ro golfer Marco Dawson is playing like a champion since he joined the Champions Tour last

year. After more than 12 fruitless years on the PGA Tour, Dawson, 51, claimed his second Champions Tour victory of 2015 by winning the Senior British Open Championship on July 26 in Berkshire, England. Honored for his victory with a poolside reception Aug. 7 at Suntree Country Club, Dawson recalled how he felt on the 18th green as he lined up for a 25-foot birdie putt that would seal the biggest win of his career. “I knew it was the last hole so I had one chance, and if I made the putt I knew it was going to be over,” said Dawson, whose wife, Heather, accompanied him to England. “So I Presort Std U.S. Postage PAID Orlando, FL Permit No. 1979

was the only one left in the field that could win the tournament outright. If I make my putt, it’s all over. Nobody else can win. It doesn’t matter what anybody else does. And even if Colin Montgomerie made his putt it didn’t matter. So all that I focused on was that I make my putt. So that’s all I wanted to do, and it worked out.”

New Buffalo Wild Wings is ready for football frenzy BY MIKE GAFFEY

Preseason is over for the new Buffalo Wild Wings in Viera. It’s time for football. “Our staff has no idea what they’re in for,” said James Pettis, general manager of the family-friendly sports bar and restaurant, which opened May 25 at 7191 Lake Andrew Drive. “Opening over the holiday was nice, and you usually get a couple months’ honeymoon over the summer. It was perfect for us. It got us right through the summer and right into the start of school. “And now football’s here,

and football’s our bread and butter.” With a menu featuring burgers, sandwiches and Buffalo-style wings, a wide variety of domestic, imported and craft beers, and 59 indoor and outdoor televisions, one of the newest Buffalo Wild Wings in the 1,080-restaurant chain is ready for fired-up football fans of all ages. Visitors might think they’ve stumbled into a sports stadium when they enter the 6,000-square foot restaurant, which seats 255 people. Booths are numbered like stadium seats. Interior walls are brick. And big-screen

TVs positioned above the bar resemble a Jumbotron. “It’s very open, very airy,” Pettis said of the interior design. “Anywhere you sit you can see 17 to 18 different TVs, so it’s perfect, especially at football season.” With 10 satellite dishes, four cable boxes and streaming capabilities, the restaurant can show all the big games in all sports at no charge, Pettis said. “We pack them in, especially UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) events,” he said. “We’ve done a couple of those. That’s about the closest thing the staff has seen to football and it’s standing room only. It is absolutely intense.” The menu features traditional and boneless wings and 21 signature sauces ranging from mild to “Blazin’.” Staff “captains” go from table to table, handing out sauce samples so customers can pick a favorite. Patrons can choose from seven styles of burgers and sandwiches or build their own from a list of items. Salads, wraps, chicken tenders and popcorn shrimp also are available. Side dishes include thincrust flatbreads, spinach artichoke dip, roasted garlic mushrooms, cheese curds and slammers ― bitesized cheeseburgers or pulled-pork sandwiches. Some of the five desserts to choose from include ice cream, cheesecake bites and chocolate fudge cake. Kids have their own menu featuring wings, tenders and macaroni and cheese. Youngsters also get their own hand-held “Buzztime Players” stocked with video games to keep them entertained at the table while

they wait for food, Pettis said. “The one thing that separates us from most sports bars is the fact that we are kid-friendly,” Pettis said. “We’re a family restaurant first and a sports bar second.” The Minneapolis-based chain also is committed to giving and to helping local youth, with a goal of donating $6 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America by 2017. Regular customers can donate part of their bill to their favorite charity each time they dine by applying to the chain’s “Eat Wings, Raise Funds” program. Buffalo Wild Wings also caters to fantasy football fans, hosting draft day

parties and providing free fantasy draft kits, Pettis said. “We give them flags for smack talk and coupons to use throughout the year,” he said. “Plus, they get to pick their own seats.” Pettis said he’s “very happy” with the community’s response since the restaurant opened. “I think Viera needed something like this up here,” he said. “This is something uniquely dynamic because we are a kids’ place. So we really pride ourselves on the fact that we are family friendly.” For more information, call 321-638-0882 or go to buffalowildwings.com. VV

Raising backyard chickens is big these days but not every neighborhood allows them and not every family has the space or desire to build a chicken coop in their yard. To fill that growing need the county 4-H program has a range of market and purebred poultry programs — and cooperative coops in Cocoa and Melbourne — so any child from age 5 to 18 can have the chance to raise a laying hen. “We’ve got more kids who have signed on to do it at home but we’ve really seen a spike in the cooperative coops,” said Vanessa SperoSwingle who works with youth development for 4-H. “Now you don’t have the commitment of having to build their own coops. places you can have chickens, some places you can’t. Sometimes that’s confusing. You know you can have chickens here. It’s a family project. They go and visit a minimum one day a month to help with all the chickens out there. Overall, it’s just fun and the kids love it. It’s a good project for people who don’t grow up on a farm.” There is a $25 fee per chicken to be part of the cooperative coops at Lake Drive in Cocoa and in the westernmost equestrian stalls at Wickham Park in Melbourne. Participants must visit at least once per month to do chores and check on all the birds. The Market Poultry Program, now in it’s fifth year, prompted the creation of the cooperative coops. Wickham Park holds more than 100 birds and geese and ducks and now also houses purebred poultry, Spero-Swingle said. “If they want to do the market and sell them at auction they can do that project, but they can show the birds based on the breed and that standard and they are able to keep them,” she said. Lila Justice, 15, a sophomore at Viera High School, has raised laying hens for market through a 4-H program.

