LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Manager of Cabo Wabo and a Cabo icon, who by the way, is also a fantastic cook! Most of the recipes on Cabo Wabo’s menu are his creations. We are delighted to share the article and video interview with you. Jorge is an inspiration for generations to come!

Southern Baja is rich in delicious regional secrets like the Almeja Tatemada ritual of Loreto, which is only practiced in that region. Our local produce and cuisine are sources of great pride, which, surprisingly, is one of the main reasons many agree that Italian food tastes so good in Los Cabos. Read all about innovative Italian recipes in Cristina Galullo’s article “Why Is Italian Food So Good In Cabo?”

Dear readers,

There are many reasons why millions of tourists visited Southern Baja last year: adventure, relaxation, golf, fishing, and more. Whatever the motivation, we can all agree that we enjoy eating good food. Los Cabos is quickly becoming a premier destination for foodies around the world. Tourists come from all over to explore the local cuisine. According to FITURCA, the Tourism Escrow of Los Cabos, 13% of visitors came to Los Cabos during 2021 exclusively for its excellent gastronomic variety. The restaurant industry has shown remarkable resilience in the face of a post-pandemic world. Our destination offers food lovers the best of all worlds, from innovative recipes to groundbreaking culinary experiences and traditional Mexican dishes with the freshest and finest locally sourced ingredients.

Throughout the years, we have been proud to share with you the stories that have made this destination so unique. For this issue, we were honored to meet with the legendary Jorge Viaña, General

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking.

CABO SAN LUCAS THE CORRIDOR EAST CAPE LORETO LA PAZ

SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza).

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses.

todos santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf.

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles.

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist-high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

The spectacular national marine preserve of the Loreto Bay includes five breathtaking islands and marine life is greatly abundant. For those who are partial to adventures on land, there is plenty of hiking and biking, making Loreto the ultimate eco-tourism destination.

PLAYA CHILENO

This is a great beach for swimming due to its calm waters, and its beautiful reefs that offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach.

Location: Follow the signs for PLAYA EL CHILENO near Km. 14 of HWY 1.

Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear and shade!

PLAYA VIUDAS

Near Cabo San Lucas lies this place of peace and beauty, walking across the shore you’ll find rock formations that create a espectacle as the waves break on them. Even if this makes for a less than ideal place to swim, it creates an atmosphere of magic and relaxation that makes you want to stay the whole day.

Location: Playa Las Viudas is located at km 11.5 along the Tourist Corridor and is accessed by a dirt road that continues for just under a half-mile toward the ocean.

Tips: Las Viudas is a small beach and doesn't have many amenities so make sure to arrive early and prepare everything you may need.

PLAYA BALANDRA

Balandra Beach is a stunning bay in La Paz that will take your breath away. The white powder-like sand and shallow water create dreamy turquoise colors that delight the eye as far as you can see. It is a kayaker's paradise; not only can you cruise to the reefs across the bay for an unforgettable snorkeling experience, but you can also explore the mangroves on the left side of the bay. The water is very shallow in most of the bay, so you can also simply walk around and explore by foot.

Location: About two hours from Cabo San Lucas. We recommend entering it into your phone or car's GPS for directions.

Tips: Try to shuffle your feet in the sand while in the water because many stingrays call this bay their home (lucky guys!) and the shuffling sends them away.

PLAYA MÉDANO

This swimmable and family friendly beach has numerous activities and water sports available, such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand-up paddling, and more. The stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.

Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas.

Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “no gracias.”

PLAYA DEL AMOR

Known to visitors as Lover's Beach, this beautiful staple of Cabo San Lucas is only reachable by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or from Medano Beach. On the other side of the rocks you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean where it’s very dangerous to swim.

Location: Land’s End beside the famous Cabo San Lucas arch.

Tips: You won’t find any services. Walk along the Marina or Medano Beach to find a water taxi.

PLAYA Santa Maria

Santa Maria Beach is a stunning horseshoe cove with unique coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Arrive early to beat the tour boats if you're planning on Snorkeling. Palapas are available for some much needed shade, so arrive early in order to get one before they are all taken.

