=Junior Corner A Message to the Junior Members: I hope that 2015 is going well for all families involved in the Shorthorn industry, here are a few things to think about for the upcoming year: “Wake up with determination, go to bed with satisfaction.” I’ve always been a very busy person. If I’m not busy, I’m bored, and if I’m bored, I’m not happy. Ever since I can remember, whether it was showing cattle, 4-H, FFA, Block and Bridle, traveling somewhere, or just about anything else you can imagine, I’ve always been doing something. I think that it is very important to get involved with and make a difference in the things in which you are passionate about. Find something you love, and jump in. Never be afraid that you will fail or not meet your goal, because you never know what will happen unless you try. And if you do not get it right
16
the first time that just means you should try something else. You are in control of your life and you have the power to change things that you don’t necessarily like. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” – Dr. Seuss. Since we are starting a new year, it is fitting that we set New Year’s Resolutions, or goals to achieve (even if they are not within the year). I encourage you to set goals and strive to achieve them. I encourage you to try new things. Most of all, I encourage you to find things that make you happy, after all, life is short, smile while you still have teeth. Take advantage of opportunities that are given to you. Some opportunities to take advantage of within the Junior Association include scholarships, internships,

Shorthorn sidekicks, the junior board, and KEY Conference. KEY Conference is in the process of being planned for the upcoming year but it is a great conference to attend. You can learn more about leadership, tour farms, and make friends during the three day event. KEY Conference has always been one of my favorite things about our Junior Association; my first KEY Conference in Iowa was actually when I set my goal of being on the Junior Board. Find things that you like to do and go for it, if you set your mind to it, you can do it! I hope that 2015 is a year full of wonderful opportunities for all of the junior members to pursue. See you soon and Happy New Year! =

Board of Directors American Shorthorn Association and Subsidiary Omaha, Nebraska Report on the Financial Statements We have audited the accompanying financial statements of American Shorthorn Association (a nonprofit organization) which comprises the consolidated statements of financial position as of August 31st, 2014 and June 30, 2013 and the related consolidated statements of activities, changes in net assets and case flows for the periods then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements. Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible fo the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Out responsibility is to express an opinion in these financial statements based in our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatements. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgement, including the statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of American Shorthorn Association and subsidiary as of August 31, 2014 and June 30, 2013, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the periods then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States. NOTES TO CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS • AUGUST 31, 2014 AND JUNE 30, 2013 NOTE A - NATURE OF OPERATIONS The Association is organized as a non-stock, non-profit corporation and is not subject to local property or income tax. Its primary function is to record and register Shorthorn cattle and to improve the breedlines throughout the world. The Association’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Shorthorn Publications, Inc. has been consolidated in the accompanying financial statements. The Association elected to change its year-end effective August 31, 2014. Accordingly, these financial statements reflect the activity of the Association for the fourteen month period from July 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014. NOTE B - SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES Basis of Presentation - The accompanying financial statements have been prepared on the accrual basis of accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Net assets and revenues, expenses, gains and losses are classified based on the existence of absence of donor-imposed restrictions. Accordingly, net assets of the Association and changed therein are classified and reported as follows: Unrestricted net assets - Net assets that are not subject to donor-imposed stipulations. Cash and Cash Equivalents - The Association considers all highly liquid investments with an original maturity of three months or less to be cash equivalents. Inventory and Supplies - Inventory of supplies and items for resale are carried at cost (first-in, first-out), which is not in excess of market value. Property - Depreciation is computed using the straight-line method over the estimated useful lives of the related depreciable assets as follows: Building 40 years 3-7 years Furniture and office equipment Vehicles 5 years Maintenance - repairs and renewals which neither materially add to the value of the property and equipment nor appreciably prolong its life are charged to expense as incurred. Gains or losses on dispositions of property and equipment are included in income. Income Taxes - The Association’s operation is tax exempt under Section 501(c)(5) of the Internal Revenue Code and accordingly, the financial statements do not reflect a provision for income taxes. The Association has adopted the provision of FASB ASC 740-10-50 effective July 1, 2009. The Association’s tax returns for the years ended June 30, 2012 through 2014 are subject to audit by the Internal Revenue Service. Management believes that they have not entered into any transactions that either result in unrelated business income or jeopardize their tax-exempt status. Use of Estimates - The preparation of financial statements in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosures of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Actual results could differ from those estimates. Accounts Receivable - Accounts receivable are recorded when invoices are issued and are presented in the balance sheet net of any allowance for doubtful accounts. Accounts receivable are written off when they are determined to be uncollectible. The allowance for doubtful accounts is estimated based on the Association’s historical losses, the existing economic conditions, and the financial stability of its members. Most of the Association’s business activity is with its members in the cattle industry. Consequently, the Association’s ability to collect its receivables is affected by economic conditions in that industry. Advertising Costs - Advertising costs (other than direct-response advertising costs) are charged to expense when incurred. The Company has not incurred any direct-response advertising costs, which are capitalized and amortized over the period during which future benefits are expected. Consolidation Policy - The accompanying consolidated financial statements include the accounts of the Association and its whollyowned subsidiary. Inter-company transactions and balances have been eliminated in the consolidation. Reclassifications - Certain amounts of the prior year have been reclassified to conform with the current presentation. NOTE C - PUBLICATION AGREEMENT Durham Management, Inc. has the responsibility for operating and for meeting subscription obligations of Shorthorn Publications, Inc., (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Association) under a lease agreement with the Association. Under this lease agreement, Durham pays $1,000 a month to the American Shorthorn Association for rent. In addition, Durham also reimbursed the American Shorthorn Association for various shared administrative services. NOTE D - DEFERRED REVENUE At August 31, 2014, the Association had received funds totaling $5,808 that will be recorded as revenue by the Junior National program during the year ended August 31, 2015. An additional $37,000 is recorded as deferred revenue for Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) and membership’s fees representing a match to the residual obligation of the Association to provide members services through the end of the calendar year. This is a result of the current policy of the Association. At June 30, 2013, the Assoiciation had received funds in advance for programs to be conducted subsequent to year end. This funds include $28,583 from the Leading a Legacy program and $20,010 fromthe Funding the Future initiative. These funds were to be utilized by the carious activities of the Junior National and Junior programs and were recorded as revenue during the 2013-2014 fiscal period. NOTE E - COMMITMENTS The Association has entered into operating leases, expiring through April, 2018 for use of office equipment. Total lease payments for the periods ended August 31, 2014 and June 30, 2013 were approximately $15,398 and $12,314, respectively. The minimum lease commitments are as follows for the years ending June 30: 2015 9,708 2016 9,708 2017 8,003 2018 1,328 2019 $28,747 NOTE F - RETIREMENT PLAN Effective January 1, 2003, the Association established a savings incentive match plan for employees (SIMPLE Plan) and terminated their existing defined contribution plan. The SIMPLE Plan allows employess to make elective contributions and requires the Association to make matching or nonelective contributions, The Association’s contribution to retirement plans totaled $10,989 and $11,316 for the years ended August 31, 2014 and June 30, 2013, respectively. NOTE G - ADVERTISING COSTS Advertising expense totaled $28,547 and $26,917 for the periods ended August 31, 2014, and June 30, 2013, respectively. NOTE H - SUBSEQUENT EVENTS Management evaluated transactions and events occurring subsequent to August 31, 2014 and through October 22, 2014 (the date the financial statements were available to be issued) to determine whether any events should be recognized or disclosed in these statements. There were no material transactions or events in the subsequent period requiring disclosure or recognition in the statements.
