Life is a River…. I believe, life is like a river, and everyone has their own travel journey. For a while two boats can come close and travel a few miles together. But, because of their individual speed, destination, style of sailing they cannot be tied together. Perfect Group is a high-speed boat, which moves faster than others in areas of expansion, diversification and modernization. Most of the employees adjust to the dynamic changes and grow in the firm. Few decide to leave as they cannot adopt to a fast change. Employees who have stayed back and supported organizational change have gained great benefits including professional and personal growth including competitive salary, perks, insurance benefits, long-term bonuses and career growth opportunities. Life is like a river. People come and go. Boats may enter or go out of the river. But the river keeps flowing. We believe that the show must go on. So, friends be ready for a lot of surprises and exciting times with Prefect FunAsia Group. Osho says, it is wrong to think of life as a noun. It gives an impression of something static. Everything in life is a process, constantly moving or flowing. Nouns should be referred as verbs. Life as living, River as revering, Trees as treeing and Flowers as flowering. It is a constant movement. It is our incapability as humans not to see this whole process of exitance, hence we use noun. Friends, FunAsia is not a noun but a living fun. It is a constant endeavor to bring communities together and a constant process to bring fun into everyone’s life.

lywood or set the book closer home, which she knows so well, Twinkle replies, “Bollywood is boring to me. I don’t write about it in my columns or shot stories, I don’t find it interesting. I have seen it and why would I write about it. It is too familiar.” She goes on to says, “I have worn hideous costumes, I have said terrible lines. I have danced and done all the pelvic thrusts. But I learnt how to laugh at myself and I think that is one of the reasons why I am here. Now I hope people will forget Mela and remember me for my books.” Having been called a tomboy, she recalls, “I had a mustache, I didn’t use lipstick till I acted in movies. A lot of people told me that I talk like a man, I think like a man and I really thought that there is some man trapped inside my body. But it wasn’t like that. I realised soon that my perception didn’t have a gender. As Virginia Woolf says, ‘An androgynous mind is a incandescent mind’.” On her views on feminism, Twinkle says, “I think we keep telling women

hen Twinkle Khanna decided to pick up her pen at the age of 38, she had finally found her calling. But having come from a time when films like Mela were being made and words like sexism and gender equality were confined to social study classes, she seems to have gracefully adapted to the time of #metoo and raging public debates around feminism. Talking about the past, she says, “I don’t look back.” While ‘Mrs. Funnybones’ has emerged out of the actor much later in life, there was no doubt about her being a ‘misfit’, as she calls herself. For someone who had also harboured a dream to be a charted accountant, and had been pushed into Bollywood, she says, “I was always a misfit. I would be knitting on the sets of my films or reading. My grandmother taught me how to knit and ours was a nice hippie household. Someone was always reading, or knitting or playing the guitar.” But it didn’t seem like a fitting thing for an actor to do back then. “ I was never interested in fitting in,” she tells the audience at the event organised by YFLO Delhi.

It is this very attitude that has transformed the actor into a much adored author and columnist today. In the capital to promote her recent book,Pyjamas are Forgiving, the actor says, “The pajama is a metaphor. It is very nice to be accommodating like pajamas are, but sometimes as women we let our drawstrings too loose and before we know it we are standing in out underwear.” The book taps on the importance of consent and is in a way a ‘Metoo book’. Twinkle says, “Consent has been ambiguous. Even five years ago, a man wouldn’t stop. He would try regardless. That has changed and it has not only affected women. to speak up and be more independent. But you have to tow the line of the hand that writes the cheque. That I think, is the biggest problem. So economic independence is the primary thing for women to be fearless.” With her strong opinions, Twinkle also has to handle her share of trolls. “But I have a think skin because I have the biggest troll at home - my mother,” she laughs. She says she won’t ever write a book about herself, “I won’t do that because it would be all lies. All that you can find about me is in these books, in fiction,” she signs off.

Ali Fazal: AS AN ACTOR TODAY, ALI FAZAL SAYS ONE NEEDS TO BE DIVERSE IN TALENT
F
urious 7” and “Victoria & Abdul” gave Ali Fazal a thrust into the world of international cinema. The actor, who had first starred in American TV series “Bollywood Hero” in 2009, says he wants to be a part of the diversity wave that is now taking Hollywood by storm.
“Furious 7” saw him in a bit role, but the British drama “Victoria & Abdul” saw him play the lead one with veteran actor Judi Dench. What next? “I can’t talk about what is exactly next, but there are two projects that I am on board for. One is a biopic, a true story again,” Ali told IANS, adding that “Victoria & Abdul” has not just opened up doors for him internationally, but in India too. ”It’s weird how that works, but we have always looked up to Hollywood, so one person goes and suddenly they... Anyway,” the actor, stopping abruptly only to add: “I am very hopeful. I am very happy with the decisions I have made.” “I have given up some big network TV shows very recently because even if it is Hollywood, it has to be the right stuff. As an Indian going there, you’re always scared of getting stereotyped.
22
| DFW | October 2018
I have seen that happen before,” he said during a recent chat in Melbourne during a film festival. He believes the castings are opening up now. “The diversity is happening in Hollywood and I want to be a part of it. It’s a really exciting time for everybody, not just actors,” added Ali, who is optimistic about the kind of content the web series space has brought along. “It’s not Amazon’s answer to (Netflix’s) ‘Sacred Games’... It has to be the answer...The people will decide,” Ali said of the show, which he feels will stand out due to its outstanding cast and gripping story. There’s Pankaj Tripathi, Shweta Tripathi, Vikrant Massey, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rasika Dugal among others. “It’s a plethora of great actors and at the same time it’s good writing. It was such layered writing, and to give some Hollywood films as references to give an idea, it’s a mix of ‘Narcos’ and ‘Godfather’ in the Indian context,” said Ali, whose most recent screen appearances were in “Fukrey Returns” and “Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi”. His upcoming slate of Bollywood films include the Hindi remake of the Telugu “Prasthaanam” and Tigmanshu Dhulia’s “Milan Talkies” -- both set in Uttar Pradesh. Filmmaking is also something that is on Ali’s mind. He is penning a short film, which he calls an ode to his inspiration -- the multifaceted Guru Dutt -- and will direct it too. “I am not just acting, I am also writing, I am also going the direction way... If nothing, then I am able to put my own stuff out there because I can... I don’t have to depend on others. What about going the production way? “Why not? That’s the end game. Earlier, actors used to be on this pedestal that ‘bas wohi hain (that they are just actors)... I love acting and I will never leave that, but I want that rush to create something, and be a director.” DesiPages

ctor Yami Gautam, who stars in Batti Gul Meter Chalu, says it is neither necessary nor possible for an actor to do issue-based films all the time. Yami was interacting with the media here on Wednesday at a promotional press conference of the film that releases on Friday. She was at the event with her co-actors Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. On the trend in Bollywood where films have been putting out a message, Yami was asked whether it was a safe bet as it was working for many actors. She said: “I debuted with Vicky Donor, which was an amalgamation of something very new (a subject of sperm donation) and yet it was entertaining. But all the time, it is not necessary and possible to present a message and entertainment

When the audience will see this film, they will realise the gravity of this issue because normally we discuss it and then we move on, but I think cinema is such a strong medium which enables people to start a dialogue among themselves. In future also, I would love to be part of such issue-based films.” On the same, Shraddha
said: “I think sometimes you become a part of the film where you only get intrigued by the story of the film and not the message which it gives to the audience. “I think if you are able to give an important message in an entertaining manner to the audience, then there is nothing like that because it brings to light an important issue of a country or a society, so cinema is really a good platform for that.” Batti Gul Meter Chalu is directed by Shree Narayan Singh and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Nishant Pitti and Krishan Kumar. Releasing on Friday, it tells the story of the electricity scarcity issue in rural and urban India.