Location: Follow the signs which read PLAYA SANTA MARIA and exit at Km. 13 of HWY 1. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area.

Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right or left side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience. Bring snorkeling gear!

PLAYA CERRITOS

Switch it up by exploring the Pacific Ocean side of Los Cabos. Cerritos Beach is usually a few degrees cooler than the Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo beaches, the sand is finer and darker in color, and it might remind you of a Southern California beach. It's a popular surf spot and you can rent a boogie board or surf board and even take a surf lesson as there are a few surf schools on the beach.

Location: Head north for about 45 minutes on HWY 19 from Cabo San Lucas towards Todos Santos and exit at km. 66. Watch the markers and look for the signs.

Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be powerful, so please swim with caution. Visit the charming town of Todos Santos before or after your Cerritos beach day.

ChecklistEdition

playa viudas

PLAYA PALMILLA

Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and mile-long stretch of beach. You will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the exclusive One&Only Hotel. You won't find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. The beach area on the left is roped off with buoys for safe swimming, and the area on the right has tide pools and rocks that you can explore.

Location: Take the PALMILLA ramp exit at km. 27 and turn into the residential community (towards the ocean). You will wind down until you arrive to the beach entrance located on the left side, in front of the Del Mar community gate. If you reach the One&Only Hotel you have gone too far.

Tips: Palmilla Beach is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa.

As a tourist, when you arrive to Los Cabos you will most likely be bombarded by advertising: where to eat the best seafood, where to drink the best margaritas or where to find the best tacos. Oftentimes, these places are tourist-traps. What is the most obvious clue that a restaurant serves authentic Mexican food? You’ll find locals eating there! We’ve created this Taco Guide to help you in your quest to find your favorite authentic tacos.

but... what is a Taco?

TA CO /täko/ noun, plural tacos

a mexican dish consisting of a fried tortilla, typically folded, filled with various mixtures, such as seasoned meat, beans, lettuce, and tomatoes.

First Things First. Let’s Talk Tortillas

Usually, you’ll have two options: corn or flour tortillas. It’s important to mention that crunchy taco shells are not Mexican, so you won’t find them in restaurants here. You’ve probably tried corn tortillas since they are more popular nation-wide. However, the Baja Style flour tortillas are a real treat. We suggest trying both types of tortillas in order to find out which team you’re on!

Types of Tacos

You should know there are around 60 types of tacos in all of Mexico, and popularity varies by state. It all comes down to the filling. There are many different types of fillings with many options of protein. Some even have insects in them! However, the most popular choices are pork, beef, lamb, and seafood (typically fish or shrimp). Baja Style tacos are a must during your visit! These are made with battered fish or shrimp and served in flour or corn tortillas. Each taco joint has its specialty. The best way to find your favorite is by asking the server which are the most popular ones and trying them out!

Salsas and Toppings, Oh My!

Which salsa you choose will make or break your taco. It’s important you ask which ones are the spiciest and know your own limits; they can be very spicy! The most traditional salsas are guacamole and pico de gallo, along with a red and a green salsa. Ask which one is spicier because it varies from place to place. A bit of advice when choosing a salsa- start small, then add more after tasting your food.

Why Is Italian Food So Good In Cabo?

Golfing, whale watching, and sport fishing- as well as drinking and partyinghave long been the main pastimes while vacationing in Los Cabos. In recent years, though, our region has become a favorite destination for foodies who seek to indulge in a wide range of culinary delights. The eclectic Mexican gastronomy is, of course, the cream of the crop. When in Mexico, eat as Mexicans do, right? However, we dare say that no visitor should leave Cabo without having had at least one Italian dinner.

Everybody likes Italian food! It's not a cliché. It actually ranked number one on the global list of the best cuisines of the Food Atlas Award for 2022. Believe it or not, Italian food is especially good in Cabo! Why is that? Could it be because the chefs strictly adhere to Grandma's traditional recipes? Or is it because they import original ingredients from the homeland to guarantee that proverbial authenticity? Surprisingly enough, the chefs we met are drifting away from “made in Italy” and embracing the “made here” mentality, in line with the locavore (local + vore as in carnivore) philosophy that is spreading everywhere among people driven by ethical and health reasons.

