Greetings from DNREC Secretary David Small
T
he people behind the great places and programs who make Delaware State Parks special are a creative, energetic and entrepreneurial crew. Visitors see the faces of our staff behind the sunglasses of a lifeguard, under a ranger’s hat or in the smile of an interpreter offering fun tidbits about native plants or animals. There are, as you might imagine, many others who work tirelessly in less visible roles to make your visit to our parks safe, fun and educational, such as architects who design our buildings, roads and trails, and accountants who manage our finances. I have had the honor and pleasure of working with this team throughout my career at DNREC. It has been incredibly rewarding to be a part of one of the best park systems in the country. That’s my view from the inside. However, there is another perspective that I share with you and millions of other folks who visit our parks annually – that of customer and user. Delaware’s park system has been part of my life since the first days I came to Delaware 35 years ago. My daughter learned to ride a bike on the trails of Cape Henlopen and had one of her first close encounters with wildlife when she found a fawn bedded down among the pines just a few feet from the trail. She’s never forgotten it. Both of our children attended summer camp at Killens Pond. We camped and canoed at Trap Pond, fished from Beach Plum Island, hiked among the tulip poplars at Brandywine Creek State Park and honed our skills playing disc golf. These days the cottages at Delaware Seashore State Park seem more comfortable than a tent and sleeping bag, and the trails at White Clay Creek State Park are a draw for my mountain biking son. The simple truth is that these experiences have enriched our lives. As you peruse this great summer guide to our State Parks, I know you will find something appealing to you and your family. Whether it’s the natural features of these spaces, the great amenities and diverse programs, or all of the above, let Parks be part of your world this summer. Come on in, we’re saving a place for you.

Beer & Benevolence Supports Summer Concert Series
D
elaware State Parks is very pleased to announce the establishment of an endowment fund with the Delaware Community Foundation to benefit the statewide Summer Concert Series held at Wilmington, Bellevue, White Clay, Killens Pond, Trap Pond and Delaware Seashore State Parks. The generous $15,000 contribution to establish the fund was made through the Beer & Benevolence program of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery with the sole purpose of supporting the concert series. Beer & Benevolence is the philanthropic branch of Dogfish Head that endeavors to creatively collaborate with non-profit organizations to foster community, nourish artistic advancement and cultivate environmental stewardship. Other significant fund raising efforts include the Dogfish Dash that raised $75,000 for The Nature Conservancy, Delaware Chapter. Since 2007, the Dash has generated more than $275,000 for TNC, DE Chapter. The Dogfish “Benevolence Day” is an annual day of service during which plant operations are shut down and employees give back to the community. This year, 175 brewery, brewpub, and inn co-workers dedicated a day to help build homes in Sussex County. The company also contributed a $25 donation per co-worker to Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. Combined with a “Benevolence Night” at their pub the company’s efforts equaled a $5000 contribution to this great cause. The day of service provided 1400 volunteer hours.

Delaware State Parks Cultural Heritage Program A lthough the Delaware State Parks Cultural Heritage Program is small in number of staff, our mission is a mighty one. We are tasked with both protecting the historic and cultural resources found in our parks for future generations and with making them available to the public for their use and enjoyment. We try to manage that balancing act through the various facets of our program – archeology, historic preservation, collections and interpretation.
We are a very small group of people with backgrounds in history, archeology, historic preservation, folklife and museum collections, working among the more typical engineers, biologists, public planners, trades specialists, and others you would expect to find in a natural resource-based organization such as ours.
Scout Programs at Auburn Heights Preserve
Auburn Heights is a great place to bring your scouts for a private program to work on specific badge requirements. Call us at (302) 239-5687 to learn more.

Jim Hall
Our archeology program not only tries to locate and identify important historic and prehistoric sites on DNREC properties, but also reviews proposed projects and activities on these lands that might negatively impact those sites.
The Delaware State Park system also has more than 220 historic structures on our properties, including forts, farm houses, churches, statues and monuments, chicken coops, stone walls, mansions, an old Coast Guard station, cemeteries, and barns galore! We advise on the proper maintenance, use and interpretation of these structures so that they can be enjoyed for many more generations.
George Contant
These buildings and structures are our largest artifacts, but we have groups of smaller objects that we have collected to help tell the story of our lands and the people who lived and worked here in times past. We are documenting and slowly digitizing these items, ranging from cannon balls to muskrat traps, bath robes to milk bottles, so that in addition to using them for traditional on-site displays, we can eventually exhibit them “virtually” in an online museum. As our agency continues to move ahead in building new facilities and trails to meet current recreational needs, I ask that you take a few minutes to consider the legacy left to us by previous generations. The core of that legacy is still those natural and cultural resources that were set aside for protection as Delaware State Parks, and the need for that protection is stronger than ever today. Join us in celebrating our history by attending one of the cultural or historic programs we’re featuring this year as several parks celebrate anniversaries – we’re saving a place for you! — Jim Hall, Chief of Cultural Resources

