Forever Rose’s first cafe is developed using 2D illustrations! The Forever Rose Cafe aims to open in other prime locations and shopping malls across the GCC in coming years
Homegrown luxury florist, Forever Rose, opened the first Forever Rose Cafe at The Galleria Mall, Al Maryah, Abu Dhabi, UAE, recreating the boutique in a cafe setting and offering a unique experience to its customers. Designed to feel as if in a storybook, the cafe is developed as a 2D illustration allowing patrons to feel as if they are part of a drawing. Ebraheem Al Samadi, founder and CEO of Forever Rose, said: “We decided to open a Forever Rose Cafe as our customers are what is most important to us and we wanted to find a way to be a part of their everyday lives, even
if it is just through an amazing cup of coffee or dessert. The café is unique as wherever you take a photo, you will stand out. The room, our cups and plates are all illustrated in black and white, leaving only our customers, food and beverages in colour. This recreates a romantic notion of being a part of a fairytale. With the diverse culture of the UAE, I believe a lot of people from different parts of the world and age groups will now have the chance to try a sense of Forever Rose, if not through the flowers themselves, then definitely in the delicious delicacies on offer at the cafe.”
The Forever Rose Cafe serves a variety of exclusive beverages including signature menu items such as the orchid latte, rose and lavender lemonades, and the lavender latte. The signature drink, the Forever Rose latte, will be sure to impress with its Illy dark roast coffee beans, a combination of nine blends from nine different countries. The Cafe’s signature drinks also offer a variety of french syrups which incorporate extract of rose, lavender, and orchid. Beyond the beverages, the new Abu Dhabi spot offers a wide variety of desserts
including Forever Rose signature dishes such as rose, saffron and pistachio milk cakes as well as a broad range of bespoke Debailleul Belgian chocolate desserts and a selection of the finest unique tarts and mousses. The new studio is a bright, vibrant, and energetic space
Brand Creative’s new office is bright and energetic with large open-plan layout Brand creative’s latest workplace in Bay Square is well-lit, collaborative, and all about positive vibes. 2019 marked an exciting new chapter for Brand Creative. Bold, dynamic, multi-coloured, custom geometric graphics anchor the studio and are balanced by striking black and white bespoke features that reflect the agency’s refreshed branding. “Innovation is one of our driving forces and in order to innovate
you need to look at ways to evolve, push the boundaries, shift and progress. At the centre of it all is movement and ideas in motion, which strongly influenced the concept of our space,” explains Carla Conte, co-founder and creative director of Brand Creative. “You will see literal translations of the concept of movement darted around the space, such as our vintage matte black bicycle,
retro roller skates and custom illustrated skateboards depicting our global offices in Dubai, India and Toronto,” adds Conte. The large open-plan layout of the studio has also allowed for seamless collaboration and communication between all three departments of the agency, strategy, interior design, and graphic design, which means that there is always a constant flow
of movement and energy. The combination and use of signature pieces from global furniture manufacturers such as Schiavello and Steelcase have also aided in creating a comfortable, productive and stimulating environment. The change has had a positive impact for the staff, clients and overall operations, bringing new energy and prospects to the Brand Creative team.

Looking forward to new opportunities Michael Khoury, general manager of Mirodec Gulf, talks about the business accomplishments in 2019, and his plans for the New Year 18 |