For Emanuele Olivero, chef at the restaurant Riccio di Mare at Solaz Resort, the only products imported from Italy are those labeled DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) that protect regionally produced food such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Gorgonzola cheese, Prosciutto di Parma and Mascarpone, which is a must in Tiramisù, from imitation. All other ingredients are gathered from what this land and its sea have to offer. And with a traditional Italian recipe in mind, Olivero envisions a new dish, enriched by fresh, regional ingredients. It just so happens that epazote, a plant native to Central America with a pungent taste, is used instead of some Italian aromatic herbs that are strong in flavor. Whether fresh or dried, it is a

condiment that adds a twist to some classic Italian dishes, like green frittata (veggie omelet) and especially in the filling of handmade pasta like ravioli. Another important ingredient in the filling is grated cheese, usually parmesan or pecorino. But at our latitude, cotija cheese works pretty well in some pasta dishes. Even nopales, which are not even close to being a traditional Italian ingredient, have found a place on the chef's menu, as he has used the prickly pear leaves in place of green beans in one of his creations.

“It is not possible to recreate the exact taste of a dish when you are not using endemic ingredients”, Olivero states. “That dish is so flavorsome in its place of origin because it was made from fresh ingredients that grew there. Here, instead, my aim is to provide my customers with a memorable culinary experience with fresh and genuine products from the place where we live”. Even the coffee, which for Italians is more a cultural trait than a tradition, is roasted in Todos Santos. Similarly, Giulio Lupori, chef at The Villa Group, agrees that the concept of authenticity of Italian cuisine is shifting towards honesty when cooking abroad. “Authenticity is the essence of the dish and it lies more in the technique than the ingredients” he says. “For example, the secret of a great pizza is in the wood oven and the dough, not the toppings”. According to him, the technical details in the production process ensure the authenticity everyone longs for. What lends flavor to a pizza is the texture of the dough that is obtained by using a natural yeast starter. The acidity in the sourdough starters not only gives the right consistency to the bread, but also enriches its taste. When it comes to the sauce, some pizza makers may opt for original Italian canned tomatoes

preserved and imported from The Boot, while others prefer to prepare the sauce with fresh Saladette tomatoes, grown and ripened beneath the sun of Todos Santos. Then, everyone can “play” with the toppings. Lupori tells us about how he has used aguacate in dishes that cover a full meal. Avocado is not typically present in traditional Italian cookbooks, but in this region the “Alligator pear” claims the right to be part of a mixed salad, either diced or mashed in a dressing. Cut in half and grilled or broiled was a creative proposal to garnish a Fiorentina Steak. And guess what?

The ubiquitous green butter fruit helps make a very special chocolate mousse for dessert.

These chefs’ passion for the “made here” mentality has driven them to experiment with local raw materials in a do-it-yourself production of Italian style cold cuts, like guanciale (cured pork cheek), goose breast bresaola, and lamb prosciutto. Olivero still makes homemade mozzarella cheese! Perhaps Italian chefs are not as

patriotic as we thought. They stick to tradition to ensure the authenticity of the dish but become flexible in order to avoid using processed, canned, or frozen ingredients. They buy fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and seafood from local growers, which forces them to get creative with their recipes.

The perfect example of the convergence of the two cultures is a mango or pitaya flavored gelato (Italian style ice cream). It fits our summer temperatures so well! Can you think about anything more local and seasonal than the pitaya fruit?

These gastro experts not only create a dining experience focused on freshness, local tastes, and seasonal produce, but also contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and helping the economy of their own community. Once again, when it is about doing the right thing, nature leads the way.

PUERTO NUEVO MEETS ANIMALON BY THE SEA: A SUNSET TO REMEMBER!

mong the culinary wonders Baja has to offer is the lobster prepared Puerto Nuevo Style. The town of Puerto Nuevo, Rosarito, is a sea side village in Baja California where chef Susana Plascencia and her family have owned the historic Puerto Nuevo I and II restaurants for decades. The recipe that has been passed down from generation consists in lobster pan-fried in lard and accompanied by rice, refried beans and the famous Sonora style flour tortillas.

