MAHESH THAKKAR Group Chairman

IINNOVATING FOR A BETTER FUTURE b is critical to innovation and Learning to think outside of the box creating competitive advantage. Creative thinking requires learning how to get beyond the real and perceived limiting barriers. My Favorite phase for that matter is “The only thing that is constant is Change’ and for new and interesting innovations one’s mind should be in a constant scuffle for change. The expression “thinking out of the box” came from the nine dots puzzle by Henry Dudeney, where people were asked to connect three rows of three dots, with four straight lines, while never taking their pencil off of the paper. It could only be solved by extending the lines outside of the dot box. But only a few people could think beyond the given puzzle and solve it. From the very beginning, I knew my mind worked very differently and if a problem was posed to me, I would start thinking eight steps ahead of how that solution could be a solution for many other problems. For example, let me try explaining that phenomenon through the music world, since we are FunAsia. If people were making audio cassettes, I would be thinking of CD’s and high definition digital music available at a click. Now, very few big music companies who had the resources changed their technology to move ahead, as they were very comfortable for years in what they offered. They never thought of innovation. Giant companies closed.A dif recent different example is Sears which filed bankruptcy. Innovators on the other hand constantly kept changing their technology and kept going and progressing. My desire to acquire a media company is solely built on the phenomenon of change. Media is the face of all the changes happening around us. Media needs to be innovative and be at par if not head of how the society operates. But if you ask me, media moves a step ahead. And that is my vison for Funasia. We have a brilliant pool of innovations that will trigger and satisfy your experiences.Whether you are listening to music or watching high quality digital stereophonic movies comfortably on recliners.Whether you pick up a great read article in leisure in our magazine, or sit and relax in front of our TV. Each experience will stimulate and delight you. NNOVATING FOR A BETTER FUTURE

The Nepotism Debate Here’s what Anushka Sharma and Shahid Kapoor have to say about it

E

ver since Karan Johar was called the flagbearer of nepotism on his famous talk show by actress Kangana Ranaut, nepotism has become the talking point in the country. The latest actress to come out in open and talk about it is none other than Anushka Sharma, who has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood. She was quoted saying that everyone’s talking about nepotism but she has nothing to do with it. She further added that the actors should be blamed for nepotism but the people who are responsible for it should and people think that nepotism exists but it’s just a useless topic to talk about.

front, Anushka will be seen in the role of a scientist in Aanand L Rai’s ‘Zero’ which also stars Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. The film is scheduled to release on December 21, 2018.

The debate of nepotism never really died and it never will. While Kangana Ranaut is touted to be the one who raised this storm, there has been barely anybody in B-town who has come out in support of the actress. However, Shahid Kapoor’s recent Meanwhile, on the professional statements on the 10 | DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

same might make the actress happy. Shahid opened up about the subject of nepotism in an interview recently. Agreeing to the fact that we live in one of the most nepotistic times we’ve ever been in, the actor reportedly stated that everybody who has anything to do with an actor or a producer or a director kinda tries to become an actor. And there is a lot less access to people who are not within the fraternity. He also added that social media hasn’t really helped that because the people who tend to get noticed are the people who happen to be somebody of a celebrity. Therefore, you are in the limelight. So, it’s a big contradiction. On the work front, the actor is awaiting the release of his upcoming film ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’ that is slated to release on September 21.

Regarding his role, the actor said: “When you play the role of a commando onscreen, you feel that they are the real heroes. Reacting on the Tanushree Dutta and Nana Patekar controversy, Vicky said: “I think any kind of disrespect or harassment at workplace or anywhere is not a correct thing to do. If someone comes out in the open to share his or her ordeal then the least we can do is to listen to what they are saying and to respect them because it is not easy to express such kind of issue in front of the world. “It is also important to listen to both the accuser and the accused. When such kind of serious cases occur, then it has to be investigated in proper manner.” Based on the surgical strikes of 2016 carried by the Indian Armed Forces, “Uri” traces the significant event. It stars Vicky Kaushal, Yami Gautam, Kirti Kulhari and Paresh Rawal in lead roles. Produced by RSVP movies and directed by Aditya Dhar, “Uri” will hit the theatres on January 11, 2019.

Farhan Akhtar makes his relationship with Shibani Dandekar

F

arhan Akhtar is usually not the type to wear his heart on sleeve but well that has changed now. After all, who can hide true love right? Farhan took to Instagram just as we speak to share a picture of his lady on his arm. And well, they do look pretty handsome together. It is a candid pic with Farhan walking the streets of London with Shibani holding his hand and casually looking at the camera. They look made for each in this picture and we are so glad that the two have made it official on social media. Their relationship was like an open secret in the industry but this picture just confirms this contention. Shibani was in the news since last two days after she spoke about the Me Too movement and supporter her beau. With Farhan’s cousin, director Sajid Khan’s coming up in the list of sex offenders, Farhan condemned him. Shibani reacted on this unfortunate turn of events and said that Farhan was unaware of Sajid’s behaviour and hence should be excused. Many people got infuriated including actress Amrita Puri and blamed Farhan for not taking cognizance of Sajid’s offence since so many years, despite being the same family. Farhan denied knowing anything about this and so did Shibani. She wrote, “He can’t be held accountable for something he didn’t do or know of .. we need to focus on the girls and stop with the blame.” It is now clear that Sajid will not be excused from this offence and he has been asked to step down from directing Housefull 4 by Akshay Kumar and the producers of the film until he is proven innocent. Farhan is currently in London where is shooting for The Sky Is Pink with Priyanka Chopraand Zaira Wasim.

Sanya Malhotra opens up

L

ike every newcomer, Sanya Malhotra’s hopes were also pinned to her debut “Dangal” but the actor says she did not expect the 2016 sports drama to be a career-changing experience. Since the Nitesh Tiwari-directed film, the 26-year-old actor starred in the rustic comedy Pataakha this year. She will follow it up with Badhaai Ho opposite Ayushmann Khurrana and Sanya says she is lucky to have been offered a wide range of roles early in her career. “The kind of response I got after ‘Dangal’ was amazing. I did not expect that. I thought I will have to go through several rounds of auditions even now. I had not thought that one film will make this much difference to my career. “Three days after ‘Dangal’ released, I got a call from Ritesh Batra for ‘Photograph’. It was going to be my second film but Pataaka released

first,” Sanya told PTI. Being an actor was always her dream and Sanya says she understands she needs to make the most of every opportunity that comes her way. “Acting is important to me. My work and craft is more important. My desire is to be known as a very good actor,” she adds. Before her forthcoming film, Badhaai Ho happened, the actor said she had completed work on Ritesh Batra’s “Photograph”. She says taking up a dramedy after Batra’s intense film was a challenge. “There was a huge difference. Ritesh Batra’s set was like a monastery, while Amit Sharma’s set had a par-

ty atmosphere. I was disoriented for about two-three days on the sets of ‘Badhaai Ho’,” she says. The story of Badhaai Ho revolves around an elderly couple, played by Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao, who find out they would be turning parents for the third time, much to the discomfort of their children and society. Sanya says there should be no judgments about someone’s personal decision. “The film talks about romance and it has no age. Why can’t older couples have sex? This is normal and it is high time people stopped judging others and their personal decisions. They are married and they can have babies at whatever age they want,” she says.

Impact of Foreign Tax Fraud could be Serious

VAISHALI THAKKAR CEO PERFECT TAX & FINANCE

Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR), has been existing since 1990s. The initiative of this law was done by US treasury to monitor money laundering. In recent years, IRS has aggressively pursued taxpayers involved in abusive offshore transactions

If

you are holding foreign accounts outside United States, you should check with your tax consultant how to report these accounts to authorities in accordance to IRS guidelines. Foreign tax reporting could be cumbersome as there are many forms to fill out and not filing them, not only is subject to fines, but also serious civil and criminal penalty or both. Longer you wait penalty piles up. In this article, I will talk about two major reporting forms FBAR and FATCA. However, there are more than 10 other forms to fill out if you have foreign trust, mutual fund, partnership in foreign business or if you own foreign disregarded entities. While FATCA is critical for individual with high balance, Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR), also called FinCEN Form 114, is reporting combined value over $10,000 you own, control, or have signature authority over foreign bank and

30

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

financial accounts. Failure to file both FATCA and FBAR could be taken as a serious attempt to circumvent U.S. tax law. Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR), has been existing since 1990s. The initiative of this law was done by US treasury to monitor money laundering. In recent years, IRS has aggressively pursued taxpayers involved in abusive offshore transactions. Taxpayers have tried to avoid or evade U.S. income tax by hiding income in offshore banks, brokerage accounts or through foreign partnership entities. Taxpayers also evade taxes by using offshore debit cards, credit cards, wire transfers, foreign trusts, employee-leasing schemes, private annuities, or insurance plans. To help control such abuses, the FBAR law was created. FBAR must be filed if the taxpayer has an interest in, or signature authority over, a foreign financial account with the aggregate balance over $10,000 any single day during the calendar year. FBAR filing is not limited to foreign accounts containing cash but DesiPages

t

t

t

also non-monetary assets of more than $10,000. The cash surrender value of a life insurance policy is such example. Most of the time tax payer do not get proper guidance to do accurate filing so it is very important to seek advice from experienced professional. FBAR is not filed with your tax return but filed separately with the Department of the Treasury. From this year FBAR extension is also available. Not filing FBAR leads to serious consequences. Indian-American man, Vaibhav Dahake, pleaded guilty to Offshore tax evasion and tax fraud by US tax authorities. Dahake was helped by five HSBC employees in concealing his accounts in India so that he could avoid paying taxes in the U.S. He maintained accounts at large international banks including England, India, Singapore, Hong Kong. Mr Dahake was accused of hiding his foreign bank accounts in HSBC India, a case which has led US Internal Revenue Service to probe NRIs holding accounts in the bank. Vaibhav Dahake, from Somerset, New Jersey, pleaded guilty before US District Judge Freda Wolfson to an indictment charging him with the count of conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Dahake was sentenced five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or twice the amount of financial gain accrued to him or loss to the IRS. Dahake also paid 50% civil penalty for failing to file reports of foreign bank or financial account relating to his undeclared bank accounts for all the years involved. As all taxpayers prepare to file their annual returns, reminders are sent to financial institutions to comply with IRS guideline and not use foreign accounts to evade U.S. income taxes. The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) law passed in 2010, generally requires that foreign financial institutions identify their U.S. customers and report information on the foreign assets held by their U.S. account holders, either directly or through a foreign entity, or be subject to withholding payments. FATCA has become an important tool in the government’s ability to collect information and pursue its enforcement campaign against U.S. taxpayers with undeclared offshore assets. Now, FATCA has demonstrated its utility in enforcing U.S. law against foreign bankers who allegedly may be complicit in attempting to assist U.S. taxpayers hide their assets. FATCA is a part of the government’s efforts to combat offshore tax evasion by U.S. persons holding accounts and other financial assets offshore. FATCA requires certain foreign financial institutions DesiPages

