By the Light of the Moon Hike

Friday, January 1, 2016 10 a.m. – Noon Blue Ball Barn Start the New Year outside on a two-hour recreational hike. Dress for the weather (layers of clothing, winter shoes, hats and gloves) and bring drinking water. After the hike, come back for some hot drinks. Pre-registration required by noon on Wednesday, December 30. In the case of inclement weather, call (302) 222-7436 on January 1 for cancellation information. Free

This Old Quilt

Sunday, January 31 1 – 3 p.m. Blue Ball Barn Learn about the care, cleaning, repair and storage of old and new quilts. Bring your quilts and Madge Ziegler, quilt specialist, will help identify the age and technique and fabrics used. Examples from Madge’s collection will be used to illustrate theories and controversies of collecting and repairs. Space is limited. Pre-registration required by noon on Thursday, January 28. Free

CALLING ALL GIRL SCOUTS! Winter Hike

Juniors and above January through February Blue Ball Barn Grab a group of your fellow Girl Scouts and learn what it takes to stay warm and safe while hiking in the cold and snow. Afterward, go on a hike through the park’s trails and enjoy some hot drinks back at the barn. To register your troop, call (302) 577-7020 or email DNREC_ WilmingtonProg@state.de.us. Program lasts two hours. $10 per person, one chaperone free for every eight scouts

Orienteering

Juniors and above January through March Blue Ball Barn Learn how to successfully navigate through the park using a map and compass, and a hand-held GPS unit. To register your troop, call (302) 577-7020 or email DNREC_WilmingtonProg@state.de.us. Program lasts four hours. $15 per person, one chaperone free for every eight scouts

Saturday, January 23 8 – 10 p.m. Blue Ball Barn Join the park naturalists for a hike from the Blue Ball Barn to the Rockford Tower guided by the light of the full moon. Climb the stairs of the Tower to enjoy the moonlight view and learn more about the night sky. The hike will be on a combination of paved and unpaved pathways. Preregistration is required by noon on January 20. $5 per person/$10 per family of four

Alapocas After Dark

Saturday, February 6 5:30 – 7 p.m. Blue Ball Barn Explore Alapocas Woods and look for the animals that only come out after the sun goes down. This hike will be on a combination of paved and unpaved paths with some hills. Pre-registration is required by noon on February 5. $5 per person/$10 per family of four

Verdant Music Series

Saturdays, January 9, March 5 Sunday, April 24 Blue Ball Barn 5 - 7 p.m. The Master Players Concert Series presents three innovative and intimate salon-type evenings. Campers will discover the basics of top rope climbing, learn belaying and rappelling, and take a trip to a new rock climbing location. Rock Climbing Nature Quest Camp

June 13 – 17 or June 27 – July 1 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Ages 8 – 10 Learn to climb, make some friends and have great nature adventures. Campers will learn the basics of rock climbing while completing an adventure quest in Alapocas Run State Park. Climbing equipment is provided. $275 per camper (after care, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., additional fee)

Monthly Bird Walks

Saturdays, December 26, January 30, February 27 8 a.m. Bring your eyes, ears and a comfortable pair of hiking boots. Our expert birder will lead the group and provide tips and advice to all interested bird watchers. No pre-registration required. Free

Bluebird Trail Spring Hike

Saturday, February 6 2 p.m. Learn about the park’s bluebird population and nesting research. Enjoy a lovely walk through the meadows, learn about birds and help prep for spring nesting season. If you are interested in helping us monitor in the summer, you can sign up after the program. Free

Tracks & Trees

PROGRAMS AT FLINT WOODS NATURE PRESERVE Flint Woods Nature Preserve is a satellite area of Brandywine Creek State Park. Limited to12 participants. Meet at the Nature Center.

Winter Workout

Saturday, January 9 1 p.m. Even though it’s chilly, we can still play outside and get some exercise. The hilly terrain at Flint Woods is perfect for walking off the winter blues. While we walk, we will learn about the history and importance of preserves. Pre-registration encouraged. $4 per person

Wonderful Winter!