AYUSHMANN KHURRANA
IS HAPPY TO ATTRACT STORIES LIKE “BADHAI HO”, ANDHADUN
A
ctor Ayushmann Khurrana says his latest Badhaai Ho will ignite curiosity and laughter in people as it revolves around an old couple becoming parents again. The comedy-drama features Ayushmann as the son of an elderly couple who find out they would be turning parents for the third time. “It is rare to see people of our parents’ age becoming parents again. This was a very normal thing back in the
‘70s and the ‘80s. So people might think that Badhaai Ho is ahead of it’s times but I think they’ll find it funny and interesting because this doesn’t happen today,” Ayushann told PTI.
“Had this been shown in a ‘70s film, people would’ve reacted normally. This is what makes Badhaai Ho so interesting. I am sure people will look forward to this and the response to the trailer has been amazing too,” he added. “Actors keep saying that they want to do something different so they look different to the audience but I believe people watch a film for it’s story and concept. If the story is different, you will also look different. The setting and the milieu of Badhaai Ho is very different than that of Vicky Donor and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, I am not speaking the same language as I spoke in those two films. My accent is different here,” he says. Badhaai Ho releases on October 19th internationally.
The actor made his film debut with 2012’s Vicky Donor where he played a sperm donor. Last year, he featured in Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, which revolved around erectile dysfunction. Ayushmann is amused that such stories end up coming to him but he isn’t complaining. “I don’t know why such scripts come to me but I just go for the interesting stories. Even Andhadhun, it is so different from anything I’ve done so far. I would like to continue attracting such stories,” he said. Directed by Amit Sharma, “Badhaai Ho” also features Sanya Malhotra and Neena Gupta. While Ayushmann has previously featured in comedies set in small towns, he says the treatment is different.

Rajkummar Rao:
Stardom Can Add Pressure On You
Rajkummar
Rajkummar Rao is on a golden run, especially since 2017, with his film garnering not only audience’s love but also box office points
Rao’s “Stree” has broken records and crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office but the actor says he does not think he has achieved a “star” status in Bollywood. The actor is on a golden run, especially since 2017, with his film garnering not only audience’s love but also box office points. “I just don’t think about stardom, I have never thought about it that way. I like working, I love my job, and that’s what I do. I can’t work under pressure, all these things can add pressure. For me, it is my job and I strive to do it in the best way possible,” Rajkummar told reporters. The actor was speaking at the success bash of “Stree” last night.
caught up in numbers game. “I don’t really think about the box office but I want my films to do well. I knew that we’ve made a good film. However, none of us expected the film to do so well at the box office, and that it is still running everywhere. It is definitely one of the most profitable films of the year,” he added. When asked about the status of the film’s sequel, the actor said, “Just wait for a couple of more months for more details on this. We are definitely looking at ‘Stree 2’. We should start shooting early next year.” Directed by Amar Kaushik, “Stree” also featured Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurrana, Abhishek Banerjee.
Rajkummar said he was humbled by the response the horror-comedy received, though he never gets

Avengers will now speak in Hindi as Infinity War re-releases on Oct 2; here’s what brings them back to India After breaking multiple records in India, Hollywood marvel, Avengers: Infinity War will re-release in the country in Hindi on October 2. An overwhelming response from Indian fans and an increasing following for the Hindi version of earlier releases is what made Disney return. It is not just Infinity War but Hollywood that is making a huge impact at the Indian box office. Hollywood films have started finding their groove in India after a long hiatus thanks to the recent successes. These films are not only seeing their base grow in the country but also posing as potential threats to their Bollywood counterparts. In fact, even before the release of Avengers: Infinity War, Amitabh Bachchan had expressed worry on the challenges that the local industry will face if the foreign movie sees a massive opening. And why is that? When it comes to fantasy films, superhero drama, science fiction, horror or the cinematic experience that these movies are providing, Indian films are yet no match for them. A growing number of moviegoers in India are lining up for Hollywood films because home-grown productions still need to master the art of making big screen spectacles. While Indian filmmakers are making effort toward this, example., Baahubali franchise, more such content is needed to compete with Hollywood. In addition, Hollywood is paying extra attention to the dubbed versions as they have a wider reach. Over last 2-3 years, nearly40 percent of English releases are dubbed in at least one local language, according to KPMG report titled ‘Re-imagining India’s M&E sector’. Good cinemat-

ic experience of Hollywood movies has been appreciated by audiences across different demographics in India. And this has led to an increase in the number of Hollywood movies being dubbed into regional languages. The Jungle Book had garnered more than half of the box office revenues from non-English versions. The dubbed contribution was a staggering 56 percent and English was 44 percent. For Infinity War, nearly 50 percent of the screen count was devoted to the dubbed versions including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu. The local language versions of Captain America: Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy managed to get 33 percent and 27 percent, respectively of the overall revenues.
wood grow its business. Last time when Avengers: Infinity War had come to India on April 27 this year, it made Rs 280 crore from all versions and took the title of highest grossing Hollywood film in India. Whether re-releasing in Hindi will hlep the film add a significant amount to its overall India business? Only time will tell.
As Hollywood is leaving no stone unturned to make audiences feel its presence in India, re-releasing a film is yet another strategy just like a preUS release that has helped Holly-

Immigration Updates: Premium processing suspension and consequences
AHLUWALIA LAW OFFICES, P.C. (972) 361-0606 14180 DALLAS PARKWAY SUITE 720 DALLAS, TX 75254
Beginning September 11, 2018, USCIS has extended and expanded suspension of premium processing for certain H-1B petitions. The suspension will affect all H-1B petitions filed at the Vermont Service Center and California Service Center with few exceptions. Despite the positive notions for this suspension, the premium processing suspension will have harsher consequences on the H-1B program. The H-1B CAP applicants picked up in the lottery for the fiscal year 2019 will have to wait till their H-1B is approved, unless they receive an approval on or prior to October 1, 2018. Also, the students working with the employer under CAP GAP OPT will not be able continue to work beyond October 1, 2018 unless their petition for an extension and change of status request from F1 to H-1B is approved on or before October 1, 2018. Further, we routinely file H-1B amendment petitions for the beneficiaries whose worksite location changes. With the absence of premium processing, the beneficiary cannot join the new location till the approval comes in. This will discourage opportunities for both the employer from the business standpoint and the beneficiary from the opportunity standpoint. The beneficiary can change to the new employer after timely and proper filing of the H-1B petition. But with the new Policy Memorandum, dated July 13, 2018, in effect from September 11, 2018, the adjudicators can deny the application or petition without first issuing Request for Evidence or Notice of Intent to Deny. The beneficiaries are therefore dismayed from changing the employer. They may not take the risk of leaving the job and join a new employer without first getting an approval. Hence, the suspension of premium processing along with the new Policy Memorandum will make matters bad to worst. We request our readers to be cautious and be diligent with their legal status and take legal opinion when in doubt. From Korea to Poland, Indian Films Find New Markets THE MOVE TO OVERSEAS TERRITORIES MAY NOT BE NEW FOR INDIAN CINEMA, BUT THE LEAP TO NON-TRADITIONAL MARKETS THAT ARE NOT HOME TO A LARGE INDIAN DIASPORA IS NEW
T
he move to overseas territories may not be new for Indian cinema, but the leap to non-traditional markets that are not home to a large Indian diaspora is new New Delhi: Indian movies are heading out—to unfamiliar foreign shores. In September, Yash Raj Films will take its critically acclaimed comedy drama Hichki to Russia and Kazakhstan, while upcoming Tamil action comedy Seema Raja heads for a release in Poland. This month saw Eros International release its 2015 blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijaan in Turkey after having taken two films last year, Munna Michael and Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, to Russia. The move to overseas territories may not be new for Indian cinema, but the leap to non-traditional markets that are not home to a large Indian diaspora is new. More than anything else, industry

