Wilmington State Parks is a series of urban parks

along the Brandywine Creek, including Rockford Park, Brandywine Park, Brandywine Zoo, Baynard Stadium and H. Fletcher Brown Park, and Alapocas Run State Park, which includes the Can-Do Playground and the Blue Ball Barn, featuring Delaware’s Contemporary Folk Art Collection.

January 5 – February 23 Lynn’s images capture Delaware’s variety of life and landscapes. She is a regular contributor to Delaware State Parks’ photo walk, and her students appreciate her willingness to teach. Free

Saturday, January 17 1 – 2 p.m. Photographer Lynn McDowell shares the techniques she used to create the photographs in her exhibit. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session. Free

Alapocas After Dark

Saturday, February 7 5:30 – 7 p.m. Find animals that only come out after the sun goes down. Use our night vision tools to help your search. This hike is on a combination of paved and unpaved paths with some hills. Pre-registration is required by noon, February 6. $4 per person/$10 per family of four

June 22 – 26 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ages 11 – 13 Campers will learn the basics, climb indoors at the Delaware Rock Gym, climb and hike at Alapocas Run State Park and canoe the Brandywine River. Climbing equipment is provided. $275 per camper

Rock and Rappel Climbing Camp

July 13 – 17 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ages 13 – 17 Campers will discover the basics of top rope climbing, learn belaying and rappelling, and hike at Alapocas Run State Park. Climbing equipment is provided. $325 per camper

Auburn Heights Preserve

A uburn Heights Preserve features a furnished mansion built in 1897, as well as the Marshall Steam Museum, with the largest collection of operating steam cars in the world. The automobile collection is owned and operated by the Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve.

Parking for programs is available in the field lot across Creek Road from the Auburn Heights Mansion. Parking for the Auburn Valley Trail is located off Benge Road. Auburn Heights Preserve 3000 Creek Road Box 36 Yorklyn, DE 19736 Phone: (302) 239-5687

Tours by Appointment

Tours are available by appointment for groups of eight or more on non-event days. For information or to schedule a tour, call (302) 239-5687. Tours must be scheduled at least one week prior to your tour date. $8 per person for either the mansion or museum tour $14 per person for both. If there is inclement weather on the day of a program, call (302) 239-5687 for an update. If severe weather forces state offices to be closed, programs will be canceled for that day.

Mansion Tours

Fridays, February 6 and March 6 Saturdays, January 17, February 21, March 21 Tours begin at 1 and 2 p.m. Tour the Queen Anne-style Auburn Heights Mansion, furnished by the Marshall family. Please note that there are steps to get into the mansion and one flight of stairs during the tour. Pre-register by 4 p.m. the Wednesday prior to tour date. Tours last about 45 minutes. $8 per person

Bird Walks

Saturday, March 14 9:30 a.m. Join an experienced bird watcher on our new trail to see some of the birds that live at Auburn Heights Preserve. This walk is for beginners to experienced birders. Wear comfortable shoes and meet in front of the Auburn Heights mansion. Free

We are always looking for new people to help out with collections maintenance in the mansion, working with the historic gardens, giving tours of the property and more. The Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve can teach you how to drive a steam car or operate a steam locomotive. Mechanics are always in high demand. Experience isn’t necessary, just enthusiasm!

DAY CAMPS AT BELLEVUE STATE PARK Summer Day Camp Open House

Thursday, January 22 5 – 7 p.m. Meet camp staff at the Bellevue Arts Center to learn about upcoming summer day camps, enjoy refreshments, ask questions and register campers before public registration begins.

Spring Break Day Camp

Monday, April 6 – Friday, April 10 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7 – 12 Each day will be filled with new discoveries, hiking and crafts. Campers should pack a bag lunch and snack. After care is available until 5:30 p.m. for $30. $175 for the week or $40 per day

Birds of Bellevue

First Friday of Each Month 8 a.m. Walk around the park and spot resident and migrant birds. Wear comfortable shoes; walks last about two hours. We have binoculars, or bring your own. No pre-registration. Free

Walk and History

First Wednesday Each Month (no walk in January) 9 a.m. Discover the history of the park while getting some exercise. Walk a different trail each week and learn about the park’s sites. $3 per person

Bellevue Hall Tour

Sunday, January 25 2 p.m. Hear how this home was transformed into a replica of Montpelier. Find a "secret" passageway and an underground tunnel. Register no later than 4 p.m. January 22. $8 per person Tours may be arranged for private groups.

