Dartmouth Academy Work on the Dartmouth Academy started its £8.5million rebuild in March, contractors Leadbitter began the 18 month process. The refurbishment with new build is due to be completed by Summer 2014, ready for students and staff in the new school year in September. When fi nished the new academy buildings will feature the best educational technology, a unique green energy-generating system, which is expected to generate more energy than the school needs, and a school canteen which doubles as a restaurant designed by Dartmouth celebrity chef Mitch Tonks. The canteen and Admin block were demolished before the beginning of last term. This is the view from the spot used the in the artists impression of the main entrance to the new Academy. The next signifi cant sign of progress was the erection of the building’s steel frame which will begin towards the end of April and progress from right to left (facing the site from the Ridges). Senior members of the Dartmouth Academy team, including Principal Nick Hindmarsh and Business Manager Simon Rushton, met on site on Thursday February 14th to discuss the fi nal plan for the build process and how the Academy site will change in the coming months. The build preparations will take a few weeks before the offi cial ‘turf breaking ceremony’ to signal the offi cial start of construction. The build will be completed by Summer 2014. When fi nished the new Academy buildings will feature the best educational technology, a unique green energy-generating system, which is expected to generate more energy than the school needs, and a school canteen which doubles as a restaurant designed by Dartmouth celebrity chef Mitch Tonks. Dartmouth Academy Principal Nick Hindmarsh said: “It is very exciting, after 18 months in the planning, to be at this point – we

are looking at the most signifi cant and positive change to education facilities in Dartmouth in a generation. The new Academy buildings will emphasise and support our all-through structure and give the children of Dartmouth the school they have deserved for so long.” Dartmouth Academy Chair of Governors Mary Shaw said: “This is the moment we have all been waiting for, the moment that the rebuild starts! Our staff have been transforming the school over the last two and a half years, improving standards and raising expectations, and this rebuild will help to inspire them and a new generation of learners in Dartmouth.

Huddersfield University Learning/Leisure Centre Learning and Leisure Centre operational by 2014 By spring 2013 a dramatic new £22.5 million learning and leisure centre, occupying some 7,000 square metres, will have taken shape adjacent to Wakefi eld Road – opposite Sainsbury Supermarket – that is currently mostly occupied by a staff car park. New parking facilities have been developed at nearby Firth Street. The University of Huddersfi eld is experiencing its most complex building project yet, resulting in massive improvements to sports, leisure, learning and catering facilities. The University received planning permission today from Kirklees Council. Work began last summer with the demolition of the existing Shorehead Building. And after six phases of construction, designed to minimise disruption to university life, it will conclude in the spring of 2014. When the new building is operational in 2014, the existing University sports centre will be demolished and the site landscaped. The new centre will stand on stilts and have four levels. The lowest will be the new sports hall, with a much greater range of facilities than the present building, including an eight-court hall, squash courts and fi tness studios. The next fl oor will have more than 1,000 square metres of social, catering and learning space with links through to the existing library. The new catering area will be much larger and more fl exible than existing facilities. There will also be a new and expanded student services centre. The frontage of the main entrance to University’s Central Services Building will be remodelled to allow access to the new building, the third fl oor of which will be new premises for the University’s Students’ Union. The top level will be a conference centre. Cricket legend Harold ‘Dickie’ Bird OBE is almost 80, but he has lost none of his passion for sport and has made it his mission to encourage and enable young people to play it. That is why this dedicated Yorkshireman was an ideal choice to preside over the ceremonial ground breaking for a £22.5 million development at the University of Huddersfi eld, which the exumpire is convinced will be a boon to sports of all sorts.

pleased with the progress given the complexities that the huge structure presents: “We’ve come through the winter on programme and things are looking good. The bad winter weather can sometimes delay the work and as the groundworks progress you never just know what obstacles you may fi nd, despite undertaking a fairly detailed site survey. “The groundworks were particularly tricky because it is very complex structure. It will comprise over 6,500 square metres on six levels and it also has to tie in and connect with the main University Central Services Building,” he added. The next big milestone for the construction team is to ensure that the building is completely watertight and this is due for completion over the summer. Work will then switch to the inside of the building. “For its size and complexity, this will be the largest and most complex project we have tackled on the campus,” said Mr Johnson. “As well as numerous sports facilities and a fi tness centre, it will also house a variety of service departments, including the Students’ Union, Student Services, Careers, the International Student Offi ce and it will have a large food hall. It will also provide a brand new University reception desk and a conference centre.” The architects for the new building are Leeds-based Watson Batty and global company Mott MacDonald were commissioned to carry out mechanical and electrical engineering design and performance services. Keir Hardie Primary School The construction of Keir Hardie Primary School, Canning Town, East London is now underway. The £7.38m project, funded by Countryside Properties and delivered in partnership with Newham council, will create a state-of-the-art primary school for local children. Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, assisted by Richard Cherry, Deputy Chairman of Countryside Properties, laid the fi rst foundations for the new Keir Hardy Primary School at a ceremony this week. Based in Fife Road, the school is the focal point of an award winning 649 home development by Countryside Properties and a key part of the transformative £3.7 billion Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme. Keir Hardie Primary School will provide local children with state-of-the-art education facilities and a brand new building. It has been designed to create a fi rst class learning environment, which will further support the school’s recent ‘Good’ Ofsted rating. The design of the three-storey building features a traditional London Square with a contemporary style and character. It will have two forms of entry and will be able to accommodate 470 children aged between three and 11 years. It will benefi t from a new playground with multi-use games area, a nursery, an ICS crèche, a hall and dance studio. The students will also be able to enjoy a bespoke roof garden with additional play space and an education weather centre – helping support science as a focus to the children’s learning. The facilities will also support local residents with a variety of local community uses and events. Activities will be available for families with babies and children up to the age of fi ve, and adult learning and family support services will also be delivered from