Another highlight of Baja’s cuisine is chef Javier Plascencia’s kitchen. Surprisingly, although he shares the same last name as the family that runs the famous Puerto Nuevo Restaurants, they are not related. However, talent and tradition recognize each other. This led to an unforgettable collaboration between chef Susana Plascencia, her son Alan Bautista and chef Javier Plascencia, aboard the Animalon by The Sea. This dinner party, hosted for close friends and family, was one for the books!

Guests were welcomed at Javier’s floating restaurant with a refreshing drink as the hustle and bustle in the kitchen promised

a spectacular meal. Watching the sky turn from blue to pink to orange until the stars peeked out was spectacle in itself, pairing it with such a remarkable culinary experience made it a sunset to remember. With the famous Arch and a full moon as witness, dinner was served. The traditional sides, huge flour tortillas, beans and rice adorned the plates as the pièce de resistance made its way to the tables. It was time to eat lobster! This particular way of eating lobster is far from glamourous, as chef Susana Plascencia taught the Destino team how to yank it from its shell using her hands and a fork. This collaboration goes to show all the wonderful dishes, recipes and chefs Baja has to offer the world!

Check out our experience!

THE STORY OF THE LEGENDARY JORGE VIAÑA

This story begins with Keith Richards and Jorge Viaña passing a bottle of tequila back and forth while sitting on the curb at the only gas station in Cabo San Lucas. The year was 1983, and there were cattle on the dirt roads. Jorge worked two jobs: receptionist by day at the Twin Dolphin Hotel and as a waiter at Alfonso’s, a restaurant on Medano Beach, by night. Although Cabo was a small and quiet town, the air buzzed with the feeling of endless possibilities. It was a blank canvas and Jorge, unknowingly, was holding a paintbrush.

How does one find themselves having a drink with one of the biggest rock stars in the world? It seems as though serendipity follows Jorge wherever he goes, with his iconic black hair and the top British rock bands as the soundtrack to his life. He was a man in his late twenties dreaming of opening his own bar. Any other person could have bumped into Keith Richards. Perhaps they would have asked for an autograph or a picture and bragged about it to friends. However, Jorge’s encounter with the Rolling Stones’ lead guitarist turned into an opportunity, and the next day, he was helping organize Keith’s bachelor party.

Before Jorge knew it, he was arranging to have the only piano in town brought to Alfonso’s for the festivities. It’s hard to imagine what Medano Beach looked like back in the eighties, before all the restaurants, booty shaking contests, and vendors. It's even harder to imagine Mick Jagger arriving at his bandmate’s bachelor bash. His toes in our sand. He and Keith performing at what was surely one heck of a party. But this is only one of many, many surreal moments in Jorge’s life.

Keith Richards and Patti Hansen’s wedding caught the media’s attention in the US. Their small celebration in an unknown town in Baja ended up in People Magazine, which later ended up in Sammy Hagar’s hands. What’s Cabo? Where’s Cabo? He had to find out! It was only a matter of time before the lead vocalist of Van Halen arrived at the lobby of the Twin Dolphin hotel with his wife and baby son in tow.

As a receptionist in the most popular hotel among celebrities, Jorge was used to checking in famous people. Athletes, models, actors, and musicians paraded around the lobby. Stars have always had their eyes on Cabo, even before the roads were paved. But Sammy Hagar wasn’t a regular celebrity, and Jorge wasn’t a regular receptionist. These two were destined to meet. So, when Sammy needed a ride to the supermarket to buy diapers for his son Andrew, who was he to ask? The guy with the iconic black hair and rock star look, of course.

After a diaper run and a couple of drinks, the pair said goodbye because Jorge had to go get changed for his shift at the restaurant.

“Why do you have two jobs?” Sammy asked. Jorge’s answer sealed his fate, proving that it takes more than just serendipity to make magical things happen- it takes dreaming and a lot of hard work. “Because I’m saving up to open a bar,” Jorge replied.