Being a good role model as a dad is something that remains an influence on your kids long after you are gone. Learning how to create that lasting legacy through actions in the here-and-now is the thought behind the JustBeCAUSE men’s event held Aug. 16 at the Church at Viera. “It’s getting dads out here in the community and talking together that we can be involved and motivating each other to want to be better men and be a good example in our kids’ lives, boys and girls,” said organizer Dan Hancock, who lost his father last year. Hancock read “We’ll Always Be Pals,” published in 2008 by former NFL player Tom McManus, who came south from his home in Ponte Vedra Beach. “I didn’t do the event last year just because I lost my dad and didn’t have the heart for it. I had read his book and I connected with it. I wanted to challenge myself to do the event like this this year. “Especially when they’re gone, you realize how big an impact dads have. For the important stuff, you’ve got to be there,” Hancock said. McManus, a motivational speaker for 15 years, was one of the original Jacksonville

Penny Creek highlights Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival BY GEORGE WHITE AND LINDA WIGGINS

The fourth Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll gets underway Oct. 1 through 15, culminating with the Harvest Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at The Avenue Viera featuring the popular Penny Creek Band. A constant in the Brevard County bluegrass scene since it officially formed in 2005, the group plays a full slate of standards, occasionally branching out slightly into country and swing. In addition to picking fast and improvising at full speed, Penny Creek is also known for tight harmonies on their vocals. “The Penny Creek Band has been a hit at the festival, so we are thrilled to have them back,” said Jill Gaines, CEO of Bluewater Creative Group, publisher of Viera Voice and Senior Life newspapers and Viera MD and Boomer Guide magazines as well as creator of popular expos and events. Accomplished banjo player Isaac Taylor, of Vero Beach, joined Penny Creek in 2008. “I heard it played on the ‘Andy Griffith Show’ and ‘O Brother Where Art Thou’.” I wanted at age 13 to quit

piano because I was bored with it. My mom said I could quit but I had to pick up another instrument. I just jokingly said I’ll just do banjo, so I got a banjo and I just fell in love with it,’’ he said. Band leader Susan Pounds, who plays standup bass and mandolin, was surprised when she first heard the young picker. “It’s very difficult to find a banjo player and when I heard Isaac I was totally impressed,” she said. Guitar player Chris Paganoni of Merritt Island joined in 2013 and also started playing at age 13 influenced by his father, who built bluegrass mandolins in Manassas, Va.

“My father’s instruments are used by a lot of the famous bluegrass bands. I grew up with those guys coming to the house. I didn’t know how lucky I was,’’ he said. The band’s fiddle player from day one is Bo Frazer, who lives in the Eau Gallie area. Frazer took up music in Philadelphia back during the folk music surge in the ’60s and ’70s. There are few more appropriate places to hear bluegrass than the Harvest Festival, Pounds said. “Now it’s going to be in The Avenue Viera which is really cool. They had bales of hay for people to sit on. It’s always a very attentive audience,’’ Pounds said.

Businesses are invited to build a scarecrow to generate foot traffic along a mapped route across the greater Viera/ Suntree area, the public coming to view and vote on the unique creation for the People’s Choice top award trophy and bragging rights for the year. The ’crows will be on silent auction to benefit charity that feeds hungry families. “Creating a scarecrow is a fun, team-building exercise that gives employees an even greater sense of pride in their workplace,” Gaines said. “The public loves having fun, free activities and events to enjoy, not to mention chances to win great prizes for their efforts. Also, it’s wonderful to know that the business you patronize cares about the community, and that your support of it is helping a charity,’’ she said. A pull-out map will be published in October’s Viera Voice that is also a ballot, showing readers where to go to see the scarecrows and get a secret code as proof. The more scarecrows they enjoy, the more valuable the prizes there are up for grabs when they drop off their ballots at locations in east, west, north and south areas of greater Viera.

Live, Work & Play!

Schools will also create schoolcrows, to be posted at business booster locations along the route for viewing and voting, with the People’s Choice award trophy going to the crowd favorite. The scarecrows and schoolcrows will be moved to the festival for judging for Artistic Creativity and a $500 prize sponsored by Viera Voice, and placed up for silent auction to benefit either the charity or the school. New this year is the kids’ Mini-Crow building contest open to children in age groups of 6 to 9 and 10 to 15, with a total of $100 in gift certificates as prizes. The Harvest Festival is where the public can stroll to see the best of all the ’crows in one place, and enjoy other free activities in addition to music, such as pumpkin patch and the Viera Voice signature Zucchini 500 car race, where children build their own racers from actual aerodynamic green squash with axles and wheels. For more information, to register to build a scarecrow or schoolcrow, to sponsor attractions at the Harvest Festival or obtain exhibitor space, go to VieraVoice.com or call 321-242-1235. VV

Young Tigers look to light up football scoreboard

BY CARL KOTALA

They may not have a lot of experience, or a deep bench. But if you want to beat the Holy Trinity football team this season, there is something you’re going to have to do: Score a lot of points. “I don’t think we’ll be in any 7-3 games,” Tigers coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. Led by sophomore receiver Jashaun Corbin, who is already getting looks from major Division I college programs, Holy Trinity’s offense figures to be in high octane mode this season. “It’s going to be very highscoring,” junior quarterback Jacquel (Joc) Perry said. “It’s (a) no-huddle, air it out (offense). Defenses are going to get tired. That’s why we

quarterback last season behind Daniel Welch, this will be Perry’s first full season leading the offense for the Tigers. He said he has improved on his footwork, his accuracy and his strength. “I got a little bit of a test (last year), and the spring game this year,” he said. “I feel like I’m ready.”

