Smash golf, a hybrid between tennis and golf, is taking off at Duran Golf Club as a fun way to welcome kids, families and school groups to walk the course, even along with real golfers. Invented and patented by Brevard golf pro Daril Pacinella, smash golf uses a traditional looking tennis racquet and different color of rubber golf balls which players get to keep. A putter attachment is used on the

greens with players holding either side of the tennis racquet. The cost is $12 for adults, $6 for juniors under 12, with equipment rentals $6 for adults, $5 for juniors. Players get to keep the multi-colored solid rubber golf balls. The fledgling sport is perfect for Duran because of the par-3 course, golf pro Matt Morrison said. “The good thing about us is the short course is ideal for this type of sport. Most of the holes are 100 yards or less. Presort Std U.S. Postage PAID Orlando, FL Permit No. 1979

There are only two par 3 holes you couldn’t hit it on the green in one shot,’’ he said. Getting the ball out there accurately takes a bit of practice either underhand, side-arm and overhand, he said. “If you really want the distance, the overhand is the way to go. There’s still a

Cup of cheer is filled with beer at evening weekly fun run BY JILL BLUE-GAINES

Most 5K runs start in the morning to beat the heat and runners hydrate with cool cups of water often handed to them by cheering volunteers. The cause for the Viera Long Doggers at 7 p.m. Thursdays is fun and fitness and that cool cup is filled with craft beer. It’s an event to remember as participants meet up, toss their car keys in a basket, mug for a group photo and then take off alone or with kids in strollers or on bikes. “It’s fun to see the families come here to run in a social running club,” said Long Doggers manager Gerald Stout, who works with Run For Brews organizers. An average of 50 to 85 runners show up each week

Dawn Russo is an expert in women’s hair. As district manager for Imperial Salon locations in Suntree and Indian Harbour Beach, she knows that the way a woman’s hair looks is often integral to her confidence and identity. That’s what made her Stage IV invasive lobular carcinoma breast cancer diagnosis in March 2014 especially devastating. Russo knew she would lose her hair due to the cancer-fighting treatments. Like most women who experience the same diagnosis, Russo immediately went out and bought several wigs. They were expensive, but she couldn’t stand the idea of not having any hair. “Losing your hair is incredibly traumatic, even if you know it is because of treatment that is saving VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Yvette Gioia/Gioia Photography your life,” said Russo, who After her own experience losing her hair from breast cancer underwent six rounds of treatments, Dawn Russo started WIGS, a nonprofit providing wigs and chemotherapy, radiation other support to other women fighting the disease. treatment and a double uncomfortable and just not mastectomy before being off, it was empowering,” natural. Many people simply want to know how to help. Russo has added a “donate” button on the WIGS website, and is also planning some upcoming fundraising events. On Thursday, July 16, WIGS will host a fundraiser at Tuscany Grill, 7640 N. Wickham Rd., to benefit the cause. The Painting for WIGS event will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $40 per person. The painting event will be hosted by artist Michelle Nicodemus with Art Tango. “I just want to get the word out and also give women some support and confidence during such an overwhelming time,” Russo said. Dual personalities met both ends of the spiritual spectrum BY LINDA WIGGINS

Together, they were the yin and yang of church “cosenior pastors,” they dubbed themselves so as not to have one rank higher than the other. Rev. Terri Hill was the warm one, centered on feelings, whose messages at the pulpit these past 12 years at Suntree United Methodist Church always had a practical life application. Husband Rev. John Hill’s messages were often more like a lesson in religious history, much more attractive to analytic, left-brain thinkers no more interested in a lingering hug after the service than he was. “It was perfect having them both because depending on your personality, one would resonate the best for you,” said Mike Renfro, a close friend of the Hills and one of the SUMC lay and clergy leaders to speak at the Hills’ June 14 send-off celebration at the church. Terri Hill will be the senior pastor at Key West United Methodist Church, where the family owns a cottage and traveled to frequently through the years. John Hill will teach college-level world religions.

Holy Trinity football team will play six home games next season BY CARL KOTALA

The Holy Trinity football team is going to be awfully young next season. But the Tigers are going to have more home games so their fans can watch the team grow. Perhaps, as coach Nate Hooks Jr. suggested in an email, you might even get to see the Tigers pull a few rabbits out of a hat. Holy Trinity will play six home games this upcoming season after playing only two (another game was rained out) during its last campaign. The Kickoff Classic will take place Aug. 21 in Fort Lauderdale against Pembroke Pines Charter with the regular-season opener set for Aug. 28 at home against Cornerstone.