And with that, like many other visitors, Sammy left Cabo with a sense of wanting more. Fast forward a couple of months later. The phone rang in the Viaña household. His wife at the time didn’t speak English, which is why she hung up on some gringo loco who was asking for her husband. You can imagine who that was! After a couple more tries, Sammy had to try a different method to reach Jorge. He hired a messenger to deliver a package to Cabo San Lucas.

After a few days, Jorge received a mysterious box. Inside was an answering machine with a note from Sammy that said. “Jorge, hook this up - Sammy.”

Once they finally got in touch, Sammy invited Jorge and his family to a Van Halen concert in San Diego, California. Passports were faxed, plane tickets were bought, and the same messenger that delivered Sammy’s package led the way for Jorge and his family to the Sports Arena. His life was about to change. The limo, the music, the screaming fans, and meeting Eddie and Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony were only some of the highlights of the night. When the show was over, Jorge found himself backstage with the band. Some banter and a few drinks later, Sammy Hagar announced he was opening a bar in Cabo San Lucas- and that he was doing it with Jorge! History was made.

Sammy loved Cabo and wanted a small bar with a stage to perform whenever he was in town, suspecting other musicians would want to play there, too. Jorge knew Cabo and was willing to work hard to make things happen. They spoke each other's language because rock stars understand each other. A brand that would not only shape gringo-choyero culture, but also change the history of Cabo was born.

What is gringo-choyero culture? Only the adventurous set their eyes on Cabo. It was true back then of Jorge, who is originally from Bolivia. It was true of Sammy, when he decided to launch a business in an unknown land. And it is true about foreigners who come to Cabo searching for new experiences and who care about assimilating the culture. This town brings out our true selves, for better or for worse, and it brought out the best in Jorge.

Life handed him lemons and he made this town’s most iconic margarita, also known as the Waborita.

Cabo Wabo’s opening night received worldwide press coverage. Van Halen performed, and it was broadcasted on MTV. Sammy wanted a monster of an opening, and a monster of an opening he had. From that star-studded event, to surprise concerts with world-renowned musicians, to serving thousands of tourists a year, Jorge has been the man behind the scenes, running Cabo’s most iconic restaurant-bar. As the years have gone by and Cabo has grown into the destination it is today, so have the lines to get a table in Cabo Wabo. Its walls have witnessed incredible moments, such as Alice Cooper’s live recording concert, which is one of Jorge’s favorite memories. It is the place where rock stars eat.

A lot has changed since the doors of Cabo Wabo first opened in 1990. Streets have been paved, music trends have come and gone, and you might find a gray hair or two on these rock stars’ heads. But the important things have stayed the same. When you put your whole heart into what you do, you’re halfway there. These values, and Sammy’s relentless display of love for our destination and for Cabo Wabo on so many stages around the world, are what have made it an institution.

Jorge Viaña at Cabo Wabo, 2023

Jorge still listens to the same playlist he did when he bumped into Keith Richards. His Chuck Taylor’s have “Cabo Wabo” embroidered on them, and he’s as cool as he’s ever been. If you pay attention, even the smallest of details say a lot about who a person is. Jorge is a family man who surrounds himself with his loved ones. His wife Patty was present when we had his picture taken for the cover of this magazine, and she took his sunglasses to wipe them clean. Even his sons Jorge, age 17, and Ozzy, age 15, help out when the restaurant gets really busy.

Some members of his staff have been with him since day one. He's a great boss. Cabo Wabo is the most popular it's ever been, a must on every visitor’s bucket list, and the menu is to die for. He knows his food. He’s lived through the most disastrous hurricanes in the history of Cabo and always lends a helping hand to the community, donating food and supplies. He's kind.

The walls of his office are filled with memories with interesting personalities, some of whom he’s seen perform on the stage he dreamed of when he was young. Jorge Viaña is a rock star.

“I may have been responsible for making Cabo Wabo famous all over the world. But Jorge Viaña is who makes Cabo Wabo great every day & night of the week. His dedication to the food, the drinks, service, and general hospitality, as well as keeping the management team and staff 100% committed is why we're still here & better than ever after over 30 years being in business. That is a rare thing and I have to thank my longtime friend and partner Jorge Viaña for that.”

