Dear Friends, Mother Theresa said, "One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody." Whatever happens, take responsibility. If you take responsibility of yourself you will develop a hunger to accomplish your dreams. "All I got is dreams....nobody else believes, nobody else can see, nobody else but me." The greatest day in your life and mine is when we take total responsibility for our attitudes....that's the day we truly grow up. The moment you take responsibility for everything in your life is the moment you can change anything in your life. This is a story about 4 people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have. Leadership is about taking responsibility, not making excuses....rank does not confer privilege or give power...it iimposes responsibility. Take what comes your way....do the best with it...be as responsible as you can and something good will happen. The price of greatness is responsibility, and you cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today. "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world," said Anne Frank. In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility. "Don't expect anyone to understand your journey, especially if they have never walked your path." "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand....most people listen with the intent to reply." The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence. Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody. "Before you speak, listen. Before you write, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you invest, investigate. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. Before you retire, save. Before you die, give." And remember that you are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say. I'm just a nobody telling everybody about somebody who can save anybody. Until next time, Shabnam Modgil

"It's Not Right to Spread Rumours": Irrfan Khan's Spokesperson on His Health Fans over the world are waiting endlessly to receive any update on Irrfan Khan’s health. The actor who is currently undergoing treatment in the UK for neuroendocrine tumour, has been a little silent off late and this sparked rumours of his worsening condition. Irrfan previously updated fans through his social media account about the status on his health and predictably, they can’t wait for their superstar to be cured and to return back home. Dismissing any rumour about Irrfan Khan’s deteriorating health, his spokesperson recently issued a statement saying, “This latest round of news being spread through social media in the last few days about Irrfan’s health is absolutely false and there’s no truth to it whatsoever. We as his family and friends again request the members of the media to continue their support and the prayers that have come Irrfan’s way. However it’s not right to spread rumours through mediums of social media without fact check or any official validation. In the meanwhile once again we request everyone to refrain from picking up social media statuses as affirmative developments on someone’s health.” On the film front, Irrfan Khan’s “Blackmail” recently released and was met with rave reviews. So, stop speculating about his health, and go watch this film if you haven’t already! 16 | May 18

Aishwarya Rai's “Fanney Khan” Is On Track, No Delays in Payment

There are reports suggesting that KriArj Films, the production house which scored a hat-trick of hits in 2016-17 with “Rustom”, “Toilet Ek Prem Katha” and “Padman” is going through a rough patch this year what with their ambitious war epic “Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran” and the costly love story “Kedarnath” hitting roadblocks. Now there are further reports that KriArj’s Aishwarya Rai-Anil Kapoor starrer “Fanney Khan” has also been stalled due to non-payment of the crew. “Hogwash,” says a prominent member of the film’s team. “There are no dues. The film is nearly complete. We just need to shoot a song, which awaits the dates of a choreographer. Where are these reports coming from? There are also wild conjectures about Aishwarya being unhappy with the progress of “Fanney Khan”. Completely false.” According to sources close to the actress she is “extremely gung-ho” about the film and the character in “Fanney Khan”. Aishwarya will be doing a remake of Raj Khosla’s horror classic “WohKaun Thi” for KriArj films. Discussions on Aishwarya’s looks and songs for “WohKaun Thi” have already started. Incidentally these negative stories abou KriArj Entertainment started when the production house got into a legal scuffle with John Abraham’s J A Entertainment over their collaborative film “Parmanu”. 22 | May 18

Will Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone Tie the Knot in December This Year? Along with the much awaited and much spoken about wedding of Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja, the internet has also been buzzing with news of another potential star wedding. The one being discussed is that of Bollywood’s favourite Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. Even though the duo have never come forward confirming their relationship, their countless outings together and the unmissable blush on both their faces as they speak about each other was enough to prove to fans that there was more to their relationship than being ‘just friends.’ Since a few months, there has been constant speculation about the #DeepVeer wedding, with the paparazzi even spotting Deepika ‘wedding shopping’ with Ranveer’s family. However, putting an end to all the rumours, the duo has now finally spoken up about the status of their relationship. In a recent interview with Spice Route magazine, the actor revealed that they will not be getting married this year. He said, “It is the function of speculation – to exist. Nothing is official till it is made official and I am not a seer. I cannot say this will happen on this date in the future. Right now we are both extremely busy working. Besides, she is also recuperating from back problems. So we are quite occupied and distracted. So, if there is any announcement in the future, you will be hearing me shouting from the rooftops.” Supporting Ranveer’s stance, Deepika also spoke subtly about how the rumours weren’t true. In a recent interview with Rajeev Masand she said, “When it is time, I think I will know it. But as an institution, I think it is extremely important because that’s the way I have been raised. It is extremely important for me to see myself like that. It is every girl’s dream. I have always followed my instincts and I think I will feel it when I am ready or when it has to happen.”So looks like there’s no December wedding planned for Ranveer and Deepika after all. We’ll have to wait longer to see these two finally tie the knot! 23 | May 18

Priyanka Chopra on Losing a Film Because of The Colour of Her Skin

Priyanka Chopra in a sensational disclosure to a Hollywood portal has alleged that she was discriminated against on the basis of her colour in Hollywood. A very important issue, Priyanka's comments have now gone viral in Hollywood. “It happened last year. I was out for a movie, and somebody [from the studio] called one of my agents and said, ‘She’s the wrong—what word did they used?—‘physicality.’ So in my defence as an actor, I’m like, ‘Do I need to be skinnier? Do I need to get in shape? Do I need to have abs?’ Like, what does ‘wrong physicality’ mean?” Chopra pauses. “And then my agent broke it down for me. Like, ‘I think, Priy, they meant that they wanted someone who’s not brown.’ It affected me.” Priyanka told InStyle in the USA. "It happens at the casting level. There are not enough meaty, strong lead roles for women where we don’t have to compromise on every level just to get the best job.” That makes it harder to negotiate. Women are taught, “don’t ruffle feathers—you won’t get the next job. It’s that conditioning we need to break.” From there, one problem feeds another. “I think one of the big steps is to first of all recognize it. I see a lot of people explaining why the pay gap exists. Producers have told me, ‘Well, when you have even the biggest actress in a movie, it still doesn’t make the returns that it would if you cast a guy.’” Studios, in turn, allot smaller budgets to female-centric films, and we’re back to square one," she added. It’s so shocking to know that an actress as established as Priyanka also faces these issues! 24 | May 18

Deepika Padukone Lost a Role to PriyankaChopra in This Iconic Film!

“Mary Kom” till date remains to be one of the most inspirational Bollywood biopics, based on the real life story of the woman boxer. In the film, Priyanka Chopra essayed her role perfectly, wowing audiences with a stand out performance, proving to be a perfect fit for the character. However, 4 years later, it has come to light that Priyanka wasn’t the only choice for the role. According to reports, debutante director, Omung Kumar initially offered the role to Rani Mukerji who declined it. Priyanka then willingly accepted the role and did everything she could to shadow the boxer. When Rani declined the role of Mary Kom, apparently the filmmaker had also offered the same part to Deepika Padukone. Yes, you heard it right! Coming from a sports background, Deepika was one of the choices and the actress was apparently more than happy to essay the role of the iconic sportsperson. However, the role eventually went to Priyanka Chopra. Speaking about her interest in the film during a press interaction in the past, Deepika had said, “I would have loved to do a biopic on Mary Kom, but now Priyanka Chopra is doing it. I feel she is right for the film. I am glad a film on Mary Kom is being made. People have started recognising her. At least her achievements will not go waste. When two years ago I used to talk about Mary Kom, everyone was clueless. Today when a film is being made on her, everyone seems to have some interest in her.”

Richa's look in 'Daas Dev' inspired by real life politicians Richa Chadha has been busy shooting back to back films this year. She is currently shooting for Anubhav Sinha's “Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai”in Lucknow, and is also promoting her upcoming release, “Daasdev”. “Daasdev” is the modern interpretation of “Devdaas”, directed by Sudhir Mishra with a stellar cast starring Richa Chadha, Rahul Bhatt, Aditi Rao Hydari, Saurabh Shukla and Vinit Kumar Singh to name a few. Richa Chadha who plays Paro in the film is not only Devdaas' lover but also his competition. During the prep for this film, apart from understanding the landscape of UP politics, learning the body language of politicians and the dialect from the region, Richa also researched on many women MPs and MLA's for her role in the film. Her look is inspired by various powerhouse women in politics like Sonia Gandhi, Poonam Mahajan and Dimple Yadav. We cannot wait to see her avatar in the film and hope her role is as strong as the women who have inspired it. Sources say, `The film is set against a strong set up of politics in hinterland India. In this take of “Devdas” with a twist, the women specially the role of Paro is shown to be a strong woman who takes on Dev in the game of politics. Richa's character was etched taking references of appearances of several established woman political leaders to show authenticity to the character`. 27 | May 18

Shilpa Shetty Reveals How She First Began Her Career in Bollywood

Shilpa Shetty has revealed that it was word of mouth that actually gave her Baazigar. “I didn’t think I was going to make it (acting) a career. At 17, I was going from one agency to another to earn pocket money, as a model. I only got into that because someone suggested that since I am tall, I should try my hand at modelling. After getting a portfolio done and sending pictures to different agencies, I was offered a film. Voh toh bani nahi, but somebody in that agency noticed me, and told the producers of “Baazigar”, and the rest is history,” Shilpa Shetty told The Hindustan Times. She also added that towards the middle of her career she faced a lull where she was typecast but she managed to come out of it again. “Back in the day, when somebody had a hit film, everybody would love to cast that one person only. I didn’t have to struggle to land films. It actually started mid-way towards my career. People started typecasting me in just glamorous roles. At that point, we were just like glamour dolls in movies, we were dedicated to doing that. After this, there was a lull in my career, but then “Dhadkan” (2000) happened, and my career revived. I have seen it all — the highs and the lows. But I never gave up,” Shilpa added. Shilpa has definitely come a long way since when she first started her career in Bollywood!