the school premises. Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham said: “The Canning Town and Custom House regeneration programme is helping to transform the area into a sustainable, mixed community where people choose to live, work and stay. Keir Hardie School is at the heart of the community in Fife Road and this new building will provide modern facilities for its children and other residents. “The redevelopment of this area is very positive and it’s good to see families who were temporarily rehoused have been able to move back. The positive changes in Canning Town and Custom House demonstrates that London is moving east and I look forward to seeing this area continue to develop and thrive.” Richard Cherry, Deputy Chairman of Countryside Properties said: “The start of the school follows on closely from our successful fi rst phase of new homes, marketed for private sale as East City Point. They have sold well and there has been a great deal of interest from local people, partly because of the broad range of different home types. Making a start on the school has been long anticipated and we are delighted to be getting underway. With our partners and the residents we feel a strong commitment to the regeneration of the area. We are creating a great place for people to enjoy living.” Vicky Bonner, Director of Housing for Affi nity Sutton said: “As one of the largest providers of affordable housing in England we are committed to creating sustainable communities and maximizing life chances for our residents. We are delighted to see work starting on Keir Hardie school, which along with the new homes, will help breathe new life into Canning Town and provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for generations.” The Canning Town & Custom House Regeneration Programme is now well underway. It is transforming the area into a sustainable and mixed community and making use of the opportunities created by Canning Town’s excellent transport links. The regeneration programme is delivering more and better new homes, improved and expanded town centres at Canning Town and Custom House and improved links and connections across the A13 and between the bus and rail station. It will also lead to better quality streets and investment in infrastructure, services and community Editorial- Jeremy Dodd The Project Team Client- Countyside Residential (North Thames) Ltd Project Manager- Baily Gardner Plans by- Countyside Residential (North Thames) Ltd Main Contractor- Jerram Falkus Construction Ltd Concreting Contractor- McGrath Brothers (Waste Control) Ltd Glazing Contractor- Clivnars Groundwork Contractor- Modebest Ltd

Rollalong Schools The National Audit Offi ce says 250,000 extra school places will be needed in England by the start of the new school year in September 2014. This doesn’t leave local authorities and academies much time to address this increase in demand and provide additional classroom accommodation or new schools. R-Schools is a new team from an established provider. We have the capability to deliver new schools and school extensions by using our combination of traditional in-situ building techniques and offsite manufacturing capability. R-Schools has taken the James review, and the new EFA guidance, to produce a complete 1FE school with four layout options with either a traditional or contemporary appearance for a fi xed price. R-Schools achieves BREEAM ‘Very Good’. The heart of any school is the teaching environment. R-Classrooms are light and airy; they have a passive ventilation system to control CO levels. Tall windows ensure daylight levels are maintained even at the rear of the classroom. Every classroom has ICT and plenty of power provided. Tall ceilings and suspended lights enhance the lofty feel. -A superb learning environment-. The assembly hall, servery and kitchen facilities are located on one side of an internal courtyard, with the teaching spaces are on the other. This allows the school to be zoned for out-of-hours activities and ensure that during the teaching day the access and security are enhanced by the natural use of space. Security is paramount. During the design process, Secure by Design status, is sought on every scheme and this is enhanced

with the provision of CCTV, electronic access control and other measures as appropriate to the area. Whether the new school is in a contemporary or traditional environment, the external appearance of the buildings can be modifi ed to accommodate the planners’ wishes. R-Schools is currently building three 1FE schools in Berkshire in partnership with Wokingham Borough Council. The scope of work is not limited to the buildings and services, but extends to new playing fi elds, Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA’s), communal tennis courts, boundary security, access roads and utilities. Education is about developing our future citizens with a thorough understanding of the world; R-Schools embodies sustainability as a core vision into the development of each building project. The construction techniques we employ are generally rated as A+ (Green Guide for sustainable development) Offsite construction techniques minimise waste, time, disruption and power demands. We actively encourage participation from schools in the development of their suite and welcome their pupils to our factory and site visits. R-schools has a detailed design approach. We consider all elements of the operation, design and construction of each project. This is as diverse as the aesthetic appeal, the transportation plan, the refuse and waste collection arrangements, fi re safety and provision of sprinkler systems to the colour of the worktops in the kitchens. If you would like to get to know more about our product range please call R-Schools on 01202 824541and discuss the provision of your school with our delivery team.

development principles by constructing a school that meets legislative requirements and goes beyond wherever we can! We’re also working hard to ensure that pupils and staff are able to travel to school safely and by sustainable means, including bus travel, walking and cycling. The archaeological remains of a Methodist church are located next to the new school and the design makes a feature of this historic site. “We are a Church in Wales High School that aims to provide, a stable learning environment for all students; support and encouragement for all to succeed; care for each child as an individual; opportunities to extend learning and knowledge; and a specifi cally Christian ethos. “ “As a 21st century learning school, we know that learning technologies play an important part in achieving our aims. The digitization and automation of jobs – and entire industries – means that the ability to use computer applications has become as important as the ability to read and write with a pen and paper.” St. Teilo’s staff Ian Loynd and Christine Taylor were invited to

Ynysboeth Junior School Primary school pupils in Ynysboeth, Cynon Valley, are to get a new £5 million school campus that will bring together two schools in one building for the fi rst time in over half a century. The 160 pupils from both schools will be transferred to a temporary campus at the former infant school site until the new school is complete in Autumn 2013. Ynysboeth Infant School and Ynysboeth Junior School will be amalgamated to create Ynysboeth Primary School, offering bright, modern facilities of the highest-possible design and environmental standards. The new Primary School campus will be built on the site of the current Ynysboeth Junior School in Abercynon Road, which has been accommodating Junior and Infant School pupils following a fi re that destroyed the Infant school in 2010. The new Ynysboeth Primary School campus will be delivered by Cardiff-based Morgan Sindall construction and will comprise seven classrooms, which includes a nursery, a main hall space, a reception area and a landscaped external teaching space. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and construction partner Morgan Sindall will deliver the impressive new scheme, which forms part of the wider, ongoing commitment to deliver school buildings and environments that inspire children to succeed and thrive. As well as exceptional facilities for young learners, the new school will, as with other new-builds in Rhondda Cynon Taf in recent years, have an “Excellent” BREEM rating and a Grade A Energy Performance Certifi cate. It will use eco-measures such as photovoltaic cells that convert solar energy into electricity. This is the fi rst project to be delivered by Morgan Sindall under the South East Wales Schools Capital Working Group (SEWSCAP) framework, after it was appointed as a partner in May 2011. Tom Davies, operations manager for Morgan Sindall in South East Wales, said: “The community in Ynysboeth has keenly felt

