The Viera High School marching band is going to get to do its thing on the big stage…

In the Big Easy.

One hundred fifty band members and 30 adults are planning to travel to New Orleans on Dec. 30 as part of the Sugar Bowl festivities.

After taking part in a parade on Dec. 31, the Hawks will be among a group of bands performing on the field at the Superdome during halftime of the bowl game.

“This is the 11th year the school has been open and it’s the first trip of this magnitude that the band is making,” band director Nick Eggen said.

“We’re looking forward to representing the school and the county.”

Picking the Sugar Bowl made sense for Eggen on a number of fronts. Not only has the Florida State graduate been to the game several times, but his father is from New Orleans, giving him a

Teens rolled up their sleeves when they heard that their less fortunate peers didn’t have school supplies despite charitable channels to obtain them. They gave up a Saturday morning to pack them in individual bags Aug. 20 at the Suntree YMCA. They are members of the group God’s SQUAD, and though they are not officially affiliated with St. Mary’s Catholic School or the church, they all are current or former students of the prekindergarten-througheighth-grade school.

“These kids are amazing.

They really have a heart to help others,” said Jen Reneau, a mom who started the group 3½ years ago.

The acronym stands for Students’ Quest for Understanding And Discipleship.

“We are honestly just a group of teens who want to be Jesus to others through our three mission points: pray, serve and love,” Reneau said.

The students in need are fellow members at the Y who are on scholarship for their monthly fees.

Suntree area in which the Y is located, that there are not youth at risk that need scholarships,” Suntree Y operations director Joe Rowlette said.

“The truth is that many of our families in the area need help, and we don’t turn anyone away. When we hear that our families have additional needs, we are happy to organize a relief effort, and fellow members are the most generous and ready to jump in and help.”

A local Dollar Tree donated about 15 boxes of supplies and a local Walgreens donated about 75 bags to hold the supplies.

God’s SQUAD members are frequent responders to requests for help, according to Suntree Y board member Rev. Bill Kearney.

“They are the first to jump in and help. They help us pack our Christmas boxes each year to go locally and around the world with gifts for children in need. I can’t say enough great things about these wonderful young people,” Kearney said.

The teens are gearing up to be of even more assistance as St. Mary’s welcomes a new priest this month.

“I know I speak for the

teens when I say they are ready to be of even more service,” Reneau said.

An upcoming event will help raise money for swim lessons and swim team membership for childrens whose families cannot afford it.

Swim for Scholarships on Oct. 15 will give youth and adult members and anyone from the public an opportunity to collect pledges per laps they swim.

The event will take place at the larger pool at the Cocoa YMCA. “We use the big pool so we can get more kids in at a time. ‘We swim so others can, too,’ is the motto.” Rowlette said. “It’s a great way for the kids to give back or to make the experience available to others less fortunate. It’s a fun party atmosphere, pumped up with lively music.

Jennifer Cenker has been in love with the outdoors for as long as she can remember.

Out of concern that it wasn’t safe for a girl to go hiking alone, her father declined her request to take a year off before starting college so she could hike the Appalachian Trail.

Her parents were also against her desire to teach in a remote Alaskan village after college, fearing for her safety so far in the wilderness. But these roadblocks never stopped her love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit.

The Art Gallery of Viera hosts fifth annual juried art show

Sure to draw large crowds and excitement, the Art Gallery of Viera will hold its biggest juried art show of the year, “Brush with Success,”Oct. 7 through Nov. 6.

Now in its fifth year, this unique guest art show is the largest of the events held in Viera’s only art gallery, which hosts monthly shows during the year. Local gallery members as well as artists throughout the country have been invited to apply.

But, the competition to get a spot in the show is tough. Last year’s event featured 50 unique pieces with 150 artists vying for gallery spots. This year’s show proves to be even more competitive.

“This show helps us get our name out there,”

said J. Susan Cole Stone, executive director and a gallery artist. “We are the only art gallery in Viera and our reputation is growing.”

This family-friendly show will showcase a potpourri of creativity, including photography, oil, water color, acrylics, sculpture, pottery, digital art and much more. Artists can enter up to three pieces of artwork in the show.

Criteria for the artwork for this show require original work that has not previously been on display in the gallery. This year, artists from outside of Florida have also been encouraged to participate.

And, according to Cole Stone, the “Brush with Success” show is also a great way for new artists who are not affiliated with any gallery to showcase their work.

Generous cash purse awards also will entice artists. An awards ceremony will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8, where prizes for gold ($500), silver ($300), and bronze ($200) awards, as well as a merit award ($100) will be awarded.

A Melbourne community garden offers more choices for public

Forty numbered frames for community garden beds inside Wickham Park await soil and micro-irrigation with a shed for storing garden tools and supplies.

If you’ve ever wanted to eat your own fresh vegetables grown from seeds, but lacked a yard to garden in, Wickham Park in Melbourne is opening a new community garden on Sept. 8.

The garden, under the auspices of the University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) in partnership with Brevard County Parks

& Recreation, plans on 40foot by 16-foot raised garden beds with micro-irrigation.

Time-tested vegetable varieties will be supplied as part of the program.

Linda Seals, Brevard County Extension director of UF/ IFAS, said “We will give them [growers] some seeds and some plants, stuff we know does really well.”

The gardener has a choice of growing their own seeds and plants or UF/IFAS’s.

There are no stipulations on what to grow but “it has to be legal,” and no flowers unless edible, as the beds are intended as vegetable gardens.

The cost for renter/ growers is $50 for a bed, for a year, from Sept. 8 to June 1, 2017. Seals will give support to gardeners with education on growing and health benefits of eating fresh vegetables. Seals will be at the Farmers Market in Wickham Park at 3 p.m. every Thursday.

There are three ways to participate in the community garden: as a sponsor; as a volunteer; or as a renter/ grower. Sponsorship costs $160 per bed.

Seals said, “Sponsored beds are maintained by volunteers, and food harvested will go toward families in need, who are often Farmers Market patrons utilizing SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] benefits.