A week later, the Tigers will travel to Jacksonville to play Harvest before heading into their bye week. Holy Trinity will return to action in Week 4 on Sept. 18 with a home game against rival Melbourne Central Catholic, one of just two district games the Tigers will play. Weeks 5 and 6 will see Holy Trinity on the road against Cocoa Beach and Trinity Christian (Deltona) before the Tigers return for back-to-back home contests against Agape Christian and Archbishop Curley. After that, it’s out to Orlando for a game against Lake Highland Prep before closing it out with two more home games against John Carroll (district opponent) and Somerset.

While having only two district opponents can be a good thing, the Tigers figure to have it tough with MCC and John Carroll, both of which were ranked in the top 10 in the state last year. At this year’s spring game, the Tigers had a lineup that featured one seventh-grader, four eighth-graders and two freshmen on defense. That’s certainly a young team to be playing a varsity level schedule with, but Hooks is determined to let the young Tigers shine come this fall. And if they can do that, they just might surprise a few people. “We’ve got our work cut out for us. We’ve got a challenge,” Hooks said. “But challenges, and building character are a couple of the reasons you get into this profession in the first place.” VV

Last year, they went undefeated in the regular season for the first time in school history and then won their first-ever district championship. Come the fall, the Viera High football team is going to be taking a major step up in competition. “We wanted to test the kids so they could see more playoff-type teams,” Hawks coach Kevin Mays said. “Week in and week out, it’s going to be tough.” The Hawks’ 2016 schedule looks like a list of perennial Brevard County powerhouses, with a few out of town — and one big out of state — games thrown in for good measure. After playing Eau Gallie in the Kickoff Classic, the Hawks are set to open the season Aug. 28 at home against Rockledge. From there, the Hawks are

off to play in Allen, Tex. on Sept. 4 before returning for games against Merritt Island (home), Lakeland/Kathleen (road), Cocoa (road), Melbourne (district game/ road), Palm Bay (home), and Martin County (district game/road). After a bye week, Viera will finish with home games against South Fork (district game) and Winter Springs. While it will certainly be tough to go undefeated against that bunch, should the Hawks qualify for the playoffs for just the second time in school history, they will know they have been tested. “Everybody said we played a soft schedule (last year),” Viera quarterback Hayden Kingston said. “The junior class (who are) going to be seniors really wanted to show what we’re about. We really look forward to playing the Palm Bays, the Merritt Islands, the Allens and the Cocoas of the

world and showing the state what we can do, show them we’re not just a one-trick pony.” Viera’s game against Allen, Texas will certainly represent a big challenge. The Eagles finished 16-0 last season, winning the Texas Class 6A state championship and extending their winning streak to 43 games. Allen has won the title in the state’s largest classification for three consecutive years. Only five other teams in the state have ever done that. Playing in a big stadium on the road will be an experience the Hawks will never forget. “We were just looking at traveling,” Mays said. “One phone call led to another and Allen offered us a game to come out there. They play in front of 18,000 people. It will be a neat experience for us to go out there and see what it’s like.” VV

Viera/Suntree Little League All-Stars are off and running BY CARL KOTALA

It promises to be another banner year for the Viera/ Suntree Little League All-Stars. The teams were picked in mid-June and began playing their district tournaments toward the end of the month, with some tournaments stretching into early July. Last season saw the VSLL win four district championships, with the Juniors baseball team going on to win the state title and coming within one more victory of advancing to the World Series.

“We think we’ve got a very strong (group) this year and as a first-year president, I’m just extremely excited,” said John Glendinning. “All of the managers this year were selected earlier in the process so that they could go out and scout the talent and be more educated when it came to picking the All-Stars.” Beginning last August, Glendinning and VSLL player agent Ken O’Neill worked on revamping the way the league picked its All-Stars. They picked a team of managers to re-evaluate the process, then vetted

it through their current board and an external board. The idea was to make the whole process more transparent for the public, and for the league as a whole. For example, they scrapped the one-day tryout for the All-Stars in order to give kids a chance to impress coaches more with their body of work. Voting was done among the collective group of VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala All-Star coaches, Jack Malatino delivers a pitch during a recent practice for the Viera/Suntree which created the Little League All-Stars 9-10 Gold team. New Viera East GM happy to be home again BY CARL KOTALA

It’s great to be back home. That’s what Tim Melloh, the new general manager of Viera East Golf Club, had to say about coming back to Brevard County. The 54-year-old not only graduated from Cocoa High School, he also spent a yearand-a-half at what is now called Eastern Florida State College before embarking on a career in golf, the last 16 years of which were spent at Florida State’s Seminole Golf Course. Now he’s working at a course he’s very familiar with, having played it while visiting his father and sister, who still live in Cocoa. “I love this golf course, the facility here,” Melloh said. Though he has not made any sweeping changes, Melloh does have plans to help the course moving forward. “The one thing I was able to do is recommend to the board, which they approved, is that we’ve hired a golf course architect to produce a master plan for future renovations out here,” he said.