Highland Folk Museum Work is now underway on a new £3M development comprising construction of storage and offi ce buildings at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore. The contract for the new £3.25 million pound state-of-the-art museum store and curatorial centre at the Folk Museum has been signed off with work due to be completed in early 2014. The building, which is to be built by Robertson, the Elgin based infrastructure, support services and construction group, will be home to the museums internationally signifi cant collection. It will be named ‘Am Fasghdh’ in respect of our founder, pioneering social historian and folklorist Dr Isabel F Grant, who established her fi rst museum in a disused church on Iona in 1935, naming it ‘Am Fasgadh’ (Gaelic for ‘The Shelter’). Am Fasgadh thereafter moved to domestic buildings Dr Grant purchased in Kingussie, where it was based for many years. The museum’s curatorial team will also be based in the new building, ensuring they are well placed to care for and promote the collection. Many items in the collection are the last of their kind in the world. The new store will be managed by High Life Highland, the charitable company established by The Highland Council to deliver cultural, learning, sport and leisure services on its behalf. Laurence Young, Interim Chair of High Life Highland said, “We are hugely looking forward to being able to better care for and promote the superb Highland collections in a state-of-the-art building. This excellent new facility will allow us to improve links with academic institutions and other interested groups and individuals, providing them with enhanced opportunities to engage with the collections”. Bob Powell, Principal Museums Offi cer for High Life Highland, explained “Without Dr Grant’s superb vision in rescuing what were regarded as outmoded domestic and agricultural items, these things would have been lost to subsequent generations. Naming this new ‘shelter’ Am Fasgadh is in recognition of that

vision and its importance. Although Dr Grant died in 1983, I am sure she would be delighted to know that, fi nally, the treasures she rescued will be housed in a purpose built facility that will provide perfect conditions for their conservation and promotion.” Chairman of The Highland Council’s Adult and Children’s Services Committee, Councillor Alasdair Christie said: “ The Highland Council is delighted to be providing this superb new addition to the cultural infrastructure of the Highlands and we are pleased that it will allow future generations to continue to discover how the Highlands of the past shaped the Highlands of today.” Frank Reid, Regional Managing Director, of Robertson said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Highland Council on this signifi cant cultural project. The creation of this new building will help to document and maintain the rich heritage of the Highlands and Islands.” High Life Highland High Life Highland is a Scottish charity set up by The Highland Council to develop and promote cultural, sporting, health and wellbeing and learning opportunities across the Highlands. Police Station Work is now proceeding rapidly on a new £10M fi t for purpose custody facility in Bridgend that will serve policing in the region for generations. The scheme comprises construction of an extension to provide a custody suite with support accommodation over 2 storeys, secure yard, car parking and altered access. It meets recommendations by the Inspector of Prisons and the Inspector of Constabulary in 2011 about the need to invest in the new custody facilities to meet legal requirements set by Parliament on detention. The steel frame is now in place for the structure which will include a custody suite comprising of 42 cells, and a modern offi ce complex on Queens Road North at Bridgend Industrial Estate. This new development will complement the similar modern facilities in Cardiff Bay, and is set to improve the police service provided across South Wales. The custody suite will replace the outdated cells in Bridgend Police Station, and will be used for detainees from across Bridgend and immediate surrounding areas. Assistant Chief Constable Julian Kirby said: “This development is vital for policing across the region. We are building an infrastructure which will enable us to meet today’s policing demands, but also those of the future. The facility will house investigation teams in a fi t for purpose environment which will make how we investigate and deal with detainees on a daily basis much more effi cient and enhance the Criminal Justice process.”

Chief Superintendent Liane James, Divisional Commander for Bridgend, said: “Our presence right in the heart of Bridgend Town Centre is, and always will be, valued by us and is important to the area. We will retain our town centre presence.” Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, Alun Michael, said: “I am satisfi ed that this investment, handed on by the previous Police Authority, will greatly increase the effi ciency of the police service in South Wales and that the public will benefi t from the new development. The centralisation of some key functions together with the installation of appropriate equipment is expected to speed up the criminal justice process and improve the service for victims. I particularly welcome the scheduled installation of video link-up technology for vulnerable victims and witnesses to use when giving evidence during court cases.” Chief Superintendent Liane James, added: “Crime across Bridgend county borough hasn’t been this low for a generation – we are doing well. This new development will help us build on this success, to ensure the streets across the region continue to be safe, and that more and more criminals are put before the courts.” It is hoped the facility will be handed over to South Wales Police and fully operational in May 2014. Construction fi rm Willmott Dixon in Wales is responsible for the build. Neal Stephens, managing director of Willmott Dixon in Wales, said:

Tremorfa are proud to work in partnership with Wilmot Dixon and South Wales Police, in providing full consultancy across the SWP Bridwell’s for the design, supply, install and commission of the entire Electronic Security package:• Cell Call • Staff Affray Systems • Intercoms • CCTV • • Digital & Audio Recording • Access Control • Gate Automation •

The security system being supplied under each element with the exception of the interview recording has been developed in conjunction with the initial client specification and user brief. The brief was to design and supply robust systems that interface and work seamlessly together offering ease of use by the custody officers whilst maintaining independent operation and full functionality. This was a challenge that Tremorfa are equal to, and have exceeded the initial design brief and have excelled in providing systems that will meet the clients brief and will serve them well now and into the future. We are that confident in the systems being provided that we have offered SWP a cost effective all-inclusive maintenance package, that will cover the entire electronic security package 24/7 for a full five years and includes, 6 monthly planned maintenance visits and attendance to reactive calls within 2 hours, this again is a service that is second to none and further supports Tremorfa’s commitment to these projects. Tremorfa is a well-established company and one that thrives on challenges of this nature and we are looking forward to working with Wilmot Dixon and prospective new custodial clients in the future.