Saturday, February 27 11 a.m. Explore Flint Woods in winter while hiking, looking for tracks, listening for birds and learning about the winter flora and fauna. Bring your family and friends for an opportunity to enjoy this special preserve. Enjoy a cup of warm cocoa after the hike. Pre-registration encouraged. $4 per person

Workshop II: Gourd Bowl Making Saturday, December 12 11a.m. Learn how to turn this native vegetable into a decorative container or functional bowl. Makes a great homemade gift for the holiday season. Material fee: $10

Workshop III: Natural Dyes

Saturday, January 30 11a.m. Learn the essence of natural dyes, and discover which plants natives used to dye their clothes. Bring a piece of material which you can dye and we provide the rest. Material fee: $8.

Summer Day Camp Workshop I: Holiday Registration Wreath-Making Workshop Begins Monday, February 8 Saturday, December 5 11 a.m. Make a natural wreath and adorn it with Nature’s bounty, then take it home to display it for the holiday season, or save it as a gift. We will have everything you need to make your wreath beautiful. Material fee: $20

Friday, December 4 5 – 7 p.m. Santa’s coming to town. Visit Santa and tell him what you want for the holidays this year, snap a photo, enjoy hot cocoa and yummy cookies, and listen to and sing fun holiday songs. Join us to make an ornament out of natural materials. $5 per child; $2 per ornament

Intro to Orienteering

Saturdays, January 16 and February 13 11a.m. Bring the family, scout troop, or a group of friends to the Nature Center to learn the basics of Orienteering. Then head out to try your new-found skills. Have even more fun when you and your friends compete. Pre-registration encouraged. $5 per person

Thursday, January 21 5-7 pm Join our camp staff at the Bellevue Arts Center for an Open House highlighting the upcoming summer day camps. Monday – Friday March 28-April 1 9 a.m. – 4 pm Ages 7 – 12 Spring awakening! Coming out of hibernation! Everything is awakening, and we will be able to witness spring at Bellevue. Each day will be filled with new discoveries, hiking and crafts. Campers should pack a bag lunch and snack each day. The registration fee for Spring Break Camp is $175 for the week or $40/day. After care is available until 5:30 p.m. for an additional fee of $30.

Walk and History

First Wednesday of each month through May 4 9 a.m. Discover the history of the park while walking the grounds for an hour. We will take a different path every week to learn the history of each particular site. May be cancelled due to inclement weather. $3 per person

Full Moon Hikes

Saturday, January 23 5 p.m. Monday, February 22 5:30 p.m. Take an hour-long hike under the full moon. Look and listen for nocturnal animals. Wear comfortable shoes as we will venture into the woods. Preregister by 4 p.m. on the last business day before the hike. Meet at the Park Office parking lot. $4 per person.

Wee Have Fun Club

Offered weekly on Wednesdays 10 a.m. Ages 3 – 5 Nature discoveries, stories and art projects are all part of the fun! Whenever possible, we will venture outside, so please dress accordingly. Bellevue Hall Tours

Tuesday, December 8 and Thursday, February 11 10 a.m. Sunday, January 24 2 p.m. Join us for a tour of the elegant Bellevue Hall, the former home of William DuPont, Jr. Hear how Mr. DuPont transformed the home from a gothic revival castle to a replica of Montpelier. Tours include a “secret” passageway to his billiards room, and an underground tunnel. Jingle Bell Hayride

Saturday, December 12 3 p.m. Enjoy a festive, old-fashioned hayride around the park followed by s’mores and hot cocoa at the warm and welcoming campfire. Register by 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 10. Meet at the Percheron Barn. Groups limited to 10 riders. $8 per person

Bellevue’s Winter Woods

Cauffiel House Tour

Sunday, February 21 2 p.m. Thursday, March 3 10 a.m. We will discuss the history of this lesser-known historical site within Bellevue State Park from before the Cauffiel House’s construction through its purchase by the Division of Parks and Recreation. A house tour will highlight measures taken to make this a beautiful place to live. Call to register by 4 p.m. on February 18 or March 1. Tours may be arranged by reservation for private groups. $6 per person

Murder at Bellevue Hall

Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5 7 p.m. The year is 1931. America is gripped by the Great Depression and Prohibition is still in full swing. Life is hard for many, but not for all. Here, at Bellevue Hall, one could be forgiven for thinking the Depression was already over. Ben Carrie-Deway, one of the nouveau riche, and owner of Bellevue Hall is well known for hosting lavish soirees, and this evening will be no exception, until our host is discovered deceased in his study. Everyone is suspect and it is up to you to solve the crime! Refreshments will be served. For 18 and older. $20 per person

Mondays through May 16 9 a.m. Start your week off right with our Monday morning walks. We’ll provide information and charts to track your progress. No pre-registration. May be cancelled due to inclement weather. Meet at the track.

