New and Improved Campgrounds at the Seashore! What’s New and What’s in Store at Delaware State Park Campgrounds? See pages 24 and 25
From the Director: It is hard to quantify the value of Delaware State Parks. If I asked ten visitors, I would probably get ten different answers. Generally, the answers I have heard over the years can fall into these categories: quality of life, cultural, health, recreation and economic.
Quality of Life:
Delaware State Parks are here for all Delawareans to enjoy regardless of income or status. Many areas that are parks today, such as Bellevue, Brandywine Creek and parts of Cape Henlopen, were once restricted from the general public as part of a large estates or as a military installation. State Parks preserves some of the most scenic vistas such as the view from Rockford Tower or the view of the Atlantic coastline from Herring Point at Cape Henlopen. Parks protect vital habitat such as the baldcypress trees of Trap Pond or the mature forest at Alapocas, which is home to rare and threatened salamanders.
Cultural:
Many key historic sites that help us understand why Delaware is unique are part of Delaware’s State Park and nature preserve system. For example, many visitors don’t realize that every iconic World War II fire control tower often highlighted in travel magazines and road maps are in a Delaware State Park. Also park historians, interpreters and volunteers help bring to life the story of significant places such as Legislative Hall, Fort Delaware, Fort Miles and the Indian River Life-Saving Station. Delaware State Parks is steward to a variety of significant cultural resources including Native American sites, barns, monuments, churches and even multiple underground bunkers. This is not often a function that is considered when thinking about the work of state parks. But State Parks manages more properties on or eligible for the national historic register than any other entity in Delaware. Our parks are also a home for the arts with concerts and performances, camps for children and one of the largest art festivals on the east coast, the Brandywine Arts Festival.
Health:
Author Richard Louv states, “a growing body of research links our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health directly with our association with nature–in positive ways.” Personally speaking, I know after time spent surf fishing, hiking or camping, I always come back refreshed and feeling less stressed. A study by Nemours Health and Prevention Services demonstrated that Delaware children who are more physically fit are absent less from school and receive fewer suspensions during their academic careers compared to their less healthy cohorts.
Recreation:
Delaware State Parks supports a variety of life-long recreational opportunities including common activities such as hiking, horseback riding, golf, swimming, tennis and cycling, but also lesser known activities such as geocaching, cricket, disc golf and rock climbing. Our parks are home to 161 miles of trails, some very popular like the Gordon’s Pond trail and others more off the beaten path, such as the Thompson Island Nature Preserve trail.
Economic Impact:
Delaware’s tourism economy is the third largest private employer in the state. With more than five million visits annually, our State Parks play a pivotal role in helping to drive our tourism economy. A recent study of Pennsylvania State Parks showed that for every tax dollar invested, $12.41 of income returns to the state. I would guess if a similar study was done in Delaware our return on investment would be much higher due to the larger draw our parks have from nearby states. Also many small businesses depend on Delaware State Parks to drive patrons to use their services. Regardless of your reason for loving and visiting Delaware State Parks, I want to thank you for helping to support our stewardship efforts. We raise the 65% of our budget to operate these special places from the revenues we generate from annual passes, entrance fees and camping. So, on behalf of the entire Delaware State Parks family, thank you for your support! Raymond E. Bivens Director, Division of Parks and Recreation