Parmanu Update: John Abraham’s Film Blocked from Digital Platfom, Actor Hits Back with Three FIRs It seems to be a war to the finish between John Abraham and KriArj Entertainment, the production company that the actor is in tussle with. John released a teaser trailer of the disputed film “Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran”. The trailer soon disappeared from John Abraham’s twitter account with an announcement saying “The video has been removed in response to a report from the copyright holder.” The teaser which has a voice-over by Boman Irani and montage shots of great historical events such as Kapil Dev’s winning the World Cup in 1983, makes no mention of KriArj Entertainment. The teaser was stopped from broadcast. KriArj’s legal team is now petitioning for the seizure of all promotional videos and related footage of the film until the dispute is solved. Meanwhile, John isn’t taking things lying down either. An Indian Express Report said that the actor has filed three criminal complaints against Prernaa Arora. In a recent official statement, John’s JA Entertainment stated, “John Abraham, Director of M/s JA Entertainment has filed three criminal complaints against Prernaa Arora and her company, KriArj Entertainment for cheating, breach of trust, defamation and offences committed under the Information Technology Act.” The statement further read, “John Abraham, through his production house JA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. had signed a Co-production agreement with Prernaa Arora’s company Kriarj Entertaiment Pvt. Ltd. wherein Kriarj had agreed to pay Rs 35 crores to 38 | May 18

John’s company to cover the cost of production, fees of all actors and other production related expenses and had also agreed to additionally bear the Print and Advertisement expenses (P&A) for the film “Parmanu The Story of Pokhran” against which John had agreed to assign the exploitation rights and 50% IPR of the film to Prernaa’s company. ” JA Entertainment also added, “However, after Prernaa’s repeated delays in making payments by stopping cheque payments and giving wrong bank transfer details (UTR numbers) at every stage and refusal to pay the last tranches of payment, which were critical for completing the post-production work of the film, John followed the due process as laid down by law. He first gave a legal notice to cure the breach and after Prernaa’s failure to cure the breaches, John terminated the agreement with Prernaa in order to save his film.” JA Entertainment in their statement also claimed that Prernaa Arora had illegally blocked the online publicity material of the film launched by John and that Prernaa has already recovered monies in excess of what she had to pay him from various third parties and yet did not pay him his dues. Aggrieved by this, John has opted for a legal support. John’s

company also rubbished reports of Prernaa filing FIR against him. In a statement, it said, “This is with reference to the media reports stating that an FIR (First Information Report) has been registered at the Khar Police Station against Mr John Abraham and his production house, JA Entertainment. We would like to categorically state that this statement is factually incorrect and misleading.” On the other hand, KriArj Entertainment denies that any criminal case has been filed against them. A spokesperson from the company said, " There are various articles being circulated by Mr John Abraham's JA Entertainment claiming that criminal cases have been filed against Ms Prerna Arora of KriArj Entertainment. As also clarified by us at numerous times in the past we hereby re confirm that the allegations made by JA Entertainment are false and frivolous and that it is in fact JA Entertainment who is guilty of various breaches of our understanding with them including infringement of copyright and cheating / fraud which is the sole basis for our filing multiple criminal complaint/s and the copyright infringement suit against JA Entertainment before the Hon’ble Bombay High Court which is due to be listed for hearing. In addition to our earlier criminal complaint a

fresh criminal complaint was also filed yesterday by KriArj against JA Entertainment and Mr John Abraham for piracy / leakage of Film materials including the poster and teaser of the Film as owned by KriArj Entertainment. As per our knowledge, no case has been registered against Prerna Arora or any members of team KriArj by the Khar Police Station and it is apparent that the attempts made by JA Entertainment are nothing but an immature counterblast and an afterthought against KriArj to defame them and to sabotage the release and distribution of the Film by KriArj in spite of being fully aware of KriArj’s rights in the Film as Co producers, joint owners and exclusive right holders. After receiving close to 30 Crores as and when demanded by KriArj on a film which was to be made on a budget of Rs 22 Crores KriArj was still never given books of accounts showing the true extent of expenses done on the Film. This is just one of the several breaches due to which we have sued JA Ent before the Bombay High Court. As the matter is subjudice we reserve our right to make further statements once matters are decided by Court.” Clearly, we haven’t heard the last word in this battle and it looks like it’s going to be a long, messy one. 39 | May 18

Heard This? Bipasha Basu Was Bullied As A Model

For the first time, Bipasha Basu has admitted that she was bullied when she was a newbie model. Recalling her days of intense struggle she told Pune Mirror that senior models used to harass her when she would be changing in the backrooms. She also admitted that sometimes she would be physically prevented from entering when she got the cue during fashion events. "Modelling is a competitive business and tough to break through. Once the senior models at a fashion show asked me and another newbie to get them coffee. My fellow model got up to serve them but I stayed put, telling them to get it themselves. I got ragged a lot because I was a no-nonsense girl. Fortunately, I had some protective friends like choreographers and those who worked backstage who would watch out for me. But senior models wouldn’t let me enter when I got my cue and harass me while I was changing," Bipasha said. 40 | May 18

The Jaya Bachchan You Didn’t Know In one of her finest performances Jaya Bachchan played mother to a very, very endearing son who just becomes a number: “1084”. In real life, she’s mother to a son who’s well on the way to becoming No1. Co-incidentally I saw Jaya Bachchan playing mom to Joy Sengupta in Govind Nihalani’s unforgettable “Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa” just a day before Abhishek won an award for his fine performance in “Yuva”. Minutes after his name was announced, I had received a message from the proud mother informing me of the same. I could see the tears of pride and joy glistening through the words. Jaya’s role as mother matters more to her than any other. That’s precisely why she gave up superstardom in 1973, when she ruled the boxoffice, to become wife to Amitabh Bachchan and subsequently mother to Shweta and Abhishek. “Everyone saw it as a big sacrifice and painted me as Mother India. But the fact is, I did what I wanted to. There was no martryrdom involved because I’m not that kind of a person. No one can make me do what I don’t want to.” That this woman of substance won’t do something only because it’s expected of her, goes without saying. Jaya is a woman of steel in the truest sense of the word. In spite of being the first lady of filmdom, with the accompanying baggage of obligations and responsibilities, she’s as real and rooted to the ground as anyone can get. You won’t find her saying or doing anything she doesn’t believe in. Nor will you come across anyone who can accuse her of being unfair. Frank, sometimes brutally so, she calls a spade a spade. How often has she pulled me up for my personality-oriented page-3 writing? “You aren’t meant to do these things. We need serious writers who can put our cinema into a perspective. We’ve enough peeping-tom journalists writing about which star sneezed at which party.” In fact Jaya, in all her candid objectivity, believes I write too much about her husband. I agree. When I see her give a performance like the one in “Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa” or the earlier ones in “Doosri Sita”, “Uphaar”, “Annadata”, “Koshish”, “Kora Kagaz” and “Mili”, I feel film history has been extremely unfair to Jaya Bachchan. You really can’t blame me entirely for the scarcity of writings on this formidable actress. She doesn’t allow me to write about her, unless I throw a major

tantrum and threaten to go on a hunger strike in front of her beautifully kept residence “Jalsa” in Juhu, Mumbai. Let’s not forget, this pioneering performer heralded naturalistic acting into mainstream Hindi cinema. Before her there was Nutan, and after her there are Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi. But Jaya occupies a unique position. When she came into the movies with her two back-to-back performances in “Guddi” and “ Uphaar” in 1971, Jaya’s complete denial of ‘filmy’ glamour became a trend-setting phenomenon. While we tend to think of Jaya Bhaduri as the actress in a crumpled cotton sari and loose hair playing authentic middle-class characters in middle-of-the-road movies by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Gulzar and Anil Ganguly, she in fact, created a fashion statement. In 1972-73 her hairstyle and specially-designed blouses with puffed sleeves, became a rage among women in the country. Jaya was a fashion icon. “Oh I thought other actresses were fashion icons. I was just…Jaya,” she laughs uproariously. “I just wore and did what seemed right for me. To me the thought of doing anything that doesn’t come naturally to me seems unacceptable. That applies to both my personal and professional dealings.” The daughter of a crusader and pioneering journalist Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, I’m proud to say she’s my closest friend among the Bachchans and perhaps the most short-changed in terms of career and recognition. Everyone seems to think Amitabh Bachchan is the mega-star of the family. To me Jaya is the tallest Bachchan. You have to see the well-oiled running of her impeccable household, and how cool she remains in spite of work-related and personal guests swarming her residence, to realize how tall her presence looms over her distinguished family. Everyone sees Abhishek as his father’s son, when in fact he has more of his mother than his father in him. The smile and those eyes…. They’ve been bequeathed to the Bachchan heir from his illustrious mother who, at one point in the history of cinema was so huge, she could shoulder the then-struggling Amitabh Bcahchan’s endeavour to become a star.

So far she has been seen with her son only once in a Bengali film called “Des” where she played a social crusader who’s about to be whisked out of the country by her NRI son. Abhishek played the son.I don’t think Jaya is comfortable with the idea of playing her own son’s mother on screen. It’s hard for her to play a role that she has perfected in real life. It’s even harder for her to trifle with truth. So many struggling directors improve their act. Her husband would never take upon himself to assess people. He would simply turn away with a smile. Jaya can’t do that. She confronts people situations and crises headlong, gets to the bottom of the problem and then moves on. “Zanjeer” wouldn’t have happened to her husband if Jaya hadn’t agreed to play the relatively short role opposite Amitabh Bachchan. Many leading heroines including Mumtaz had said no. Jaya sportingly stepped in at the eleventh hour, adding great star value to the film… the rest is too well known to be rpeated. What needs reiteration is the intense success-streak that she enjoyed from 1971 to 1973 , right up to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Abhimaan”, “Mili” and “Chupke Chupke”, all three with her husband, before she called it quits. Virtually every film that she consented to do, made money at the box-office. For a while, it seemed there was no other leading lady except Hema Malini to challenge Jaya’s rein at the top. “I never thought of all that. I just did the quality and quantity of work that suited me. Then I moved on to look after my home and family. Today when the two boys in my life don’t need my presence that compulsively I’ve taken on the responsibility of being a Rajya Sabha member. That’s so no self-indulgence for me. I take my job as parliamentarian very seriously.” And films? “Where are the roles? Show me challenging roles for an actress my age , and I am game, as I was for ” Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa” or even “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” and ”Kal Ho Na Ho” where I didn’t have much to do. iBut at least there was space for me to breathe in the script. ”Then she looks dreamily out of the window, probably thinking of the dinner guests that night.