Birds of Bellevue

First Friday of each month February through June 3 8 a.m. Walk around the park and spot resident and migrant birds. Wear comfortable shoes; walks last about two hours. We have binoculars, or bring your own. May be cancelled due to inclement weather. No preregistration.

An Introduction to the Night Sky

Saturday, December 19 4:30 p.m. Join members of the Delaware Astronomical Society for an evening of stargazing. Learn constellations and how to observe the night sky. For beginners through advanced stargazers of all ages. Equipment will be available, or you may bring your own. Red-filtered lights only. Preregistration is required no later than 4 p.m. on December 18. Meet in the Hunter Barn parking lot.

First Day Hike

Friday, January 1 1 p.m. Kick off the year and have some fun while getting exercise in a natural setting. We’ll pick a trail based on the group and walk for about an hour, visiting many special places throughout the park. This hike is for all ages and is stroller friendly. No pre-registration necessary. Meet at the Arts Center.

FORT MILES HISTORIC AREA PROGRAMS Fort Miles, located in what is now Cape Henlopen State Park, was a key part of the nation’s coastal defense during and after World War II. In September 2004, Fort Miles was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Fort Miles Historic Area will not be offering public programs for the winter.The Orientation Building will be closed during December - February.

Time Traveler Volunteer Training

Saturday, December 5 10 a.m. Become a “Time Traveler” and volunteer to assist the professional archaeologists and historians working in State Parks with research projects on our cultural heritage. Training at the Fort Miles Battery 519 will provide the background and basic skills needed. For ages 14 and older, but minors under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult. “Flippered” Sea Creatures of Delaware

Tuesday, December 29 Saturday, January 23 1 p.m. Dolphin or porpoise? Southern right whale or humpback? Do we see them in Delaware and how do we know what’s what? Get answers to these questions and many more! Then head out to the Indian River Inlet Bridge with binoculars to possibly spot one of these remarkable creatures. CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS Shipwrecks and Buried Treasure

Saturdays, December 12 and January 23 10 a.m. Learn about the heroic surfmen of the U.S. Life-Saving Service who responded to thousands of shipwrecks along the Atlantic seaboard. These ships carried a variety of cargo – some of which still washes up on the beach today! Learn how to use modernday geocaching techniques to locate “buried treasure.” Preregistration required. Little Beachcombers

Monday, December 28 10 a.m. Bring your little one to the beach to learn about various shells and the creatures that called them home. The program will end indoors where children will create their own sand sculpture with the shells they find on the beach. Pre-registration required. Recommended for ages 3 to 6. Signal Code Secret Messages

Tundra Swans in Flight Every winter, hundreds of Tundra Swans come to Trap Pond to rest from their breeding season in the Arctic. The swans overnight on the pond during January and February, leaving during the day to feed in local fields. Park visitors have a unique opportunity to see the flight of these birds in the early morning and evenings. Winter Waterfowl

Saturday, January 30 10 a.m. Take a walk along the pond and spot some of our wonderful waterfowl. Binoculars will be provided; all you need are warm clothes and comfortable walking shoes. Meet at the Nature Center. $4 per person

Animals of the Night Hike Saturday, February 6 6 p.m. Join us beside a campfire and learn about our nocturnal friends and Trap Pond. Afterward, take a short hike and experience these animals first hand. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight. $4 per person

Flower Power

Thursday, February 25 2 p.m. Get ready for spring planting by learning about the life-cycle of a seed and the process of germination. $4 per person

Bridge at Hopkins and Creek Road Replacement Alert Much needed improvements to the Nature Center Bridge are scheduled to occur from late December through early February. Programs scheduled for the Nature Center are subject to change during that time period. Early registration for all programs assures you of the most up to date information.