Greetings from DNREC Secretary David Small The arrival of spring offers a time to ponder the renewal of our natural world and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation. Our state parks offer an incredible variety of experiences just waiting to be discovered. Thanks in part to our great business partners and our increasingly diverse amenities and programs, our parks have become destinations for a variety of activities – from a traditional Sunday afternoon picnic, to a round of golf at Garrison’s Lake or Deerfield, or paddling a kayak at Fenwick Island State Park. There are also beautiful, historic and unique sites such as Bellevue Hall and the Indian River Life-Saving Station for family events such as weddings and reunions. For us baby boomers, some of our fondest childhood memories include play, imagination and exploration in the outdoors. Without knowing, our families were building an understanding, appreciation and connection with the natural world. Today, many of our children don’t enjoy the same outdoor experiences as we did. It is essential for us to provide children with accessible, safe and enjoyable outdoor opportunities to educate and inform them of the state’s resources and build an appreciation of those resources. Under the Governor’s Children in Nature Initiative, we are reaching these goals in our state parks, providing activities for children and their families to play outdoors in safe, public green spaces, parks, streams, bays and the ocean. David S. Small Secretary, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Our statewide trail system also continues to grow. Since July 2012, more than 25 miles of trails have been built under the Governor’s First State Trails and Pathways Initiative – connecting neighborhoods, businesses, schools, parks and natural areas. This includes 9.3 miles of new parks trails. With more than five million visitors annually, our state parks help drive our tourism economy. Roads, water, sewer, electrical systems, campgrounds, bathhouses and piers all need maintenance and enhancements in order to keep these great spaces competitive with other destinations, and we look forward to making progress during the coming year on some key projects, including the completion of the renovations at Delaware Seashore State Park. A quiet moment of solace under a canopy of mature hardwoods, or the thrill of a zip line ride from the treetops, freshwater fishing at one of a dozen locations, the sights, sounds and action of our beaches, a night or two in one of our campgrounds, or a foot-tapping evening at a concert – all can be found in a state park near you. But regardless of your reason for loving and visiting Delaware State Parks, we thank you for your support. We’re saving a place for you!

than ever. The ten leading causes of death in our country are heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, stroke, accidents, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, nephritis, and intentional self-harm. Nine of these ten are health-related, and nearly all of them can be prevented if we change our lifestyles. In Delaware, eighteen of the top twenty causes of death are also preventable and health-related. How do we change this outcome? One of the best ways is to adopt a healthier lifestyle, especially one that includes the outdoors. A growing body of research has produced conclusive results – adopting outdoor recreation as a hobby has multiple benefits mentally, socially and physically. Moreover, the definition of health is expanding, and now includes a balance of physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual and social health, which can range from fitness, nutrition and stress management to meditation, education, and relationships. In a national poll conducted by Gallup Analytics in 2013, Delawareans were least likely to exercise frequently, with only 46.5% of residents reporting exercising three or more days per week for at least thirty minutes per day. This is the worst percentage in the entire country. We need to change it. Spending time outdoors makes us healthier and happier. Our vitamin D levels increase, we get more exercise (this is especially true for children), we improve our concentration, and time outdoors can help us recover from injury or surgery faster. It reduces stress, which reduces violence and aggression, as well as an individual’s risk for developing other diseases. By simply walking just three hours per week or thirty minutes per day, the list of health benefits is staggering: manage weight, control blood pressure, decrease risk of heart attack, lower risk of stroke, reduce risk of breast cancer and Type 2 diabetes, prevent depression and colon cancer, lengthen life span, lower stress levels, improve sleep and elevate mood. Of these, seven are leading causes of death, and the chance of developing them are significantly lowered simply by adding walking to your daily or weekly routine.

Enjoy Exercise More While Donating to Charity with Plus3 O ur country is in a health crisis. We don’t realize it, but all of our stressinducing, unhealthy eating and sedentary habits are affecting us more quickly

How do we adopt changes like these? Healthier Sussex has recently implemented the Plus3 Network. It not only makes exercise enjoyable, but also gives money to charitable causes by allowing users to log their exercise hours to earn kudos, which turn into money for charities. John Hollis, a Nemours Health and Prevention Services and Healthier Sussex representative who brought the program to Delaware, uses it himself, earning kudos and having friendly competitions to motivate him and his peers to work harder. He says, “Altruism is a driving force within humans, it is in our nature. Plus3 has shown it works by using this method.” In addition, Delaware State Parks offers more than fifty trails and encourages year-round use. We offer guided hikes for those who want to learn while improving their lifestyle, activities like the Trail Challenge that offer prizes for walking specific trails, and others. The Children in Nature Coalition partners encourage Delawareans to join Plus3, log the hours earned in the parks, and enlist family and friends to build competition and motivation, all while raising money for charity and improving wellbeing and overall health. To do so, sign up on http://plus3network.com.

