Welcome As Steve Jobs once quoted: “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” Pretty deep but the fact is that a good design works and works for the betterment and wellness of the occupants. After writing about design for quite a while now and meeting some influential industry experts, I got all inspired and wanted to bring some design changes that cheers me up instantly. I decided to give a makeover to the cluttered and unutilised part of my living space, and that’s my humble balcony. Now recently, I have added some green creepers and a few manageable plants and honestly, this works. This little area has become my favourite and it makes me happy. Clearly, the design has its own way of cheering you up. Another exciting event in my life is that we’ re inching towards our second edition of the Design Forum on March 20, 2019, at Fairmont The Palm. In case, you have not registered, please visit our website and reserve your seat. The March edition covers various aspects of design: On the cover, we have Samer Al Isis from Poltrona Frau Group ME, as he shares his vision for the high-end luxury brand and how he wants it to be the first choice of people in the region. In this issue, we are also presenting the ‘Top fit-out firms’ in the region, who’re contributing to the success of the design industry. Moving on to the feature of this month, it decodes the importance of workspace innovation and highlights the kind of offices we should have. This time, I have all my eyes on this beautiful basin designed by Zaha Hadid Design for Spanish brand PORCELANOSA. The brand recently, launched its first showroom in Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Spanish Pavilion will create multi-purpose spaces The Spanish Pavilion will feature various multipurpose spaces that visitors can use to explore, sit, read, congregate or even rest. They will function like small urban squares with catering services and shops, where people can spend time and enjoy the amenities. The exhibition area for Expo 2020 is designed to be a basement space, which will make use of the thermal and acoustic insulation that being underground provides. Both the open public spaces and the exhibition area will be connected via a large space where waiting will become part of entertainment. The intention is to bring visitors together in a surprising, dynamic, and collaborative experience, to enjoy creative, scientific, technological, educational, artistic, and philosophical projects, all with a Spanish flair that will serve both as a model and an inspiration. The Spanish Pavilion will help to raise awareness about and encourage, greater efficiency, energy saving, and resource management. It will not simply be an efficient building, it will be constructed with sustainable materials that will be showcased to the pavilion’s visitors and other users. The construction

materials will include wood, iron, and fabric that can be reused, and the pavilion’s conical shape will allow for increased airflow to keep it cool. Located in Expo 2020’s Sustainability District, the pavilion aims to attract around 2.5mn visitors during the six months of the expo.

NEWSMAKERS Bagel Yard project by H2R Design

H2R Design uses greenery and wooden textures for the Bagel Yard project H2R Design completes Dubai’s first Bagel Yard outlet, Montreal’s renowned bagel concept. H2R Design has created a contemporary and naturally lit space adorned with a variety of vibrant greenery for contrast and texture. Upon entering the shop, guests can stimulate their senses with the delicious aroma of freshly-baked bagels hanging gracefully on the featured pegboard wall. While the wall presents Instagram-worthy content for visitors to capture, H2R Design strategically included the feature to offer a space for the oven-baked bagels to cool

off on the brass hooks behind the counter. Commenting on the project, the lead designers Husain Roomi, Hasan Roomi ,and Jacqui Shaddock expressed their vision for the project: “We were briefed with the task of creating a cosy and home-like destination for customers to fall in love with. Given the intricate detail that is put into the bagel-making process, we wanted to represent this delicacy within the design of the space. By creating a fresh, clean, and aesthetically appealing interior layout, we have proudly

created the new home for Montreal’s famous home-made bagels in the city of Dubai.” Acrosss space, warm-coloured wooden textures have been cleverly placed within the floor and furniture panelling to symbolically represent the significance of the wood in making these distinct bagels. Interweaving the industrial metallic and copper materials within the counter tabletops, the utensil holders and table numbers, the design offers a traditional setting with the modern appeal to cater to all generations alike.