Here’s Why Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone Won’t Be on Ramp Together

Shabana Azmi’s annual fashion show in her ancestral village of Mijwan where the biggest names in films, fashion and business come together in solidarity for the annual fundraiser fashion show hosted by the Mijwan Welfare Society, has been postponed. Both of Shabana’s showstoppers Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have fallen ill. Says Shabana, “It is so bizarre. But we are keeping the faith alive and waiting for them to recover and get back on their feet. Until then…que sera sera. I am cracking jokes and keeping my very young and vibrant show-organizing team’s spirits up. They’ve been working round the clock to ensure the annual event goes well. I am keeping them regaled with jokes, biryani and chocolate waffles. We’re waiting for Ranbir and Deepika to recover and then the show must go on.” Designer Manish Malhotra was all set to put up a spectacular fashion show ‘The Walk Of Mijwan’ on 9th April 2018 showcasing the exquisite craft of Chikankari by Mijwan's women, fashioned into contemporary silhouettes by Manish in his signature style. This was the 9th annual fundraiser for Mijwan in support of the movement started by Late Kaifi Azmi in 1993. Ranbir Kapoor, Goodwill Ambassador of the Mijwan annual event since 2014 was to walk the ramp along with Deepika Padukone. But as Shabana sighs, “Woman Proposes, God Disposes. We are helpless.” 46 | May 18

siderable time. I've learnt a lot from them in our previous collaborations and am excited to see what this one has to offer. I'm also looking forward to working with Alvira and Atul and the entire team of Bharat. To all my well-wishers who've been so patient and supportive... thank you for your constant support and I'll see you all at the movies!" Director Ali Abbas Zafar says, `Bharat is Priyanka's homecoming to Bollywood after having proven her range as a performer in Hollywood films and a blockbuster global TV show. Bharat is rooted in India and its culture despite it spanning over 70 years and set across various countries of the world. Priyanka is the biggest Indian artist internationally and she is a perfect fit for the film. Priyanka brings in outstanding acting as well as incredible international appeal to make the scale of the film bigger and even more global.` Ali Abbas Zafar and producer Atul Agnihotri travelled to New York to meet Priyanka and gave her the narration of the film. Priyanka loved Ali's script and she was convinced immediately to do the film. Salman and Priyanka will be teaming up after 10 years making the association all the more special. Atul Agnihotri who is collaborating with Priyanka for the first time shares, `We are all very happy to welcome Priyanka to the “Bharat” family. We couldn't have asked for anyone better than her to play this role.` Ali, who has directed Priyanka in “Gunday” before, adds, `We have found the soul of “Bharat” in Priyanka Chopra. As the love story in “Bharat” is very mature and quite subtle, we needed an actor who could portray this in the best possible way. Her character is the soul of the film, and throughout, she stands shoulder to shoulder with Salman Khan in the journey. She is the catalyst at the film's most important turning point.` Meanwhile, this is the third time that Salman Khan and Ali have teamed up. The record-breaking superstar-director duo has earlier made the blockbusters “Sultan” and “Tiger Zinda Hai”. T-Series' producer Bhushan Kumar shares, `We are very happy that the best of talents are coming together for Bharat. It is a beautiful story and we are very excited to start the journey with the entire team.` 'Bharat' has started its prep in London, after which director Ali Abbas Zafar will move to Spain, Poland, Portugal, and Malta. The film will feature Salman Khan sporting five different looks spanning 60 years, wherein a crucial part will showcase the actor in his late 20s, looking much leaner and younger. Salman Khan will be recreating his 'Karan Arjun' look which has created immense excitement amongst the audience. Salman Khan is known to treat his fans on festive seasons. While this year will witness Salman Khan's 'Race 3' hitting the screens, with 'Bharat' the actor has yet again booked the upcoming Eid for himself offering a festive bonanza to the audience. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, produced by Atul Agnihotri's Reel Life Production Pvt. Ltd and Bhushan Kumar's T-Series releasing Eid 2019. 49 | May 18

'Mom' Actress Sajal Aly Lashes Out at Pakistan's Biggest Award Show Pakistani actress Sajal Aly -- who famously played Sridevi's daughter in the national award winning role 'Mom' - has lashed out at award shows in Pakistan for ill-treatment of stars and ridiculing them. According to Dawn, Sajal Aly has lashed out at hosts and organisers of Pakistan's biggest award shows for ill-treating actors and ridiculing them. Sajal received two nominations in the Best Actress category but lost to 'Hindi Medium' actress Saba Qamar, who bagged the award for starring in slain Pakistani model Qandeel Baloch's biopic. Sajal was a good sport and showed support to Saba but what disturbed her was the 'ridiculing' of actors during the award ceremony. “I feel like we have gradually gone from treating awards as an evening of celebration of good work and art to ridiculing actors and our industry. I was quite disappointed," Sajal told Pakistani newspaper Dawn. “It might sound harsh, but unfortunately that’s the reality. Actors were treated as subjects of humiliation and were used for cheap laughs. I may also sound like I’m ranting, but does no one go over the script and point out whether something is a bit much?” Sajal said. “Not a lot of actors attend the awards in the first place and slowly that number will grow. I know I don’t want to be disrespected for the sake of a show’s rating, "she added. Sajal became a known face in Bollywood because of her path-breaking performance as Sridevi's daughter in Ravi Udyawar's 'Mom'. 51 | May 18

Salman Khan’s “Race 3” May Not Return to the UAE for Shoot

Producer Ramesh Taurani and director Remo d’Souza have reason to rejoice, though conditionally. “Race 3” the film that they are in the process of completing with Salman Khan in the lead, is now in the safe zone, what with the Superstar being granted bail for the black buck poaching case. But there is a catch. Salman won’t be allowed to shoot outside India without the Honourable court’s permission. Rather than go through the arduous task of getting the relevant permission to head to exotic locations, Salman and his producer-director have now decided to shoot in India. To rewind a bit, there were action scenes to be shot in handpicked locations across the world. Last month, the entire cast was in Abu Dhabi for the shoot. “But now after the Jodhpur experience , Salman’s producer and director have decided to shoot those scenes in India,” says a source close to the film, adding that Salman at this juncture is looking at staying as close to home as possible. 52 | May 18

Shah Rukh Khan to Work With Sanjay Leela Bhansali Next

Shah Rukh Khan, who is currently filming for “Zero”, had earlier revealed that he will think of his next project only after he completes Aanand L Rai’s directorial which will wrap in a month. As per a report in Mid-Day, SRK is already in advanced talks with “Padmaavat” filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his next. “Not many know that Shah Rukh and Bhansali have been in talks for long. During a recent meeting, the director narrated his script to him. It is a fictional love story with a period setting. While Shah Rukh has given his nod in principle, the project is facing a road block by way of its female lead. Though the names of a few leading ladies are being thrown around, Bhansali is yet to zero in on an actress," a source revealed to the daily. Shah Rukh might shoot for “Salute” from September to November, take a break for the promotions of “Zero” and then resume “Salute” early January 2019. Well, we wait for any official confirmation from the actor’s end. 54 | May 18

Shatrughan Sinha: “Salman Doesn’t Deserve This”

Salman Khan may have been released on bail in the black buck poaching case but the last two days were nightmarish for the family. As India’s biggest star spent his first (sleepless) night in a prison in Jodhpur,, back home in Mumbai friends, relatives and well-wishers continued to pour into the Khan’s residence at Galaxy Apartments in Bandra, Mumbai. Salman’s mother was not attending to guests. She had gone to sleep after hearing the numbing news about her son. But his father Salim Khan was there to attend to the guests. And in great spirits, Says Shatrughan Sinha, a family friend and self-professed well-wisher of Salman and his family, “My daughter Sonakshi reached Salman’s home much earlier than me and spent a lot more time with the family. We are very close to the Khan family and have the highest regards for Salman and his parents. I spent a lot of time with Salim Saab that evening. It is always a pleasure to spend time with him. He is so well-informed. I call him Salim Pandit. The current crisis (Salman’s imprisonment) has not made him lose his sense of humour at all. He was full of life and very optimistic about his son’s release soon. ” Well, the optimism wasn’t misplaced as Salman was granted bail. Shatrughan Sinha thinks the court verdict has been harsh. “With due respects to the legal process and to the honourable judge, I feel Salman has suffered enough.” 56 | May 18

However the actor-politician refuses to sympathize with producers whose films may be stuck if Salman is imprisoned. “They knew what they were getting into. They knew there was a serious court case hanging over him. They went into their projects with Salman with their eyes open. We can’t say, ‘Don’t send him to prison because the under-production projects will suffer.’ Every convict that goes to prison leaves behind unfinished projects. Why is an incomplete multi-crore film more important than a house that an incarcerated architect leaves unbuilt, or a novel that an author leaves unwritten?” Shatruji feels Salman is paying a price for being the Salman Khan. “I really feel Salman is being punished for being who he is. If he was a commoner he would not have to suffer for twenty-five years for a crime he may or may not have committed.” Adds actor Samir Soni whose wife Neelam was also accused in the same black-buck case, “Your stardom or celebrity status goes against you when people try to make an example of you to deter others. It's a double-edged sword, it's fine when it's with you but when it's against, it cuts deep. Salman paid the price for being Salman.” 58 | May 18

