Bollywood Talkies PARINEETI CHOPRA ON KESARI

AAMIR KHAN REVEALED

Kesari revolves around the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi in which an army of 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans. Parineeti plays wife of Akshay Kumar in the film. Talking about her character in the film, she said, “Everybody knows Kesari is about the Battle of Saragarhi. It’s a boy’s film, but at very crucial and emotional moments of the film, character of Akshay Kumar thinks about his dead wife (played by me).’’ ‘’It’s very cool love story that is woven into the story of battle. I have a very small role in the film, but it is one of those films that I wanted to be a part of,’’ she added. “It was one of those films where I didn’t think about what my screen-time is. After release of the film, people will think my role is too small, but it will not bother me,’’ said the Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl actress.

During the press meet on birthday, Aamir revealed, “When I do a film, I forget I have a family a kid, I get so absorbed.” He added that his wife Kiran Rao had once told him, “You don’t really care for us, we don’t exist for you, we are not in your periphery. Even if you are with us, your mind is somewhere else. I know you love us, but ya I am not even sure if I want to change that because then you won’t be the person I fell in love with.” Aamir said he understood the point she was making. “This happened two years back and I then realized that baat toh sahi hai, it’s not right to ignore my family. So, I told Kiran that every day I’ll come by 6 and 6-8 I’ll be home with Azad. I give him a bath, we have dinner then I read out something, so that is one big change, post 8, I go back to my meetings and work.”

SANJAY & MADHURI IN KALANK

PRIYANKA CHOPRA AND NICK JONAS

Madhuri and Sanjay opened up on the experience of working together after two decades. Sanjay Dutt said, “Bohot acha laga aur bohot samay ke baad main inke saath kaam kar raha hoon. Aur yehi koshish karunga ki aur zyada kaam karoon inke saath. (I feel happy that I got to work with her after so long. And I would try to work with her more).” Madhuri, too, is ecstatic to work with Sanjay Dutt in Kalank. She said, “Hum 20 plus years ke baad kaam kar rahe hai saath me. It is very wonderful to work with people who had worked with before.”

Priyanka opened up on her marriage with Nick on the chat show, The View. When asked whether she cooks for him, she answered, “He is from a good Southern home where his mother made food, and I am not like that. I am a terrible wife in that sense.” She added that she can make eggs and toast for him. She revealed that when she told Nick about this, he said, “It’s okay babe, even I can’t cook.” Recently, the Jonas brothers made a comeback with their single Sucker, which topped the charts. TAX PLANNING FOR SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE US Tax planning can help vastly reduce the taxes owed, especially for small businesses. It is often confused with tax-preparation, but they are two very different things. While tax-preparation is getting your taxes arranged for quarterly or annual filings, tax planning helps you strategize ahead of time what needs to be filed and what are the records to be kept. It entails the careful consideration of deductions and credits that can be incurred by the business through the year to reduce the tax burden. A certified public accountant (CPA), or tax advisor, can help you make considerable savings through small business tax planning. One of the primary roadblocks for small businesses is that the owners often have to multitask- heading management, marketing product development, and accounting as well. As a result, they end up treating the managerial and accounting aspects as a chore and seldom afford it any time. Tax planning is treated as an accompaniment to tax preparation and relegated to a year-end exercise. This defeats the entire purpose of the activity and barely has any impact. This becomes all the more significant when the tax is cash-based, and timing of cash receipts and vendor repayments are a significant factor. Apart from this, it is also important to have the business registered as a sales tax vendor and prepare the requisite forms in order to avoid possible tax liabilities.

keep abreast of changes in tax laws and in the know of related policies. Being aware yourself, will also ensure you can exact the most out of your tax advisors. Yes, strategic tax planning is crucial in reducing the amount of taxes owed, but it can`t happen overnight. It happens over a period of time, and perhaps even over a couple of financial years. Regular meetings with your advisors and CPA through the year is essential. As elaborated earlier, it is always a bit of an uphill battle, for which you need to arm yourself sufficiently with your financial statements, projected purchases in the future, possible changes in staffing and such. With all these in your arsenal and your CPA and tax advisors by your side, small business tax planning will help you substantially in reducing the amount of taxes you owe.