experts say it has to do with the fact that Indian cinema, including Bollywood films, has come of age in a global market that is waking up to its distinctiveness. “Bollywood has now become the buzzword, it has its own space, like Hollywood,” said Pranab Kapadia, president, marketing and distribution, Eros International Plc. Apart from China, which is a wellknown new market, countries such as Russia, Turkey, Taiwan, South Korea, Germany, Poland, Portugal and France are opening up to Indian cinema, with filmmakers also knocking on the doors of Latin America. “That has happened because we’ve stuck to our own identity and not just followed the Hollywood formula but remained drastically different in our narrative,” Kapadia said. “Across all countries, the one feedback has been on the emotional quotient, family values
and the song-and-dance format our films bring. There is enough of the Bahubali type of content that Hollywood is already making and we can’t compete with their special effects or action. It is those films, which are different from Hollywood, which are succeeding.” Film distributor Yusuf Shaikh said the digital universe has improved visibility for Indian films. Plus, the internet has made things a lot easier for businessmen, as it is now possible to send digital prints of films to prospective investors and gain feedback on how to tweak or customize content to suit local tastes. For Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Eros partnered with a Turkish company, Filmarti, while Seema Raja has been acquired by 7th Sense Cinematics in Poland.

ABHISHEK BACHCHAN Will Not Do Any Film That Will Make Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan has opened up about his daughter Aaradya Bachchan and has also revealed that going forward, he will only do films that will not make his daughter awkward while watching.
AARADHYA Feel AWKWARD Watching!
72
T
here’s no denying that Bollywood actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are doting parents to their little one Aaradhya Bachchan. From accompanying her mom to her work trips to making sure she’s protected by her mom and dad, Aaradhya is indeed a munchkin. Abhishek, who has recently made his comeback with Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan, co-starring Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal in key roles, has decided that going forward, his work decisions will be determined by his daughter. He has said that he will only choose projects that won’t make Aaradhya awkward while watching. News agency PTI has quoted him as saying, “I will now choose whatever work I do in professional career based on Aaradhya. I would not personally, currently, like to make a film which I feel Aaradhya would feel awkward watching.” The actor also shared that he, along with Aishwarya, has decided that they won’t pressure Aaradhya on choosing a particular profession and whatever she chooses to do, they will stand by her. He has been quoted as saying, “As far as Aishwarya and I are concerned, be it tomorrow, twenty years down the line or whenever, whatever she decides, we will support her no matter what. That’s what our parents did for us as well.”
| DFW | October 2018
The actor was speaking at an event in Mumbai when he said, “As a parent you want the best for your child. What she decides to do is completely her choice. We will never weigh down on her, that this is what we expect you to do. We would be proud of her regardless of what she becomes.” Given that Abhishek hails from one of Indian cinema’s most respected families – the Bachchans and is son to Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan – it’s evident that he understands the pressure it entails. And going by his decisions, it seems the duo doesn’t want their daughter to feel even a bit of it. On the work front, while Aishwarya was last seen in Fanney Khan alongside Rajkummar Rao and Anil Kapoor in key roles, Abhishek’s Manmarziyaan is currently running in theatres.

She is successfully making her mark in the digital entertainment space using the OTT (Over The Top) platforms. Since Ekta is known for making drama and supernatural shows on TV which is quite opposite of her shows on the OTT platform ALT Balaji and films where she is experimenting with many progressive subjects of the society, she said, “Experiences changed over time, so films have to change based on that. BREAKING NEWS
F.I.R. AGAINST SALMAN KHAN An FIR has been filedon Bihar court order, against Salman Khan, Aayush Sharma, Warina Hussain, Abhiram Minawala, Ram Kapoor and Ronit Roy for the title of the film Loveyatri, which was earlier called Loveratri.
A
n FIR was lodged here Friday against Bollywood actor Salman Khan and others associated with his upcoming home production Loveratri, the title of which was changed to Loveyatri a few days ago. The case was lodged at the Mithanpura police station here in pursuance of an order passed by Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (East) Shailendra Rai on September 12. The court had passed the order on the complaint of an advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha who had alleged that the title of the movie made fun of the holy festival of Navaratri. He had also alleged that the promos of the movie suggested that it contained vulgarity and could hurt sentiments. Salman Khan, who is producing the movie slated for release on October 5, had announced on Twitter a few days ago that the movie’s title has been changed from Loveratri to Loveyatri. Besides Salman, those named in the FIR are lead pair Aayush Sharma and Warina Hussain, director Abhiram Minawala and character artistes Ram Kapoor and Ronit Roy, Mithanpura SHO Vijay Rai said.

BOX OFFICE COLLECTION DAY 1 NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI FILM EARNS RS 50 LAKH
MANTO
Manto box office collection Day 1: Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role, Manto is based on the life of Indo-Pakistani iconoclast writer Saadat Hasan Manto. It opened at Rs 50 lakh on Friday.

N
andita Das directorial Manto opened at Rs 50 lakh, according to Bollywood Hungama. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role, Manto is based on the life of Indo-Pakistani iconoclast writer Saadat Hasan Manto. This is Das’ second feature film directorial after 2008’s Firaaq. Manto, also starring Tahir Raj Bhasin, Rasika Dugal and Rajshri Deshpande, premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Manto released alongside Batti Gul Meter Chalu, which has notable stars in its cast like Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam. Manto will have to generate considerable post-release buzz to stay in the race, since Batti Gul Meter Chalu has opened well. While Nawazuddin has become a respected name in the Hindi cinema, his capacity to lure moviegoers to the theatres remains limited. The Indian Express film critic Shubra Gupta gave a mixed review to the film. She concluded it by saying, “There is a gap, a curious distance, between the vision and the execution, and much of the film, including Nawaz, resides in it. There is no other actor who could have done this role; he looks the part—crumpled kurta, thick-framed glasses, stained teeth, and sounds just right too. The wry humour, the bitterness and frustration, qualities which permeate the author’s work, are only visible in flashes, though. The outline is there, but the filling is patchy. You keep wanting more. Both from him. And the film.”

