Alma Wishes You Happy New Year…! Nothing is going change, unless you initiate the change. Blaming others and blaming circumstances would not make your situation better. Daydreaming about a different life style, about a vacation, about a new car, or about a new house is not enough. Wishing you were wealthy, healthy or in love, and at the same time, at the back of your mind, not believing you will ever achieve any of these things, would only make the situation worse. According to Remes Sasson, what you feel and believe deep inside you is more powerful than all your resolutions, wishes and daydreaming. You should work on convincing yourself that these things are possible. When you are convinced you act differently. If you want to make changes in your life, they have to start right now, not in some undefined future. You are cheating and frustrating yourself when you procrastinate, when you make empty resolutions, and when you believe that if circumstances were different you would have been able to do this and that. Now, this very moment is the time to start any change, the smallest one or the biggest one. If you say, "I'll start tomorrow", you are cheating yourself, because tomorrow you will again say the same thing. There will always be another tomorrow, but no change in your life. So, what are you waiting for? Are you going to do something about your life, or just read the article and go on with your life? If you do this, tomorrow will be more or less like today, and the day after too, and so on and on. If you want to make changes in your life you need to start them now, this very moment, and not tomorrow. Alma wishes you Happy New Year.

P U N E : F i n a n c e Minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday that state-owned banks needed much more autonomy, but he stopped short of giving any details of proposed reforms. Jaitley made the comment at a twoday meeting of public sector bankers convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to suggest a roadmap for reforms. The meeting ended. "There is a need for far greater autonomy being given to them,"
Jaitley said at the meeting, which was also attended by Modi and Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan. "There are unacceptable levels of NPAs (nonperforming assets) in some cases. And the banks have to be given sufficient amount of leeway...to deal with commercial issues with a commercial mindset." State-run banks recorded the highest level of stressed loans at 12.9 percent of their advances in September last year, while the same ratio for private sector banks was at 4.4 percent, according to central bank data. Modi told the bankers there would be no interference from the government, according to a statement.

Cyber crimes in India may double in 2015: Study NEW DELHI: The number of cyber crimes in India may touch 300,000 in 2015, almost double the level of last year, causing havoc in the financial space, security establishment and social fabric, a study said. "What is causing even more concern is that the origin of these crimes is widely based abroad in countries including China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Algeria among others," D.S Rawat, secretary general, ASSOCHAM said while releasing the joint ASSOCHAM-Mahindra SSG study "Cyber and Network Security Framework". At present, the number of cyber crimes in India is nearly around 149,254 and is likely to cross the 300,000 by 2015 growing at compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 107 percent. According to the study, every month sees 12,456 cases registered in India. During 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, the total number of cyber crimes registered were 13,301, 22,060, 71,780 and 62,189 (till May) respectively, it said. Phishing attacks of online banking accounts or cloning of ATM/debit cards are common occurrences. The increasing use of
mobile/smartphones/tablets for online banking/financial transactions has also increased the vulnerabilities to a great extent. The maximum offenders came from the 18-30 age group, the report added. These attacks have been observed to be originating from the cyber space of a number of countries including the US, of Europe, Brazil, Turkey, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Algeria and the UAE, highlighted the study. "Growing internet penetration and rising popularity of online banking have made India a favourite among the cybercriminals, who target online financial transactions using malware and India ranks third after Japan and US in the tally of countries most affected by online banking malware during the year of 2014," it said. As per the study, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra have occupied the top three positions when it comes to cyber crimes registered under the new IT Act in India. Interestingly, these three states together contribute more than 70 percent to India's revenue from IT and IT related industries, it added.

New Zealand gets UNSC's non-permanent membership SECRETARY VIEW
Dr. Rajeev Shrivastav info@aiita.org WELLINGTON: New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully announced that the country has become a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC). "New Zealand's term on the Security Council will place us at the heart of international decision-making for the next two years," the minister said. "It's been 21 years since New Zealand last served on the Security Council. We are ready to serve again and to provide an independent voice at the world's top table," he added. The Security Council is at present faced with some of the most pressing issues concerning the international community, including the humanitarian situation in Syria, the Islamic State (IS) insurgency and Ebola disease, Scoop.co.nz reported. New Zealand's term on the Council runs until Dec 31, 2016. The UNSC comprises five permanent members with veto power and 10 non-permanent members, elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term each. It has primary responsibility to maintain international peace and security.

