Buildings in Greece have survived through time and history because they were and still are conceived to be living quarters and utility oriented structures and their characteristic made them to survive for such a long time. This pragmatism permeates the creation of structures even today. JORG “YORK” VAN DEN HOVEN FOUNDER - CEO ASIA

Jorg van den Hoven is a leading design pioneer in China since 2001. After working for his own digital design agency during his studies, for Toyota’s Advanced Technology Dept. and having serviced various clients in different industries. He started his first company in China in 2005, and quickly that resulted in the first international award winning (Dutch) product design company in South China. After, working for the Netherlands Minstry of Foreign Affairs on the Creative Industry in China he realised that the power for

innovation in China has endless potentials. During his project for the World Bank in Cambodia in 2010 he planned a new strategy for design in China. As consultant for private and government design organisations he observed the various potentials and creative improvements that would benefit both China and designers.

His strenght have always been starting up new enterprises, initiating new strategies and new inniatives. Bringing his back ground as: Industrial product

From ancient temples, through medieval churches to modern buildings, Greek architects, designers and artists have always put the human being at the center of their calculations and have always practiced the old adage: “Man is the measure of everything.” Thus everything, even huge structures like Cyclopean walls, Knossos palaces or Hagia Sofia Church, have as their measuring unit the human being: but also the human eye was and still is their vantage point as the human soul is their judge. LOW CARBON CITY PINGDI, SHENZHEN Our people have been involved in projects at different scales.

Concepts and plans at the level of urban development plans, neighborhood blocks and individual buildings belong to our repertoire. HOLISTIC URBAN PLANNING (HUP) THE DUTCH METHOD Holistic Urban Planning, or HUP, is a planning method currently being developed by the Ping-Xin-Qing project team, a multi-disciplinary consortium of Dutch specialists and institutions to achieve a progressive DutchChinese sustainable knowledge district in suburban Shenzhen.

The goal is a model that achieves integrated design for new ecocities built in environments such

as the Pearl River Delta, where urbanization is too aggressive for traditional eco-design or longterm planning methods to have a fighting chance.

HUP brings together four main components, represented the four partners leading this consortium. These can be understood as: sustainable technology and next generation infrastructures, Margot Weijnen (NGI), Collaborative Governance, Martin de Jong (TUD, HITSGS), sustainable design and planning,

tiered approach will be applied.

In a first phase, a unified theoretical model for collaboration, spatial design and business development is formulated. Based on this model a future vision for the Ping-Xin-Qing project site is generated and then tested using evolutionary planning tools such as computer aided simulation and planning in relay. FROM GENERIC TO GENETICA CASE STUDY IN EVOLUTIONARY PLANNING

By Neville Mars Does it make sense that the new ecocities heralded in Asia and the Middle-east look the same? That they are designed like any generic car city and constructed far from the rest of urban society?

Today sustainability still too often means suburbia with solar panels. Pressure in the boom economies prevents innovation to be integrated or localised. Unfortunately it is precisely here, in countries like China, that entire ecocities are built from scratch and at hyperspeed. This would offer vast opportunities for innovation, yet ironically this approach of top-down overhaul makes China’s cities intrinsically static and their design shortlived. Designed and built overnight these instant cities have trouble incorporating emerging green technologies and responding to new desires and regulations. Outdated as fast as they are erected, China’s short-term investment cycles effectively undermine the long-term visions needed to achieve sustainability.

While today’s ecocities are designed on a framework of regulations that effectively prevent the most basic sustainable concepts - like the pedestrian-friendly city - from ever truly happening.

The Dynamic City Foundation (DCF) set out to develop a planning model viable within these harsh conditions. Evolutionary Planning allows a city to respond to market needs without having to abandon its fundamental principles along the way - much like the fractal-like structure of an organically evolving city.

We aim to introduce a shift in China’s planning culture from duplication to one of adaptation; a transformation of the Generic City into the Genetic City, where sustainable qualities are ingrained in its core components from conception.

DCF applied this evolutionary planning model to an ambitious new ecocity in China. In a unique collaboration with 5 Dutch and 5 Chinese progressive design companies a long-term growth strategy for Caofeidian was developed; not by designing all at once, but in relay; each team adding to the previous proposal. The result is a simulation of thirty years of sustainable expansion: the city as the product of an accumulation of evolving ideas, able to emulate the complexity and organic logic of a slowly maturing city.

Flood Prevention The green belt and watersystem works together to create a double flood prevention system. Storm water run-off from the city is absorbed in every direction either into the green park belt or river belt. At the age of 24, in 1990 he designed his first boutique hotel ANDROMEDA ATHENS, which was among the few boutique hotels in Europe at that time.

Since 1999 he has designed the interiors of more than 40 hotels, most of which were boutique hotels. Among his projects one can find residences, condominiums, apartments, restaurants, clubs, show rooms, commercial buildings, office buildings etc.

He lives and works in Athens and he has done various projects all over Greece, as well as in Cyprus, in Turkey, in the United States of America in Manhattan and lately in Florida. He designs exteriors, interiors, gardens as well as furniture and decorative objects.

AWARDS & DISTINCTIONS His work and projects are often presented in the Greek press, as well as in the most important international magazines of interior design, fashion and life style some of in the US, England, France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Turkey, Romania, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and Russia. Each project is primarily treated as a pretext for creation and dialogue, causing “divisions”, generating solutions that combine and serve its programmatic content. Thus, a building is divided into blocks, forms, spaces, elements, uses, is deconstructed and eventually reunited, combining all the individual components to end up with a single result of solid and compact architecture.