Interview
The year 2019, has been a rewarding year for Mirodec— winning the Specialised Manufacturer of the Year Award at Design Middle East Awards 2019 and being nominated as the Sub-Contractor of the Year Award at another event. How do you feel and how to keep the momentum going? To be nominated by industry peers and receive recognition from established entities is extremely rewarding. Winning the “Specialised Manufacturer of the Year” in a city like Dubai speaks volumes about Mirodec’s production capabilities. Also, being shortlisted for the “Subcontractor of the Year” award alongside
industry titans such as “Alec Engineering”, “Depa Interiors,” and “China Construction” demonstrates Mirodec’s project management competences. We feel honoured and humbled, which makes us strive for more. We have to ensure that our work maintains its awardwinning level.
Take us through the year 2019, and share some of your highly accomplished projects? Last year has been a landmark year for Mirodec. We had the privilege of working on prestigious projects throughout the Emirates and abroad. In the hospitality sector, we worked on the new Address Skyview Hotel. Also, we completed
two new mall projects—the prestigious Al Maryah Centre in Abu Dhabi as well as the highly anticipated Nakheel Mall on the Palm. In the healthcare sector, we completed the challenging Burjeel Medical city in Abu Dhabi and were awarded another hospital project in Kuwait City. In the Retail sector, we were happy to work with several brands we love such as IWC, Tom Ford, Panerai, and Cartier. In the educational sector, we were honoured to contribute to the new American University in Sharjah and the residential sector, we had the privilege of working on numerous high-end villas on the Palm and in the luxurious Emirates Hills district.
Tell us more about your collaboration with Wilson Associates at Downtown Design and with Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ) at the Hotel Show 2019. We are no strangers to working with talented design offices across the UAE. Our teams are in constant cooperation regarding most upcoming projects in the region. In 2019, we were approached by two of the top UAE designs firms with collaboration offers regarding very exciting concepts that they were working on. GAJ participated in the Hotel Design Challenge at the “Hotel Show”. We were happy to collaborate with them and were extremely pleased when the team won the award! As for Wilson Associates, they were tasked with designing the main bar at “Downtown Design” in Dubai Design District. Accordingly, we were approached and decided to take part in their “Just One” campaign, which proved to be a great success.
Could you tell us something about the projects you're currently working on/ or will start working soon?
Just One Bar
We are entering the New Year with some exciting projects in hand. Mirodec was recently awarded several packages at the Etihad Midfield Terminal, which is due to be handed over in mid-2020. Another important project we are currently working on in Abu Dhabi is the YAS Family Hotel, which is currently being constructed by Spanish powerhouse San Jose Contracting. In

Dubai, we had recently signed contracts for two royal villas, and in Ras Al Khaimah we are in final negotiations over an exciting a new five-star hotel. Moving abroad, we are really excited to be working on a new hospital being developed in Jeddah, KSA.
KSA is proving to be a great market for Mirodec. What are you up to in that region? The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always been a key market for Mirodec. Some of our landmark projects include the Hilton and the Hyatt Regency Hotels as well as the prestigious Princess Noura University in Riyadh. Last year, we completed the Royal VIP Palace in the up and coming Sharma region on the Red Sea (which is part of the Neom Megaproject). Since then things have been moving forward very rapidly and accordingly in 2020, we are really looking forward to the opening of our branch in KSA!
Designers seem to be excited about Mirodec’s new online catalogue. Can you tell us more about it? Designers work with several different materials and should not be expected to know all the particulars of each one of them. As specialists in our field, we at Mirodec aim at making their lives a bit easier by providing them with a platform through which they can browse all the different possibilities achievable in the world of decorative glass. Since we manufacture custom made products, the catalogue obviously has its limitations. However, it is considered a great starting point for any designer aiming to specify a material for their projects. As advised by our clients, we have also streamlined the process of ordering bespoke samples and requesting for quotations directly from the product catalogue section on our website.
What do you think the biggest trend in the glass will be for 2020? Sustainability and “going green” is something that will be driving the manufacturing sector. Companies are increasingly sourcing environmentally friendly materials, demonstrated in the rising LEED and ESTIDAMA

material requirements of projects being built in the region today.
What are your goals and business strategies planned for 2020? 2020 is meant to be a big year for Dubai! Mirodec is specified for many of the Expo Pavilions and we are really excited to see it all come together. In terms of company goals and response to growing demand from our current clients, we aim to have our full-fledged metal
division up and running during the course of the year. As for new strategies, and to cater to the growing “end-user” demand of our products, we are currently working on a new branch of the business which will allow homeowners to customize decorative glass furniture for their homes as well as glass accessories which make perfect gift items. It is premature to discuss further details at the moment but we have a feeling that our clients are going to love this new service.

Developing skills for success Graeme Scott, director of Fairgreen International School, Dubai talks about the ‘Design, Engineer, Construct’ programme
‘Design, Engineer, and Construct’ programme is starting an education revolution as firstof-its-kind in the region. What better place is there to launch a classroom curriculum that incorporates architectural engineering and landscape design than Dubai, a city chock full of cranes and lavish gardens and buildings sprouting up at every turn. In order to prepare young people to partake in this field and be able to compete in the modern world, industry professionals understand that from a young age, students need a hands-on, holistic approach to understanding construction that