In addition to Corbin, the Tigers will rely on senior wide receiver Matt Austin. Known more for his skills on the soccer field, Austin should be ready to surprise people this season, Hooks said. Other key Tigers include senior center James Rauhofer, senior offensive lineman/linebacker Andre

Neuharth, freshman cornerback Cortez Reed and Cameron McKenzie, a 6-foot-9, 311-pound senior from England who had never played football until last year. McKenzie is being moved from tackle to guard this season. While the Tigers definitely have talent, they will also have three freshmen starting on defense and an eighth grader starting on their offensive line. With only 28 players on the roster, depth will once again be a concern, especially in a tough district that features traditional powers Melbourne Central Catholic and John Carroll. The season opened Aug. 28 at home against Cornerstone Academy followed by a game at Jacksonville Harvest. After a bye week, the Tigers will host MCC on Sept. 18. “As long as we improve, that’s a successful season,” Hooks said. “Being better than you were yesterday, better than you were last week. Ultimately, that equals better than you were last season. That’s how we’ll measure success.” As the undermanned Tigers have shown in the past, it would be a mistake to overlook them. “I think we’re going to try to pull some rabbits out of our hats,” Hooks said. “We’ve got six home games this year. We’ve got to produce at home. All I want is to pursue getting better, pursue perfection. “If we continue to get better than we are now, we’ll win some games.” VV

With nine returning players and six returning starters back from last year’s team, the Viera High volleyball team has the talent to do something special this season. “Potentially, it has the possibility to be one of our best teams,” Hawks coach Sarah Wayne said. “But they have to figure out what it’s going to take to play at a high level.” With players like senior Cailea Gibbs, a standout middle blocker who recently committed to the University of North Florida, the Hawks certainly don’t lack for motivation. Gibbs and nearly all of her teammates played club volleyball in the offseason, with some even making the drive to play for the Orlando Volleyball Academy. “We’ve gotten so much better in the offseason,” Gibbs said. “It’s not really pressure for the seniors, but it is our last year of high school and we want to leave a legacy in some way.” Other seniors hoping to leave their mark are setter Lina Ruiz, right-side hitter Danee Smith, middle blocker Kendall Mall and right side/ middle Ariana Casingal. Together, the Hawks are an impressive group. “Offensively, we’re really strong,” Wayne said. “We have multiple players who can do multiple things from all different positions. And we have good height. We’re tall this year. “And this core group of

kids has been together for a while.” That experience of playing together should really pay off because the players know each other on and off the court so well. They are also eager to wipe away the memory of last year’s 14-12 season. “It’s going to help just because we’re starting where we left off last year,” Gibbs said. “We were disappointed. We had high hopes last year and we didn’t quite fulfill what we were (aiming for). “But we have gotten a few extra people and we’re all reaching toward a common goal and I think we’re going to be really successful this year.” The Hawks, who opened the season Aug. 24 at Astronaut, will face a key early-season stretch in September with three

straight matchups against district opponents Melbourne (Sept. 2), St. Cloud (Sept. 3) and Celebration (Sept. 8). The annual Pink Game is set for Oct. 13 against Holy Trinity. If the idea of leaving a legacy isn’t enough motivation, all the Hawks have to do is remember the feeling they had when the school’s girls golf and soccer teams both won state championships. “Just seeing them as a team, it really makes you motivated to experience that with your team yourself,” Gibbs said. “… Golf and soccer, we want to be a part of that. Even if we don’t make it to state, we want to be up there on that banner somewhere.” VV

Hawks poised for another big football season BY CARL KOTALA

There were a lot of firsts for the Viera High football program last season. The two biggest, of course, were the first unbeaten regular season and the first district title in school history. But as the new season begins, this is a Viera team that still feels like it has something to prove, and still has history to make. “We had a decent season last year,” senior cornerback

Trevor Merritt said. “We shocked a few people. But we have a lot to prove still. We know we have the talent this year. We’re just ready to play.” And play the Hawks will, against a schedule that looks like a who’s who list of Brevard County powerhouses. Cocoa. Palm Bay. Merritt Island. They’re all there. So is Lakeland Kathleen and Allen, Texas. Yes, Allen, Texas. But as far as Hawks coach Kevin Mays is concerned

there are really only three opponents that matter — Melbourne, Martin County and South Fork. “As long as our guys keep an even head and feel good about what they’re doing going into these tougher games and don’t get tense, I think we can play with the teams that are on our schedule,” Mays said. “We’ve talked all year about the games we have to concentrate on are the district games. That’s the games. As much as people want to look at some of the other games on the schedule, the district games are the ones that count. I told the seniors if they want the season to move on, those are the games you’ve got to win.” As good as the Hawks were last year, they may be even more balanced this season thanks to the improvement of last year’s returners and an injection of new talent. Quarterback Hayden Kingston is back, and heavily recruited receiver Tré Nixon figures to get plenty of attention. But the Hawks are deep at receiver with transfer Alex Cabrera, sophomore