Lerwick Met Office Work has recently started at the new Lerwick Met Offi ce, the estimated £1.2 million project comprises construction of a new observatory and demoltion on completion of new building works. Associated works will include infrastructure. The Met Offi ce has had an observatory on Shetland since 1921 to undertake weather observations. Today it remains a key part of the Met Offi ce’s observation network responsible for putting up radiosondes (weather observation balloons), real time monitoring of observations, ozone monitoring (using a Dobson Spectrophotometer) and many other tasks. The new observatory will replace the existing one. The existing observatory will then be demolished and this area landscaped, the new building has been designed to fi t in with the vernacular architecture of Shetland. It has a pitched roof and colour cladding. Modular construction took place in Dublin and the building was shipped across to Shetland, Local sub-contractors have been used to support the scheme wherever possible. The site forms part of the Considerate Contractor scheme. This building will be ‘Breeam’ very good and has been built to Scottish Building Standards The Met-Offi ce will be used by third party users for collaboration working and will offer occupants a fi t for purpose modern facility. The main drivers behind the project were to improve energy effi ciency, reduce maintenance costs and to safeguard a future presence on the island.

Extraspace manufactured the building in Dublin and the modules spent a total of 16 hours at sea on 2 crossings and 8 hours on the road and when they arrived on site they were all installed in one day and the lorries were back on the evening sailing again. Our contract includes all associated site works including the demolition of the old facility as soon as the new building is operational. We are also carrying out infrastructure refurbishment works including cabling and duct work to BGS (British Geological Society) units some 300m away from the main observatory.

We are delighted to be involved with this project and working with the Met office team has been a successful partnership and an excellent facility has been delivered on time and within budget. Our best wishes go to all at the met office both in Exeter and in Shetland and we hope they enjoy the new facility. Luton & Dunstable Hospital Fertility Centre Works have now completed on the Dunstable University Hospital’s Fertility Centre, the new dedicated NHS fertility centre has opened in Luton’s Lewsey Road next to the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (L&D). The L&D Hospital’s Fertility Centre will provide a dedicated and welcoming environment for a comprehensive range of fertility services including IVF in partnership with the World-renowned Bourn Hall Clinic in Cambridge. Miss Shahnaz Akbar, who is the L&D’s senior fertility consultant, had a strong vision for a dedicated fertility centre at L&D when she joined L&D in 2008. She explains why the new facility was required, “Patients need to attend the clinic for frequent appointments and we wanted to provide a comfortable environment staffed by people who are empathetic to the needs of fertility patients. Fertility care is a specialist area of medicine and requires a number of tests to ascertain the causes of infertility. Until now we have had to refer IVF patients to tertiary centres, over 40 miles away, for all of their appointments making it diffi cult for some couples to access treatment.” If patients need IVF treatment the L&D has partnered with Bourn Hall Clinic, Cambridge to provide a satellite IVF service. This partnership will reduce travelling for patients by allowing consultations and monitoring appointments to be made locally at the L&D Fertility Centre with just the delicate egg collection and embryo transfer procedures taking place at Bourn Hall. Mrs Melanie Chalk, General Manager for women’s services at the L&D said, “The L&D Fertility Centre will be able to provide dedicated support in an environment that can offer the relevant tests in one place without the requirement for patients to have to visit multiple locations and healthcare professionals. “If patients choose the L&D’s Fertility centre for IVF treatment they only need two appointments at Bourn Hall in Cambridge and all other assessments and monitoring is carried out at the L&D. This new arrangement with the world-renowned Bourn Hall clinic is focused on the needs of patients and ensures continuity during each visit to the L&D’s Fertility Centre. We are very proud of what we have achieved for our patients and the

local community and look forward to welcoming patients to the new unit.” Fran Rose-Smith of Bourn Hall Clinic Cambridge say, “We are delighted to be working with the L&D Hospital and its Fertility Centre. This relationship provides patients with a smooth and consistent treatment pathway which will provide the best conditions for a positive outcome.” Bourn Hall has an international reputation for its IVF treatment. It was co-founded by IVF pioneers Steptoe and Edwards and remains at the forefront of fertility medicine. It offers a range of fertility treatments to NHS and self-funded patients. The new Fertility Centre at the Luton&Dunstable Hospital was opened by a very important little person. Wielding a giant pair of scissors, three-year-old Noah Huxford of Linslade did the honours as his proud mum Zena looked on. Noah was born with the help of IUI (intra-uterine insemination) treatment when his mother was 45. She said: “This should send a message to older women that the L&D are there to help.” Specialist fertility services are now available to local people in a dedicated unit closer to home. In the past IVF (in vitro fertilisation) patients were refered to tertiary centres 40 miles away which made it diffi cult for some couples to access treatment. Spokesman Barry Mayes said: “ “We have recently formed a partnership with Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic in Cambridgeshire who played a key role in achieving the world’s fi rst successful test-tube baby in 1978. “By opening this new fertility centre at the L&D the majority of IVF care can be provided locally – which is great news for our patients.” The Project Team Client-Luton & Dunstable Hospital Plans by- Luton & Dunstable Hospital Quantity Surveyor- Beacon Project Services (UK) Limited Main Contractor- Marlow Builders Limited

Urgent Care Centre at St Helier Hospital Work is now complete on a £5.5 million project to expand and improve the A&E (accident and emergency) and urgent care centre at St Helier Hospital (where patients who do not need emergency, lifesaving care are treated). The centre, which was opened in August 2011 and sees over 2,000 patients each month, is based next to the A&E department and treats people who come to hospital with minor injuries, such as cuts and sprains, allowing the busy A&E to focus on people with more serious conditions. The £5.5 million work to expand the unit, which has been funded by the Department of Health, began last summer and is now almost complete, with just the construction of the new waiting room, reception and impressive entrance and canopy to complete. As part of the improvement works the entrance to A&E and the urgent care centre is going to be combined at the front of the hospital – making it even easier for patients to access the department quickly. The new entrance and canopy will replace the current temporary entrance. And once inside, patients and visitors will see how the project has provided a whole host of improvements throughout the unit. This includes opening 17 new bays where patients are treated, including three ambulance ‘streamer’ bays (where patients who come into the department in an ambulance undergo their initial assessment). Nine new bays have also been opened in the urgent care centre. The waiting room and reception area have been expanded and refurbished, as have the plaster rooms (where broken bones are put in plaster casts) and the whole centre has new fl oors and new ceilings throughout.