Seals said, “We are hoping to incorporate the two, the market and the garden.”

A mandatory meeting for all renters is at 6 p.m.

Garden access is the same as park access, from dawn

to dusk. Wickham Park is located at 2500 Parkway Drive, Melbourne, 32935.

Make a left directly inside the main entrance off Parkway, then take the first left, a dirt road, that goes past the third building on your right. Forty beds are framed out past the chicken coops.

“We are really excited to bring a community garden to the Melbourne area, as people have asked for it,” Seals said “And to educate the community and get people out in the garden.”

The Holy Trinity football team has a message for opposing defenses this season: Go ahead and focus on stopping junior running back Jashaun Corbin.

“The players are going to benefit so much from Jashaun’s presence,” Tigers coach Nate Hooks Jr. said.

“On the field, it will open up three or four other guys.

Jashaun will open it up for Joc Perry, LaAnthony Valentine, Tay Griffin and Larry Hill.

“All of those guys will have a better season because of the presence of Jashaun which now helps them off the field because they can be recruited.”

The addition of the speedy Valentine should really give the Tigers a boost, particularly if defenses overcommit to trying to stop Corbin.

game on defense is going to be pressure and speed.

We’re going to be extremely aggressive and Joc in the middle, it’s no secret, is the anchor of that defense.”

After making the playoffs last season, the Tigers believe they are not only ready to make another postseason run, but they will be much better than last year.

“Last year, we were young,” Corbin said.

“This year, we have more experience. And we know what it’s like to be in the playoffs.”

If a proposal that is under consideration by the FHSAA goes through, teams would qualify for the playoffs under a point system rather than district play as early as next season.

That means this could be the last chance for the Tigers to break their Class 3A district title drought and win their first championship since 2004.

Couple that with the potential of going deep into the playoffs — say to the regional final or beyond — and that would suit Hooks and the Tigers just fine.

“That’s what we’re looking for,” the Tigers coach said. “That would be an extremely successful season.” VV

Football players pitch in to help community

It was a chance to bond. A chance to laugh.

But mostly, it was an opportunity to help out and connect with a member of the community.

That’s what members of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy football team took from spending a couple of weekend days doing community service work with Habitat for Humanity.

Holy Trinity players painted, laid down sod and did some landscaping at the home of Angela Jordan in Cocoa last month.

“It was a way for us to give back to the community, but the amazing thing about it is our student-athletes benefited from it as much as the family that we were helping,” Tigers coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. “That was amazing. The reactions they saw from helping someone and how pleased she was … the first thing she said was, ‘HT Rocks.’

“We finished the project in two hours less than what they actually planned for us and it was because of the energy that the guys brought.”

The idea for the project was presented to Hooks

by Dr. Scott Milo (DDS), president of the school’s Blue and Gold Club, and the coach jumped at the opportunity A week after the painting was done, a dozen players showed up at Jordan’s house to help put down the sod grass in both the front and back lawns.

“I don’t mind it at all,” Griffin said “It adds to our community, like she said she’s going to start coming to our games now.”

Perry and Griffin both said the part they enjoyed the most was seeing Jordan’s reaction.

Of course, the day also gave the players a chance to spend some time together off the field, which could prove invaluable down the road. That was especially true for the Tigers new starting quarterback Jordan Wojciechowski, who transferred to Holy Trinity from Astronaut during the summer.

“There was a lot of joking round and talking,” Perry said. “Jordan is new. He found out more about us.”

And Wojciechowski’s teammates, of course, found out more about him.

All in all, it was a community service project that couldn’t have worked out any better for all involved. That’s why it wouldn’t be a surprise to see

There is a reason for that, of course. Viera lost an experienced quarterback, a highly recruited wide receiver and its entire playmaking secondary from last year’s team.

But this year’s Hawks are hardly lacking in talent.

And with the addition of transfers like linebacker Connor Kaminski, defensive end Jaylin Wilson and quarterback Tim DeMorat, the Hawks should be tough to deal with again, provided the newcomers can adapt quickly and defensive coordinator Derek Smith’s unit can live up to its lofty expectations.

“I think (opposing teams) will probably think that we won’t repeat what we did last year,” Hawks coach Kevin Mays said. “But I think with the addition of a couple of these new skill guys, if they can buy into what we’re doing and learn the offense, we absolutely could repeat what we did last year.

“We have the keys to do it.

Unlike last season, when opposing defenses came in knowing they had to stop Viera receiver Tré Nixon, this year’s team does not have that go-to guy, which can bring some different challenges.

“They’re going to have to cover all of us,” Jackson said.

For the second year in a row, the Hawks will face a brutal schedule that includes home games against Cocoa, Lakeland Kathleen and Gonzaga (Washington D.C.) and road games at Palm Bay and Merritt Island that should have Viera ready for district matchups with Martin County, South Fork and Melbourne.

The Hawks will need to grow up quickly, but if they do, it should be another fun season.VV

Holy Trinity volleyball has solid core, talented newcomers

Anytime half of your roster is made up of new players, there is going to be an adjustment period.

But for the Holy Trinity volleyball team, that dynamic is coming along just fine.

“We’ve just become really bonded as a team,” senior co-captain Kendall Vaught said. “I think it’s helped us on the court since we’re more used to each other. It helps us know where the ball is.”

Led by Vaught, an outside hitter, and senior co-captain middle blocker Sadie Girard, the Tigers have a solid core of returners that also includes junior outside hitter Emily Tobkes, junior middle blocker/opposite hitter Emily Vaught and sophomore

middle blocker/opposite hitter Lara Boos.

The new players include junior defensive specialist Bailey Vickers, junior middle blocker/opposite hitter Kaytee Castillo, freshman setter Kayla Burge, junior defensive specialist Courtney Noe and her sister, freshman setter Emily Noe. Expect the Noe sisters to have a big, immediate effect on the Tigers.

“They both play on extremely successful club volleyball teams,” Holy Trinity coach Pete Klonowski said. “Emily’s team won the AAU and USA Volleyball national championships at 14-and-under.”

