Welcome It’s December and clearly, the year-end. But as it goes, “Every end is a new beginning”—I am looking forward to new designs, new concepts, and new energies to make the world of design and architecture more sustainable and human-centric. This is a very special issue as the last edition of 2018 acknowledges the deserving and talented frontrunners of design and architecture who’re changing the way we live and creating healthy environments with their vision and experiences. We have compiled the list of Top 30 creative designers and architects who’re influential, inspiring, and innovative. Hats off to these professionals for making designs and structures beyond our imaginations. Also, this issue covers the highlights of Dubai Design Week and Downtown Design. We’re also profiling the very talented Amjad Hourieh from 4SPACE Design as he talks about his favourite projects—Atmosfire and VR Park. My chosen one this month are the Arabic-inspired Christmas goodies from Home Centre. Happy reading and see you in 2019!

Brazil’s Children Village School wins the RIBA International Prize 2018 A new school complex on the edge of the rainforest in northern Brazil designed called Children Village by Brazilian architects—Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum have won the RIBA International Prize 2018. The RIBA International Prize is awarded every two year to a building that exemplifies design excellence and architectural ambition and delivers meaningful social impact. It is one of the world’s most rigorously judged architecture awards, with every long-listed building visited by a group of international experts. Children Village was chosen from a shortlist of four exceptional new buildings by a grand jury chaired by renowned architect Elizabeth Diller (DS+R). Children Village provides boarding accommodation for 540 children aged 13 to 18 attending the Canuanã School. Pupils come from remote areas of the country, some travelling many hours by boat. Funded by the Bradesco Foundation, Children Village is one of the 40 schools run by the foundation providing education for children in rural communities across Brazil. The architects, Gustavo Utrabo and Petro Duschenes from Aleph Zero, designed Children

Village in collaboration with Marcelo Rosenbaum and Adriana Benguela from architecture and design studio, Rosenbaum. Central to their vision for the project was the idea of architecture as a tool for social transformation. The architects worked closely with the children to identify their needs and desires for their school. They wanted to create an environment that could be a home away from home, where children could develop a strong sense of both individuality and belonging. Replacing dormitories for 40 students, the new design provides rooms for six children in a more intimate environment. Covering an area of almost 25,000sqm, Children Village is organised into two identical complexes: one for girls and one for boys. Residences are centred around three large, open and well-shaded courtyards at ground level, where the dormitory accommodation is located. On the first floor, there are a number of flexible communal spaces, ranging from reading spaces and television rooms to balconies and hammocks, where the children can relax and play.

Presentation by Kohler during Dubai Design Week

Kohler celebrated innovation at Dubai Design Week Kohler hosted three innovation and designfocussed events: Kohler Chit Chat “Wanderlust” event, Design Forum on “ALL THINGS CONNECTED”, and WasteLAB at Dubai Design Week last month. At this informal forum called Kohler Chit Chat “Wanderlust’’, architects and designers were called upon to share their innovative experiences. It featured four distinct speakers: Nasser Turk, regional manager MEA, Watg and Wimberly Interiors, Omar Abdelghafour, founder of Light Space Design, Roy Posey, head of design, Keane, and Frederico Cruz, project designer of Wilson Associates. The Design Forum on “ALL THINGS CONNECTED” provided a platform for the architecture and design industry to join in the discussion of shaping the future of the global

industry through the exchange of experiences, insights and ideas. The forum consisted of insightful presentations, discussions, and panels by industry leaders on trending themes and topics, and offered opportunities for architects and designers to inspire and be inspired. “The future of architecture and design is being informed by today’s events, and it is crucial for the talented and aspirational voices within this industry to rise above and give shape to what we will see in 10 or 15 years,” said Larry Yuen, Kohler Co. Kitchen and Bath Group President. Lastly, Kohler WasteLAB explored new uses for industrial wastes in a workshop, “Nothing Into Something”. During the forum, Kohler looked at wastes differently to see it as an input or raw material for another process or product.

