Our first issue of 2021 is apt to kick-start this New Year, as it gives the glimpses of the Design Middle Awards 2020. It was a starry starry night, where the industry came together, celebrated, and recognised the achievers of the industry. Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ) has recently completed the new Sports & Performing Arts Centre of Excellence (The SPACE) for the Dubai College. The allnew SPACE is the most ambitious project of the planned upgrade of the school to date. It is located on a condensed part of the site at the back of the campus and required the demolition of the existing swimming pool and sports hall to free up valuable land for the new 5,500sqm development. From the outset the 900sqm multi-purpose gym with indoor running track was designed to be a central hub

within the SPACE and it occupies most of the ground floor. It is supplemented by a number of flexible student spaces to foster a relationship between the physical movement and the science behind it allowing teachers to combine the practical with the theory. Also on the ground floor is a new swimming facility which can be directly accessed from the outside without the need to go through the sports hall. It includes a 300 seat spectator viewing area, electronic touch timing system making it ideal for galas and other water sports events.
On the first floor, the 1,100sqm sports hall is designed for two basketball and two netball courts with retractable bleacher-style seating for around 500 spectators. The performing arts was also a key consideration for SPACE with the creation of a black box drama performance space with seating for 140, drama rooms, music classrooms as well as music practice areas. A rooftop MUGA court and student cafĂŠ have also been incorporated as well as a unique hall of fame showcasing the achievements of the school.

This visit came as part of the vital role played by Dubai Culture as the custodian of the cultural sector in the emirate. It also forms part of the priorities of the Authority’s updated strategy that is aimed at empowering creativity and innovators and enhancing the creative economy in the emirate as well as at consolidating Dubai’s position as a global centre for art and culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.

IDEAL STANDARD INTRODUCES EXTRA BASINS AS A PART OF THE ATELIER COLLECTION Ideal Standard introduces the new range of EXTRA basins to the market, adding the finesse and class to bathroom interiors. Extra Basins is a part of the Atelier collections designed by world-renowned Italian Design studio Palomba Serafini Associati. Architect and designer Roberto Palomba, is the creative brain behind the Extra basins range, combining geometric shapes with ceramic to create an elegant synergy between design and form. The square, hollow inside volume is defined by the ceramic material that allows light and shadow to refract their charm on the object. Extra basins have extremely thin profiles to minimise their presence, to allow the expressive force of the geometry that designs them to be appreciated. Conceived as a sculpture, the washbasins of the Extra collection resemble boxes to be placed on a shelf or hung on the wall and have variable sizes to create different solutions and engage in a dialogue with the space that hosts them. The EXTRA collection, with its architectural and timeless vision, satisfies the needs of the most demanding designers, allowing to conceive the bathroom with a total look approach. with state-of-the-art facilities and excellent infrastructure. Colors inspired by the Dubai desert add a local touch where light sand and orange hues connect with biophilic elements. A naturally lit reception sports a focal wall inspired by the UAE sand dunes, sweeping from the point of entry across to the glazing facade. The Julius Baer Art collection featuring artworks of contemporary Swiss artists adorn the walls across the two floors, realizing an elegant space able to withstand the test of time. Besides work desks allowing for healthy alternation between seated and standing activities, provision of quiet rooms (i.e. ‘phone booths’) are placed enabling colleagues to quietly talk to clients while enjoying the facilities of an open office. A large pantry also serves as the heart of social interaction for employees. Swiss Bureau Interior Design collaborated with leading Swiss wealth management group, Julius Baer, to design its new corporate office in Dubai. As the firm enters a new chapter in the UAE with its move to ICD Brookfield in DIFC, Swiss Bureau worked with the Julius Baer’s global architecture concept as its framework to help maintain uniformity across locations. The new premises intend to provide greater interaction space and promote employee well-being while offering unrivalled views of the DIFC and Downtown Dubai. OK Design creates an office in Israel inspired by a ski resort PHOTO CREDIT AMIT GERON
I
magine entering an office in the Middle East and feeling like you’re in a European ski resort. SkiDeal is a prominent Israeli tourism company specialising in full-package ski vacations in prime European resorts. The company’s offices are located in the heart of Israel, in the “Ir Yamim” towers in Netanya, Israel. OK Design took the inspiration for the 350sqm office design is derived entirely from the world of skiing, including materials, colors, ambiance, and experiential elements. The objective was to design a ski environment within the office space that sits in complete contrast to the dry desert climate of its Israeli surroundings, presenting an alternative reality to the outside world. The primary focus of the project was to create an environment where employees and customers would genuinely feel as if they were entering a ski resort. While many design projects incorporate surrounding landscapes as a complement, the SkiDeal office’s proximity to the Mediterranean Sea presented views that stood in contrast to the theme of the space. The design’s authenticity was key to achieving the client’s goal of motivating employees, given that they are skiing afficionados. Skiing is a significant aspect of their lives, and the