Quinton Richard and Don Jackson. Running back Zack Blanch is one of the more underrated players in the county. Up front, Viera will be led by Hunter Ulrich, Blake Ward and Brian Pickles. Defensively, leading tackler Brandon Mays is back along with defensive linemen Marco Foreman and Justin Harrison and a defensive backfield that includes Merritt, Evan Cruz, Jay Boyd, Lance Reynolds and

transfers Will Champion and Malek Folston. By playing such a tough regular season schedule, the Hawks believe their next trip to the playoffs will be much better than last year’s 48-0 loss to Charlotte. “That was a good thing that happened,” Merritt said. “We see that we can be knocked down. Now, we know how to get back up. That was a lot of motivation.” VV

Timing, silent auction boost pre-holiday sale

BY LINDA WIGGINS

The Suntree United Methodist Church fall event known as Attic Treasures is expected to be even more popular this year for two reasons. The 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 sale is known for its “high quality products and specialty items of good style” and large bake sale, co-organizer Merle Gelles said. New this year is a silent auction of more than 100 donated gift certificates and new items, including Disney

Park-Hopper tickets for four valued at $620. “This is expected to increase the benefit to the charities the sale supports,” volunteer Nancy Short said. Charities include Daily Bread soup kitchen in Melbourne; Devereux residential school for children with behavioral and developmental challenges; the Salvation Army Women’s Shelter; and the Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children requiring emergency housing. The second reason is that the major Christmas Bazaar

that typically follows in November will go on hiatus for one year as the church settles in new pastors for the first time in 12 years. Gelles is requesting donations of auction prizes or items for the sale, such as small appliances, cookware, glassware, antiques or collectibles, seasonal items, jewelry, bedding, linens, books, toys, sporting goods, pictures, mirrors, silk flowers, CDs, DVDs and miscellaneous items. Items can be dropped off from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 at the church,

Suntree CC salutes Dawson’s Senior British Open win continued from page 1

The Florida Southern College graduate and Merritt Island resident followed up his win in England with a fifth-place finish Aug. 2 at the Champions Tour’s 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn. Dawson shot 13-under-par 203, five strokes behind winner and defending champion Kenny Perry. He finished the three-day tournament with 15 birdies and two bogeys, pocketing $83,125. His mother, Francesca, also a Merritt Island resident, carried his bags for him. Dawson, who turned pro in 1985 and played more than 400 PGA events without a victory, won the Tucson Conquistadores Classic in March and earned $255,000. He finished in the money but not near the top in the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Wash. Aug. 21 to 23. “The last five years I’ve been driving and putting really well,” Dawson said of his recent successes. “Once you start getting to the point where you’re driving and putting well and you’re always in play, then it becomes a game of course management: Where am I going to put this ball, where are the bad spots, where is the trouble, how do I stay away from that, instead of

He wears a lot of hats. As the new assistant principal at Viera Charter School, Tom Armstrong is charged with watching over and developing the facilities at the school, which just started its third year serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. He’s also the athletic director, making sure students have an opportunity to take part in league activities and any other extracurricular activity. “It’s my first opportunity as

an athletic director, but I’ve been involved in athletics my whole life,” said Armstrong, who coached for 17 years at Palm Bay High School, including varsity basketball, swimming, football and baseball at different times from 1980 to 1997. In 2006, he was the Brevard County School District Assistant Principal of the Year at Eau Gallie High School focusing on facilities, eventually retiring from the school district. Most recently, he was the principal at Melbourne Central Catholic High School until a heart health scare

suffered on the tennis court convinced him to resign to focus on his health. “I missed the kids and I certainly feel like I have a lot to contribute, and this job opened up that was a great opportunity for me,” Armstrong said of the school, which has a focus on STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and math — and enjoys many partnerships between the space and defense industry and the Florida Institute of Technology and other higher education. VCS administration

For VCS principal Dr. Julie Cady, a strong right hand man means more time for one-on-one. “My goal this year is to be in our classrooms more, interacting with our students, having professional conversations with teachers about the curriculum and instruction that is taking place,” Cady said. “My ultimate objective is not only to provide a safe social emotional learning environment, but also to provide an educational environment that maximizes students’ capacity to learn.” As the school welcomes 200 new students for an expanded capacity of nearly 950 students, facilities inside the school are also rolling out. New this year is the Robotics Lab and a Radio Station and TV/Video Production Studio.