Designer Benjamin Hubert collaborates with Cosentino for Milan Design Week 2019 British industrial designer Benjamin Hubert, who has a design agency called ‘LAYER’ has teamed up with Cosentino to create a large architectural installation for Milan Design Week 2019. The fair would take place from April 8-14, 2019, in Milan. The iconic called Raytrace is an immersive, architectural installation showcasing Dekton product and its features such as strength, durability, and beauty. Raytrace will feature a 25m long and 6m high triangular passage composed of Dekton ultracompact surface, which would be balanced on a single edge within a dark, atmospheric space. Upon entering the passageway, a mesmerising caustic pattern slowly dances across the surface, emulating the refraction of light through water – evoking the serene feeling of being underwater. As visitors walk through the passage, they become an integral part of the installation, as their shadows are cast against the structure’s surface. Two mirrors at either end of the vault reflect the installation, creating the illusion of infinite space and offering glimpses of the caustic patterns playing out on the interior. Hubert says: “The creation of Dekton is a highly technological process that emulates the metamorphic changes that naturally occur with stone.” “The extraction of water using extreme heat and pressure throughout the manufacturing

process is what makes Dekton a durable material most suited for architecture. Raytrace is a direct response to this method - we take the idea of water and architecture, two integral themes in the conception of Dekton, and create an architectural structure, filled with an immersive caustic lighting effect – a powerful combination of architecture and nature,” Hubert elaborates further. “This installation demonstrates the limitless

versatility of Dekton, hoping to inspire architects and designers with the beauty and technological qualities of the material,” says Santiago Alfonso, Vice President of marketing and communication at Cosentino Group. Raytrace will be exhibited in the historical vaulted warehouses beneath Milan’s Central Train Station as part of the third edition of Ventura Centrale.

MAKING LUXURY A HOUSEHOLD NAME! In conversation with Samer Al Isis, CEO of Poltrona Frau Group ME, on increasing the brand’s reach, challenges of the luxury retailing industry, and the grand launch of Cockpit Chair in collaboration with Ferrari By Roma Arora Photography: Dhananjay Shekar Poojari

T

he business of luxury is not an easy one and to be at the top of the game call for real commitment. A commitment to make a luxury brand a household name in the Middle East. This is the vision for Samer Al Isis, CEO of Poltrona Frau Group ME, an international leading high-end furniture brand. Al Isis is a highpowered, business-savvy corporate leader, with 20 years of experience in the industry both locally and regionally, and his forte lies in team development and strategic planning. He joined the luxury Italian brand in 2011 and over the years he has executed successful high-level tasks and major corporate decisions at top-tier institutions across the Middle East and Europe. Throughout his career, Al Isis has remained passionate about luxury in all aspects and therefore he wants to make Poltrona Frau Group of brands a “household name”. The design enthusiasts and endusers are stressing upon quality and impeccable craftsmanship and Al Isis knows this is the USP

of Poltrona Frau Group of brands and he wants it to be the most-preferred brands in the Middle East. “Fundamentally, we spend most of our lives surrounded by design—at home, in the office, in the airport lounges, in the museums, etc. In the last 10-15 years, I have witnessed the evolution of taste in our region, from the baroque and rococo classic to modern and contemporary. In essence, furniture buyers for their homes or organisations have moved from over-the-top opulence to intrinsic luxury in the choice of material, quality of craftsmanship, and the excellence of industrial processes in manufacturing quality furniture. This works in our favour as we are known for our superior quality products.” Al Isis wants the brands to reach out to a wide section of the market and he is taking the right steps forward. Recently, Poltrona Frau and Ferrari launched a limited edition Cockpit Chair that brings together imaginations and industrial philosophies of two Italian brands. The grand launch was attended by the crème de la crème of the design industry.

COVER STORY

Poltrona Frau has for long upholstered the interiors of Ferrari cars and now this was another challenging task for the Tolentino-based furniture manufacturer. “The Cockpit Chair is a result of years of close collaboration between both the brands. For decades, Poltrona Frau has been manufacturing the interiors of Ferrari cars as well as Ferrari showrooms worldwide. The Cockpit is the embodiment of what a cult brand represents: a chair in which the owner feels as if he or she is sitting in a Ferrari car seat. Since our launch event in February 2019, we have been receiving enquiries about colour customisation and firm orders. The typical owner of the Cockpit Chair is a 35-45-yearold Ferrari car male owners.” The armchair has an architectural and modular

structure and offers expansion possibilities. For the moment two versions are available, the President and the Executive. Both comprise a reclining base and seat, integrated with two different backrests. The President is the managerial model with a high backrest that offers generous support for the top half of the body and which is inspired by the ergonomics of competitive racing seats. The Executive model, a chair that adapts to all

work contexts has a deliberately low and narrow backrest to ensure freedom of movement. The furniture retail industry is a competitive place and with a great number of international brands coming into the region. What gives Poltrona Frau Group of brands an edge over the other brands? Al Isis says: “Our brands are timeless and appeals to the international, well-travelled, and highly cultured clients. Of course, there

are some good brands out in the market but our strength in addition to the top brands we represent is the quality, durability, and the level of our white-glove service. Poltrona Frau Group has a quite diverse clientele like homeowners of high-value properties, government entities, cultural venues, design-oriented hospitality properties, the group of family-owned or multinational companies, for their executive offices, amongst others. "For us, the most important thing is the general appreciation for good design, high-quality furniture, and the cultural shift from tolerating and accepting to rejecting unauthorised reproductions of copyrighted furniture design, says Al Isis.