Summer Camp Registration

Begins Monday, January 25 We offer a variety of full-day and half-day camps that explore the stream, enjoy the trails and tap into that creativity! Camps are small and range from 12 to 18 campers with a high staff-to-camper ratio. Contact the park for a brochure after January 15.

First Day Hike

Friday, January 1 1 p.m. Start your New Year off right on this family hike led by members of the Friends of White Clay Creek State Park. We will also provide “Hike on Your Own” suggestions for the day for those who prefer smaller groups. Meet at the Carpenter Recreation Area, 880 New London Road. Free

Introduction to Fly Fishing and Fly Tying at the Judge Morris Estate

Tuesday, February 23: Fly Fishing Tuesday, March 1: Fly Tying 7 p.m. Bring any equipment you have and join Ed O’Donnell and Sam Palermo of the Friends of White Clay Creek State Park to learn the basics of fly fishing on day one and fly tying on day two. Preregister by the Friday before the program. Free

Full Moon Hot Chocolate Hikes

Sunday, January 24, 5 p.m. Monday, February 22, 6 p.m. Join us as the evening darkens the sky and cools the air. We will provide tasty hot chocolate to help keep you warm. Bring a travel mug with lid. Meet at the Nature Center. Call by noon on Friday and receive $1 discount per person. Pre-registration required. $6 per person

Snowflake Tea and House Tour Sunday, February 14 2 p.m. Join us for a lovely winter tea and tour of the Judge Morris Estate. Afternoon refreshments and tea will be served. $14 per person

EARTH EXPLORER ONE TIME WONDERS This popular addition to homeschooling offers innovative nature programs for children of all ages. A guardian must accompany each child 5 years and under 2 – 3:30 p.m. $6 per person

FAMILY PROGRAMS Zoo Yoga: OM’ing Otters

Sundays, December 6 and 20 9 – 10 a.m. For strong walkers – 7 years or older Get bendy, during our OM’ing Otters animal yoga class. Go upside down, play games, dance and take yoga adventures around the world! This class helps to strengthen kids’ growing muscles. One parent or caregiver welcome per child. Extra adults or children must pay registration. If a session includes a visit to the Zoo, fee includes zoo admission. $14 per child, $12 per Delaware Zoological Society (DZS) member child. Additional adults are $7 per person

Zoo Kids: Toddlers and Pre-School

Saturdays, December 5, January 9 and 23, and February 6 10:15 – 10:45 a.m. Ages 18 months – 6 years Learn through age-appropriate games, crafts, stories, activities, and live animal presentations. Toddlers, preschoolers, and their grown up can learn and play together! Different themes each week; held in the Education Building. Fee includes zoo admission. Siblings under 18 months are free. $12 per one adult and child; $6 per one adult and child DZS Additional children or adults are $7 per person

Pre-teens and Teens Join us for these special workshops geared toward teens and pre-teens interested in learning about or working with animals. $10 per student, $8 per student DZS

First Day Hike at the Zoo

Friday, January 1 10 – 10:30 a.m. Join us for a stroll through the zoo to learn about how we care for our resident animals during the winter. Program meets at the front gates. Free

Saturday, February 20 10:30 a.m. – Noon Wildlife rehabilitators help nurse injured or sick animals back to health with the ultimate goal of returning to the wild. During this program, locally and nationally acclaimed Tri State Bird Rescue and Rehabilitation staff discuss working with injured and oiled birds and wildlife. $10 per student, $8 per student DZS

Breakfast with Santa

Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13 9 – 10:30 a.m. This breakfast event is extra special because you’ll get to dine with Santa! A hot breakfast and buffet is provided by Janssen’s Market and Brew Ha Ha. Share your holiday wishes with Santa, bring your camera to take photos, make decorations and enjoy a few up-close animal encounters, all before the zoo opens. Finish the morning by strolling through the zoo at your leisure to watch our zoo keepers work and see the animals eating their breakfast! Space is very limited for this event, so please register early! All participants ages 18 months and up must pay program fee. $18 per adult, $15 per child; DZS members get 10% off

