DESIGN SCHOOL KOLDING Design School Kolding is a recognized member of the Cumulus international network of top design schools and ranks as one of Europe’s leading academies of design. The school has university status and trains designers at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels within Industrial Design, Communication Design, Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design, and Design for Play. We also offer an MA programme in Design Management in collaboration with the University of Southern Denmark.

“ So, you could call me optimis-

tic and hopeful and probably just a little bit naïve, but I’m coming from the space that the best way to predict the future is to get out there and just do it yourself. John Elkington

Our main strategic focal areas are Social Inclusion, Sustainability, and Play. Within these areas we provide practical examples of how design can be used as an aesthetic and strategic tool in the change process in which society, industry and democracy find themselves. 2015-2018 we have dedicated our annual international DesignCamp to exploring these areas further. We do so in collaboration with the Danish design cluster D2i – Design to innovate. INTERNATIONAL DESIGN CAMP Since 2009, the international DesignCamp is an annual, recurring event at Design School Kolding. For two weeks, the camp joins Danish and international students, public and private companies, designers, researchers and others with an interest in design in addressing global challenges and solving common issues. An open conference, real cases, and an intense design process that includes research, ideation, prototyping, testing and measuring result in concrete design concepts that are ready to be taken to the next level.

THE DESIGNCAMP2017 - SUSTAINABLE ACTION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP The aim of DesignCamp2017 // To question the meaning of life on a small and large scale. // To become DOers and to confront the challenges that face the world in terms of social inclusion, climate/environmental challenges, and economic growth. DesignCamp2017 centred on sustainable change and the way in which we as humans can transform our individual and collective lives within a city, an institution, a company, indeed the world. The world is facing massive challenges, yet also possibilities to create sustainable solutions. With the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Goals, sustainable solutions and having a holistic, international approach to design practice is becoming a premise rather than an option. We moved the Laboratory for Sustainability and DesignCamp2017 into the city of Kolding. A city with 57,000 people, institutions and companies that can be mirrored in cities around the world. Working specifically with one city, we wanted to create real design solutions that are scalable and create solutions to meet the world’s collective sustainable challenges. Using the city of Kolding as our “scene of action”, we worked with sustainable models and experiments within the public and private sectors. For two weeks, 50 students worked in cross-disciplinary teams on 13 different projects creating sustainable prosperity. The results were specific products, changes of existing habits and mindsets, and new ways of communicating sustainable practices of living, eating, learning

3

and transporting oneself. All of the projects were identified and completed in partnership with private or public companies from the city of Kolding and took their starting point in their challenges and opportunities related to creating a sustainable future. The partners attended start-up meetings, a one-day conference, presentations, and had several work meetings with the students during research, observations and prototyping tests. DesignCamp2017 gave the students an understanding of the importance of not only creating ideas but also creating actions. This allowed them to see how they might advance sustainable design solutions through user observations rather than keeping only prejudiced or personal perspectives and ideas as a turning point within a project. Based on current observations and future scenarios addressing global sustainable challenges, the students created specific projects that activated meaningful sustainable changes with user focus as a given precondition. We hope this publication will inspire and motivate to concrete sustainable actions towards environmental, economic and social justice.

HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES //A game for 3-5-year-olds that transforms sorting of waste from a dull activity into a physical and playful game. // Creating consumer awareness about the potential food waste related to each trip to the supermarket. Not as a finger-wagging but by translating the food waste into saved money. // Design of one or more project days for 10th grade municipal primary and lower secondary school where pupils and teachers create solutions to current sustainable challenges. They ”travel” into the future, look at the past – our present – and through dialogue and choices it becomes clear and explicit what they need to change in order to create a common sustainable future.