With e-commerce coming out to be a big knock out the winner, it has clearly shaken up the morale of the brick and mortar showrooms. Are these online platforms any threat to luxury brands? Al Isis answers in support of the tangible showrooms: “In the highend design furniture industry, digital platforms still act as online catalogues of several brands and products. For individuals, the act of buying comes only after physically experiencing the product and interacting with the sales and design team to get better customer service, especially locally. For corporate buyers, with attention to the commercial side of the transaction, dealing with a local trusted company, with better commercial terms and greater attention to the client is the key.” With the retail market industry going through an overall rough patch, Al Isis’ mantra for success is not just based on the numbers. He says: “On a local level, we have had a successful 2018. The brand performed very well globally. The year 2019 is very promising too with solid projects backlog and a strong pipeline. For me, success means being honest with yourself, knowing your strengths and building on them, identifying your weaknesses, and improving or eliminating them” Al Isis has all praise for Dubai and how the design industry has evolved and matured over the period of time. The UAE is a regional leader when it comes to all things design, be it graphics, interiors, or furniture.

22 |

March 2019

The continuance of the price gap between unbranded and branded products keep growing high, this will definitely have a negative impact on luxury retailing industry. –Samer Al Isis

Al Isis believes: “In our business, the general taste for furniture design is driven by the architects and designers who present to their clients with the right furniture solution, aesthetically, and practically. Dubai, in particular, is becoming a true regional beacon of design innovation and we are very lucky to be based in this dynamic city.” But Al Isis can also sense the challenges which luxury retailing Industry will go through in the coming few years and it won’t be an easy road to travel. Al Isis delves in some deep thoughts and says: “There will be various challenges to place our attention on like millennial price sensitivity and how consumers are already increasingly willing to pay for brands that offer distinguishing value. Also, the continuance of the price gap between

unbranded and branded products keep growing high, this will definitely have a negative impact on luxury retailing industry and last but not the least, expansion of the parallel market that diverts goods to unauthorised sales channels.” But clearly, success comes after one conquers the biggest obstacles and Al Isis is ready to take on the challenges and turn them into achievements. “By leveraging the various strengths of our group, my vision for the coming five years is to set Poltrona Frau Group ME as a regional benchmark for the design, elegance, and excellence of Italianmade furniture. Our aim is to position this brand as the first choice for people and companies seeking luxury in their residential and commercial spaces in the Middle East,” signs off Al Isis.

sustainable

designs! Gerard Evenden, senior executive partner and head of studio at Foster + Partners, on how the only workable strategy to protect future generations is to have effective sustainable designs

S

ustainability in the built environment requires sustainable design which needs to address multiple and intertwined issues – environmental, economic, and social. Environmentally, the stark reality of climate change and the creation of environmental problems means the pursuit of sustainability and mitigating the widespread impacts of our current way of life is an urgent objective for humanity.

The challenge of sustainability The building industry has a substantial role to play. According to the UN, the construction and operation of buildings today accounts for around 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. The International Energy Agency has stated that in order to avoid dangerous levels of climate change, all future infrastructure – including cities, buildings, power stations, industries, and agriculture needs to be designed to be low carbon. The impacts of climatic change will be felt strongly in the Middle East. Water stress and extreme temperatures will become more intense, surpassing even the record-setting levels we see today.

Tackling the problem Both globally and regionally, frameworks and policies exist to help mitigate the effects of climate change. But technologists, architects, urban designers, planners, and their clients also have a role to help develop the strategies that address the climate challenge and to find tangible and practical ways to bring about change. A well-designed urban environment that makes use of the latest technologies to use energy efficiently, is generated through sustainable means and uses fewer, and less carbon-intensive materials can tackle emissions – all while creating an environment that is geared towards the occupant's comfort and social sustainability. Honed design methods that include learning from vernacular traditions and examining topography and local climate can be extended to address the ecological and infrastructure challenges that face us globally. Following this route also offers a means of economic diversification for the Middle East, reducing reliance on oil reserves for growth. Supplying affordable, good quality low-carbon housing while supporting emerging areas like hightech manufacturing can provide new jobs while simultaneously addressing climate change.