brings the outside world into the classroom. With this philosophy in mind, the ‘Design, Engineer, Construct’ (DEC) programme was developed and launched in 2009, in the UK by a non-profit called ‘Class of Your Own,’ specifically by their CEO Alison Watson, who has successfully rolled out this programme in high schools across the UK and who can be credited with inspiring the next generation of Built Environment professionals. DEC offers students the opportunity to develop a range of skills and knowledge fundamental to successful engagement in technical and
professional aspects of the construction and built environment sector of industry. There is a need for better understanding of these professions so that young people will aspire to a career in this important sector of the local and global economy. Hence, Fairgreen International School became the first school in Dubai to offer DEC at the start of this school year, and we are now just completing our first term of coursework. Through this engaging programme, our students have already been interfacing with engineering professionals and experiencing

industry-standard software, and learning at close range the competencies required to successfully operate in the real world of digital construction. The DEC programme resonates with our students for a multitude of reasons. With the many preparations leading up to the Expo2020, our students have an exceptional opportunity to learn and go behind the scenes of some of the world’s most impressive pieces of architecture. There is so much buzz about the actual Expo 2020 community and all of the infrastructure that is developed just
for this event. Moreover, as Dubai expands, the DEC programme will give students within the region the opportunity to work in alignment with some of the themes central to the Expo2020, such as mobility, sustainability and opportunity. DEC also answers to the unfortunate stereotype that construction somehow isn’t an appropriate industry for women to pursue in the UAE. By bringing in female professionals alongside their male counterparts, we are showing our students that this is a level playing field. Construction in the UAE creates numerous
job opportunities and generates an abundance of wealth within the UAE and the Middle East. All of our students will go through the DEC programme understanding the possibilities that await. The skills they acquire will also, translate to almost any other industry they may want to pursue in the future. The DEC programme was designed as an academically focussed, project-based learning opportunity that aims at improving skills such as critical thinking, resilience, and group work. The programme makes great considerations for real-world scenarios and situations within its teachings to maximise the workpreparedness of its students. DEC is designed to accommodate the needs of the digital age – its students are born into the 21st century and are digital natives. For instance, much of the construction world is based in digital jobs including VR, AR, AI, IoT, drones, robots, and lasers. The programme uses modern technology to teach much of its coursework, including cuttingedge digital modelling and analysis tools like Autodesk and Bentley software for building and infrastructure design. We are proud to have been the pioneer school to introduce this programme as part of Fairgreen’s International Baccalaureate curriculum. The DEC course is truly an exciting opportunity for our students, and one we hope will help them realise that their dreams are quite a possible reality well within their reach.

Architect and Founder of ASZ Architetti and SUPERFUTUREDESIGN* Dubai Creek Harbour, Dubai by Calatrava We used to make fun of Dubai for this, but this is true that it is the town of the records! So, setting and higher limits to the tallest tower it’s something that we want to see happening. Calatrava is a great architect and a better engineer; he made us used to incredible structures where a super high tech approach is aimed to combine performance and elegance. Despite, I undoubtedly like more the few examples of asymmetrical structures, I expect to see his masterpiece... and in this case, the dimension will make a difference.
Expo 2020, Dubai I grew up with Seville Expo ‘92. In fact, it was the theme for my final examination when I got graduated. The way I see the architecture, as Avantgarde and always innovation, the expo is the quintessence of this expression. It’s a very joyful moment when people meet and confront in a positive way: architecture takes the lead, in a balance of long term sustainability and short-term creativity, and the atmosphere is magic.

The Human Fraternity Project, Abu Dhabi by Adjaye Associates The project is a first-of-its-kind in the region, nurturing the values of peace and co-existence. The concept behind the architecture is using three clear geometric forms, not aligned but equal in size, with one being a mosque, a church and a synagogue. The project aims to bring people together and encourage acceptance, and tolerance.

The towers step down on the lower floors with the intention of reducing the high-density felling of the project making the ground and public areas more pleasant and encouraging people to spend more time outside, the complexity almost chaotic way in how the different components of the project are put together is compensated by an holistic design approach which results in a congruous and at the same time vibrant environment.
Inspired on the sand dunes this project is a testimony of the genius of Zaha Hadid Architects, the project is identified with the style of Zaha Hadid’s more recent body of work however it reflects a great sense of place making it feel that it couldn’t be located anywhere in the world, the building is also an example of sustainable design and will be one of the greatest architectural references in the region.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, Dubai (a project I lead the Interior Design for whilst at HBA and Woods Bagot) This project is ambitious and exciting and above all, will be a world-class library and asset for the people of the UAE. With several libraries of specific themes, Children's Library, Arabic Library, Family Library, International Library, Media Library, Young Adults Library and the like, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library will attract people on a continuous basis. The project is supplemented with world-class exhibitions spaces and auditorium; all located in the Al Jaddaf region on the Dubai Creek. The architecture is distinctive with its opened-book reference on the lectern and uses highly developed technology for light control for the users.