French aerospace major Thales targets Indian market for growth
KOLKATA: With opportunities opening up once again in the defence sector, French aerospace major Thales is considering joint ventures (JVs) with over 50 Indian companies to enhance its industrial footprint. "We are planning to expand locally in India through our own wholly owned subsidiary Thales India Private Limited (TIPL), JVs and all the partnerships with the local industry that can be envisaged", TIPL vice president and country director Antoine Caput told IANS. In order to expand his business and provide jobs to unemployed youth in the state, he has recently procured two acres of land which he wanted to develop as a flower farm. "There are so many places where flowers are being sold. I distribute flowers to them. I also participate in many fairs regularly. Many people also come to my place to buy flowers as they know about my nursery," said Gurumayum Nanao Sharma, a progressive farmer. Khoijupam, a staff here, said that it is very beneficial for him."Instead of doing any other work, I prefer to do floriculture as I feel good to take care of flowers. It gives me peace of mind," he added. Many people in the north-east are adopting floriculture as an alternate farming. They get encouragement by participating at various exhibitions and flower shows. Recently, a three-day long Chrysanthemum exhibition cum competition was held at the Vivekananda Park in Agartala. A total of 30 farmers and gardeners showcased over 60 varieties of Chrysanthemum at the annual colorful winter flower festival.
December factory growth at two-year high as orders surge-PMI BENGALURU: Indian manufacturing activity expanded at its fastest pace in two years in December as new orders flooded in and factories kept price increases to a minimum, a business survey showed. Strong new business reinforces Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's view that the economy will grow "much better" in 2015/16, while weaker inflation gives the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) more room to cut interest rates as expected this year. The HSBC Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by Markit, rose to 54.5 in December from 53.3, its highest since end2012 and its 14th straight month above the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction. The survey also showed input prices slumped to a near six-year low as oil prices tumbled. In November,
India's annual consumer price inflation fell to 4.38 percent, well below the 8 percent which the RBI had hoped to achieve by the end of the year and the lowest since the government started releasing the data in 2012. "With the disinflationary trend gaining ground, the RBI is expected to find space for some rate cuts in 2015," said Pranjul Bhandari, chief India economist at HSBC. A Reuters poll predicted the RBI would start cutting its key lending rate from 8 percent in the second quarter. But despite surging factory production, driven by improved business conditions and strong domestic and foreign demand, factories cut headcount at the steepest rate for nearly three years. An employment sub-index slipped to 49.6 from November's 50.2.
Beijing pollution levels fall slightly in 2014 Beijing recorded a slight drop in smog levels in 2014, the municipal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said Sunday, though some pollutants remained at 150 percent above national minimum levels. The city government has restricted coal use, shut down factories and introduced new fuel standards for cars and trucks in a bid to limit a surge in air pollution that at times has left the Chinese capital shrouded in smog. Data released showed the city is making slow progress in combating pollution, which reports say ends hundreds of thousands of lives in China prematurely every year. Average concentration of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers, known as PM2.5, fell 4 percent from 2013 to 85.9 micrograms per cubic meter, the EPA said. The national standard is 35, although the government does not expect to meet the standard until around 2030. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) levels fell 17.7 percent, nitrogen dioxide (NOx) 1.3 percent and PM10 7.1 percent, the EPA said, while dust levels rose. As a result, Beijing's 20 million denizens enjoyed 93 days with "excellent air quality" in 2014, up from 71 days in 2013, the EPA said. The city plans to cut PM2.5 levels a further 5 percent this year, and reduce SO2 and NOx emissions by 6 percent. It aims to get coal consumption levels down to 15 million tonnes this year from 19 million in 2014. It will get 200,000 old, highly polluting vehicles off the road and shut down some 300 factories, the EPA said. By 2017, Beijing hopes to get PM2.5 levels down to 60, after cutting coal consumption to less than 10 million tonnes annually. In August, the municipal government said it would phase out coal use completely by 2020.