6C MODEL As a framework for the design work during DesignCamp2017, the students and partners worked with The 6C model; a design process model developed by Associate Professor, PhD, Silje Kamille Friis. With a development-oriented aim, which positions human beings at the centre, the model emphasises the need for a profound understanding of the surrounding world and the context for which the students are designing, the need to be creative and experimental when they design new initiatives, and the need to communicate their work, knowledge and results in a manner that is accommodating, accessible and application-oriented. // Collaborate: Identification of stakeholders and knowledge sharing. // Collect: To wonder and explore using various design methods to collect information on partners, stakeholders and users. // Comprehend: Analysis of the collected material as well as insights from conversations and workshops. Description of identified spaces of opportunities within the context of collaborative partners. // Conceptualize: Drafting, prototypes and tests in collaboration with the external partners. Identification of meaningful sustainable solutions. // Create: The final solutions are presented to the collaborative partners.

DESIGNCAMP CONFERENCE ON CREATING SUSTAINABLE ACTION “We need to consume less, consume smarter and designers to help us.” Spoken by Mikael Bellers Madsen from the Danish think tank Concito at the DesignCamp conference. The oneday conference offered many equally relevant points about sustainability and how to create actions today by interesting people: Karen Blincoe from the “doing tank” Chora Connection that works with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Maria Vase Petersen and Marc Sejr Eggesen from NorthSide Festival partner WorldPerfect, a sustainability consultancy, and Jeppe Vestergaard who is creating economic, social and green value with Værdicentralen – Renosyd’s reuse shop. We asked all of the speakers to share three pieces of advice for companies and public institutions that want to start working with sustainability. So here you go:

The public spends approx. 310 billion DKK per year on procurement of all sorts of goods. Sustainability in terms of reuse, biological degradable resources, etc. needs to be included as an important criterion when tendering among procurement companies delivering to the authorities. That will also inspire private citizens’ own private consumption habits.

need a much closer cooperation between public author#2 We ities and private companies. Example: In Malmoe Municipality, the authorities are facilitating a cooperation between foodstores/supermarkets with surplus foods and companies who may need this “old food” for other purposes, e.g. animal feed. This will reduce food waste. business models. The public should explore new ways #3 New of using resources more efficiently by experimenting with innovative models. When establishing new city areas several cities around Europe offer fewer parking places, but at the same time make arrangements with sharecar companies so that the new inhabitants have a common access to such cars. Private/public housing companies increasingly establish shared tool/machinery facilities. The authorities themselves should explore new ways for private citizens to use public resources when not in use, such as cars, buildings – perhaps in cooperation with private companies. 15

However, the UN states, that when it comes to the area of sustainable production and consumption (SDG no.12), we have massive problems. Get everybody on board first! If you hope to work with sustainability in your company, organisation, or public institution, you have to get every colleague of yours committed to the cause. Involve them as much as possible and make sure everybody has a sense of ownership in this project. You need them! Going at it alone does not bring about the best results; you need different perspectives and diversity to end up with better solutions. Furthermore, not proactively handling any reluctance or resistance from even a few individuals can become detrimental to your work; then not even the following two pieces of advice will help you. But having dedicated ‘partners in crime’ will help you reach amazing heights!

at it step by step! #2 Go A necessary part of working with sustainability is accepting that it is almost always impossible to go fully sustainable at once. Especially if you have to convince other stakeholders to get on board, such as your colleagues or suppliers. Therefore, choose a starting point and set ambitious but realistic goals for your first steps. The more you work with sustainability, the more you learn about its complexity and will be able to spot potential road blocks in advance. Do not let setbacks or mistakes deter you; the complexity makes it hard to be right all the time, and using the ‘trial and error’ is perfectly fine. Often people start with low-hanging fruits that are easy to change and will bring about the first meaningful impact. 19

yourself a framework to work in! #3 Give It can be hard to know where to start, and it can be hard to remember all the different areas you need to work on to become more sustainable in your behaviour and company/ organisation. Giving yourself a framework of some kind to work in helps put your efforts into order and make something intangible very tangible. The Aarhus Sustainability Model (ASM) can work as one such framework with four overall sections and many sub-areas. However, it is important to not blindly choose all sections and areas of such a framework and force them into your work. Consider your own context and pick the ones that are most important and relevant to you! To sum up: It’s all about 1) moving the whole organisation, 2) taking it step by step, and 3) using a framework (like ASM)! HOW MIGHT WE How might we motivate commuters to share a ride while giving Kolding it’s own mobility culture?