Making Parks Accessible
D
elaware State Parks’ intention is to provide people of all ages and abilities as many opportunities as possible to access and enjoy all the parks throughout the state! Over the years, improvements have been made to help enhance the recreational experiences for all park visitors. The following identify improvements for use and access to our beaches, campgrounds, trails and playgrounds:
Beach:
Accessibility modifications to Delaware Seashore and Fenwick Island State Parks enable persons with disabilities to gain access to the beaches. Mobi-Mats create an inclusive environment for pedestrians and strollers, bicycles and golf carts — in other words, by everyone! In addition, beach wheelchairs, equipped with large, wide hard plastic wheels, can roll across the sand without sinking and afford people with disabilities closer access to the Atlantic Ocean and an enhanced recreational experience.
Campgrounds, Cottages and Cabins:
Delaware Seashore State Park features accessible cottages at the Indian River Inlet. Accessible bathhouse facilities at the campgrounds on both the north and south side of the Indian River Inlet are under construction, and existing bathhouse facilities are being refurbished. Accessible camping cabins are available at Cape Henlopen State Park, and accessible bathhouse facilities will be installed at the campground.
Trails:
Cape Henlopen State Park’s recent trail connection provides park users at Herring Point the opportunity to access Gordons Pond by an elevated 1½-mile trail and boardwalk, allowing visitors a rare and exciting opportunity to experience the unique features of Gordons Pond.
Playgrounds:
The Alapocas Run State Park Can-Do Playground offers a fully-accessible playground for children of all ages and abilities. Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore State Parks playgrounds also have accessible features that provide opportunities for children of all abilities and ages. Delaware State Parks continues to incorporate accessibility in all construction planning, in order to provide all visitors quality recreational and cultural opportunities.

Peak Summer
Spring 2015 Sees Campground Improvements Throughout the State Delaware Seashore State Park Campground: After more than a decade in the making, we are proud to open both of our newlyrenovated campgrounds at the Indian River Inlet. Our south inlet campground has 145 RV hookups, 6 fullservice hookups, 41 tent sites, 94 campsites, renovated bathhouses and a beautiful promenade overlooking the inlet. On the north side of the inlet, our brand new campground has 80 fullhookup RV sites with beautiful bathhouses, pavilions, playground, trail and promenade. Our campgrounds and beach access are now all connected by a new, ADA-accessible sidewalk system. Once you arrive and settle in at the park, you’ll have full access to all of the amenities – beach, playgrounds, campsites, cottages, restaurant and marina – without having to get back in your vehicle!
Cape Henlopen State Park Campground:
To make a great camping experience at Cape Henlopen even better, this summer we will open two brand-new state-of-the-art bathhouses to complement our existing bathhouse. Later in the season, the existing bathhouse will be renovated as an updated laundry facility, with wash basins and charging stations. Over the last few years, our park users have enjoyed the addition of the cottages to the campground. Our goal is to add to these cottages, providing additional facilities for our visitors to enjoy. In response to the many requests for electricity at the campsites, we are in the planning stages to add electric at some of the campsites as well. Enjoy!
Lums Pond State Park Campground:
At the end of the 2015 season, we will update our existing 68-site campground into full-service sites with water, sewer and electric hookup. Previous pad sites will be installed at each campsite to control runoff and give year-round access to the campground in any kind of weather. In addition, improvements to the sewage treatment plant will upgrade the facility. Our existing bathhouse will be evaluated and renovated along with possible hookup opportunities for future cabins or cottages overlooking beautiful Lums Pond. Once the project is completed, Lums Pond will be a year-round destination just minutes off the I-95 corridor, perfect for a weekend or tailgating getaway, and the official campground home for University of Delaware athletics.