In addition, they have spent £300,000 creating a new dedicated children’s (paediatric) A&E and £500,000 on the latest computer system to track patients, their medical history, treatment plans and tests. Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive of Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals, said: “I am delighted that work is now underway on the fi nal phase of this project. “It is excellent news for our hospital and will provide long-lasting benefi ts for our patients, who will receive the urgent treatment they require in a welcoming and modern facility – one that we are all really proud of. “We are seeing more and more patients every year and it is vital that we run our departments as smoothly and effectively as we can. By creating extra space in the unit, revising the layout of the department and refurbishing it completely, we’ll be able to continue that work. “The completion of the entrance will be the fi nishing touch to a truly splendid centre, which will only help us continue to provide excellent care for our patients.” By increasing the size of the unit, the hospital can treat up to 13,500 extra patients a year, which will also allow us to introduce new staff into the centre to treat more complex cases. Executive Director of Chicester Festival Theatre announced this time last year that Arts Council England (ACE) confi rmed a commitment of £12million towards the theatres RENEW campaign. This remarkable endorsement of the organisation’s ongoing artistic and commercial success, and the RENEW project’s aim to restore and upgrade the Festival Theatre, immediately unlocks an additional £8million in pledged local support from businesses, trusts and individuals, and, most notably, from West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council who have pledged £1.5million and £500,000 respectively. Alan Finch, Executive Director, Chichester Festival Theatre, said: “This news is the icing on the cake in our 50th anniversary year and the result of two years of hard work by our development team and our dedicated RENEW Campaign Committee. We are incredibly grateful to Arts Council England for this extraordinary endorsement of our ambitious plan of restoration and improvement. The Festival Theatre is now operating on a scale way beyond what was envisaged when it was built and opened in 1962. Its ability to develop and prosper, with a renewed reputation for artistic and commercial success, is a source of pride to everyone here. Jonathan Church and I are committed to making this project work and ensuring that the Festival Theatre is here for the next 50 years and beyond. The theatre has, throughout its 50 years, enjoyed remarkably loyal support from local people and businesses and the degree to which they have stepped up to support this campaign, even in this current fi nancial climate, is overwhelming.” Sally Abbott, Regional Director, said, “The South East has a reputation for nurturing and supporting and encouraging locally recognised and world renowned arts and culture. The capital funding proposed for Chichester Festival Theatre will ensure that they have the best possible facilities to produce world class theatre for local, national and international audiences.” The main building contract for the RENEW redevelopment at Chichester Festival Theatre has been awarded to Osborne, a company with strong links to the West Sussex area.

Osborne entered into a competitive tender process with 11 other contractors in March 2012 and was offi cially awarded the contract for the Theatre’s RENEW project in November. The company began work on site at the beginning of January. The redevelopment will incorporate essential repairs to the Festival Theatre, a new extension, increased seating capacity, improved access and public facilities, improved backstage facilities and changes to make the building more energy effi cient. Executive Director of Chichester Festival Theatre, Alan Finch, said: “We are delighted to confi rm that Osborne will be undertaking the main building work for our RENEW redevelopment. Their submission demonstrated an impressive understanding of the skills required to fulfi l the redevelopment of our Grade II * listed building, coupled with an impressive track record of other projects. We’re particularly pleased that we have been able to appoint a company with strong links to our region.” Although Osborne’s head offi ce is now in Reigate, the company has had a base in Chichester for very many years. It has worked on many projects in the region and is currently working on the Shoreham Harbour footbridge, the new G-Block at Chichester College, Worthing College, Portsmouth’s Northern Road bridge replacement and the Quayside Education Centre in Gosport. Osborne was set up nearly 50 years ago by civil engineer Geoffrey Osborne, who had a keen interest in Chichester Festival Theatre. Cardigan Castle In 2011 the £11m scheme to rescue Cardigan Castle, which was built in the 11th century, was awarded £4.5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and a few months later it was awarded £4.7m by the European Regional Development Fund, through the Welsh Government. Last year, a Communities Asset Transfer grant of nearly £750,000 was granted with fi nancial support from Cadw, The Prince’s Regeneration Trust and Ceredigion County Council. The Cadwgan Building Preservation Trust, which has campaigned for 14 years to save the site, now needs to raise over £150,000 by the end of 2014 to secure the project. The money will make sure the £11m project can be completed. The ramparts of the castle, a scheduled ancient monument and Grade I listed building with a 13th-century medieval tower, hosted the fi rst Eisteddfod in 1176 but for years it stood crumbling at the riverside gateway to the town centre. In July, work began on the site that also includes a Grade II listed Georgian mansion attached in 1827 and historic gardens. Cardigan Castle is among a handful of remaining stone castles built by Welsh princes and has strong links to well-known fi gures in Welsh medieval history. Dating back to the 11th century, the Castle was the location of a festival hosted by Prince of Deheubarth Lord Rhys ap Gruffydd in 1176, an event that has become known as the fi rst Eisteddfod in Wales. The gardens were laid out in the early 19th century and are on Cadw’s Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. They include a number of rare specimen trees and endangered species of bat. Andrew Scott Construction Company has been awarded the £6M contract to develop the site of Cardigan Castle to become one of Wales’ biggest tourist at-

tractions. Mark Davies, Andrew Scott’s Site Project Manager says; ‘We are very pleased to have been awarded this contract, we are very close to the project and look forward to deliver over the next year. We understand that the community is very important to the project and to us and will be looking to hire local companies and individuals to help in our works.’ The successful company was also awarded the contract to repair the walls of the Castle which started in July 2012 and includes stabilising the Castle wall using a number of measures including rock anchors and the construction of a new retaining wall within the Castle grounds. The fi rst segment of Cardigan Castle’s racking shores was removed with a fi rework fanfare on Friday the 8th of March. A celebratory atmosphere surrounded the Strand as town mayor Cllr Catrin Miles fi red the fi rst blowtorch to cut through the metal framework which has surrounded the castle since 1975. With the crowd giving the countdown, a giant crane lifted away the metal strut accompanied by cheers from onlookers. A choir from Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi provided the music. Afterwards, Cllr Miles said: “It really is a signifi cant day for the town and signals that things are really moving.” The remaining steel struts - technically called steel raking shores - will be removed over the coming weeks. Recently the remains of two vintage cars were unearthed in Cardigan Castle have excited classic car enthusiasts. The chassis, wheels and some of the original body components of a 1920s Armstrong Siddelley and a Morris car were found as workmen cleared the derelict garage behind Castle Green House. Also, Cardigan Castle has recently launched their new website. The website includes a detailed history of the 900-year-old castle plus a look forward to the £11m restored site being opened next year. It also includes information on