The idea for the WasteLAB originated in 2013 at the company’s annual innovation for Good retreat. A group of Kohler associates studied nature’s ability to break down and reuse byproducts within an ecosystem lifecycle and reconsidered how this model might work within an industrial manufacturing system to use waste as an ingredient in new products.

5 PALLAVI DEAN

Bold use of colours at Sherra Entrepreneurship Centre in Sharjah

Founder and Creative Director Roar Pallavi Dean is the founder and creative force behind design firm, 'Roar'. The firm has an international portfolio spanning across three continents; her flagship projects include the Delano Dubai, Paramount Residences, Edelman HQ, and many more. An architect and sustainability specialist, Dean was born in India, raised in Dubai, and spent early years of her career in London. Her designs reflect the eclectic influences of these places, which helps her in understanding various cultures and hence delivering a various range of projects. Dean is also a professor of design theory at the American University of Sharjah. Her recent project — Sherra Entrepreneurship Centre in Sharjah is worth all the attention. Sheraa means ‘sail’ in Arabic, Dean wanted to develop a space around the idea of the entrepreneur’s journey. The requirement was to create a functional space that is flexible, accommodates a broad range of work scenarios, and can host a vast spectrum of meetings, from large ‘town hall’ presentations for a hundred people, to private negotiations on contracts with lawyers and bankers. Here are some very interesting design highlights of this space like a green wall in the reception area, which sets the tone for biophilia. The blue reflective circular discs suspended from the ceiling were used as a simple trick to conceal the ugly AC units, but they’ve become so much more

26 |

December 2018

than that. The reflective film on the discs frames vignettes of the open plan space and gives users snapshots on what is happening in other areas of the hub. They are also angled to catch the daylight at different times and bring some colour into space. The Bene PIXEL boxes are used in the premises that truly epitomise the flexibility of Sheraa. These ingenious little boxes can be combined to create different pieces of furniture - storage containers, seating, and tables. One can even sometimes stack them to create a mini amphitheatre. Dean deliberately went for a bold variety of seating: they’re comfortable and practical, but most importantly they add layers of personality and character with their different textures, forms, and

colours. Tarkett flooring is used across the area as it’s acoustic and durable, which is a must for a hightraffic space with an exposed ceiling.

CURRENT PROJECTS Dean is working on some of the prominent projects such as luxury residences in Kuwait and London, large commercial towers in Sharjah, a jazz bar in Dubai, a boutique store in Abu Dhabi, and a few F&B outlets in Saudi Arabia.

Designs driven by

innovation! In conversation with Amjad Hourieh, managing partner and project director at 4SPACE Design, on how technology is changing the world of design and shares a few of his favourite projects

December 2018

Tell us something about professional journey so far?

your

With over 20 years of experience in the industry, I am a fully accredited SBID (Society of British and International Design) professional. In 2012, I cofounded 4SPACE Design with my partner Firas Alsahin, where we usually work with property developers, corporates, and end-user clients. I supervise the projects from start to finish. I am very interested in technology and doing innovative things. I aim to create a unified seamless experience between clients and their vision.

Your projects cover a wide range of areas, what typology gives you the most pleasure to design? For me, to be able to design appropriately and suitably, I have to fall in love with every project. We are doing a variety of projects and each project has a very different skill-set but generally, we love to work with design passionate people that live and breathe design and love the journey from beginning to the end. Interior design captures many art forms. Space comes in different shapes and I don’t want to set limits for myself because it’s a wonderful journey to create space.

What kind of challenges do you face in this field? Every day is a new challenge and every day is a new learning. Passion for me is a necessity. As long we work as a team with the same vision, the challenges get easier.

Are you seeing any particular style requests trending amongst your clients? Most of our clients have bare vision on how they want their restaurants/residences/retail shops would look like. Some would tend to look at social media websites and collect photos. But recently, we noticed that clients want to play with lights. They want to incorporate the technology of future into the overall look of the design. The concept is minimalist but the sophisticated lighting will definitely create a story. It is where the design and technology meets. Same with Visual Reality (VR), clients would prefer to see their visions of the space on the VR than the printed 3D images that are normally presented.

