108 journalists killed in 2013: IFJ Lokpal Bill gets President CII confident Kejriwal will Mukherjee's nod be industry friendly At least 108 journalists and media professionals, including 10 from India, were killed across the world while doing their jobs in 2013, according to the annual list released by the International Federation of Journalists. "At least 108 journalists and media staff lost their lives in targeted attacks, bomb attacks and other cross fire incidents around the world. The 23rd annual IFJ list shows that the deadliest regions for journalists were Asia Pacific, with 29 percent of the killings and the Middle East and Arab World with 27 percent," the IFJ said in a statement while releasing the list. The 23rd annual IFJ listed Syria as the most dangerous country for media professionals with 15 journalist deaths, followed by Iraq with 13, Pakistan, the Philippines and India with 10 each, Somalia with seven and Egypt with six. The number of killings is slightly down by 10 percent compared to last year's figure. The IFJ said that while the numbers of killings are down, levels of violence are still unacceptably high and there is an urgent need for governments to protect and enforce journalists' basic right to life. It has urged countries such as the Philippines, Pakistan and Iraq to take drastic action to stem the bloodbath. Region-wise, the Asia-Pacific was the worst, where it is estimated that 31 journalists were killed, followed by the Middle East and the Arab world with 29 journalists, and Africa with 22. Latin America comes in fourth position, with an estimated 20 media persons killed, and Europe recorded deaths of three journalists. The IFJ also said that violence against women journalists is on the increase. At least six women journalists lost their lives last year, while many others were the victims of sexual abuse, intimidation and discrimination. The federation has welcomed the UN resolution establishing an International Day to End Impunity Nov 23 every year to create awareness of crimes against journalists. "We give our full support to this new initiative which we believe will contribute to fighting impunity across the globe provided that governments are willing to adopt a zero tolerance approach to violence targeting journalists," said IFJ President Jim Boumelha in a statement.

NEW DELHI: The much-awaited Lokpal Bill has got the assent from President Pranab Mukherjee. The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 17 and by the Lok Sabha the next day. According to reports, the Lok Sabha secretariat sent a copy of the bill to the law ministry on Tuesday evening with the signature of Speaker Meira Kumar. It was then forwarded to Rashtrapati Bhavan for the president's signature. The movement for a Lokpal bill got steam after the agitation launched by veteran social activist Anna Hazare. TM
Earlier, he had voiced disapproval over the initial draft. He gave his thumbs up to the Lokpal bill during his recent fast in Ralegan-Siddhi in Maharashtra. The ruling Congress had made a fervent appeal to political parties to pass the bill during the winter session of parliament. The government has agreed to incorporate a key amendment demanded by the opposition BJP, which allows searches or raids by the CBI or police on an officer accused of corruption without notice. The proposed antigraft law provides for a Lokpal or national ombudsman to investigate corruption charges against public functionaries. The Lok Sabha had passed the Lokpal Bill in 2011 to create a Central Lokayukta.
New Delhi, Dec 28 (IANS) The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Saturday congratulated Arvind Kejriwal for becoming Delhi's chief minister and said it was sure his government will be industry friendly. The CII said it would

Santosh Shukla (CEO of Alma Kids), Dr. Suchita Shukla (GM), Dr. Dilip N Small steps to Mars Pandit, Dr. Monica Nagori, Dr. Rajeev Shrivastav and others congratulated Shri Dhairyavir Sinh Juyendra Singh Rathod and Kirpul Sinh Jayadip are a big leap for Punvar and his staff. Indian companies IIML opens its Training Center Virtual SEZ' status sought for Indian companies that built most of the parts for the country's recently launched Mars mission are using their low-cost, high-tech expertise in frugal space engineering to compete for global aerospace, defence and nuclear contracts worth billions. Mangalyaan spacecraft was launched last month and then catapulted from Earth orbit on December 1, clearing an important hurdle on its 420 million mile journey to Mars and putting it on course to be the first Asian mission to reach the red planet. The venture has a price tag of just 4.5 billion rupees, roughly one-tenth the cost of Maven, NASA's latest Mars mission. Two-thirds of the parts for the Indian probe and rocket were made by domestic firms like Larsen & Toubro , the country's largest engineering firm, Godrej & Boyce, and state plane-maker Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. While such companies have a long way to go before they can attract big business in the commercial space sector, years of work on homegrown space projects are helping them carve out a niche as suppliers of precision parts for related sectors like defence, aeronautics and nuclear energy. Those firms with proven space know-how will find themselves with the advantage as India, the world's biggest arms importer, shells out $100 billion over a decade to modernise its military with the country favouring local sources. India in June strengthened a defence policy stipulating that local firms must be considered first for contracts and foreign companies winning contracts worth more than 3 billion rupees must "offset" at least 30 percent of the deal's value in India. "We think over the next two to three years we will be able to convert this into a profit centre," said S. M. Vaidya, the business head of Godrej's aerospace division, which made the rocket's engine and fuelpowered thrusters for the Indian Mars probe. Thanks to the space work, the company's engineers now know how to handle the specific metal alloys and the high-precision welding needed for aircraft and missiles as well as rockets, Vaidya added. Godrej has worked with India's space agency for almost three decades and in recent years started making engine parts for aircraft makers Boeing Co , the Airbus unit of EADS and Israel's state-owned Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd. It is in talks with Boeing to make parts for aircraft frames. HOME-GROWN, GO IT ALONE India launched its domestic space program 50 years ago and had to develop its own rocket technology after Western powers levied sanctions in response to a 1974 nuclear weapons test, resulting in a "go it alone" development mentality. The Indian Space Research Organisation, or ISRO, has worked to keep import costs low by designing most of the parts for its programme that are then outsourced to the domestic private sector.