Cost of goods sold, occupancy cost, taxes and wages, travel, insurance and marketing all fall into common categories for tax deductions. In fact, practically everything that supports the daily operations of your small business is tax-deductible. It is thus essential to maintain detailed records of all business-related expenses for audit purposes. One must always remember, for business tax deductions, it is crucial to prove that the expenses were made for business purposes itself. As a result, original vendor invoices and other proofs of purchase such as receipts need to be kept in orderbank statements are not enough. It is essential to

RETIREMENT PLANNING Retirement is a phase when you should just sit back and relax. Nobody deserves to be worried about financial aspects when they are retired, but with the growing price rise in today’s world, it is very likely that you remain concerned about money, especially when you’re not working. It is, therefore, very important to have a proper plan so you can avoid all sorts of financial troubles postretirement. In the next few months we will give you a few of ways to handle your retirement planning. Here are a few simple ways in which you can overcome financial difficulties when you are retired. 1. Plan Ahead - The easiest way to avoid financial difficulties is to save up as much money as you can when you are still working. In that case, right after retirement, you can cut off from your existing expenditures. The key to every retirement plan is that the earlier you start saving up and preparing, the better it is. Moreover, you should also count in the expenditures on health care and miscellaneous costs which may go up anytime. 2. Have an Insurance - Insurance is always a safe way out to avoid getting immersed in the cost of an unforeseen event which might put your retirement savings at risk. Health insurance is a must for anyone approaching retirement. Besides that, you should take helpful advice from your insurance agent about the particular insurance you should take to cover up your costs. Though expensive, long-term care insurance protects you from the financial burden if you become incapable of caring for yourself.

f anyone’s seen John Abraham, up close and personal, they’d know that the actor, even at his leanest, can pass off as the Indian hulk. But that’s not the reason he doesn’t have a bodyguard. He believes, “I’m like any other human being. We’re all made of the same grain, and the color of our blood is not different either. So, there’s no reason why I should be aloof. I don’t like shooing people away from me. In fact, I’d rather be with people.” John told about an incident that took place a month ago when he attended an award function. He hailed an autorickshaw and came back walking, as the venue was a stone’s throw away from his house in Bandra. He says, “I can actually come back walking without any hesitation or fear of being mobbed. I stand by and take selfies with as many people as I can on the way. I love crowds and I am not scared of them, and so I don’t keep guards to push people away. I always take pictures, but after a point, I run. Even if someone runs after me, I run faster. No one can catch up with me. Even the ones who are fast don’t last long enough, chasing me. I run 20 km a day. I just say, ‘Sorry, sorry, sorry’ to everyone and run. It’s not like I run at the sight of people, but sometimes, it’s better to just run than to hurt people. I haven’t forgotten that I come from a middle-class family. Our professions take us in different trajectories, but we shouldn’t forget who we are.”

There is pressure because I didn’t expect ‘Baaghi 2’ would do the numbers which it did so, there is lot of expectations among audience for ‘Baaghi’ as a franchise and not only that, I am also doing ‘Student of The Year 2’ which is a very big franchise too,” Tiger said at an event. “I am stepping into the shoes of three very big stars (Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra) along with my co-stars who are two new beautiful girls. We have lot of pressure on us,” he added. Tiger added that it is a big film and we want the franchise to live on so, we have kept our fingers crossed. Sharing his experience of working with Hrithik, he said, “It was like a dream come true moment for me. After every shot, when I see him on the monitor, I feel like I am dreaming because it has been my childhood fantasy working with him. When we do a high-speed shot or an action scene then it feels amazing.” When asked what he is learning from Hrithik, he said, “I have learnt many things from him. If I have to say one thing then, it would be working on minute details of everything. Hrithik sir thinks a lot before giving every shot from every aspect so, understanding his mindset and his thought process in a scene or in an action sequence has been a great learning for me.”

