Members of the American Shorthorn Association (ASA) gathered November 14-17 for the ASA Annual Meeting and National Show held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Kentucky. Among the first order of business at the annual meeting was the election of the Board of Directors. Nancy GrathwohlHeter of Raymond, Kan., was elected to the ASA Board of Directors for a three-year term. Current members Marty Loving, Pawnee Rock, Kan., and Mark Gordon, Middletown, Ill., were re-elected for a second term on the board. Mike Bennett of Ducor, Calif., and Mark Gordon, were re-elected to serve as President and Vice-President, respectively. Century Club Award honorees were announced during the Jack C. Ragsdale National Shorthorn Show. Century Club recognizes breeders who have registered over 100 head of Shorthorns in the past year. National Shorthorn Lassie Queens Crowned by Christine Heverly

The National Shorthorn Lassie Association would like to congratulate Darci Cash and Alyssa Hofstatter who will be serving as the 2014-2015 National Shorthorn Lassie Queen and Alternate National Shorthorn Lassie Queen. Darci Cash is from Fay, Oklahoma and is the daughter of Don and Miranda Cash. She is a senior at Geary High School and plans to start college in the fall of 2015. Next, Alyssa is from Lowpoint, Illinois and is the daughter of Alan and Ruth Hofestatter. She is sophomore at Illinois Central

College with plans to transfer to Iowa State University. Darci and Alyssa will be sporting the plaid over the next year helping promote the Shorthorn Breed at Shorthorn events across the country. neither knows victory nor defeat.” The beef industry has seen a number of victories and defeats. One of the differences between the two outcomes is the leadership. Change does not happen quickly and I have seen a number of good leaders with clear objectives be removed by those who criticize and point out how the strong man stumbled. We are a society of instant gratification and the beef industry can not and will not change that quickly. The leader who is confident in their plan, clear in the objectives, listens to others, holds the course and strives to do good deeds should be given the time and support to put their vision into action. Too many times our industry has followed the “monkey see, monkey do”

The social influence of following a person, an idea or an action without knowing the reason or consequences can weaken not only the cattle but also weaken the future of the industry when we spend more time and money reversing the effects. The leader who only focuses on short term goals can cause long term difficulties. A leader with long term goals will select several short term objectives and will recruit others who have seen success in each of the short term objectives to give advice and oversee the success of each individual objective. =

Welcome Amy Sampson is the newest member of the Shorthorn Country as a graphic designer. Sampson received a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Wartburg College. While at Wartburg, she was a member of the collegiate volleyball team and continued to show livestock. Sampson served as a summer intern for the American Maine-Anjou Association in 2014. She also worked for Encore Visions as a graphic designer. Sampson is from Nevada, Iowa. There she grew up on her family’s farm raising cattle and show pigs. She was an active member of both 4-H and FFA, showing livestock at local, state and national shows. Although her show career has come to an end, she has the passion to continue to help the industry develop. =