Sajid Khan Refuses To Work With Jacqueline Fernandez In “Housefull 4” Sajid Nadiadwala had promised the entire cast of the Housefull franchise in the fourth instalment which begins shooting later this year. And sure enough, the enterprising producer has been able to accumulate in “Housefull 4”, almost every prominent actor who has worked in the three Housefull films so far. Except for one actor, and that’s Jacqueline Fernandez. For all his efforts, Nadiadwala has not been able to get Ms Fernandez on board, as the director of the fourth part Sajid Khan is “personally and professionally” incompatible with the actress. Nadiadwala who was aware of Jacqueline’s past history with Sajid Khan didn’t foresee the trouble that lay ahead when he resolved to bring all the Housefull actors on board for Part 4. Jacqueline who was “close friends” with Sajid in the past, was given a guest appearance in the first Housefull film in 2010. This was followed by a full fledged role in Housefull 2 in 2012 , Thereafter she had a fall-out with Sajid Khan but she was nevertheless included in Housefull 3 because the producer Sajid Nadiadwala had a fall-out with Sajid Khan who was replaced by the brothers Sajid-Farhad as directors in “Housefull 3”. Now that Sajid Khan is back directing “Housefull 4” there is no way Jacqueline could be a part of the franchise. Says a source very close to the franchise, “The choice was very clear for Sajid Nadiadwala. He had to either choose Sajid Khan or Jacqueline Fernandez since this former couple refused to work with one another. Nadiadwala who has a great working relationship with Jacqueline—she has been part of Nadiadwala’s “Housefull”, “Housefull 2”, “Housefull 3”, “Dishoom” and “Baaghi 2”—had to sacrifice her for “Housefull 4.” 62 | May 18

Ranveer Singh: ‘I Definitely Want to Make More Money’

Superstar Ranveer Singh was bestowed the ‘Entertainment Leader of the Year Award’ at the 13th edition of CNBC TV-18 India Business Leader Awards, held in Delhi a few days ago. Speaking at the event, the elated actor said, “Standing at a business leaders awards show and getting an award here, I would like to say that I definitely want to make more money. In fact, my father keeps complaining that I make less money than my popularity. However, more than making money for myself, I want Hindi films to make more money. ‘Bahubali 2’ has done a great business and it has shown the potential. We are definitely on the right track and there is no reason why our films should not be doing as well as China’s. I would also try to put my best foot forward, be the best entertainer and put a mark on the world stage.” On being asked to choose between Alauddin Khilji and Bajirao, the actor known for his quirky remarks, said that he would choose Bajirao over Khilji because Bajirao was a better person. Ranveer who is playing a rapper in his upcoming film “Gully Boy”, also said that Jay Z was his favourite rapper. Ranveer began his career with Yashraj Films’ Band Baaja Baaraat, and has continued to deliver blockbuster films while enthralling the viewers with his pure talent. His work in films such as “Lootera”, “Dil Dhadakne Do”, “Bajirao Mastani” and the very recent “Padmaavat”, has been highly appreciated by the audience and the critics alike. 64 | May 18

Tiger Shroff’s Sister Krishna: ‘Tiger Has Brought Something New into the Industry”

Not mom Ayesha Shroff, not friend Disha Patani. The most important woman in Tiger Shroff’s life is his sister Krishna Shroff. And the proud sister just can’t stop raving over Tiger and his film “Baaghi 2”. Krishna feels Tiger’s uniqueness as an actor has impeded his stardom. “I feel Tiger brought something so new into the industry along with his launch, and he does what nobody else in the industry can do with his action and dance . Because of this newness to his personality, the other parts of his performances tend to get overshadowed.” “Baaghi 2”, says the proud sister has changed that perception. “This is by far my favorite PERFORMANCE of his, and after watching the film and how powerful his overall performance is in it, I told him that I’ve never been prouder of him.” When it comes to a shared life, Krishna comes closest to Tiger . The proud protective sister exults, "I am extremely grateful to have a brother like Tiger. He's so inspiring, not just in the way that he handles his professional life, but more for the person he is.” Krishna got a chance to work closely with Tiger when she assisted director Sabir Khan on Munna Michael. “Having the opportunity to have worked with him on an entire film made me strive to better myself overall too. Over the past year, we've become closer than ever. I don't think there's a single person on this planet whom I love more. Tiger and I are best friends, so there's nobody that he trusts more when it comes to his craft. Spending so much time around him motivates and inspires me to work harder.” As for plans to direct her own film Krishna says, “I am not a big planner . For now I am definitely enjoying what I am doing. I’m proud to say I have a small part in my brother’s career.” 66 | May 18

Did You Know Saif Ali Khan’s Father Was Also Accused of Hunting a Black Buck

Saif Ali Khan's father and former cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi was also accused of killing blackbuck by the police a few years ago. Pataudi had gone on a hunting expedition in the forests of Haryana's Jhajjar district in 2005 on June 5 - the World Environment Day. They were formally charged when Pataudi and six of the hunting party were intercepted by the station house officer of Jhajjar. The police recovered the carcasses of a female blackbuck and rabbits from two of their vehicles. The police also recovered a 22-bore rifle that was supposedly used for hunting. The rifle was registered in the name of Pataudi's daughter and Saif Ali Khan's sister Soha Ali Khan. Later in 2009, Gurgaon's district magistrate had cancelled Soha Ali Khan's arms licence for violating the rules. A special environment court in Faridabad pronounced its verdict nine years later in January 2015. Six persons of Pataudi's hunting party were convicted and sentenced to three years in jail in the poaching case. The environment court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the convicts. During the trial Pataudi senior died in 2011, following which his name was removed from the list of accused. 68 | May 18

"Saif Has Brought in a New Angle in Kareena's Life Which Makes Her More Fun And Interesting": Faraz Manan Ace Pakistani designer Faraz Manan on the modern day bride, his association with Bollywood and his special bond with Kareena Kapoor "Saif Has Brought in a New Angle in Kareena's Life Which Makes Her More Fun And Interesting": Faraz Manan One of the most sought-after couturiers in the region, who has now successfully secured his spot on the global fashion map, joining the likes of Elie Saab among others, Faraz Manan is truly a name to reckon with. Kareena Kapoor swears by him, he is Mahira Khan’s favourite, he was the last designer to have created couture for Sridevi, and even the likes of Nita Ambani appreciate his designs. In the Middle East of course, from royal families to society divas, everyone wants a piece of Faraz Manan in their closet. Renowned for his bridal, luxury and ready- to-wear collections, Faraz has also captured the popular ‘lawn’ market worldwide, and his sold- out catalogue on his website is testimony to its success. One step into the designer’s plush store in Jumeirah, and it’s easy to judge what the brand Faraz Manan stands for – subtle extravagance. Amidst hues of his signature pastels, we sat at his luxury flagship store discussing his passion to dress brides and his association with the who’s who of Bollywood. Tell us a little about your latest collection… My summer couture collection is inspired by French art décor. Art décor, because it is luxurious, and a practical, modern approach towards vintage design. The collection depicts history and that’s what relates to me the most. My forte is fusion; for me that could be the meeting of the old and the new or the east and the west. My brand’s philosophy is fusion and that’s why I chose Dubai. This city defines fusion – being a melting pot of so many cultures and nationalities. In that regard this collection, called Lumière (meaning Light in French), puts all those different elements together. It is full of intricate rich embroidery, soft fabrics and calmer colour palettes to suit the summer collection. What sets Lumière apart from your previous summer collections? The previous summer couture collection was called Mirage, which was mainly inspired by the beauty of Arabia. This collection is again very close to my heart, especially because of its 70 | May 18

Continued on Page 72->

71 | May 18

Continued from Page 70-> universal, authentic appeal. Mirage was very different to Lumière, where each garment is more structured with a lot more sparkle! Any piece from Lumière is sure to make any bride glow. What do you keep in mind when creating each collection? Is there any element that remains constant in them? First and foremost, it’s wearability. Practicality is very important, don’t go over the top! If I do a heavily embellished outfit (which I LOVE), I’ll control it with a subtle colour. You’ll never spot a bright, loud Faraz Manan creation. My current favourite is colour on colour – like the all-red sari Jacqueline Fernandez wore on Diwali last year. I made the India/ Pakistan classic red appeal to an international audience and that was a winning moment for me as a designer. Jacqueline Fernandez's red sari from last Diwali was much talked about. Brides are now trying to break free from tradition. How challenging is that for you as a designer? That’s not really challenging. It’s the right way to take bridal fashion forward. We can’t impose our culture on the younger generation. We have to adopt change. Having said that, if a bride has to wear red, then she should cut down on the gold. We are all proud of our tradition, but for today’s bride looking good, along with being relatable, is most important. There’s a difference between wearing a costume and wearing a dress, which should be an extension of your own personality. What are those bridal elements you don’t want to see changing? Our embellishment and embroideries which are the best in the world! They are pieces of art, that speak volumes of our tradition and history. Embroidery is like heirloom, there’s a story behind each thread. India, for me is colour, whereas Pakistan is all about embroidery and embellishment, and while both of these countries appreciate each other’s forte, the art lies in bringing them together. Many Indian clients come to me for my deep understanding about embellishment, and many Pakistani brides choose Indian designers for their colour treatment, along with the drama and oomph they bring to each outfit. When it comes to embroidery, we usually engage 2-3 skilled artisans on each bridal outfit, which takes around six months to create. Sometimes we have 100 people working 12 hours a day to bring alive my vision of a bridal couture piece! Brides take a lot of pressure to look great on their big day, and this is only increasing with time. What are your thoughts? The first thing that a bride-to-be dreams about, is her wedding dress. Girls are probably more excited about the dress, as compared to the whole wedding itself! But then that’s the beauty of being a woman right? It’s one day that every bride wants to dress up to be remembered. But yes, it’s true that brides are under a lot of pressure. They are too confused with what they want, and eventually end up spoiling the outfit. The best brides are those who tell me what they like, and then leave the rest to me. Every designer wants to do his best, since his brand’s reputation is on the line! Often, families impose their desires on the bride, but the 72 | May 18 Continued on Page 74->