Driving down the Sheikh Zayed Road, it is hard to miss The Museum of The Future taking shape. Apart from the eyecatching Arabic calligraphy that adorns its stainless steel façade, this new building will harness cutting edge technology with robots and artificial intelligence providing a truly interactive experience for visitors. Cleverly constructed The Museum of The Future is comprised of three main parts: the green hill, the building and the void. The green hill on which it stands represents roots and permanence. The elliptical void within the upper structure represents innovation, and the upper building represents mankind, artistry and harmony.
Another magical project set to open in the UAE this year is Snow Abu Dhabi. Billed as the world’s largest destination of its kind—Snow Abu Dhabi will open this year on Reem Island. It aims to create an enchanted winter wonderland spread across different zones and includes the Snowflake Garden, Flurries Mountain, and a Crystal Carousel. Its centrepiece is the Enchanted Tree, which soars above the park creating a wondrous and stunning visual attraction.

Brazil Pavilion
What I like about the Italian Pavilion is the use of sustainable and recycled materials, such as orange peel, coffee grounds, mycelium, and recycled plastic collected from the oceans within its construction. Circular in nature the pavilion is designed so that nothing goes to waste and it can be reimagined in the future. It is a striking structure with a roof made from the upturned hulls of three ships with a flowing surface designed to reflect the sea and deserts. The base is formed by a giant sand dune made of sand from the Dubai desert.
Also adopting a nature-inspired design the Sweden Pavilion is based on the concept of forest and will be made entirely from wood. The whole ambience is one of the outdoors and is designed to give the feeling of walking through a Nordic forest while at the same time delivering a clear message of sustainability. Office and conference rooms are housed in tree houses high above the open plan ground floor area with clusters of trees forming enclosed spaces.
I particularly like the Brazil Pavilion, which makes creative use of wood and light to create a multi-functional space. It is designed to showcase the country’s diversity of landscape and inhabitants exploring the country’s historical dichotomy between man and nature. The central ‘Brazil square’ is a space for relaxation beneath a canopy of art installations, which is reached via the stairs along the terracotta sunscreen façade.

Creating an effective retail space How the challenging and demanding customers and clients are pushing the boundaries of retail design. Here’s what experts have to say… The retail landscape is drastically changing not just in terms of brands but the way a place looks and feels. This segment is currently undergoing a major transformation to keep up with the changes and influences that have swept our daily life in a storm. Instagram, medium, and influencers to name a few, have now replaced the role of newspapers, media, and radio. Earlier customers used to wait for the summer, spring, fall and winter collection launches to understand what the next trend is, to adapt and stay ahead of the game. Now, with a press of a button, we have access to everything at the tip of our fingertips. From a boutique perspective, online shopping craze is gaining popularity. More and more people are just entering stores to feel the fabric, try the item and purchasing them online. Online prices are harder to compete with. So, how can a retail space be called successful in given so many factors?
Highlight the focal point Hasan and Husain Roomi, founders of H2R Design, have a vast experience of delivering retail projects. Roomi brothers explain: “While we look at global trends and innovation, we also set our design movements that have set trends across the region. Although we add curious elements throughout our designed spaces, functionality, and aesthetic purpose are at the core of our designs.” Every place, every space has a heart that
needs to be highlighted. The duo further adds: “Like for retail boutique Symphony has Instagram-able elements and placed them at the shop front to targeting social media enthusiasts and customer curiosity. The dynamic architecture we created dictates the flow and functionality of the spaces that are adorned with artistic and organic objects like the celestial staircase that inspires social media photography and adds to enhanced customer experience. HOB is a great example in the evolution of retail, which has progressed into providing an experience rather than just a display of products. It demonstrates the storytelling style, which is an emerging trend in retail design, that takes the clients vision and harmoniously blends it within the interior language and aesthetics along with the brand and products. There are Instagram-able pops that encourage and result in the space being advertised independently through social media.”
The emergence of new luxury in retail The year 2020, could be the year that luxury powerhouses combine to conquer certain sections of the market. LVMH’s $16.2bn deal for Tiffany & Co and their move into the hospitality sector with their acquisition of the Belmond luxury hotel group and the Orient Express, as well as current talks between Kering and Moncler, more mergers