to report directly to the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) information about financial accounts held by U.S. taxpayers or by foreign entities in which U.S. taxpayers hold a substantial ownership interest. The reporting institutions include not only banks, but also other financial institutions, such as investment entities (e.g., hedge funds or private equity funds), custodial institutions (e.g. mutual funds), and certain insurance companies. FATCA also requires certain U.S. taxpayers who hold specified foreign financial assets with an aggregate value of more than the reporting threshold to report information about those assets on Form 8938, which must be attached to the taxpayer’s annual income tax return. Specified foreign financial assets include foreign financial accounts and foreign non-account assets held for investment (as opposed to held for use in a trade or business), such as foreign stock and securities, foreign financial instruments, contracts with non-U.S. persons, and interests in foreign entities. The reporting threshold for a single individual living in the U.S. is $50,000 but increases to $200,000 for a single individual living outside of the U.S. The reporting thresholds increase to $100,000 and $400,000, respectively, for married couples filing jointly. Recently, a former executive of Loyal Bank Ltd., Adrian Baron, 63-year-old, pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud U.S. by failing to comply to FATCA. Baron was transferred to the United States from Hungary in July 2018. The guilty plea was entered before United States District Judge in June 2017, an undercover agent met with Baron and explained that he was a U.S. citizen involved in stock manipulation schemes and was interested in opening multiple corporate bank accounts at Loyal Bank. The undercover agent informed Baron that he did not want to appear on any of the account opening documents for his bank accounts at Loyal Bank, even though he would be the true owner of the accounts. Baron responded that Loyal Bank could open such accounts and provide debit cards linked to them. In July 2017, the undercover agent again met with Baron and described how his stock manipulation scheme operated, including the need to circumvent the IRS’s reporting requirements under FATCA. During the meeting, Baron stated that Loyal Bank would not submit a FATCA declaration to regulators unless the paperwork indicated “obvious” U.S. involvement. Subsequently, in July and August 2017, Loyal Bank opened multiple bank accounts for the undercover agent. At no time did Baron or Loyal Bank request or collect FATCA Information from the undercover agent. If Baron is guilty, he will be sentenced five years in prison. | DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

4 timeless Bollywood actresses

who are aging like fine wine

India’s original dhak dhak girl turned 50 last year, but can you tell that at all? When she took a break from movies, still at the peak of her career, to have a family of her own, she left many heartbroken fans. When, after almost a decade she returned to Mumbai with her husband and kids, what we found is her was an absolute zero for change in her charm.

This is a mother of two children, one almost a teen – would you believe? She has not gained an ounce of weight even after two deliveries. Her face is as fresh as it was way back in the days of Raja Hindustani. The Kapoors are known to gain weight with age, Karisma seems to be the only exception.

She is in her mid-forties, but the Rangeela girl continues to beam like a blooming sunflower. The camera seems to have captured her in her best, but even if we put all our efforts in finding the worst, we would fail in locating one odd picture that shows the actress as anything less of a bewitching siren.

Much like her Baazigar co-actor, Kajol’s looks have gotten more elegant with time. I was always a fan of her acting; her make-up and styling – not so much. But she has taken her entire style game several notches up in the recent years and is making up for all the years lost in shabby outfits.

Preity G Zinta was asked what she wants to change in Bollywood. Her reply is heartwarming

P

reity G Zinta has been working in Bollywood for two decades now. At the India Today Conclave East 2018, she was asked what she wanted to change about the industry, and her response was heartwarming. “Better insurance policies for light guys and crew and equipment,” the actress said. She went on to elaborate, “Now I’m also working in the West and I have seen the way they work. We have no value for life! And the value for life doesn’t come from the producer. It’s the light guy. If you give him those socks and say, ‘Bhaiyya, yeh pehno aur upar jao’, he’ll say, ‘Mere ko aadat nahi hai.’” “It’s okay if the star gets hurt,” Preity said, adding that they have the financial capability to get treatment. “Luckily, we have some really good actors. If someone gets injured on Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan’s set, they actually make sure that the guy is paid for,” she said. However, she believes that there needs to be some kind of group insurance policy for the crew. “In some ways, it should get evened out by the industry. Because they make very little money and are the sole breadwinners. They are hanging upside down from the lights and when it’s raining, it leaks and stuff like that. Insurance policies are definitely needed,” Preity said.

It took a year

T

but #MeToo is finally roiling Bollywood and Indian media he #MeToo movement has arrived in India, and it is the media and entertainment industry that’s getting a massive shake-up.

While several women are coming out with their stories on social media, a leading Bollywood production house has been dissolved following allegations of sexual assault made against one of its four partners. On Oct. 06, a former crew member of Phantom Films, founded by filmmakers Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl, and Madhu Mantena, accused Bahl of molesting her in May 2015. Bahl is best known for his 2014 blockbuster film Queen, widely praised for its feminist theme. A day before the interview was published, and three days after Huffington Post sent out a questionnaire on the issue to Phantom Films, the partners announced they had dissolved the firm. Bahl’s, however, is only the latest in a string of relatively high profile names to be outed over the past few days by women in India who have allegedly been subjected to sexual misconduct in the course of their professional duties over the years.

However, it was stupid of me, to feel that way and to even share that with her.” The wave of allegations has spurred questions over due process and the effectiveness of social media in India. “On social media, there can only be accusations and calling out. There’s a certain value to that, but there has to be something more,” Joseph said. “There are grey areas in anything to do with gender relations. Some of this does need to be discussed with a little more nuance.” “We need to make our institutions more accountable,” said Minu Jain, an editor at the news agency Press Trust of India. “Each organisation needs to look within itself to see how they’ve dealt with complaints like this and how they plan to deal with them in the future.”

The fully financed media company will focus on the acquisition, development and production of feature films aimed for a worldwide audience, according to a Deadline report. Shah was previously an executive at Benaroya Pictures, which made films like “Lawless” starring Jessica Chastain and “Queen of the Desert” starring Nicole Kidman. “I have worked on every genre of movie, romantic comedies, futuristic, large action adventures and thrillers for several production houses in India and Hollywood,” Shah said in a statement. “When the time came for me to launch my own content company, producing movies on my own, that connect to my company name — Bollywood and Hollywood — I always wanted to make that debut an inspiring story for the whole family.” With his new production house, Shah aims to create 46

4 Best Films Since the Revival of Pakistani Cinema 1. ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi’ (2017) A successful box office performance isn’t always reflective of how good a film is. However, in this case, Punjab Nahi Jaungi deserved every bit of the recognition it received. The Humayun Saeed and Mehwish Hayat-starrer broke records to eventually become the highest grossing Pakistani film to date. When we think of why it resonated with the audience, there is a legitimate argument in favour of star power, music, production values or the release date (Eid season is always a safe bet for film-makers). But all of it boils down to one thing: The film had strong storytelling and it packed a powerful message. Director Nadeem Baig should be credited for not compromising his storytelling in favour of the message as some local film-makers often do. Coupled with nuanced performances by the cast, it etched a lasting impression and almost everyone including the people, critics and stakeholders went home happy.

48

2. ‘Cake’ (2018) Asim Abbasi’s directorial debut received rave reviews from local and international media. The Sanam Saeed, Aamina Sheikh and Adnan Malik-starrer is a very important film at this stage of Pakistani cinema for multiple reasons. Firstly, it did away with item numbers, which have lately become a trend to sell a movie. Plain and simple, it focused on a story and told it beautifully without relying on any gimmicks. It may very well be one of the best written films we have produced so far. Another reason is that it served as a reminder for young and emerging film-makers that they can have a unique voice and a vision, and still be able to make a film in the country. With Cake, Abbasi brought something new to the table and variety is exactly what we need for the growth of Pakistani cinema. 3. ‘Moor’ (2015) While the local audience didn’t accept the film, Jami Mahmood’s Moorreleased in

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

2015 to critical acclaim. The director tackled the issue of stolen railway tracks in an intriguing manner – keeping the essence of the story as well as adding some commercial value to it. While some may argue against the hotchpotch screenplay, it was a beautifully shot film and had strong performances to carry it. 4. ‘Dobara Phir Se’ (2016) I consider Mehreen Jabbar’s 2016 romantic film Dobara Phir Se a massively underrated film. It boasted of memorable performances by the ensemble cast of Hareem Farooq, Ali Kazmi, Adeel Hussain, Tooba Siddiqui, and Sanam Saeed. Not only that, the slow pace of the story may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it fit the narrative well. The film dealt with family and relationships in its own unique way. And Jabbar’s take on modern relationship and struggles that come with it, especially through the portrayal of a divorced Pakistani woman make it a strong addition to the list. DesiPages

ANNOYING HABITS OF SHAH RUKH KHAN? THERE IS NO DOUBT SHAH RUKH KHAN AND GAURI KHAN IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL COUPLES IN TINSEL TOWN. THEY HAVE BEEN HAPPILY MARRIED FOR ALMOST THREE DECADES, DESPITE THEY DON’T HAVE A NICKNAME LIKE TODAY’S GENERATION.

GAURI KHAN TELLS ANNOYING

HABITS OF SHAH RUKH KHAN? HERE’S WHAT SHE SAID There is no doubt Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan is one of the most powerful couples in tinsel town. They have been happily married for almost three decades, despite they don’t have a nickname like today’s generation. When Gauri Khan was asked about the annoying habits of Shah Rukh Khan, she told, “He really spoils the kids by pampering them way too much. The fact that SRK lost his parents quite early and couldn’t enjoy a childhood that he wanted, he makes sure that his kids don’t lack anything.” Gauri further said that, “While trying to make the kids happy, sometimes he goes overboard which becomes a headache for her. Well, that’s the cutest part of a relationship. The little annoying things give the biggest pleasures and we are happy to see them happy.” Gauri Khan — the wife of Shah Rukh Khan recently celebrated her birthday and shared a bunch of photos with husband and son Abram. While posting pictures on social media, Gauri Khan wrote a caption: “With half of my better halves on my birthday…the other halves in school!”