goal was to provide them with a work environment that, while functional and departmental, would also echo their passion. “In addition to the main concept of creating a ski environment, we were very cognoscente of the fact that this is a functional office, so our approach also focused on noise reduction that facilitates the transition,” says designer Keren Offner. “In terms of ambiance, our choice of materials and colors serve to transition people to the skiing world.”

Warm lighting throughout the space creates a cozy environment, while a combined lighting/acoustic solution implemented in the sales area conjures up hints of mountain views upon approach.

One of the challenges to the overall design was balancing the intimacy of the environment with the concept of an open office space. The solution came in the form of glass walls with pinewood frames, and office divisions that pass through drywall openings. Upon entering the office’s main glass door, visitors are greeted by a wide reception desk and seating area. Behind the reception desk, a wall cupboard rotates into the space, transforming into an après ski open bar, complete with a large iron library. A pinewood harmonica window separates the bar from a large adjacent conference room. When opened, the window connects the bar with the conference room to create a larger open space. The conference room also serves as a sort of courtyard area, where conference calls are held with various ski resorts and big screen TVs broadcast skiing events from around the world. The secret to creating the core transition was the abundant use of three-ply

Design challenges, 2020 was a year of iconic projects for Design Infinity
L
ast year was a challenging one due to the COVID-19 crises, it forced people to accept to the new realities of life, and it was amazing to see how the world adapted so well to the new norms and came out stronger. One of the leading fit-out companies in the region, Design Infinity, took this opportunity to introspect and a multi-level reflection on values, beliefs, and leadership that is needed in the future. This assessment along with stringent safety measures and focus on digitisation led to a year full of iconic projects for Design Infinity. From hospitality to commercial, the company has a list of exemplary projects in its portfolio in varied sectors for 2020. Here are three commissions by Design Infinity that are worth all attention:

Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP) Design Infinity recently completed fit-out works for Sharjah Research Technology & Innovation Park (SRTIP). The Project spanning nine months covers a 130,000sqft four-storey building. The project comprises RTI office, common areas, auditorium, seminar halls, dedicated exhibition space, multi-purpose hall, gymnasium, and 32 offices including 18 meeting rooms. One of the unique elements in the fit-out works for this project is the cloud installation, which is one of the biggest installations of stretch ceilings/ fabric in the UAE. Aligning the support cables was a big challenge as the final elements were to be fixed nearly 2030m below the support structure. The total weight of the 'cloud' is 1,182kg. The LED lights used in the project stretch up to 375m in length and 520sqm of stretched fabric was used in the installation. The second unique element is the atriums' 3D bench. The domes within the atriums have been designed with gypsum, acoustic ceiling, and metal works at a height of 30m while maintaining health and safety standard with no lost-time injury (LTIs). All the metal meshworks within the dome were carried out in the company’s in-house metal and glass factory in Dubai.

flooring. There is an indoor climbing wall scaling up from the 1st floor to the 3rd floor to encourage fitness at work. There is also a modern, sleek design complete with LED lights that lend the office a futuristic, avant-garde look. There is an array of places to work, including tiered seating, acoustic booths and lounge area. The entrance has a ‘wow’ factor reception, with an artificial biophilic wall and branding. The main challenge of this project was the strict timeline; the project had to be completed in 90 days. Design Infinity’s track record for on-time completions was maintained, despite several structural major approvals that could have hastened the pace of the project. Another challenge was the use of different materials to create an exceptional co-working space. Design Infinity custom made all the metal and woodworks, acoustic elements and other materials in their joinery factory in DIP.