The schools’ two deans also have their areas of focus in the coming year. “I’ll focus on providing the teachers and students the appropriate curriculum resources needed to meet the instructional rigor facilitated in the classrooms,” said Michelle Norcross, Dean of Curriculum and Assessments. As with public schools, VCS is navigating the Florida education transition in how learning is evaluated. And while Chenistique Goizueta’s title is Dean of Students or dean of discipline, think of the D word more as study skills than punishment. “My focus is on making sure students are following their progression plan to make sure they are successful for whatever journey they decide to take after middle school.” For more information, call the school at 321-541-1343. Teachers vow to start each day with a ‘fresh mind’ BY LINDA WIGGINS

When Quest Elementary School principal Elia “Ellie” Lea brought powerhouse motivational speaker John Perricone in to address area teachers Aug. 5, she had an ulterior motive. Administrators need a pep talk as much as teachers. Lea organized the workshop for teachers at Viera High, Kennedy Middle, Ralph Williams Elementary, Suntree Elementary and Longleaf Elementary schools and held it in the VHS auditorium. “Mr. Perricone spoke of the importance of having a ‘fresh mind,’ what he calls ‘sho shin,’ and to come excited

to teach everyday like it is our first day and yet leave the imprint on the minds of students like it is our last,” Lea said. Perricone was a health educator and psychology teacher in the Maine-Endwell School District in upstate New York for 31 years. He won local, state and national “Excellence in Teaching” awards, and he has been the recipient of Maine-Endwell’s Distinguished Teacher Award for 12 consecutive years since its inception. The award is voted on and presented by the Senior Class. He is a best-selling author and a nationally sought keynote speaker.

It’s key to focus on the difference teachers make daily in a child’s life for the rest of their lives, Lea said. “Ask nearly anyone what made them choose their career path or make some other major positive change in their life, and very frequently you will hear them say it was because a teacher believed in them,”

Married to Elizabeth “Betsy,” they have a son, Shaun, 11, entering sixth grade at Ascension Catholic School, James is in 10th grade at Eau Gallie High School and Benjamin starts at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville with sights on becoming a Gator at the University of Florida. He’s no stranger to the task of fundraising, which helps when you focus on facilities and athletics, since sports is looked upon as a luxury in terms of academics and often must pay its own

Lea said. “While teaching at times can bring along its day-to-day challenges, it is important that we remember that every person has their own unique story. Tapping into the passion, compassion, warmth and kindness brought on by a teacher will help to bring a sense of happiness and comfort to the people we touch on a daily basis.” VV way. He’s excited about the proposed partnership with the YMCA Family Center planned next door. “You start asking yourself these questions, where do we practice, what do we do with the kids when it rains?” Armstrong said of his shopping list that merely starts with a gymnasium and a swimming pool, just some of the facilities the school and the YMCA hope to share. Armstrong is in on the ground floor and he’s prepared for the long haul. “I’m all in,” he said. For more information, call the school at 321-541-1343. VV

Alba helping Hawks continue to take flight

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Mike Alba is entering his second year as principal at Viera High School. BY CARL KOTALA

Mike Alba may be entering his second year as the Viera High principal, but make no mistake about it: He’s always been a Hawk. In fact, the 44-year-old was part of the school’s original administration when Viera High opened in 2006. He served as the assistant principal in charge of facilities for six years before returning to Cocoa Beach Junior/ Senior High School, where his teaching and administrative career first began. When the opportunity to become Head Hawk presented itself prior to last year, it was one he couldn’t pass up. “I always felt part of this school and part of the family,” Alba said. “To have the opportunity to come back … I was very excited about that.” Knowing many of the staff and members of the local business community made for a smooth transition. “I think it helped knowing how the various academies run, how vital the music program is to the overall success of our school, knowing the history of our athletic program … (and) knowing many of the faculty already and having their trust already,” he said. “I think it made a huge difference.” As Viera starts its 10th year, Alba took time to reflect on his first year as principal

It’s how you get there.

and what lies ahead. “I believe we had a very successful year in many areas,” he said of the 2014-15 academic year. Alba referenced the Hawk Nation Spirit Squad and the Hawk Buddy Program, which pairs special needs students with other students to ensure every student feels they are part of the student body. He also pointed to a student-led Dance Marathon, which raised $6,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Three seniors were selected as National Merit Scholarship Finalists and 40 seniors earned Associate of Arts degrees through Eastern Florida State College to go with their high school diplomas. This year, Viera students can earn a distinction that will help them stand out on college applications by completing the AP Capstone Diploma Program. Students must pass four AP classes of their choice, along with two new AP courses that help students research and write a long-term research paper. “I think I’m probably even more excited about this new school year, just having built the relationship with the teachers and students and the community,” Alba said. “I absolutely see the potential of Viera High School to be, I believe, one of the best high schools in Florida.” VV

Back-to-school photos make community ‘feel like family’ BY LINDA WIGGINS

Manatee Elementary School PTO president Nicki Hensley had fun with the fact that her son, Cooper, got the same teacher as older sister Lily did in a previous year. He wore a shirt specially made that read: “Hensley, The Sequel.” “We have a lot of fun, both as a family and as a school family with teachers, staff, students and their families,” said Hensley, who deemed the teacher meet-and-greet the day before as “hat day.” “If I had thought of it, I could have included one of mom doing the back-to-school happy dance right about 8 a.m.” Families from across the Viera/Suntree area sent in photos from their child’s first day to VieraVoice.com and many were posted to the Viera Voice Facebook page. April Murray captured three generations in her Suntree Elementary back-toschool photos, if you count behind the camera as well as in front. Grandma Kitty Hatton posed with daughter Allie, while son Cole greeted teacher Holly Keesecker in the classroom. A popular practice is to post said photos on Facebook. The trend makes it possible to share with family members and friends outside the area. “I just love seeing all the pictures of the first day of school from my Florida family,” said Athena Bauerle, who moved this past year to