Continued from Page 72-> magic is when you balance their expectations along with what the bride actually wants. I have my way with both, the brides and their mothers or mother-in-law (laughs). The whole ‘Bridezilla’ tag is for real these days. How do you manage their anxiety as a designer? It’s a constant challenge and I have learnt to deal with it after all these years! If something with the outfit isn’t right, I’m not one to keep quiet about it. I would rather politely decline the offer, than work on a design that goes against my sensibilities. Both the designer and the bride have to be in sync for the best results. How does the bridal consultation process go? Here in Dubai, I have qualified staff, who is experienced to handle general orders. But for bridals and special occasions, they have the initial meeting, and then they line up meetings for me. With connectivity being so easy now, it has become increasingly convenient to coordinate. Brides fly in from Mumbai or Delhi and I fly in from Lahore, and we meet at my Dubai design studio. Moving over to Bollywood, tell us about your association with your favourite muse, Kareena Kapoor Khan. I have been working with Kareena for the last five years and before that with Karisma for three years. Our association is about connecting on different aspects of life, not just fashion. We connect on most things, from family values, to food to culture. I have known the family for nine years now, Karisma is quite shy but I met Bebo through her. I love how close both the sisters are. Also, Saif has brought in a new angle in Kareena’s life which makes her all the more fun and interesting as a subject to work with. When you work with stars, there comes a possibility of a clash, between you and the other designers they work with. How does that equation work? It’s again all about being honest. There is possessiveness but sometimes relationships are much more than just that. Even though I love the models I work with, there can never be a Kareena-Faraz relationship with them, because our relationship is much more than just work. We understand each other on a personal level. For me Bebo is a woman of today, an ideal Faraz Manan woman who values culture and history. She’s proud of her family, is a working mother and is married to a Nawab – which itself brings in a certain mysterious element to her being. Since our relationship is so thick, there is hardly space for insecurity. I would never stop Bebo from wearing another designer, neither would she ever stop me from working with other actresses. You were the last designer who designed for Sridevi before her untimely death. What were you working on? My first interaction with Sridevi was at the Masala! Awards, which is when she first showed interest in my work and visited my store in Jumeirah. We met and spoke for almost 2-3 74 | May 18 Continued on Page 76->

I am happy that I got to interact with her on such a personal level, but really sad that she’s gone. In these two months, she really opened up to me. In fact, she had even invited me to the Mohit Marwah wedding, but I was shooting in Miami at the time. On my way back I was in transit and she asked me to dinner, but I couldn’t make it to that either since I was flying back to Lahore. The second day after I had landed in Lahore this incident took place. It’s so heart-breaking! Moving on, I think everyone should celebrate the amazing person that she was. Sridevi knew so much about fabric and embroidery. She loved fashion. She loved to dress up and would become a child again when it came to dressing up. She wanted me to be a regular feature in her wardrobe, and that enriched our short, special bond. I’m glad she could wear my creations at least twice. Who is the one unmarried Bollywood celebrity you think would make the perfect Faraz Manan bride? Deepika Padukone! I would love to dress her up as a bride. She is stunning, in the true sense of the word. In fact, she’s the only celebrity who hasn’t worn my creation yet. From Priyanka Chopra to Jacqueline Fernandez, I have worked with everyone.

The Price of Being Salman Khan

Five years in prison. But wait. Are Salman Khan and his fans grieving? If the verdict in the black buck case was meant to shake Salman Khan, then sorry, the shock treatment didn’t work. Salman apparently stood straight, looking unmoved as the judge convicted him for killing two black bucks in 1998. Three years ago Salman was acquitted in the hit-and-run case by the Bombay Hight CourtThe relief came 13 years of wait for Salman and his family for the ordeal to end. True to character Salman had shown no emotion when the honourable judge announced the acquittal. Again the Mighty Khan stood unfazed as he was convicted. Says a buddy of the superstar, “That’s Salman for you. He won’t give anyone the benefit of seeing him vulnerable, not even the judge, though he otherwise cries like a baby at the drop of a hat. In fact after the verdict, when the family rallied around him, Salman broke down and wept copiously.” Salman Khan won’t go to jail that easily. His fan base is confident that their Bhai can do no wrong. His family is solidly behind him. Father Salim Khan and brothers Sohail and Arbaaz have already started to consult a battery of lawyers for the next level of action. Personally, I’ve never seen Salman shaken by anything . He is prone to extremes of emotions and he will hate you for not hating those whom he hates. I remember a conversation with him in my hotel room at 2 am in February 2003 where he was extremely 78 | May 18

upset with his former girlfriend, the stunning beauty who had broken up with him. Apparently, he blamed another superstar for the split. When I refused to agree with Salman, he got upset, walked out of my hotel room with a glass in his hand (Salman drank non-stop throughout the evening) his faithful bodyguard Shera behind him. I’ve to confess I was relieved to see him go at that unearthly hour. But Salman was only pretending to be gone. He came back chuckling like a child who has just been caught with his hand in the candy jar. There is a child within Salman Khan that will never die. You tell that child to shut up, he will shout your roof down. You tell that child to go home, he will stay in your house till the crack of dawn. You tell that child to not shoot at an endangered species. You know what he will do. This is a tough situation for Salman’s family and his producers. Remo D’Souza’s “Race 3” was racing to a finish. Now a brake would have to be applied.Another magnum opus entitled “Bharat” directed Ali Abbas Zafar with Salman was about to go on the floors later this year. While Salman’s buddy Sajid Nadiadwala was planning “Kick 2”. I guess God had planned another kick altogether. Milte hai, break ke baad 'We Were Not Prepared for This At All': Salman Khan's Family Friend Post his Conviction in Black Buck Case How the verdict affected his near and dear ones.... 'We Were Not Prepared for This At All': Salman Khan's Family Friend Post his Conviction in Black Buck Case. Superstar Salman Khan was convicted for the 1999 blackbuck case at the Jodhpur court. The verdict came as a complete shock to his friends and family . Minutes after the verdict, Salman’s sister’s Alvira and Arpita who were in the courtroom were seen looking numb and disbelieving. While further developments on the verdict are awaited (it’s been reported he will apply for bail and get it too), a close friend of Salman who’s also a top notch producer feels this is not entirely unexpected. “I guess it is a price you have for being Salman Khan. Right now I am too dazed to say anything.” While Salman’s father, Salim Khan was told about the honourable court’s verdict immediately after it was pronounced, Salman’s mother was not informed immediately. “Of course Salma Aunty will come to know soon enough. But we haven’t told her the verdict,” said a family friend, adding that the court’s decision came as “bolt from the blue” for the superstar’s family and friends. However when news of Salman getting a two-year sentence with a provision for a bail application came in there were we-told-you-so whispers. “We were not prepared for this at all,” said a family-friend. “We were much more apprehensive about the verdict in the hit-and-run case. When Bhai was cleared of all charges in that, we heaved a sigh of relief thinking this (the black bucks case) would be relatively simpler.” Not one of Salman’s friends and family members wanted to comment on record. Singer-actor and BJP cabinet minister Baabul Supriyo who has sung a number songs for Salman is all for the law having its way. “It's not really about an individual or whether he is convicted or exonerated. In this democratic country, the judiciary delivers its verdict after allowing fair trials in the courts. As someone who has sung several songs for Salman Khan, nurturing fond memories of many a world tour, I am sad at his conviction but then the law of the land applies to all and rules are supreme irrespective of social status, mighty, high or low.” 79 | May 18

Ouch! Kim Sharma Accused of Not Returning a Car

A Mumbai businessman has filed complaint with the Mumbai Police saying that former Bollywood actress Kim Sharma is not returning his Range Rover SUV Car. Dilip Kumar, a Rajasthan-based businessman, alleges that the luxury SUV actually belongs to him and that it has been in the possession of Kim illegally. Kumar even alleges that the actress has refused to return the SUV even after many requests. Dilip has filed a complaint with the police. According to report on a website, Kim Sharma, on the other hand, claims the possession of the Range Rover SUV by stating that it’s a gift from her estranged husband Ali Punjani. As per the police report, Kumar used to travel to Mumbai on numerous occasions and had his vehicle parked at Punjani’s Khar residence. However, in his absence, Kim started commuting in the luxury SUV. Kumar reportedly filed a complaint with the cops in September last year, as per the website's (cartoq.com) report. However, Ali Punjani’s name was mentioned in the report instead of the actor’s. It is now being said that the businessman has made a fresh complaint against Kim Sharma. The Mumbai police is investigating the case. 82 | May 18

Here's Where Sonam Kapoor Will Finally be Tying the Knot

According to reports, Sonam Kapoor’s wedding planners have cancelled the plans of celebrating her wedding in Montreux, Switzerland. Instead it will be hosted at a five-star property near the Airport or at a five-star hotel very near Shah Rukh Khan's home in Mumbai.Sources say that the Switzerland hotel and flights could not be arranged and hence the wedding venue was shifted to Mumbai. Apart from the fact that it is economical, the wedding will be accessible to most celebrities as well. "We are looking at a hotel in Juhu since it is near Sonam's house. We might also look at Bandra or Santacruz if the Juhu hotel deal doesn't work out. Otherwise, there are no other options. There's not much to worry in Mumbai because once the hotel is locked, they will take over the entire responsibilities of venue, transport and security. So, having it in Mumbai was a better option than going to Switzerland. Sonam and Anand Ahuja won't waste their Swiss all-time pass. Sources say that they are going there for their honeymoon. It seems like the wedding preparations are in full swing! We can’t wait to see how gorgeous Sonam looks as a bride on her big day! 84 | May 18

No Relief for Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in AIB Roast Case

The Bombay High Court declined to grant any relief to Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor over an FIR filed against them for 'AIB Knockout' in 2015. The FIR against them will continue to remain operative. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor approached the High Court earlier this year after they received summons from the Pune police, directing them to visit the police station for questioning and recording their statements. A bench of Justices R M Savant and Sarang Kotwal directed the actors' lawyer to seek the assent of the Acting Chief Justice V K Tahilramani's court for the matter to be heard along with two other related pleas. In February, 2015, Sateesh Daundkar filed a complaint with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of the Girgaon court, claiming the show was "vulgar, obscene and pornographic". The court then ordered that an FIR be registered against all the ten people. The other plea is a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a law teacher from Mumbai. The PIL seeks action against the organisers and participants of the show, and also urges the High Court to direct the state authorities to issue guidelines to monitor such programmes on YouTube and similar video networks. The bench, however, said it will consider the prayer once all the three pleas were tagged together and assigned for further hearing by the Acting CJI's court. On December, 20, 2014, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, along with eight other celebrities, including director-producer-actor Karan Johar, actress Deepika Padukone and members of the AIB team had performed at a charity event in Worli. A video of the event was subsequently uploaded on YouTube which went viral. 86 | May 18