DTEC is another magnificent project completed on time by Design Infinity. The total size of the project is 67,039sqft. The office is spread across four floors at Dubai Digital Park, Dubai Silicon Oasis. The project is a co-working space with flexible desks, multi-purpose discussion rooms and collaborative areas to foster creativity for entrepreneurs. The recreational aspects, including an indoor slide from 3rd floor to 2nd floor, the climbing wall and a 100m indoor jogging track on the 2nd floor, are engaging, and playful elements like the indoor slide are incorporated to promote positivity, productivity, and emotional well-being. The olive trees, plants and greenery at various coworking zones bring nature indoors and the overall fit-out encompasses the colours from the DTEC logo. The whole working environment in the DTEC Project is energised with the use of vibrant colours in the furniture, ceiling, and

Zayed University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre Another iconic project recently completed by Design Infinity is Zayed University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre. The total size of the project is 47,361sqft. The project has very interesting interior elements. There were lot of interior elements that Design Infinity amended with the design, to achieve best results. The main challenge of the project was working at a 16m height with scaffolding throughout the project to complete all the MEP services and structural works, without interrupting other activities. Some
of the striking elements include metal and woodworks which were all undertaken in the company’s joinery factory in Dubai. The entire project uses acoustic elements in its fit-out works- acoustic ceiling, acoustic interlay carpets, acoustic lights, sound-absorbing panels, 3D mesh etc. Design Infinity earlier announced the achievement of 100,000 safe man-hours without any LTI (lost time injury) in the Zayed University Project. The company exceeded the safety standards with the completion of this reputed project.

The City Gateways site is located on the Eastern edge of Abu Dhabi Island with Zayed Bridge to the North, Maqta Bridge to the South, the connecting road between the E10 and E20 to the West, and 400m long coast edge to the East. Learning from the PAST
Finding solutions to the PRESENT
Aedas feels that it’s designers' responsibility to help the society not only to construct, but to reconnect with history. Designers should not be afraid to do projects that evoke these feelings without being pastiche, rather trying to really understand the DNA of a place and time. The masterplan project for Makkah is an example of how we believe architectural practices should deal with the history of a place. With very little documentation of the site we did an extensive research to better understand the built environment through studying the written descriptions, graphic representations of the city, and the experience seen through old photographs.
Aedas aims to create pioneering architectural solutions that work aesthetically, economically, and practically. It is important for our designs to encompass both the social and environmental aspects. AEDAS The ENOC station facilities include fossil fuels filling station, a Zoom branded convenience store, a multi-service facility comprising car wash, quick lube, and tyre shop, drive through FSUs (Fast Food Service Units), staff restroom, plant room for water tanks and pumps for domestic water supply and fire-fighting, sub-station & LV room building, a dedicated standalone electric charging station with canopy/shading, etc. The design incorporates LCD screens which could provide information on the petrol stations sustainability successes and could also be used alongside number plate or Salik readers to provide personalised data to customers on their journey and car efficiencies. Also, these screens could provide personalised on-site marketing promotions such as advising customers how long they have been driving and that they require a break in the cafe, to continue their journey safely. The event plot area is 5,800sqm and the legacy plot area will expand to 7,100sqm.

Bull & Bear | LW Whether people are looking for a place to unwind after a long day of work or are on a business lunch, Bull & Bear caters to all. With the original Bull & Bear being at the infamous Wall Street, LW thought of giving the restaurant an “evolved banker” look that was more in line with its roots. Since it’s located in the Dubai International Financial District, a redefined concept made all the more sense. Moreover, designers at LW wanted to bring something unique to the district – something sophisticated yet inviting. So, to develop a curated space like that, LW settled on a mixture of raw and refined material to strike that perfect balance. Throughout the project, on-site coordination was essential since a bulk of the material was coming in from across the globe. The project aim was to create a five-star resort at the Northern Islands of Hurghada region known as Tawila Island, setting a benchmark project in the region. The resort provides 120 keys with a mix of inland and overwater bungalows, all-dining, one signature speciality restaurant, pools (adults, kids), kids club, gym, spa, private beaches, pool bar, retail and event spaces. The main arrival building features a 35mhigh structure partially covered by a locally sourced thatch material, marking the guest’s arrival. A building that intends to be a contemporary reassemble of the Egyptian pyramids in a non-literal approach.