Philadelphia for her husband’s job, which meant she had to leave her Suntree community and Quest Elementary school. Her son, Andrew started at a new school in the North later in the month, but her son, Robert, returned to Florida as a freshman at the University of Central Florida, and he’ll stay

Business leaders get update on Viera Company projects BY MIKE GAFFEY

Representatives of The Viera Company presented an update on numerous construction projects during an Aug. 12 meeting of the Viera Suntree Business Council of the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida. Projects for the rapidly growing area include new residential communities as well as road construction, Scott Miller, vice president of sales and community management and president/ broker for Viera Realty, Inc., and Todd Pokrywa, senior vice president for land use planning and development, told attendees. “We’re one of the top master planned communities in the country, and over the next several years we’re looking forward to moving into the Top 20, and hopefully the Top 10,” Miller said. New communities planned for Viera include Addison Village, just south of Health First’s Viera Hospital which is the first of four planned village-style communities. Some 4,000 residential units are planned in several neighborhoods in Addison Village: initially Reeling Park North, a community near the currently-under-construction Strom Park; Seville, a 49-lot gated community just south of the traffic circle; Trasona, a community on land west of Stadium Parkway and south of Wickham Road; and Valencia, a 69-unit gated

The unique Strom Park is the first community of the new west Viera area, which ultimately will be home to nearly 30,000 new residents.

community just south of Seville. A village center will serve as a community gathering place as well as a location for commercial uses. Addison Village neighborhoods will feature numerous amenities and be connected by a network of streets and trails to encourage walking, biking and other recreational activities. Sales are set to start this year for Adelaide, a high-end 150-lot gated community in Viera’s northern section, Miller said. Community amenities are planned to include a five-acre park, a private 120-acre central recreational lake, tennis courts and a jogging trail system. New Viera residents are a mix of young professionals, older Brevardians

downsizing to smaller homes, residents from the Orlando and Miami areas seeking better schools and less congestion, and Northerners, Miller said. “We get our fair share of people from the Mid-Atlantic, Virginia, D.C., Maryland area,” he said. The Viera Company is juggling several road construction projects that it is fully funded, Pokrywa said. Chief among them is the six-laning of Wickham Road from Murrell Road to the traffic circle. Originally planned for completion this year, the $10 million project has been hampered by heavy rains and won’t be finished until 2016. Work also is proceeding on widening Stadium Parkway from the Fiske Boulevard-Interstate-95 interchange to just north

of the Viera Boulevard intersection, Pokrywa said, improving Stadium Parkway south of Wickham Road, and extending Lake Andrew Drive south, where it eventually will link with the Pineda Causeway interchange. The company is also contributing about $12 million to a current roadway improvements project on Barnes Boulevard. The Viera Co. also will pay for widening sections of Viera Boulevard from two lanes to four lanes, Pokrywa said. Work will coincide with a $7.5 million Florida Department of Transportation project that will transform the Viera Boulevard interchange into a “diverging diamond” interchange. The project is expected to start in 2017, he said.

The interchange project will help set the stage for development of a proposed regional commerce center/ office park at the southwest quadrant of Viera Boulevard and l-95, Pokrywa said. Nearly 300 businesses have opened in Viera and have created about 10,000 jobs, or one for every Viera household, Pokrywa said. The company agreed to more than $40 million in roadway improvements as mitigation for transportation network impacts when the Brevard County Commission approved future development in west Viera in 2009. “You’ve got to be able to get in and out of the community if you’re going to live here and if you’re going to locate your business here, so we’re getting ahead of the curve in many instances and making those improvements now,” Pokrywa said. Brevard strikes stadium deal with USSSA BY MIKE GAFFEY

The U.S. Specialty Sports Association has a new home in Viera. Brevard County Commissioners voted 4-1 on Aug. 6 to approve a 20-year lease agreement with the nonprofit amateur sports organization for the use of Space Coast Stadium once the Washington Nationals move their spring training operations to West Palm Beach. The Nationals and Houston Astros, who are leaving Kissimmee, plan to share a facility expected to be completed in spring 2017. As part of the agreement, Brevard would reimburse the USSSA for $10 million in upgrades to the stadium complex, with funds coming from the county’s 5 percent tourist development tax on hotels and rental units. Currently headquartered in Kissimmee, the USSSA plans to host 175 days a year of youth sporting events at the 8,100-seat stadium and nearby fields along Stadium Parkway. The USSSA presents events in a dozen amateur sports, including baseball, fast- and slow-pitch softball and basketball. “We’re looking forward to coming here and hanging our hat here for the next 20 years,” Don DeDonatis, USSSA chairman and chief executive officer, told commissioners. DeDonatis said the USSSA will guarantee 75,000 room nights of hotel rentals in its first year and 100,000 room nights by its third year in Brevard. The organization also will heavily promote Brevard County at all events, he said. Eric Garvey, executive director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism, said the USSSA’s numerous events will attract tourists who will “stabilize our market.” “It will reduce the difference between our peaks and our valleys, and that will do wonders for our tourismrelated businesses beyond hotels,” Garvey said. “Our restaurants will no longer have

USSSA chairman and chief executive officer Don DeDonatis said the Space Coast Stadium lease approved by Brevard County Commissioners Aug. 6 will generate 75,000 hotel room rentals in its first year.