54

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

Having millions of fans around the world does not seem to affect their relationship. However, SRK’s success has never been a roadblock in the journey they shared together as a couple. Both SRK and Gauri love each other by heart despite imperfections and continued to be the King and Queen of Bollywood. Days before in an interview, Shah Rukh Khan reminded his struggling days when he had come to Mumbai after getting married to Gauri Khan. They had arrived in the city of dream merely few days after their marriage and had to shoot in Filmcity and Hema Malini was the director but somehow shot got delayed. At that time, SRK did not have a phone to call her ladylove, Gauri Khan, then he sent a cab to pick her up and both spent the night in Filmcity. Gauri Khan had dressed in Choorha and Indian dress that night, that’s the reason she deserves to be with SRK in his success. DesiPages

RADHIKA MADAN

Radhika Madan, whose debut film Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, won a top award at the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) that concluded here on Sunday, said it was a surreal moment and couldn’t have asked for more. The film, which was India’s first-ever entry into the festival’s “Midnight Madness” segment, won the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award. “I don’t know what to say. It is so surreal… First to get selected for the festival and then to win the award for the best film… I just couldn’t think, to be honest,” the 23-year-old actress told IANS at the festival’s after party. “I am going to celebrate the award with some wine and cheese and heading back to India to celebrate it,” said the Delhi-born actress whose another film Pataakha is set to release later this month. Radhika said her family and friends in India have already begun celebrating her success. “I just got the opportunity to call two or three people and they are danc-

ing over there. They are saying, ‘wow! How it happened?’ It has not yet sunk in because we were always the underdog.” She said the top award at the world’s premiere film festival will inspire her to work even harder. “To win this award really inspires us to do stuff like this even more.” Acting in this film, taught her “discipline of life and discipline in martial arts”. She said working with director Vasan Bala was an amazing experience for her. “He is a genius. He is too good… He is so calm. I think he is a very easy director to work with.” Radhika also praised her co-star Abhimanyu Dassani who too made his debut in this film. “Abhimanyu is so down-to-earth. Though he is a star kid, he doesn’t feel that he is a star kid. He is just like any other boy… So down-toearth… So sweet. He is a lovely co-actor to work with and one couldn’t have asked for more,” said the actress. After her first two films – Pataakha and Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, Radhika said she is now concentrating on her next projects. “I am reading scripts and finding something interesting and really exciting. Let us see what happens.”

Parwaz Hai Janoon

FIRST PAKISTANI FILM TO BE SCREENED IN SAUDI ARABIA

A

s an initiative to promote friendly ties between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry had announced that Pakistani films and dramas will be released in Saudi Arabia. Earlier today, the minister confirmed that Parwaaz Hai Junoon will be the first Pakistani film to release in Saudi Arabia. The move comes following an agreement between the two counties, as per which both countries will screen each other’s local content in order to promote cultural, social and political ties. “Pakistani movie ‘Parwaaz Hai Junoon‘ will be the first commercial movie to be screened in #SaudiArabia on 11th October, more films and more screenings around the world in coming months Insha’Allah #MOIB,” Fawad tweeted. The agreement happened after Saudi Arabia opened its first ever cinema for public earlier this year in Riyadh. The Saudi authorities intend to build around 350 cinemas with over 2,500 screens by 2030, hoping to generate around $1 billion as annual revenue. The decision to exhibit content from both countries will foster growth and promote the content of both countries which is a positive step.

After 9 months of painful pregnancy phase, the joy of holding one’s own child, their own creation, is unmatched. But delivering a baby is not a cake walk. We all know that there are majorly two ways to give birth to a child. One is the natural way (vaginal delivery) and the other is the Caesarean section, also called C-section. In the C-section method of delivery, surgery is used to deliver the babies. C-section is opted by mothers or prescribed by gynaecologists who think that vaginal delivery would risk the mother or her child’s health.

REVISITING NAMASTEY LONDON

S

imple’ man meets ‘complicated woman,’ they fall in love and the audience gets its happy ending. Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s 2007 film Namastey London is just that – it is a one-dimensional narrative with equally unidimensional characters, except maybe that of its lead female character Jasmeet (Katrina Kaif). The film’s primary plot revolves around Jasmeet, who is an Indian born and brought up in the UK. She loves to party, dress fashionably and drink the night away. One day, Jasmeet breaks the news to her parents (Rishi Kapoor and Nina Wadia) that she intends to marry a white guy, and things go haywire. Her parents pack up and move to their native place in order to secure the perfect groom for her. Enter Akshay Kumar’s Arjun Singh who instantly falls for Jasmeet. They move back to Britain where Akshay, like the quintessential Bollywood hero, wins the heart of his love.

Nothing is exceptional about this romantic drama. It is your regular Bollywood song-and-dance story that lacks heart and attempts to woo the viewers through a few fun songs, a good-looking cast and pretty locations. In fact, come to think of it, the film does stand out. Especially during that one scene which has since then gone

64

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

viral on the internet. Yes, I am talking about that sequence where Akshay Kumar gives an extremely patriotic speech about how we should be proud of where we belong to and in return, he gets a thunderous applause. So apart from the generalisation that the girl will fall for the desi boy, there is also the generalisation that people are racists, which is what prompted Akshay’s character to make that cringe-worthy speech in the first place. Since Namastey London was mediocre, filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah decided to go ahead and make a sequel (of sorts) called Namaste England. Not only is that idea unique, but the name of the movie is one-ofa-kind as well. And if you are one of those who has seen the trailer, then you will realise how the treatment of the plot is starkly different from that of Namastey London. Basically, get ready to feast your eyes on another forgettable romance.

My family also was iffy. My dad didn’t talk to me for a week when I told him I wanted to get married. It was because I wanted to get married. He was just like why do you want to get married, you’re so young and your career is doing so well and I was like but I want to get married. T

he current status of Bollywood is ironical for reasons more than one. While we boast of strong women characters and films that focus on women-led roles, it’s heartbreaking to see how several women in the industry are coming up with accounts of facing sexual harassment in the industry. For Actor-producer Saif Ali Khan, the fraternity members should make sure that the place is safe for women to work. Talking to IANS, Saif said, “Some ridiculous and inhuman things have happened in the past few years and I know that new talents might fear to step into the industry after knowing those stories of victims. But as a member of the fraternity, we have to make sure that women are treated with the utmost dignity and there is no abuse of power.” He further went on to share what makes him passionate and contend in his life. He added, “I like my creative job as an actor. Playing a part in a good film, building a character from the scratch for a story to perform... Such an opportunity is rare and a blessing.” For Saif, a life lived well with friends and family is important for him than running behind success.

Asked if she would consider singing for a Bollywood film, she told IANS: “I’ve never been asked that! Why not, I think that would be beautiful.” She has said in the past that she prefers acting over singing and does not like to sing in her acting projects. “I don’t know. My heart has always been in acting. But music has been extremely dominating in my life and I am grateful for both... I love both, but I would like to be more in acting,”

DESI GIRL PRIYANKA CHOPRA and her New Girl Squad

Priyanka Chopra is lately hitting the headlines too often (of course for the right reasons!). While our Desi girl is close to Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Manish Malhotra and few others in Bollywood

S

ince the time she gained access to the Hollywood industry, she is repeatedly seen with high-profile celebs. PC recently uploaded a picture on her Instagram profile, in which she was seen along with the Game Of Thrones star Sansa Stark aka Sophie Turner, Sonali Bendre, her stylist Mimi Cutrell and Dana Supnick-Guidoni, her PR manager. The ardent feminist posted it with a caption ‘girls will be girls’. We all are aware of PC’s engagement with Nick Jonas that took place in August, this year. Sophie Turner is engaged to Nick Jonas’s brother Joe Jonas. Technically, she is Priyanka’s future sister-in-law. These two couples are often seen going out on double dates. Recently, these couples were seen at the US open match along with PC’s mom Madhu Chopra. PC had even shared their picture on Instagram. Sonali Bendre, who unfortunately has been diagnosed with metastatic cancer, is undergoing treatment for the same in New York. Sonali and PC had even met Rishi Kapoor and Nitu Singh a few days back in the same city, where Rishi is also undergoing treatment for cancer. On 9th October, Priyanka attended the Tiffany Blue Book Collection gala in New York. She met Keeping Up With The Kardashians star, Kim Kardashian West, who was there to support the same event. They both even posed for pictures in front of Tiffany’s signature blue wall. PC was seen flaunting her Rs. 2.1 crore Tiffany engagement ring at the event.

This isn’t the first time our Desi Girl is seen during such high profile events and with celebs. PC was seen presenting an award at the Oscars last year. She has been attending the Met Gala event for the past two years. In May 2018, PC attended the much anticipated royal wedding of Prince Harry and her friend Meghan Markle. Priyanka is really making the best of her time in Hollywood and we wish her all the luck she needs to keep her streak going.

However, when it came to his film GAON, he was sure that he wanted to make it into a full-feature presentation. Thus, with GAON, Gautam stepped into the world of Bollywood. He felt that that was the only format that people from his community will recognise. “For the last 15 years, I’ve been making award-winning documentaries but my villagers won’t take me seriously as a filmmaker. They will believe me only if they can see my film at the nearest cinema hall, which is still 50 kms away and will never show a documentary film,” he says. He adds, “Therefore, I decided to make a Hindi Bollywood feature film which will play in the nearest cinema hall, where I can take my villagers to watch it. The story of ‘GAON’ is inspired by the true events of my own village in Jharkhand, India.” In fact, his love for cinema originated when he was in the village itself, “I grew up in a

Kuch Hota Hai

SALMAN KHAN Bollywood Actors Who Refused To Play Aman In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai And (Hopefully) Regretted It! Aamir Khan – Simply for not wanting to play the second fiddle to Shah Rukh, Aamir simply passed on the role.

Chandrachur Singh – Karan had placed the role to the actor who pandered over it a long time and eventually came back saying NO!

K

aran Johar’s debut directorial Kuch Kuch Hota has completed 20 years since its release in 1998. The story of friendship and romance has become a classic in its own right and was a box office blockbuster. But apart from the Rahul, Anjali and Tina who the story revolved around the film gave us a very special character to fondly remember and it was that of Aman. Understated in both the story and the screen time, Aman played by Salman Khan simply stole our hearts away with as mature and understanding fiancé of Anjali and became the kind of guy every girl secretly wanted to marry (even more than Rahul). While it is widely known that Karan had a hard time find a fit for Tina (played by Rani Mukerji) finding an Aman for the film was no way easier. The role was tossed about from one actor to another till Karan met Salman at a party and eventually got him on board to play the part. Here is who all rejected Aman before that.Mithanpura SHO Vijay Rai said.

Shammi Kapoor’s birth anniversary There’s no better way to honour the memory of the Yahoo star than to celebrate his exceptional musical legacy that includes such evergreen hits as Basant, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Kashmir Ki Kali, Junglee and Teesri Manzil.