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Tim Melloh took over as general manager at Viera East Golf Club in February. He is a Cocoa High graduate.

Having a master plan, Melloh explained, would help give the board not only a recommendation of which

order the improvements should be made, but also a cost analysis of how much the work would cost.

“It’s a plan that could be done next year, or it could be done seven or eight years from now,” he said. “It just

depends on what the board chooses to do. At some point and time, I feel as though the board will want to re-invest in the golf course.” One of the things that made the job so intriguing was the capability for growth that Melloh sees in Viera East, which currently averages between 44,000 to 46,000 rounds a year. “The potential here is we could probably grow this to 55,000 to 60,000,” he said “The key to doing that, though, would be making your golf course strong during the months when the snow birds aren’t here.” One avenue toward that is reminding people that Viera East is not a private club. “I think a lot of the marketing we’re going to be doing in the future is really letting people know that the public is welcome here, and that there is plenty of availability for them,” he said. “We have some very affordable rates and a quality golf course. “I think most people in the community who have played the golf course will recognize our layout as being one of the best in the county.” VV

Versatile Viera Volleys claim Space Coast Tennis League crown BY MARY BROTHERTON

The Viera Volleys are the Spring 2015 A3 Mixed Doubles Champions of the Space Coast Tennis League. The team will advance to A2 next season to face new competition. The league plays a 15week season with teams in 13 locations, and more than 1,000 adult players throughout Brevard County. The league holds tennis matches for mixed, men, seniors, women and doubles. Team captain Chris McIntyre said, “Most of us play to have fun and we don’t take it too seriously, but winning makes everything better.” The Viera Volleys edged out their closest competitor from Titusville by just two

points overall. “Winning was a chore,” McIntyre said. “When we start the season, I try to give play time to everyone but when we got to the end of the season, I have to decide if I should play only the best or those who had not played as much. One gentleman on our team had not played in a while, but he came to practice with his wife. He made my decision easier, because in the end it was his choice. He told me to go for the championship and play the best players.” McIntyre credits his cocaptains and the entire team with the championship. “It was a group effort and we were blessed enough to not have key injuries during our season.”

Space Coast Boom debut with third-place finish

Five of the 18 returning players are out with injuries. Once a member signs up to play, there is no commitment past one season. McIntyre said some have played in the league a number of years. Viera Volleys team members range in age from their 20s to well into their 60s. “We know each other from churches and other community activities,” McIntyre said. “We’re really just a bunch of folks who enjoy tennis and playing together. It has turned into a sort of social club that’s based on tennis. We do other things together, but conversation always comes back to tennis.” For more information about the league, go to spacecoasttennis.com. VV

Members of the Space Coast Boom girls lacrosse team pose after their third-place finish at the LAX Blast Orlando tournament. There are 34 girls on the team, including six from Viera High and three from Holy Trinity. BY CARL KOTALA

The Space Coast Boom Lacrosse Club had quite an impressive debut at the LAX Blast Orlando Tournament. Formed just three months earlier, the team made up of 34 high school girls from across Brevard County — including six from Viera High and three from Holy Trinity — finished third in the eightteam event. “The girls did awesome,” assistant coach and team manager Tommy Jones said. “They played really hard. They played like a team.” Playing from Viera High were Alyssa Bache, Maggie Bowen, Lyanna Thomas, Rylee Thomas, Sara Balgo and Alina Turillo. Holy Trinity players included Elisa Slattery, Olivia McHenry and Sarah Zeger. Jones, who co-owns Viera Lacrosse and Sport on Murrell Road, said he formed

the Space Coast Boom after hearing from a number of his young female customers that there was a need for a high school-aged club team. “They had all these competition teams for boys, but there was nothing for the girls,” Jones said. “We opened up a lacrosse store, and I’d have girls come in to buy stuff and they always talked about how they didn’t have anything to play for in the summer. They always talked about having to travel to Vero (Beach) or Orlando. I had a couple of girls come to me and say, ‘Hey, can you help us build a team?’ ” Jones put the word out and soon he had girls from Viera, Holy Trinity, Rockledge, Melbourne, MCC and Edgewood all on board with Rob Thomas serving as the team’s head coach. “They all get along and they play with top-level competition,” Jones said. Local fencers break through at major tournament BY CARL KOTALA