KAJOL: SRK, Aditya or me cannot take credit for DDLJ’s success Helicopter Eela actor Kajol says Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge became a phenomenon because the audience appreciated it and took it to another level altogether.
A
ctor Kajol, who will be seen next in Helicopter Eela, has said that neither her co-star Shah Rukh Khan, nor director Aditya Chopra or she can take credit for the success of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, one of the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema. When asked whether a remake of that film was possible, Kajol said: “I think that film cannot be remade. Even at that time we never knew that whether what we had made was a good film or a bad one. I honestly feel that we just worked on that film and released it. But the phenomenon which has been created around it was all because the audience appreciated it and took it to another level altogether.” She said, “I have met people who got married after watching that film and they are passing on that film to their next generation. So, none of us whether it’s Shah Rukh or Adi or Amrishji (Puri) or me can take credit for the success of that film.”
When asked whether she is like the Helicopter Eela character in real life, the actor said: “I would say I am 50 percent of Eela in real life. I agree that she is a bit over-the-top character but she really loves and takes care of her child. So in that sense, I am definitely 50 percent Eela. Most mothers around us pay extra attention to their child like a helicopter constantly on their head that’s why we named the film Helicopter Eela.” Based on a Gujarati play titled Beta Kaagdo by Anand Gandhi, the story of Eela revolves around a single mother and an aspiring singer and her relationship with her son, played by the National Award-winning actor Riddhi Sen. The film is directed by Pradeep Sarkar, written by Mitesh Shah and co-produced by Ajay Devgn and Jayantilal Gada of Pen India Ltd.
In Helicopter Eela which is slated to release on October 12, Kajol plays a mother who constantly keeps a tab on her child’s life.

IN NANDITA DAS’
HAUNTINGLY MOVING FIRAAQ, FEAR RULES THE LANDSCAPE OF GUJARAT
S
irf saat suron mein itni kaabiliyat kahan ki aisi nafrat ka saamna kar sakein?” asks Naseeruddin Shah’s character at one point in Nandita Das’ Firaaq. Will the power of music stand a chance against all the hatred and violence? It is a rhetorical question. There’s a lot happening in Das’ directorial debut. We get a peek at the lives of a few characters following the 2002 Gujarat riots, and it is every bit as harrowing and complex as the real world. Hanif (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Muneera (Shahana Goswami) are returning to their home, to their burnt home. The past month they had been in hiding to escape the violence that had invaded the state following the outbreak of communal tension between Hindus and Muslims. While Hanif and his wife lament their material loss, in another part of the city, Khan Saheb (Naseeruddin Shah), a classical musician, refuses to acknowledge that fear and terror are taking over his hometown. Khan Saheb is an ailing old man who lives for his music. However, one fine day he confronts reality when he steps out of his home to visit someone, and that is perhaps one of the most
86
| DFW | October 2018
disturbing scenes of the movie. While returning home, Khan crosses an area that looks familiar because he remembers paying a visit to Wali’s shrine in the same locality. But the shrine is nowhere to be found. They burnt it, he is later informed. Nandita Das films Firaaq Wali Mohammed Wali or Wali Gujarati is widely considered the father of Urdu poetry. Naturally, Khan Saheb is perturbed and moved as he recounts the tales of numerous visits to Wali’s shrine. The destroyed shrine is not just an insult to the great poet or what he stood for, but to Khan Saheb, it is an insult to a memory he holds dear, it’s an insult to everything he holds sacred in a world he no longer understands. Then there is the young couple of Sameer Arshad Shaikh (Sanjay Suri) and Anuradha Desai (Tisca Chopra) whose store has been burnt because of the former’s religion. Sanjay Suri captures the anxiety and horror of an educated young man in a manner that is rooted in the fears of real people. There is a sequence where Sameer reveals his identity to an ignorant and a possibly dangerous cop while Anuradha beseeches him
to keep his silence. “That felt good,” Sameer says after the little altercation between himself and the cop following his identity reveal. To live in fear of your name, to carry that name that you are born with like a burden, what must it be like? You and I can only wonder, but that curiosity is quenched to a degree with Sanjay Suri’s portrayal of Sameer. firaaq Deepti Naval and Paresh Rawal, a married Gujarati couple, have their own weight to shoulder. Deepti’s character is trapped in an abusive marriage with a man who couldn’t care if the whole city burnt to cinders around him, while she is constantly traumatized by a memory of a woman she didn’t shelter due to her own fear and societal pressure. firaaq Firaaq is a haunting portrayal of Gujarat post the 2002 riots, which doesn’t let you catch a break for even a fraction of a second. And that’s good, because you are not meant to breathe, you are meant to absorb this anthology of ‘the quest’ in one go. There’s just no other way.

ROHIT SHETTY keen to make a biopic Rohit Shetty keen to make a biopic on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Rohit Shetty, one of the most successful commercial directors of the Hindi film industry, says love and acceptance of the audience motivates him to give his best to every project. Rohit Shetty, one of the most successful commercial directors of the Hindi film industry, says love and acceptance of the audience motivates him to give his best to every project. The director said his aim is to provide entertainment to the people and he wants them to enjoy his films, irrespective of what the critics are saying. “I think of audience, especially my family audience, while writing or making or editing a film. I want them to enjoy my films. I am more happy when audience is happy. When they are laughing and cheering.” “It gives me high and happiness. If a person goes to watch a film, he puts 10 per cent of his earning in it. So I should see to it that they are entertained. When audience is not happy, I feel restless,” Rohit told reporters here Friday at the Jagran Cinema Summit. The director said whenever his film releases, his team goes to the

I feel there has to be a reality check. I have a team who have been working with me for years and there is a emotional bond that we share. I consider and think over the suggestions that they give.” Also read | Rohit Shetty on Simmba and Zero release: We were coming on the same date earlier Rohit believes with time cinema has changed and a filmmaker should not be worried as to what works and what does not with the audiences. “Cinema was always changing and developing when Manmohan Desai was making Amar Akbar Anthony. There was Hrishikesh Mukherjee making Milli. Earlier it was commercial and parallel or art film and today it is multiplex kind of film. A good film is a good
film and a bad film is bad.” He also shared if he ever decides to make a biopic, it will be on Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. “If I ever have to make a film then it will be on Shivaji. It needs lot of money,” he said. Talking about trend of biopics in the film industry, Rohit added, “Trend keeps coming and changing and if the audience is liking it then there is no harm in making a film in that space.” The director believes that his frequent collaborator Ajay Devgn has a big role in his success as a filmmaker. Vicky Kaushal: Vicky Kaushal is basking in the glory of Lust Stories, Raazi, Sanju and now Manmarziyaan. Looking at the future, the actor is beaming with excitement to have landed Karan Johar’s next directorial feature, Takht. In 2015, Vicky Kaushal made his Bollywood debut with Masaan, which was first offered to Rajkummar Rao. Today, with back-to-back successes, Vicky is being hailed as the Rajkummar Rao of 2018. Vicky is basking in the glory of Lust Stories, Raazi, Sanju and now Manmarziyaan. And the actor can’t stop grinning ear to ear. “It feels very overwhelming. It’s not just for me, but for my entire family. They are in a very happy space right now. The films that I got to work on and them doing good and then people appreciating your work in it,” he tells indianexpress.com in an interview. “It is probably the best validation, the best compliment that when somebody says you are getting good things in life and you deserve this. I have had a journey where I have knocked at many doors and after all that journey, when people say you deserve to sit on this chair, that really feels good. It motivates you. It feels that if you get this after working hard then why not work harder? “This appreciation, love motivate me to do that. It just makes you smile for no reason. It’s a beautiful phase to be in. It’s a beautiful space to be in that in the middle of a walk, a meeting or eating, you start smiling. You are so overwhelmed with the love you are getting,” the actor says.
96
| DFW | October 2018
If stardom comes along with enviable perks, it also brings with it mammoth, nerve-wracking expectations from the audience and the industry who want you to keep the magic rolling. But for Vicky expectations are something he enjoys. “When you take this journey of becoming an actor, there are only destinations – one where people give you that limelight and expect the world from you, and two, they don’t know who you are and they don’t care what you are doing. You have to choose where you want to go. I have worked hard to reach here. I wanted them to expect good things from me. I wanted them to have an image of me. As the actor talks about his journey, Anurag Kashyap’s mention is inevitable. Much before his debut as a lead actor, Vicky assisted Anurag for a couple of years, including on Bombay Velvet in which he also had a cameo. “Anurag sir and I have had a beautiful journey as human beings. It’s been from him being my mentor to now being my buddy, I was scared when I thought I was working with my mentor. I am very much at ease when I know I am working with my buddy. That happened in a very organic way. It happened on Manmarziyaan.
“It could be because of the space that the film was in or the space that the character was in, where Anurag sir told me, ‘I would not limit you to anything. You just unleash and go berserk with this character because I know it’s inside you.’ I tried doing that and he was very happy. That somewhere led to this friendship,” he adds. Having been directed by him in three films, Vicky, perhaps, understands Anurag’s working process better than other actors. That he would give both his arm and leg to work with him again is because Anurag works on his actors in a subliminal manner. “He is very intimate with his actors. He is not someone who will hold the mic and say, ‘Arey, do like this or that.’ If there’s something, he will come up to you and say it in your ears. He never tells you how to perform. He talks about the thought process. ‘Think about this and then try to do this. Imagine this world and this has happened to you and now this is what you want,’ he tells you this way. “He wants to touch the deepest core of your heart. He doesn’t want just the surface level to improve. He asks you to draw references from who you are. That’s what brings all the change,”