GROUP Silvio Skarwan Alexander Raffl Harriet Alderson loana Ispas

PARTNER Kolding Kommune/Kolding Municipality What are our intentions? Traffic. It’s a necessary evil on our daily way to work or to our study place. Everybody knows the stress that comes with the effort we put in to avoid the metallic avalanche that is rolling towards cities in the morning. Getting caught by it means less time, problems finding a parking spot and a perfect start into an already bad day. But what if we could make the journey to work less painful? What if we could transform our daily experience into something more pleasurable by taking some of this stress from our shoulders? Fact is that 30% of city traffic consists of people looking for parking which takes an average of 20 minutes seen on a global scale. We asked ourselves what we can do in order to reduce the amount of traffic and the struggle of finding a parking spot. This is were TAKxi comes in. TAKxi brings people together that work in the same companies or institutions by offering a digital service that helps finding possible rides. Building on already existing concepts like “GoMore” we expanded the experience by

23

adding special parking zones to institutions that use TAKxi. By doing so we can offer free and ensured parking spaces for people that share a ride. Simply find a partner, agree on a time, place to meet and, drive to your destination knowing that a prime parking spot is already waiting. The only thing left when arriving there is to say – thanks for the ride.

HOW MIGHT WE MOTIVATE COMMUTERS TO SHARE A RIDE WHILE GIVING KOLDING IT’S OWN MOBILITY CULTURE?

Jan wants to find a ride to uni the next day using TAKxi. He logs into our app and searches for a ride from Aarhus to Kolding at 8am. He finds a ride with Agnes and sends a request. Agnes accepts and they confirm the pick up point for the next day. Next morning, Agnes picks up Jan and they drive to university together. Both are happy to be saving on travel costs and feel assured that a free parking space is reserved for them.

x

They arrive at uni and drive straight to the reserved space in the TAKxi parking zone. They are on time for their classes and start into a good day!

i What we were working on is solving the problem of traffic congestions by developing a service that brings commuters from the same companies together to reduce traffic. We are doing this by building on the concept of existing car

Why don’t you easily grab this one and successfully make it to your workplace. Most of the used bikes are lady bikes - 70% - and a broad range of used children’s bikes can be found out there due to fact of children growing. We decided to combine these two types of bikes into one new kind of bike model which answers to the specific needs of convenient transportation. This bike is optimal for the easy-going citizen who values space and comfort in his or her bike. Small children’s bike frame gives easy access to hop on to the bike without losing the better riding qualities of a bigger ladybike. There are basic tools in the app like the citymap with overview of available bikes, the login and, the booking. But to extend it even more we want to put a focus on the social part of it. This would start with recording your tracks and, how much of CO2 emissions you would save when biking. By sharing this information you are getting part of a movement creating positive impact. HOW MIGHT WE How might we make a sustainable store-in-store concept for public and professional costumers by making it easy, sexy and, inspiring to use recycled material?

GROUP Lea Mose Svendsen Jerry Estié Cornelia Oczycz Wasif Hussain

PARTNER Kolding Kommune/Kolding Municipality We were asked by the Kolding Municipality to find a solution for the re-use of construction material waste. This is a 3 year-long project in collaboration with the European Union.

For the store a white and clear background and environment will draw the visitor‘s attention to what matters: beautiful material presented in a unique way.

We are creating a store-in-store concept selling old construction material in the already established building supply stores like Stark for private and professional costumers. It‘s important that professionals are convinced that this is a viable business solution. This store-instore makes it easy, hip and inspiring to use recycled material.

The material is presented in a clean environment requesting more respect and attention from a potential buyer. This is how we think the upcycled materials can be shown, combined with examples by architects/designers etc. on how the material can be used.