The Central Florida Division Fencing Championships proved to be quite a breakthrough for three members of the Genesis Fencing Club. Naomi Bucur won the

Épée Youth-10 Mixed championship, while her older sister, Rebekah, placed second in the Foil Youth-12 Mixed competition. Holy Trinity student Mason Sands also took second place in the Épée Senior Mixed tournament.

“It was their first major competition that they truly showed their full potential,” said Daniel Bucur, who owns, operates and coaches at the Genesis Fencing Club. Naomi Bucur said she was “a little surprised” she was able to win all nine of her

bouts in the tournament, especially after getting through a challenging final. “It was pretty close,” she said. “My opponent’s advantage was that she was a lefty. It was very tough. I was glad that I won that bout.” After taking a 7-2 lead, Naomi saw her opponent rally to tie the score at 7-7 before scoring the final three points for a 10-7 win. “I was excited, but at the same time, I was a little bit disappointed with myself,” she said. “My coach told me to do something … and I didn’t do it. So I was excited, but I was not as excited at the same time.” Still, the win will give her confidence as she moves up to the 11-year-old division. Rebekah, meanwhile, said she also was pleased with

her performance. “It’s the highest I’ve gotten in a big competition,” she said. Rebekah’s final match came against a girl she had faced in previous competitions. She was trailing 14-13 when the three-minute clock ran out. “I just wasn’t aware of the time,” she said. Rebekah and Naomi have been fencing for four to five years and should have a bright future ahead in the coming years. Sands, meanwhile, can take plenty of pride in the fact that not only did he get a second-place finish, the rising senior also got a national E rating, which had been his goal when he went to the Junior Olympics earlier this year. He is the only fencer at GFC to hold a national rating. VV

Suntree Country Club plants environmentally friendly turf BY MIKE GAFFEY

Suntree Country Club is replacing the grass on fairways and roughs of its 18-hole Classic course with a more environmentally friendly turf grass. When the Classic course reopens in August or September, its 75 acres of fairways and roughs will be covered with Celebration Bermuda grass, a popular, hardy hybrid that’s been planted at top golf courses around the country, said Jon Cockerham, director of golf course maintenance at Suntree. “It’s a quick grower, very efficient,” Cockerham said. “Its root system develops to where it stores lots of water, lots of energy. Over time, you start using less fertilizer, less water, less herbicide, less pesticide to take care of it. It’s an upfront expense, but in the long run it’s an advantage.” The greens will get a different replacement grass. Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda has a better root structure and is more resistant to disease, he said. In May, crews used two applications of Roundup herbicide to kill off the original turf grass, planted when the course first opened in 1975. Workers chopped up

rolls of new turf and sprigged greens first, then moved on to fairways and roughs, Cockerham said. “It’s player-friendly,” Cockerham said. “It’s very uniform. The ball sits up on it very nicely. It’s very soft. It’s got a great color to it. It’s the best of both worlds.” The Classic course was a tour stop for the Senior PGA Tour through the 1980s and early 1990s. The $300,000 regrassing effort is part of $2 million in Classic course improvements outlined in the private, member-owned club’s fiveyear capital plan, said Steve Lamontagne, the club’s general manager and a former PGA golfer. The club’s 18hole, Arnold Palmer-designed Challenge course will be regrassed at a later date, Lamontagne said. In 2014, the club at 1 Country Club Drive completed a four-year, $1.5 million irrigation project that installed new highdensity polyethylene piping throughout its Classic course. In addition to planting new grass at the driving range and chipping area, workers also added, rerouted and resurfaced golf cart paths and built a “sport court” near the tennis courts.

Steve Lamontagne, left, general manager of Suntree Country Club, and Jon Cockerham, director of golf course maintenance, stand at the eighth hole of the Classic course, which has been regrassed with Celebration Bermuda turf grass on its fairways and roughs.