getting involved and updates on news and events. A special attraction is a timelapse video showing construction work. The site will be continually updated and will eventually include booking facilities for the self-catering accommodation, bed and breakfast accommodation, events and room hire. Over the next year, the site will be developed into a multi-functional facility for community and recreational use as well as for learning; including Welsh language, cultural, crafts, environmental and horticulture studies. There will be luxury accommodation for hire; a heritage centre with education facilities; a restaurant; an Eisteddfod garden; an open-air concert area, as well as rooms for hire for classes. The site is due to open in the Spring of 2014, an event that the whole of Cardigan, Wales and beyond look forward to. Haley Sharpe Design’s clientele are drawn from all areas of the heritage and cultural sector and we have been a leader in this specialised sector for more than 30 years. We have been involved in many projects that require the creation of new and dynamic exhibition experiences and exhibits within sensitive historic buildings and sites. We have developed successful and close working relationships with English Heritage and Royal Armouries on the implementation of projects within historic environments. Our track record of completed work for English Heritage includes new exhibitions and interpretation at Carisbrooke Castle, Framlingham Castle, Kenilworth Castle and Dover Castle. We have also been appointed to undertake and design and implementation of the visitor displays at the new Stonehenge Visitor Centre (scheduled to open in the autumn of 2013). With Royal Armouries we have completed projects at Fort Nelson and the White Tower. All of these projects have been achieved working with the client and conservation teams to maintain the fullest respect for architectural integrity. We were commissioned, in March 2012, on a design and manage basis, to develop the interpretative elements for the complete redevelopment of Cardigan Castle (for the Cadwgan Building Preservation Trust). Working closely with the sizable project team and architects (Purcell UK), we are in the process of developing a sensitive yet engaging scheme which will reveal the stories and histories behind key areas of the castle site. Our design approach utilises a dynamic mix of media, located

sensitively within the historic interiors and landscapes of the 12th century castle. AV presentations, artefact displays, signage and interpretative graphic elements have been developed to appeal to the spectrum of target audiences ranging across families, tourists, and local community groups. Our holistic solution includes an AV presentation that provides an overview of the Castle’s rich history and the key characters involved, including Lord Rhys, King Edward 1st and Oliver Cromwell, through to the demise of the Castle and the building of the regency Castle Green House that stands in the castle grounds today. The ‘Riches to Ruin’ gallery, a dramatic double-height space, demonstrates an area of fl oor collapse, and the building fabric will expose the ‘before’ and ‘after’ work of the restoration team. In this space, the story of Barbara Wood, the last private owner of the castle is told. The ‘Story of the Eisteddfod’ gallery explores the origins of the fi rst Eisteddfod hosted by Lord Rhys at Cardigan Castle in 1176 and follows the story to the vibrant and important cultural phenomenon it is today both nationally and internationally. Through this story the visitor can explore and celebrate the diversity of Welsh music, poetry and language. A temporary Exhibition Gallery will offer something new and fresh for repeat visitors to the site. An engaging ‘base’ exhibition will be displayed during breaks between temporary exhibitions that will explore the ‘History of Cardigan Town’. As in all projects, the team at HSD is looking to bring the stories contained in the historic building to life to engage with a wide audience that are looking to explore the history and enjoy the unique atmosphere of Cardigan Castle.

Work has now commenced on a £10M refurbishment and new build at the renowned Olympic Aquatics Centre. The Aquatics Centre will be transformed into a facility for both community and elite use. The temporary seating will be removed, leaving 2,500 seats-with the capacity to be increased to 3,500 for major competitions. The local community, club and schools will be able to use the Centre. A ‘leisure water’ facility will be development after the Games by the London Development Agency. The Aquatics Centre will also have a café alongside a new public plaza in front of the building. The Centre will be part of Stratford city and alongside with other projects in the area will help regenerate the lower valley. Two enormous cranes removed the fi nal elements of the temporary seating stands this morning, revealing the original Zaha Hadid designed building. The fi nal trusses which formed the spine of the temporary seating stands on either side of the Aquatics Centre were removed today as part of the work to transform the former Olympic site into Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Each truss weighed 172 tonnes and required two cranes weighing 800 tonnes and 750 tonnes to lift and lower the pieces to the ground. Dennis Hone, Chief Executive, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park said: “The former Olympic Park is being transformed in to a fantastic new public park. The £292million project to adapt the Park and take down the temporary venues, like the Aquatics Centre seating, is running on time and on budget. We will open the fi rst part of the Park this summer with a series of events in the north of the Park and the Copper Box opening to the public. The rest of the Park will open in phases through to spring 2014 when the Aquatics Centre will open and people will be able to swim in those fantastic Olympic-sized pools.” Balfour Beatty is working on the transformation of the Aquatics Centre, now the two seating stands have been removed work has started to install 3,000m² of glass along the sides of the Aquatics Centre allowing lots of natural light into the pool. When the Aquatics Centre opens in spring 2014 it will have a cafe and crèche, a dry dive training area and a full programme of aquatics activities from lane swimming and lessons to aquaaerobics, water polo and synchronized swimming. The Aquatics Centre will be operated by GLL on a 10 year lease. GLL is a London-based social enterprise which means that surpluses it makes are reinvested into sport and local communities. GLL is working with British Swimming to locate an elite swimming and diving programme in the Centre alongside community use. Going for a swim in the Aquatics Centre will be affordable, when the pool opens the price of a swim in the Olympic pools will be