Use of right materials The materials chosen for a given project are essential for regulating temperature in a sustainable

way and can have a significant impact on its overall ecological footprint. Material sourcing is an important consideration – local materials or suppliers should be prioritised to reduce carbon content. And it is important that developments are designed to use as few materials as possible and do more with less. Using alternatives for concrete rather than relying on typical Portland cement can significantly lower carbon footprints. Desert sand is typically too smooth to be used to make concrete, but by adding graphene this local resource can be utilised – which would avoid the need to transport sand from overseas. Utilising treated wastewater in the

Gerard Evenden

curing process can also lower the environmental footprint of concrete. Dubai has ambitious goals for 3D printing. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has recently launched the Dubai 3D Printing Strategy, which aims for every new building in the city to be 25% 3D printed by 2025. As well as tapping into a new global market, this strategy could be fundamental in helping use fewer materials in the construction of new buildings, particularly through increasing construction efficiencies and reducing waste in the construction process. It is important that we recognise the urgent need to bring about change now. We are the last generation that can reverse the effects of climate change and we owe it to our future generations to make every effort to do so. Designing modern, technically enhanced environments that are truly sustainable – in every sense of the word is the only workable strategy.

INTERVIEW

Jay Paschall

Looking into the

future! Jay Paschall, senior vice president, Baker Interiors Group, on what makes the brand standout from the competition and his plans for the future Photography: Dhananjay Shekar Poojari

26 |

March 2019

How is Baker placed in the Middle East region? I am very happy with the response Baker is getting from this region. We have a mono brand branch at Dubai Design District (d3) and we have another showroom in the emirates as well. Recently, we have opened a large mono branch in Bahrain. In this part of the world what I have realised is that mono branches work really well. One of the challenges of my job is that the US is a very different model from Asia and the Middle East. In the US, people are reluctant to do the mono brand stores as they want more variety and the market is differently

www.design-middleeast.com

competitive. A good retail store is the US typically carries as many as 30-40 brands, but I guess that’s the nature of that landscape. But I do wonder how these stores focus on such a wide number of brands.

Is this your maiden trip to UAE and what do you feel about the luxury home segment here? It’s my first trip to Dubai and I can clearly say that’s it a wonderful place to do business. I think our mono branch at d3 is one of the prettiest and well-put-together showrooms that I have come across. I am happy to be working with our team

at Iconic Home in Dubai who are responsible for managing this store so amazingly well.

What is the USP of this American brand? This is our 129th year in the industry and our focus has always been quality, design, and craftsmanship. For us, attention to detail and getting the proportions right is a significant part of what we do. We collaborate with a lot of international designers such as Jacques Garcia, Laura Kirar, Jean-Louis Deniot, and Barbara Barry and this gives us a competitive edge over other brands too.

What is the way to succeed in this competitive market full of e-commerce websites and start-ups? There is always a need and want to buy original products, people who want classy and longlasting things; they will choose a reliable brand. A lot of start-ups try to copy a classy piece and sell it at a cheaper price, but that cannot go on forever. Many start-ups are narrowly focussed; they just deal with sofas, lights, or just beds. But we offer complete range of products for living room, bedroom, dining, offices and accessories too. We want to lead and not follow. What I think about

March 2019

INTERVIEW

e-commerce websites is that it’s a great medium to buy a lot of stuff but not luxury furniture. If I am spending a part of my savings on a piece of furniture, I would like to touch, feel, check the finishing, and sit on it before shelling out the hard-earned money. On the internet, it’s fine to put the images and tell your story but we still need tangible showrooms. That’s why we give a lot of significance to the brick and mortar stores.

What are the challenges you often come across in this business? One of the single biggest challenges is the delivery of our products and to transport them from one end to another. Most of our history included getting the goods from North Carolina to Texas, or to New York but not to Dubai or any other faraway destination, it’s a task. You need special care to handle and assemble the products.