The upgrades are meant to improve the golfing experience for current members and attract new ones, Lamontagne said. The club’s goal is to increase its golf membership from 450 to 525 members, he said. “As we reach 525 golf members, initiation fees will increase and a waiting list will start,” Lamontagne said. “This is the best time ever to get in this club.” For more information, call 321-242-6230 or go to suntree.com. Viera High siblings graduate from Naval Academy together BY KATIE PARSONS

The military community is often likened to a family — and in some cases, that is very literal. On May 22, siblings Theodore and Azure Augustus graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The brother-sister pair are graduates of Viera High School from the class of 2010 and the class of 2011, respectively. Azure Augustus graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry and was a member of the cheerleading team. Theodore Augustus graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Economics and was a member of the Navigator Club and the National Society of Black Engineers. Both graduates earned the commission of U.S. Marine Corps 2nd lieutenant. During their time at the academy, they took part in the Semper Fi Society and the Triad Christian Fellowship. “It’s been nice going through our military career together so far,” Azure Augustus said.

p o o c BUSINESSS Work starts on new Taco Bell, Pizza Hut in Suntree BY MIKE GAFFEY

A combination Taco Bell and Pizza Hut restaurant will be built on recently cleared land on North Wickham Road west of the Sunoco station near Tuscany Apartments. A 1,640-square-foot Taco Bell and a 1,960-squarefoot Pizza Hut will occupy the same building on the property, said Bruce Moia, president of MBV Engineering, which is working on the project. It’s the first phase of a development project that eventually will include a 4,000-square-foot retail complex, Moia said. The national restaurant chains are owned by Yum! Brands Inc., which also owns KFC. The closest Taco Bell to Suntree is a combination Taco Bell-Long John Silver’s

on Barnes Boulevard in Rockledge. The closest Pizza Hut is on U.S. 1 in Rockledge.

Moia said Yum! Brands often combines several of its restaurants into one

building. In Sebastian, a Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC are all under one roof, he noted. “I believe this one is going to be a little bit different,” Moia said. “This one will have a full Pizza Hut and a full Taco Bell as opposed to one restaurant that serves all three foods. I believe this is one of the protoypes that they’ve done.” Moia said an improving economy and home construction in Viera are luring commercial development to the area. “You’ve got The Fresh Market (specialty grocer) going up in Suntree and there’s other stuff in the works,” he said. “You’re going to see that Wickham Road corridor expanding here in the near future. With all the rooftops going up in Viera, they’re attracting a lot of commercial construction.” VV

Focus on financial reality rather than lottery dreams BY ALAN FRISHER, CDFA GUEST COLUMNIST

Have you ever daydreamed about winning the lottery? Or possibly inheriting $1 million — or more? What would you do if you won? Quit your job? Travel the world? Buy your dream car or vacation home? Allow me to be among the first to congratulate you on your lottery win or inheritance, but always remember that with money comes responsibility. A windfall of money requires some forethought into how to best protect and grow the new-found gain. There are many questions that must be answered, including: How do taxes play a role with my winnings? Considering my age, how can I best make my money last? Should I pay off debt? Should I help others who are less fortunate than me? If you are fortunate enough to win or inherit large sums of money, before you make any financial decisions, speak with three specific professionals — a financial advisor, a tax advisor and an estate planning attorney. A triangle is the strongest geometric shape because each side counts on the other side for balance and power. These three professionals make up your financial triangle when it comes to protecting and growing your money. Working together, these professionals can help you with every financial concern you have, and educate you on concerns that you didn’t even know you had. The financial advisor is often times the leader who recommends the other

to handle a huge financial windfall, but with the guidance from the three professionals, you can effectively understand the way that is best for you. VV

Your financial advisor will discuss possible investments for short-term and long-term planning, will understand how much debt you are in and advise the best strategies to pay off that debt. Your financial advisor will inform you how best to save and protect your money, depending on your tolerance for risk, and will also help financially prepare you for future concerns such as disability or death. This professional will help you look toward your future by focusing on your present situation. The role of a tax professional (possibly a CPA) is to be a consultant for good accounting practices and financial reporting, specifically with regard to tax savings and reducing costs (in business). Robert Rosenberger and wife, Monie, relax at the new GolfCarts Unlimited location at Viera Market Center. BY MIKE GAFFEY