While the Tigers are a little low in numbers and will once again be vertically challenged,

there is still obviously a lot to get excited about this season.

In order to be successful, the team will have to play strong defense and execute its fast-paced offense.

“We are not big, but we try to be very fast offensively,” Klonowski said. “That’s the way we have to be in order to be successful. We think we have the personnel to do that.

“Our ball control, our passing, right now looks pretty darn good, efficient, and our two setters are doing a great job running the offense.”

Vaught believes a big reason why the team has been able to gel together so quickly is the time the group spent together this summer.

“When we had our summer volleyball camp, we

more on my shoulders, and that makes me really excited.

“I’m not scared about it, which I thought (I would be).

I want to do the best for the coaches and for my girls on the team.”

Alvarez will be one of four seniors on this year’s team, joining middle blocker Kaitlyn Jensen, defensive specialist Christina Sedaros and right side/middle blocker Carly Kisch.

“It’s a young team compared to last year,” said Viera assistant coach Eric Murray, who is leading the team until head coach Sarah Wayne returns from

maternity leave later this month.

“There’s a lot of good talent. We’re looking forward to what’s coming for us this season. The sky’s the limit with the talent we have.”

Among the younger players expected to have a big impact this season are freshman outside hitter Delaney Lott and sophomores Tory Kolasky (MB) and Shaine Horvath (RS/OH). Junior transfer Maddie Day (OH/ RS) will also play a key role for Viera this season.

played against some really good teams and we came together as a team, and played as a team, which is really incredible since it was the first time playing with each other and we already connected so well,” she said.

If that can carry over to the regular season, the Tigers should once again be a team to keep an eye on in a Class 5A, District 7 grouping that also includes Astronaut,

Cocoa Beach, Cocoa, Edgewood, MCC and West Shore.

No matter what happens, the Tigers should be a fun team to watch.

According to Klonowski, it’s already a fun group to coach “I’m looking forward to this year,” he said. “They’ve really come together. They’re having a good time in practice. Pretty much every day, we’re getting better.” VV

Viera volleyball will rely on senior leadership, young talent

As a four-year starter on the Viera High girls volleyball team, Nina Alvarez has always felt like she was an important part of the team.

But now, entering her senior season as a co-captain, the Hawks’ setter sees her role changing in other areas.

“I just feel like my position and my responsibility on the team has grown so much more,” Alvarez said.

“Our former captain, Cailea (Gibbs), graduated last year and she was a really big point scorer that everyone relied on. I just feel like there’s a lot

The Hawks are trying to emphasize a “gym culture” this season.

“That’s just hustling all the time, showing up on time and giving your best every single time,” Alvarez said.

“We’ve talked about how everyone has an outside life going on and everyone has hardships and other things their mind takes them to, but the two hours we have

Given the number of new players on the roster, the Hawks could be one of those teams that only gets better as the season goes along.

“Some of those young kids have a lot of talent,” Murray said. “We just have to get the experience that we need, get acclimated to the system and what Sarah and I are looking for. Time will tell as we move on to see how things will turn out to be, but we’re very optimistic that we’re going to be very competitive.” VV

Throughout Shiffren’s 42-year-career as an educator and principal in Brevard County Public Schools, he was actively involved in sports. He received numerous awards for teaching and leadership, but the ring is for his high level of involvement in athletics from coaching to serving on numerous state committees. That includes being a member of the FHSAA Rep Assembly. He was also the Cape Coast Commissioner for more than two decades, which involved overseeing all athletics in Brevard County. Shiffren is an active golfer with VEMA and has served on the VEMA Board.

There are rumors that he has been seen wearing a red Santa Claus suit.

This week’s match was a two-man, best-ball event using full handicaps. In first place by a large margin was the team of Shiffrin and Phil Rooney. Jack Webb and James Alt were second. There was a three-way tie for third between Jim Smith and Glen Tarsha, Jim Benton and Jim Donnelly, and Dale Zeigler and Paul Winter. Jack Webb on No. 4, Raj Patel on No. 7,

Duran Golf Club has plenty to offer young golfers this fall

For a young golfer new to the sport, or simply trying to grow their game this fall, Duran Golf Club has got just the ticket.

The Space Coast Junior Golf Day & Skills Challenge will take place Sept. 24 at Duran’s Development Center and is free to all junior golfers.

A month later, the PGA Junior League will kick off its fall season with a parent informational meeting Oct. 12 with the first practice session a week later and play running from Oct. 19 to Dec. 10.

Duran introduced the junior league last year and it was hugely successful, drawing 48 players the first year. The club is expecting it to be more popular in 2016.

The cost of the junior league is $175 per player. It includes a PGA Junior League

Morrison said the league is perfect for beginning players because not only do they get quality instruction, but the team scramble format means they don’t have to play their own ball all around the course.

They will also get a chance to learn from their peers.

“It can handle elite players, and it can handle people that have never touched a golf club because of the team atmosphere of it,” Morrison said. “We don’t stack our teams where we have two great players playing together.

“We get the good player playing with the new player so the (new player) can learn from the good player and they can help each other out.”

The skills challenge will begin with a free golf clinic led by Blazer at 10 a.m. and followed by a free lunch at noon. The skills competition, which consists of driving, pitching and putting, will follow with players broken up into age groups.

“If they’re just starting out, it’s a good way to come get instruction, see where your skills match up, get fitted for some equipment and then join the junior league,” Morrison said.

The FL Space Coast Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby is offering a Climate Advocate Training workshop on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Suntree/Viera Public Library.

The session is free and will teach citizens how to build political will and promote change in positive, constructive ways. Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) has a unique approach of achieving change through building positive, respectful relationships with lawmakers and focusing on specific market-based, consumerfriendly solutions that have received support from conservatives and liberals alike.

The workshop will include mini-lobbying training.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is non-partisan and has an active and growing Conservative Caucus.

It is interested in new conservative members who are concerned about protecting amilies and communities from the costs and risks of extreme weather.