SHRADDHA KAPOOR

Shraddha Kapoor is a busy girl and has her plate full with films like the campus drama Chhichore, Baaghi 3 with Tiger Shroff, Street Dancer 3D and Saaho. Due to this hectic schedule, she has had to drop out of the Saina Nehwal biopic, after training hard to play the ace-shuttler on screen. The film is being directed by Amole Gupte. As a result of too many dates clashing, Shraddha is unable to devote her time to the biopic. Parineeti Chopra has been roped instead. Producer Bhushan Kumar confirmed the news and said, “We want to wrap up Saina by this year-end for an early 2020 release, so going ahead with the project is a decision taken by mutual consent. We are glad Parineeti has come on board for the film. Saina has made every Indian proud and we can’t wait to take her story to the world in the year of the Olympics.” Shraddha’s first look from the film had been released and had created much interest. She had even been intensively training for the film, before she was diagnosed with dengue last year. Apart from this, the film had been beset by several delays and there were several rumors that Shraddha hadn’t been able to ace the game as yet, due to her busy schedules. For guidance, Shraddha had none other than Saina herself. Whenever Shraddha had any queries about the game, she would text the shuttler. “She is so prompt and helpful always. I shared a video of me practicing badminton and she gave me her feedback. She is such an inspirational person,” said the actress.

RANI MUKERJI

Rani has delivered power-packed performances in films like ‘Black’ (2005), ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’ (2007) and ‘No One Killed Jessica’. But it’s not just about memorable roles. Rani Mukerji is among those few actors in Bollywood, who are a rare combination of formidable talent and commercial success. The actress married producer Aditya Chopra in 2014, and has, over the years, become rather choosy about her roles. She gave birth to daughter Adira in December 2015 and took a break post-delivery to enjoy motherhood. While her last full-fledged Bollywood outing, ‘Hichki’ enjoyed success and critical acclaim, Rani says that she was enjoying her time away from the limelight. In fact, according to the actress, it was her husband Aditya Chopra, who pushed her back to work. She noted, once the kids start going to school and they have nothing to occupy themselves with, they will regret that their careers were left behind. Rani also said that women shouldn’t feel guilty about working after becoming mothers. During pregnancy and after childbirth, a woman should give herself a break to take care of herself. However, just because you have had a child, you don’t need to feel guilty about getting back to work. If that’s the case, men, too, should feel the same, she said. The actress said that there’s no need for either parent to feel guilty, because a child is brought up together. Rani also said that if a child knows that her parents are working hard for her, she will start valuing the things she gets in life a bit more.

Today, I am excited to bring him into focus in our magazine and to bring into focus a few organizations that he has either founded or cofounded through which, he is making a huge contribution to our community and helping the South Asian arts get it’s due respect it deserves. Jitin is the Founder/Festival Director at DFW South Asian Film Festival which started four years back, when Jitin realized that Dallas being the #5 media hub in the country did not have a South Asian festival. He put together his resources, met high net worth people, got sponsors and started curating his own festival and this will be his fifth annual festival from May 16th through May 19th. Jitin says, that it feels great that he has been able to bring quality programming to Dallas, and when he sees the community embrace the efforts DesiPages

and art appreciators plan their vacations around the festival, so they can attend, it makes him feel humbled. Since this is a submission festival which is curated, it brings in a lot of quality programing which is well appreciated. Jitin also expresses that it is just the beginning and he has a long way to go as his goal is to make SAFF the best film festival in the country. Another important venture that he is involved in, is DIAC - Dallas Indian Arts Collective, where he is the Co-Founder/Executive Director. Past August he launched the center stage; a 10,000 Sq feet of Events space in the Design District. DIAC is a nonprofit organization which brings different artists from India to Dallas, specifically in visual arts, performing arts, dance, theatre and music. After covering the Film festival his interests in the other forms of arts continued to grow. He says, “there was a need inside me that focused on the rest of the art coming from South Asia and find a place in Dallas”. Since now they have their own events space, it makes it easy to bring artists to Dallas to perform. I have particularly known Jitin from his media background and as an anchor. I was very interested to find out how did that happen, and he has an interesting story to share. He grew up in Colaba, Mumbai (then Bombay), and lived with his grandfather for a couple of years, as his parents were travelling around the world, because his father was a ship captain. His grandfather had a great influence on him, and every evening when he would cut his fruits and watch the news, he would be mesmerized by the news anchors. That is when Jitin decided that he would become an anchor to make his grandfather proud. That is when his media journey began. Interesting how certain things excite kids and carve their career path. He has many projects lined up in fashion, dance and other arts. One can find more by writing to him on info@jingomedia.com . He says,” Dallas has been very kind, and we want people to continuously support us when such events happen. We cannot do anything without the art Connoisseurs”. I can righly say that we could not have reached so far in spreading Indian Art awareness in Dallas if you were not here Jitin. Wishing you luck and more power!! DFW |April