W

ith his flamboyant and carefree style of dancing and singing, Shammi Kapoor, as filmmaker and fan Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra puts it, “invented the modern Bollywood hero.” Buffoonish, impulsive, madcap and rebellious, he was an unashamed OTT and proudly so. For many Shammi buffs, his most cherished memories are located in his songs. His musical legacy, as he teamed up with Mohammed Rafi, Shankar-Jaikishan, O.P Nayyar and R.D Burman, has become a part of his legend. On the Yahoo star’s birth anniversary today, we get his wife Neela Devi, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehta and biographer Rauf Ahmed to share their favourite Shammi Kapoor song. “As a nine-year-old, I had become a fan of my husband when I first saw him on stage in Bhavnagar. Shammi Kapoor used to perform with his father Prithviraj Kapoor. Those days, he acted in plays like Deewar, Ahuti and Pathan. The first thing that struck me about him was his singing. As I think about him, so many songs come to mind — from Kashmir Ki Kali, from Junglee I can think of “Din saara guzara”. Dil Deke Dekho, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Laila Majnu and Basant had great music. It’s difficult to pick but one of my most favourite songs at the moment is “Tum mujhe yun bhula na paoge” because he used to sing that a lot. Whenever we had a fight or I was angry

82

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

with him, he would sing this song and my heart melted. I couldn’t remain angry with him for too long. Whenever he sang, I forgot everything. He sang beautifully and that’s because he had learnt classical singing for six-seven years in childhood. He kept singing right till the end. Even when he was in ICU battling with death, he was humming and singing. He considered Mohammed Rafi as his musical soulmate. They understood each other. Rafisaab used to sing that way for him. Shammiji attended all recordings and give Rafisaab cues and they worked like a dream team. The last couple of years he was very fond of singing “Aaoge jab tum oh saajna” from Jab We Met. Even today I cry when that song plays. I remember Imtiaz Ali and Ranbir Kapoor used to come to our place and sit at his feet. They kept coming for two, three days until he said ‘yes’ to act in Rockstar. He was unwell, but he agreed because of the love and respect that Imtiaz and Ranbir gave him. Rockstar was his last film. Unfortunately, he didn’t live to see it. Ranbir just came and said, ‘Dadu, you have to do it.’ He couldn’t say ‘no’ to him. Ranbir had a very special relationship with him. Ranbir would go to the sets of Prem Granth and as a little kid, he used to crawl up to Shammi and sing in his ear. He had a little extra affection for Ranbir. Shammiji was a loving man. I was happy being a simple housewife and to be under his shadow. I come from a very conservative family. Shammi was a star and was married to Geeta Bali. I kept her like my conscience because one day I had to answer her about how I took care of her children and Shammiji. I always knew that she would be the first lady in his life and that I will get second billing. I was ready for it.”

AYUSHMANN KHURRANA I KNOW I’VE BECOME A STAR BUT DON’T WANT TO BELIEVE IT: Ayushmann Khurrana, who made his debut with Vicky Donor in 2012, has featured in several slice-of-life films, including Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Shubh Mangal Savdhan. While his Andhadhun got rave reviews, his latest Badhaai Ho is also getting a good response

S

ix years and nearly a dozen films later, Ayushmann Khurrana says his aim is to be consistent with his choices by retaining his innocence towards the craft.

much from all my films, successful or unsuccessful.

Ayushmann, who made his debut with Vicky Donor in 2012, has featured in several slice-of-life films, including Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Shubh Mangal Savdhan. His first thriller Andhadhun, directed by Sriram Raghavan, is the best reviewed film of the year. He has followed it up with Badhaai Ho, which is garnering positive response.

“You start believing in your intuition, your gut feeling. It ultimately depends on the choices you’re taking. Everyone is talented today. Your career graph depends on the choice of scripts, nothing else.”

“I approach all my films as my first. If you carry that innocence, it reflects in the camera. I know I have become a star but I don’t want to believe it. I want to be that simple, no fuss guy who approaches a film as if it is my first movie,” Ayushmann told PTI.

“To maintain the innocence depends on the kind of people you hang out with. I have made friends from the industry but I still hang out with my Chandigarh friends. Your family can keep you grounded, make you keep things real,” he says.

The 34-year-old actor believes he has learnt to trust his intuition when it comes to selecting films. “My acting career has been quite a ride. After ‘Vicky Donor’, I gave two-three unsuccessful films and that was a great learning curve. But ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ onwards it was cool. I learnt so

86

Ayushmann says the key to being grounded is to surround oneself with people who keep things real.

The “Meri Pyaari Bindu” actor says he is always on the look out for different subjects.

“The running thread of my career has been different scripts. There isn’t any reference point for any of the films — ‘Vicky Donor’, ‘Andhadhun’ or ‘Badhaai Ho’ so people find it exciting because they haven’t seen anything like this. I’m quite proud of it.” “Badhaai Ho”, which released on Thursday, features him as the son of an elderly couple who find out they would be turning parents for the third time. “It wasn’t just that one quirky line ‘what to expect when your mother is expecting’ but the whole script won me over. Everyone is a hero in the film from Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta to everyone. It’s such a balanced film which focuses on everyone,” he says.

“My first aspiration is to be consistent. Atul Kasbekar (producer) once said I’m like Rahul Dravid of Bollywood, I pick up the right deliveries and hit the sweet spot, but otherwise I am chill and never try too hard. That’s a great analogy, I love it.

MICHAEL CAINE

V

eteran actor Michael Caine has said casting couch was an open secret in Hollywood. The 85-year-old actor said though he knew about producers like Harvey Weinstein asking for sexual favours from aspiring starlets in return for a role, he did not know the extent of the problem. “In Hollywood, we were all aware of the casting couch. It was almost a joke. We knew it existed. But my view of the casting couch was that a young lady went to do an audition, the producer said, ‘Well you’ve got the part if you did this’, she said ‘I’m not doing that’ and he said ‘well you haven’t got the part’ and she left. “I thought it was terribly unfair that a talented actress might not get a part because she wouldn’t do something sexual with the producer. But it happened and there was nothing I could do about it. I was a nobody in Hollywood. I didn’t have the power of the big producers.

Harvey was a single character in himself. But there is one great thing if it can be described like that, about Harvey and his behaviour. It’s that actresses are safe now. No producer would dare to do anything sexually, because he knows he’s going to wind up in court, which is exactly where Harvey is,” he said.

G U RD EE P KO HL I DASTA AN-E-MOHABBAT GURDEEP KOHLI RECENTLY SPOKE TO INDIANEXPRESS.COM ABOUT HER ROLE QUEEN JODHA IN DASTAANE-MOHABBAT SALIM ANARKALI, COMPARISONS WITH OTHER ACTORSAND BEING A WORKING .MOTHERY Gurdeep Kohli is seen playing Queen Jodha in Colors’ historical drama Dastaan-E-Mohabbat: Salim Anarkali. The 38-year-old recently spoke to indianexpress.com about her role, comparisons with other actors and being a working mother. Sharing her reasons for taking up the series, Gurdeep said, “We have studied so much about this era and even watched films and shows. There are few roles that you really want to do. And I always wanted to do a period drama. The entire Rajasthani queen feel is amazing. So, when I got the opportunity, I grabbed it. It’s actually so much fun. I know there would be a lot of people who would want to be in my shoes. I am really happy with this role. My opening scene even had me fighting in the battlefield like a warrior. And people will see so many shades of Jodha, from being a mother, wife to even a sautan.” The actor will be seen playing mother to the grownup Shaheer Sheikh. Ask her if that was a reason of worry for her and she smiled to say, “Not really. See, Jodha would have been just 14-15 years when she got married and then had kids shortly. In this new age, we find it odd but that’s what happened then. Also, as an actor that’s my challenge to play the character convincingly and make it look real.” The role of Jodha has been portrayed by Paridhi Sharma on television and Aishwarya Rai in Bollywood. When asked if she feels there would be any comparisons, Gurdeep said, “Everybody has their own way of portraying a character. So, neither do I fear it nor do I feel people will compare us. Each will have its own charm.” While many actors see a roadblock after getting married and having kids, Gurdeep’s career has been on the up and up. “I think my kids have been really lucky. After being a mother, I am being floored with work. Hats off to the makers who are offering me such meaty roles. It clearly shows that the stereotype has been broken. Now, being a mother will not stop actors from getting good roles. I really feel blessed with this change.”

4 Upcoming Hollywood Films of 2018 Bollywood Should Be Really Wary of

B

ollywood can no longer fear itself when it comes to box office clashes; it also has to fear the movies that come in from the West. Well, not Hindi cinema doesn’t need to be scared of all the Hollywood movies, per se. But the big ones, especially superhero film, animated movies and those high on special effects can work as a real threat to its Bollywood competitors. In 2018, an Avengers Infinity War has managed to cross the Rs 200 crore mark at the box office, something a Salman Khan film this year (Race 3) couldn’t manage to do. Why, just a couple weeks back, it was a Hollywood film (Venom) that manage to dominate the box office over the opening weekend, over the two other Bollywood releases, AndhaDhun and LoveYatri. While we don’t have any Marvel superhero movies coming up in 2018, Hollywood has not exhausted its big-spectacle movies for the

94

year. So here we have made a list of Hollywood movies that could pose as big threats to its Bollywood competitors. Also note, that the release dates mentioned are tentative (based on either officially announced dates or their US release dates), and are therefore subject to change.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Tentative Release Date: November 16 India has many big Harry Potter fans, which the first spin-off also enjoyed when it came out a couple of years back. The sequel, going by the trailer, adds more interesting beasts and actors, like Jude Law with a bigger role for Johnny Depp, and therefore, has a bigger chance to win over the crowds. Bollywood Competitors: Mohalla Assi

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Tentative Release Date: December 14 The only Marvel superhero movie in this period, if you consider an animated movie in this genre. The trailer of the film has been well-received and the prospect of seeing

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

various iterations of Spider-Man is an exciting idea. Bollywood Competitors: Mangal Ho

Aquaman

Tentative Release Date: December 21 Aquaman is the only true-blue superhero movie coming out in this period. The DC superhero film, starring Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman and Amber Heard, has just got a huge boost with an awe-inducing 5-minute trailer that was launched recently. The only issue is that Aquaman might not come out on December 21, seeing if the competition from Bollywood (below) can give it adequate screens. Bollywood Competitors: Zero

Mary Poppins Returns

Tentative Release Date: December 25 Disney’s live-action films have been a hit-n-miss among the Indian audiences. While The Jungle Book and Beauty and The Beast adaptations were successful, Pete’s Dragon, A Wrinkle in Time and Christopher Robin were not so. Can Mary Poppins Returns fall in the previous category> Bollywood Competitors: Simmba So which of these upcoming movies are you most excited to watch this year? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. DesiPages