KRITIKA KAMRA ‘I come with a baggage of TV roles’ Kritika Kamra on her first feature film, industry standards and why she loves her character
Kritika Kamra in Mitron, a film about friendship. What is Mitron about? The film is about friends. Friendship is the base of every relationship and that’s beautifully depicted in this film. It is set in Ahmedabad, there’s the new and the old. It takes you through the contradictions and the diversity of the city. It’s the story of a joint family, where the new and the old generation live together. Parents think that they know what’s best for their child, but children have their own dreams and ambitions. It’s the kind of film where one comes out of the cinema smiling. What character are you playing? My character Avni is a lot like me. She is a small-town, independent, ambitious girl, who knows what she wants and has worked hard for it. She has a brilliant business idea but her family is not ready to give her the investment she needs. Then comes this guy who is absolutely lazy and good-for-nothing but somehow they become really good friends and they start their own business. You have worked in TV and web shows previously. How do you feel about your first feature film? A lot rides on this film for me. It will determine the kind of work I get in the future. I want to work on films with good scripts. It’s harder for me because I come with a baggage of TV roles and I have to prove that I can do films too. I am really happy that I got to do this film and that’s because of Nitin Kakkar (director). In this industry women are not given powerful and independent roles, especially newcomers. So, I am glad I am playing more than just someone’s love interest. What are the challenges and demands of the big screen? It is definitely different from TV or digital in the amount of time spent in the film’s development, the preparation behind a character and how they approach the scenes. The beauty standards are quite high in this industry. Everything has to be glossy and perfect. Films also require a lot of networking, which I am not really good at. Is it a general perception in the industry that you are successful only if you are a film actor? I think the audience doesn’t feel this. The audience connects with the character, not to the people playing them. But, yes in the industry there is this perception that films are superior to television. I hope that changes for me after Mitron.

THUGS OF HINDOSTAN Thugs of Hindostan is based on the 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug but this is not the first film that explores the stories of this cult. Thugs of Hindostan is certainly one of the most awaited films of 2018 and with the release of the film’s logo and the short clip introducing Amitabh Bachchan’s character Khudabaksh, fans are certainly keen to know more .about the film Thugs of Hindostan is based on the 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug by Philip Meadows Taylor. The book is the based on the Thuggee cult that gained notoriety during the 18th century. But Thugs of Hindostan isn’t the first film that explores the stories of this cult Yesteryear icons Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar and Vyjayanthimala starred in a film called Sunghursh in 1968. It was based on a short Bengali story by legendary writer Mahasweta Devi, titled Layli Asmaner Ayna. Set in Varanasi, it depicted a fictionalised account of vendetta within a thuggee cult. The Deceivers that released in 1988 also explored the story of the same cult. The film starred Pierce Brosnan, Shashi Kapoor and Saeed Jaffery amongst others. The Deceivers was based on a book of the same name that was written by John Masters in 1952. Here,
104

Pierce Brosnan enters the cult to spy on them and finds himself being attracted to their ways. The film was met with harsh reviews. In the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Amrish Puri played the role of a priest who was a part of the Thuggee cult. British film The Stranglers of Bombay that released in 1959 explored the cult’s story from the point of view of the British East India Company. The Stranglers of Bombay starred Guy Rolfe and Jan Holden in pivotal roles. Italian film Kidnapped to Mystery Island was also based on the same cult. Directed by Luigi Capuano, the film was the story of a girl who is kidnapped by the cult and watches them make ritualistic sacrifices. Thugs of Hindostan is being projected like an epic and with YRF producing the film, we can assume that they will leave no stone unturned in making a visually stunning epic. With Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan in lead roles, this film is definitely the one to watch out for. DesiPages