Is there anything new you want to bring to the table? Because we belong to the design industry, things do change like fashion here with a new collection every year, it creates a buzz and excites people

about the brand. But with iconic brands, there’s a key element in their design, which runs across all the collections year after year. I want to bring that aspect of trademark to Baker as well. Be it the traditional reproduction or any other designer’s collection piece at our showroom, there should be a common thread that is visible in each design and becomes a part of our characteristics so that people can instantly recognise that it’s a Baker product.

on colours apart from the neutrals we do. People enjoy and get inspired by bright pieces. I also think that a mid-range brand, which caters to a lot more people, would be a good idea. The Milling Road brand, which comes under Baker, is little less expensive and we will work more on it so that it can bridge a gap between the designer and retail market. In order to achieve this in future, we have to focus on simple designs with the same Baker quality. Also, we might participate in more trade shows, the idea What are the plans for the is to reach out to more people and make them future? I guess in the future, our focus should be more understand what we do and how we do.

esteryear’s boring and cubical offices are disappearing, giving room to open-plan setting and collaborative environment that encourages communication. The new generation of employees wants exciting offices that are colourful, flexible, functional, and ooze cool vibes. There has been a shift in what people define as a workspace. As technology has encouraged flexibility and connectivity from anywhere in the world, the traditional 9-5 office rules no longer apply. With these constant changes to the way we work, will offices still exist in 50 years’ time?

Employee’s well-being is the main concern! Designer and manufacturer of high-end modular furniture brand, USM has been working with UNStudio’s Futures team to explore the shifting boundaries between work and domesticity, now and in the future. USM also collaborated with WorkHouse last year. WorkHouse is a speculative laboratory where the invention and articulation of new models of work is explored and experimented with by participants. Based on this experience, the participants formulated new working models with the goal of finding out how the design will provide

future solutions for new forms of organisation and the demands of the working world. Eric Berchtold, director Middle East & Africa, USM, says: “The office is often the place that an individual spends most of their time outside of the home. For this reason, it’s to the benefit of an employer to create a space that emulates the elements required for the health and wellbeing of each individual. An example of product development with the health of the user in mind is the USM Kitos Tables. Mechanically height adjustable, these tables are unique and faster than any other electrically adjustable table, allowing users to stand or sit depending on individual preference and encourage movement throughout the day.” Headquartered in the UAE and a subsidiary of ASGC Group, ASI delivers turnkey fitout solutions across the UAE. Dimitri Papakonstantinou, managing director at ASI shares his views: “There are some design trends that have proven their effectiveness and resulted in the well-being of employees. You can see that in real estate development, there is a focus on common areas, and it is the same inside the offices. Offices have more and more common areas where people can gather into

Ali Maarrawi, OFIS

work together or even individually, with the setting of these common areas are often more inviting. Plus, nowadays, elements that feel like “home” but with an awe effect are integrated into the workspace. The “home” effect is for employees to be comfortable; at the end of the day, employees spend most of their day in the office. The awe effect is to set a clear image of what the company is and stands for.”

Workspace affects productivity Productivity is no longer about sitting at your desk with your head down working all day. Research shows that sitting too much is harmful to our health and employers should be concerned about the health of their biggest asset: their employees. “Desks need to be in sync with our natural movements,” says Ali Maarrawi, general manager at OFIS, the UAE- based furniture and flooring solution provider. “If I want to stand, I should be able to stand and if I want to sit, I should be able to sit.” Desks today should be able to adjust to any height and conference tables should do the same since research also shows that standing meetings keep groups more engaged and less territorial than sitting meetings. Maarrawi further elaborates: “Agile designs make more sense because it feels more comfortable for employees- a concept which is widely talked about by our furniture partner Steelcase. If you have a house, you go to the space designed for the task at hand instead of having to sit in one spot all day. This increases your movement and creates an agile environment where people have choices, more control, and power. We still need to conquer

how to control distractions. You can’t control all distractions, but you can get up and move and that is a choice one needs to provide in an adaptive and innovative workspace.” Omar Abdelghafour, founder at Light Space Design has worked on a lot of office projects in the region and internationally and feels that a workspace needs to evoke dynamic interaction. He goes on: “By doing so the productivity of the firm becomes impacted to such levels that the output can be significantly measured instead of simply a visual change. All this innovation in the workplace comes from the way in which the design of the space is used to breaking down both physical and hierarchy walls where a CEO sits next to analyst and the breakout area can be in the centre of the workspace. This innovation changes the past way of workplace interaction and has been proven to work in boosting tangible results in productivity and cross-department interaction.”