to hire and fire just for peak seasons. They will be more stable. Our attractions will have more families visiting them. So there are intangible benefits that go beyond room-night generation.” Dave Spain, owner of Comfort Inn & Suites in Cocoa Beach since 1972, said the USSSA’s arrival, along with a thriving Port Canaveral and a reviving space program, should help jumpstart the local economy. “They are the name, they’re the ones, they’re the big boys,” Spain said of the USSSA. “They’re the ones we want to be involved with and I can’t tell you how excited the hotel industry and tourism industry is to have this opportunity.” Commissioner Trudie Infantini, who voted against the agreement, said she thought the county was wrong to invest taxpayer funds in a private business and that the funds would be better spent on cleaning up the Indian River Lagoon. She questioned why the USSSA didn’t strike a deal with the owner of Cocoa Expo at State Road 520 just west of Interstate 95. “How can we justify using $10 million in tax dollars to make improvements to a stadium when we have another individual who invested $30 million of their own money to provide

virtually the exact same facility?” Infantini asked. DeDonatis said the USSSA likely will need 25 to 30 playing fields for all its events and already has discussed hosting games on fields at Cocoa Expo. The lease agreement leaves in question the future of the Brevard County Manatees, a Class A Florida State League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers and a stadium tenant since 1994. Manatees general manager Kyle Smith proposed a fiveyear lease deal to the county, but Commission Chairman Robin Fisher said the USSSA proposal was much better. Commissioner Curt Smith said Manatees officials want the team to stay in Viera and want to work with the USSSA. “They’re not bringing the finances you guys are,” Smith said to USSSA representatives, “but they are an asset to the community.” The Manatees already have discussed leaving Viera after the Nationals depart. Plans to move the team to Rollins College in Winter Park fell through in 2014 and Melbourne commissioners killed a plan earlier this year to build a smaller stadium in downtown Melbourne. The team also has approached Palm Bay about the possibility of erecting a stadium at U.S. 1 and Port Malabar Boulevard. VV

Pickleball’s popularity soars across Viera, Brevard BY JEFF NAVIN

Once school started throughout Brevard in August, Phil McGibney and his pickleball buddies couldn’t wait to place the lines on the courts at the Viera Regional Park Community Center. Summer activities had concluded for children with the beginning of the

new school term and it was time for pickleball to resume its busy schedule of five afternoons a week at the popular gathering place. McGibney is the site coordinator for pickleball at the Community Center and at Health First Pro-Health and Fitness Center in Viera. McGibney left his native Mississippi after Hurricane

Katrina and eventually ended up in Viera in the fall of 2006. “When I got here, I asked, ‘Where can I play pickleball?’ People said, ‘What the heck is pickleball?’ Now, we’ve got quite a group. It’s like racquetball more than anything else. And tennis. I still can hit the tennis ball, but I can’t move around the court as well as the past. It’s about the same as a badminton court, so there’s not as much room to cover. I don’t have to jump up and down as much.” There are 14 venues in Brevard County where pickleballl players can play their favorite sport. As the USAPA Central Florida District Ambassador, Scott Nelson is pleased with the growth of the sport. “We’ve got the 14 venues and there are about 550 players that I know about who play,” Nelson said. “That’s my email list. But, I know there’s more than that who play.” Baytree resident Dennis Weckerly, who has lived in Brevard since 2002, was introduced to the sport by his sister-in-law, who lives in South Carolina, about five years ago. “I was primarily a basketball and soccer player when I was

The people who introduced me to pickleball have been generous with their time and in guiding me with the rules and manner of play. I have found that comforting. It could have been intimidating.” For more information on pickleball in Brevard County, contact Nelson at 321-6264937. For a more detailed story, go to VieraVoice.com. VV

He presented a check for $5,221 at the July 21 Brevard School Board meeting to the Brevard Schools Foundation for its Take Stock in Children program. “It’s not a given that we can all have this opportunity for higher education,” said Freeman, whose parents Carolyn and step-dad Frank Ibbotson, retired teacher and retired administrator, came in from out of town to attend the ceremony. “For these students who are in high school and are putting an effort into their studies, this program helps them get on to college, and I like that all the money we have donated is matched by the state to help it go even further.” Freeman raised the money from July to January by putting a dollar from each premium package car wash toward the fund. The business in itself is a contribution to education. Half of the employees who work hard drying and buffing freshly washed cars are students in high school and half are working their way through college. The business is a great inspiration for others to follow, said Brevard Schools Foundation director Janice Kershaw. “When businesses invest in education, they are getting a great return in a stronger, more prosperous community.” For more information on the program, go to brevardschoolsfoundation.org and click Take Stock in Children.

