Tendulkar joins hands with UNICEF Aparna Sharma of Dublin (Ireland)
MUMBAI: Less than a fortnight after walking away from the cricket field, Sachin Tendulkar embarked on what he called a “wonderful second innings”. And after signing on as UNICEF’s regional ambassador for South Asia during a function held in Mumbai, he spoke of how close the organisation’s sanitation and hand-washing campaigns were to his heart. Tendulkar has been part of several UNICEF campaigns for a decade, including one for the TM
eradication of polio, but with cricket now part of his past, his popularity in the region made him the ideal candidate to get some crucial messages across. A media representative from Bhutan – the Maldives was also represented at the event – told that while cricket was not hugely popular in the tiny Himalayan kingdom, Tendulkar’s face and deeds were familiar to many of their citizens. “I was surprised to know that 36% of the world population don’t have access to safe and clean toilets,” said Tendulkar during his speech. “To think that this basic facility is not available to common people in today’s age is difficult to digest. For the negligence of adults, a child cannot lose its life. “1600 children die every day because of such diseases. I just want to help UNICEF make more people aware of this initiative that I am part of – it’s as simple as washing our hands with soap. “Basically, not washing your hands allows a person to carry germs back home and harms the entire family, especially if the carrier happens to be the mother, who is involved in preparing food for everyone at home. A lot of diseases are caused due to our negligence.