“It’s going to be pretty cool,” senior band captain Jacob Groppel said of getting the chance to play in the Superdome.

Band members have known about the trip for several months, though the initial announcement was quite a shocker.

“They were telling us there was a surprise coming, but I just thought it was going to be new equipment or something,” senior drum major Caitlin Meckley said. “Then they were like, ‘Oh, we’re going to the Sugar Bowl.’”

While both Meckley and Groppel said they were most looking forward to performing, the band will also visit the Audubon Zoo and the Aquarium of the Americas along with the historic French Quarter.

The trip will cost $875 per student, but that does not include extra spending money.

“I have no interest in being able to use my cell phone and we are very much looking forward to becoming unplugged from the internet and phone.”

Cenker said hikers must prepare emotionally and mentally for any contingency.

“It’s going to be the hardest thing we have ever done. There will be horrible days when we’ll feel sore, hungry, filthy and worn out. On the other hand, we’re going to see amazing beauty that many will never get to see. We’ll be hiking with a wonderful array of other human beings. We’ll spend some amazing quality time together and learn so much about ourselves. You have to be prepared knowing that while it’s a grand adventure, it’s going to be incredibly hard.”

Because they expect to be on the trail up to seven months, they will rely on Dave Cenker, Jennifer’s husband and Gabe’s father, to mail boxes of supplies and food to the towns they will enter every few days.

In addition to planning and preparing in advance for the hike itself, the duo intend to take time toward the end of their hike to prepare to re-enter their life at home.

“Coming back to reality is hard.

It is too loud, too fast, 1/8 page too many people, too much 4 x 4.5 technology.

Once people get off $360 the trail, they have to remember that their bodies are not burning massive amounts of calories and so they have to be aware of not eating everything in sight. I think it will just be a lot of mental preparation trying to coax ourselves back into the real world.”

In addition to preparing for the hike itself and learning to cook on the trail, Gabe Cenker volunteers at Rotary Park, is involved in Boy Scouts, is on Merritt Island’s FRC Horsepower 801 Robotics team and is currently studying Japanese.

Lack of bus service affects students’ flexibility to attend choice schools

When Jeanne Goodfellow of Viera received an email less than two weeks before school started that her daughter would not have busing to her school of choice, she was frantic.

“I am a working single mom and there is no way I can get my daughter there. It was great that she got in to that great school, but now that may be for nothing if I cannot get her there and back,” Goodfellow said. Daughter Caroline Zeek attends eighth grade at Edgewood Junior/Senior High School on Merritt Island, while daughter Catherine Zeek is in fifth grade at Manatee Elementary.

The Brevard County School Board began looking into possible solutions at the Aug. 9 board meeting.

The first step is to have choice schools organize carpools in the interim.

Parents received the email from their schools, forwarded

by Mark W. Mullins, Ed.D., deputy superintendent and COO of the school district.

A & S Transportation was planning to provide the transportation but issued a letter to the parent group coordinating the service that it could not do so.

Parents previously paid $1,250 per year per student to School Wheels Direct, which closed in May at the end of the last school year. Last year, Goodfellow dropped her daughter off at the Publix at Stadium Parkway's parking lot and headed on to work while the bus made the long trip to the choice school.

The head of the parents group, Laene Keith, jumped into action when she learned of the drop-in service by the new provider. She reached out to a beloved former driver with the previous company, Doug Anderson. She hopes he will provide the service if there is enough interest from parents whose children need corridor busing to Edgewood and Stevens Stevenson Elementary School of the Arts, also on Merritt Island.

Anderson has formed his own company, Safety First Student Transportation, LLC, and said he will look into expanding services based on parent interest.

“Choice Schools and programs are certainly facing a transportation hardship and we need all the help we can get raising awareness,” Keith said.

schools have reported a drop in enrollment from families unable to fill the gap, Goodfellow said.

“For now, we will work together carpooling with other parents to make it happen,” Goodfellow said.

She and fellow mom Aimee Koshlap, whose daughter Reilly also attends eighth grade at Edgewood, will help each other and also work to seek a permanent, more beneficial solution that will benefit all students in Brevard through the school district.

Michelle Irwin, communications director for Brevard Schools, said while the district has been directed by the board to research possible solutions, there is no indication the board will direct the district to pay for it.

“We said during the budget cut in 2013, which eliminated busing for choice schools, that parents would be responsible for arranging corridor busing and paying for it. That has not changed,” Irwin said. She clarified that recent funding increases would not be used for that purpose.

“The half-cent sales tax has specific items that it funds and cannot be used for this purpose.

We recently received more money from county

money to spend on other items,” Irwin said.

The School Board will host special meetings to look into a permanent solution, Irwin said, but any efforts will be to assist parents who want their children to go to choice schools, and is not intended for the district to take over payment for the busing service or provide the service directly.

“It would take $1.2 million to add buses, and more on top of that to hire additional drivers and pay operations costs,” Irwin said. “We just don’t have that. If we were to pay for it, the money would have to be taken away from some other service.”

Goodfellow and other parents are hoping to arrange at least some sort of subsidy to offset the cost.

Manatee Elementary opened its doors Aug. 18 for its annual Ice Cream Social and Open House.

Besides the yummy celebration happening inside the school, smoothies from Planet Smoothie made outdoor a delicious and attractive stop as well.

At 5:45p.m., principal Carl Brown introduced families to the new outdoor space, where they are invited to have lunch with their children and teachers are encouraged to take their students for hands-on activities and a bit of fresh air.

Created in 2015 by volunteers, staff members, teachers and students, the space was transformed from a pre-K playground to an outdoor classroom that has seven planter boxes — one per grade -- that classes utilize for their experiments and ongoing learning, and six picnic tables made of recycled material that can be used for both learning and enjoying a meal.

Saving the Lagoon in a despicable system On Aug. 9 Brevard residents packed the Brevard County Commission Chamber. With a 5-0 vote, the Board of Commissioners passed a motion to put a referendum on the November ballot for a halfcent sales tax to fund projects for the restoration of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL).

This was a victory not only for the supporters present at the meeting, but for the community that had its voice heard.