Governor’s medal highlights WWII service BY LINDA WIGGINS

Suntree resident Malcolm “Mal” Roberts received the Governor’s Veterans Service Award at a ceremony in Miami July 27. “Honoring Those Who Served,” Roberts read, his thumb tracing the outline of the words on the back of the golden medal as he reflected on the honor. “What a great day. I felt very proud.” said Roberts, who nearly died on the battlefield and spent more than a year recovering in a hospital before being honorably discharged for medical reasons. The World War II rifleman served in the 399th Infantry Division on the front lines of France. He received the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur three years ago, France’s highest honor. After a long delay — a fire in a U.S. military records department destroyed his data — he finally received his medals earned from his military service. Among them awarded at an Indian River Colony Club ceremony 12 years ago were the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Marksman Badge, to name just a few. Attendees are the winners at WWII BBQ and video event BY LINDA WIGGINS

Chefs from three Viera-area senior communities racked up fan raves in the Battle for Best Barbecue at an Aug. 14 event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Viera Voice sister newspaper Senior Life was the Space Coast host of “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive,” a national campaign that inspired many different kinds of events across the nation. The local event at Space Coast Convention Center in Cocoa drew more than 600 attendees that included WWII veterans, women and children who remember the day first-hand and veterans and members of the community of all ages. Viera Manor veterans retirement community in Viera generated comments from attendees on its combination of spices in its smoked meats. “Barbecue is right up our alley because our residents love very traditional America food,” chef Brandy Nahass said as she dished up a sample. Fans commented on the authentic taste of the offerings of The Town Square Wuesthoff Assisted Living in Viera. It’s not surprising since chef Darren Greenup

is a barbecue veteran and teammate Trevor Delaney is a soul food-expert, both favoring dishes with Down South appeal. “We got a lot of comments that our barbecue brought back sweet memories of down home,” Greenup said. As a concerned parent, I sent the above information to Brevard Public Schools (BPS) along with a question: Would the superintendent support eliminating Styrofoam from Brevard schools, especially from our cafeterias? Unfortunately, I didn’t get an answer. When BPS was looking to hire a new superintendent, I sent a request to the board to consider a superintendent willing to make changes that would benefit the environment as well as the health and well-being of our kids and families. When revelers enjoy juicy chicken Marsala or tender stuffed baked flounder on the eve of the Swing for Charity Golf Tournament, they’ll be doing more than having fun. Viera Woman’s Club duo event organizers Judy DeAngelis and Eloise Lynagh will see to that. The Oct. 23 and 24 annual celebration has paired up with the Viera Elks Lodge 2817 for the first time to amplify the impact of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs group with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks club. “We try to get our members involved in doing things for a good cause and to have a good time at the same time. There is such a camaraderie of women getting together. I’ve made a lot of friends and connections in the community,” DeAngelis said. “This is one of our many various events that those of us with significant others can enjoy together, so it made sense to partner with the Elks who will do the same on this, and we will partner on their their upcoming tournament.” The “Par Tee” is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at Tradewinds restaurant at Duran Golf Club in Viera for golfers and non-golfers to enjoy the buffet and libations, live music by Pearl Joy & Howard, a $1,000 helicopter ball drop, gift basket auction and goodnatured smack talk about the following day’s game. The scramble-format tournament at Duran begins Saturday with 11 a.m. registration and a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start and includes hole-in-one prizes like $10,000 and a golf cart, golf ball launcher, putting and chipping contests, dinner and flighted awards. new owner. So far, I have learned good habits that I plan to bring to my new home. I am housebroken, crate trained, and am working hard to walk nice on a leash. My ideal home would be with a family that likes to play outside and go for long walks. Fetch is also one of my favorite pastimes. After a day of playing, I would love nothing more than to curl up on the couch next to you. Simply put, I am a sweet girl that is looking for stability and love. I am ready and waiting for my Disney happy ending. If you give me a chance I will love you always and forever. To contact the FFAS foster and adoption coordinators, go to adopt@ friendsforanimalsfl.org. VV

Hey there. My name is Bell, not to be confused with the Disney princess Belle. Although we do both have beautiful brown hair and are pretty cute. I am a four-year-old Labrador Mix that has been searching for my “Happily Forever After” for some time now. My awesome pals at Friends for Animals Sanctuary rescued me from the shelter back in July. I had been living there for three whole months. Trust me, that’s a really long while when you are on “dog time.” I was scared and lonely, and it was such a relief to go to a foster home. My new temporary digs are in a nice home that has given me time to develop trust with people. I currently live with two other dogs: Pebbles who is a fellow FFAS foster, and an older dog named Max. Pebbles has been a real pal, she has helped me make the transition from the shelter to a comfy house. It’s really nice to have furry pals to hang out with. I also share the home with two younger kids that give me lots of love. The girls even let me hang out in their princess tent. Overall, I’m a good dog that does well with kids of all ages. Before FFAS, my life was unstable, so it may take a little patience for VIERA VOICE Rachel Wick me to build trust with a Bell is getting trained while waiting for her forever home.

5K & Fun Run T

he Viera Medical Mile will get its first official planned event in January. Event host Viera MD authored the moniker that refers to the one-mile circuit up and down Spyglass Hill Road between Murrell Road and Baytree Drive. The Jan. 9 Viera Medical Mile 5K & Fun Run will kick off New Year’s resolutions with a day of active family fun. Proceeds will help meet the health and basic needs of families who take in or adopt children. The Viera Medical Mile Walk & Talk with the Doc series will invite the public and patients of the upscale medical-services area to get moving while they learn what else they can do to get more from a healthy lifestyle. Viera Medical Mile was officially named by Viera MD in its award-winning June 2014 issue by CEO Jill Blue-Gaines of Bluewater Creative Group, which also publishes Viera Voice, Senior Life, Boomer Guide and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide, and hosts many popular expos and events each year. For more information or to sponsor or host events, call 321-242-1235 or go to VieraMD.com. n