PAUL BISHOP Bishop Design Paul Bishop was crowned as the Interior Designer of the Year at Design Middle East Awards 2020. Bishop became fascinated by fashion and theatre during his academic years, only having discovered interiors when attending Kingston University. Interior design was just making its break-through with not many dabbling in the sector at the time. Bishop became infatuated with the process and as such begun his love affair with interiors and design. Within the following academic years, Bishop was fortunate enough to achieve his master’s degree in Interior Architecture from Manchester University,
United Kingdom and two bachelors; one in Interior Design from Kingston University, United Kingdom and the other in Furniture and Product Design from Brighton School of Art, United Kingdom. An opportunity arose for Paul to move to Dubai in 1996. After honing his skills as a designer for eight years, Bishop Design LLC was born. Since 2004, the firm has been fortunate enough to build a reputation as one of the most reputable design agencies across the Middle East with over ninety regional and international awards.

ward-winning architecture practice, External Reference, founded by Carmelo Zappulla, designs the new store in Dubai of the premium sneaker and streetwear consignment boutique Presentedby at Level Shoes in The Dubai Mall. “The world of retail needs a revolution and with Presentedby we had the chance to boost a new creative vision all around the world. When we designed the Dubai store, we knew that we weren’t just designing another store. We were creating a concept without precedents: a concentrate of innovation where art and design produce the next destiny of the sneaker community,” said the architect, Carmelo Zappulla. The new store is conceived more as an experiential space rather than a shop, being unique in the world of retail and featuring the latest 3D printing fabrication and audiovisual technologies. It is conceived as an interactive exhibition space where digital dimension informs the physical and vice-versa. Even before going in, the customer is captured by a double funnel-shaped entrance covered with screens that use outstanding projections images starting right away the fully immersive experience. The 3D printed lattice walls, with their sinuous shapes, are inspired by the technologies and 3D parameters used by all fashion brands to produce sneakers nowadays. A recurring feature of the Presentedby stores is to display the sneakers diagonally, thus

having a complete view of the collections from multiple points of view. These wall also features impressive projections that can be programmed to be on and off when needed. The shop, conceived as one space, has three different areas: the cashdesk area, with the counter and illuminated lockers behind; the semi-circular apparel area, with the streetwear, accessories, fitting rooms and a claw machine; the experience room. At the center of the space the ultimate experience capsule displays, in the first part, a collection of the most exclusive trainers, a sort of mini sneakers museum. The second part of the experience room performs a spectacular holographic and projections show giving the room an idea of infinite space. Talking about sneakers, this future cannot be better addressed by the latest 3D technol-
ogies applied to design and manufacturing. De facto, both mainstream and emergent sneakers’ brands are experimenting with 3D printing by producing midsole, textile or customising components Clean the air with the design External Reference used cutting-edge computational tools, to design a space wrapped in a lattice structure that integrates the sneakers exhibition. This lattice is 3D printed using an advanced polymer integrating wearepure, a 100% natural mineral compound, with the property to mineralize primary greenhouse gases (CO2 and NOx) and reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The use of this material permits the new space to reduce the contaminated air behaving like a small forest. The Dubai store absorbs 38kg’s of CO2 per year.

BRINGING TECH TO THE TABLE How food & beverage and hygiene technologies can help accelerate change while retaining a positive customer dining experience
I
t’s evident that COVID-19 has an enormous impact on the food & beverage industry. F&B investors and operators around the world were forced to close down for weeks - if not months - only to be faced with long lists of precautionary measures to implement when they were ready to reopen as lockdown restrictions eased, to safeguard the health and safety of their diners. These new precautions touched every aspect of their operations, from seating arrangements to enable social distancing, mandatory temperature checks and increased cleaning and sanitisation protocols, to digital menus, contact tracing capabilities and employee PPE equipment, and PCR testing. Operating a restaurant in this new normal is unfortunately far from normal, at least for now, but even when a vaccine becomes available one thing

is clear; the F&B sector will need to evolve quickly and effectively to ensure its long-term growth and sustainability. Over the past few months, we have come together as a collective of consultants in the UAE to look at learnings from this global pandemic to develop ‘future proof’ recommendations and solutions that address not only the current backto-business requirements, but also the changes needed in the design and best practices for future F&B developments to be prepared for other health crises that may test the F&B industry. In doing so, we looked at critical areas such as design and material specifications, front-of-house flows and spacing, back-of-house design and functionality, as well as hygiene and cleaning protocols. One element that’s at the core of effective redesign and enhanced F&B operations is technology.