That, unfortunately, is not always what happens.

Just this month, “state environmental regulators voted […] to approve new standards that will increase the amount of cancer-causing toxins allowed in Florida’s rivers and streams under a plan the state says will protect more Floridians than current standards,” the Associated Press reported.

That vote was taken while the seat for a commissioner representing the environmental community was vacant on the commission.

Whose interests are being protected in this case?

Despite the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) affirming that the new rules were created to “ensure Floridians can continue to safely eat Florida’s seafood, swim in and drink potable water from state surface waters,” according to the Associated Press “one of the commissioners who voted against the new standards questioned if the changes were being done to assist companies that want to pursue a type of oil and gas drilling known as fracking.”

That would be simply appalling.

Then on Aug. 12, the Gainesville Sun reported that “the hotly-debated Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline has received its final federal permits and company officials are seeking a green light to start construction along a 516-mile corridor that includes environmentally sensitive parts of north central Florida. […] The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finalized permits that allow the companies partnering on the pipeline — Houstonbased Spectra Energy, Duke Energy and FP&L parent company NextEra Energy — to discharge dredged and fill material into water bodies, such as wetlands, during construction.”

Could it be a mere coincidence?

After reading the article “Gov. Scott had stake in pipeline firm whose $3 billion venture he and his appointees backed” (miamiherald.com/ news/state/article1976380. html) in the Miami Herald from July 21, 2014 where it is reported that “the governor owned a stake in Spectra Energy, the Houston company chosen by Florida Power & Light that July to build and operate the $3 billion pipeline.

NextEra Energy,” it becomes a little hard to believe in coincidence.

That is the kind of coincidence that we have been experiencing more and more these days. So much so that an organization called Represent.Us was created.

Launched in late 2012, Represent.Us is “the nation’s largest grassroots anticorruption campaign” that vows to “bring conservatives and progressives together to fix America’s corrupt political system.”

It seems to me that citizens are prepared to put their money where their mouths are, but politicians, on the other hand, seem to only be prepared to put their mouths where the money is disregarding the impact — sometimes potentially catastrophic — their decisions may have. This became almost the norm in this despicable system we are living in.

Passing the referendum to help the IRL may be a hard sell not because people don’t want to fix the lagoon and contribute to the best for our community, but because they’ve been burned and lack trust. They are tired of being stuck with the bill while politicians keep making bad decisions that compromise our environment and our well being to solely favor their own interests. SUNTREENews New entry signs shine light on Suntree

Suntree residents are getting a bright new welcome to their communities courtesy of new signage just getting its final touches.

Gone are the dark green signs that say Suntree, except for one. The 11th sign at the Interlachen Road entrance south of Wickham Road will be replaced in 2017 when Brevard County adds an additional left-turn lane onto Wickham Road.

The new signs are shades of light tan with a more subtle sun and tree coloring, fashioned out of warm tone bricks, with lighting added to the left and right of the Suntree lettering, and with matching brick planters in front of each sign. Landscaping will be completed once kinks in delivery of reclaimed water are worked out.

“The Board of Directors wanted to renovate the old signs that needed both repair and a modern motif,” Suntree Master Homeowners Association general manager Todd Foley said. “They reviewed multiple designs and chose the one that maintained the traditional Suntree feel with a modern material and color scheme.”

Another new feature is updated fencing around Jack Mahon Fields at the park on Spyglass Hill Road that also is home to the SMHA office. Gone is the traditional “H” pattern of fencing and posts, in favor of “X” shapes between the posts.

“The fence design was used to discourage people from sitting on the old flat top rail and breaking it,” Foley added.

In addition to sports, the fields are used for community festivals and movie nights.

A third major update is in cyberspace. A brand new website showcases the community's amenities, many for the first time.

A trail map shows which paths may be used by homeowners around and through the private Suntree Country Club golf courses, and those which are for private country club member use solely for golf carts.

Most of the site is accessible by the public, such as information on upcoming community events, details about the community and links to homeowners subassociations. Other features are limited to homeowner use and require a login and password, such as photo galleries.

Harmony Music School moves to Suntree area

Harmony Music School, which offers parents a moneyback guarantee if their child hasn’t progressed sufficiently, has relocated from downtown Melbourne to the Suntree area.

“A lot of our students followed us from over there, and we’ve had huge growth in this new location,” Harmony’s executive director Veronica Lipp said of the July move to the site of the old Car Cabana at 6490 U.S. 1. “It’s just been easier for all of our clientele because it’s more of a centralized location, because Brevard is so spread apart.”

Formerly called A+Music, Harmony offers instruction in voice and singing, guitar, piano, drums, strings brass and woodwind instruments.

IPCC features a tracking system that lets students know where they’re at in the curriculum at all times.

Students can also view a series of instructional videos they can watch at home as often as they like.

“They’re making music the very first day,” said Mark Nelson, a former teacher for 38 years before joining Harmony as director of music education.

If a student committed to the program isn’t making

decent progress, Harmony will refund the student’s tuition.

Once a student reaches a certain proficiency level, Harmony places the student in a band alongside other students with similar skill levels.

“We don’t do the recitals where somebody’s looking at their watch and thinking, ‘Oh, 30 more kids and then my child performs,’ ” Nelson said.

“We actually put on concerts that are themed.”

Students learn a wide range of musical styles, Nelson said.

“Coming to one of our concerts, you might hear a Chopin sonata, or you might hear a Motley Crue tune,” he said.

Harmony, owned by Brian Hart, has its own youth orchestra for students ages 6 to 20. The nonprofit Creative Young Artists consists of a youth orchestra, chorus and theater group, and offers students unique opportunities to perform.

“It’s Brian’s vision that any child can be part of a professional orchestra at a minimal cost,” Lipp said. “Eventually it will be tuition-free.”

And lastly, she now has her own publishing label, JME Books, and client D. Ryan Gish just wrote a book under that label, a thriller called “Enthralled.”