Noon Year’s Eve

Thursday, December 31 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Celebrate the New Year Zoo-style by ringing it in at NOON! We’ll have games, activities, and a celebratory atmosphere, and of course, a sparkling cider toast as the clock strikes 12 (noon that is)! Program takes place in the zoo, so dress for the weather. Zoo admission will be charged, starting at 10 a.m. $6 per person, $5 per person DZS


ZOO CAMPS MLK Day Camp

Monday, January 18 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Ages 5 to 13 (Drop-off 8:15 – 9 a.m., pickup 3:30 – 4 p.m., aftercare available until 5 p.m.) Biodiversity makes our world richer. Learn why every living thing has a special place and purpose on our earth and discover how to be a better animal ambassador. Campers must be toilet-trained, be dressed for the weather and bring a bag lunch and water bottle. Preregistration required by January 16. $45 per camper, $40 per camper DZS. Aftercare fee: $15 per person

SCOUT PROGRAMS Cub Scouts: Critter Care

Saturday, January 30 9:30 a.m. – Noon Caring for an animal is a big responsibility! Learn about different care requirements for both pet and zoo animals – you’ll even get to meet some up close. Program includes zoo tour and animal training demonstration. Program registration minimum is 10 and maximum is 30. Meets requirements for Bear Elective Adventure: Critter Care. Pre-registration required by January 28. $12 per participant includes Brandywine Zoo fun patch and zoo admission. Parents and chaperones must pay $5 zoo program and admission fee.

Zoo Camp Open House

Saturday, February 6 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The early bird gets the worm; be one of the first to sign up for our popular spring and summer zoo camps and receive a discount on this day only! Register for spring and summer camps and receive a $5 discount for each special holiday camp or summer minicamp and a $10 discount for each week of full day camp. Enjoy live animal presentations, meet zoo staff, and make and take a zoo camp craft. Open House takes place in the Education Building. Free

Winter Day Camp

We can show animals how much we care by properly caring for them. Program includes live animal encounters, zoo tour, and a take home craft. Program meets most requirements for the Daisies 3 Cheer for Animals Birdbath Award and the Brownies Pets badge. Pre-registration required by February 11. $12 per participant includes Brandywine Zoo fun patch and zoo admission. Parents and chaperones must pay $5 zoo program and admission fee.

Cub Scouts: Fur, Feathers and Ferns

Saturday, January 30 1 – 3:30 p.m. Take a hike through the zoo and Brandywine Park to explore native wildlife and plants. We’ll look for signs of animals, tour the zoo, and discuss why some animals are disappearing from their habitat in addition to ways to help them. Program registration minimum is 10 and maximum is 30. Program meets most requirements for Bear Adventure: Fur, Feathers, and Ferns. Pre-registration required by January 28. $12 per participant includes Brandywine Zoo fun patch and zoo admission. Parents and chaperones must pay $5 zoo program and admission fee.

Girl Scout Juniors: Earth’s Endangered

Sunday January, 31 9:30 a.m. - Noon We will discover how animals are adapted to thrive in their habitats, why they are in danger of disappearing, and what you can do to help them. Program includes live animal encounters, zoo tour, and fun badge-based activities. Program meets in the Education Building across from main zoo entrance. Program registration minimum is 10 and maximum is 30. Pre-registration required by January 29. Program meets most requirements for the Juniors Animal Habitats badge (Steps 1 through 4). $12 per participant includes Brandywine Zoo fun patch and zoo admission. Parents and chaperones must pay $5 zoo program and admission fee.

Cub Scouts: Nova WILD!

Saturday, February 27 9:30 a.m. – Noon (overflow session, 1 – 3:30 p.m., may be available) Cub Scouts of all ages will learn together in this program focusing on animal life cycles, wildlife and ecosystems. Scouts will learn about locally endangered animals and build skills observing zoo animals. Program registration minimum is 10 and maximum is 30. Pre-registration required by February 25. Program meets some requirements toward the Cub Scouts Nova WILD Award. $12 per participant includes Brandywine Zoo fun patch and zoo admission. Parents and chaperones must pay $5 zoo program and admission fee.