and acquisitions could follow - as recently reported by Bloomberg - showing a very vigorous luxury sector, ready to change and cleverly mutating shape when identifying new opportunities. Carlos Virgile, director/global head – Retail and Hotel at Virgile + Partners says: “We have seen a strong, sustained affinity with global luxury brands that would make such mergers worthwhile, particularly in the Middle East, during our recent collaboration in two exciting retail design projects for two different luxury department stores brands: Harvey Nichols in Dubai, run by the Al Tayer Group in the UAE, and Rubaiyat in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Both homes of top luxury brands are not only developing new ideas but transforming their identity and character through creativity and

strong design formulas, becoming closer to an exclusive fashion boutique model and moving away from a conventional blueprint.” Virgile further goes on: “Not just in the Middle East but at global level, changes are responding to the emergence of a new type of luxury consumer, expecting environments to be more characterful and engaging, embracing the exciting contradictions presented in the concept of ‘accessible’ luxury. As we enter a new decade, we will see the quality of store experiences and their designed environments rise to even higher extremes within the luxury market, in order to remain exclusive and impress their target audiences. The new type of shoppers, with a relaxed attitude to technology, more in-depth knowledge of brands and a new

aesthetic understanding will expect to interact with their environments in different ways – playing, participating, clicking, filtering, and touching.” When forecasting the future of retail, it is a given fact that digital technology will develop ingenious forms to cater to a new generation of luxury consumers and will validate the exploration of new territories in the luxury experience. Subtle, non-intrusive and seamless technology should play a strong supporting role in a world where the driving force of personal and human relationships will always continue to be behind luxury’s core values of exclusivity and craftsmanship.
Establishing people’s connection with the place In a world where more and more tasks are becoming automated, the world of design remains connected to the experiences of the designer. Whenever designers are tasked with the job to create interior and spatial designs for a client's various uses and experiences, they have to consider factors such as aesthetic capability and how people would interact and connect with space. For Maja Kozel, interior architect at Maja Kozel Design, there are two stages to access the “form of knowing” that are crucial in creating a design, and one must

be achieved before the other. Kozel elaborates that she must display an understanding of how designs can fulfil a functional role while taking into consideration the main experiences they have. For this, the designer must first know how the daily experiences of users influence the subjective process of creating meaning in their life. She describes: “In one of my latest projects, Altitude The Gym located in the lush greenscape of the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club, I collaborated with the branding Agency EMB Creative. The gym includes a wellness café, three separate enclosed classrooms a large gym area, changing rooms with showers and a small shop area. sea level or ground level”, has the underlying theme of reaching great heights, with endurance and perseverance. With this design directive, the team has created an indoor biophilic landscape, where the acoustic layers and floor gradient are the subtle basis of the variety of exercise areas. Subtle sustainable materials were used such as cork, timber and locally sourced tiles and steel with a touch of greenery, local artists were invited by the client to add their touch of magic to the interior design.” Everything is in sync and establishes a relationship of place, people, and materials used, all in one harmony.
The importance of nature and hence biophilia

Nature and the built environment when integrated create a synergy that prompts places where people want to be. Biophilia is influencing retail design by embracing and implementing biophilic elements. Shopping is an emotional experience, and the impact of the interior and exterior design influences that experience. Drew Gilbert, Senior Architect, Croquis supports biophilic elements in the design. He says: “We are showcasing biophilic application in the retail space through our project Samarra Gardens: a new landmark marketplace in Samarra, Iraq that features two plazas with a typology that takes a contemporary interpretation of the vernacular bazaar. An exterior shopping experience that goes beyond materialism, but rather a place of gathering, socializing, and celebrating culture. Visitors will enjoy a sense of comfort in tight alleyways and within the embrace of greenery. The marketplace allows smooth vehicular access and visibility. The design implements water features that are used for natural cooling in the courtyard spaces. Water feature acts as a catalyst to bring people together to linger and provide a comfortable experience for the visitors. Through the use of greenery in the site, the sense of exploration is boosted, therefore, the lingering enhance the time spent in the retail space, and encourages sales.”