Opinion: |
By Aliza Ali
HOW BOLLYWOOD MADE ME A HOPELESS ROMANTIC AND WHY THAT’S AMAZING. How Bollywood’s unnaturally high expectations of romance helped me develop my self-worth. I was recently dating someone who asked me if I was romantic. An image of Raj playing the violin for Megha briefly flashed in my mind. “You don’t grow up on Bollywood and not become romantic,” I replied. I’m not afraid to admit that the Bollywood romances I grew up have defined my idea of love. Romance is a lost art and many people in my generation are cynics about. But, there’s a niche community of us who are proud to scream their optimistic and hopeless views on love. So here I am, very clearly stating to all the readers that though I am in no hurry to find my soulmate, I am elated and certain that one day I will. Since the release of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayege (DDLJ) in 1995, which defined romance for the next two decades in Bollywood cinema, the concept of love has become extravagant in the South Asian community. I believe that DDLJ was a success not only due to its innovative plot, but also the time that it was released. It
114
| DFW | October 2018
was a time of change. Computers were slowly becoming an integral part of life and we were expanding our reach as a society as well as individuals regarding whom we were able to speak with. The romance of DDLJ was successful because for the first time, romance on the caliber of DDLJ, though still kind of impossible, was suddenly plausible. The concepts and rituals of love and marriage has changed more dramatically in the last 50 years than it had in the last 400. In Aziz Ansari’s book Modern Romance (2015), he states that less than 50 years ago the place you met your future spouse was based on geography. You met someone based on where you lived, where you went to school, or where you went to church. How were you supposed to go further than that? You couldn’t, not yet. But when Raj met Simran on a Eurail Trip, then followed his love all the way to India, South Asian society was just
starting to understand and believe in love as more than just a contract. And this idea not only thrilled us, but also pushed us into wanting to take control of our romantic futures. In the next 20 years, Bollywood would come out with classic movies like Hum Saath Saath Hai, Mohabbatien, and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun all of which became cinematic blockbusters. There was a reason people were swarming to see these movies. They had to be attracted to something, right? What Bollywood has essentially done since DDLJ is allowed for the mass audience to feel like they can finally find love and allowed them to live vicariously through these epic love stories. As the concept of choosing our own partners became more and more possible for South Asian persons, more so than in our parents’ generation, we didn’t need these extravagant love stories any more. After an entire generation of lovers were raised on DesiPages
these stories, the concept of love began to simmer out. In 2018, we are more interested in other concepts in South Asian society like caste system, historical heroes, and feeling disconnected from older generations. So now what can we gain from these movies? These love stories have set expectations for us that seem impossible, but for me are a baseline understanding of what love and romance really mean. Would I love to have Rakesh ‘Humpty’ Sharma follow me to Ambala because he wanted to prove to my dad that he was worthy of me? Yes. I deserve to be loved by someone that much. However, there are several things wrong with this concept. One, though my dad is my hero, but he will not be arranging my marriage nor will be deciding my future spouse for me. And two, I am not a prize to be won, and neither is my future Humpty. Humpty doesn’t need to prove himself to be superior to another man so I might choose him. Let me clarify that grand romantic gestures are not what we should take way from these Bollywood stories. What Bollywood has done for me, is given me a strong base for how I deserve to be loved. It has shown me that I, nor any woman, don’t deserve to be treated like Anjali in Kuch Kuch Kota Hai, but I do deserve to be loved and respected like Kalindi in Veere Di Wedding. You must take from Bollywood the self-worth that
it shows you. Let me be explicit in stating that we cannot absorb all the messages in these movies, because some are not going to help you define your self-worth, and others are just dangerous. So, has Bollywood taught me to expect love songs in the middle of sunflower fields? Absolutely not. What Bollywood has allowed me to do, is love myself so fiercely that I know I will be loved by someone just as much. It has shown me that with all my faults, I am still the protagonist of my own story. It’s proven to me through
movies like Jab We Met, Veere di Wedding, and 2 States, that I am allowed to have faults, love myself, and be loved. And if that person doesn’t love me as much as I love myself--let me be clear--then they do not deserve my time. They do not deserve your time. Everyone’s experience with Bollywood romances will be different. Some may find the extravagant gestures implausible and exhausting, the sexism to be atrocious, and the songs to be too long. But Bollywood helped me love myself. As Geet states in Jab We Met, “Mai apni favorite hoon.” To find your self-worth is a precious thing, and I found it within the cliché lines of “Mere Khawbon Mai Jo Aaye” and “Laaj Sharam Chud.” Aliza Ali is a graduate of Ohio University with bachelor degrees in Biological Sciences and World Religions. FREIDA PINTO ON METOO
FREIDA PINTO SAYS IT IS DISAPPOINTING AND DISTURBING TO SEE THAT THE METOO MOVEMENT THAT BROUGHT FORTH STORIES OF ABUSE OF MANY FEMALE AND MALE ACTORS IN HOLLYWOOD HAS FOUND NO TAKERS IN BOLLYWOOD. Freida Pinto says her personal MeToo movement involves rejecting movies with men who she knows have been abusers. From working with Woody Allen in You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger to headlining an indie like Trishna, Freida has been one of the few successful Indian actors in the west. In an interview to indianexpress.com, the actor says it is disappointing and disturbing to see that the MeToo movement that brought forth stories of abuse of many female and male actors in Hollywood has found no takers in Bollywood.
116
| DFW | October 2018
“I refuse to work with someone that I know is a repeat offender. I wish I could do the same here (in India),” Freida said, after acknowledging that the society in the west and the system in Hollywood empowers its actors far more than what Hindi cinema does for its women. “The whole MeToo movement in the west was possible because there was a lot of support, and a lot of research went into it. We all know who the people are in India. It is the same way everyone knew it was Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood, but someone had the courage, and in this case Ronan Farrow (journalist with The New Yorker) to get deep into his research and get support for these women and support them when that story would come out. You tell me one journalist in India who would do that and put his career on the line,” the actor said. In late 2017, Farrow’s articles in The New Yorker helped uncover the sexual abuse alle-
gations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Post the revelation, a social media campaign under the title of MeToo began globally wherein Hollywood actors and men and women across the world narrated their tales of harassment. While many Bollywood actors have opened up about the existence of sexual abuse in the film industry but no one has yet named and shamed the abusers, unlike in the west. Freida Pinto believes another aspect that needs to be taken into account while analysing the difference in the manner that the MeToo movement fared in Hollywood and Bollywood is that even in the west, the female actors who first came out with their stories of harassment were the ones who were already out of work. “The girls that came out first after the MeToo movement were the girls who had experienced something and were not working already. The girls that are active here came out much later. The known actresses should be grateful and thankful to the ones who had the courage to come out,” she said.

Serenity Do you struggle with bouts of anger and frequent irritability? There can be a lot more going on in your mind with the constant struggles of every day life. However, in the world of Ayurveda, these are both expressions of excess pitta in mano vaha srotas (the channel of the mind). Balanced pitta in the mind is credited with a number of positive mental and emotional capacities like will power, courage, confidence, contentment, satisfaction, enthusiasm, cooperation, acceptance, and surrender. However, when aggravated pitta accumulates in the channel of the mind, especially in these summer days and increased outside temperature, it tends to cause accumulating heat, and can lead to anger, irritability, and other fiery emotions like envy, criticism, and excessive ambition. Meditation, Ayurveda and Yoga are ways to support a return to balance so that we can reclaim health and vitality through the mental and emotional spheres. In Ayurveda, using diet, lifestyle, and supportive herbs to increase our exposure to cool, slow, and stabilizing influences will generally serve to relieve anger and irritability. These qualities help to balance excess heat, while softening, grounding, and containing pitta’s intensity. So if you are ready to walk on the path of Yoga, come join us at Dhyana Yoga Center. More information about our classes at www.DhyanaYogaCenter.com. We also offer weekly meditation classes on Thursday evenings at 7 PM. Come join us. RADHIKA APTE: Radhika Apte expressed that people should not only dream of Hollywood but also fight for equal representation in the world.
Radhika Apte, who is going to make her debut in Hollywood soon, admires actress Priyanka Chopra and truly respects her global fame. During a latest event Radhika said, “I admire whatever Priyanka is doing. She is doing an amazing job.
Radhika also expressed that people should not only dream of Hollywood but also fight for equal representation in the world. “I want our generation to break stereotypes and I want Indians who are making their foray in Hollywood to get all kinds of roles.” “It does not mean if you are brown in colour, you will only get to play Indian characters in international films. This cliched way of thinking should be broken,” she added.
She has been in Hollywood for a while and has fought so many battles there.” However, she feels there is a dearth of south Asian women in the world cinema. “If you go to Canada or Los Angeles, you will get to see many South Asians there but on screens, they are so less in number. It is abnormal not to have much South Asians on screens. We need more people.”

ABHISHEK BACHCHAN AS THE DYNAMIC LALLAN SINGH
O
IN YUVA, ABHISHEK BACHCHAN WALKS WITH THE SWAGGER OF A WANNABE DON AND HIS DEMEANOUR THROUGHOUT MOST OF THE FILM SPEAKS OF AN UNSHAKEABLE CONFIDENCE, THAT SPECIAL BRAND OF CONFIDENCE POSSESSED BY THOSE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY WANT BUT HAVE NO PLAN OF ACTION.