TECH IN THE WORKPLACE
These are all examples of visible, front-of-house technologies, but the use of tech also plays an important role in back-of-house operations to ensure kitchens are equipped to plan, manage and monitor the stringent requirements they need to comply with. Incorporating technology to control hygiene and food safety inside kitchens is a big step forward towards a safer F&B environment. Monitoring is often the most challenging aspect of this in F&B as it demands trained and dedicated personnel available in all areas of a facility at all times, but companies like Jolt, I-Auditor and MeazureUp offer a wide range of digital solutions in this space. It can also be made easier by using technology that identifies malpractices around the workplace. Artificial Intelligence is now being introduced in software to identify individuals that are not following hygiene guidelines, to measure physical distancing and to calculate how often staff members wash their hands-on a given day. This data can be used to rectify problems and retrain personnel to optimise food safety. With technology advancing at an exponential rate, it can play a much larger functional role in F&B, and as the demand for innovation grows, companies will invest in R&D hence new solutions will emerge. It will neither be easy or quick though and the development of effective solutions will demand hard work, careful thought, substantial investment, sufficient time and rewriting of the rule book in many cases. It will require the collaboration of owners, consultants, contractors, suppliers and even customers, to chart a path that meets the needs of all. Over time, confidence in the market will be restored, customers will return, and the sector will rebound. As with everything in hospitality, however, it is important to strike a balance between the maximum utilisation of technology and retaining the benefits of human interaction.

Contactless technology has become a top priority in hospitality as a way to regain consumer confidence. If we look at a diner’s journey, technology can be used at most touchpoints; from thermal imaging cameras, bio sensors to detect airborne pathogens and digital wayfinding, menus and cashless payments, to automated handwashing stations and sanitization tunnels, restaurants can bring tech to the table to take an important leap forward in providing a healthy and safe environment while retaining a positive customer dining experience. As COVID-19 appeared, so did many technology companies with new software that can help manage a business safely and efficiently according to local guidelines. Some of this technology has been around for years, like cashless payment systems, but their importance has come to the forefront during the pandemic. More and more restaurants are now deploying cashless payments, which are typically available in three formats: RFID technology, mobile payments and credit cards. Digital ordering systems using QR codes are also becoming increasingly common in both casual and upmarket dining outlets. Admittedly, this may not be suitable for every type of restaurant, but we see it becoming the norm even in the finer dining establishments. What’s interesting here is that the dining experience can be enhanced, even with less human interaction, with the advantage of cutting down on order taking time as guests can place their kitchen

HempFlax, Europe’s largest independent hemp grower and processor, is delighted to have contributed to the production of a fully recyclable, carbon-negative range of ‘Hemp’ office and home chairs, manufactured by VepaDrentea, a furniture manufacturer based in Drenthe, the Netherlands. In a world-first, VepaDrentea’s range of ‘Hemp’ chairs were developed by combining HempFlax’s high-quality1, natural industrial hemp fibres with a biological resin, both of which are plant-based and fully biodegradable and recyclable. Hemp fibre is the strongest natural fibre in the world and, when pressed into non-woven fabric mats and combined with binding agents, can be used to produce extremely strong, durable ‘shells’ suitable for a range of industrial applications. VepaDrentea recognised these qualities and chose HempFlax non-woven fabrics as a raw material to make the seat shell for its ‘Hemp’ chair collection. The hemp is treated with a biological resin, made from plant-based materials including sugar-beet residues, which acts as a binding agent, organically glueing the materials together. The resulting novel biomaterial, which is moulded into a seat shell, has been expertly developed by Plantics, an innovative bioplastics developer, and is patented worldwide.
