North American and Annual Meeting The ASA Board of Directors is dedicated to openly communicating with the membership and requested the following Board Statement be published: “Recently the property surrounding the building that the ASA owns and uses as their office has been purchased and slated for development. The group developing the properties approached the ASA board with an offer for purchase. Considering excessive and unused space in the existing building, upkeep of an older building and potential detrimental change in the area the ASA board felt it was their responsibility to membership to seek representation from a listing agent and explore the possibility of relocating to a more appropriately sized, modernized site that is beneficial for the ASA administration office. As the development of the area becomes more imminent and preserving the asset of the ASA takes shape in potential relocation the board of directors will keep the membership informed. Every potential change is being considered with the upmost importance of protecting the assets of the ASA and the improvement of the administration to better serve its mem-

bers. Thank you for patience as we navigate this potential time of change”. (From the ASA Board of Directors.)

Argentine Genetics Opportunity Sells for $35,000 by Chandler Steele

American Shorthorn Association President Mike Bennett welcomes Argentine Shorthorn breeder Héctor Mario Eyherabide to the U.S. with gifts from Michigan Shorthorn Breeders Association and American Shorthorn Association.

“We must dream. We must imagine. We must create.” This quote by Detroit tech entrepreneur Josh Linker perfectly describes the shared vision of Steve and Julie French of Little Cedar Cattle Co., Michigan, and Héctor Mario Eyherabide of Cabaña Santa Cecilia, Argentina. Together, they have partnered to bring a new wave of Shorthorn genetics from Argentina to the United States. Since their arrival in Argentina in 1826 from England, the Shorthorn breed was known for fleshing ability, maternal traits, and feed efficiency. Economic production traits are the solid foundation on which the highly functional breed was built. “Today, Argentina’s beef industry is made up of large herds of cattle that utilize A.I. to produce huge contemporary groups of progeny that allow them to make genetic progress in the most progressive herds. Their environments are not that much different than what we find in the U.S., so those genetics could be utilized in the U.S. to make progress,” said Jack Ward, COO and Director of Breed Improvement at the American Hereford Association. Ward further explained, “I have judged shows for Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn on multiple occasions in Argentina, and I find their cattle to be

Shorthorn cattle breeders Little Cedar Cattle Co., Michigan and Cabaña Santa Cecilia, Argentina join with the buyers of the “Elite Argentine Genetics Opportunity,” Jimmy and Selena McGuire, South River Genetics, Oklahoma. South River Genetics bid $35,000.00 US to share in an embryo transfer flush of the two Shorthorn females, Elvira and Potranca, bred by Cabaña Santa Cecilia and owned with Little Cedar Cattle Co. fundamentally sound, with the right kind of balance of muscle, growth and fleshing ability.” Eyherabide has been raising Shorthorns for more than 50 years in the vast cattle country of Argentina. His first contact with Shorthorns was as young boy on his maternal grandfather’s farm. At 15, his father gave him a Shorthorn heifer from one of the most renowned herds of the time. Up to the 1960s Shorthorns had been the dominant beef breed in Argentina, but then they started to lose prestige and leadership as the largest herds changed to Angus. When he started breeding Shorthorns as a teenager during this time of transition, Eyherabide was going against a very strong current of change. Many people in the cattle business laughed at him. In 1972, after participating in some smaller shows, he courageously decided to take his Shorthorns to Exposición Rural de Palermo, which is Argentina’s largest and most important agricultural event, and known throughout the world. In that first exhibition over forty years ago, Eyherabide’s Shorthorn bull

calf was named champion bull and his heifer won reserve grand champion female. Since then he has exhibited Shorthorns at Palermo annually and has won countless championship titles. By the early 1980s, the demand for Shorthorns in the commercial beef industry of Argentina had deteriorated to the extent that Eyherabide came to the U.S. in search of opportunities to introduce American sire genetics into his breeding program. He was encouraged by leading U.S. breeders such as Barry Jordan, Ric Hoyt and Jack Ragsdale, as well as ASA Executive Secretary Dr. Roger Hunsley, and utilized the influence of the American Shorthorn breed to help create Shorthorns that would satisfy the demands of Argentine commercial beef breeders. Extremely selective regarding the economically important traits of fertility and ruggedness, Eyherabide worked at breeding and developing a Shorthorn range bull that would be acceptable in the market, and prove to produce the high quality beef for which the breed was once known. (continued from page 9) In 1987 he held his first successful auction of 35 Shorthorn range bulls. By 2001 the demand for his Shorthorn bulls had increased to create a sale offering of 600 Shorthorn bulls. He now markets almost 1,000 bulls each year to commercial producers while producing and selecting high quality seedstock to advance the Shorthorn breed’s place in the competitive and demanding Argentine beef industry. Cabaña Santa Cecilia is still a highly respected and successful show ring competitor at Palermo, nowadays of both Shorthorns and Angus. Bred by Eyherabide, the full sisters LEAVE Elvira X1013ET and LEAVE Potranca X1015ET earned an array of awards at the 2014 Exposición Rural de Palermo in late July. They were champion and reserve champion in their division as well as champion pair of heifers. Elvira advanced to third best female overall behind the grand champion and reserve grand champion females. Elvira and Potranca are owned in partnership with Steve and Julie French who were on hand to witness the heifers’ show ring success at Palermo. At the 2014 Great Shorthorn Revival, Cabaña Santa Cecilia and Little Cedar Cattle Co., offered an embryo transfer flush of either Elvira or Potranca, or half interest in the flushes of both. The females produced their first calves in early September just days before they turned two. For their first flush, they will be bred to the leading Argentine Shorthorn bull, Alston Polar Star, the dominant sire of the 2014 Palermo Show, and his popular son Roosmo