Chitrangda Singh:

Nikkhil Advani wanted an actress who could hold her own in a frame without too many lines It’s one thing to enact a scene replete with powerful punchlines andanother to hold your own without dialogue.Chitrangda Singh does the latter in ‘Baazaar’. The actress was the last artiste to come on board. Sheplays Mandiraben, a woman from an affluent family whose marriage goes through a roller-coaster while her husband Shakun Kothari (Saif Ali Khan) chases money and power. When asked why she was the last actor to be cast in the multi-starrer, Chitrangda says, “Maybe they were focussing on casting the others. Nikkhil Advani wanted an actress who could hold her own in a frame even without having too many lines. My character Mandiraben doesn’t have too many lines but has a presence throughout the film. She stands up to someone who has these really powerful, fleshed out portions to deliver, which is Saif’s character Shakun. Mandira is a family person who doesn’t understand the stock market; she doesn’t understand power games but she stands against him, dignified. Nikkhil wanted someone who could bring in all of this with ease. And it took them a while to reach me.” The actress has shorter screen-time than Radhika Apte, the other leading lady of the film, whose role is diametrically different from hers. While Chitrangda plays a home-maker, Radhika plays a professional in the stock market. When asked how it was to share screen space with her, Chitrangda says, “We don’t have too many scenes together but it was a lot of fun working with her. She’s a very secure actor and knows her job really well.” DesiPages

NARGIS FAKHRI SHE may have started off her career in a high-profile Bollywood film, but model turned-actress Nargis Fakhri has been branching off into interesting directions in recent years, including music and her latest film 5 Weddings.

T

he American actress plays the lead role in the English language comedy-drama about a US-based reporter who reluctantly journeys to India to write about weddings and finds loves in an unexpected way. She stars alongside a strong cast including award-winning Indian actor Rajkummar Rao as well as Hollywood legend Bo Derek in the interesting-looking release that promises plenty of laughs. Eastern Eye caught up with Nargis to talk about her movie 5 Weddings, future plans, comedy and more. How do you look back on your film journey? My journey in film has been a tumultuous one. As in life, this career path has many ups and downs, and you learn through trial and error. It’s also been challenging and exciting, giving me opportunities I never ever dreamed of. Who do you play in the film? I’ve been very lucky to be a part of 5 Weddings. I feel really connected to the character of Shania as there are a lot of similarities between her and my own life. I love how Shania is American, but has a multi-ethnic heritage and is forced to connect with her roots, which ultimately becomes life-changing for her. My life has an almost identical story. Tell us more about the movie’s story? In the film 5 Weddings, an American jour-

96

nalist travels to India to cover the colourful vibrancy of Indian weddings, but there is something more serious interwoven with the joy and fun of these traditional ceremonies. The film goes beyond the fluff to explore the human component of hijras – a sect of transgender dancers who have been an integral part of Indian weddings for centuries. Conflict arises when this journalist decides to delve a little more into the life of a hijra, but her government-designated liaison officer (Rajkummar Rao) is instructed to keep her story censored. As the coverage of Indian weddings unfolds, so does a colourful mosaic of lost loves, transgender tangles and culture clashes along the heartfelt journey of life, symbolised by the universal ups and downs of a wedding celebration. Your favourite moment in the movie? I really enjoyed working with Rajkummar Rao – not only is he talented, but he is also a great co-actor and a good human. Also working with Namrata (Singh Gujral), our director, was always fun. When you talk about what scenes were a favourite, I would have to say attending the different weddings were fun and working with the hijras too. What is Rajkummar like as a leading man? He is lovely and talented. He is very easy to work with and to be around, which makes work easier and fun.

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

What is the director like to work with? Namrata was a dream to work with. She really knows how to get the emotions that she needs out of you. She’s also very funny and fun to work with, yet very in tune with her actors and could empathise with us as actors and the characters. I feel pretty blessed to have the chance to work with Namrata. She’s talented and great to work with. She knows how to take care of her actors. How much do you enjoy doing comedy? In real life, a lot of people tell me I’m funny. It’s easy to be funny in everyday situations, but I think doing comedy on screen is a bit tougher. It’s all in the writing and then the timing with actors. But it’s definitely a lot of fun to be a part of a comedy. This film was not a full-on comedy, but definitely has its funny moments. Will you have a big fat Indian wedding? I doubt it. I enjoy attending weddings, but I don’t see myself having one or at least not a big one. I’m pretty simple so wouldn’t want something so extravagant for myself. What would be the best thing you like about Indian weddings? I love the food, music and seeing everyone dressed up. And, of course, seeing the bride and groom happy.

FAWAD KHAN’S Maula Jatt release date confirmed

B

ilal Lashari’s much anticipated directorial venture, a continuation of Nasir Adeeb’s original series that began with Vehshi Jatt in 1975, has been in the news for quite some time. Producer of the film, Ammara Hikmat, has now confirmed to Something Haute that the movie will release on Eidul Fitr 2019.

Nasir Adeeb’s Vehshi Jatt introduced the character of Maula Jatt for the first time in 1975 and the series of ‘Jatt’ films continued with Maula Jatt in 1979. Sultan Rahi immortalised the iconic role and several films were released under the Jatt umbrella. Bilal Lashari’s Maula will be a new story, made in the series with the same characters. We’ll now see Fawad Khan as Maula Jutt, Hamza Ali Abbasi as Noori Natt, along with Mahira Khan and Humaima Mallick in lead roles. With Bilal Lashari on the director’s seat, we can expect a film that will be aesthetically enjoyable and technically sound. Thankfully, we have a date in sight now. Fans are excited about the project because Fawad and Hamza will be reprising iconic characters for avatars they’ve never been seen in before. There’s also the Mahira-Fawad reunion to look forward to and a chance to see the firebrand Humaima Mallick in action. Bilal Lashari’s Maula Jatt is said to be Pakistan’s most expensive action film ever made. We’d like to point out that this is not a remake or a reboot of the original, rather a continuation in the series. It appears that the release will clash with Salman Khan’s Bharat, which is also slated to release on Eid next year. But as is tradition in Pakistan, we expect Bollywood features to be held back in order to allow more space to Pakistani films. That said, we do think Pakistan will flock to a Fawad Khan film over a Salman Khan film any day. We do hope local filmmakers, however, will show some intelligence and plan their release dates sensibly. It’ll be silly, if not outright suicidal, to release alongside this one. As for now, we are anxiously waiting for the trailer, which should make it to cinema screens soon.

BOLLYWOOD MEGASTAR

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has announced that he will pay off crippling debts for 850 farmers in his home state, throwing his support behind agrarian workers who have been demanding more government support..

Mr Bachchan, 76, said he also previously helped more than 350 farmers in the western state Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai, by paying off their .loans It has been a most satisfying experience to give some to them our countrymen that sacrificed their lives for us”, he wrote on .his personal blog More needs to be done from“ other parts of the country too. It ”.shall be done

Indian farmers have faced a turbulent year with soaring fuel costs, monsoon-damaged crops and empty promises of government minimum-price support causing tens of thousands of them to take out exorbitant loans from moneylenders or microfinance banks to make up shortfalls. Mr Bachchan said: “Over 350 farmers loans that were difficult to pay off , and to prevent them from committing suicide, was paid off some days back too.

have been identified and their loans amounting to over Rs 550m (611,000) shall be taken care of.” The agricultural crisis has seen tens of thousands of farmers fatally despairing, accounting for 11 per cent of suicides in India. The latest available data for 2016 showed 11,370 took their lives that year. Estimates suggest 300,000 have killed themselves in the past 10 years, though there is no consensus on the exact reason. There have been several demonstrations this year by farmers - thousands marched on Delhi two weeks ago, only to be met with police using teargas and water cannon.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE

RANVEER SINGH PS: Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are expected to get married on December 2 this year, so if at all Ranveer and Deepika’s wedding is happening next month then get ready to end this year with a bang. Are Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh getting married next month? Or is theirwedding pushed to 2019? - These are the only kinds of questions that are doing the rounds on the internet right now and we really don't see any confirmation to happen until the bride and groom decide to break the news. But as the talk in town keeps getting hotter with every passing day, a DNA source suggests that although Ranveer and DP are trying hard to take the focus off their impending wedding but they have finalised November 13 as the D-day. Yes.. Turns out the wedding will be a 4 day affair from November 12-November 16 with all the ceremonies taking place and the marriage will be held on the 13th of November; which is basically after less than a month from now. It is left to see if this really turns out to be true considering Deepika anRanveer are expected to address the media shortly.

106

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

Interestingly, Ranveer in his recent interview refused to mention about thewedding and instead said how his only focus right now is 'films and acting. He said, “ Right now, I am focussed on the work that I am doing in films. I am doing back-to-back films. I have been very blessed to have some really amazing projects at hand and I tremendously value these opportunities.” What do you think? Will Deepika and Ranveer wedding be held this year or early next year? PS: Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are expected to get married on December 2 this year, so if at all Ranveer and Deepika’s wedding is happening next month then get ready to end this year with a bang.

66 YEARS AFTER THE FIRST INDIA VS. PAKISTAN CRICKET TEST MATCH A Dummy’s Guide to Understanding Cricket

fter Pakistan gained its test status in 1952, India were Pakistan’s first opponents, and theytook a strong side to India under the leadership of Abdul Kardar. Imagine just five years after the brutal bloodshed of the India/Pakista partition. Was the game of Cricket just a friendly sport being played against comrades? This game may have been a replacement for the anger and anguish the countries were feeling toward one another. Some may say, a symbolic war. They suffered a major blow when fast bowler Khan Mohammad was injured early in the tour, but they really paid for not possessing a quality spinner. India’s pair of Vinoo Mankad and Ghulam Ahmed took 37 wickets (outs) between them, and the batting of Vijay Hazare and Polly Umrigar ensured they had plenty of runs. Mankad grabbed 13 for 131 as India won the first Test at New Delhi by an inning. Pakistan

112

squared the series at Lucknow as Fazal Mahmood exploited a matting wicket to take 12 for 94 and Nazar Mohammad carried his bat for 124. India’s batsman and an early four-wicket burst from Lala Amarnath restored India’s lead with a 10-wicket win at Bombay. The fourth Test was washed out after two days, and India secured the series with a tame draw at Calcutta. Tests: India 2 Pakistan 1 Drawn 2 Now what does this all mean? A lot of parent, grandparents, and those of a similar generation who have immigrated from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, or various South Asian Countries might have a clue as to the true nature of the “sports talk” above. However, the children of these immigrants have no idea as to what I am talking about. Though you may be an invested South Asian Community member, with a love for my country

and its culture, you maybe unaware of a huge aspect of it’s culture. It’s favorite sport, Cricket. Understanding the Game, it’s Rules, and Scoring The rules of cricket are not that complicated but can confound Americans weaned on baseball. Here’s an attempt to explain the basics of the game: Cricket is played on a giant oval field, with a rectangular pitch in the middle. Each team has 11 players, and the teams take turns batting and fielding. The batting team sends two people to the pitch at a time. The two batters stand at either end of the pitch in front of a two-foot-tall, 10-inch wide wicket. One batter tries to hit a ball that’s delivered by the bowler. In addition to the bowler and the wicket-keeper (a position akin to catcher) the other nine members of the team in the field stand DesiPages

at strategic spots around the oval cricket ground. Once the ball bounces, the batter tries to smack it with a bat. If the ball hits the wicket, the batter is out. If the batter hits the ball, he races to the opposite wicket, while his teammate races toward his wicket, trading places in the process. Runs are scored according to how far the ball flies or how many times the runners can tag the wickets with their bat before the fielding team retrieves the ball or throws them out. Bowled - To be bowled out is when the bowler successfully bowls the ball past the batsman’s defenses such that it crashes into the stumps (wickets) and knocks at least one off.