GFRA / Architecture www.gfra.gr The office gfra architecture was founded in 2004 by Tasos Gousis, Joost Frijda and Eddie Roberts as a result of many years of cooperation in previous associations where they participated with the major Greek projects of the previous decade, such as projects for the Olympic Games, the new Athens airport and the Acropolis Museum competition. Joost Frijda is Dutch and has received his degree from the Delft University of Technology, while both Tasos Gousis and Eddie Roberts, who has a Welsh background, are graduates from the NTUA (Athens Polytechnic). Fotini Anagnostou becomes part of the team in 2007. In 2008 Nota Tsalta joins and supplements the team with the experience she gained at prominent architecture offices.

The multinational background of the team makes them search for new ideas and forms in architecture, to give a ‘European’ spirit to their design. This has been recognized by the numerous publications and participations in exhibitions such as the biennale of Young Greek Architects and the international Piranesi exhibition. At the same time they have a realistic approach and through close cooperation with the client and the consulting engineers, aim of the office is to maintain the quality of design and technology of architecture to a maximum.

The many specializations of the office include: housing, hotels, education, offices, cinema/theatre, retail, interior design, public urban/green spaces, re-use/ restoration etc. Many projects are situated in the Athens region, but work is done all over Greece and abroad. K&K Architects / Architecture www.kkarchitects.gr K&K Architects was established in 2000 by Katerina Kotzia and Korina Filoxenidou. The studio deals with a variety of projects that range from exhibition design and commercial spaces to private residential projects. Projects also include participations in competitions and research programmes on urban strategies and the integration of architecture and landscape. The studio focuses on the creation of spaces that combine a strong and clear identity with an experiential nature that encourages interaction and involvement.

In 2006 k&k architects designed and co-curated (with E. Constantopoulos and L. Papadopoulos) the Greek Participation in the 10th Biennale of Architecture in Venice entitled The Dispersed Urbanity of the Aegean Archipelago. In 2006 they curated and designed the first Architecture Biennale of Thessaloniki, entitled: Architecture and the City In Southeast Europe. Projects have been published in architectural magazines and catalogues. Their work in exhibition design and architectural competitions has received numerous distinctions.

Katerina Kotzia and Korina Filoxenidou were trained as architects at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1997) and they have both attended the postgraduate course MA Design Studies at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design (2000) as recipients of the Onassis Institute Scholarships. In 2000 they founded the architectural office k&k architects in Thessaloniki and in 2009 also in Athens.

The completion of the Benaki Museum at Pireos Street (Award, Institute of Greek Architects 2006), and the publication of a theme issue of the annual review Architecture in Greece, both in 2004, has confirmed their prominent standing among Greek architects.

Their work, featured in many exhibitions nationally and internationally, extends the tradition of regional modernism with critical attention paid not only to site and program but to the expression of broader humanist values. They affirm the role of architecture in creating the stable framework of boundaries and spatial relationships that support and make intelligible everyday public and private life, in all its richness of rhythm, movement and patterns of co-awareness.

The visual form of their buildings varies considerably, but it is always a memorable expression of the underlying spatial qualities of architecture, with equal emphasis on formal order, material texture and the quality of light. Kourkoulas is Associate Professor of Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens.

Her education in the visual arts has been enhanced by her spending 2 years as a painter and by her participation in various workshops in the broader arts’ field ( human anatomy course, sculptural casting methods’ course, etc...). She has a strong interest in eco-farming methods, landscape regeneration techniques and a passion for garden design. Her Msc studies in Energy & Environment have substantially influenced her “holistic” design approach in architecture.

Rapid prototyping and custom made computer aided machining and manufacturing are part of our design process. We are a design collective who acknowledge the ephemeral dynamic of contemporary cultural production, often involving diverse and innovative architects in each project, while composing a kind of architectural design wunderkammer. Digital craftsmanship is combined with traditional masonry, carpentry and steel works for the production of programmatically and formally intriguing space.

Simos Vamvakidis holds a BSc in civil engineering (TE) and a Diploma in architectural engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).

He was awarded the Fulbright and Mihelis scholarships prior his master’s at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA, MArchII). He has worked on the design & construction of public and private spaces and buildings and has been awarded in international architectural competitions. He has being teaching at NTUA since 2008 as lecturer “407” and as a PhD candidate, focusing on digital & parametric design and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies. He is interested in any architectural gesture that negotiates /proposes / poses questions related to the way we experience and interact with the public / private spaces and the people within them, based on today’s social, economic and cultural context. He sometimes gives in to technological experimentations that come to clad an architectural idea.

It was later renamed to “I. & A. Vikelas & Associate Architects”, when Alexios Vikelas joined the firm in 2000.

The firm has dealt with almost every subject in architecture, from interior design and private houses, to urban developments and large scale projects, such as airports, parks, museums and hotel resorts. Recently, in collaboration with the offices of Elias and Konstantinos Skroubelos – under the joint company METRON Ltd. – and MEAS Ltd. Partner Architects, the firm designed a major Olympic project, the Olympic Sailing Center.

In general, the firm has gained its reputation by the design of high-rise buildings in the seventies, shopping centers in the eighties and office buildings in the last twenty years.

Studies of private houses and residential complexes, internal spaces and shops are maybe not widely known in a total of eight hundred and more studies and constructed projects.

Tasos Zeppos was born in Zakynthos in 1951. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin in 1980 and has been a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece(TEE)since1982.