ALMEJAS CHOCOLATAS

THE BURIED TREASURE OF LORETO

For generations, the fishermen of Loreto have buried their hands in the sand in search of treasure. Although Baja has its fair share of pirate stories, this particular treasure isn’t gold, jewels, or found in a chest. These gems are as big as your hand and brown like chocolate. Almejas chocolatas are well known because of their size. They are not your average clam, as they can get as large as six inches wide and can only be found in the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Finding them is only part of the magic. The ritual that follows is a tradition that honors fishermen and traditional Baja recipes to this day. We spoke to Isidoro Mendez, Food and Beverages Director at Villa del Palmar at Islands of Loreto, about the fascinating way these clams are prepared.

Loreto has stolen Isidoro’s heart. He moved here because of the job offer a couple of years ago but stayed because this corner of Baja has turned into his dream Paradise. This land has that effect on people. Among the surprises he found is the Almeja Tatemada ritual. As a foodie himself, this celebration piqued his interest because of its longevity and the mouthwatering recipe.

Fishermen need nothing more than their snorkels and their hands to retrieve the clams. On some occasions, the tide is so low that they can walk on the sand and find them easily by stepping hard and noticing if a spurt of water emerges from the ground. Years of tradition have trained their eyes to easily spot them. The abundance of this species allows over one hundred clams to be gathered for the ritual.

“The first step is to make a square, or sometimes a circle, on the sand and to place the almejas chocolatas one next to the other. Then, they are covered with a special kind of gravel” Isidoro

told Destino. “Then, we find chamizo or romerillo which is like the tumbleweed you see in Western films. The gravel is covered by this dried plant and then set on fire, roasting the clams, which is how the smoky flavor is achieved” he added.

After about forty minutes, the clams are once again dug up and cleaned. “If they were cooked correctly, they’ll open up by themselves,” said Isidoro. To accompany them, you’ll usually find flour tortillas, mustard and mayonaise dressing, and lime. “It is an amazing ritual to witness,” he added.

This recipe is part of the prehispanic historical legacy left by the first settlers that arrived in Loreto. Scientists have been able to discover a lot of information about their eating habits by finding large quantities of shells buried in the sand. Clams, and mollusks in general, are an important part of this region’s diet. Although the almeja tatemada ritual is usually saved for a special occasion or visit, it is common for Loretan families to enjoy this delicacy on any given Sunday.

As an avid promoter of Baja’s gastronomy, Isidoro’s dream is to shine a light on Loretan cuisine around the world. Due to the process by which the clams are retrieved and prepared, his goal is to have the almejas tatemadas awarded protected designation of origin, which is a label given to products that owe their quality or characteristics to the geographical environment. To achieve this, Loreto hosts the Almeja Chocolata Gastronomic Festival in June. For two days, chefs from Loreto and all over Baja show off their recipes with different types of clams, fish, and other local delicacies. However, due to its flavor and Indigenous tradition, the star of the show is the almeja tatemada, a true symbol of Baja California Sur.

Isidoro Mendez is passionate about celebrating food and offering tourists a unique dining experience at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. Your visit to this magical town is a unique opportunity to taste the best Mexican food and especially, this rare treasure that can only be found in Loreto.

Is Cabo a good market to own an investment property for Airbnb rental income? The answer, in my opinion, is a resounding yes! With high interest rates and elevated property values back in the United States, rental properties here in Cabo can make much more sense from a value perspective. The return on investment is often higher in Los Cabos as well. For 2022, hotels were able to maintain an average daily rate (ADR) of $460/night at 75% occupancy according to the Los Cabos Hotel Association. That is by far the most expensive hotel room in the country and double the daily rate of hotels in the Riviera Maya. But why is this so important? Because at the end of the day, your Airbnb listing is competing with the hotels. This means that having an affordable Airbnb listing in the range of $125-$300/night fills a much needed void for the budget-conscious traveler. Luxury rental properties also do very well here, especially for large families or corporate retreats that want to have an oceanfront villa to themselves.