Style Canal Cove Villas by My Pick One is an epitome of luxury and inspiration It’s simple yet extraordinary—Canal Cove Villa in Palm Jumeirah by design firm My Pick One has refined the luxury. The enchanting interiors of this residential project are mesmerising. For this interior design project, the team aimed for a concept that aligned with that of the Canal Cove Villas, a self-contained community that houses 3 to 4-bedroom properties. With the Palm Jumeirah embodying futuristic themes, it was important for the design firm to include contrasting elements as well. As a result, the villa’s interior acted as a merger between postmodern and classic design. With its picturesque scenery and naturally captivating views, it has all the features that people would look for in their dream home or vacation spot. The neighbourhood is carefully nestled between two of the palm’s ‘fronds,’ resting on the edge of the Arabian Gulf.

The My Pick One team of interior designers implemented a philosophy surrounding sustainability into the interior design by using natural and renewable materials. The design is meant to make the most of the space without compromising on its expansive nature. As a result, postmodern minimalism was a highlighting factor in the design. In the villa, every room’s interior exudes a distinct ambience. With three spacious bedrooms, there’s plenty of ‘room’ for experimentation, creativity, and depict inspiration. The villas feature all the amenities one could possibly wish for, whether it’s a communal garden, gymnasiums, or leisure clubs. The entire neighbourhood showcases a variety of services and amenities with a boutique-like aesthetic. By fusing an intimate sophistication with a showstopping attitude, they crafted a design that radiated boutique-like energy.

Moving towards the modern handcraft Sami Savatli, founder of Savatli Architects, tells about the significance of traditional handcraftship in the local markets of Istanbul and his latest project—Bodrum House Traditional Turkish handcraft is the evident art forms that hold the authentic value of our cultural heritage and reveal the rich artistry that developed from different civilisations throughout history. There was a time when there was no differentiation between handcrafts and fine arts. However, today this conceptualisation of modern handcraftship is challenging craftsmen to produce well-designed modern products and yet still maintain that traditional element – either with the use of traditional techniques or materials. These kinds of specialised products ranging from jewellery, home décor, textiles, carpets, leather goods, and other art products are quite popular and accessible in Istanbul’s design stores and art galleries. The growing market of these specialised businesses has their finest materials carefully picked to produce uniquely designed and preserved craftsmanship. These fine materials such as brass, gold, and silver are being revived and constantly experimented with to create modern luxury quality workmanship. At Sami Savatli Gallery & Showroom, we

In the gallery; home décor accessories, lighting fixtures, furniture, and paintings represent pieces of traditional value as well as the great potential it embodies as modern design. The collection involves materials of different authentic glasses, perforated metal surfaces, aged brasses, different kind of woods and marble. The gallery not only includes home decor products and designs but also includes paintings of Islamic calligraphy by Sami Savatli as well. Many local luxury designers and craftsmen are showcasing raw materials and also their raw talent in the touristic and upscale quarters of Istanbul and the world. The most significant examples of this kind are Sevan Bıçakçı, Kutnia, and Zeynep Fadıllıoğlu. Sevan Bıçakçı is a famous jeweller who honed his skills in the heart of the Grand Bazaar in Fatih which is one of the neighbourhoods that houses the richest history and architecture of Istanbul. His lovely jewels look effortlessly designed but require such an intensive level of expertise. In terms of textile arts, KUTNİA is a special

She has her product line called Product Range with a beautiful collection of furniture that is deep in intimate and warm colours and texture. In my recent project called Bodrum project in Turkey, I preferred to use mellow coloured hints and textures to blend perfectly with the lighting arrangements especially placed to bring out its laidback ambience. Before designing a house, I try to imagine living in that house first to capture the essence of what the inhabitants may need. I generally prefer approaching designs with rich and refined details. All doors and cabinets are made out of classic blackened wood along with coffee tables made out of authentic glass and marble in contrast with the natural bronzed lighting details and nude tinges brushing throughout the house, making up a very warm and tasteful coloured palette especially tailored for a beautiful summer day.