he Societa’ da Vinci is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the promotion and support of the rich cultural heritage of the Italian people through education, service, charity and community events. This year’s Vendemmia will be held at the stately Bellevue Hall on Sunday, October 11 from 2 to 6 p.m. For more information, including ticket pricing, contact Ron Oronzio at rrlosr@aol.com or call (302) 438-2447. Getting your favorite campsite in the summer can be a challenge. Reserving that same campsite in the fall is much easier, with far more sites available. You could even decide to visit with just a few days’ notice with our easy-to-use central reservation system. After Labor Day, camping rates are reduced for the fall, winter and spring. Look for additional fall camping discounts in the near future.
The Scenery
The foliage is beautiful during the fall, which makes it a great time to camp.
The Weather
The crisp fall weather is perfect for camping, whether you enjoy an early morning walk, coffee or hot chocolate by the campfire or a hearty home-cooked breakfast, watching the sun set or star gazing. Tent camping in the summer heat can be challenging. Sleeping can be far more comfortable on cool fall nights when you pack your favorite fall clothes and gear.
Fewer Bugs
The fall temperatures generally mean fewer bugs than during the warmer seasons. It is really nice to eat meals and sit around the camp fire at night without having to deal with those pesky mosquitos!
Campfires
Nothing beats a crisp fall night for sitting around a campfire with family and friends. Our camp stores all sell firewood to make it easy for you to enjoy this timehonored tradition. Roasting marshmallows is another great camping activity.

The Killens Pond Nature Center has won a variety of national awards for its exhibits and design. It highlights the reptiles and amphibians of Delaware, and exhibits include a live copperhead snake, Delaware’s only venomous snake.
For the past two years, the park has offered a special event called Puppies in the Pool. In September, right before the Water Park closes for the season, dog owners are allowed to bring their pets and let them swim in the pool.

he Trap Pond Partners are a non-profit organization whose mission is to support Trap Pond State Park. The group is dedicated to promoting the preservation, protection and enhancement of the natural resources in the park. Often, they do this by assisting park staff with the implementation of environmental improvements. The Partners recently pursued and were awarded the Urban and Community Forestry Partnership Tree Planting Grant given by the Delaware Forest Service. With the grant funding, the Trap Pond Partners are able to replace vital tree canopy that has been lost from disease, animal stress, age and environmental impacts such as weather. The seedlings will be planted in the park’s campground and along Wooten Road near Bethesda Church. The trees will enhance air quality and improve the aesthetics of the sites where they are planted, and help maintain water quality by moderating soil erosion. Ninety-six trees ranging from 1 ¼ to 2 inches in diameter and from 3 to 7 feet tall will be added to the park’s grounds. There will be a variety of native species planted, including alba white oak, mockernut hickory, short leaf pine, baldcypress, tulip poplar and hackberry. In addition to the trees, the grant funds allow for the purchase of mulch and trunk protection equipment for the new plantings. This tree grant has enabled Trap Pond State Park staff and Trap Pond Partners to develop and maintain quality tree cover in the park and to cultivate an appreciation of the park as a great natural resource for all ages.

Return of the Time Travelers
D
elaware State Parks Cultural Resources staff is excited to announce the re-launch of its Time Travelers program, in close cooperation with the Archaeological Society of Delaware (ASD). Time Travelers are members of the public who volunteer their time to assist the professional archaeologists and historians who work in our state parks on research projects to protect and study our cultural heritage. The program also includes many new events, some with hands-on activities, presenting aspects of the history of our parks and the people who lived on these lands over thousands of years. Recently five members of the ASD assisted in archaeological testing in advance of the construction project at a Delaware Fish and Wildlife property. The team encountered intact remains that were more than 1500 years old, including pottery of a type called Wolf Neck indicating the importance of Broad Creek to native peoples. The volunteer program is open to anyone over the age of 14 (must have accompanying adult if under 16 years). Those without prior experience will take part in a training session, John McCarthy to be scheduled later this year. The first step is to visit the State Parks Volunteer webpage at destateparks.com/ volunteers/to-apply.asp to fill out a volunteer application. Those who complete the training will receive a year’s free membership in the ASD.