What kind of changes and trends you would like to see more in this region? Like any other trend, interior design trends evolve organically and tend to follow patterns. I love a lot of design movements. But art deco with its curves,

BLENDING TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN; Amjad Hourieh geometry, and unexpected drama is one of my favourites. Hourieh’s interest in innovation and technology has helped in the success of his latest projects—VR Park and Atmosfire restaurant. Here’s how Hourieh along with his team executed these award-winning ventures.

Hourieh shares exciting details about his mostloved projects:

VR PARK, Dubai Mall What: The VR Park at Dubai Mall is a 6,100sqm area designed to challenge the reality and let visitors experience an extreme level of VR. Emaar Entertainment wanted to build a new attraction

The entrance is inspired by the portals tubes which are seen in sci-fi movies

The concept is minimalist but the sophisticated lighting will definitely create a story. – Amjad Hourieh on upcoming trends that was never implemented in Dubai before. 4SPACE Design designed the whole interior as an upside-down city with reflective blue epoxy flooring that plicates the Dubai night sky. The infrastructure of Dubai Downtown is projected as a video mapping on the ceiling by covering the entire ceiling structure with a special canvas. Design: The design concept is very challenging, yet we believed that this would be the seed for the upcoming trend. The Facade is the most important area of any theme park, thus, we were prudent designing the entrance façade. We wanted to surprise the visitors and make them curious at the same time by just looking at the entrance. So, a huge 90° curved LED display screen panel along with complete cityscape buildings of Dubai downtown bent upside down was designed to tell the people about the magnificent experience they will go through once inside. The giant LED screen is showcasing the day and night of Dubai downtown with interesting animations. The entrance is inspired by the portals tubes that can be seen sci-fi movies. The focal point of the entire theme park interior is the giant model of Burj Khalifa hanging upside down from the top ceiling till the floor. We started the initial concept sketch with the upside down Burj Khalifa and this was the most

thought-provoking part of the entire project. We collaborated with the theming company to get the proper proportion, finishes, look, and feel of actual Burj Khalifa.

Atmosfire, Jumeirah Beach Road What: Atmosfire is a 5,500sqft restaurant with an innovative barbeque and open fire pit concept where everything is done in front of the customer. Guests can experience the finest meats butchered and aged onsite and then grilled and roasted to perfection. Design: As you enter, you will be stunned by the massive brick hood in the centre that serves as the focal point of the entire space. With its striking open fire pit, guests will feel that they are as much a part of the action as the chef creates a spectacle for the eyes and a feast for the taste buds. Terrazzo was used on most of the spaces —floor, walls, tables, and countertops. On the mezzanine floor, you will be surprised by the details of the upholstery, joinery, and finishes that are punctuated by perfect lightings. Materials were used in a creative way with curative viewpoints at every turn. In the central pit area, a rotating chair was designed to provide a superb comfort while adoring a diverse theatrical display of meats and grills from around the world.

There were many amazing stalls at the Downtown Design, which were crowd pullers for sure. One such innovative installation was by Preciosa’s Breath of Light. It’s a playful and interactive installation made from a series of opal crystal bubbles that dissolve into crystal frosted, crystal clear, and crystal bubbled bubbles. The bubbles create an intriguing path of light as visitors contribute their breaths. Martin Fryzelka, managing director, Preciosa, said: “We are fortunate that we are working on some of the prominent projects in the region. We are finalising iconic projects like Mandarin Oriental in Jumeirah and one on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi. Our vision is to make installation, which connects the space and human element together. We are cultivating the chandeliers since 1724, we started with historical designs to contemporary styles, and

now interactive installations, we are continuously pushing the boundaries of the industry to bring the value to our customers.” Another interesting brand at Downtown Design was Emotional Objects. Their products are designed and manufactured with the sole purpose of making a connection with humans. On display were exciting range of products from coffee table, consoles, speakers, mirrors, and many more. Joao Faria, founder and architect, Emotional Objects, said: “We try to merge art and furniture and we want to conquer Dubai and neighbouring areas. Middle East is an important area for our brand and we want to establish our base slowly and steadily. People choose our brand for unique pieces and Dubai is a flourishing market and we have great connections here.” In terms of sanitary, bathroom, and fittings,