Bird Seed Princesses

Saturday, February 7 1 p.m. All ages Help create bird seed princesses for our winter friends. We provide materials to make your own at home. Register by 4 p.m. February 6. $5 per person

An Introduction to the Night Sky Full Moon Hikes

Saturday, December 6 at 5 p.m. Sunday, January 4 at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 3 at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m. Take an hour-long hike to search for nocturnal animals. Pre-register by 4 p.m. on the business day before the walk and wear comfortable shoes. Meet at the park office parking lot. $4 per person

Murder Mystery at the Mansion

WINTER WORKSHOPS Craft Corner Presents: Earth Skills

This program allows adults to share their own nature-based and primitive technology arts. If you would like to volunteer to lead a future workshop, please contact Lisa Watt, Nature Center Manager, at (302) 655-5740. Pre-registration encouraged. Workshop I: Earth Art Saturday, December 20 1 p.m. Along with creating natural art from objects around us, we will learn the art of making our own butter. Bring your muscles and be ready to shake, shake, shake your way to homemade butter. Sunday, February 15 2 p.m. Enjoy a refreshing hike, and search for winter birds that frequent the preserve. Return to the Nature Center for a mid-afternoon snack around the fireplace. Pre-registration encouraged. $4 per person

FAMILY PROGRAMS Zoo Yoga: OM’ing Otters

Saturdays, January 24 and 31, February 7, 14 and 28 9 – 10 a.m. Ages 2 – 7 Come to the Education Building to challenge your body. Go upside down, play games, dance and take yoga adventures around the world. One parent or caregiver welcome per child. Extra adults or children pay registration fee. Adults with children ages 4 to 7 are not required to stay, but are welcome. Children under 4 must be accompanied by an adult. Zoo Kids: Toddlers and Pre-School

Zoo Camp Open House

Saturday, February 7 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Sign up for our popular spring and summer zoo camps on this day only, and receive a $5 discount for each special holiday camp or summer mini-camp, and a $10 discount for each week of full-day camp. Enjoy live animal presentations, meet Zoo staff and make a take-home Zoo camp craft. Takes place in the Education Building. Free

Friday, February 13 9 a.m. – Noon Teachers, K – Grade 8, join us for a teacher in-service learning how our STEM-based, Animal Behavior Science classes can be used to complement your curriculum. Learn how to conduct pre- and postvisit lessons, including walking your students through their data analysis. Take-home lesson plans for supplemental lessons include an exhibit design lesson, animal enrichment design lesson, and additional animal behavior studies you can conduct in your classroom. Learn the history of the U. S. Life-Saving Service, the precursor to the current day U. S. Coast Guard, by visiting the original Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum. Summer Camp Registration

Begins Monday, January 26 We offer a variety of fullday and half-day camps that explore the stream and trails and tap into your creativity. Camps range from 12 to 18 campers with a high staffto-camper ratio. Contact the park for a brochure after January 15.

Holiday Wreath Workshop at Judge Morris Estate

Saturday, December 6 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Join us for a cup of coffee in the cozy Judge Morris Estate during our wreath-making workshop. Bring clippers and gloves; fee includes greens, base and accents for one wreath $27 per person

Winter Trees at Chestnut Hill Farm for Girl Scouts

Sweetheart Hike

Brunch with Santa at Deerfield Golf Club

Sundays, November 30 and December 7, 14 and 21 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Children 12 and younger will meet Santa and receive a small gift. Everyone will enjoy the Sunday Brunch Buffet offering 111 feet of “brunchy goodness.” A buffet just for kids, and holiday music and décor are part of the fun. Reservations are required.