The same rule applies that the stumps must be broken while the batsman is out of the place (aka crease) , so if a batsman swings and misses but remains established behind the white line, they cannot be out stumped.

Leg Before Wicket - The cricketing rule of leg before wicket, or LBW, surely ranks as one of the more complex rules in all of sport. Imagine the Caught - To be caught out is self-explanatory. If the ball is caught by a difficulty of explaining soccer’s offside fielder after striking the batsman’s bat and/or glove, and before the ball hits the rule, crossed with the byzantine legal ground, the batsman is out. If, however, the ball only strikes another part of the definition of a catch in the NFL. The batsman’s body or armory (e.g. legs or helmet, and without hitting the bat or essence is this: if the ball strikes the glove), the batsman cannot be out caught. batsman on the leg (or any other part of Run Out - To be run out is similar to being thrown out in baseball. If the batsthe body) without first hitting his or her men attempt to run, and the fielding team is able to throw the ball into one of bat or glove, and the ball would have the sets of stumps before the batsman can make it to the white line (the ‘crease’) otherwise gone on to hit the wickets, the at that end of the pitch, that batsman is out. batsman is out. Today, umpires have access to technolStumped - The stumping is essentially a sub-set of the run out, where the wicket-keeper breaks the stumps of the batsman after the batsman has inadvert- ogy which not only tracks how the ball did travel through the air (like in tennis) ently moved out of his or her place while swinging at and missing at the ball. but predicts where the ball would have travelled had it not come into contact with the batsman. This technology is used in many of the higher forms of the game—although India is notably skeptic and refuses to consent to the use of the technology in its matches—and teams are given a prescribed number of reviews per game. Scoring

Throughout a batting team’s innings, they will accumulate runs, and the fielding team will accumulate outs. If at a certain point the batting team has scored 72 runs and has lost three wickets, their score will be ‘3/72’, or “three for seventy-two”. If that team scores two runs off of the next ball, their score ticks along to 3/74—because they have still only lost three wickets, but have now scored 74 runs. Though slightly more complex than your everyday sport, Cricket is exciting sport! The now friendly rivalry between India and Pakistan has complex roots and history. However, even 66 years later and half-way across the world, people gather at restaurants and friends’ homes to watch the Cricket Matches, adorning the colors of their countries with fierce passion and love in their hearts. TOP FIVE 5 ways to use Avocados that aren’t Guacamole

MAKE A CHOCOLATE MOUSSE! Avocados are mild in flavor, and—as we said—add ample plant-based creaminess. For a wholesome dessert that’s also a great way to use avocados that are on their way out the door in terms of overripeness, make a chocolate mousse. Here’s how to prepare avocado mousse: Combine 1 very ripe avocado, 6 semisweet ounces melted chocolate, 3 tablespoons honey, and a pinch of salt in a food processor until smooth. If you want that extra creamy, light fluffiness, whip some cream in a bowl and fold it into the avocado and chocolate mixture. Spoon the mixture into bowls and give it to unsuspecting friends and see if they can guess the secret ingredient (spoiler alert: they can’t). Need a recipe? Follow this one.

SWAP FOR MAYO. Find an avocado that’s super-ripe. Mash it with a spoon in a big bowl. Add some shredded chicken. Add salt and whatever seasonings you like. Mix and pile on toasted wheat with some crunchy romaine.

SOAP

DEEP-CONDITIONING HAIR MASK

ANTI-WRINKLE EYE TREATMENT

Moisturize dry hair with three simple ingredients: avocado, bananas, and olive oil. Mash up a ripe avocado and banana in a bowl until it becomes a lumpfree paste. Add a tablespoon of olive oil and a couple of drops of essential oil. Stir all of the ingredients until you have a smooth mixture and apply to damp hair. Massage into your scalp and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Thoroughly rinse your hair with warm water. Shampoo and condition as usual and see how silky and smooth your hair gets. You won’t be disappointed with the results!

Avocados have antiaging prop erties that will help you get rid of wrinkles and look younger. Collect leftover pulp from avocado skins with a spoon. Directly apply the pulp to the socket area around your eyes and place a cold cotton pad on top of each eye. Lie down and relax for about 15 minutes while the vitamins in the avocado work its magic!

You can make your own natural soaps at home without leaving your skin covered in residue. Melt avocado purée, water, coconut oil, olive oil, and lye (be careful while handling lye, otherwise known as sodium hydroxide) in a slow cooker or on the stovetop. Add a couple drops of essential oil such as lavender or peppermint oil. Pour into a mold and let the soap harden for a few weeks. The soap creates a creamy lather that is safe for sensitive skin.

TEA Avocado pits are full of antioxidants that can help boost your immune system. Chop up an avocado pit and place it in a tea diffuser with boiling water. Pour into a mug and enjoy! The tea can be bitter, so try sweetening it up with coconut palm sugar or honey.

DEFEND AGAINST DIABETES If you have diabetes, it’s important to pay attention to the types of fats you’re consuming. Healthy fats from avocado are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids that can help the body process glucose and use insulin more effectively. Avocados are also rich in beneficial nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, and vitamin E.

The healing power of the breath

P

rana’ – a concept which starts with the breath. If only we would sometimes stop and breathe, just breathe in the ‘Life force’ the ‘Elan Vital’, the ‘Chi’, the Prana – we would certainly feel energized. But yet, in the continuous self-created pressure environment we live in, we seldom take a moment to breathe. In Ayurveda, when we speak about the Vata-Pitta-Kapha, the Tridosha and the bodily manifestation of the Panch Mahabut – the Five great elements, we speak of the air

as the most important factor as we can live without food or water for a longer time but would not last too long without breathing. Ayurveda explains that the body has 5 types of Vayu The word vayu translates as “wind,” connoting all-pervading movement. Vayu is a vehicle for activities and experiences within the body, or a “force” that moves throughout the system controlling functions such as digestion, respiration, nerve impulses act. These pancha pranas are categorized as: Prana vayu, Apana vayu, Samana vayu, Udana vayu and Vyana vayu. Though

120

they function in unison together, each governing a specific area of the body. They can be thought of as elemental forces that are not just the physical, but govern emotional qualities and mental energies, fundamental to physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The practices of yoga, especially asana and pranayama, optimize the functioning of these vayus as well as bring them under our influence. Their energies can then be used to uplift ourselves and restore vibrant health. When the breath is imbalanced, life is imbalanced. So, take it easy, literally catch your breath and just breathe. BOLLYWOOD:

HOPES FOR FESTIVE FIREWORKS WITH 1,200 CRORE RIDING ON LAST QUARTER

B

ollywood hopes for festive fireworks with 1,200 crore riding on last quarter A string of big-budget upcoming movies, including Aamir Khan’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar’s ‘2.0’, Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Zero’ and Ranveer Singh’s ‘Simmba’ are set to light up the festive season. Aamir Khan has booked Diwali for his action adventure epic Thugs of Hindostan that also features Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif. New Delhi: Bollywood is ready to put up its grandest show of the year yet. About 30 big-ticket movies are lined up for release over the next three months in what is traditionally the industry’s most lucrative period. “The trend for the past decade has been that the

122

really big-budget films are slotted beginning Dussehra and go on till Christmas. It is definitely the most important quarter of the year,” said Devang Sampat, director, India Strategic Initiatives, at the theatre chain firm Cinepolis India. According to Atul Mohan, editor of trade magazine Complete Cinema, about 1,200 crore rides on these big films slated for the last three months of the year. Clearly, what works in their favour is the trend of grand festival weekends paying off big time. “While Diwali has traditionally been and continues to remain the biggest attraction of the year, Christmas has emerged as another very promising period thanks to Aamir Khan and his blockbusters that bring in anything between 300 crore and 400 crore,” Mohan said.

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

However, this year Aamir Khan has booked Diwali for his action adventure epic Thugs of Hindostan that also features Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif. The Yash Raj Films production that the studio describes as “a Diwali spectacle promising jaw-dropping action, visual extravaganza and a larger-than-life cinematic experience”, is said to have cost 150 crore. Before that, Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra will usher in Dussehra with their romantic film Namaste England, directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Set to release later in November is Rajinikanth’s delayed but much-awaited science fiction film 2.0, a sequel to his 2010 blockbuster Enthiran. It co-stars Akshay Kumar and its total investment is pegged at over 500 crore. The Christmas weekend has gone to Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero, a romantic drama where he plays a short man. The film is directed by Aanand L. Rai. Not giving Khan’s film much space to breathe, the year is set to close with Ranveer Singh’s action comedy Simmba, which is slated to hit theatres on 28 December. Plus, there are a bunch of exciting releases in between—from AyushmannKhurrana-starrer Badhaai Ho to Total Dhamaal, a comedy starring Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Clearly, there is much to look forward to, especially considering that both Thugs of Hindostan and 2.0 will be released in at least three languages, the latest strategy to reach out to pan-Indian audiences. “The year has already gone well with business reaching the 2,9003,000 crore earnings of 2017. If the last three months turn out as expected, we could see a 20-25% jump over last year,” Mohan said.