Matias Star who earned third best bull overall in 2014. Jimmy and Selena McGuire of South River Genetics, Shawnee, Okla., purchased the flush of the Argentine females for $35,000. “The deciding factor for me was meeting Héctor Mario at the Revival and seeing the excitement he has about his Shorthorn cattle,” said Jimmy McGuire. The Oklahoma couple chose to share in the flush of both females with Little Cedar and Cabaña Santa Cecilia, which will be performed in Argentina in late 2014 or early 2015. It has been Eyherabide’s lifelong dream to breed the perfect Shorthorn bull. Continuously working to improve both genotypic value and phenotypic appeal have made Cabaña Santa Cecilia a paternal production powerhouse across Argentina and other parts of South America. “You can’t find Shorthorn bulls like his in the United States,” said Steve French. “They’re bigfooted, masculine bulls that have a lot of natural thickness, and incredible feed efficiency. You hear everyone say how good the Argentine cattle are, but until you get down there and see them with your own two eyes, you don’t realize how impressive they are.” Producers who witnessed the offering at the Revival sale heard the breeders’ goal to potentially strengthen the foundation of the Shorthorn breed in the U.S. with a new, proven genetic line. One breeder on hand for the auction of was Mike Bennett, American Shorthorn Association president, from California. “What they are doing with the Shorthorn breed down there has a real place in improving the genetics and the

performance of cattle here in the United States,” said Bennett. “The plan to share their genetics is exciting and shows the progressiveness of not only Héctor Mario and his son Francisco, but also people like Steve and Julie, who went there and recognized what their cattle have to offer. I am looking forward to big things from this exchange.” The future of Argentine Shorthorn genetics in the United States is powered not only by the tried-and-true success of real world Argentine cattle, but also by the individuals working to share those genetics with American cattle producers. “There is also a strong desire among breeders in our country to create a Shorthorn bull that will satisfy our commercial market,” continued French. “If we can get a great Shorthorn bull out of one of the flushes we intend to make his genetics affordable and available to anyone who wants to use him. This one step will bring Hector Mario’s dream of ‘Toro Perfecto’ completely full circle.” Speaking of his Shorthorn genetics partnership with Steve and Julie French, that now includes Jimmy and Selena McGuire, Héctor Mario Eyherabide said, “Life has brought us together because I think we have the same dreams, the same imagination and the same creativity itself.” The innovative breeding project that the breeders from Argentina, Michigan and Oklahoma are embarking on leaves no doubt that the Shorthorn breed of tomorrow has an incredibly bright future, across all borders. =

=Junior Corner Dream Big As I round out my last year on Junior Board, I can do nothing, but smile. I think of all the opportunities that Junior Board has provided me with and I can only hope that everyone takes the chance to try and experience it for themselves. I have met multiple breed producers and developed many relationships because of this given opportunity, and it’s something I will always keep close to my heart. This experience has also provided me with friendships that I can connect with on many different levels because I share so much more of the same interests. My biggest fear when running for the Junior Board was never making the board, but then I thought to myself, “If I don’t try now … then how will I ever know what was to become of it?” I think that’s everyone’s biggest fear… denial. The worst thing, when all is considered, is that you never gave yourself the shot and you must always live with not knowing your own success. So why not just give yourself the chance? In my first article for the Shorthorn Country I wrote, “If your dreams don’t scare you, then they’re not

big enough” (Ellen Johnson Sirleaf ). This quote couldn’t be truer. The scariest things in life are meant to be scary because it is what pushes you outside of your limits. You are testing yourself to bigger experiences, but that is how one grows as an individual. I know we may talk a lot about how amazing Jr. Board is and that everyone should try and run for Jr. Board, but we continue to do so because it truly is an amazing experience. I hope that people not only see us represent those words by speaking, but also by our actions. To be honest I thought the Junior Board was going to be easy and fun, but let me just say I was wrong. There may have been endless phone calls, or what I feel like is endless, for donations and countless hours spent in the show ring, but I think those times where the most rewarding; they were the times where you really saw the breed as a whole step forward. All of this hard work couldn’t be done without the donations everyone puts forward, and the Junior. Board couldn’t begin to thank you enough. I would like to thank my grandparents and parents for

Brooke ajsa Pearson director

the support throughout the Junior Board process. They were always my biggest cheer section, and always helped out with the cattle when I couldn’t be around to take care of things myself. I would also like to thank Gwen for being the motivator to all of us Junior Board members. I know some days would be rough and exhausting, but she would be right by our side to keep us going; she only wants the best from everyone and she always somehow magically manages to pull it out of all us. I can’t even begin to be grateful enough for all the new friendships I have made through Junior Board either. These new friendships are ones I will never forget and will be able to hold onto for a lifetime. Thank you everyone for letting me serve as a representative for the Junior Board for the past three years, and I hope that if you were thinking about running that I’ve shed some light on really pushing forward with it. What do you have to lose? =