Connecting with future LWK + PARTNERS discusses galleries and pavilions in China
Chongqing Jiangshan Yun Chu – Legend Gallery
Galleries and pavilions of real estate developments are often standalone works of art that remain as sites of cultural mediation for the community after the termination of sales activities, given their potential conversion into educational institutions, clubhouses, retail outlets and more. As the face of marketed properties, these galleries have acquired growing importance in China’s real estate industry. Equipped with eclectic design experience in the region, LWK + PARTNERS has created a host of galleries and pavilions for major property developers. The practice has accumulated sound knowledge of designing this type of architecture, particularly for China, with a comprehensive and curatorial understanding of people, environment and history of the community that they design

for, to create solutions that best fits the projects’ individual contexts. These galleries and pavilions serve with multiple identities as a business platform, art gallery as well as experiential centre. With holistic designs that express aesthetic statements and commercial pragmatism, the architectures provide a connection with the future community being envisioned, while posing a great opportunity for showcasing the corporate image and service quality of developers. Circulation is key to constructing a dynamic environment and facilitating visitors’ experience. Organisation and layout have to be carefully planned to allow better performance of programmes, as well as high flexibility in response to potential future, uses with respect to
sustainability and cost-effectiveness. The display area, usually built with double height, plays the part of a focal point that leads the movement of visitors throughout the architectural space. This special feature introduces four projects in LWK + PARTNERS’ portfolio, with the Spiritual Bay Pavilion in Qingdao, China, being the latest addition, offering insights from the practice’s 30+ years of providing optimal solutions.

Chu – a project celebrating the relationship of cities and nature. This two-storey stark white gallery is almost a tribute to the local landscape, with the image of cliffs, riverbeds and mountains translating into curves, cusps and cuts that dominate the architecture. The generous use of customised glass panes has also given it an abundance of sunlight and a 360-degree panorama of its surroundings. All in all, the Legend Gallery has taken geographical influence to a new level by inserting a paramount degree of artistic interpretation to building design.
The LOOP, Chongqing
Chongqing Vanke Forest Park Sales Gallery, Chongqing, China The Chongqing Vanke Forest Park Sales Gallery is a great example where new dimensions are formed by ‘borrowing’ space from the environment. The key design concept came out of an attitude to life that treats the home as a place of retreat, while a home close to nature provides one of the best options. Sitting next to the world’s thirdlargest public urban park, the building provides city dwellers with a place to relax by being a ‘wood cabin in the mirror’, with a gigantic ‘mirror’ mounted on the building’s elevation to reflect 5,000 square metres of fir trees before it. This creates a mesmerising impact on visitors while serving to provide insulation and save energy for the building. Beyond its initial function of the commercial showcase, the gallery will continue to serve the community by becoming a kindergarten.
The LOOP, Chongqing, China Geometric space is a dominant theme at The LOOP, conceived as a charming gem hovering above the prestigious landscape of Zhaomu Mountain in Chongqing. The two showrooms are artfully linked by a crescent-shaped glass-bottomed bridge named the Skywalk, which offers visitors a breathtaking view of lush greenery amidst the mountains. This was made possible by a full steel frame structure and an onion-ring-like cladding system which echoes the dynamic contours of the site. All these contribute to the slick building form that embodies the kind of luxury, power and grace intended by the Shun Shan Fu low-density residential project.

Tips and Tricks
Four interior trends to incorporate in 2020 As 2020, is here now, new design trends appear on the horizon and with them comes the perfect opportunity for a house revamp. As fashion changes with the new season, so do decor trends that are always evolving, tempting us to continuously update our interior. Here are something interesting tips by aura to deck up your house
1. The colour palette we all needed The colour palette for the season has been set, showing burnt orange, vivid blues (or Classic Blue, as Pantone has announced will be the colour of 2020), and hot velvets. As much as this might not sound like everyone’s cup of tea, these colours are this year’s perfect blend of luxury and comfort. However, neutrals are not a thing of the past. Neutral colours will be in once again this upcoming year, and no, they are never too plain.
2. For the love of marble Marble will make a modern comeback this
upcoming year. Traditionally confined to bathroom or kitchen interiors, marble has had a modern reboot and will this year come with a twist, focusing on small doses and accent pieces rather than big pieces that’ll overwhelm the eye.
3. Metals are not going anywhere 2020 is going to be the year of metallics. We’re not talking single tone metal sheen; this trend encourages instead a dazzling mix of complementary tones from both the warm and cool sides of the spectrum. Try combining one of aura’s modern marble dining tables with golden
wired metallic chairs whilst using contrasting cutlery set in silver as well as dining ware with silver trims in order to add charm and texture.
4. Take a trip down the curvy lane Furniture with curved shapes and rounded corners can be seen used in modern interiors for a retro and a sophisticated feel. The trend of arches, curved edges, and wavy design accessories is very popular. When it comes to this type of design, aim towards side chairs or single-seated sofas such as aura’s peach side-chair beside the cream white sofa for a finessed look.
