Star Watch..... Arjun Kapoor Arjun Kapoor, who made his debut in Parineeti Chopra starrer Ishqzaade in 2012 wants to do more intense films and says he would love to portray myriad characters like a father, a con and a gangster on screen. When asked what he aspires to do next, Arjun told, “It is very difficult to say I want to do this or that because I want to do so much. So, for me it is still the tip of the iceberg. I know it’s been a few years that I have been around. I haven’t gotten a chance to do a nice con, heist film.’’ ‘’I want to do a good gangster film. I would love to play a father, also an intense love story at my age. I am 33 plus now...slightly more intense.” Ki & Ka actor says it is exciting to see the kind of content coming up in Hindi filmdom. “It is limitless at the end of the day, the possibilities the actors today have with content really being transformed on paper already. Ranveer Singh
Varun Dhawan Varun Dhawan had to go through rigorous training to play the character of Zafar in Karan Johar’s Kalank. In an interview with a daily, the actor revealed details of how he prepared for the role. He said, “I moved to a hotel in Goregaon to save time and since I had suffered a knee injury and hamstring tear at the time, I had physios visiting me daily. But I still managed to continue with my twice-a-day training session at the hotel and in the make-shift gym on the set with my trainer Prashant Sawant.” Varun also recalled the time he felt the need for body double. He even asked Abhishek Verman, director of the film, for a body double as he didn’t want to get hurt but the actor got no response. The bull fight sequence was shot in Kargil and though the temperature was very low in the region, Varun had to shoot the scenes bare-bodied. “The blood you see is my own because Zafar is the kind of guy who will come out of a crisis with a smirk,” Varun said.
Ranveer, who is always in high spirits with a never-die enthusiasm recently revealed how he manages to stay high on energy all the time. “I really don’t know, but I do think about it a lot as I get asked this a lot. The only thing that I can come up with, after internalizing and analyzing myself, is that I have a lust for life. I have a great zeal for life and to all the things that are there to experience along the way in this journey. And, I like to do everything to the fullest as I don’t believe in the past or the future, I just try and live in the ‘now’. So, whatever it is that I am doing in a moment, I just try and do it with everything I have got. And that, I guess, translates into what is perceived as ‘high energy’, but it is just enthusiasm for everything that I am doing,” he said at an event.

here is no country in the world quite like India. That realization is stronger when we live abroad and visit countries around the world. An enchanting land that embodies diversity, divinity, depth and drama. Chaotic yet charming, incredible in every sense! Each of my prior trips including my most recent visit for a family wedding, reinforced these feelings. As immigrant Indians, we are poised on a bridge between two worlds- Janma Bhoomi (the land of our birth) and Karma Bhoomi (the land where we work and reside). Undoubtedly there is a strong bond of love that connects us to both countries. India from where we derive our roots and heritage and the US which represents our dreams and our future. Every once in a while, when we leave American shores and embark on a long journey to the other side of the world, it’s also an odyssey into our past. From a tranquil suburbia in the US, to a bustling, lively metro city in India is a sea change. The pollution is forgotten; just breathing the air of our childhood makes it soulful and serene. Whispers from the past breeze into our present, uplifting our soul and sentiments. The moment you touch Indian soils, you can feel the vibrant energy of everyone around, right DesiPages
from porters in airports ready to assist you enthusiastically, to the warm and welcoming Namastes. The fatigue of a long flight coupled with arriving without luggage (thanks to missing connecting flights) is all forgotten with the loving embraces of our near and dear. Residing in your home town as a visitor, is joyful and rejuvenating. Most metro cities in India have embraced modernity but also continue to remain rooted in tradition. With every day that unfolds, there is a magic to revisiting old favorite haunts, the delicious serendipitous encounters with familiar faces and the delights of discovering the new hotspots in town. Every meal whether at home or in a restaurant is an aromatic multi-sensory experience, a gastronomical adventure that will begin or end with the best filter kaapi or masala garam chai! The street side food is forever tempting with the tangy chatpata chaat being simply irresistible. Every taste and palette feels satiated whether you eat a sumptuous homecooked meal garnished with love, gorge on rustic recipes from a roadside dhaba or feast on the extravagant multi-cuisine buffets in 7 star hotels. Food feeds the soul being the foodies we are! India is shopper’s heaven on earth. The simple pleasures of haggling with street side vendors; the ocean of exotic handicrafts, antiques and shawls that engulfs us, making choosing such a difficult endeavor; the mega malls that have mushroomed in many metros which give a taste of the America we live in but pale in comparison to the allure of local brands and shops; the exhilaration of unearthing hidden gems and new boutiques that carry distinctive and unique treasures! No shopping is complete without visiting India’s saree shops; to me that is the true paradise! Despite having trunk shows and designers who travel to the US to showcase sarees, there is no feeling in the world that DFW |May

comes close to shopping in India’s saree palaces. Witnessing the array of colors, feeling the fabulous flowing fabrics, admiring the yards of woven splendor and the joy of draping a zillion sarees before making your final choices, is an experience like no other. Then there is the joyous happiness of meeting old friends, bridging the gaps in time and knowing that no matter how far we wander, our friendship will always be the same! The sights, sounds and flavors of India are like no other. A journey into our senses, a surreal experience that makes us crave for more. A paradox of extremes where you can witness poverty and prosperity on the same street; coffee houses and swanky pubs in the vicinity of ancient temples and

places of worship; the blend of spirituality with mysticism; the medley of timeless tradition with cross-cultural modernism; the mundane and the magnificent beautifully interwoven, leaving us spellbound. Most of all, it’s the awakening of the soul to our roots and the joy of reconnecting with loved ones. We ultimately return to our home in the US with not just suitcases full of goodies and gifts but a heart full of loving moments and a treasure-box full of memories. Happiness is opening that treasure-box of India memoirs, reliving special moments and rejoicing in that experience yet again. After all, memories never fade, but linger on in silent splendor making them richer and more precious with every passing year!