OPINIONS |

KATRINA KAIF

IS ONE OF BOLLYWOOD’S BEST ROLE MODELS Aliza Ali

KATRINA KAIF IS ONE OF THE PRIMARY EXAMPLES OF A STRONG, INDEPENDENT WOMAN WHO PLAYED TO HER STRENGTHS AND MADE HER MARK ON AN ENTIRE INDUSTRY.

I

have many times in my life spoken to a close friend or family member who had either a neutral or negative opinion about Katrina Kaif with the follow up comment, “She’s popular because of her looks.” Despite the compliment of the sentence, it’s obviously meant as an insult on the other aspects of the model turned actress’s personality. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Katrina Kaif is an enigma and should be looked at as a fierce role model for women. Kaif, who

124

was raised my single mother, was not as welcome in the industry or by fans like other actresses of her caliber today. Her looks have certainly helped her Bollywood journey, but to say that only her looks are the keys to her success is a gross understatement and an insult to an intelligent woman who capitalized on her skills. There have been plenty of beautiful actresses that have come and gone from Bollywood. Some with memorable names, others with memorable roles. Kaif, very early on in her career, understood that due to her language block she would have a harder time committing to roles with strict Hindi lines. She made the decision to improve her Hindi, capitalize on her fierce dance skills, and become the fitness queen. Without calling quits Kaif struggled but with the grace and eloquence of a Goddess. She flourished and proved her worth in Cactus Flower directed by David Dhawan. For her role as a suicidal model, Kaif received the Stardust Award for Breakthrough Performance – Female. According to Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com, “Katrina’s Disney princess-like charm adds to her adorable screen presence”. She stunned audiences with her amazing performance New York, but even with her impressive acting evolution she continued to look stunning and charm the world with her super hit item songs. Understanding your strengths and capitalizing on them is not everyone’s cup of tea. Many people enter a work environment and re-

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

alize that they may be less skilled than others and give up trying to make their way to the top. Not Kaif. She understood that to become one of the reigning queens of Bollywood she would have to work 10x harder and she did. Kaif was able to grow her fan base while she evolved as an actor, which is no small feat. She utilized her performance skills, her work ethic, and her remarkable discipline in her fitness and health to stay in the spotlight. To me, Katrina Kaif is the trifecta of a strong woman: Ambitious, Tough, and Knows her Worth. I idolize Kaif for these qualities and work everyday to be a woman like her. Be strong and resilient like Katrina. Capitalize on your skill set and impress the world with what you do best while to evolve in the skills you need to work on. Make a name for yourself in the lives of everyone around you and leave your mark. It would do you wonders to be like Katrina Kaif. Aliza Ali is a graduate of Ohio University with bachelor degrees in Biological Sciences and World Religions. She works for Cosmologics at Harvard University Center for Science, Religion, and Culture. She has written a thesis on the history of feminism in the United States and its relationship to science, medicine, and religion. She is currently studying the relationship of Islamic Science and Mysticsm.

Talking about the director, Shruti shares, “I have always been a fan of Mahesh Manjrekar’s work. I like the way he tells his stories. He manages to focus on aspects of human beings and of society, which we don’t often see in cinema. I chose to do his film because I have a solid role. Women always have a strong role to play in our lives. It could be our mother, our domestic

In Mahesh Manjrekar’s films, women find their way into a realistic story in the most convincing way.” While the actress has managed to strike a balance between Hindi, Telugu and Tamil films, she is someone who isn’t seen letting her hair down with her colleagues form the industry. Shruti reveals, “In the beginning, like everybody else, I was trying to find my feet and trying to figure out where I fit in. Friends Forever

mouse and a frog were friends. Every morning the frog would hop out of his pond and go to visit his friend who lived in a hole in the side of a tree. He would return home at noon. The mouse delighted in his friend’s company unaware that the friend was slowly turning into an enemy. The reason? The frog felt slighted because though he visited the mouse everyday, the mouse on his part, had never made an attempt to visit him. One day he felt he had been humiliated enough. When it was time for him to take leave of the mouse, he tied one end of a string around his own leg, tied the other end to the mouse’s tail, and hopped away, dragging the hapless mouse behind

him. The frog dived deep into the pond. The mouse tried to free himself but couldn’t, and soon drowned. His bloated body floated to the top. A hawk saw the mouse floating on the pond’s surface. He swooped down, and grabbing the mouse in his talons, flew to the branch of a nearby tree. The frog, of course, was hauled out of the water too. He desperately tried to free himself, but couldn’t and the hawk soon put an end to his struggles. In Africa they have a saying: ‘Don’t dig too deep a pit for your enemy, you may fall into it yourself’.

AYUSHMANN KHURRANA’S ‘BADHAAI HO’ “Don’t treat your mom as Goddess and put her on some high pedestal, she is a wife and above all she is a woman,” says Renee (Sanya Malhotra) as she tries to reason with her boyfriend Nakul (AyushmanKhurrana) who has forced himself into a seclusion after coming to know about his mother’s pregnancy. This comes at a time when he was planning to marry Renee (Sanya Malhotra). Badhaai Ho tackles with the subject of middle-age pregnancy and how it touches upon the lives of three generations of a quintessential Delhi family. Here are some reasons why we feel Badhaai Ho is one of the most progressive films of recent times. The amazing, amazing Neena Gupta: Bollywood has never been kind to this incredible actor. Time and again, Neena Gupta has mastered the thankless art

of disappearing into characters. Here, she is Priyamvada (Neena Gupta), a mother of two “grown up” sons, unexpectedly finds herself pregnant again. Her husband Jeetender Kaushik (Gajraj Rao), a TTE who is nearing retirement, doesn’t know where to hide his face. More shocked are his two sons who could not take it that their parents still have an active sex life. Gupta brings in a delightful mix of weariness and determination to her character. Yes, she is initially embarrassed with the situation but she also knows what she wants. Even when she is tackling the disapproval of her family, it is done with kindness and grace. In her quiet determination, we see a different kind of feminism. The men and their journey: Yes, AyushmannKhurrana is delightful as the perpetually embarrassed son, but this film is also about his journey to acceptance. Indeed, he is the prude who needs to loosen up in this story. In contrast, the shy middle-aged

father comes across as more sexually liberated person. He reads his wife poetry on rainy nights, he shaves off his mustache on his wife’s insistence, he quietly supports her decisions. The women actually stand up for each other: The most amazing camaraderie in Badhaai Ho is shared by its female characters. Veteran actor, Surekha Sikri, excels as the typical Dadi who blurts out home truths and defends her daughter-in-law even when she constantly bickers with her. She

144

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

is a product of patriarchy, yes. She spews venom on her when she finds out about the pregnancy but also defends her when she realises that the situation is getting out of control. The bond of empathy between the female characters is resilient and unyielding. Sanya Malhotra, the son’s love interest, is the voice of reason of the film. She constantly chides her boyfriend for being so harsh on his own mother. He encourages him to accept her as a woman too. DesiPages

Portugal

Traveller

If

you’re planning to visit Europe in the upcoming new year, plan your vacation to Portugal , which has also has more hours of sunshine a year than any other European country, perfect for exploring. On a glorious coastal trail, you’ll face the churning surf that Henry the Navigator conquered to explore Africa and the New World. And we’ll come face to face with the Portuguese people from salt-panners to winemakers. If you love gorgeous blue waters and island-hopping, but feel too old or partied out to go to Ibiza and Mallorca, editor-in-chief of Airbnb Mag, Mike Steele, recommends Sintra, Portugal. Only 40 minutes from Lisbon by train, the town is much bigger than the islands, and offers a host of other things to do besides beaches (although Steele highly recommends both Praia da Adraga and Praia da Ursa).

The Place to be in 2019 is Portugal

Some other bucket list-worthy landmarks include architectural gem Pena Palace, the medieval-style Castle of the Moors, and Cabo de Roca, a scenic cape located at the most westerly point of mainland Europe. Fanciful to an extreme, the architectural fabric of Pena finds much of its inspiration in the Moorish, Gothic and Manueline motifs of Portuguese art (red buildings), as well as in the Wagnerian spirit of the Schinkel Castles of Central Europe (yellow buildings). Here are 4 travel tips, to make your Portugal tour spectacular: GO OUT OF SEASON While it’s true that parts of Portugal can be overcrowded and busy in high summer, they are surprisingly quiet out of season. Autumn is a lovely time to visit – the sea is at its warmest (the Algarve average water temperature in October is 21˚C) while the sun still shines for an average of seven hours a day. VENTURE OFF THE BEATEN TRACK In Portugal it pays to get off the tour-

EAT AND DRINK LIKE THE LOCALS Portuguese food and drinks are usually excellent quality and very good value, so stick to ordering what is grown, caught or made locally. You’ll find a fine array of fresh fish and seafood everywhere, while Portuguese local cheeses are hugely underrated. The local house wine will almost certainly be excellent. Local beers and spirits will cost around half the price (and taste pretty much the same) as the branded international equivalents

BE PREPARED TO WALK The Portuguese can be very reluctant to venture far from their vehicles, which is why you’ll see often a roadside lay-by full of families picnicking next to their cars. So, you don’t have to walk very far up a track or away from the car park to have the beach, woodland or beauty spot completely to yourself. | DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

Health The Facts on Hypothyroidism The Facts on Hypothyroidism It’s estimated that 42 million South Asian Person’s have some sort of thyroid disorder, the most prominent of which: hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism results when the thyroid gland, part of the endocrine system, isn’t producing enough thyroid hormones. These important hormones are responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism and many other functions. You may have heard of hypothyroidism, but here are some things about it you might not know about it. Do you feel anxiety or depression for absolutely no reason? Symptoms of hypothyroidism such as

166

constipation, depression, and trouble sleeping are often not attributed to an underactive thyroid. The hormones are harder to control, and people can feel on an emotional roller coaster. People tend to get stressed more easily, get splitting headaches, and experience sadness and anxiety. This is normal, and with acknowledgement, controllable. Did you know? Women are much more likely to develop hypothyroidism than men and Hypothyroidism in the U.S. is most often caused by an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which causes the immune system to attack the thyroid gland. Finally, you may not know you have it and there’s no way to prevent it. More than half of the estimated 27 million Americans who have thyroid disease are not aware of the imbalance. HEALTH, WEIGHT, AND HYPOTHYROIDISM Here’s what we do know. Hypothyroidism affects your metabolism and can cause patients who go untreated to gain weight extremely fast. Loosing weight can also be an issue. If you feel like you are working out a lot and not losing weight, do not give up! A person with Hypothyroidism must follow these rules in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and balanced weight.

1. Take your medication on time, in the morning. Your medica-

tion will help you thyroid so that your metabolism can stay on track.