Robert Rosenberger, general manager of the new GolfCarts Unlimited store at Viera Market Center, offered two reasons why his family’s business opened its third Brevard County location there on May 1. No. 1: GolfCarts Unlimited wanted to be the first store of its type in the cart-centric community. And No. 2: The Avenue Viera had a need for such a tenant. “The Avenue Viera actually approached us,” Rosenberger said. “They wanted our type of use here because of the need to provide different offerings for the male shopper. The general manager noticed the male shoppers sitting outside on the benches while the women were in the stores shopping. So he wanted a place that the men could go to, like a social gathering, just to walk and be able to hang out. So we’re trying to get set up here more for people to come in here socially and just hang out, too. Also, The Avenue Viera utilizes three golf carts for management, public safety and maintenance,

and we thought we could help with their program for carts.” In addition to being a mall man-cave, the shop at 6729 Colonnade Ave., Suite 113 offers new, reconditioned and used golf carts for sale and is an authorized dealer for Yamaha, Garia and Evolution carts. The store rents carts, stocks an extensive variety of cart accessories and parts and has a mechanic on duty to service ailing vehicles. Owners who want to add a personal touch to their ride can get their cart customized, too, Rosenberger said. “Our technician, Jimbo, will design your cart on a computer and you will be able to see your golf cart before we ever build it,” Rosenberger said. “As far as I know, nobody around here offers that. We can do logos or airbrush, all

kinds of extras.” Customers can drive their carts right up to the shop for repairs, which saves on cart pickup and delivery fees, Rosenberger said. The three-person Viera location joins a GolfCarts Unlimited at 880 Hospitality Way in Titusville and another at 5560 N. U.S. 1, south of Pineda Causeway. Rosenberger’s parents, Bob and Brenda, own all three. His brother, Adam, runs the shop on U.S. 1 and his sister, Amy, is in charge of the Titusville location. In all, the shops have 15 employees. Business has been brisk, Rosenberger said. “We’ve sold 13 carts so far in the six weeks or so that we’ve been here,” he said. “And we’re starting to pick up more and more service work as people are realizing we’re here.” VV

County on road to play ball with USSSA BY MIKE GAFFEY

It’s game on for the Brevard County Commission and the United States Specialty Sports Association. Commissioners voted 4-1 on May 26 to approve a memorandum of understanding to forge an agreement with the USSSA to move the amateur sports organization’s national headquarters from Kissimmee to Space Coast Stadium in Viera. Under terms of the agreement, if approved, Brevard would spend $10 million in hotel tax revenue on upgrades to the stadium and its surrounding training complex. Brevard would build eight new artificialturf fields, convert another natural-grass field to artificial turf, add lighting for night games and 600 seats and a concession stand at an existing practice field. In return, the USSSA would sign a 20-year lease with the county, host at least 175 youth and amateur sports events a year, and guarantee at least 75,000 nights of hotel room rentals in its first year in Brevard and 100,000 annual room rentals by its third year. The USSA also would agree to take over maintenance of the complex, pay $250,000 for annual capital improvements and set aside 75 days for county-

or community-sponsored events at the stadium. USSSA representative Bill James said the organization, which has 4 million members and has called Osceola County Stadium home for the past decade, looked at several Central Florida communities, but chose Brevard because of its location and its access to airports and interstate highways. “And you’ve got the ‘wow’ factor,” James said. “You have the beaches, the space program, the port and a great inventory of hotels with reasonable rates.” USSSA chairman and chief executive officer Don DeDonatis said the 48-year-old organization had an economic impact of $37 million in Osceola County in 2013. Commissioner Trudi Infantini, who cast the lone dissenting vote, said she opposed spending taxpayer money to bring amateur sports to the stadium while the owner of Cocoa Expo, at State Road 520 just west of Interstate 95, was spending his own money to do the same. She questioned why DeDonatis wanted to leave Kissimmee. “We’re looking for growth,” DeDonatis replied. “We can’t seem to find that where we are now.” DeDonatis said he hopes to start baseball and softball in Viera by late 2016, then add

soccer and lacrosse when new fields are ready. Space Coast Stadium hosts the Washington Nationals for spring training and the Brevard County Manatees, a Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers that plays 71 Florida State League games in Viera. But the Nationals plan to move to West Palm Beach after the 2016 or 2017 spring season and will share a new stadium with the Houston Astros, which are leaving Kissimmee.

professional fast-pitch softball team, would begin play in Viera and that several of their 35 home games would be televised. Several Brevard hotel and business owners expressed support for the proposal. Hotel owner Tom Hermanson of Cocoa Beach said youth sports “is one of the best returns on investment that you can get.” “Those girls who play fast-pitch softball, they don’t travel alone,” he said. “They don’t get sent down here from Wisconsin by themselves. Mom, Dad and brother Timmy all come along. They come down here and they stay for a week and they spend a lot of money at restaurants and stores and hotels and everything else.” VV