Engaging workspace with technology Today's smart offices are slowly but surely moving away from cubical segregation into a more open working environment. What is new is the introduction of privacy pods and nooks. This is a natural occurring trend to promote distractionfree spaces for workers who just need to be in the zone for a while. It is really an organic mix of collaboration and personal space. Maarrawi talks about the advancements: “With the popularity of open floor plans, it’s certainly important for people to have a sense of privacy. People need a space that they can go to make a conference or Skype

Eric Berchtold, USM

call. It’s important to create those spaces and create a company culture that supports those spaces. Instead of the boring walls that usually put people to sleep, glass walls in the middle of a busy area can help keep the mind awake which are achieved with portable meeting spaces and phone booths.” Laptops and smartphones have made the traditional desk less of a requirement and more of personal preference – with individuals now more able than ever to curate their ultimate workspace environment. Berchtold says: “Technologically advanced products help to support the workforce by complimenting their work style with elements that they need throughout the day. USM introduced electricity to its most iconic design with the launch of the USM Haller E. It took USM seven years to make sure to not only bring electricity to the structure in the most effective way but also deliver it without

changing the principles of the iconic Haller System.” The new Haller E System delivers dimmable lamps in either warm, cool white or alternatively can accommodate USB chargers for mobile devices – ensuring that individuals can be connected at any time of the day. Imagine the ability to work and feel as if you were in a comfortable spa, with a laptop sipping tea, and looking at a view you could relax yet be productive. Abdelghafour believes that technology helps in uncluttering the spaces, “The way we have found when designing modern offices that technologically advanced products help firstly from a design point of uncluttering the workspace as less need for wires and clutter. A desk can be a screen, a charger, an internet portal. Meaningless devices and less clutter giving a far more zen spa feel to the office then what the stereotypical norm was.”

“Currently, delta lights are coming up with the fantastic invention in lighting both task and mood that give our designs the desired lighting feel. Vitra and techno are at the front of such innovation and we tend to integrate many of their product ranges when designing office spaces. Lately, katel have introduced a fantastic pavilion desking solution that is perfect for both open space, breakout, and meeting room solutions for our design language,” shares Abdelghafour.

Convincing the clients! This often depends on the culture of the company and awareness. Papakonstantinou explains: “To be honest, these concepts are not entirely new, so most clients should be aware of them. It is simply a matter of how much importance they place on them. It is important to note that incorporating some of these ideas and designs is not necessarily a costly exercise. We try to demonstrate this to our

48 |

clients by showing them how the use of materials and design concepts can enhance their acoustics, light and general 'feel' of the workspace.” Abdelghafour says: “The reality is at first there is a push back as the management tend to be older and more set in their ways of how the hierarchy should conform too. However, once a flow diagram and a concept is produced, presented then understood. There is never a discussion as the numbers and ethos are sound. Inherently after all is done and completed within a week of operations, we are always praised for how the dynamic and productivity has completely changed.” Clearly, the goal of the designers is to create a workspace that supports and promotes the wellness of employees using innovative products, latest technologies, and delivering an environment that results in a free flow of movement and communication. There are means, hopefully, more and more clients and end-users demand for the right products and designs that spell wellness.

With a strong commitment to materiality, the exterior of the Musha House is entirely covered in pieces of jura stone

T

he language we employ in our design is deeply enriched with the concept of sensory experiences. We feel, we listen, and we touch. We create atmospheres of refined sophistication that harmonise exterior and interior by integrating vegetation and water features in and around the building. The sensory experience works to enhance the user’s psychological depiction of the space and atmosphere. Our design process is initiated with a detailed study of the climate and weather patterns in the region, considering both the macro and micro climate of the site. Taking into account the hot desert climate of the Middle East, we purposely create cooler indoor atmospheres by shielding the building envelope from direct sunlight and heat. This is combined with effectively guiding cooler air into the building through large openings in order to cross ventilate the interior. We also warrant the use of appropriate building materials and insulation to ensure that the building's thermal mass operates efficiently. Each project is unique to the client's needs and vision. In order to translate that vision into reality, we employ several tools to create a homogeneous, creative, and highly functional design.