Her how-to book, “Writing Your Novel, Using the Bible as Your Guide” is the text for the class she teaches at Eastern Florida State College. The eight-month course is open to anyone for free through April 2017 with morning and evening slots, meeting on the Melbourne campus at 3865 N. Wickham Road.

Twin towers will rise in Suntree as Brevard Medical City adds independent living facility “At seven stories up, you'll actually see the river.”

Every city needs a tall building. Brevard Medical City will soon have two.

Design work is underway at the 24.5-acre medical complex on Wickham Road on two seven-story apartment buildings for seniors able to live independently, Eric Hardoon, president of ME Site Development, said Aug. 11 at the monthly Viera Voice Viera Means Business meeting.

Speaking at the newly opened California Tortilla restaurant in Pineda Landings, a shopping plaza his company helped develop, Hardoon said the towers are scheduled to be built in the next 18 months at the all-inclusive medical complex and will include a bridge and a restaurant that will be open to the public.

“At seven stories up, you’ll actually see the river,” Hardoon said. “It’s very high-end with a lot of curb appeal, and it’s definitely going to make a difference in that area.”

Groundbreaking also is set in the next 30 to 45 days on Chateau Madeleine, a 120-bed assisted-living facility at Brevard Medical City, Hardoon said. And all 22 office condos on the property are sold out and should be opening in the next few weeks, he added.

It’s the latest round of construction at the stillexpanding medical city, which already is home to Suntree Internal Medicine and Viera Diagnostic Center.

Hardoon’s father, Dr. Abe Hardoon, initially bought the property with a plan of eventually moving Suntree Internal Medicine from its old office on Jordan Blass Drive to a larger location

Saltwater Cottage celebrates 1-year anniversary at The Avenue Viera

As Saltwater Cottage coowner Julie Condon celebrated the one-year anniversary of her business Aug. 12 at The Avenue Viera, she couldn't help but look back at the journey that led to her unique home furnishings and gift store.

In Feb. 2009, on the day of her late husband Frank’s birthday, Condon was taking her morning walk along a beach in the Panhandle town of Destin when she asked God for direction.

“I want to do whatever it is that you desire me to do,” Condon recalled saying that morning. “I ended my prayer with, ‘I will share my trash if it will help somebody empty theirs.’ ”

Condon knew that statement was hugely important, because she had been a victim of rape at age 12 but had never spoken about it before.

She knew the importance of sharing trauma in order to move past it, and how it opens the door for others to do the same.

As Condon started back down that beach, a wave washed a grapefruit-sized sand dollar at her feet.

“When I got that, I felt that God heard me and He said, ‘Let’s go,’ ” she said of the keepsake that now anchors the store logo.

That morning walk inspired Condon to pursue an outreach to help people broken by abuse. She and partner Thomas Cowles leased and restored a small, dilapidated

cottage in Navarre, to serve as a center for people who needed help, and started looking for items to sell at the cottage to help pay bills.

As the cottage attracted more customers, Condon decided to turn her outreach efforts into a full-time business. Her son came up with the store’s name, she said.

“He said, ‘Mom, we all know you’re crazy about salt and you say salt adds flavor to everything and you’re right there by the water. How about Saltwater Cottage?’ And I said salt water heals,” Condon said.

“So it was so appropriate.”

Condon stocked the store with home décor, nautical items, jewelry, faith-based items, driftwood art, gourmet food and books for sale.

“It’s just a little bit of everything,” she said.

In April 2015, Condon got a visit from Scott McCarthy, general manager of The Avenue Viera, who suggested that she open a second store at the outdoor shopping complex. Worried about the expense, Condon xxx

“We just took the last of our resources and they just kind of multiplied,” Condon said of her decision to open the Viera location. “It just happened and it seemed like there was just always just enough to get this or that. I can’t even explain how we managed to do it.”

On Aug. 12, the Viera store at 2270 Town Center Ave., Suite 115, marked its first year in operation as more than 200 fans enjoyed free food, discounts on items and a chat with the artist of many of the store's original works, artisan Rick Hill with SilverwareCreations. On hand was Izzy, Condon’s shih tzu and a regular at the store.“ “When we moved here, we did not know anyone, only the property manager,” Condon

said. “And I have met some of the nicest people that I have ever met in my life.”

Her new friends include a couple from Titusville who liked the store so much that they’re opening a third Saltwater Cottage in St. Simons Island, Ga. “It’s really a neat story because God is using these stores,” Condon said.

The new face of Viera has small-town roots

When Nina Salvaggio first set eyes on Viera it was an instant déjà vu.

Raised in the small town of Beaver, W.Va., she noticed some shared characteristics with the close-knit community of her youth, as well as some differences.

Salvaggio is the new community communications specialist for The Viera Company, a brand new position added as the town continues to grow.

“When we were kids we rode our bikes all over the little town, maybe stop in a store to get a soda together.

Everybody knew each other's names. And when the street lights came on, we knew it was time to head home or one of the shop owners would be calling our parents to let us know we were on our way. Everybody watched out for each other's safety. That's the sense that I get in Viera. It's got a small-

town feel,” Salvaggio said.

“However, we didn't have the amenities that Viera has, and all the great shopping, and the excellent schools.

You really get the best of everything here.”

Salvaggio earned a bachelor of arts degree in Public Relations with a specialization in Crisis Communication from the University of West Florida. She then worked for the City of Jacksonville where she served as the communications outreach coordinator for the Jacksonville Small & Emerging Business Program.

As she moved to Jacksonville, her parents moved to Baytree in Viera, and she now lives with them. Her goal is to ultimately find a place of her own in Viera. She enjoys an active lifestyle, with running, biking and swimming among her favorite pursuits, as well as nature walks with her large black Labrador

retriever Humphrey.

You'll likely see Salvaggio at community events like groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings and homeowners association meetings as well as signature events of The Viera Company held through the year.

The choice of Salvaggio for the position was as much for personability as for professionalism, said Eva Rey, director of Community Management for The Viera Company.