The Manatees are considering moving from Viera as well. A proposal to build a new stadium in downtown Melbourne recently fell through, but the Manatees have approached Palm Bay about the possibility of erecting a stadium at U.S. 1 and Port Malabar Boulevard. DeDonatis said although the two sides haven’t talked, he hopes to work together with the Manatees. His sentiments were echoed by Commissioner Curt Smith, who said he’d like to see cooperation between the USSSA and the Manatees. “The Manatees don’t put many heads in beds,” Smith said, referring to hotel room rentals. “But they add to the culture of Brevard.” James noted that the Florida Pride, USSSA’s

Film, BBQ celebrate 70 years since WWII peace BY LINDA WIGGINS

Senior Life newspaper will “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive” with a video celebration and barbecue Friday, Aug. 14 marking 70 years since the end of World War II. Who can forget the image of the sailor embracing a random nurse from the crowd and marking the moment with “The Kiss”? Millennial videographer and local actor Alex Edwards is capturing first-hand remembrances from Space Coast residents in this intergenerational project. The film will preserve memories for future generations. “It’s been a real trip to hear what a huge event this was for each of them. It seems everyone either fought in or had a loved one at war, and the relief was immense,” Edwards said. Live music from the era, exhibits and the video premier will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Space Coast Conventin Center at Holiday Inn Express in Cocoa. within the same flower through shedding; and artificial pollination — hand pollination by a human. Performance varies in pollinators. Butterflies do not always efficiently pick up pollen with their bodies, legs or tongues, although they are helpful with pollinating certain plants. However, hummingbirds, with their long tubular bills, skillfully retrieve pollen from deepthroated flowers. Actually, the exceptional pollinators are bees. They intentionally collect nectar for energy and pollen for protein, and nature helps them gather this pollen with fuzzy bodies, special hind legs and abdomens, and electrostatic charge. Furthermore, some bees, especially bumblebees, buzz pollinate — move flight muscles rapidly, causing vibration in the anthers to better release pollen in self-pollinating plants like tomatoes. Because a large portion of food consumed is dependent on bees, they are worth billions to the global economy.

VIERA VOICE Brett Pigon

Bees are exceptional pollinators and help enable human beings to thrive on earth.

wild species. Consequently, growers rent or purchase bees (commercial crops are primarily pollinated by honey bees), but managed bees suffer from parasites, pathogens and pesticides. In some regions of China, where pesticides have discouraged bumblebees in apple and pear crops, artificial pollination is necessary. Most essential is the pollination of trees. Besides providing food and shelter, trees are the lungs of the earth — they release oxygen. They also furnish fuel. Sunken, compressed trees ultimately become coal which fuels electricity. How about pines (conifers) which produce turpentine through the distillation of their resin? Obviously, pollination is crucial. The sudden urge to swat annoying bees or destroy any pollinators should be repressed. These beings may determine whether there are delicious apples to savor or colorful flowers to smell. And these flowers will in turn attract needed pollinators. VV

At long last, there’s a new version of the long-beloved cookbook put out in 1980 by members of St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church, this time also including recipes from Russia, Serbia, Croatia, Spain and Romania. “Taste of Greece and Beyond…” is published as a charity fundraiser for the local chapter of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos society, established nationwide in 1933. “This has been 35 years in the making,’’ said society president and church administrator Despina Echevarria. “It’s a deep feeling for us. Those women were resourceful. They built a community center based on their cooking. This is an honor to bring some of their recipes, but we also recruited other nationalities that go to our church. They are Orthodox, but they are from different countries. We have them mixed in. We don’t have a separate section. In essence, every culture has their foods that they enjoy and share as a communal thing. We didn’t want them