a hub for designers, architects, and developers. So, that’s why it’s a very important market for us. We are displaying various options within the Smart Toilets category, which stands out for their design, technology, innovation and sustainability and are presenting for the first time the new Carmen collection, which includes vintage-styled vitreous china, faucets and bathroom furniture, combining the best of the past and the present. In terms of projects, we’re doing Opera Grand, and are delivering our products to more than 1000 villas in Abu Dhabi.” Clearly, both Dubai Design Week and Downtown Design brought together products, people, and projects, which had one thing in common—‘innovative design’, which is everlasting and impacting.

SUPPLIER FOCUS

urban designs! Catering to the need of

Janaika Elders, founder of Urban Nest, talks about her latest collaborations with Dutch and Latin designers and future plans

52 |

December 2018

www.design-middleeast.com

How do you have a competitive edge over other brands in your field? We speak the language of our target audience. We highly value a personal approach and listen carefully to our clients. Our brand provides a unique and surprisingly affordable collection. Our products are exclusively curated by reputed Dutch and Latin American design labels and designers.

Janaika Elders

Who are your biggest clients in the region? We are getting more and more demands to support commercial projects, with known interior designers and design firms. We are proud of our collaboration with Dutch spatial designer Maja Kozel on several projects like Pastrology, EPA in Sharjah, and the Altitude Gym (together with IMB Creative Studio), which will be opening later this year. One exciting project that we can’t wait to open is The London Project on Bluewater Island in which we supplied the requests of Design Studio Yamjam. In the retail sector, we are happy with clients like Comptoir 102 in Jumeirah.

Could you tell us more about your latest launches? Recently we launched WIJCK; a graphical wall-art with prints from several Dubai

neighbourhoods. We are always on the lookout for new and fresh designers to collaborate with. We had some successful meetings at Maison et Objet fair in Paris, so are expecting to work some new Dutch designers for unique furniture and lighting soon. We are also close to launching some ‘new bohemian’ Peruvian design brands.

What is your biggest challenge at the moment? Our biggest challenge is to always stay up-to-date with the latest trends and offer the right collection to cater to all the requirements of different boutique projects. To ensure that we are on trend, I travel to all the international trade shows like the Ambiente in Germany, Maison & Objet in Paris, and Perumoda in Lima. Luckily, Dutch designs are known for being innovative, so I also visit the local Dutch fairs such

as ShowUP to see what is happening in the design scene there.

What are your expansion plans? Besides growing a bigger collection with Dutch and Latin American interior design, we also are on the lookout for more project opportunities. With the Expo 2020 around the corner and the growing number of boutique projects for restaurants, offices, and the hotel industry coming up, we do expect opportunities in this region. We are also moving towards becoming an agency more than a concept store, with more brands, a bigger portfolio, and exclusive brand deals in the region. In this region, we are planning to expand throughout the Middle East. With requests from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Levant we are on the right track!

PICK OF THE MONTH

Crystal Chic Designed by Rita Kettaneh, Crystal Tables were exhibited this year in Como, Italy at the Museum of Outstanding Design, in Beirut during the Beirut Design Week, in Berlin during the Berlin Design Week, and recently at the Downtown Design during the Dubai Design Week. These tables recently won the A' Design Award in Italy. The Crystal Tables are a family of side tables inspired by the crystal's transparency, purity, and geometry. Each table has a geometric identity revealed in its flat face like a crystal. This identity influences the entire shape of the table and is expressed in the various silhouettes. Arranged side-by-side, similar Crystal Tables grow to form a larger crystal of the same shape. These chairs come in three shapes – square, triangle, and diamond and are available in a variety of colours and finishes. Price: AED1,285 onwards Availability: O'De Rose, 999 Al Wasl Road, Dubai