Dr. Frederick Ho has added a fellow Ophthalmologist to his staff at Atlantic Eye MD who has the highest level related academic qualifications for innovations in the field — a Ph.D. in Neuroscience.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Juan Carlos de Rivero Viccari, originally from Lima, Peru, started work here Aug. 1.

He earned his doctorate from the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy from the Lousiana State University Health Services Center.

The Atlantic Eye MD at 8040 N. Wickham Rd. in Suntree has a medical practice and adjacent surgical center that treats patients with a variety of eye diseases, but mostly cataracts and glaucoma: diseases associated with the aging baby boomer population.

• A cataract is simply a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. This is a normal part of the aging process, but may also result from an injury or as a complication from another medical condition. Most people with cataracts have them in both eyes although they may develop at different rates. Corrective surgery is performed on on an outpatient basis.

• Glaucoma is a sight-threatening disease affecting the optic nerve — the direct connection between each eye and the brain. When glaucoma damages optic nerves, areas of blind spots develop in the peripheral vision. As the nerves deteriorate, so does vision.

If untreated, blindness eventually occurs. Even with treatment, optic nerve damage cannot be reversed, only stopped.

“This is the first time I’ve had another ophthalmologist join my practice. Besides practicing general

ophthalmology, he also has expertise in macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, both areas that we’ve seen a tremendous demand for in this county.

He’s also a skilled cataract surgeon,’’ Dr. Ho said.

“There’s a growing demand enough to have another ophthalmologist here with the growing medical age group of the aging baby boomers,’’ he said.

In addition to all the medical qualifications needed to become an Ophthalmologist and his Ph.D., de Rivero Vaccari later completed a post doctoral fellowship where he studied neuroprotective and neurodegenerative pathways in the retina.

“The retina is an extension of the brain. Pretty much my entire life I’ve been dedicated to the eye. It’s amazing that after all these years I am still fascinated by it. Things are always changing in this field so that makes it so exciting. There are always new discoveries. That is one of the reasons that I also did my Ph.D., to have that scientific exposure to the new developments,’’ he said.

Shifting back to clinical training, de Rivero Viccari then obtained his medical degree from the Louisiana State School of Medicine. He completed his internship in internal medicine and residency in Ophthalmology at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine/Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans.

Earlier he also had received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Florida International University in Miami.

Outback Steakhouse is moving from Suntree to Viera.

The Australian-themed chain serving steaks, seafood and other steakhouse fare reportedly will relocate from its current location at 6450 N. Wickham Road in the Promenade Shoppes of Suntree to a new restaurant in a building under construction just south of Tire Kingdom, which is at 7201 Lake Andrew Drive.

The move is scheduled to occur in December, a Suntree Outback employee

confirmed.

Contacted about the proposed move, an Outback spokesperson was noncommittal.

“We assess our restaurant locations on an ongoing basis to determine which ones may be candidates for relocation,” Elizabeth Watts, director of media and community relations for Tampa-based Bloomin’ Brands Inc., said in an email.

“I can tell you that we are interested in the area.”

The Suntree location has been in business for 10 years and currently has 59 employees.

Outback also has restaurants on Merritt Island at Merritt Square Mall and in Melbourne at Melbourne Square mall.

The new Outback will be the second steakhouse in the bustling commercial and residential corridor near The Avenue Viera and Viera Shops.

LongHorn Steakhouse is at 6691 Lake Andrew Drive. Another steakhouse, Austin’s Chop House at 6630 Colonnade Ave., closed in March.

Rabbits are small hopping mammals and North America harbors more than half their population. Families include bucks, does and kits (bunnies); habitats vary from deserts, to wetlands to suburbs.

Though they are related, hares are usually bigger overall. Baby hares (leverets) are precocial — born with fur, eyes opened, and capable of movement; however, kits are born altricial — with little or no hair, eyes closed and helpless.

Ubiquitous defines the eastern cottontail which reaches reproductive maturity at two to three months. It breeds nearly year round in Florida, but mainly from February through September. A nest is dug into a cup-size depression lined with fur and grass, even in an open yard. Gestation endures 26 to 30 days, producing three or four litters yearly with four to seven kits. Kit mortality is at least one in three (nest flooding a factor).

After birthing, breeding immediately resumes. In the wild, lifespan is three years.

This rabbit frequents edges offering cover and does not burrow. It is most active at dawn and dusk — crepuscular. It consumes green vegetation — herbivorous. In the winter, nourishment consists of buds, twigs and bark. Chisellike incisors neatly clip plants. Incidentally, deer damage is ragged.

Nature accommodates survival. Brown or gray fur provides camouflage.

Advantageous are long ears and fine vision. Thumping forewarns danger. Tails are helpful. For example, when the eastern cottontail is pursued, its short and fluffy

white tail becomes the focal point of the predator, such as a hawk or dog. During the chase, the rabbit zigzags and the perplexed aggressor has to refocus on its prey. This rabbit can flee at 18 mph.

If apprehended, it kicks its powerful, large hind legs, applies its sharp claws and bites.

In Florida, another species is the marsh rabbit, an able swimmer. The Lower Keys marsh rabbit, a subspecies, is labeled the “playboy bunny” because the Playboy Foundation partly funded its research. The black-tailed jackrabbit, an introduced desert species, is actually a hare. It displays characteristic long blacktipped ears. Selected in the 1930 and 1940 decades to train greyhounds in the Miami area, it still thrives particularly around Miami International Airport.

The invasive, burrowing European rabbits are widely domesticated for pets, meat and fur in a variety of colors and patterns. They were extensively kept in ancient Rome. The rex (named after the rex gene), from France, has velvet-like fur.

The Angora, from Turkey, is raised for yarn. The Florida white (with albino red eyes) is popular for show. The Belgian hare is a rabbit bred to resemble a hare. Hares are not domesticated.

Did you know? A fecund female rabbit might generate 800 descendants yearly.

When happy, rabbits jump in the air (a “binky.”) Their teeth wear down but never stop growing. Their meat is leaner than chicken. Their nitrogen-high urine enriches lemon trees. Supposedly, around 600 B.C. in Europe, rabbit feet became lucky charms! VV Jumping Bunnies!!!