Tiger Shroff: ‘It’s a Joy When Your Hard Work Pays Off’

“ It won’t be easy for Tiger Shroff to get over the Baaghi hangover. Baaghi 2” is the biggest opener of 2018 and the youngest superstar of Bollywood is over the moon. “We all worked so hard on the film. It’s always a joy when your hard work pays off. We did expect the film to do well. But not this!!!” Tiger now moves to Student Of The Year for which Karan Johar wants the young actor to give a looks test. Explains Tiger, “It’s basically a debate on whether I should keep my long hair or not. My cropped hair look has really been liked in Baaghi 2. My hair has grown back again since we shot for that film. As Karan Johar Sir really likes my Baaghi look I may cut my hair again for “Student Of The Year 2”. The important thing is that I look like a student, with or without the hair.” Working in “Student Of The Year 2” is a big high for Tiger. “Being in a Karan Johar production is every young actor’s dream. I started my career with Sajid Nadiadwala Sir (“Heropanti”) and now it’s Karan Johar in my sixth film. I couldn’t have asked for more.” 88 | May 18

"My Instagram is Filled With Marriage Proposals": Kartik Aaryan

It’s not often that a single monologue can propel you to the public eye. But that’s exactly what happened with Kartik Aaryan. His lengthy rant against women in what has become a cult classic, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, brought him in the spotlight a few years ago. Of course, being a trending topic alone is not exactly ‘stardom’ but in a deeply nepotistic industry, the newcomer stood out and was talked about. However, 2018 has changed all that. This year’s surprise hit Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety – his third film with director Luv Ranjan whose ‘helpless men in the trap of wicked women’ formula has paid rich dividends at the box office – has finally made Kartik a star. He is now papped regularly and recently even walked the ramp for Manish Malhotra. The young actor tells us how things changed for him. Finally it has happened. Your film is a huge success. Has it been a long struggle? Before entering the industry, a senior had once told me that it takes 7 to 8 years to make your identity in Mumbai. It may sound like a long time but trust me you won’t even realise how fast it goes. But I feel you need to go through your own journey of struggle. It teaches you a lot about life and makes you value things more. I used to travel from Navi Mumbai to Andheri for auditions by local train everyday. I used to get ready in railway stations’ washroom. But I had no option. But today I feel happy and proud when I look back at those days. You say your mom is your best friend. But don’t you have anyone special? Yes, mom is my best friend. I share every bit of my personal and professional life with her and she always gives me the best advice. I’m not single at all. I’m in a committed relationship with my fans. I will keep doing good work to make this relationship grow. 92 | May 18 Continued on Page 94->

Continued from Page 92-> As an outsider, what is your advice to newcomers from small towns? Your town can’t decide your dreams. Small cities have a different kind of driving force, they actually make you dream big. Being in Gwalior (MP), who would have thought that I would be here on the big screen? You just have to believe in yourself, have a little patience and work hard. Ziddi bano. Nothing is impossible to achieve. How has your life changed now? Oh yes, I have become far busier! I get scolded from my mom because I’m not able to sleep or eat on time. But I’m enjoying it. Every actor dreams for this day and finally, for me it’s here. I enjoy going to the theatres to see the audience reaction. I feel happy when they shout out my name. I’m enjoying the kind of love I’m getting from everyone, especially girls! My Instagram and FB is filled with marriage proposals. I love reading them all. Strangely the films you’ve done outside Luv Ranjan’s domain have all been failures. How do you plan to change that? Success and failure is not in anyone’s hand. It’s a by-product. Apart from the “Pyaar Ka Punchnaama” series and “Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety”, if you see, Luv sir and I did a film, “Aakashvani” together. That’s our favourite but it didn’t work. We all do a film if we like the script. And then we give our hundred percent to it. Some films do wonders at the box-office and some don’t. And there is no set formula. Would you destroy your best friend’s marriage the way Sonu is shown to do in the film? I wouldn’t say Sonu destroyed his friend’s marriage. I’d say he protected his best friend from a gold digger. And yes, I’d do the same, if push comes to shove. I don’t fear being judged as a misogynist. Because that’s my character Sonu they are judging, not me! Thankfully the audience is flocking to see the film without getting judgmental about the 94 | May 18

gender equations shown in it. Would I do a film like this again? I’d do it as many times as Luv Ranjan wants me to. There is a lot of debate over nepotism in Bollywood these days. Do you think your journey would have been easier if you were the son of a producer? It would have been easier to get the first film but at the end of the day in order to sustain in this industry, it’s your hardwork and talent that counts. It’s a business and in the long run, no one will put money on you just because you are someone’s son. Luv Ranjan believed in you… Luv Sir stood by me through all these years. It takes a lot of guts to stand by someone you believe in when he is not a big star. He very clearly told producers it’s me and Nushrat Bharucha and no one else. I wonder where I’d have been in this lonely city without someone to believe in my talent. Not that I would have ever given up. I believed in myself. You have to believe in yourself, only then can you expect others to believe in you. What’s your one ambition this year? To buy a bigger home so that my family can move in with me. Right now my best friend (Mom) has to keep shuttling between Mumbai and Gwalior because my father and sister are in Gwalior. I want all of us to stay together in Mumbai. It’s my one dream this year. It would be so nice to have my own family to come home to every day. Not that I am without friends in Mumbai. I have a very small group of friends. And my best friend lives in New Mumbai. You can say he is the real-life Titu in Sunny’s life. Are you enjoying your stardom? I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the attention. I’ve waited long for this. I now have an insane number of scripts to read. The offers are juicy and tempting. But I intend to move forward carefully. I don’t want to get carried away.

"John Was Rude," Producer Prernaa Arora Lashes Out At Her “Parmanu” Partner

It now threatens to become one of the ugliest fall-outs in the Indian entertainment industry, with actor-producer John Abraham trading public insults with producer Prernaa Arora of KriArj Entertainment. The two parties collaborated over the forthcoming true-life political drama “Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran”. But the drama being played out between the two in real life threatens to get far more dramatic and murky. 96 | May 18 Continued on Page 98->

97 | May 18

Continued from Page 96-> After issuing public notices against one another, John and Prernaa are now locked in a fierce verbal duel which now has gotten extremely ugly after John accused Prernaa of financial irregularities and defaulting on commitments. He has also referred to her as a “trader” who “came into the business with a lot of money that has now whittled off.” Reacting sharply to John’s accusation, Prernaa Arora retorts, “For John’s information, we are not traders who came in from the outside. My father is a film producer. We’ve been born and brought up in the film industry. I’ve grown up with the best of actors and filmmakers, watching all the great movies over the decades. Hindi cinema is part of my genes. John, with due respects, couldn’t speak a line of Hindi when he came into the film industry. So who is the trader from the outside? And what is wrong with being a trader?” Prernaa says she has taken enough insults from John. “I’ve been polite and well-behaved throughout this whole ugly episode with Mr John Abraham. I’ve been brought up to respect everyone .Please ask Mr John when have I ever spoken to him badly? On the other hand he has been extremely rude and discourteous to me on many occasions. I don’t want to play the woman’s card. But I’d like to ask John would he dare to talk to any big-name male producer the way he has spoken to me on so many occasions? On several occasions, I’ve been reduced to tears because of his obnoxious behaviour. I hate myself for sounding weak and emotional. This business has no place for soft-hearted people. While John would often be sweet to me on my face I’d hear how he was badmouthing me to all and sundry in the film industry. Sorry, but gentlemen don’t talk like that about women.” Going back to the beginning of her association with John Prernaa says, “Initially John was sweet, gentle and responsive. We decided to co-produce a film. But we couldn’t find the right script. Then I heard the idea for Parmanu when I was in Jaipur. I sent my friend, director Abhishek Sharma to John and before I knew it, the two of them became friends and finalized the film. I was taken aback. I advised John to slow down, meet and discuss before getting into it. But he was excited as he was looking for something exciting to do after Rocky Handsome had bombed. I appreciated his enthusiasm and we agreed to make the film without really pondering on the finer points. Let me tell you, from this point onwards, the director Abhishek Sharma who was my friend, ceased to interact with me. He was only communicating with John. But that’s okay. I was happy that John and Abhishek were getting along so well. The crux was making a good film.” About the contentious budget Prernaa explains, “John Abraham pegged it at Rs 35 crores which was way too high for a film which had no stars except John Abraham.. Anyway, of that 35 crores we’ve already paid John Rs 30 crores, 3 crores will be paid on delivery. It’s just the remaining 2 crores that we at KriArj have been pleading with Mr Abraham to forgo. But he is not willing to budge. Instead of understanding the economics of this project, he accuses me of not understanding the dynamics and economics of film production. Excuse me, I grew up in an environment of film production. I don’t need anyone to wag fingers at me questioning my capabilities as a producer.” Prernaa accuses John of misleading her. “Film production was a new excitement for him when we collaborated on Parmanu. He gave me the impression that he had a whole infrastructure and production team in his production house when in fact he had just one person to take care of all the production work. The entire process of production for Parmanu was outsourced . No major studio was willing to come on board for Parmanu. I got Zee to partner with us. But now with all that is happening I wonder if I made the right decision in collaborating with him.” The last word on this fight is not out yet. John will have his own story to share about the fiasco. Unfortunately, in this issue, it’s a promising project that is suffering. Hope the producer and the actor can sort out their differences soon. 98 | May 18

