this number decreases, the creation of man-made habitats in which they can be protected and conserved becomes increasingly vital to ensure the survival of this magnifi cent creature. However, the potential danger of a Sumatran tiger should not be underestimated. Weighing up to 130kg, running at up to 30 miles per hour, jumping as high as the average house and being able to dig well below ground means that it is a diffi cult predator to contain. This becomes even more challenging given the second fundamental purpose of the new enclosure: to create the illusion of openness. Providing intimate spaces between human and animal will enable an insight into the tiger’s world, exciting the public’s emotions and desires to protect them. Our response to these requirements is an elegant stainless steel cable net structure, with a surface area of 2250m2. This lightweight solution safely contains the force of the tigers without the appearance of a tangible barrier. Internally it is supported by four main masts that have been jacked into position, with fi ne sand in pots at each base. Smaller perimeter masts are tied back using Platipus ground anchors, utilising the weight of the soil to resist the cable net forces. The new enclosure is situated between two existing buildings: a 1930s brickwork stork and ostrich house and a 1960s concrete sea lion viewing stand. These have both been preserved and strengthened in order to minimise the impact of the development; by avoiding the disruption within the zoo that demolition would cause and by reducing the quantity of material required to create the new enclosure. Sensitive refurbishment has been undertaken in order to create living quarters for the tigers and viewing platforms for the visitors. Although the former sea lion stand was deemed unable to provide necessary lateral stability to the cable net structure, this was overcome through the addition of clamping reinforcing steel plates to either side of the frame, without compromising the original structure. David Dexter Associates are extremely proud to have met the challenge of creating a structure that satisfi es the two confl icting roles of enabling tigers to live in safe captivity whilst also providing the ultimate experience for the public by allowing them to experience close proximity to the animals. Through the design of a highly effi cient structure, we have been able to minimise material usage and consequently the energy required to deliver the new enclosure. This solution meets all practical requirements whilst also minimising material use: the

total weight of the new structure is approximately 10kg/m2. This is approximately one tenth of what a traditional solution might have weighed. Additionally, where possible essential additional structure has been constructed using low impact materials, such as reused timber railway sleepers.

David Dexter Associates have over ten years’ experience in providing civil, structural and architectural engineering design consultancy. We are proud to be involved in the development of the sumatran tiger exhibit at London Zoo.

Tigers are avid T - 020 7247 7172 E- info@daviddexter.co.uk climbers,” explains 1-5 Vyner Street, London, E2 9DG Robin Fitzgerald, - www.daviddexter.co.uk the zoo’s projects manager. “They like to observe their terrain from a towering vantage point, so we’ve given them a habitat that lets them do exactly that – with a view out over Regent’s Park.” Describing how the poles and canopy support each other, he adds: “It’s basically circus tent technology.” Neatly complying with the brief to all but vanish into thin air, this means there is no need for the extra steel structures that are so common in the zoo’s other mesh enclosures – such as Cedric Price’s famous Snowdon Aviary. Built in 1964, the aviary’s dramatic steel skeleton mimics the angular geometry of a bird’s wing. The Tiger Territory had other constraints to grapple with, most notably the fact that several existing buildings had to be incorporated into the redevelopment. With a limited area of 36 acres in one of London’s most protected settings, the zoo is forced to modify what it has – in this case, a Victorian stork and ostrich house and a 1960s sea lion viewing platform, both of which had been off-limits to visitors for 30 years. The ostrich house now provides a cosy den for the tigers, complete with heated rocks to soothe their weary muscles, while the sea lion stand has become an elevated viewing platform for visitors, with panoramic windows looking out across the Indonesian-inspired landscaping of the enclosure. From here, you can watch the tigers splashing about in their pool, or scaling the feeding poles to devour chicken wings and steak. The new enclosure is fi ve times larger than the previous one, which dated from the 1970s, and its design demonstrates a new emphasis on animal husbandry. The pairing of Jae Jae and Melati was meticulously planned using Studbook, which charts every captive creature’s genetic provenance to facilitate perfect matches. “It’s the online dating service for animals,” says Fitzgerald. And if the hot rocks get them too frisky, the pair can be separated, along with any future cubs, into two different parts of the enclosure, connected by a glass door. While 2013 may be the Year of the Snake on the Chinese calendar, at ZSL London Zoo it’s defi nitely the Year of the Tiger. ZSL London Zoo is just two weeks away from opening the doors to Tiger Territory, a brand-new £3.6m fl agship exhibit, which will be home to the Zoo’s latest arrivals, Jae Jae and Melati, a pair of Sumatran tigers.

Visitors to Tiger Territory will see Jae Jae and Melati in their stunning Indonesian-inspired habitat, which has been designed to meet every sensory need of these endangered animals. ZSL London Zoo is home to world-leading tiger experts, and has been home to tigers for more than 100 years. The new 2,500sqm (27,000sqft) Tiger Territory has been created with ZSL’s team of tiger keepers and conservationists to ensure that it perfectly suits the big cats. Tigers are excellent climbers and like to observe their terrain from a towering vantage point and Tiger Territory will allow them to do just that. The exhibit features high feeding poles to

encourage their natural predatory behaviours and tall trees for the cats to scale. Unusually for cats, tigers love water, and visitors will be able to see them hanging out in their custom-built pool. When they’re not dipping their paws in the water, the tigers will have all-day access to indoor dens where visitors will be able to see them relaxing on heated rocks. Tiger Territory will enable ZSL to breed the critically-endangered tigers at ZSL London Zoo and learn more about these elusive animals to apply to its international fi eld conservation projects to try to reverse the bleak fate of the Sumatran tiger. Both the Global Management Species Programme and the European breeding programme for Sumatran tigers are coordinated by tiger experts at ZSL London Zoo – where ZSL’s specialists are responsible for managing a healthy and diverse population of tigers in zoos around the world. The result of a large public fundraising campaign led by ZSL London Zoo, Tiger Territory will give millions of zoo visitors the chance to get close to these incredible animals and provide a central hub for ZSL’s tiger conservation work when it opens on March 22 2013. Williamson Square, Liverpool Marks and Spencer to revamp Williamson Square eyesore A derelict corner of one of Liverpool’s busiest squares is to be demolished and redeveloped. Marks and Spencer bought the former Famous Army Stores and ex-Stoniers shop in Williamson Square – behind its Church Street store – as part of its expansion plans. Now it has applied for planning permission to revamp the properties at the corner of the square with Tarleton Street. The new store is estimated to cost £3.5M of private funding and is due to take 14 months before it is ready for the public. The scheme comprises construction of a 4/5 storey building to be used for retail purposes. This is a speculative development although Marks & Spencer may expand into the space. The associated works include access roads, enabling, infrastructure, sewer systems and landscaping. The national chain said it wants to pull down the eyesore buildings, but has no immediate plans what the new space would be used for. A planning request to the city council says the proposal is for a speculative development that would be building shells and cores only. The fi rst and second fl oors of the new building would line up with those of the existing Marks and Spencer store to allow for possible future expansion.