the same as a swim in a local leisure Centre – currently around £4.30. Around 800,000 people are expected to make use of the Aquatics Centre from 2014. The Aquatics Centre will continue to host major swimming competitions, London has bid for the 2016 European Swimming Championships and the 2014 FINA Diving Championships which it hopes to host in the Aquatics Centre. Since taking control of the Park in November 2012, the Legacy Corporation has been undertaking a huge programme of work to transform the site and its iconic venues ready for public use. The £292m construction programme, one of the largest in Europe, is on track to deliver Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – a new part of London to live, work, visit and invest. The Park will soon begin to re-open in phases as works reach completion, starting with the offi cial opening of North Park in July 2013. This will include the Copper Box, London’s third largest arena at 2,743m2 (equivalent to 12 badminton courts), and the Unity Kitchen Café at Timber Lodge, a new community space with a stunning new playground and open spaces for visitors to walk, play and enjoy. Over the past six months, the Legacy Corporation has been getting its programme ‘Clear, Connect, Complete’ well underway to transform the Park from the Olympic event site to a new part of London. The programme is clearing Games-time overlay including temporary venues, walkways and stands, connecting the Park to the surrounding area with new roads and pathways and completing the Park’s venues and parkland to their legacy designs, ready to open its doors in full in spring 2014. Just as the Games were delivered across 10 years from bid to closing ceremony, the delivery of legacy is a 10 year programme and the works underway now will deliver a lasting legacy for east London. Construction on the Park has already brought over a thousand jobs to the area, 44 per cent of workers are from the local area and there are 60 apprentices on site – the highest number on any London site. In just a few months, the fi rst families will also begin moving into 2,818 homes, including 1,379 affordable homes on the site of the Athletes’ Village, to be known as East Village. Chobham Academy will also open this September, with a further three schools planned to be built on the Park over the coming years. Catering for swimmers of all abilities, from absolute beginners to Olympic champions, from April 2014 the Aquatics Centre will offer a wide-ranging programme of activities, including water polo, synchronised swimming, diving, triathlon and sub aqua. The facilities are second to none, so don’t be surprised to fi nd yourself rubbing shoulders with a champion in training. In 2012 the spectacular Aquatics Centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, provided the breath-taking backdrop to countless world records and Ellie Simmonds’ dramatic swim into the

Sir John Soanes Museum Phase 2 ‘The Museum That Time Forgot.’ Works have commenced on phase 2 of the Masterplan Core project entitled ‘Opening up the Soane.’ The key building works involve the restoration and opening to the public of entire second fl oor of the Museum (Sir John Soane’s Private apartments, unseen since his death in

1837), including the reinstatement of Soane’s bathroom; bedroom; oratory; book passage; light well; model room and Mrs Soane’s morning room. The work will involve the recreation of and structural repair to partitions; alterations of the window encompassing signifi cant external structural masonry; joinery restoration including dismantling and reinstatement of original elements; purpose made bespoke joinery; specialist plaster repairs and new lath and plaster ceilings; conservation of historic decorative schemes including restoration of surviving original hand-painted wallpaper and recreation of both wallpaper and specialist paint fi nishes; external redecorations and repairs; opening-up former skylight and associated lead roof works; conservation of antique glass panels; reinstatement of the original stained glass scheme within the private apartment and in the north drawing room; reinstatement of the niche on the staircase to its original depth; removal of the service pipes and boxing in; mechanical and electrical service

installations. The re-opening of Number 12 is just the beginning of the OUTS project. Later this year, work will commence on Phase II, which will see the restoration of Sir John Soane’s private apartments on the second fl oor of No.13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields – his Bedchamber, Bathroom, Oratory, Book Passage, Model Room and Eliza Soane’s Morning Room. These have never before been open to the public, having been removed to provide staff accommodation shortly after Soane’s death in 1837. Phase III will see the provision of the Foyle Study Room, in the current New Picture Room (itself a later addition to the Museum), as well as the restoration of Soane’s AnteRoom, Catacombs and the curved link passage behind No.12 that will make a huge difference to accessibility across the Museum. This will complete this exciting project to restore as much as possible the unique arrangement that Soane created in his “permanently magical” house. Sir John Soane’s Museum was formerly the home of the neo-classical architect Sir John Soane. It holds many drawings and models of his projects and the collections of paintings, drawings and antiquities that he assembled. The Museum is in the Holborn district of central London, England, on Lincoln’s Inn Fields. The museum is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

No. 12 (between 1792 and 1794), externally a plain brick house. After becoming Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy in 1806, Soane purchased No. 13, the house next door, today the Museum, and rebuilt it in two phases in 1808-09 and 1812. In 1808-09 he constructed his drawing offi ce and “museum” on the site of the former stable block at the back, using primarily top lighting. In 1812 he rebuilt the front part of the site, adding a projecting Portland Stone facade to the basement, ground and fi rst fl oor levels and the centre bay of the second fl oor. Originally this formed three open loggias, but Soane glazed the arches during his lifetime. Once he had moved into No. 13, Soane rented out his former home at No. 12 (on his death it was left to the nation along with No. 13, the intention being that the rental income would fund the running of the Museum). After completing No.13, Soane set about treating the building as an architectural laboratory, continually remodelling the interiors. In 1823, when he was over 70, he purchased a third house, No. 14, which he rebuilt in 1823-24. This project allowed him to construct a picture gallery, linked to No.13, on the former stable block of No. 14. The front main part of this third house was treated as a separate dwelling and let as an investment; it was not internally connected to the other buildings. When he died No. 14 was bequeathed to his family and passed out of the Museum’s ownership.