2. Try to eat a balanced diet. Hypothyroid patients CAN NOT follow traditional diet plans (such as Atkins, Keto, and etc) as their thyroid requires them certain foods. Here is a list: FOODS TO EAT a. Iodine: Iodine is an essential mineral that is needed to make thyroid hormones. Thus, people with an iodine deficiency might be at risk of hypothyroidism. Iodine supplements are not necessary as you can get plenty iodine from your diet. Some studies have also shown that too much may damage the thyroid gland. So use Iodine Salt and try some seaweed! b. Selenium: Selenium helps the body “activate” thyroid hormones so they can be used by the body. This essential mineral also has antioxidant benefits, which means it may protect the thyroid gland from damage by molecules called free radicals. Add Selenium to your diet by including Brazil nuts, tuna, sardines, eggs, and legumes. However, avoid taking a selenium supplement unless advised by your doctor. Supplements provide large doses, and selenium may be toxic in large amounts. c. Zinc: Like selenium, zinc also helps the body “activate” thyroid hormones. Studies also show that zinc may help the body regulate TSH, the hormone that tells the thyroid gland to release thyroid hormones. You should aim to eat more zinc-rich DesiPages

foods like oysters and other shellfish, beef and chicken.

FOODS TO AVOID d. Goitrogens: Goitrogens are compounds that may interfere with the normal function of the thyroid gland. They get their name from the term “goiter,” which is an enlarged thyroid gland that may occur with hypothyroidism. i. Soy foods: Tofu, tempeh, edamame, etc. ii. Certain vegetables: Cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and all cruciferous vegetables. iii. Some Fruits and starchy plants: Sweet potatoes, cassava, peaches, strawberries, etc. iv. Nuts and seeds: Millet, pine nuts, peanuts. v. Added Sugars and White Sugars: The metabolism is slower, so these sugars will cause more weight gain than in a person without hypo. vi. Gluten: Though bread and cards are necessary, try to avoid as much gluten as possible as it can hinder the thyroid and metabolism. | DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

he essence of festivals is that it showcases the power of good over evil. The Dusserah Season reminds us about the strength of a womanas a mother. An everyday woman holds a beautiful bond inevery relationship she shares. But it is the role of a mother that showcases her strength and yet a softness of love and affection attached to it. A mother in today’s world just doesn’t remain a mother to her children. She is their friend, a companion who ensures they are protected from the evils of the world yet are brave enough to face the difficulties of the world. She balances multitude actives in a single day. Just like a computer where different windows are open, and each window has anongoingprocess. Similarly, a mother also manages a home, kids, the needs of the other family members, and sometime work. She needs to draw a fine balance between the many roles she plays.

Varun Dhawan, Katrina Kaif

R

To Unite For

emo D’souza is reuniting with his ABCD 2 hero, Varun Dhawan, for the third instalment in the franchise, in which the 31-year-old actor will be paired with Katrina Kaif for the first time. Now, Mirror has learnt that the film is scheduled to go on the floors in January in Punjab with Varun’s portions, before heading to London for an extended schedule, where the dance competition sequences will be shot. The film’s team is working on a completely new look for Varun’s character.

ABCD 3 earlier ABCD films, are set to join the leads this time around too. According to the source, plans are also afoot to convert the film into 4DX. The Bhushan Kumar and Lizelle D’souza production will hit theatres on November 8, 2019. “The film will be shot over two and half months and is expected to wrap up by March next year,” the source adds. ABCD 2, which had featured Varun opposite Shraddha Kapoor, had hit the marquee in 2015, while the first film released in 2013.

“The film has been titled ABC3D to highlight the 3D format of the film. Varun and Katrina, who play dancers in the film, are expected to begin training in multiple dance forms with Remo’s team shortly,” a source close to the development informs. It’s our duty to do different roles or else acting will become a 9 to 5 job, says Varun Dhawan

A

ctor Varun Dhawan brings to mind the word “dynamic” — box-office success, artistic excellence, trying so many different things in just the six years since his debut (Student of the Year, 2012)... he has got it all covered. As his most recent release, Sui Dhaaga – Made in India, keeps attracting both praise and cinema footfall, Varun says, “As actors, it’s our duty to do different roles, or else acting also becomes like a 9-to-5 job.” In a freewheeling chat, he talks about why he feels that it’s not a risk at his stage to experiment with roles, and the fact that audiences have evolved way more than anyone can think of. October was out of your comfort zone and now Sui Dhaaga is yet another path-breaking concept. What

184

drives you to be experimental? My fellow actors, I’d say. Seeing someone like Anushka (Sharma, his Sui Dhaaga co-star) becoming a producer at 25, doing films like NH10 (2015) and Pari, is commendable. When I started [my career], she had already done Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Band Baaja Baraat; she was climbing up and becoming this big superstar. When you experiment at the beginning of your career, that’s not experimenting, because you don’t have a choice — you have to do what comes to you. But when an already established top star suddenly does a [different] role and breaks the mould, that’s called taking a risk and experimenting. I’ve seen Anushka, Alia (Bhatt), Rajkummar (Rao) do this — that inspires me. I feel I need to change the game and do other things, it’s so cool.

| DFW | November 2018 | Vol 198

You recently said that you’d cut your fee if you believe in a film. Is money no longer a factor? I said if the film is of such a nature that you feel that it’s not going to reach out to a wide audience and I know that. But still, if I love the film, its subject and the makers, then I don’t care about the fee. Do you act for your fans or to satisfy your creative hunger? I’m mostly acting for the audiences. But when I do films like October and Badlapur, then that’s my little thing of artistically and creatively keeping myself alive. I believe I have to try something else and put myself in a difficult position to try and do a performance and then when the audience supports you, it’s crazy. And I am sure with Sui Dhaaga, all this discussion of doing this film or that film will end because as actors, we should actually be allowed to do whatever film we can. And it’s our duty to do different films or else acting also becomes like a 9-to-5 job that you can only do this or that. You promoted October while shooting for Sui Dhaaga, and promoted Sui Dhaaga while shooting for Kalank. Does it get exhausting? I am a workaholic. I’ve been told my family members and close friends that it’s unhealthy. You know I do think that this fear of getting burnt out also while doing these things. And I experience things like closer to the [film’s] release, I get vey less sleep. Even if I have time, I don’t sleep and my mind is constantly working. Surprisingly, I don’t get dark circles (laughs). I know it’s not the healthiest of lifestyles and I won’t tell people to follow it.

PERSON IN FOCUS YOHANN LOPEZ

O

ur Helping Hearts is a non-profit 501Š (3) organization dedicated to help the Homeless and hungry in the Dallas area. They have monthly events where kids and adults come volunteer to make sandwiches for various Homeless Shelters in Dallas.

to the community.

This is the brainchild of a young man, Yohann Lopez, who was just 8 years old when he started this initiative last year.

Hunger is a major issue in Dallas and its surrounding cities and its slowing growing. More than 500,000 people are affected and are food insecure. That is around 1 in 7 families.

It all started when he was visiting his grandparents and cousins in Mumbai, India last summer to celebrate his birthday and his family visited Mother Theresa’s Homeless Shelter. After seeing the poverty, his parents overheard him telling his cousin about how there are no homeless and hungry people in Texas. So once they got back, they decided to take him for a drive to south Dallas where he was shocked and heartbroken to see people on the streets, walking around asking for money and digging thru dumpsters looking for food. This impacted Yohann so much that he wanted to buy them all food and clothes, but it seemed impossible in that moment. For days after, he couldn’t stop thinking about the homeless and kept asking how he could help.

Lets get together and change these numbers, we all have the power to do it, this is such a simple way to give back to the community and to share the blessings that we have, one tiny step at a time.

Our Helping Hearts does monthly events which are open to the public and they also have private events for schools, churches, corporate offices and other organizations.

Please follow Our Helping Hearts on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/ourhelpingheart/ www.ourhelpinghearts.org

Finally, he came up with an idea. He planned to call his friends and gather themso that they could make sandwiches for the homeless. The first time they all got together, there were about 30 people and they made about 500 sandwiches. This then become a monthly event and at the latest event in August, they had more than 800 volunteers show up from different schools, girls/ boys scouts, basketball/soccer teams, and they all made about 17,000 sandwiches. Mayor Jeff Cheney of Frisco came to the event, praised and encouragedall kids for their good work and for the difference they are making

While you usually know where you’re going, your path up the mountain may not be all that clear as Saturn, your ruling planet, begins its 5 month retrograde cycle on the 8th. As the Lord of Karma backtracks in your partnership house, take a long hard look at the quality of your relationships, both personal and business and if they are pulling their weight. This is a great time to set boundaries and ask for what you want. And be prepared that your partners will be letting you know, in no uncertain terms, what they need from you. In your career, which is most important to you, you may be ready for a raise, a promotion, a new job or all three as Jupiter’s expansive energy traverses your 10th house. You’re ready to step up and assume greater responsibility and if you can’t do it in your current job, you may decide to look for a new one and a new and better job may find you because you deserve it. It’s time for magic in your career this month as the Scorpio planets travel in your 10th house.

This is the time every year when your interactions with others intensify, dear ram, as the Scorpio Sun travels in the part of your chart where you merge your energies with others on every level – psychologically, philosophically, intellectually, financially and sexually. What adds to this powerhouse energy this year is the cycle of Mars, your ruling planet also in intense, magical Scorpio after the 11th. It’s not easy being you, you say, dear crab? There’s no question that you’ve had to be more disciplined and responsible for your feelings and your emotional well-being. With Saturn, the planet of responsibility and discipline, in Cancer since June, 2017, you’ve had quite a lesson in self-parenting and self-nurturing – not to mention taking responsibility for EVERYTHING you feel without making it someone’s else’s fault. You know now, dear Moon child, that you’re just as capable of abandoning you as anyone else. With Saturn retrograding on the 8th, you’ll have one more opportunity to create those internal structures that truly support who you are now.

You’re having a ball now, aren’t you, oh lover of relationships, teamwork and cooperation, with Jupiter, the planet of growth and expansion, traveling in your sign until October, 2018.If you’re cashing in now, it’s because you deserve it.

Remember, a playpen is an appropriate, safe structure to protect a child, but that same playpen is confining and restrictive to an adult. Saturn’s message is that you have what it takes to be your own mommy and daddy.

Yes, everything you touch can turn to gold because you believe it. Of all the signs in the zodiac, you recognize the value and the gift in all relationships and now’s the time for you to reaffirm that every match is made in heaven.

You’re reaping what you’ve sown over the last 12 years as it appears that everyone is your raving fan. And with Venus, your guardian angel planet, in Libra until the 22nd when she flows into powerful Scorpio, people are coming out of the woodwork to support you in making your dreams come true.