'We have no plan B, we have to get rid of this virus' - new head of UN Ebola mission
Dr. Dilip N. Pandit editor@aiita.org
Historic Journey of New Year New Year's Day is observed on January 1, the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar used in the Roman Empire since 45 BC. Romans originally dedicated New Year's Day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings for whom the first month of the year (January) is named. Later, as a date in the Gregorian calendar of Christendom, New Year's Day liturgically marked the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, and is still observed as such in the Anglican Church and Lutheran Church. In p r e s e n t d a y, w i t h m o s t countries now using the Gregorian calendar as their de facto calendar, New Year's Day is probably the world's most celebrated public holiday, often observed with fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the New Year starts in each time zone. Mesopotamia (Iraq) created the c o n c e p t o f N e w Ye a r celebration 2000 BC. The Romans dedicated New Year's Day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings for whom the first month of the year (January) is also named. After Julius Caesar reformed the calendar in 46 BC and was subsequently murdered, the Roman Senate voted to deify him on the 1st January 42 BC in honor of his life and his institution of the new rationalized calendar. The month originally owes its name to the deity Janus, who had two faces, one looking forward and the other looking backward. This suggests that New Year's celebrations are founded on pagan traditions. Alma Times wishes you Happy New Year 2015.
The newly appointed Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, arrived this morning in Accra, Ghana, where he officially begins his duties next week as head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER). Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed will be taking over for Mr. Anthony Banbury. Speaking with UNMEER staff at a town hall meeting today, Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed praised their achievements but also noted the challenges in battling the deadly outbreak.
“This is a global crisis. We definitely have a difficult time ahead of us, but we can achieve it,” Mr. Ould Cheikh Ahmed said. “We have no plan B, we have to get rid of this virus. This is within our reach, but we should not be complacent.” According to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) figures, there are 20,206 confirmed, probable or suspected cases of Ebola and 7,905 reported deaths. “We need to keep going until we don't have even one case, because even one case is too many,” he said. “The work ahead remains very hard but we really have no other choice.” Outgoing Head Anthony Banbury welcomed Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, saying, “Even while we face a lot of hard work in the days, weeks and months ahead, it's important to pause and think back to where we were when we started. There were predictions that there would be 1.4 million cases by now.” Ould Cheikh Ahmed will be visiting Liberia and Sierra Leone next week, then Guinea shortly after, to reinforce UNMEER's strategic priorities and see first-hand the Ebola response. He will be accompanied by UN Special Envoy on Ebola, Dr. David Nabarro. According to UNMEER, the three affected countries now have sufficient capacity to isolate and treat 100 percent of confirmed Ebola patients and enough burial teams to ensure safe and dignified burials for 100 percent of all deaths due to Ebola. Before his new appointment, Ould Cheikh Ahmed served as Deputy Special Representative and Deputy Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
Medical devices sector against India slashes health budget, already 100 percent FDI in brownfield area one of the world's lowest NEW DELHI: Calling for a blanket ban on 100 percent foreign equity in brownfield projects in medical devices, the industry association Friday said the government's recent decision is in direct conflict with its Make in India programme to promote domestic manufacturing and reduce import dependency. "The Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AIMED) welcomes 100 percent FDI for medical devices as long as it's restricted for manufacturing but not for trading. It is ok for greenfield projects but should not be allowed for brownfield," it said in a letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. In a bid to encourage the domestic production of medical devices like pacemakers, nebulisers and cardiovascular stents,
the government last week de-linked it from pharmaceuticals and allowed 100 percent foreign equity under the automatic route. The present policy for pharmaceuticals permits 100 percent foreign equity under the automatic route only under some specified conditions, notably greenfield projects. Ongoing projects that may require overseas funding have conditions attached. Since the existing policy clubbed medical devices with pharma, they too were subject to conditions. Pointing out that there are hardly 50 manufacturers of medical devices in India with a turnover of over Rs. 50 crore, AIMED said: "By making 100 percent auto approval for brownfield investment, these battered surviving Indian device medical industry will get wiped out."
NEW DELHI: The government has ordered a cut of nearly 20 percent in its 2014/15 healthcare budget due to fiscal strains, putting at risk key disease control initiatives in a country whose public spending on health is already among the lowest in the world. Two health ministry officials told Reuters that more than 60 billion rupees, or $948 million, has been slashed from
their budget allocation of around $5 billion for the financial year ending on March 31. Despite rapid economic growth over the past two decades, successive governments have kept a tight rein on healthcare expenditure. India spends about 1 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on public health, compared to 3 percent in China and 8.3 percent in the United States. But hopes were high that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was elected in May, would upgrade basic health infrastructure and make medical services more affordable for the poor.
smart gadgets take center stage at CES

NATIONAL

LAS VEGAS: Imagine a world in which your garage door opens automatically as you pull into the driveway. The living room lights and heater turn on — perhaps the oven starts warming up, too. In the socalled "smart home," cars, appliances and other devices all have sensors and Internet connectivity to think and act for themselves, and make your life easier. We're not there just yet, but we're getting closer. The smart-home concept is known in tech circles as the Internet of Things. Current iterations primarily include our ability to control gadgets such as lights and security alarms or view data remotely through a smartphone app. At the International CES gadget show in Las Vegas this week, manufacturers will promote more devices and functionality. Some gadgets will be able to talk directly with one another, not just to an app. The four-day show opens to the public. The Internet of Things could mean big business for gadget makers. The Consumer Electronics Association projects sales of smart energy and security systems alone will total $574 million this year, a 23 percent increase from 2014. Although that pales by comparison to the $18 billion spent on TVs and displays, growth has been swift. In terms of people smartening up their homes in earnest, though, it will probably be another two years before devices are cheap and widespread enough for the typical consumer, says Eduardo Pinheiro, CEO of Muzzley, which makes a hub that allows devices to talk to each other. For now, the smart home is more about possibilities than practice.