VA clinic helps vets with drug, alcohol abuse

Some veterans who return from combat or other duty have problems with use of alcohol or drugs, both street drugs and prescription medications used incorrectly.

Such substance use can harm health, cause mood and behavior problems, hurt social relationships, and in the worst cases, result in financial ruin.

For veterans with these issues, there are treatments and counseling at the Viera Veterans Administration (VA) Clinic that address all types of problems related to substance use, from unhealthy use of alcohol to life-threatening addictions.

“We know that many adjustment issues occur when veterans return from combat or separate from the military, and helping to intervene and develop healthy coping skills are important so that veterans do not turn to

unhealthy ones, such as drugs or alcohol, ” said Victoria Harwood, licensed clinical social worker, certified addiction professional (CAP) and social worker for the Substance Abuse Program at the Viera VA Clinic.

In her role as therapist, she runs groups, participates in the Intensive Outpatient Program for Substance Abuse and provides individual therapy for veterans with substance abuse issues.

“We have a full gamut of services available: group and individual therapy, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and aftercare. We use community resources for detox and inpatient services and then coordinate care for the needs of the veterans. In addition, we have a full range of pain management services available on the medical side as well as mental health services.” VV For more information or resources, go to va.gov.

Retirement a ‘re-firing into a different passion’

If there was such a thing as a local celebrity, Pam Gillespie would be it. The Suntree-area resident worked out of the Viera Government Center for 21 years, assisting a succession of two popular U.S. congressmen in creating as broad a reach as possible that might result in economic growth and job creation, crime suppression, improved schools, protection from terrorism and anything and everything in between.

Her attendance at a group's meeting might mean the ear of the congressman, might mean the move of a particular mission to the spotlight, might mean the connection to another important connection, might mean — in a word — money.

party after 31 years of local community service and years of volunteering before that — to “spend more time with her family while she's young enough to enjoy it” — revealed that her appeal transcended what she could do for others through money, influence and power.

“She is so loved, not only by every one of you, but by everyone who comes in touch with her. She is absolutely contagious,” said Rob Medina, fellow community relations director for District 8 U.S. Congressman Posey, as he opened the ceremony with prayer at Gillespie's request.

“She's not retiring, she is re-firing into a different passion. Her heart is bent toward God and serving others, and you can't just turn that off.”

The huge numbers in attendance included

both Posey and former congressman Dr. Dave Weldon, still her family doctor.

“For every problem that you solve,” Congressman Posey said, “one out of 100 people will say thank you.

One out of 200 will take the time to drop you a note of appreciation. The stack that Pam started is five huge, thick volumes now. It's incredible the number of lives that she's touched.”

All her leading men turned out and spoke, most importantly her husband Dave, known for 14 years as “no, the other Dave” when she worked for Weldon.

“I hired quite a few people over the years and standing next to me was one of the best hires I've ever made,” Weldon said. “I was new to the Congress and I had to open an office and hire all the staff. I noticed after a

few months she was telling everyone else what to do, even a fellow with a law degree. I would give her a task and three or four days to accomplish it and invariably she would come back to me in three hours with it done.”

The Gillespies moved to Brevard in 1978 when the first two of their four children were small. They agreed one parent would always stay home with the children and Pam did so — volunteering along the way at the children's schools and in the community — until Dave decided to work from home and open a group home for mentally and physically challenged adults.

Pam had been working part time as a pastor for the Special Gathering, a ministry for mentally challenged adults, under founder Rev. Richard Stimson and alongside her best friend,

author Linda Howard.

Gillespie plans to write two books with Howard's assistance — one on husband Dave's dying and brief trips to heaven and one on her grandson Joey's recovery-in-progress from being run over by a car and his meeting Jesus — and tour near and far in the couple's new 35-foot recreational vehicle giving testimony of God's hand of miracle in their lives. For now, it's reflection on gratitude.

“I was shocked to find people were hurting because I wanted to retire,” Gillespie said. “I didn't know I was that well liked. It's hard to feel it, to allow myself to feel that. That I'm that valued, by the congressman, his staff, and the community, that if I were to go away, they would hurt. I guess I have made a difference.” VV

When I am old

When I am old.

When I begin to curl at the edges like something left too long in the sun.

When I am holding to life like a lamp holding to the last drop of oil.

When I will pass most of my time alone, I will have these moments from my days and nights of caregiving to keep me company.

I will have Rebecca, helpless in the unrelenting grip of Parkinson’s, asking me to hold a spoon in her hand so she can eat her strawberry Jell-o. We both know that most of it will end up on her lap, on the table, on the floor, but still she will smile and say, “That’s the best strawberry Jell-o I’ve ever tasted.”

I will have Alice, who says, “Ask me how I’m feeling today” and, without waiting for my answer, she’ll say, “I’m feeling as fine as a frog’s hair split 84 ways and you know frogs don’t have a lot of hair.” Then she will smile that smile that lights up my heart, even though I know the light in her own heart grows dimmer every day.

Wistory — the same funny story every time — and he will laugh every time until tears run down his weathered face. Perhaps there is something about Alzheimer’s that isn’t all bad.

I will have May-Beth, who has a broken back that will never heal and a spirit that will never be broken. MayBeth, who sings, “Jesus Loves Me” — loudly — and doesn’t care who’s listening.

Or who isn’t.

I will have Doc, who says to me every morning, “Welcome to the looney bin.”

And when I say, “Doc, that’s

no way to talk about the people you live with,” he’ll answer, “I’m talkin’ about you. You have to be crazy to work here.” And he’ll laugh and truly believe he’s slapping his knee in glee, even though he is paralyzed from the neck down.

I will have Joan, who doesn’t remember much of anything anymore, and the day she told me, “I can’t remember how to eat soup, so I’ll just eat ice cream.”

I will have these moments with all of my old friends who teach me every day the true meaning of courage, dignity, honor, grace and faith.

Who still believe and make me believe that anything is possible at any age.