to feel excluded,’’ she said. The introduction to the 300-recipe cookbook explains about the mix of its 75 contributors. “As ethnic cultures expanded across the borders of far away lands, so did culinary innovations expand into the cuisines of those distant countries. Food tells us a great deal about a country’s history.” The process actually started four years ago but the publisher was chosen about a year ago, Echevarria said. A total of 1,000 cookbooks were printed with proceeds going to five local charities. Stephanie Zavitsanos served as cookbook committee chairwoman, taking over for the late Mary Manatos. “I took over in honor of her. So many people came through with recipes,” she said. The convenient loose leaf, three-ring binder cookbooks cost $25 and can be ordered for an additional $7 for shipping. school, continuing to strive and look for ways to carry on and improve the school environment in regards to the three pillars used as the base for the recognition: • Reduce environmental impact and costs; • Improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and • Provide environmental education, effectively incorporating STEM, civic skills and green career pathways It is a huge task, but one that can be tackled with the support of the whole school community. That was a very important milestone. I was able to get that job done, making room for new ideas and projects to help the school become even greener and the whole school community even more engaged in helping the environment. I feel proud of what we have achieved. That was the highlight of the month. A week later, the feeling of success and joy gave way to impotence and sorrow. I lost my mom forever. The breeze and the sound of the waves made me agree with her: that is a calming place, a good spot to visit when you are looking for peace and to clear your mind. As I found out in the end, that is also a good place to reenergize and gather strength to just keep swimming. VV

Dr. Ellen Altenburg, fresh from a St. Baldrick’s buzz cut to battle childhood cancer, loves the relaxing wildlife-attracting design of the Spyglass Medical Center at the start of the Viera Medical Mile almost as much as do her diminutive duckie-loving patients. BY LINDA WIGGINS

The Viera Medical Mile will get its first official event this fall hosted by the author of the moniker that refers to the one-mile circuit up and down Spyglass Hill Road between Murrell Road and Baytree Drive. The monthly Viera MD Medical Mile Walk and Talk with the Doc will invite the public and patients of the upscale medicalservices area to get moving while they learn what else they can do to get more from a healthy lifestyle. January’s inaugural Viera MD Medical Mile 5K & Fun Run/ Walk will kick off a day of family fun and proceeds will help meet the health and basic needs of families who care enough to take in or adopt children. Viera Medical Mile was officially named by Viera MD in its award-winning June 2014 issue by CEO Jill Blue-Gaines of Bluewater Creative Group, which also publishes Viera Voice, Senior Life, Boomer Guide and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide, and hosts many popular expos and events each year. It started a few years ago with a gorgeous building here. A cool looking structure there. Then a pattern began to emerge. Businesses along Spyglass Hill Road from Murrell Road to Baytree Drive all followed a health and medical theme or were placed there because it was a thriving, growing medical community. At the west end of the Viera Medical Mile on the north side at Murrell Road is one of the original buildings, Spyglass Medical Building at 7000 Spyglass Ct. The relatively large building at 30,000 square feet and three stories is made of red brick and reflective glass

surrounded by a fountaincentered pond that like all of Viera remains a haven for wildlife. “I love having my practice here because I can go sit by the fountain and decompress from my busy day. My patients get very excited to see ‘the duckies.’ It’s just beautiful here,” said pediatrician Dr. Ellen Altenburg, whose offices are on the first floor overlooking

When bad things happen to good bills BY LINDA WIGGINS

“It is the scourge of most legislators,” said Patrick Gavin, community relations director for U.S. District 8 Congressman Bill Posey, who represents Brevard and Indian River counties. District 8 headquarters for Brevard are at the Government Center in Viera. “The most popular bills for this are for defense spending,” Gavin told the group of about 60 business and nonprofit agency representatives. “Legislators are reluctant to vote against the bill because they know they will be slammed by

Have you ever wondered why some legislative bills start off innocently enough and singular in purpose, but once approved have so many unrelated amendments added that they can be unrecognizable, sometimes opposite of initial intent? Members of the Viera Means Business networking breakfast group found out why first hand Thursday, June 11 at Wuesthoff Town Square Assisted Living community on Murrell Road in Viera.

the media and constituents for being ‘anti-defense,’ and it’s very difficult to get the message out that it truly is not the case.” Don’t expect the practice to change anytime soon, Gavin said. He added that it is among many legislative processes that Posey is working to reform, similar to reform efforts during his time as a Florida legislator. Gavin also updated members on upcoming legislation and trends that might enhance or otherwise affect commerce, and outlined the areas in which the congressman’s office may be of assistance to local businesses. These reasons alone were sufficient to invite Gavin as the meeting speaker, but there is an added reason, said Jill Blue-Gaines, CEO of Viera Voice publishing and expo firm Bluewater Creative Group, which also publishes Viera MD magazine, Senior Life newspaper, the annual Boomer Guide, and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide. “It’s important to know where to go when you have a need from your congressman,” Blue-Gaines said. “But it’s really, really valuable to have met someone fact-to-face. You have his business card. You belong to a group whose presence matters. That’s the power of smart networking. You’re never alone.”