BAPS Women’s Conference in Dallas, TX focuses on the power of unity Unity is strength. This was the simple yet powerful subject of conversation at this year’s annual BAPS Women’s Conference held at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Dallas, TX, on April 21, 2018. With the thought of unity currently on the minds of many in society, the conferencefocused on the individual’s role in creating a unified nation and global community. The speakers delved into the qualities of humility and positivity and their roles in initiating a more unified mind-frame. Hosted in fourteen cities across North America, the conference aimed to inspire its attendees to bring about change through dialogue and reflection. ShahlaPillai, Manager of Guest Relations at DFW Airport, was the keynote speaker at the conference in Dallas. Reflecting on the importance of the conference, she opined that “Growing up I didn’t have such support…so having women that have paved the way, that can guide us to avoid some of the same pitfalls and give us a better opportunity to better our futures…that alone is a reason to have such events”. The conference began with attendees standing up for both the American and Indian national anthems. The presentations then began with Pooja Solanki emphasizing what unity truly means and why it is essential to achieve it. While there are more apparent benefits one can claim from integration, the speaker focused on how the small and incremental actions of individuals can lead to a more unified family, which can in turn influence a community and even society at large. The other two speakers for the conference concentrated on two instrumental traits that can be further developed to create unity within our relationships – that of humility and positivity. Affirming that humility is not a fixed trait, but one that should be practiced and developed, Dr. Jyoti Patel discussed the small, everyday steps that can be taken to practice humility. Using her personal experiences and quoting those she gained inspiration from, Rina Rao explained how humility strengthens through service and tolerance. Finally, Gopi Patel closed out the conference with a compelling talk on the power of positivity. The speakers, just like the audience, were from various professional and personal diasporas and yet were able to come together to bring about an environment for dialogue for self-reflection and growth. Attendee Julie Mitchell reflected on her experience "it is a beautiful celebration of women and unity and love". The BAPS Women’s Conferencewas inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj and encouraged by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj. The conference highlights the influential role of women in today’s society and also empowers the younger generations by promoting a healthy dialogue around current topics. Before and after the conference, attendees had the opportunity to network with others from the greater community and share their perspective on the talks of the day. Many in attendance felt inspired by the conference and conveyed their motivation to share the word with their family and friends. The audience left with the message that while unity may seem like a global concept, the power of change, and the power of creating a more unified world lies within everyone. Actor Gurmeet Choudhary Stalked by a Man! A “fan”—if one may call such fanatics by such a mild name—has threatened to commit suicide. And actor Gurmeet Choudhary is nonplussed as to how to react to such fan frenzy. He said, “I’m not a stranger to fan attention. I do have my share of admirers and fans. To me they are God. Whatever I am, whatever I’ve achieved is because of them. I owe my career to them. But then I also have the right to some privacy. There has to be some area of my life that fans cannot enter.” Gurmeet confesses he has had his share of intrusive fans. “But they’ve mostly been women, asking me to do all kinds of things with them. This is the first time I’ve been stalked down by a man. I don’t know how to react because he threatened to kill himself and then he says there is danger to my life too. So I don’t know what he wants to do. Kill me or kill himself.” Gurmeet blames this era of a widespread social-media network for direct access to stars and celebrities. “Earlier fans didn’t know stars’ whereabouts. Now everyone knows where we are. This man who wants to kill himself or kill me or whatever, knew I was in Dubai for an event with my wife Debina when this whole thing broke out.” Gurmeet is worried about his wife and family. “I am not scared for myself. I can take care of myself. But what about my family? I can’t be with my wife all the time. What if this stalker tracks her down somewhere? This is why I say it is both flattering and scary to have devoted fans.”Gurmeet gives full credit to the Mumbai police for taking charge of his and his family’security. “I can’t tell you all the details of the security arrangement. But the Mumbai police has been truly supportive and I feel my family is safe. I just don’t want this misguided man to come to any harm or cause any harm. He claims some man is threatening my life. I don’t how much he is imagining and how much of what he says is true. But the amount of information that he has on me and my movements is every frightening.” This man first tried to get in touch with Gurmeet through his manager. “He said he wanted to talk to me. But when I sensed something wrong I stopped him. That’s when all this desperation started. I want to ask him to please stop. This kind of overbearing adulation is not welcome. 104 | May 18

No Film For Bhansali With Jhanvi Kapoor; Here's The Truth About Their 'Meeting'

A few days ago the paparazzi was click-happy showing the late (and much missed) Sridevi’s two daughters Jhanvi and Khushi emerging from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s office building. Speculators were on overdrive imagining a film collaboration between Bhansali and Sri’s beti, Jhanvi. But here’s the truth about Jhanvi’s supposed visit to Bhansali’s office. Says a source close to Bhansali’s team, “Jhanvi and Khushi didn’t visit Sanjay Bhansali. They visited Bhansali’s niece Sharmin Sehgal who is Jhanvi’s best friend. Sharmin lives with her sister Simran and parents Bela Sehgal (SLB’s sister) and Deepak Sehgal in the same building where Sanjay Bhansali has his office. The paps saw her emerge from that building and concluded the obvious.” Interestingly Jhanvi and Sharmin have been best friends since they both attended the same acting school in Los Angeles two years ago. The two of them used to hang out together in LA and they are now inseparable in Mumbai. They will make their screen debut at around the same time. While Jhanvi is being launched by Karan Johar in “Dhadak”, Sharmin is being launched by her uncle Sanjay Leela Bhansali in a film that will be directed by Mangesh Hadawale. 106 | May 18

Trip to the world of beautiful sunsets Acting is my first love and travelling comes a close second by a mere difference of an inch. The chance to see the unseen and delve into the unexplored makes both acting and travelling exciting. Thailand, to me, had previously meant shooting in Bangkok, but this visit further opened up and changed my opinion of the country as I explored it; As far as life defining experiences go - the mesmerising sunsets of Krabi makes the top of my list. How is one to resist the beautiful hues of blue, pink, purple, yellows and oranges that the sky makes possible each day? Being a spectator of dawn and dusk is truly magical; add to it, a dip in the blue waters just as clear and reflective of the sky above which only gets better with the silence and intermittent gushing of the wind. The experience of it all fused as one is incredible, such that it teleported me to a state of mind that could only be described as a vacation while at work, and the occurrence of that is truly rare. In Krabi, the day rushes past us really quick with a session at the most luxurious spas, leaving you boneless and relaxed akin to a jelly. This was followed by scrumptious food, every meal in Krabi was unique not only because of the way in which the cuisine was interpreted, but also because there were many to choose from - Apart from Thai - Indian and Italian cuisines, biased by my love for the same, seemed to be the next best cuisines I tried. I was also in love the sweet fresh coconut water, which became a staple while there, almost to a point of addiction. The cities come alive in an intriguing way once the orange hues of the sunsets give way to the darker blue of the night. The nightlife in the market of Ao Nang is a must, there is a variety of local goods, souvenirs, tattoo artists and massages. Restaurants and bars up their ante with some having live performers who give you an understanding of their culture, of their roots and also their being with the performances; and you can never go wrong roaming the relaxed yet busy streets which give you a true sense of what vibe Krabi stands for. Thankfully, due to a shoot we were able to explore the non-touristy yet beautiful parts of the island, those hideaways that are scenic but inaccessible unless looked for, there's almost a sense of achievement when you chance upon these untouched pieces of nature. The spooky caves are eerie but strangely beautiful with their natural formations and patterns, the waters far and wide aided my lookout for a rising or setting sun, my eyes trained on the horizon. The speedboat ride to the location was nothing less than thrilling, what defines a vacation more than salt in the breeze and tangled hair. We also shot in the forest trail of luscious green which was what one would think of when they think of a retreat away from civilization, and the high mountains were with the best views, undoubtedly. In the best sense, Krabi seemed like the perfect choice for a mini vacation in the middle of work, I was blown away by this new side that I got to see. It only goes to show that all we need to do is travel farther to unravel more. Thailand, more so Krabi, will now in my mind be recorded as stunning mixture of nature, peace, nightlife, culture and endless waters. #LoveKrabi -Yami Gupta 126 | May 18

Ileana D'Cruz expecting her first baby with Andrew Kneebone

It was just last December that Ileana D'Cruz hinted at being married to longtime boyfriend Andrew Kneebone as she took to Instagram on the occasion of Christmas and shared a picture featuring herself and a beautifully lit Christmas tree. Her caption read, "My favourite time of the year #christmastime #happyholidays #home #love #family Photo by hubby @andrewkneebonephotography". Well, the mention of "hubby" in her post sparked rumours of a possible wedding. If recent reports are anything to go by, the 'Baadshaho' actress is expecting her first baby with Andrew. However, there hasn't been any confirmation regarding the same from them. The duo has often indulged in a lot of PDA and professed love for each other openly on social media, despite guarding their private life. 129 | May 18

Alia Bhatt opens up about portraying the role of Sehmat

The much awaited trailer of Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions' “Raazi”, directed by Meghna Gulzar, is out. “Raazi” is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka's novel, “Calling Sehmat”, and stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal in pivotal roles. Alia Bhatt's character in “Raazi” is a young, naive girl who decides to risk her life for her country. When asked Alia about her preparation she says that it was the most beautiful aspect as she didn't have to enact anything. A lot of technical preparation went into playing Sehmat. Alia had to improve her Urdu and then unlearn what she had picked up, because she plays a Kashmiri and she wasn't required to speak chaste Urdu or Hindi. She also learnt how to drive a Jonga (a kind of jeep used by the armed forces). Emotionally, one would have never been able to prepare for the journey she set out on, because once they started shooting, it was relentless. They have shot nine scenes a day, and that's something Alia have never done. When asked Alia about which one is the most difficult role to portray, as the trailer shows Alia playing a daughter, a wife and a spy. Alia says that, "The guilt that Sehmat feels as a wife was the toughest to portray". What Alia has learnt from the character? She has learnt about the sheer selflessness of people and the willingness with which they would give up everything for their nation. Look at Sehmat in the trailer. Someone once said to her that there is no such thing as a selfless deed, but she doesn't think that is true, especially in this case. I don't think she could have played a more selfless character than Sehmat. A parent putting a child's interest before his or hers is a great deal, but to put your country's interest before everything else is even greater. “Raazi”, presented by Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions, and produced by Vineet Jain, Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta, releases on May 11, 2018. 132 | May 18

“High Jack”-stoner comedy answer to “Hangover”