ne of the best parts about Mani Ratnam’s 2004 critically acclaimed Yuva is Abhishek Bachchan’s raw and rustic Lallan Singh. Lallan is as human as they come, he has his frailties, one of the primary being that he never knows when to stop. As a man, he is not admirable except maybe in his persistence to go after what he desires. Lallan is abusive, greedy and petty, but despite his flaws, he is still somehow dynamic. A great mix of contradictions brought alive by Abhishek Bachchan’s portrayal of the character. Before Mani Ratnam’s Yuva, the actor had had a slew of unsuccessful films like Zameen, Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost and Kuch Naa Kaho. However, it was with Yuva that Abhishek won over critics and after rewatching Abhishek in certain sequences, it becomes clear why the role brought him immediate recognition. While his UP accent slips, falls and climbs throughout the movie, what makes the performance shine is the actor’s earnestness to give a 100 percent to his job. Lallan’s joy and his eagerness to make a name for himself in the world often overtakes the love he holds dear for his partner, played by Rani Mukerji in the movie. At one point in time, he asks Vi-
jay Raaz’s character in the film about whether he should abandon his love. ‘Should I send her back?’ he asks, in a tone touched by equal parts confusion and exasperation and it is in this scene that Lallan urgently overpowers Abhishek and thank god for that. In Yuva, Abhishek walks with the swagger of a wannabe don and his demeanour throughout most of the film speaks of an unshakeable confidence, that special brand of confidence possessed by those who know what they want but have no plan of action. That kind of unfounded but firm belief is something that is a pain to describe in words and more so via actions. But Abhishek does it with Lallan, he shows Lallan as the directionless but determined goon who is ruthless in his pursuit of ambitions. Two actors who helped Abhishek’s character to spread the movie magic were Rani Mukerji and Vijay Raaz. While Vijay played the perfect sidekick to Lallan, it was Rani’s emotional vulnerability that helped feed Abhishek’s Lallan and made it that much more real. And to top it all, Abhishek had Mani Ratnam as the captain of the ship. Now Abhishek is all set to make a comeback to the big screen after a twoyear break, here’s hoping that his return to cinema is as memorable as his performance in Yuva.

ational award-winning filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, who worked with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the early days of the actor’s career, says he never imagined that he would become such a prominent name in the film industry. Recalling the time when he worked with Nawazuddin in the 2003 film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, Hirani said here on Wednesday. “He acted really well and I told him that ‘Nawaz, you are a very good actor’. But in my head, I never thought that Nawazuddin Siddiqui would become such a huge actor that he is today.”

Rajkumar Hirani says he never imagined that Nawazu-
ddin Siddiqui would become such a prominent name in In the film, Nawazuddin played a thief who pickpocketed from late actor Sunil Dutt’s character, who in turn saved him from public rage and taught him a life lesson. According to the filmmaker, the introductory scene of Sunil Dutt was initially not a part of the script but he added it after a suggestion from the film’s producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Interestingly, the scene was inspired by his real-life incident of a childhood memory of his father. Sharing the story during an interactive session titled ‘Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) Masterclass’, Hirani said, “Once a young man from Raipur came to my father saying that his money had been stolen and he needed Rs 2,000 to go back home, and asked if my father could lend the money.

the film industry. Nawazuddin played the role of a thief who pickpocketed from late actor Sunil Dutt’s character in Hirani’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. . My father gave it to him. “Later when he came back home in the evening and shared the story with our uncles, they said that the man is a fraud and that he goes to people and borrows money telling the same story but never pays back.” “My father found out the man and instead of taking him to the police station or beat him up physically; took him to the Sindhi Panchayat; which consists of some of the who’s who of our Sindhi community of the town. “While they tried to beat him up,
my father saved him and said ‘Look, everyone here is stealing something and doing scam in their business, but they never got caught because they are smart thieves. Be a smart thief, not an idiot thief that you are’.” “I applied the same story in that scene,” said the Sanju director.

Why did the vampires cancel the baseball game? Because they couldn’t find their bats.
What did the mummy say to the detective? Let’s wrap this case up. What do you get if you cross a snowman with a vampire? Frostbite. Why didn’t the skeleton go to the Halloween party? Because he had no-body to go with. What do ghosts serve for dessert? I scream! How do monsters tell their future? They read their horrorscope.

THE HAUNTED CASTLE
Once upon a time, lived a young boy called Maxime. Maxime (or Max as everyone called him) was 12 and lived in a smart house in the village. In the village lived 3000 people but just outside the village, in a haunted castle, lived a witch. The witch didn't live alone - she lived with a mosquito who did everything the witch told it to do. The witch was very wicked and every night she sent the mosquito out to bite the people in the village. But one person in the village never felt the mosquito bite and that person was Max. The other people in the village asked Max to kill the mosquito, so one morning, making sure his Mum didn't see him, Max headed out of the village towards the haunted castle. On his way to the castle, Max met a dwarf whose leg was trapped under a rock. Max kicked the rock with all his strength and freed the dwarf's leg. The dwarf was so grateful that he decided to accompany Max to the castle to thank him for being so brave. Later in the evening, Max found the castle and hid inside for the night. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, he was woken by strange noises. Max crept out of bed to see where the noises were coming from ... and he saw the ghosts. He fled back to bed! The next morning when Max awoke, he found the witch and her mosquito. Max took a spear and killed the witch, then squashed the mosquito with a flyswatter. When he arrived back in the village, all the people in the village were so happy that they crowned Max as the king of the village. Max married a village girl and they lived happily ever after with their many children.

Dispite all my Rage I am still just Nicolas Cage The Hollywood Flashback Interview Cage was born Nicholas Kim Coppola on January 7, 1964 in Long Beach, the youngest of three sons born to August Coppola, a professor of comparative literature, and Joy Vogelsang, a classically trained dancer and choreographer. Born into one of America’s premiere artistic families, Nic’s father is the eldest sibling of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire. You have two very different films out right now. Let’s talk about Lord of War first. Andrew Niccol has always been a very interesting filmmaker. Nicholas Cage: Yeah, he does have an opinion and unique ways of expressing it. I think Lord of War is more of a departure for him in terms of the far-out, science-fiction that he’s done in the past. This is more of a cinema-verite style of film, which makes it a little bit more uncomfortable, as well, because it’s in your face. It’s a glaring opinion, with a trigger. I liked its politics, too, and also the fact that he never crossed the line and made it a polemic. Yeah, some people have accused him of that, but it felt to me that it still seemed anchored in storytelling and didn’t become, in my opinion, too preachy. Yeah, and it also had a certain amount of ambiguity, which allowed the viewer to draw his/her own conclusions. Yeah, and that’s the most important thing with any form of expression, or art form: to allow people to come up with their own interpretation of the piece. All the greatest art, in my opinion, has been enigmatic art forms. Stanley Kubrick, to me, was a master of that. He never tried to preach what he was trying to do, and he would never give the interviews telling exactly what it was, because if he had, it would have robbed you of your own personal connection with the piece. I have tried to adopt that philosophy, but it’s very hard for an actor to do it, somehow. The more I say (about my work) the more it will detract from your own appreciation of the performance or the movie. The first movie I saw you in was Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). I had auditioned for Judge (Reinhold)’s part, and did about ten or twelve auditions for it, and didn’t get it, but got a supporting part as Brad’s Bud #1 or #2, I forget which. A lot of your scenes are on the TV version, that they air a lot on TNT. Are they really? That’s bizarre. I remember my father

driving me to work on that. I was 16. I guess that makes me a child actor, of sorts. It’s been over 25 years now. It’s very interesting growing up publicly. I was there and most of the actors were five or six years older than me, so I was the nerd again. Another mental note was checked off there. (laughs) Like American Graffiti (1973), Fast Times turned out to have this incredible cultural and artistic synchronicity in terms of all the actors who went onto greatness. Yeah, there was a buzz in the air that there was something excellent being created. It was another difficult time, though. I was Nicolas Coppola, and there was a lot of “Oh, he thinks he can be an actor because he’s Francis C o p p o l a’s nephew.” So again, I had to sort of figure out how to deal with that, and achieve my goals if this is being put on me. Now again, with a very young, very sensitive mind. So it occurred to me that one, I’d have to work twice as hard as the other actors in order to be taken seriously, and two, that I’d have to change my name. So it was between Fast Times and Valley Girl (1983) that Nicolas Cage was born. Right. You got “Cage” from the musician John Cage? John Cage and also the comic book character Luke Cage. I liked reading comics as boy—I was a nerd—and it was how I learned to read, really. Then I when I went to Horace Mann Elementary School, in music class they talked about John Cage, and I always thought that it was such a cool name. Then I started getting interested in that kind of music, which is what my father listened to. So that was the genesis of the name. Tell us what directing was like, with Sonny (2002). That was a great experience, too. It was a real highlight for me. I was surrounded by some of my favorite actors. I’ve never seen James Franco hit a false note. He’s a great actor, and he’s just fantastic in the movie.