Soane demolished and rebuilt three houses in succession on the north side of Lincoln’s Inn Fields. He began with

The Soane Museum is now a national centre for the study of architecture. From 1988-2005 a programme of restoration within the Museum was carried out under Peter Thornton and then Margaret Richardson with spaces such as the Drawing Rooms, Picture Room, Study and Dressing Room, Picture Room Recess and others being put back to their original colour schemes and in most cases having their original sequences of objects reinstated; Soane’s three courtyards were also restored with his pasticcio (a column of architectural fragments) being reinstated in the Monument Court at the heart of the Museum. In 1997 the Trustees purchased the main house at No. 14 with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund. The house has now been restored (2006–09) and has enabled the Museum to expand its educational activities, to re-locate its Research Library in that house and to create a Robert Adam Study Centre where Soane’s collection of 9,000 Robert Adam drawings is housed in purpose-designed new cabinets by Senior and Carmichael. The most famous spaces in the house are those at the rear of the Museum - the Dome Area, Colonnade and Museum Corridor. These are mostly toplit and provide some idea in miniature form of the ingenious lighting contrived by Soane for the toplit banking halls at the Bank of England. The ingeniously designed Picture Gallery has walls composed of large ‘moveable planes’ (like large cupboard doors)that allow it to house three times as many items as a space of this size could normally accommodate (the original hang in this room was reinstated in January 2011). When visiting, it is necessary to request the planes to be opened and wait for a group to gather before this is done.

like those in fan vaulting. It is decorated in a rich ‘Pompeian’ red. The Study contains a collection of Roman architectural fragments and the two external courtyards, the Monument Court and Monk’s Yard contain an array of architectural fragments, Classical in the Monument Court with its central column or ‘pasticcio’ representing Architecture and Gothic in the Monk’s Yard, fi lled with medieval stonework from the Palace of Westminster.

The more domestic rooms of No. 13 are at the front of the house, many of them highly unusual, but often in subtle ways. The domed ceiling of the Breakfast Room, inset with convex mirrors, has infl uenced architects from around the world. The Library-Dining Room refl ects the infl uence of Etruscan tombs and perhaps even gothic design in its repertoire of small pendants

The scheme comprises construction of 9 two-bedroom, single storey alms-houses, laundry and garden store buildings, vehicular access and pedestrian. The works include enabling, infrastructure, sewer systems and landscaping. There are nine similar properties being built on the previous scrub woodland site to create residential facilities for the residents of The Day Foundation. Working in partnership to save ASDA money everyday

As part of the supermarket build ASDA employed ISG to act as Main Contractor for the store fit-out, who in turn employed BAS, who are part of The Energy Solutions Group (ESG), to act as a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) Control Specialist for the control of the HVAC Plant and Store Lighting. ESG have enjoyed a unique collaborative partnership with ASDA for more than 15 years - a large number of these with ISG - covering many aspects of the ASDA business.During this time ESG have worked closely with ASDA in establishing and developing a number of different Design Specifications for the various formats that ASDA use for its Supermarkets, Superstores, Living Stores and Home Shopping Hubs. It was with this background that ESG approached the new build at Carlisle. At project inception, ESG set out to provide a bespoke design solution which fitted the store’s architecture and layout while also ensuring compliance with the relevant Design Specification. The control of the Store HVAC Plant and Lighting was carried out via the on-site Building Energy Management System. This consisted of 2-off separate outstation panels installed in locations local to Main Plant, which were linked via a Local Area Network to achieve a fully integrated system. Each outstation panel contained the latest Siemens Desigo™ PX Hardware which was programmed in accordance with the site specific Design Specification.

The engineering of various algorithms ensured that design conditions were maintained within strict parameters, whilst also ensuring that plant was utilised in the most energy efficient manner to maintain ASDA’s commitment to cutting their direct carbon emissions. Energy savings measures engineered and commissioned within the BEMS included:•

Demand based control of main ventilation and heating plant

Speed control of extract fans based on temperature

Motion detection control of air conditioning units

By linking on-site maintenance activities to remote management capability, we have worked with ASDA to optimise estate performance and realise significant energy and carbon savings year-on-year

With the opening of a new 25,000 sq.ft supermarket on the St Nicholas Gate Retail Park in Carlisle and the creation of jobs for up to two hundred people (replacing the nearby store which employed 29 people) ASDA continued its drive to provide affordable convenient shopping whilst also maintaining its commitment to provide jobs in the local community.

Brin Sheridan, Chief Operating Officer ESG

Robust Project Management, an assurance to deliver the project on time and within budget, an unrelenting commitment to provide the best quality products and exacting standards of commissioning and verification ensured that the project met and, wherever possible, exceeded the client’s requirements and expectations. Additional facility was incorporated within the BEMS for connection through the client’s Broadband to allow remote access to the site for the incumbent Facilities Management Team and ESG’s own Remote Monitoring Bureau (Eco Centre) via ASDA Integrated Maintenance Services (AIMS) system. This facility is currently installed within each and every one of ASDA’s 500+ stores in the UK and is instrumental in improving operational performance leading to reduced systems failures, targeted service response, and reduced store waste through proactive system monitoring.

Risk Assessment

CINEMA SCREENS LIMITED

A risk assessment is an important step in protecting your workers and your business, as well as complying with the law. It helps you focus on the risks that really matter in your workplace – the ones with the potential to cause harm. In many instances, straightforward measures can readily control risks, for example, ensuring spillages are cleaned up promptly so people do not slip or cupboard drawers kept closed to ensure people do not trip. For most, that means simple, cheap and effective measures to ensure your most valuable asset – your workforce – is protected.

The law does not expect you to eliminate all risk, but you are required to protect people as far as is ‘reasonably practicable’. This guide tells you how to achieve that with minimum fuss. What is risk assessment?

trol measures.

A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable con-

Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court. You are legally required to assess the risks in your workplace so that you put in place a plan to control the risks.

How do I do a risk assessment? To do a risk assessment, you need to understand what, in your business, might cause harm to people and decide whether you are doing enough to prevent that harm. Once you have decided that, you need to identify and prioritise putting in place, appropriate and sensible control measures. Start by: • • • • •

identifying what can harm people in your workplace; identifying who might be harmed and how; evaluating the risks and deciding on the appropriate controls, taking into account the controls you already have in place; recording your risk assessment; reviewing and updating your assessment.

This is not the only way to do risk assessment as there are no fi xed rules about how a risk assessment should be carried out. However, we believe that the Five Steps guidance provides the most straightforward way for most businesses Don’t overcomplicate the process. In many organisations, the risks are well known and the necessary control measures are easy to apply. You probably already know whether, for example, you have employees who move heavy loads and so could harm their backs, or where people are most likely to slip or trip. If so, check that you have taken reasonable precautions to avoid injury. If you run a small organisation and you are confi dent you understand what’s involved, you can do the assessment yourself. You don’t have to be a health and safety expert.