The store-in-store will have a clean and modern aesthetic. By working together with architects and designers we will showcase the use of sustainable material in a new and exciting way. There will be competitions and exhibitions for established architects, designers and design students. In short; this store will be a showroom showcasing the materials and, the way they can be used.

We are showcasing the personal objects together with a short story explaining the owner’s emotional attachment. By using a golden touch as a key element in the fixed objects, we are expressing the added value given by repairing it. The purpose of the campaign is to get people think about how proud they would be, if they could add value to their broken belongings. In local learning communities in Japan broken objects are often repaired with gold. The flaw is seen as a unique piece of the object’s history, which adds to it’s beauty. THE CHALLENGE Learning

HOW MIGHT WE How might we create awareness about sustainability during the cross-disciplinary theme days for students and teachers by creating a simulated world and using gamification elements?

Teachers and students are split into groups and receive missions that they have to solve within two days. Each mission consist of three parts (levels) and provides various clue cards. In order to create a realistic environment of a future scenario where there no longer is electricity, clean water or any of the beneficial items we have today, water, food or any electronics devices are not allowed during the theme days. After taking over the whole school’s areas and removing all items, it is possible to see a future without anything, only waste from the previous generations. How will the pupils start their own society and build up living from scratch? In the whole environment there will be hidden clue cards that help solve the missions regarding various sustainability challenges. Each level of the game provides clue cards at different complexities. After finding the clue card and discussing it with the team, one person is allowed to “go back in time” and research on the topic that the clue provided. An option “to go back in time” and find information helps participants figure out what could have gone wrong, for example, what is the role of clothing industry

By offering cookery lessons to foreign students of the Language School of Kolding, MAD COOKING aims to train students to speak Danish in their spare time. In a casual way, the students will be able to spend 3 hours, twice a week in a furnished apartment, where the good humor and the desire to learn is at its height. Moreover, all the food used for the lessons will come from local producers, to sensitize students to a sustainable spirit. It is also offered to producers to come and present their products themselves, and thus exchange knowledge with the most curious students. In order to help the students in their learning, the cooking courses will be mainly in Danish. But they will be assisted by a recipe including the translation and all the necessary indications for understanding.

However MAD COOKING is more than just cooking lessons. It will make you improve your cooking skills, your Danish, your knowledge about Danish life, Kolding and its surroundings, and mostly sharing with each others. Of course, at the end of the lesson, everyone eats together around a large table. Finally, each student will have a fidelity card, allowing him to earn a few bags of food from ecological and sustainable agriculture.

PLANT A SEED Learning

HOW MIGHT WE How might we create a physical board game, that inspires kids to a sustainable lifestyle in a playful and visual way?

GROUP Shamir Khan Daniel Broner Lise Cognard

PARTNER Børnehaven Løvetand/Kindergarten Løvetand The mission is to metaphorically plant a seed in the minds of the kids, by playing a game, having fun and, teaching them about sustainability without text and, by using their bodies. In that way they will learn between right and wrong, how to sort trash, take care of the nature and environment. This will improve their knowledge from an early stage and hopefully, when growing up, they can pass it on to the next generation.

HOW MIGHT WE CREATE A PHYSICAL BOARD GAME, THAT INSPIRE KIDS INTO A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE IN A PLAYFUL AND VISUAL WAY?

Dystopia is a human scale board game (4m x 4m), which teaches kids (3-6 years) about sustainability in a fun way. As the children roll the dice, they have to the solve the recycle problem with the color that appears on the dice, resulting in the final image of a happy Earth being revealed. The mission of the game is to turn dystopia into an eutopia by solving one problem at a time.

THE MISSION IS, TO METAPHORICALLY PLANT A SEED IN THE MINDS OF THE KIDS, BY PLAYING A GAME, HAVING FUN AND TEACH THEM ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY, WITHOUT TEXT AND BY USING THEIR BODY. THAT WAY THEY WILL LEARN BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG, HOW TO SORT TRASH AND TAKE CARE OF THE NATURE AND ENVIRONMENT.