HARSHVARDHAN
KAPOOR Actor Harshvardhan Kapoor isn’t fazed by back-to-back failures at the box office and says he is happy with the fact that he walked the path less travelled.
box office success evaded him.
At least, he can sleep in peace with that fact.
“My films were not very commercial in nature per se. They didn’t reach out to a wider audience. And I want to reach those people, but in my own way (by) doing the stuff that I want to do… and in time that will happen.”
“My ambition has always been to do films I would personally like to watch… Mirzya attempted to do something new with the Indian romantic musical, while Bhavesh Joshi Superhero… to a certain extent it did manage to be an important moment in the Indian superhero genre,” Harshvardhan said. “Now, had these films sold more tickets it would have been better for everyone but I can sleep well knowing that I followed through with my conviction and took the chance and did the stuff that I believed in… and have two unique works of art, be it flawed, to look back on,” he added. Harshvardhan made his Bollywood debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s 2016 film Mirzya, and picked Bhavesh Joshi Superhero as his second project. He got a perfect launch pad, and the movies were appreciated for their handling of somewhat unique subjects. But
HAPPY ABOUT HIS FAILURES
The actor feels it is “important to widen your fan base and have more people watch your work”.
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, in which Harshvardhan essays the role of a common man who takes the responsibility of tackling socio-political issues, is getting a great response after making its way to Netflix. “The response has been overwhelming. I knew when the film didn’t reach out theatrically that digital could potentially work well, because, even when it came out, the few people who saw it had some really positive things to say. “But I didn’t expect this kind of buzz and positivity. I kind of feel that the film released on August 16 when it dropped on digital and not on June 1.” Breaking down the reason behind the failure of Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Harshvardhan said: “I think it is definitely a film that was visually conceptualised for the big screen. “Having said that, I personally feel we did leave really good parts of the film on the editing table due to pace and length issues. Maybe a six 30-minute-episode
outlay would’ve been nice. Also it would have been amazingly received straight away and become what we wanted it to — and could have had sequels. I think theatrically we failed with the marketing aspect.” But he has no regrets. “I’m happy knowing we at least tried to reach out theatrically. My whole trip as an actor is to try to give our audiences new, innovative material so I can sleep well at night knowing we tried.”
ic of Olympic Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra. “It will start shortly. We are still working on the Hindi dialogue draft and the script,” he said, adding that the prep will include “lots of shooting practice”. “Lot of time spent with Abhinav, many script-readings, look-test, character-building workshops and reading sessions with co-actors.”
Harshvardhan will next be seen in the biop-

THE LOST ART OF COMMUNICATION BY AMEENA TAHER
The most important thing in all human relationships is conversation, but people don’t talk anymore, they don’t sit down to talk and listen. They go to the theater, the cinema, watch television, listen to the radio, read books, but they almost never talk. If we want to change the world, we have to go back to a time when warriors would gather around a fire and tell stories. Quotes the famous writer Paluo cohelo Let us to ponder on this aspect of our lives where we have completely forgotten the art of communication through conversation The lost art of communication Today with the advent of New media’s available we are constantly updating our day to day activities with everyone through Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp groups ,emails and text messages. In this process we end up forgetting are near and dear ones who are right beside us at that very moment! As we choose to update the whole world about our feelings emotions likes dislikes to the whole world. We’ve lost the ability to have a conversation with someone, keep eye contact and listen. This is something which we need to start thinking about because these are the values we are passing on to our youngsters our future generation. For an instance these day when families or friends go to a restaurant to have a meal more than enjoying the meal people get busy updating their status along with a selfie getting busy editing writing a post tagging family members but in the end have forgotten that one has come outside to spend “quality time” with family, friends or colleagues… Even holidays are not enjoyed. Visiting any place we see people start posting from the time they have stepped out of their home to reaching the airport or station and busy posing, pouting and posting photos…Even religious places are nit spared. On pilgrimage again people are busy posting photos on groups, pages. Even in a place to search for peace contentment and to connect with the divine, looks like the technology has got better of us today.

The world has got so fast paced that everyone is extremely busy ..BUSY?? BUSY??BUSY?? Busy doing what BEING CONNECTED!! Connected through technology always available but if one sits down and really thinks how many of us have had a good conversation with a family member or friend or anyone we know in person where we have sat down over a cup of coffee or had one on one in person….or met a group of people who share common interest and discussed something as a group .Paying attention by listening for the unspoken emotions which you can never do while having a chat on phone or even text message or even with a voice message. The least the late 90’s and early 2000’s saw family member drag themselves at least to the media room or living room and come together to watch a TV show or movie together and spend some good time together but in today’s era of easily available technology and availability of vast choices of mass media gives …everyone
has their own choices, preferences ,categories liking and their own personal screen….so you have family members sitting in the same living room but each one is busy with their own technological toy! Technology is a boon when it comes to making the world a global village but a bane when it has distanced individuals. Let’s stop becoming those phone-toting people who are emotionally absent for our loved one – be it in our living rooms, bedrooms or over the dinner table: wherever - so distracted by our online lives fidgeting with the screens before us trying to be connected with the whole world that we stop connecting with our loved ones.

When a lady slapped ABHISHEK BACHCHAN and said to him, ‘You’re embarrassing your family’s name, stop acting’Entertainment
A
bhishek Bachchan was recently attended Jagran Film Summit as a guest speaker. During the summit, he was asked several questions related to his recent films Manmarziyaan, his character in the film Robbie, his journey in the Hindi film industry, being Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s son, nepotism and more. During the chat, he revealed that after watching Manmarziyaan his wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan said to him that he is a very good actor. But among all the revelations, one was quite shocking to know which Abhishek laughed off. He revealed that he was once slapped by someone outside a movie theatre in Mumbai after the screening of his then released film Shararat. It so happened that his film Shararat had released. So he went to Gaiety Galaxy Theatres to gauge the audience’s reaction to the film and to his shock, a lady came up to him and slapped him. At the summit, when he was asked to confirm about the same he said,
This is not the first time Abhishek Bachchan had talked about it. In fact, back in 2011-2012, he himself had narrated this shocking incident in an episode of Yeh Hai Meri Kahaani, which aired on UTV Stars. Here’s what he had narrated, One moment I’ll never forget ki meri ek film release hui thi Shararat aur main Gaiety Galaxy gaya uske reactions dekhne ke liye. Ek lady thi woh picture dekh ke baahar nikli interval mein aur unhonein baahar aake, main concessions stand ka paas khada hua tha, aur unhonein mujhe baahar aake thappad maar diya, aur kaha ki, “You’re embarrassing your family’s name, stop acting” (One moment I’ll never forget. My film ‘Shararat’ was released and I went to Gaiety Galaxy to check the audience reactions.