Another interesting dynamic at play is the change in Airbnb trends. With relaxed work environments and the rise of remote work, people are renting Airbnbs for much longer than they did just a couple of years ago. Many people are booking these properties for a month at a time or even longer. In places like Manhattan, we are seeing many smaller companies rent an Airbnb apartment as a flex work space instead of tying themselves down to a long term office commitment. I think many of these trends are here to stay. Therefore, an investment property in Cabo makes a lot of sense given its proximity to many major US markets. The pandemic seems to have accelerated interest in owning property in Los Cabos as a second home or an investment. Short term rentals in the downtown area can also offer renters a more authentic experience as opposed to staying at an all-inclusive resort.

This poses another question: Is it better to rent out your property short term on a platform like Airbnb or rent it out long term? Since most people decide to go the short-term rental route, there is a big demand for long-term rentals. Choosing to go the short-term rental route will generally net you more rental income at the end of the day. However, it also increases the wear and tear on the property. One of the main reasons many owners choose the short-term rental option is because they can come down and use the property themselves between renters. If you are renting the property out on a long-term basis, you can count on the fact that the condo or house is always occupied per the lease agreement, so you’ll have that constant flow of income. You should always consult an attorney when drafting a lease agreement. Airbnb has also made it very easy to pay your taxes to the Mexican IRS, also known as Hacienda. The Mexican government recently required Airbnb to withhold taxes if they want to continue operating in Mexico. This was because so many people were not compliant nor were they paying their fair share of taxes. About three years ago, they made it very simplethe Mexican government will get their portion of taxes on your rental income before you, as the property owner, are paid. This was convenient because it simplified the process. You needn’t worry about being compliant with taxes, as they are automatically deducted from your portion of the income.

Are you looking to buy an investment property here in Los Cabos? It makes a lot of sense with prices reaching unaffordable levels and such low returns back home in the United States. It kind of defeats the purpose of an investment to overpay for property, doesn’t it? Baja offers so many lifestyle options to invest in from Todos Santos to Cabo to the East Cape – the options are unlimited.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOUTHERN BAJA 27 REAL ESTATE REAL ESTATE

When buying or selling property, you enter a world that requires many different skillsets. That's why finding the right people for each task should be on the top of your priority list. One thing that becomes evident is the importance of knowing the condition of the main systems. Plumbing, air conditioning, and electricity are essential to our lives. Here are some of the most frequent questions we get asked when people come to us for home inspection inquiries.

How much does an inspection cost?

When doing a proper inspection, no stone can be left unturned. Every possible issue has to be addressed. Each house is different, which is why square footage is the biggest factor when evaluating the cost of an inspection.

How long does an inspection take to complete?

This will also depend greatly on the size of the property, but it’s not the only thing to have in mind. While a regular 3,000 square feet house would take about an hour to inspect, it can easily take longer if the space has a pool/spa, firepit, solar system, BBQ, etc.

When will the report be completed?

We make it our priority to offer you the quality and professional service you want when buying or selling property. When you enlist our services, you can rest assured that the complete, detailed report will be sent to your email within 24 hours of our visit!

How far will you travel for inspection?

We will travel wherever you need us to, whether your property is in Los Cabos, Todos Santos, East Cape, La Paz, or anywhere in between.

How long have you been doing home inspections?

We have been doing home inspections for three years. In that time, we have performed over 400 inspections in Cabo San Lucas, building a reputation and collecting testimonies as more and more clients choose us and trust us with the inspection of their properties.

What is the difference between inspecting a home in Mexico vs the US?

For better or worse Mexico has its own way of doing things. Even though regulations for new construction are in place, they might not always be enforced. That has led to people cutting corners and properties not having the standards you want and expect for your new house. Doing inspections in Mexico means being aware of these practices and knowing where to look so our clients can be fully informed on any possible issues.

"Bill Clifton and his daughter Kiley are very meticulous with their work and take it very serious.  They are easy to work with and diligent within their field.  Bill's knowledge is impeccable and thorough in his findings.  I highly recommend Bill and Kiley for home inspections."