at Mangalore (Karnataka) MANGALORE: Leading International Brand in education sector and international certification from International Informatics Mauritius Limited (IIML) opens its New Authorized Training Center at Mangalore (Karnataka), under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Powdhan Shetty. This center would run all international certification courses of IIML to benefit student community over there. This is informed by IIML CEO (India ) Shri Santosh Shukla Advocate. Known as Gateway of South West India is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. European influence in Mangalore can be
traced back to 1498, when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at St Mary's Island near Mangalore. In 1526, the Portuguese under the viceroyship of Lopo Vaz de Sampaio succeeded in defeating the Bangara King and his allies and conquered Mangalore. The trade passed out of Muslim hands into Portuguese hands. In the mid-16th century, Goud Saraswat Brahmins, and Goan Catholics from Goa migrated to Mangalore as a result of Goa Inquisition. On this occasion, Mr. Joseph Boston (Chairman, Africa), Mr. Anil Audit (Director, Mauritius), Mr. M. Damodar (Legal Advisor, Mauritius), Ms. Anishtha Audit (Project Head, Mauritius) and Dr. Monica Nagori (Project Head, India) congratulated Mr. Shetty and his staff.
IT, pharma industries to be key job creators in 2014: Assocham NEW DELHI: Information technology (IT), pharmaceutical, agri-based industries and banking sectors will remain the largest employment generation sectors in 2014, industry lobby Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) said in a recent report. "These sectors will stand out despite the fact that the present state of economy where in a large majority of sectors, net employment is being lost and not created does not support large scale employmen t," the study said. The report said that employmen t generation in India will benefit from economic recovery in the US. "A large number of American firms are expected to increase their IT spend as consumer sales pick up there. Over 60 per cent of the India's 75 billion software and service exports are dependent on the US market," the report said. The report further said that top end IT firms and consulting firms will remain active in campus recruitment in 2014. "Since our economy still remains a good mix of organised and unorganised, large corporates and small enterprises, a large number of people in rural India dependent on agriculture and the tertiary industries, there are inherent and inbuilt strengths which come handy when the chips are down," Rana Kapoor, president, Assocham said. The report also revealed that recruitment from the pharmaceuticals sector would remain active, though the aggregate number would be much smaller than the IT sector, followed by agro-based industries. "Agriculture sector has posted robust growth in 2013 and is likely to do so in 2014, based on better prospects for the Rabi crop. The positive spin off would be evident in a whole lot of industries which are directly linked," the report said. The report added that banking sector will be another employment generators in 2014, particularly in the public sector. "A huge number of backlog vacancies have to be filled up in the public sector banks. For the private sector, new licences likely to be given before April, will throw new opportunities," the report added.
PANAJI: The Goa industry is lobbying with the union finance ministry for a "virtual Special Economic Zone (SEZ)" status to new eco-friendly industries. A petition to Finance Secretary Sumit Bose from the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) also demands duty-free import facilities for Information Technology, Electronics and Pharmaceutical industries in Goa, where the SEZ policy had been scrapped because of popular opposition. "Units set up in SEZs enjoy benefits like duty-free import or domestic procurement of goods for development, operation and maintenance of the SEZ units," a petition signed by GCCI chairman Narayan Bandekar reads, while making a case for "virtual SEZ" status for the new industries. "Since there is opposition for setting up SEZs in Goa, we recommend that new units in Goa, especially in the IT, electronics and pharma sectors, be granted virtual SEZ status and given exemptions from Income Tax, similar to export-oriented units," the petition further says. The Goa government had scrapped the SEZ in the state in 2008, after a string of protests by civil society groups. The ostensible reason given by then chief minister Digambar Kamat for the scapping of the SEZ was the "public outcry".