Phantom film's “High Jack” is touted to be the first stoner comedy of Bollywood. The film revolves around a bunch of first-time hijackers, trying to hijack a plane. The first-timers along with the passengers accidentally get high, which results in a series of very funny, whacky series of events. Later the film showcases the aftermath of what happens when passengers get stoned on the flight which further leads into a series of madcap adventures. Interestingly even Hollywood film 'The Hangover' is based on the lines of similar genre and madness. We can also proclaim that 'High Jack' is Bollywood's ultimate answer to 'The Hangover'. The Hangover tells the story of Phil Wenneck, Stu Price, Alan Garner, and Doug Billings, who travel to Las Vegas for a bachelor party to celebrate their friends Doug's impending marriage. However, Phil, Stu, and Alan wake up with Doug missing and no memory of the previous night's events and they have to find Doug before the wedding can take place. If we take the plots of both films into consideration, we can surely deduce that both the film's plot is based on madcap adventure and its fresh take on comedy. The recently released trailer which showcases some madcap scenes and a unique concept, all happening in the sky has garnered love and appreciation from across the quarters. High Jack marks the entry of Viu, the leading international OTT Video Service, into films. The film stars an ensemble cast featuring Sumeet Vyas, Sonnalli Sehgal, Mantra, Sarthak Kakar, Kumud Mishra, Radhika Bangia, Priyanshu Painyuli and Adhaar Khurana. Produced by Phantom films in association with Viu,High Jack directed by Akarsh Khurana is slated to release in 2018. 135 | May 18

Varun Dhawan: "People Make Stars, I Always Try and be an Actor"

He walks into the room like a ray of sunshine, spreading cheer and warmth. It’s hard not to be taken in by Varun Dhawan’s charm and easy manners. He is your boy-next-door. He is your sexy superstar. He is also the serious actor with the rare combination of critical and mass appeal. And he is your fun buddy you would enjoy partying with. Varun’s biggest asset is his affability and his fantastic connect with whoever he meets – journalists, fans or society hotshots. Unlike other super diplomatic (read, boring) PR-driven and image conscious actors, his sincerity shines through in his conversations. Just as it does in his rock-solid performances. Indeed, in all these years we have known and interacted with him, we haven’t met a single soul who doesn’t love him. Mr Congeniality? Yes, that’s him! The two words of advice one would like to give the actor? ‘Never change!’ At the spacious ICONIC office in Dubai where team Masala! meets him, the atmosphere is relaxed and fun. Varun has had a busy day that hasn’t dented his energy levels. He talks about the brand he endorses (ICONIC) sincerely, he expounds on his cinematic choices passionately and he tackles the tricky questions intelligently. An interviewer’s dream? You can say that again! Excerpts from a wonderful star interaction… You are the ambassador of a fashion brand. How much of your personality is reflected in the choices you make off screen? A lot! My personality is masaledar and there is a lot of masala in ICONIC as well. The clothes are quite out there, they are super commercial and they are something that people will buy. I 136 | May 18

am myself a consumer of these things. I believe that if you are doing something, it should reach out to maximum people. It’s like the movies. There is no point in doing a fab film that people say is very good but don’t want to watch, right? If you are creating something and putting it out there, you should want people to see it. You can’t be selfish about art. Recently, we came across an article that featured you in a Pink T-shirt which said you were challenging ideas of masculinity and shattering stereotypes. Do such thoughts cross your mind when you wear an outfit? No, not at all (laughs!). Pink is one of my favourite colours. I have always loved wearing pink! I don’t understand the association of colours with gender in the first place! Everyone knows I always wear colourful stuff. Sometimes I might dress a little dark and edgy but that’s just because of my mood. Sometimes when I am not in the right mood or feeling low, I might wear a pink Tee as it lifts my spirits. I do feel colours lift you up, they reflect what you feel. Coming to your movies, congratulations on a fantastic 2017. Your films were among the few ‘commercial mainstream’ ones that succeeded. It is said to be the year of the Indies… (Smiles). That’s what they said about 2016 too. But is it unsettling that you can’t predict audience tastes these days? The movies you did were the only ones that fit the bracket of masala films (Judwaa 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya). Well, I am a cinema lover. I love good films, whether indie, commercial, regional or whatever. And I believe if a film is good and connects with the audience, it will do well. Movies like Lipstick Under my Burkha and Hindi Medium did immensely well. But at the same time, a G olmaal 4, Judwaa 2 and Tiger Zinda Hai did outstanding business too. Obviously, the ‘event film’ is going to be the biggest grosser as you get to see things that you don’t in real life. Post Bahubali, big, commercial masala films now have to be event films with a huge canvas. Today, with Netflix and Amazon, you get your regular, casual films easily, you don’t need to go to a theatre to watch it. The need of the hour is to merge technology into story-telling and make good films. Bahubali is a fine example, it has set the benchmark. Do you see yourself doing a Netflix series? I do! Hopefully I will be able to produce one someday, push the boundaries or do something I can’t on the big screen. Though right now my focus is entirely on movies, the way things are going and the audience base is growing, there is massive potential. I am a user (of Netflix and Amazon) myself. But in most of your movies, you have appealed to… how do I put it… the Hindi heartland? How do you see yourself as this ‘mass hero’? It is difficult, having been born and brought up in Mumbai! But I do feel organically attracted to these characters as I feel those are the stories that need to be told. Right from my childhood, while watching Amitabh Bachchan or Govinda or Salman Khan films, I would get attracted to them. One of my favourite films of my dad is Swarg where Govinda played a servant and goes on to become an actor. Who doesn’t love the hero-underdog story? I am glad to tell the common man stories because that is strength of India or any other country. 137 | May 18

Aren’t you limiting yourself that way? As it is, the ‘universal hit’ of yore, or a pan Indian hero who appeals to one and all, doesn’t seem to exist. I don’t think that’s true. The Khans have been there… But they have been there for 30 years! Then let me complete 30 years and see (laughs). See, things are evolving in a big way. You are not just watching a film on the big screen today. Judwaa 2 released in theatres and went on to make a huge amount of money. Then it released on satellite TV and got 1.5 million viewership in its first run and an equally high number in its second run. Overall, the film has been consumed at a huge level and we are not even talking of those who watched it pirated. It’s incredible. We are still reaching out to new audiences. Let’s talk about the characters you play. From now on, will you also consider how your role is going to be interpreted by people? (Reference point: both in Judwaa 2 and Badrinath… his character was accused of being patriarchal and ill-treating women). I totally will. But let’s admit that people have become way more touchy than before! If you are getting into how critics reacted to Judwaa 2 that was the Judwaa 1 they reacted to, as this was a remake. I understand what they say… being considered a youth icon, what you do, say or propagate does have an influence, I get it. But there was a big audience that was laughing at Will Ferrell’s comedy or Jack Black’s physical humour. Did they watch and laugh at it and find it cool because the West was making it in English? The West also reacts differently these days to women’s concerns… Maybe they do! But you still have a show like Family Guy which is running for so many years and has all different type of jokes. I am not saying that this is the way to be. But ultimately it’s a joke. Secondly, it’s a character that I am playing. If I play a tapori, I have to do an honest representation of a tapori! If I do a fake representation of a tapori, they will object to that too… People in real life are bad. If I play a villain, I have to do wrong things to make you believe I am bad. I can’t just keep on setting a (good) standard. If I do, I will become a very diplomatic actor. Or a politician! As an actor, I have to show all sides. Of course, what I say in my personal life as Varun Dhawan, is what really matters. I don’t propagate any of those ideas personally. I will condemn them, I may get trolled and get a backlash but I will condemn it till my last breath. Do you think being a popular actor, the responsibility is more on you to project the right message? Let me put it this way. I have a film October coming up. I was doing super commercial films and people asked why was I signing these serious films? When I do something else, they will question again. Bottomline: You are going to be judged whatever you do, you can’t please everyone all the time. Actors are always judged. You are judged for your words, you are judged for your silence. Agree? Yes, we are always judged. That’s fine, after all you have made the decision to be a public 138 | May 18

figure! But yes, at times it’s tough for me too, honestly. I go through really low days sometimes dealing with the negativity because my intention is never to hurt anyone. But you overcome it. Varun, you are one of the few actors who is loved by women, men and kids. Ever thought of getting a bad boy image for a change? (Laughs) I don’t know! There are people who really look out for me, my manager and my best friend. My conscience is always there with me. As you grow in life, your conscience pulls you back from doing the wrong things but that doesn’t mean I haven’t done anything wrong! I have hurt people, I have been hurt as well. And I am accountable for those actions but I am a human being too. I never meant it to be like that but things happen… I guess you should give yourself a break at times. Student of the Year 2… is ready for release. Do you feel like revisiting the sets? Ah, that film (Student of the Year, his debut movie) was made by Karan Johar and now Punit Malhotra is taking it forward. It is definitely very nostalgic but I think it’s great that the film is moving on. I did Judwaa 2 so I know what the pressure is all about. What words of advice do you have for Tiger Shroff who is playing the lead? I think he is a supremely talented boy, he doesn’t need any of my advice. I get inspired watching him do his stuff! I need not tell him anything. After six years in the industry, how will you explain the difference between a celebrity, a star and an actor? Today, a celebrity is of different kinds. There are social media celebrities, celebs who get famous doing good things and others who are famous for notoriety. A star is someone who is obviously very celebrated and loved. He must be loved by people if he is a star though that comes with its own riders. But – and I strongly believe this - if you want to be star, you have to be an actor. Any guy who is a superstar today is also a very good actor. Because acting is also the ability to connect with people. If you are not charismatic, if your eyes are not saying a story when you are mouthing your lines, if that honesty is not there, you won’t connect through a screen to the millions watching you. And I believe you would want to be known as the actor? Yes. I always try and be an actor first. Star is something that people make you, you can’t make yourself a star, right? 139 | May 18

Guess How Much Pocket Money Ranbir Kapoor Gets From His Mom Neetu

Did you know Ranbir Kapoor still takes pocket money from mom Neetu Singh, just like he did in college? This is one habit Ranbir Kapoor hasn't been able to let go off. How much is the money he takes every month from mom? Well, it's a paltry Rs 1500! "In his growing years, Ranbir reportedly used to get an amount of Rs 1,500 every month from his mother Neetu Kapoor as pocket money. Years later, the Kapoor lad turned things around for himself – from owning a swanky bachelor pad, several mean machines and of course, a hefty pay cheque with every film he signs – Ranbir has accomplished it all. But of all the things that remain unchanged, he still continues to take pocket money from his dearest mom."