50 |

March 2019

Our projects effectively combine both culture-sensitive and open-plan living in design, ensuring that there is maximum privacy to the users without compromising the large open spaces. It is also culture-inclusive, incorporating traditional concepts and vernacular architecture, translated into contemporary design. We build our own models at various stages of the design process, starting with massing models and conclude with large detailed models. These models are crucial tools that allow us to create a geometrically appealing and proportional exterior language. The concept of our projects is developed with the help of a multidisciplinary team based in UAE and Argentina. Another important aspect of any building is the exterior, which is shaped by studying proportions, scale, and visual connections between volumes. Openings for windows are established according to the initial climate studies, and deliberately located according to internal space requirements. The idea is to create unique perspectives, dynamic spaces, and occupy the volumes effectively. We are committed to envisioning and building each client’s dream project. Zoumboulis shares a few of the projects by Remy Architects.

MUSHA HOUSE

Type of project: Residential Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina Area: 650sqm This residential home located within a gated community on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, is on a plot overlooking a lagoon.

www.design-middleeast.com

The project is developed in sections, obtaining three levels of uses. The social area is divided in two. One sector includes a double living area and a space for casual dining with the kitchen located on an elevated level gaining the best views towards the lagoon while the other sector on the ground floor combines a barbecue area connected with the pool. This way, the loudest spaces such as the garden, pool, and barbecue area are together with the guest bedrooms, while the master and children's bedrooms are located on the third floor to ensure privacy and comfort. The main door is cladded with lapacho wood and connects interior and exterior green areas. The circulation of the house is surrounded by green areas, steel details, and a glazed roof to catch natural light. For the interiors, a warm palette of materials was used, working with jura stone, lapacho wood cladding, wood flooring, and black steel details. The barbecue area, located on in the same level as the swimming pool, has two glass openings that open completely, merging interior with exterior. The barbecue area and infinity pool located towards the lagoon form the space of relaxation for the guests of the house.

BV House

Type of project: Residential Location: Nordelta, Argentina Area: 1000sqm This house is located in Nordelta, a neighbourhood in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina whose rectangular plot has privileged views that look out onto a lagoon. It’s a weekend house for a couple with children with a diverse program including spaces for recreation and relaxation with much comfort. The plan in the form of 'C' allows to generate an inner patio that receives North light while semi-covered areas protect the building from the sunlight of the West. This project consists of three levels with the social area arranged on the ground floor in direct connection with the outside landscaped area and the pool, the private programs on the first floor consisting of family bedrooms, a guest bedroom, and a TV room for family gathering while the third level houses the spa. These three levels are visually connected by the central area with its triple height space, a complex space where the sculptural staircase sits coated in travertine, floating above a black reflection pool which houses a volume for the wine cellar. The pivoting main door is cladded in wood

with black steel finishes, adding warmth to this palette of noble materials. The tropical aspect of the landscape gives colour and life to both the exterior and interior. The toilet is covered in pieces of black granite, which visually hide its boundaries, and is completely integrated with a patio of light which connects with a vertical garden in the tripleheight space. The large master suite has a desk space visually connected to the bedroom. The division resolved in glass and wood has a system of blinds incorporated to provide privacy. The spa, which offers a relaxing space inside the house, is coated in absolute black granite floors and dark walls. All the furniture and equipments are designed and tailored especially for each space as unique customised pieces, resulting in the house having an integrated design and great use of details.

YACHT HOUSE

Type of project: Residential Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina Area: 950sqm

This home is located in a privileged plot in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina with incredible views to the lagoon. This project consists of three levels with a social area arranged on the ground floor in direct connection with the landscape and the pool. The private programs on the first floor consist of family bedrooms, a guest bedroom and a casual sitting area for family gathering while on the third level, an office, pantry, and a TV room overlooking the lagoon. At pedestrian level, the front facade seduces with a set of travertine panels that fuse with the large panels of the gate and main door clad in lapacho wood. The circulation divides the main entrance from the social areas with a triple height green area and a reflection pool coated in dark granite. A travertine cladded wall emerges from the green area and disappears into the sky towards the glazed roof. While discovering the house, several green areas and a glazed roof accompany on different levels. Overlooking the garden, a double living and formal dining room takes shape. All set with minimal furniture of the highest quality. The travertine marble floor extends to the exterior outside, blurring the boundary between the inside and out. The kitchen and casual dining develops longitudinally to the ground and expands in the semi-covered barbecue area. For the interiors, a warm palette of materials were used, working with travertine, Italian nogal wood cladding, and black steel details.
